<br /> This Teachers’ Day, <keyword id="6355629" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Google">Google</keyword> decided to thank some of these teachers from across India who are championing technology in the classroom and helping their students thrive in this digital world. Let’s meet these great teachers who are striving hard to impart the world-class education.<br />
<br />
<strong>Dipak Tatpuje</strong><br />
<br />
With more than 30 years of teaching experience, Dipak Tatpuje, a senior lecturer at Satara Polytechnic, has pioneered technology in rural classrooms and trained over 150 rural teachers on how to use free online tools.<br />
<br />
Believing that technology can be a great equalizer, Tatpuje says that empowering rural students through technology “allows them not to spread their wings and walk further in life.”<br />
<br />
<strong>Balaji Jadhav </strong><br />
<br />
Another rural teacher who supports technology is Balaji Jadhav. He developed a series of interactive, HTML-based online tests that are now used by over 500 teachers on a day-to-day basis. Balaji is no tech expert, but it was YouTube that helped him learn HTML.<br />
<br /> After gaining expertise in HTML, Balaji launched a blog for fellow <keyword id="710486" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="educators">educators</keyword> in Maharashtra. Currently, he is playing role of an advisor for five state government departments and trains teachers in 36 school districts about how to use blogs for teaching.<br />
<br />
<strong>Sarvesh Srinivasan</strong><br />
<br />
The next in the line is Sarvesh Srinivasan, director of Bengaluru’s Gifted Education and Research (GEAR) Foundation. He champions technology adoption for personalized learning. In order to help teachers recognise students’ strengths and tailor their teaching methods, Srinivasan ran a 10-month pilot program with Google Apps for Education for middle schools students.<br />
<br />
<strong>Sangeeta Gulati</strong><br />
<br /> The last one to champion the use of technology in classrooms is Sangeeta Gulati, the head of the mathematics department at New Delhi-based <keyword id="195874" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Sanskriti-School">Sanskriti School</keyword>. Her dedication towards education for more than a decade helped her receive the Fulbright Distinguished Award in Teaching in 2011. She constantly encourages her students to be creative with technology.<br />
<br />
Sangeeta says that she finds herself “a stronger, more effective teacher who is connected with her students” using Google Apps for Education and Chromebooks.<br />

Happy Teachers Day 2023: Heartwarming wishes and messages for your beloved teachers

<strong>Google Search</strong><br />
Google search allowed Indians to travel back into time so that they could take a virtual feel of India’s freedom struggle, and that too in their local languages. This could also be done by entering voice commands, or typing your questions regarding Indian independence in 11 Indian languages, including Hindi, Bangla, Punjabi, Assamese, Oriya, Gujarati, Marathi, Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam and Kannada using Indic keyboard.<br />

<strong>Google Translate</strong><br />
People who were out wandering must have come across signs in some local languages, which they would have wanted to be translated. Rather than looking for someone to translate it for them, they used Google Translate and scanned those printed texts so that the app could translate it for them in their own language.<br />

<strong>Google Maps</strong><br />
This year, Independence Day came on a Monday, giving Indians a much-awaited long weekend, which they spent on weekend getaways. To help them breeze through unknown roads, Google Maps ensured a wonderful travel experience, along with the features of traffic alert and voice commands. People also used these maps offline, by downloading maps prior to the trip and then using them even without an internet connection.<br />

