Go First chief Kaushik Khona has told employees that the airline has been crippled by recurring <keyword id="382682" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Pratt-Whitney" source="Orion">Pratt &amp; Whitney</keyword> engine troubles and assured that the carrier is doing everything possible to navigate the situation with utmost care and concern for all staff. The no-frills carrier has filed an application for voluntary insolvency proceedings and has also cancelled all its flights for three days starting Wednesday. In a message to employees late on Tuesday, Khona said that a terrible crisis has been created by Pratt &amp; Whitney's failure to <keyword id="15312689" type="TOPIC" weightage="60" keywordseo="Supply" source="TOPIC" sourcekeytype="economy,investopedia" meta.keywordsubtype="null" meta.msid="93027566" meta.seopath="s/supply" meta.entityname="Supply" meta.hostid="153" meta.entityid="supply">supply</keyword> engines. For more than 12 months, the airline's management has tried their level best to convince P&amp;W to provide spare engines, repair engines. However, P&amp;W has been stonewalling the discussions, the CEO said, adding that it moved Emergency Arbitration in Singapore. According to the airline, the arbitrator ordered P&amp;W to supply at least 10 serviceable spare leased engines by April 27 and a further 10 spare leased engines per month until December 2023. "With that, the airline would have had all its A320 neo aircraft operational by August/ September 2023... unfortunately, Pratt &amp; Whitney has chosen to defy the order from the Emergency Arbitrator," Khona said in the message. The airline approached the arbitrator, who reinforced the order and since P&amp;W "chose to defy for the second time", it filed enforcement proceedings at a US court seeking implementation of the order, he added. More than half of the airline's fleet is grounded due to engine issues. With a depleted fleet size, Khona said the airline is not able to generate <keyword id="15308831" type="TOPIC" weightage="60" keywordseo="Revenue" source="TOPIC" sourcekeytype="business,investopedia" meta.keywordsubtype="null" meta.msid="92973114" meta.seopath="r/revenue" meta.entityname="Revenue" meta.hostid="153" meta.entityid="revenue">revenue</keyword> for the payment of lessors, and as a result, they are taking coercive steps against the company by invoking letters of credit, grounding notices and demanding return of aircraft. "... The company has been crippled by the recurring Pratt &amp; Whitney engine troubles. Pratt &amp; Whitney's defiance in not supplying spare engines as instructed by the Emergency Arbitrator has ground your company to a halt," he told the staff. Against this backdrop, Khona said there was no other option other than seeking voluntary insolvency resolution proceedings to preserve the company's operations by taking effective steps. Addressing the employees as "Go Getters", the CEO said, "we want to reassure you that we are doing everything possible to navigate this situation with the utmost care and concern for all employees". "I am hopeful that once the application under section 10 of IBC for interim relief is considered, we will be in a better position to update you with a further action plan, as and when we receive orders from NCLT," he added. Section 10 of the Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code (IBC) pertains to voluntary insolvency resolution proceedings and applications in this regard are filed before the National Company Law Tribunal (NCLT). For the pilots of <keyword id="120816" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="go-airlines" source="Orion">Go Airlines</keyword> (India) Ltd, it seems their employer is a "no go airline" and the race is on as to who will board the <keyword id="2573" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="air-india" source="Orion">Air India</keyword>. Incidentally, Go Airlines' brand is Go First and for the pilots it seems to "get away first". "The pilots from Go Airlines are experienced and they are ready to fly. It will be a good catch for Air India," a senior pilot told IANS preferring anonymity. According to him, the hiring will be for Air India and not a common recruitment for Air India, Vistara and AirAsia. "Ultimately Vistara and AirAsia may be merged with Air India. So there is no point going there and coming back to Air India," the official added. According to reports, Air India has extended the walk-in interview at Gurugram for Airbus A320 pilots by a day owing to a large number of applicants from Go Airlines. It's the great airborne travel question of our age: To recline, or not to recline?
Of course, the core of the problem is the coach airline seat itself. While there's been, it seems, near constant innovation for first- and business-class seats, the stalwart coach seat has suffered with the same design since the 1960s, according to <a href="http://www.airgodesign.com/">AirGo Design</a>, a Singapore-based startup that wants to reinvent the genre.
"AirGo is the only aircraft seat in the world which is designed based on actual 3D scanning data of human body and therefore, is ergonomically superior," the company's co-founder and Chief Technology Officer, <a>Alireza Yaghoubi, r</a>ecently told BizDaily in a Q&amp;A<a>. (The company was founded in 2013).</a>
As you can see from this screenshot of AirGo's Orion seating system, reclining isn't an issue: The seat behind and the seat in front are designed to prevent one passenger's actions from interfering with another passenger's space.

Elliott noted <a class="link_about">Yaghoubi's view that </a>"technology exists to offer everyone on the plane ample legroom and space to move in coach class. But it would require a significant investment, and...airlines prefer to sink that money into first-class passengers, who are deemed more valuable."
Consequently, the first-class seat becomes progressively more sophisticated, while the coach seat - at least of late - encourages passenger conflict, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/knee-defender-2014-8">inspires controversial anti-reclining gadgets</a>, and is probably starting to annoy pilots as they worry about diverted landings to hand over combative economy travelers to the authorities.

