As the counting of the votes began on Thursday morning, the Bharatiya Janata Party was seen leading in the early trends in the states of Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand and Manipur while the <keyword id="6354944" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Aam-Aadmi-Party" source="Orion">Aam Aadmi Party</keyword> made an early headway in Punjab. As per the early trends in Uttar Pradesh, the saffron party was leading on 155 seats while Samajwadi Party was ahead on 97. The <keyword id="6356515" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Bahujan-Samaj-Party" source="Orion">Bahujan Samaj Party</keyword> didn't seem to woo the voters, as it was leading on only 6 seats. The Congress party continued to show its dismal performance and was leading on only 4 seats. The Assembly polls for 403 seats spread over 75 districts were held in seven phases between February 10 and March 7. More than 3.75 lakh voters exercised their franchise using ballot papers. The state's Chief Electoral Officer Ajay Kumar Shukla said that 84 counting centres had been set up across Uttar Pradesh. In Goa, the <keyword id="43771" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="exit-polls" source="Orion">exit polls</keyword> had tipped a keen contest between the ruling <keyword id="14666" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="bjp" source="Orion">BJP</keyword> and the Congress and Goa Forward alliance, with neither being able to reach the magic figure of 21 in a 40-member state Assembly. However, the trends showed the grand-old party -- Congress -- ahead of its arch-rival BJP while the much-hyped AAP, as per the early trends, didn't seem to impress the electorate at all as it was not leading on any seat. Nearly 79 per cent voters cast ballots in the February 14 polls in Goa. In Punjab, the multi-cornered electoral battle is probably heading for a comfortable victory for the AAP as the early trends gave an edge to the Bhagwant Mann-led party over the ruling Congress. The Shiromani Akali Dal was coming as the third party. The exit polls had predicted a landslide victory for the Arvind Kejriwal-led Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) in Punjab. A total of 1,304 candidates, including 93 women and two transgenders, are in the fray. The state recorded a voter turnout of 71.95 per cent, the lowest percentage compared to the voting percentage in three previous Assembly polls. In Manipur, as per the early trends, the saffron party is heading for a landslide victory. According to the election officials, around 89.3 per cent of the 20,48,169-strong electorate cast their votes in the two-phase election to the 60-member Manipur Assembly on February 28 and March 5. This year's voting percentage was higher than the 2017 and 2012 Assembly elections, when 86.4 per cent and 79.5 per cent electorate had exercised their franchise respectively. In Uttarakhand, even as the BJP is leading in the early trends, it is still hard to predict the results as the Congress party is not much behind. The new-entrant AAP, like Goa, has failed to make any impact on the voters so far. A Union territory located in the Southwestern coast of India called as the Konkan, Goa is bordered by Maharashtra, Karnataka and the Arabian Sea. Spanning over an area of 3,702 square kilometers, Goa has on its electoral rolls 11,27,007 eligible voters with the ratio of 5,51,862 males and 5,75,145 females. In 2014 Lok Sabha elections, Goa elected the BJP candidates from both its constituencies. From North Goa seat, BJP’s Sripad Yesso Naik won four times consecutively during the Lok Sabha elections and became the MP in 1999, 2004, 2009 and 2014. In the South Goa seat, Narendra Sawaiker of BJP won in 2014 Lok Sabha elections. Before him, the seat was held by the Congress candidate Francisco Sardinha who won in 2009 Lok Sabha elections. The two Lok Sabha constituencies in Goa are North Goa and South Goa. Both these constituencies went for polling in 2019 Lok Sabha elections on April 23 during the third phase of elections across the country. There are no reserved seats in the union territory of Goa. Goa also sends 1 Rajya Sabha member from here. Goa has 40 assembly constituencies and the state went for assembly elections for the last time in March 2017.