<p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Shayanne Gal/Business Insider</span></p></div><p></p></div></div></p><ul class="summary-list"><li><a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/google-dominating-apple-in-the-classroom-2017-6">Google for Education</a> tools have taken off "like grass on fire," industry analysts say.</li><li>The software is completely free and Chromebooks, which are laptops manufactured by other companies running the Google Chrome operating system, are deeply discounted for classrooms.</li><li>These tactics have worked: Google-powered devices made up almost 60% of computing devices purchased for US classrooms in 2017, up from 5% in 2012.</li><li>Eighty million teachers and students use the platform worldwide, and there are 30 million <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/category/chromebooks">Chromebooks</a> in classrooms.</li><li>Teachers have expressed suspicions about why the mega-corporation is giving away the valuable software.</li><li>"There is a bit of a mistrust to Google in some way from the teacher standpoint because it is such a large corporation offering everything for free," Danny Wagner at <a href="https://www.commonsensemedia.org">Common Sense Media</a> said. </li></ul><p>Michelle Alphe's French classes in Franklin High School, about 40 miles southwest of New York City, begin the same way most days: with a Chromebook.</p><p>"Before class, I'll post their assignments [on Google Classroom] and the students get right on the computers, log into Classroom, and can start working right away," Alphe told Business Insider.</p><p>Advanced classes might read an article in French, then record a video in which they discuss what's different between the US and the country they read about. They then post the video on Google Classroom, and their peers watch and comment on the video.</p><p>"At first I was resistant to it - I'm a technophobe," Alphe told Business Insider. "Now, I really like it. It's made my life a lot easier. I think it has made students' work easier too."</p><p>This scene is repeated in classrooms around the US, where <keyword id="6355445" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="education">education</keyword> is increasingly starting to revolve around Google for Education apps and Google's Chromebook laptops. </p><p>Google says there are 80 million educators and students globally using <a href="https://edu.google.com/gsuite-editions/?modal_active=none">G Suite for Education</a>, which allows users to access Gmail, Google Cloud, Google Docs, and other productivity tools. There are 40 million global users of Google Classroom specifically.</p><p>Worldwide, there are 30 million Chromebooks in classrooms, the majority of which are in the US. Fifty-eight percent of the classroom laptops ordered in the US <a href="https://futuresource-consulting.com/Press-K-12-Education-Market-Growth-Forecast-in-2018-0318.html">last year</a> were Chromebooks. These laptops, which cost from $179 to $999 <a href="https://www.google.com/chromebook/find-yours/?utm_source=en-ha-na-sem&amp;utm_medium=text&amp;utm_content=bkws&amp;utm_campaign=chromebook2018Q3&amp;gclid=EAIaIQobChMIlcaJ5Luz3gIVw8DICh2scQ86EAAYASAAEgJUrPD_BwE&amp;gclsrc=aw.ds#">for typical customers</a>, are manufactured by brands like Lenovo, Acer, and HP. </p><p>Google is not alone in trying to making inroads on the hardware and software sides of the classroom. There are software tools like Canvas, where students can access documents and information for their classes, or Safari Montage, a repository for textbooks and other class materials.</p><p>The average cost for learning management software is $5 to $8 per student annually, according to Ben Davis, a senior educator analyst at the market-research firm Futuresource Consulting. For a district such as <a href="http://www.bcps.org/system/">Baltimore</a>, which has over 113,000 students, that could cost nearly $1 million a year. </p><p>But Google Classroom and G Suite for Education are totally free. Google has tens of millions of users for its education software, but it chooses not to make a cent off of them.</p><p>As for the laptops, they're deeply discounted. Institutional pricing for an iPad, once the standby education hardware nationwide, <a href="https://appleinsider.com/articles/18/03/27/apple-offers-new-ipad-to-schools-and-education-customers-at-discounted-299">is $299</a> while Microsoft devices <a href="https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/education/devices/default.aspx">start at $189</a>. "But for us, having educators and students experience our products is important."</p><p>He added: "Our motivation is to make sure people have an option to work better."</p><p>But Google for Education has raised suspicions for ed-tech analysts and educators.</p><p>"They are still selling their Google products to kids, who are being taught to trust them," Keith Chiappone, an eighth-grade English teacher at Conackamack Middle School in Piscataway Township, New Jersey. "Then, when they are of age where they can legally make decisions, that's going to be their default."</p><h2><strong>The first push for educational tech came from state legislatures, not Silicon Valley</strong></h2><p>Classrooms like Alphe's, where students have their own laptops, may seem over the top to those who managed to learn to read and write without computers or with occasional visits to the school computer lab.</p><p>But districts that furnish each student with a laptop aren't doing so by their own choice alone. Since the late 2000s, legislatures in states such as Florida, Virginia, and California <a href="https://files.eric.ed.gov/fulltext/ED522907.pdf">began passing laws</a> to call for digital classrooms and textbooks.</p><p>"There's an increasing push to have our students become digitally literate and move into the workforce seamlessly through the use of digital tools," said Elita Driskill, the director of technology for <a href="https://www.aisd.net">Arlington Independent School District</a> in Arlington, Texas, which serves 61,000 students. "We want to make sure we're not just teaching to the middle, but providing enrichment for the higher levels and remediation for the lower levels."</p><h2>Tech companies have taken advantage of the shift to digital classrooms</h2><p>That shift to digital has fueled fast growth in the US ed-tech market, which has been growing by 8.8% <a href="https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&amp;rct=j&amp;q=&amp;esrc=s&amp;source=web&amp;cd=1&amp;cad=rja&amp;uact=8&amp;ved=2ahUKEwjWrIW9kKDeAhXwRd8KHRanAegQFjAAegQIABAC&amp;url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.austrade.gov.au%2FArticleDocuments%2F5085%2FEdtech-US-market-snapshot.pdf.aspx&amp;usg=AOvVaw1iGI0Qs5JrVCWYVZ08krFN">since 2014</a>. He was a teacher as Google Classroom first made its big push into the ed-tech market in the early 2010s, when state legislatures were pushing for digital classrooms.