As many as 290 cases of <keyword id="21545939" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="KP-2" source="keywords">KP.2</keyword> and 34 cases of <keyword id="21748081" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="KP-1" source="keywords">KP.1</keyword>, both sub-lineages of COVID-19 that are responsible for surge in cases in Singapore, have been found in India, according to official data. However, a source in the Union health ministry told PTI that they are all sub variants of <keyword id="20115417" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="JN1" source="keywords">JN1</keyword> and there is no associated increase in hospitalisation and severe cases. "So there is no reason for concern or panic. The mutations will keep happening at a rapid pace and this is the natural behaviour of viruses like SARS-CoV2," the source said. The source further said that the INSACOG surveillance is sensitive and is able to pick up the emergence of any new variant and samples are also picked from hospitals in a structured manner to detect any change in the severity of disease due to virus. Data compiled by the Indian SARS-CoV-2 Genomics Consortium (INSACOG) showed that 34 cases of KP.1 have been found across seven states and UTs with 23 cases registered from West Bengal. The other states are Goa (1), Gujarat (2), Haryana (1), Maharashtra (4) Rajasthan (2) and Uttarakhand (1). As many as 290 cases of KP.2 have been registered with Maharashtra reporting the highest number at 148, according to the data. The other states and Union territories are Delhi (1), Goa (12), Gujarat (23), Haryana (3), Karnataka (4), Madhya Pradesh (1), Odisha (17), Rajasthan (21), Uttar Pradesh (8), Uttarakhand (16) and West Bengal (36). Singapore is seeing a new COVID-19 wave as the authorities recorded more than 25,900 cases from May 5 to 11 with KP.1 and KP.2 accounting for over two-thirds of cases in Singapore. Globally, the predominant COVID-19 variants are still JN.1 and its sub-lineages, including KP.1 and KP.2. KP.1 and KP.2 belong to a group of COVID-19 variants scientists have nicknamed 'FLiRT', after the technical names of their mutations. The strains in FLiRT are all descendants of the JN.1 variant, an offshoot of the Omicron variant. KP.2 was classified by the World Health Organization as a Variant Under Monitoring.

The Goa government is working on a new set of SOPs, which will make it mandatory for all hotels in the state to maintain isolation rooms for tourists and guests who test positive for Covid-19, Health Minister Vishwajit Rane said on Wednesday. Rane also said that the state Health Ministry was in the process of upping the daily coronavirus testing quantum to an average of 2,000 tests every day. "We are also bringing new SOPs, so that every hotel will now have to have some isolation rooms. They need to maintain such rooms. Suppose they have some guests, who turns positive, it is their responsibility to isolate them," Rane said, adding that guidelines to the effect would be issued by the Goa government soon. Rane also said that tourists should visit Goa and added that as long as a proper medical system is in place in the state, there was no reason to worry about a spike in the number of Covid-19 cases. The Health Minister also said that his ministry was working towards upping the daily number of Covid-19 tests to 2,000 every day. "We are working on that. Our testing has been a bit up and down, but we want to reach that 2,000 figure," Rane said. Over the last few days, Goa has witnessed a numeric dip in the number of Covid-19 positive cases reported every day, with the tally touching two digits for the first time on November 14. On November 16 and 17, however, Goa reported 125 and 154 positive cases respectively. On an average, between 1,500-1,700 tests are conducted every day, with the number dipping considerably during weekends. In all 46,182 confirmed cases have been reported in Goa, where the Covid death tally stands at 667. Goa hotels are now mandated to maintain isolation rooms

A day after <keyword id="826" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Goa">Goa</keyword>'s Health Minister Vishwajit Rane recommended ivermectin to all above 18 to combat <keyword id="8764262" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="covid">Covid</keyword> in the state, the <keyword id="6356311" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="World-Health-Organisation">World Health Organisation</keyword> on Tuesday has warned against its use. "Safety and efficacy are important when using any drug for a new indication. @WHO recommends against the use of ivermectin for #COVID19 except within clinical trials," Soumya Swaminathan, the global health body's chief scientist, said in a tweet. The Goa state government on Monday cleared a new Covid treatment protocol which recommends all residents above the age of 18 to take five tablets of the ivermectin drug, in order to prevent the steep and sometimes fatal viral fever, which accompanies a <keyword id="8763838" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="covid-19">Covid-19</keyword> infection. Rane, while speaking to reporters, said that the ivermectin drug would be made available at all health centres in the state and should be taken by all residents, irrespective of whether they have Covid-19 symptoms or otherwise. Last week, a peer-reviewed research had claimed that global ivermectin use can end Covid-19 pandemic, as the medicine significantly reduces the risk of contracting the deadly respiratory disease when used regularly. The peer review, which included three US government senior scientists and was published in the American Journal of Therapeutics, touted the common anti-parasitic ivermectin as a miracle cure for Covid-19 by doctors and campaigners the world over. In her tweet, Swaminathan also attached a warning issued by the German health care and life sciences giant Merck. "Scientists continue to carefully examine the findings of all available and emerging studies of ivermectin for the treatment of Covid-19," read the statement from Merck. "...to-date, our analysis has identified: No scientific basis for a potential therapeutic effect against Covid-19 from pre-clinical studies; No meaningful evidence for clinical activity or clinical efficacy in patients with Covid-19 disease, and; A concerning lack of safety data in the majority of studies," the statement added. The WHO had, in March, issued a similar warning against the use of ivermectin in treating Covid patients. The global health agency said that there was a "very low certainty of evidence" on ivermectin's effects on mortality, hospital admission and getting rid of the virus from the body. Rane also stated that expert panels from the UK, Italy, Spain and Japan, found a large, statistically significant reduction in mortality, time to recovery and viral clearance in Covid-19 patients treated with ivermectin. The <keyword id="6356255" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="us-food-and-drug-administration">US Food and Drug Administration</keyword> (<keyword id="6354656" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="fda">FDA</keyword>) had also, in April last year, recommended against the use of ivermectin in treating Covid patients. Besides, the Union ministry of health and family welfare had also reportedly opted out from including Ivermectin in its official Clinical Management Protocol for Covid-19 last year. WHO reiterates its stand against using Ivermectin to treat COVID-19, a day after Goa’s health minister recommended it

