The deal struck by Congress Wednesday only reopens the government until January 15 and raises the debt ceiling until February 7, so it hasn't quite been resolved yet. As a result, it seems as if chances are increasing that the Federal Reserve will continue to delay tapering back its quantitative easing program.
In a note to clients today, Currie says he's not ready to short <keyword id="18712" type="ENTERTAINMENT" weightage="60" keywordseo="Gold">gold</keyword> just yet:

Gold is still waiting for data confirmation of a US rebound that can support tapering even as the lack of a lasting US resolution could delay tapering
Gold is back to where it was when the US debt ceiling debates started, as the risks of deferred tapering erased any optimism that was generated late last week. We continue to argue that the key to the gold outlook is data that shows a strong US recovery and gives the market confidence that tapering will begin. We still believe that this is the key trigger for gold prices even as the risks of deferred tapering have increased. Accordingly, we still expect gold to trade close to our near-term target of $1300/toz until the end of this year when our economists expect economic data to begin to show some confirmation of the economic improvement embedded in the 2014 US outlook. 
This more optimistic 2014 US economic outlook is what drives our economists' expectations for tapering next year (whether it starts in December, March or June), which combined with a stronger dollar and weaker emerging market currencies, suggests that the investment and monetary demand for gold will create significant downside risks for gold prices in 2014. Accordingly, we are maintaining our end of 2014 gold price target of $1050/toz.
Today, gold is trading around $1315 an ounce.

GOLDMAN: Now Is Not The Time To Short Gold

As in 2022, gold is expected to log double digit gains this year as per indications, said experts. "The yellow metal has already posted over three per cent gains in the month of January, 2023. The current setup seems to indicate a re-run of 2022. Gold seems to be poised to open a new chapter in term of its price trajectory," Emkay Global Financial Services said in a report. According to Quantum Mutual Fund report, gold started the new year on a cheery note, up about six per cent in January in dollar terms and about four per cent in rupee terms. Underpinning the rally was annual <keyword id="22195" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="inflation" source="Orion">inflation</keyword> in the US slowing for a sixth straight month to 6.5 per cent in December, raising hopes of smaller rate hikes from the Federal Reserve in Q1'23 and rate cuts later in the year, Quantum Mutual Fund said. In the last one year, gold purchases in the international markets was about 4,000 tonne of which 1,400 tonne took place in the last quarter, said Emkay Global. Apart from institutional buying, jewellery demand in China revived with the Covid restrictions being relaxed there. China is one of the biggest consumers of gold, accounting for over 30 per cent of global jewellery demand, Emkay Global said. "The yellow metal benefitted from a softer USD environment and lower US Treasury yields. Physical demand from China during the Lunar New Year celebrations, central bank gold buying and increase in net long positioning in gold by global money managers also supported prices,a Quantum Mutual Fund said. The general expectation that there will be a slowdown in economic activity in the major economies also is helping gold though the high inflation never propelled gold to higher levels, said Emkay Global. In India, with a duty cut now out of the picture for the foreseeable future, down moves in gold on account of that are no longer expected. But prices could see some headwinds from developments on the <keyword id="442659" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="US-monetary-policy" source="Orion">US monetary policy</keyword> front. Investors can stagger their purchases over the next few months to build their gold allocation, Quantum Mutual Fund said. Gold expected to log double digit gains this year say experts