Goa exit poll 2019 of Lok Sabha Elections

As India nears the results of 17th Lok Sabha election 2019 with the last phase of polling on Sunday, it is yet to be seen if the Narendra Modi-led BJP government will make it to power this time. While the exit polls have been predicted incorrectly in the past, the 2014 exit polls were found to be nearly accurate. Looking back to the data compiled during the 2014 Lok Sabha elections, the exit polls portrayed nearly the same picture as that on the result day. Reportedly, the exit polls witnessed a majority of seats to go to BJP. The ruling party had won 282 seats during the last elections, while the Congress managed a handful of seats(44) from all the constituencies. The BJP government won majority of seats in Gujarat, Delhi, Rajasthan, Goa and Uttarakhand. Interestingly, AIADMK stood third on the list, winning 37 of the 39 constituencies. Mamata Banerjee led TMC won 34 of the 42 seats. The 2019 general elections were started on 11 April 2019, and will conclude on 23 May, as the result of the seven phases gets declared.

Exit polls 2019: How accurate were the pollsters the last time

The CVoter exit poll predicts a neck and neck battle between the <keyword id="1575" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Congress">Congress</keyword> and the <keyword id="14666" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="BJP">BJP</keyword> in Goa. 
 
None of the parties seem to be gaining a clear majority in the 40-member state assembly. The ruling BJP is expected to win anywhere between 15-21 seats in North and South Goa, CVoter exit poll reported. The Congress is projected to win 5 to 9 seats in North Goa, and between 6 to 10 seats in South Goa. 
 
The fate of Aam Aadmi Party's debut in Goa, seen as an interloper by opponents, hangs in the balance. CVoter predicts a narrow margin of 0-4 seats for the predominantly north-Indian party. 
 An alliance of <keyword id="179525" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Maharashtrawadi-Gomantak-Party">Maharashtrawadi Gomantak Party</keyword> (MGP), Shiv Sena and Goa Suraksha Manch (GSM) is also competing for the 40-member House. The BJP, which had a pre-poll alliance in 2012, went alone this time after the MGP snapped the partnership. 
 
Other parties are expected to capture 2 to 8 seats in the state assembly. 
 
If these figures turn out to be accurate, a hung house becomes a very real possibility in the country's smallest state. 
 Goa, which went to polls on February 4, had a record-breaking 83 per cent voter turnout. The counting of votes in Goa will take place on March 11, along with four other states - <keyword id="44522" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Uttarakhand">Uttarakhand</keyword>, Punjab, Manipur and Uttar Pradesh, where Assembly polls were held.

Moreover, the fall in crude oil prices after a significant jump also boosted the rally in the market after UAE promised additional oil production to support the market, which was being disrupted because of sanctions on Russia after it invaded Ukraine. Reportedly, the UAE is among the few members of the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) that have spare capacity to increase output. Moreover, the US has also asked oil producers worldwide to increase production if they can.  BJP is projected to make impressive gains in Uttar Pradesh, <keyword id="44522" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Uttarakhand">Uttarakhand</keyword> and Manipur and fight tough in Goa. 
 But for Punjab, where its alliance with the <keyword id="6357030" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Shiromani-Akali-Dal">Shiromani Akali Dal</keyword> seemed doomed from the start, the party's leadership can feel happy for now. 
 Apart from the BJP, the Congress and the <keyword id="6354944" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Aam-Aadmi-Party">Aam Aadmi Party</keyword> also fared well. 
 If we had to look at the real losers in the game, they are SAD and the <keyword id="6354265" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="samajwadi-party">Samajwadi Party</keyword>. 
 
The Congress is showing a comeback in Punjab after almost a decade, fighting neck and neck in Goa and performing decently in Uttarakhand, despite a bunch of defections. 
 
Electoral alliance with the SP in Uttar Pradesh benefitted it, but ended up marring SP's performance. 
 
In Manipur, meanwhile, the BJP made impressive gains, but the exit polls show the Congress managed to fight back some as the battle is still neck and neck. 
 
 
As for AAP, in Punjab, it has gone from non-existent in 2012 to between 60-70 seats according to exit polls. 
 
As per exit polls, the Congress or AAP will take Punjab, the BJP is leading - by a lot - in Uttar Pradesh, and the BJP or the Congress will take Goa, Uttarakhand and Manipur. 
 
Pretty impressive showing by the BJP which didn't project chief ministerial candidates in any of the states it contested - except for maybe in Goa.