</p><p>"Going paperless was a big deal, and Google Classroom was the first tool that solved that problem," Wagner, who is now an editor of ed-tech reviews at Common Sense Media, told Business Insider.</p><p>"Google Classroom took off like grass on fire," Gartner Research vice president Kelly Calhoun Williams, who focuses on K-12 education and was in public education for 25 years, added. "Just crazy growth."</p><p>Chromebooks and other Google devices made up 58% of all devices purchased for US classrooms in 2017, according to <a href="https://futuresource-consulting.com/Press-K-12-Education-Market-Growth-Forecast-in-2018-0318.html">Futuresource data</a>, up from 5% in 2012. Not every Chromebook-enabled school uses Google Classroom, and many classrooms without Chromebooks use Google Classroom or G Suite for Education. </p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Futuresource Consulting, Andy Kiersz/Business Insider</span></p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>In contrast, Apple's market share in mobile devices for education sank by 33 percentage points from 2012 to 2017, while Microsoft's decreased by 21 percentage points, according to Futuresource.</p><h2>Teacher-tested, administrator-approved</h2><p>Franklin High School has had G Suite for Education for only about four years, but Maggie Muir, who teaches Spanish at Franklin, has been using Google products in her classroom for a decade. </p><p>Muir is enthusiastic about Google Classroom's features. She can quickly see how her students are performing on certain tasks. Absent students can keep up with assignments and activities by simply checking the Google Classroom homepage. It's easier for clubs to organize and for teachers to share learning resources with each other, she said.</p><p>As for the Chromebook, Muir said she's happy her students, many of whom are low income, have access to the technology. All Franklin students have Chromebooks thanks to a one-to-one initiative, in which each student has his or her own Chromebook starting in middle school. Davis of Futuresource said between 20% and 30% of US classrooms have similar one-to-one programs. </p><p>Muir has used Angel, Blackboard, Canvas, and other education apps, but says Google is just better.</p><p>"I can edit a Google Doc on my phone," Muir went on. "I can connect with Google Classroom on my phone no matter where I am. There are a lot of options and accessibility. It makes it so easy. Everything is there."</p><p>According to Rochelle, the G Suite for Education product manager, Google created Google Classroom as a response to educators using Google Docs as a collaboration tool among other teachers and for their students.</p><p>Google Classroom doesn't address every classroom need. Muir still uses Genesis to record grades, attendance, and higher-level demographic and conduct information. Its simplicity is part of why it's won over so many teachers, Williams of Gartner Research said.</p><p>"It was hugely popular because it was just so darn simple," Williams said. That familiarity with Google products is good for tech-averse educators, she said.</p><p>"I know a lot of teachers who are overwhelmed by the technology and feel a little lost," Guzio told Business Insider.</p><p>But one benefit overshadowed all the rest, Wagner of Education Reviews said. "It was free. You cannot [overstate] how important that was for Google Classroom's success."</p><p>Digitizing classrooms is expensive. Driskell said that Arlington purchased Chromebook carts, allowing one laptop for every student, because it was "an affordable option."</p><p>Alton said the Lee County School District is using more free content, such as Khan Academy, and that its spending on technology has increased over the years. It has 70,000 Chromebooks in the district.</p><h2>Google's motives are 'clear,' but teachers use it anyway</h2><p>Joanna Petrone, a middle-school English teacher in the Bay Area, uses Google Classroom every day, but finds the tool "a little creepy."</p><p>She said she feels that with Google's <a href="https://teachercenter.withgoogle.com/certification">teacher-certification programs</a> and <a href="https://teachercenter.withgoogle.com/resources/general/details?key=ahpzfmd3ZWItZWR1LXRyYWluaW5nLWNlbnRlcnIcCxIPR2VuZXJhbFJlc291cmNlGICAgPiI8Z4KDA">suggested curriculum plans</a>, the company is overstepping certain legal boundaries. While including corporate messaging in schools is <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2010/12/16/education/16naming.html">typically met with resistance</a>, Google for Education liberally includes its branding in <a href="https://beinternetawesome.withgoogle.com/en">digital citizenship courses</a> that several teachers told Business Insider they had their students take.</p><p>So through Classroom, Google can acclimatize millions of children to its products.</p><p>"It's pretty clear what motive Google has," Williams at Gartner Research said. "This is not a product they're selling; this is not a commercial product. Chromebooks are the technology furnished in Petrone's district, while Chiappone of Piscataway said he was required to use Google Classroom in his previous district.</p><p>"It's not our choice what software we use," Chiappone said. "Every school district will purchase a license for specific software. We can't really go and say, 'I'm going to go use this other software,' because just about everything has a subscription fee."</p><p>Above all, teachers said they were already strapped for time and energy. There simply aren't enough hours in the day to ponder how their district-provided software might be affecting them and their students.</p><p>"There is a bit of a mistrust to Google in some way from the teacher standpoint because it is such a large corporation offering everything for free," Wagner said. According to a report, Bal Bharati Public School in Noida has issued a circular stating that, “The school will remain closed (preparatory off) on September 5 for all classes. However, for classes III to XII, the key points of the Prime Minister’s address are to be noted and learnt for the school to evaluate the same (during the upcoming examination from Monday).” It further added that one question of two marks each will be asked in each of the five main papers.<br />