The GDP contribution and jobs supported in India has more than doubled since 2019, the year before the COVID-19 pandemic struck resulting in lockdowns and international border restrictions. The report also highlighted the powerful multiplier effect Airbnb guest spending has within local communities. In 2022-23, Airbnb guests spent a total of $815 million in India in areas like purchases on transportation, restaurants, retail stores, and retail stores. The spending has more than doubled from 2019 levels. In India, Airbnb’s presence was the highest in <keyword id="826" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="goa" source="Orion">Goa</keyword>, where Airbnb guests spending amounted to almost $190 million, this was followed by Bangalore and Delhi, Mumbai and Manali. It details the significant contribution made by Airbnb guests to domestic tourism across the nation. In 2022-23, domestic Airbnb guest spending totalled $670 million, and accounted for approximately 82% of total Airbnb guest spend in India, around a three-fold increase from 2019. The report also explores two profound changes in travel behaviour since the pandemic: the dispersal of tourism away from urban areas, and long-term stays driven by the emergence of flexible work arrangements. James Lambert, Director for Economic Consulting in Asia for Oxford Economics said, Airbnb has clearly played a major role in the resilience and rebirth of the Indian travel and tourism sector in the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic. “Airbnb has been at the heart of some of the trends reshaping the nation’s travel and tourism industry, including the shift in travel away from cities and towards more rural communities, and the increase in demand for long-stay trips, exemplified by the live and work anywhere phenomenon, Lambert said. Amanpreet Bajaj, Airbnb’s General Manager for India, Southeast Asia, Hong Kong and Taiwan said, “Travel is now more dispersed, and so the economic benefits are being shared across more destinations, enabling a valuable economic contribution to rural and regional areas. This dispersal is being driven by Hosts on Airbnb and in turn creating economic opportunities for various communities. The report explores the twelve months to March 2023 — representing a year since travel restrictions started to be removed across India.

With 5,383 new coronavirus infections being reported in a day, <keyword id="3658" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="india" source="Orion">India</keyword>'s total tally of COVID-19 cases rose to 4,45,58,425, while the active cases declined to 45,281, according to the <keyword id="83655" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="union-health-ministry" source="Orion">Union Health Ministry</keyword> data updated on Friday. The death toll climbed to 5,28,449 with 20 fatalities which includes eight deaths reconciled by Kerala, the data updated at 8 am stated. The active cases comprise 0.10 per cent of the total infections, while the national COVID-19 recovery rate increased to 98.71 per cent, the ministry said. A decline of 1,061 cases has been recorded in the active COVID-19 caseload in a span of 24 hours. The daily positivity rate was recorded at 1.68 per cent while weekly positivity rate was recorded at 1.70 per cent, according to the ministry. The number of people who have recuperated from the disease surged to 4,39,84,695, while the case fatality rate was recorded at 1.19 per cent. According to the ministry, 217.26 crore doses of Covid vaccine have been administered in the country so far under the nationwide vaccination drive. India's COVID-19 tally had crossed the 20-lakh mark on August 7, 2020, 30 lakh on August 23, 40 lakh on September 5 and 50 lakh on September 16. It went past 60 lakh on September 28, 70 lakh on October 11, crossed 80 lakh on October 29, 90 lakh on November 20 and surpassed the one-crore mark on December 19. The country crossed the grim milestone of two crore on May 4 and three crore on June 23 last year. It crossed the four-crore mark on January 25 this year. The 12 fatalities reported in the last 24 hours include three from Maharashtra and one each from Chhattisgarh, Goa and Gujarat. Active Covid cases in country decline to 45,281

Panaji, <keyword id="826" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Goa">Goa</keyword>'s <keyword id="53865" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="tourism-industry">tourism industry</keyword> may have suffered a loss of between ₹2,000 to ₹7,200 crore and job losses in the range of 35% to 58% on account of the <keyword id="8902449" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="covid-19-pandemic">Covid-19 pandemic</keyword>, an official report said. The report 'Coping with COVID-19: Survival and Revival of Goa's Tourism Industry' compiled by <keyword id="10458902" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="the-goa-tourism-ministry">the Goa Tourism Ministry</keyword> and consultancy firm KPMG Advisory Services Pvt. Ltd, also said that the state tourism industry directly contributes 16.43% revenue towards the <keyword id="2284783" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="State-Gross-Domestic-Product">state Gross Domestic Product</keyword> (GDP) and approximately 35% of state's population is directly employed by the tourism sector. The report was based on a survey conducted by the Goa Tourism Ministry and KPMG which involved reaching out to 600 respondents. The objective of the survey was aimed at examining the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic on the tourism industry in Goa and also offers recommendations to allow tourism stakeholders to "survive, revive and thrive". "This survey was really a ground-breaking initiative as, for the first time, it covered the tourism industry in a very comprehensive manner, from upscale starred hotels to guest houses, from shacks to taxi drivers, independent guides, freelancers, etc," a statement issued by the Goa government said. The data collected from the survey, will be utilised for mitigating the challenges posed by the pandemic, the statement added. Goa is regarded as one of the top beach and nightlife tourism destinations in the country and attracted nearly eight million <keyword id="10459644" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="tourists-last-year">tourists last year</keyword>. The Covid-19 pandemic has however severely impacted tourist footfalls to Goa this year.