Uttar Pradesh is staring at the prospect of a hung Assembly, as most exit polls predict huge gains here for the BJP but not an outright majority needed to form the government. 
 
In Punjab, the race between the Congress and the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) is too close to call. 
 
Three exit polls give the BJP a clear majority in the 70-member Uttarakhand assembly. 
 
The CVoter survey predicted that the BJP will emerge as the largest single party in Manipur, dethroning the Congress for the first time in 15 years. On the other hand, the Axis exit poll gives Congress the lead in the state, with a cautious prediction that it will remain in power. 
 
The CVoter exit poll predicts a close-fought battle between the Congress and the BJP to gain control of Goa, with both parties unlikely to gain a clear majority in the 40-member state assembly.

 BJP’s Goa President Vinay Tendulkar, on the other hand, stated that exit polls which predicted a win for the NDA were a sign of voter confidence in India’s incumbent Prime Minister, Narendra Modi.

 Digging into BJP’s comeback In North Goa, the competition is between BJP’s incumbent Pad Yasso Naik versus Congress’ Girish Chodankar and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP)’s Pradeep Padgaonkar. In South Goa, BJP’s Narendra Keshav Sawaikar is looking for second terms while fielding off Francisco Sardinha from Congress and Elvis Gomes from AAP. The biggest threat to BJP’s comeback is the state’s mining issue. The Indian Supreme Court has had to shut down many mines over the past five years owing to the environmental endangerment. The North Goa Congress candidate, Girish Chodankar, is promising to bring about sustainable mining so that livelihoods aren’t affected by any bans on mining. Narendra Sawaikar, the incumbent BJP candidate from South Goa, has an opposing opinion that the people in the mining belts will stand by the party. The recent drop in revenue — <a href="https://www.business-standard.com/article/pti-stories/tourism-slump-in-goa-a-key-issue-in-ls-polls-stakeholders-119040800633_1.html">as much as</a> 40% — from the tourism industry doesn’t play in BJP’s favour either. BJP set to return in UP with 'handsome win aided with pro-incumbency'

Amidst the multi-cornered contest in Punjab, early leads on Thursday indicated the Aam Aadmi Party (<keyword id="6356115" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="aap" source="Orion">AAP</keyword>) is heading to a landslide maiden victory in the state, trailing the traditional parties -- Congress and Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD). Prominent faces who were trailing in the first two hours of counting of ballots included five-time former Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal from his bastion Lambi; Congress chief ministerial candidate and incumbent Charanjit Singh Channi on both seats -- Chamkaur Sahib, a reserved seat that he has won three consecutive times, and Bhadaur in Barnala district; and Congress state unit chief Navjot Sidhu from Amritsar (East), the seat that came into being after 2012 delimitation and has backed Sidhu and his namesake wife -- Navjot Kaur. AAP is leading in 92 seats in Punjab elections, Congress in 18

The BJP took winning leads in both Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand while the Congress raced ahead of the AAP in Punjab as officials counted votes polled in assembly elections. 
 
In Goa, the Congress was leading in eight constituencies to the BJP's three. 
 
Bharatiya Janata Party candidates led in 190 of the 277 seats in Uttar Pradesh after one hour of counting, with party leaders saying that the BJP could win as many as 250 of the 403 seats if this trend continued. 
 
In contrast, the alliance of the ruling Samajwadi Party and the Congress led in 64 constituencies, followed by the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) in 23. 
 
Election Commission officials said the BJP was leading in most major cities including Allahabad, Lucknow and Kanpur. 
 
Even in Amethi, Congress Vice President Rahul Gandhi's Lok Sabha constituency, the BJP's Garima Singh had forged ahead. 
 
The story was no different in neighbouring Congress-ruled Uttarakhand where BJP candidates led in 27 of the 33 seats where counting trends were available.

The Congress was in the lead in five seats and the BSP in one seat. 
 
In Punjab, defying most exit polls which had projected a neck-and-neck outcome, the Congress had forged ahead in 50 of the 86 seats followed by the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) in 22. 
 
The ruling Shiromani Akali Dal-BJP combine led in 13 seats. 
 
Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal, 89, was leading from his Lambi seat over his rivals Amarinder Singh (Congress) and Jarnail Singh (AAP). 
 
But his son and Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Singh Badal trailed to AAP's Bhagwant Mann in Jalalabad. 
 
Counting of votes for the 117 Punjab assembly seats as well as the by-election to the Amritsar Lok Sabha seat was on. The Amritsar Lok Sabha seat was vacated by Amarinder Singh in November. 
 
A party needs 59 seats to gain a simple majority in Punjab. 
 
In Manipur, the ruling Congress led in eight of the 14 constituencies, officials said, followed by the BJP in three. Smaller parties led in three constituencies.

BREAKING NEWS: BJP sweeps UP

The Bharatiya Janata Party, led by <keyword id="6354477" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Narendra-Modi">Narendra Modi</keyword>, created history in the just-concluded elections by becoming the first party since 1984 (the year Indira Gandhi was assassinated) to win majority on its own. The exit polls had predicted a Modi tsunami but it turned out to be a tsuNaMo. 
 The only chunk in the armour for the <keyword id="14666" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="BJP">BJP</keyword> was the defeat of Arun Jaitley from Amritsar. Jaitley was widely speculated to get a major portfolio in the next government (probably the finance ministry). However, he might find a Cabinet berth despite losing the <keyword id="6359191" type="EVENT" weightage="100" keywordseo="election">election</keyword> as Rajnath Singh has said that “the party would fully utilise his abilities.” 
 The <keyword id="1575" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="Congress">Congress</keyword>’ entire India tally was reduced to a meagre 44, which is way below the BJP’s tally of 71 from UP alone. The drubbing was so massive that the ruling party could not even manage to get 55 seats (10% of the total number of Lok Sabha seats) required to nominate the leader of opposition. 
 
The decimated Congress failed to open its account in as many as nine states – Delhi, Rajasthan, Gujarat, Jammu and Kashmir, Odisha, Tamil Nadu, Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh and Goa. On the other hand, the BJP, riding on the Modi wave, conquered all the seats in Gujarat, Rajasthan, Delhi, Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh and Goa. 
 
With such a strong mandate in his favour, now Modi needs to live up to the expectations of the people and usher in all round development and good governance. Modi showed his humble side after his victory. Addressing his supporters in Vadodara, Modi spoke about taking everyone along and gave the mantra of “sabka sath, sabka vikaas.” 
 
The most positive outcome of the result has been the fact that the new government will not be constrained by or subjected to blackmailing by the coalition partners. The outgoing Prime Minister, Manmohan Singh, had often referred to coalition compulsions and admitted that he had to make some compromises in the name of coalition dharma. 
 
Any analysis of the election results would remain incomplete without a special mention of Uttar Pradesh, where people rejected caste-based politics, reducing Mayawati’s BSP to nought. It shows that voters have become aspirational and can no longer be swayed by empty caste rhetoric and symbolism. However, it would be premature to write her off completely as her party, though could not win any seat, managed to get a vote share of 19.6%. 
 In Bihar too, the Modi wave shattered Lalu’s dream of making a comeback and he could not increase his party’s 2009 tally of just four seats. <keyword id="6358190" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Nitish-Kumar">Nitish Kumar</keyword>’s JD (U) also faced a rout and could win just two seats. Following this, he put in his papers on ‘moral grounds’. However, it seems more of a face-saving exercise as there were reports of growing discontent within his party. Now, JD (U) President Sharad Yadav has extended a lifeline to Lalu by signalling an alliance between the arch rivals. 
 The results also show Congress Vice-President <keyword id="5268" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Rahul-Gandhi">Rahul Gandhi</keyword>’s growing disconnect with the masses over the years. When scams after scams propped up during UPA II, he seemed oblivious to it. Neither he nor outgoing PM Manmohan Singh ever took any step to crack down on graft. Gandhi never talked to the media on uncomfortable issues and was seen as a leader who refused to own up responsibility. 
 
The BJP had undergone a transition within the party before the polls as it required a new face after the debacle under LK Advani. The Congress, too, after successive debacles under Rahul Gandhi, needs to look for a new face with fresh ideas.