In South, especially TamilNadu, where Hindi is not understood so easily, teachers have been asked to interpret Prime Minister Modi’s speech in the native language.<br />

Are these events signalling the rise of a tyranny? Or would the PM prove the critics wrong by delivering an inspirational speech and choosing not to politicise this pious occasion. <p>Google has a new app called Classroom, and it allows students to turn in homework assignments using their phones.</p>
<p>Classroom could actually be helpful for teachers because it connects to the teacher-centric Classroom for Desktop app, which allows teachers to archive and see a list of submitted assignments.</p>
<p>The beauty of Classroom is that it allows students to turn in their homework in a variety of ways. <span style="line-height: 1.5em;">Running late to class? Just snap a picture of your assignment and your teacher will get a copy instantly, regardless if you're in the classroom or not.</span></p>

<p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">Classroom will also help teachers stay organized, with the app creating new folders for each assignment along with folders for each student. If a student hasn't turned in an assignment yet, Classroom makes it easy for a teacher to see that. They can even distribute grades in real-time.</span></p>

A number of teachers said that getting drawings, paintings, and handcrafted cards put a smile on their faces. </p><p>"I've been teaching for 10 plus years now, and I still hang up sweet pictures and cards students made for me," Nina Moser, an enrichment teacher in Urbandale, Iowa, said. </p><h2>Caffeine</h2><p><div type="image" title="coffee" height="3750" width="5000" msid="75632742" hostid="261"></div></p><p>The average school day is about seven hours long. But the average teacher clocks in 12 to 16 hours daily, according to<a href="https://edtechmagazine.com/k12/article/2013/08/how-many-hours-do-educators-actually-work"> EdTech Magazine. </a>Many teachers said that they rely on caffeine for a boost of energy, especially during this stressful period, and that a nice bag of coffee beans, or even a case of their favorite soda, goes a long way. </p><h2>Toilet paper, hand sanitizer, tissues, and disinfectant wipes</h2><p>Now that there's a <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/where-to-buy-toilet-paper-essentials-sold-out-amazon-walmart-2020-4">shortage of basic household items</a>, many teachers said they'd actually love to get some toilet paper and disinfectant wipes, both for themselves and for their classrooms once school resumes.</p><h2>A virtual check-in </h2><p><div type="image" title="elementary school zoom" height="1411" width="1881" msid="75632762" hostid="261"></div></p><p>Many teachers said that what they miss most is their face-to-face interactions with their students. Scheduling a Zoom meeting or a Google Hangout session to check in and say "thank you" will go a long way. </p><h2>A hot meal</h2><p>Many teachers have said that educating their students during the pandemic is particularly stressful since they're adapting to an entirely new platform, while also managing their personal lives. That's why so many say getting a hot meal from a restaurant, especially now, is a true luxury.</p><p>"One of the best gifts I have gotten was lunch brought in by a parent," Amy Valentine Barlow, a middle school science teacher in Miami, Florida, said. "Simple, but thoughtful."</p><h2>A video of your child graduating or performing from home</h2><p>Teachers are just as disappointed as students that major events have been canceled this year. Virtually including teachers in at-home celebrations and performances can help them feel more connected to their students.</p><h2>Gift Cards </h2><p><div type="image" title="gift cards" height="2533" width="3377" msid="75632765" hostid="261"></div></p><p>A 2018 study found that public school teachers <a href="https://nypost.com/2018/05/15/study-reveals-how-much-teachers-spend-each-year-on-school-supplies/">spend an average of $480 of their own money</a> a year on supplies for the classroom. Many teachers said that they'd appreciate gift cards from Amazon, Target, and Teachers Pay Teachers,  to help with stocking up their classrooms so they'll be prepared when school resumes. </p><h2><strong style="background-color: #ffffff;">Dry erase markers, paper clips, and classroom supplies </strong></h2><p>If you prefer to give a tangible gift, consider buying classroom supplies, such as paper clips, pencils, dry erase markers, and pens. Find out if the teacher has an online wish list or ask if they have any specific needs.