The <keyword id="826" type="CITY" weightage="80" keywordseo="Goa">Goa</keyword> government is considering banning consumption of liquor in <keyword id="6478239" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="80" keywordseo="public-places">public places</keyword> to check nuisance, a senior official said today. 
 
"There are complaints from common people about consumption of liquor in public places, which leads to littering and other nuisance. The existing excise law needs to be amended for the same," Goa's Excise Commissioner Menino D'Souza told PTI. "The state excise department would amend the Goa, <keyword id="6392149" type="CITY" weightage="80" keywordseo="Daman">Daman</keyword> and Diu Excise Act, 1964, which would give powers to the department's inspectors to punish the offenders," he said. 
 
The department has already formed a committee headed by former excise commissioner Ashok Desai to review the existing excise law, D'Souza said. 
 According to government records, there are 332 wholesale liquor shops in Goa, besides 9,445 bars and restaurants serving <keyword id="6359858" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="80" keywordseo="alcohol">alcohol</keyword>. 
D'Souza said the state tourism department has already amended the Goa Tourist Places (Protection and Maintenance) Act to check the nuisance of drunken people at tourist places. 
 "The tourist places are defined as beaches and other spots, and India Reserve Battalion (IRB) of <keyword id="65767" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="80" keywordseo="goa-police">Goa Police</keyword> have been asked to take action against those found <keyword id="31485" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="80" keywordseo="drinking">drinking</keyword> at these places. It is working as a deterrent," he said. 
 
The tourism department took the step after groups of errant tourists were found drinking and breaking glass bottles on the beaches, resulting in several injuries, he said. 
 
However, D'Souza said, the ban needs to be introduced in a balanced way. "There are many families who go on picnics where they drink in open spaces. They don't create nuisance. The ban should not affect such kind of picnics," he said. 
 
The department is also considering to ban liquor consumption in public places during certain hours. 
 
"We can even restrict the timings so that there is a control (on the problem)," he said. 
 
Shops selling cheap liquor on wholesale basis have mushroomed in the state and this has heightened the problem of nuisance caused by drunken people.

On Sunday night, Sawant paid a surprise visit tostate border at Keri village in North Goa district to assessthe implementation of the state governments order. All exams in the state have been postponed andschools are closed till further order.Meanwhile, a delegation of various industrial bodiesin Goa met Sawant at his residence on Monday, urging him toallow the industry work with 20 per cent workforce.The delegation comprised representatives of the GoaChamber of Commerce and Industry (GCCI), Goa Small IndustriesAssociation, Confederation of Indian Industries and others. GCCI president Manoj Caculo told reporters that theymet the chief minister and extending their full support to thestate government in fighting the coronavirus."While supporting the government in its endeavour, theindustry also requested certain relaxations, includingpermission to function with minimum 20 per cent workforce,"Caculo said.The delegation also urged the chief minister to exemptthe pharmaceutical sector from the shut down, he said. In a statement issued after the meeting, the industryplayers said they requested the chief minister for allowing afew concessions sot as to facilitate skeletal services andalso finish some works in progress. The journalist told a superior that <a>Tarun Tejpal</a>, 50-year-old founder of the award-winning weekly <a>Tehelka</a>, had assaulted her twice in a hotel elevator during a conference in the resort state of <a>Goa</a> this month.
The investigation into Tejpal, who denies the accusations, has dominated headlines in <a class="cite">India</a> for 10 days as news outlets follow every twist and turn, and follows similar accusations by an intern against a retired <a class="cite">Supreme Court</a> judge.
"He (Tejpal) has formally been arrested and will be produced before a designated court within 24 hours," Dr. <a class="cite">O.P. Mishra</a>, <a class="cite">Goa</a>'s deputy inspector general of police, told Reuters.
Police have studied closed-circuit video footage from the hotel to establish what happened, but there were no cameras in the elevators, a spokeswoman for <a class="cite">Goa</a>'s chief minister said last week.
In a leaked email to the magazine's management, Tejpal said that an "unfortunate incident" had occurred between himself and the journalist, describing it as "a bad lapse of judgment".
The case has triggered a media debate about silence over the harassment of women at their places of work.
It is also seen as a test of a tougher law on crimes against women that was adopted after a 23-year-old woman was gang-raped on a moving bus in <a class="cite">Delhi</a> last year, beaten and then pushed out onto the street along with her male companion.
She died two weeks later amid an outpouring of anger across <a class="cite">India</a>. Four men were sentenced to death while a teenager was sentenced to juvenile custody.
<a class="cite">India</a>'s working women often face sexual harassment from colleagues, managers or employers, yet few report these cases, fearful of losing their jobs or facing persecution simply for speaking out, gender rights activists say.
