Despite scoring a narrow victory, BJP's Panaji assembly candidate Atanasio Monserrate on Thursday blamed the party's cadre and workers for unofficially supporting former Chief Minister late <keyword id="6363133" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="manohar-parrikar" source="Orion">Manohar Parrikar</keyword>'s son Utpal over him. Speaking to reports after claiming victory over <keyword id="7519855" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="utpal-parrikar" source="Orion">Utpal Parrikar</keyword> who contested as an independent candidate, Monserrate said BJP workers also worked against his wife Jennifer who contested the elections from adjoining Taleigao assembly seat, also on a BJP ticket. "I am telling you, I feel the BJP cadre has not accepted me in the party. I look at it that way. That is the reason. If he (Utpal) could get so many votes, it means the cadre shifted their votes to him. I can say only that the BJP leadership here did not manage to do damage control," Monserrate said, after claiming a victory with 700 odd votes. The result has not been formally announced by the Election Commission of India yet. "Secondly, BJP workers also worked against Jennifer. To give you one insight, the president of the BJP women's cell was sitting on the Congress table on the day of elections," he said. Monserrate and his wife Jennifer joined the BJP as a part of a 10-member breakaway unit of Congress legislators in 2019. "I never expected this result... The BJP has not accepted me in the party. I joined BJP two years ago, but the BJP cadre has not accepted me in the party. The party did nothing from day one," Monserrate said. When asked to respond to Monserrate's comments, Chief Minister Pramod Sawant said that he would "analyse them later". Describing the contest against Monserrate, Utpal Parrikar who made his electoral debut, said that the contest was a "good fight". Winning BJP candidate blames party for supporting Manohar Parrikar's son in Goa

As the counting of the votes began on Thursday morning, the Bharatiya Janata Party was seen leading in the early trends in the states of Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand and Manipur while the <keyword id="6354944" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Aam-Aadmi-Party" source="Orion">Aam Aadmi Party</keyword> made an early headway in Punjab. As per the early trends in Uttar Pradesh, the saffron party was leading on 155 seats while Samajwadi Party was ahead on 97. The <keyword id="6356515" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Bahujan-Samaj-Party" source="Orion">Bahujan Samaj Party</keyword> didn't seem to woo the voters, as it was leading on only 6 seats. The Congress party continued to show its dismal performance and was leading on only 4 seats. The Assembly polls for 403 seats spread over 75 districts were held in seven phases between February 10 and March 7. More than 3.75 lakh voters exercised their franchise using ballot papers. The state's Chief Electoral Officer Ajay Kumar Shukla said that 84 counting centres had been set up across Uttar Pradesh. In Goa, the <keyword id="43771" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="exit-polls" source="Orion">exit polls</keyword> had tipped a keen contest between the ruling <keyword id="14666" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="bjp" source="Orion">BJP</keyword> and the Congress and Goa Forward alliance, with neither being able to reach the magic figure of 21 in a 40-member state Assembly. However, the trends showed the grand-old party -- Congress -- ahead of its arch-rival BJP while the much-hyped AAP, as per the early trends, didn't seem to impress the electorate at all as it was not leading on any seat. Nearly 79 per cent voters cast ballots in the February 14 polls in Goa. In Punjab, the multi-cornered electoral battle is probably heading for a comfortable victory for the AAP as the early trends gave an edge to the Bhagwant Mann-led party over the ruling Congress. The Shiromani Akali Dal was coming as the third party. The exit polls had predicted a landslide victory for the Arvind Kejriwal-led Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) in Punjab. A total of 1,304 candidates, including 93 women and two transgenders, are in the fray. The state recorded a voter turnout of 71.95 per cent, the lowest percentage compared to the voting percentage in three previous Assembly polls. In Manipur, as per the early trends, the saffron party is heading for a landslide victory. According to the election officials, around 89.3 per cent of the 20,48,169-strong electorate cast their votes in the two-phase election to the 60-member Manipur Assembly on February 28 and March 5. This year's voting percentage was higher than the 2017 and 2012 Assembly elections, when 86.4 per cent and 79.5 per cent electorate had exercised their franchise respectively. In Uttarakhand, even as the BJP is leading in the early trends, it is still hard to predict the results as the Congress party is not much behind. The new-entrant AAP, like Goa, has failed to make any impact on the voters so far. <ul><li>The <keyword id="40807" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Election-Commission">Election Commission</keyword> has issued a notification that no victory processions should take place on or after the results of state elections are tallied on May 2.</li><li>This means the winning party in Tamil Nadu, Assam, West Bengal, Puducherry and Kerala will not be allowed to take to streets and encourage the gathering of people.</li><li>The development comes after the <keyword id="6360667" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="madras-high-court">Madras High Court</keyword> told the ECI is it should be ‘booked on murder charges’ for its handling of the pre-election political rallies and campaigns.</li></ul>The <keyword id="65281" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Election-Commission-of-India">Election Commission of India</keyword> (ECI) has banned all victory processions and celebrations after the results of the state elections in Tamil Nadu, Assam, Puducherry, West Bengal, and Kerala come out on May 2. The ECI has also dictated that no more than two people shall be allowed to accompany the winning candidate when they come to collect their election certificate. “In view of the surge in COVID-19 cases throughout the country, the commission has decided to make more stringent provisions to be followed during the process of counting,” said the notification.  Digging into BJP’s comeback In North Goa, the competition is between BJP’s incumbent Pad Yasso Naik versus Congress’ Girish Chodankar and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP)’s Pradeep Padgaonkar. In South Goa, BJP’s Narendra Keshav Sawaikar is looking for second terms while fielding off Francisco Sardinha from Congress and Elvis Gomes from AAP. The biggest threat to BJP’s comeback is the state’s mining issue. The Indian Supreme Court has had to shut down many mines over the past five years owing to the environmental endangerment. Jobs and production have come to a stand still as the mining industry and the Indian government have been locked in a stalemate on the issue. <a href="https://www.thehindubusinessline.com/news/elections/in-goa-the-mining-ban-weighs-heavily-on-elections/article26888384.ece">Goan mining lobbies</a> aren’t happy and suspect that the BJP isn’t reinstating mining rights because it wants to sell the resources to larger companies like Jindal or Adani; harshly affecting the income of around 300,000 people in the state. The North Goa Congress candidate, Girish Chodankar, is promising to bring about sustainable mining so that livelihoods aren’t affected by any bans on mining. Narendra Sawaikar, the incumbent BJP candidate from South Goa, has an opposing opinion that the people in the mining belts will stand by the party. The recent drop in revenue — <a href="https://www.business-standard.com/article/pti-stories/tourism-slump-in-goa-a-key-issue-in-ls-polls-stakeholders-119040800633_1.html">as much as</a> 40% — from the tourism industry doesn’t play in BJP’s favour either. Both industries are the primary sources of employment in the state.