Two of the largest publicly traded gold miners, <a href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/stocks/gold-stock">Barrick Gold</a> and <a href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/stocks/nem-stock">Newmont Mining</a>, are down roughly 15% and 2%, respectively.That's compared to the S&amp;P 500's more than 11% jump since the beginning of the year.Bank of America analysts said in a <a href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/news/stocks/gold-price-struggling-for-3-key-reasons-bofa-2021-2-1030092265">note to clients in February</a> that there have been signs of "fading" demand in the gold market for some time due to a "lack of interest from investors" in buying physical gold.The bank's analysts also noted Jewelry sales have been "disappointing" due to softness in demand from key regions like India thus far in 2021.BofA isn't the only bank to back away from gold either.UBS Wealth Management <a href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/news/stocks/metal-commodity-price-outlook-silver-platinum-outperform-gold-ubs-precious-2021-1-1029961646">told its clients</a> that gold will struggle to attract sufficient ETF inflows to sustain prices north of $1,900 in January.The wealth management team added that they believed gold would likely fall to around $1800 per ounce by the end of 2021.Since then, <a href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/commodities/gold-price">gold prices</a> have fallen even more dramatically than UBS predicted. They've partnered with precious metals dealer APMEX to build an online <a href="http://ebayinkblog.com/2013/01/08/ebay-brings-gold-buying-into-the-mainstream/" target="_blank">gold emporium</a> consumers can browse from home.
From a mega e-tailer's perspective, it makes sense. People are asking for something, so why not give them what they want? 
"In today’s uncertain <keyword id="34412" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="40" keywordseo="economy">economy</keyword>, people are looking to <keyword id="18712" type="ENTERTAINMENT" weightage="60" keywordseo="Gold">gold</keyword> and silver as more reliable ways to <keyword id="47916" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="40" keywordseo="invest">invest</keyword>, but some lack trust in those who sell gold and silver," the company says in a statement. "Many do not even know where to buy. The <a href="http://ebayinkblog.com/2013/01/08/ebay-brings-gold-buying-into-the-mainstream/" target="_blank">APMEX Bullion Center</a> on eBay offers everyone a convenient way to buy gold and silver from a source they already know and trust, and people are taking notice." 
From an <keyword id="35175" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="investing">investing</keyword> standpoint, however, this kind of mainstream treatment should be a pretty big red flag.
"The allure of gold ... reminds me of market darlings of yesteryear," says <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/gold-is-not-as-great-an-investment-as-you-think-2011-9" target="_blank">certified financial planner Adam Bold</a>. "Remember when everyone piled into dot-com <keyword id="6354298" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="40" keywordseo="stocks">stocks</keyword> and drove them into bubble territory in the late 1990s? Most of those speculative Internet stocks crashed a few years later. Soon after that, people were jumping into <keyword id="6354553" type="COMPANY" weightage="40" keywordseo="real-estate">real estate</keyword> and home prices went through the roof. We all know how that turned out."
And while eBay markets its new store as a doorway into the "New American <keyword id="154512" type="ENTERTAINMENT" weightage="60" keywordseo="Gold-Rush">Gold Rush</keyword>," a recent report shows that it might be a decade too late. 
A commodity analyst at <keyword id="6361649" type="CITY" weightage="40" keywordseo="Goldman-Sachs">Goldman Sachs</keyword> all but called the <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/goldman-calls-the-end-of-the-gold-bull-market-2012-12" target="_blank">end of the bull market for gold</a> in December, chocking up its soaring value to rising <keyword id="6371181" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="40" keywordseo="interest-rates">interest rates</keyword> and a rocky economy that is now getting back on its feet. 
"The gold outlook is caught between the opposing forces of more Fed easing and a gradual increase in US real rates on better US economic growth," the firms says. "Our expanded modeling suggests that the improving US growth outlook will outweigh further Fed balance sheet expansion and that the cycle in gold prices will likely turn in 2013." 
The bottom line: While gold can be a smart way for investors to diversify their assets, we'd be a little cautious before buying into a sales pitch that leads with the "New American Gold <keyword id="37572" type="ENTERTAINMENT" weightage="40" keywordseo="rush">Rush</keyword>."

This drives down interest rates and yields and increases gold prices. Unlike cash, gold prices do not offer any return. So when interest rates are low, it means investors have to sacrifice less to hold the precious metal. "I had not bought gold in over a decade until the end of last year. UBS said it [is beneficial] to have a small allocation to gold. I put in a 5% allocation at the end of last year," Day said. His views are in line with Standard Chartered's strategist Manpreet Gill who said last month <a href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/news/stocks/gold-price-rally-not-quite-finished-yet-standard-chartered-2020-8-1029511570#">"We think gold's run ... hasn't quite finished yet."</a>"It comes back to interest rates. One of the best explanations of why gold has surged the way it has through this year have been bond yields," Gill added. But not everyone is convinced that gold has much upside. "They're better than gold."

Credit Suisse is newly out with a huge report on its outlook for 2015, and among its 10 best trade ideas for next year: short gold.
The firm's technical analysis team puts a price target of $950 on the precious metal for the end of next year, and Credit Suisse's David Sneddon says that from a technical analysis standpoint, and his team that gold's recent break below $1,180 confirmed a bearish "triangle" continuation pattern.

The firm's quick rationale: "Gold remains very expensive relative to historical norms, with carrying costs becoming more penal as US interest rates begin to rise."
And continued strength in the US dollar should also keep gold under pressure, the firm writes. 
Credit Suisse, elsewhere in its research report, also argues that equities have become a hedge against inflation, a role that was typically assigned to commodities and particularly gold. 
Amid the recent decline in gold, Credit Suisse isn't the first research firm to say gold could be in trouble. Back in early October, analysts at Ned Davis Research said that, amid a declining "supercycle" for gold, the precious metal <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/gold-is-going-to-660-an-ounce-strategist-says-2014-10">could be headed</a> to $660. 
A look at the long-term chart for gold and you can see that it's been an ugly couple of years. And while gold rebounded a bit late last week, the longer-term outlook for gold is less than, well, you know.