</p><h2>Plants </h2><p><div type="image" title="Potted Plant" height="3333" width="4444" msid="75632772" hostid="261"></div></p><p>A little bit of greenery can brighten a teacher's day. </p><p>"I love getting plants because I can keep them in my room during the year," Amy Rorvick Oseguera, a St. Paul, Minnesota teacher, said. "I share stories of the kids who gifted them to me and during the summer they stay at my house, reminding me of all the joy my job brings to me."</p><h2>A personalized thank you sign</h2><p>Some teachers said they'd like a colorful gesture of gratitude. "A sign in my front yard from students saying 'a cool teacher lives here' and notes all over would be so cool," Kristen Case, a West Park, Ohio teacher, said. </p><p>Parents can send a photo of their child holding a sign expressing their appreciation, too.</p><h2>Small treasures</h2><p><div type="image" title="Children playing outside" height="3559" width="4745" msid="75632777" hostid="261"></div></p><p>"The best [gifts] are just the random things [students] find that they give you," Lisa Hoffpauir Waldrop, a Houston, Texas teacher, said. One of her favorite gifts was a small plastic apple from a student last year. </p><h2><strong>Something special that reminds a teacher of a student</strong></h2><p>When Megan Ostrander Sneary assigned her class to write about their heritage, a Native American student submitted her report and gave the Arizona teacher a special picture. The student drew the totems of her clan. "She was honored to share the heritage of her clan and tribe with me," said Ostrander Sneary.</p><h2>An item from the school store</h2><p>Many teachers would still like to represent their school while at home. Stephanie Brennan said that she appreciated when the principal of her school let teachers choose an item from the school store as a gift, including face masks branded with the school logo.</p><h2>Alcohol (but inquire first)</h2><p><div type="image" title="Wine aisle" height="2700" width="3600" msid="75632783" hostid="261"></div></p><p>Before giving alcohol to teachers, make sure that that's something they enjoy. If they're a wine drinker or other type of alcohol connoisseur, consider dropping off a nice bottle with a thoughtful thank you note.</p><h2>Show up</h2><p>More than anything, teachers want to communicate with their students, especially while they're learning remotely, Dorothy Chartres Noble, a teacher in Catonsville, Maryland said.</p><p>"Attendance," Noble said of what she wants most. "Just hearing how students are doing and interacting with them is enough this year."</p><h2>A spa treatment </h2><p>Everyone is looking forward to the moment when they can get pampered, once businesses start reopening. That's why a gift certificate to a spa is a great gift right now. </p><p>"I love when I get gift cards because I am very frugal with my small teacher salary," Jessica Davidson said. "With a gift card, I feel like I can treat myself without worrying that I can't afford it."</p><h2>Experiential gifts </h2><p><div type="image" title="Zoom class" height="2839" width="3785" msid="75632790" hostid="261"></div></p><p>Enabling a teacher to take a real break, by treating them to a remote yoga or dance class, is something many teachers say they would enjoy.</p><h2>Donations toward a dream project</h2><p>Teachers often come up with major projects for schools that require major funding. </p><p>That was the case for Rosanna Christine, a Rhode Island music teacher, who was trying to collect enough money to buy a new piano for her chorus classroom. A few parents made donations and that meant a lot to her. </p><p>"That was the best gift I could ask for," Christine said. </p><h2>Year-round advocacy</h2><p>Teachers say they appreciate the <a href="https://www.insider.com/im-grateful-for-all-teacher-appreciation-but-want-see-more-2020-5">recognition they're now getting,</a> and are grateful for gifts. But several said that what they'd really like to see is advocacy and support for their profession all year long, not just during a crisis. </p><p>"The best thing they can do is vote," Candace McCann-Belbey, a teacher in Las Vegas, Nevada, said.