CREDIT SUISSE: 'We Are Bearish Gold'

Gold is ripping higher on Wednesday.The precious metal gained about 1.14%, or $11 an ounce to as high as $1,120.80. After crossing the key $1,110 level earlier this week, gold has climbed to a three-week high.Gold was part of the rout in commodities that accelerated in June and July. The metal <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/gold-just-got-destroyed-2015-7">flash-crashed</a> July 19, and sank further after China disclosed lower-than-expected central bank stockpiles. Several analysts put out very bearish outlooks for gold, with Morgan Stanley saying last month that China's announcement was "the latest in <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/morgan-stanley-says-gold-is-over-2015-7">a string of bearish events</a>."And in a note Monday, the commodity team lowered its price outlook for gold by 8% for the second half of the year, and 1% by 2016. Gold is ripping higher

In a note to clients today, BAML analysts led by Michael Jalonen write:
Gold markets - Poised for a November rally?
Last week, the gold price rose 3.5% ending Friday at $1,316/oz. This belied considerable intra-week volatility as bullion fell to an intra week low of $1,255/oz before rallying sharply (some $60/oz) due to the end of US Government shutdown and an expansion of the debt ceiling. Interestingly the gold holding of SPDR Gold Shares (the world's largest gold ETF) declined by 1% (8.8 tonnes) to 882.2 tonnes, the lowest level since February 9th 2009. Year-to-date 2013, the gold holding of SPDR has declined by 438 tonnes (-34.6%), a major reason why bullion has declined by 21% ytd 2013. Looking ahead, history would indicate that November is usually a strong month (with an average monthly gain of 3.8% in November) for gold prices thanks to the wedding and festival season in India. Thus we believe that bullion could mount a modest rally to the $1,350-$1,400/oz range over the next month or so.
Morgan Stanley analyst Paretosh Misra agrees.
"Indian festival season could provide a lift to gold," writes Misra in a note. "Traditionally, the Diwali festival (specifically, Dhanteras, the two days before Diwali) is the biggest gold buying period of the year in India. In the last 10 years, gold has risen an average 2.5% in the one month around Diwali. While government's new import restrictions and INR depreciation could adversely affect gold imports, buying should be supported by ~20% YoY decline in gold in Rupee terms."
Société Générale analysts Jesper Dannesboe and Robin Bhar, however, believe any such rally would be very limited.

Short-term speculators appear to have accumulated substantial short positions over recent weeks but they were squeezed by a seasonal pick-up in Asian physical demand. Physical premiums in Hong Kong and India have risen recently and the gold forward curve this week moved into slight backwardation at the very front end of the curve. This tightness in the physical gold market is likely to be short-lived as the pick-up in Asian physical buying is partly seasonal and partly opportunistic (on big price drops) while ETF selling continues on a trend basis and we expect no significantly mine supply cuts until the gold price gets down to below $1,000/oz. 
It is difficult to say exactly how much further the gold price can rally on the ongoing short- covering but we would be surprised to see the gold price much above the $1,350 level. The medium-term drivers of the gold price are, in our view, still firmly bearish. The US economy is in recovery mode, US real interest rates have risen and are likely to trend higher as the recovery gains strength, inflation is very subdued, Fed tapering, while perhaps somewhat delayed, should be completed next year.

Goldman Sachs head of commodities research Jeffrey Currie is also bearish on gold in his <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/goldman-not-ready-to-short-gold-just-yet-2013-10">latest note to clients</a>, but warns that it's not time to short it quite yet.
"We continue to argue that the key to the gold outlook is data that shows a strong US recovery and gives the market confidence that tapering will begin, says Currie. "We still believe that this is the key trigger for gold prices even as the risks of deferred tapering have increased. Accordingly, we still expect gold to trade close to our near-term target of $1300/toz until the end of this year when our economists expect economic data to begin to show some confirmation of the economic improvement embedded in the 2014 US outlook."

CITI: Gold could shatter $2,000, reach all-time high if recession risks continue

Since gold offers no yield, traders consider it a better investment when central banks slash rates.For this same reason, spot gold jumped as much as 1.8% on Friday as fresh housing data gave investors renewed reason to bet on lower interest rates.In July, new home starts dropped to their <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/housing-market-outlook-new-home-construction-builder-confidence-covid-low-2024-8">lowest level since 2020</a>, the Commerce Department reported. Some of the <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/goldman-long-term-gold-call-1200-2013-1">bearish calls we've heard on gold lately</a> are closely tied to the outlook for real <keyword id="6371181" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="interest-rates">interest rates</keyword>. The idea is that as real interest rates begin to normalize from ultra-low levels, <keyword id="18712" type="ENTERTAINMENT" weightage="60" keywordseo="Gold">gold</keyword> will underperform.
The inverse correlation between the price of gold and the interest rate on 5-year TIPS (Treasury Inflation-Protected Securities), for example, is fairly tight, as the chart below shows.
Yet, when one examines the chart, as <a href="https://twitter.com/Dutch_Book/status/308406125437534208">@Dutch_Book pointed out on Twitter</a>, while the initial sell-off in gold that started in November correlated with a slight backup in real yields, it's definitely starting to appear overdone.
Since then, gold has continued to tumble, even though real yields reversed course and kept heading lower.