Go-Air will have its first major expansion drive since its inception 10 years ago, under the able-leadership of its new CEO <keyword id="289256" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Wolfgang-Prock-Schauer">Wolfgang Prock-Schauer</keyword>. The Wadia Group-owned airline will receive the first of its 72 ordered aircraft early next year. That will increase its fleet size to 20, helping <keyword id="6356167" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="GoAir">GoAir</keyword> meet the requirement to fly international — five years' domestic flying experience and a fleet of at least 20 planes. 

	"Basically, the logic of this business (short-haul international travel) and customer needs are very similar to domestic travel. They all want reliable affordable transportation," Prock-Schauer told ET.
 

	He particularly sees an opportunity in the Gulf and surrounding markets in the East. "The flights are (on average) three hours, which is not very different from a flight to the south or Kolkata," he said. 
 

	GoAir operates a fleet of Airbus A320s, with which "you can do a lot of things", Prock-Schauer, 58, said. He has been in this industry for three-and-a-half decades and had headed different airlines in different countries, including Jet Airways, British Midland Airways and Air Berlin. He was also chairman, management board at the Star Alliance, the world's largest airline group, in 2002 and 2003.
 

	"Prock-Schauer is extremely well networked and brings a lot of experience on international operations and alliances to the table,"said KG Vishwanath, Jet's ex-vice president for commercial strategy and investor relations.
 

	Prock-Schauer is, however, quick to clarify that GoAir's focus will remain domestic operations and profitability. "In whichever market you are, you must be a viable, strong player. If you spread over too many markets, you are not strong...simplicity is the key thing," he said. 
 GoAir plans to more than double the number of destinations in its network and increase daily flights and annual passenger count by about four times in the next five years, its managing director, <keyword id="145370" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Jeh-Wadia">Jeh Wadia</keyword>, had said in a recent interview. He had also said flying international is more about "glamour" than anything else. 

	Despite, or perhaps due to its limited ambitions, GoAir has remained profitable in the last few years. Prock-Schauer is keen to keep it that way through its expansion. 
 

	The Austrian has been somewhat of a scale-up expert. In his first job with Austrian Airlines, he oversaw its expansion from 20 planes to 100. During his six year-plus stint at Jet Airways, he presided over its fleet expansion from 40 planes to more than a hundred, its first international flights to Colombo and later to London, its public listing and acquisition of Air Sahara.
 

	Prock-Schauer crafted a lot of Jet's codeshare agreements with international airlines. Vishwanath recalls a time in 2005-06 when the airline added 20 planes within a span of 18 months. He, along with Jet's former executive director Saroj Datta, made sure the fleet expansion was backed by rapid network enhancement plans, adequate recruitment of crew and engineering support.
 

	Since leaving Jet in 2009, he headed restructuring programmes at British Midlands and Air Berlin. 

	He also headed two low-cost airlines — Bmibaby, a subsidiary of BMI (British Midlands) and Niki, a subsidiary of Air Berlin.
 

	"I have seen it from both sides. I know both business models," Prock-Schauer said.
 

	"While running Niki, I realised how much simpler it (the low-cost model) is and how many more opportunities you have if you are low -cost," he said. "Full-service carriers are vulnerable. Everyone goes for price and the airline which has the lowest cost base is the winner."
 
 

	Prock-Schauer agrees with Wadia that it's important to be cautious when scaling up. He has seen the perils of mindless expansion from close quarters more than once.
 

	Jet acquired Sahara in 2007. The airline came with a huge debt and has remained a loss-making unit, impacting its parent's finances.
 

	BMI, which Prock-Schauer headed between 2009 and 2012, acquired several airlines and itself changed hands twice in complex deals—to Lufthansa and International Airlines Group that owns British Airways—before it shut shop in 2012 due to growing losses and unsustainable finances.
 

	"I think organic growth is the best growth for an airline," Prock-Schauer said, admitting it's a lesson he learnt from his many years of experience.

	Prock-Schauer quit Air Berlin at the end of February 2015 and joined GoAir in end May.
 "I believe in the Indian market. You can see the <keyword id="6356076" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="80" keywordseo="indian-economy">Indian economy</keyword> is picking up," he said. 

	His predecessor, Giorgio De Roni, quit GoAir in March on health grounds. The airline's chief operating officer, Tim Jordan, too, has gone on sick leave after a couple of months in office.
 

	In Wadia's interview, he had said expats sometimes find it difficult to adjust to Indian conditions. Prock-Schauer wouldn't have that problem, having fond memories of Mumbai from his seven year stay in the city. A colleague at GoAir and Vishwanath were unanimous in counting Prock-Schauer's approachability to all employees as one of his key attributes. 
 In September 2009, when Jet faced one of its worst cabin crew and pilot strike and a fierce standoff with the management, Prock-Schauer was one of the key spokespersons for the employees, convincing chairman <keyword id="122732" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Naresh-Goyal">Naresh Goyal</keyword> to consider their point of view. He quit later that year.

Former 'Game of Thrones' actor says he heard what happens in the final season, and it will 'f--- up a lot of people'

According to the stats, for the month of November, Indian passengers took more international flights than domestic. This is for the first time in 15 months that the number of international passengers surpassed domestic ones, with international passenger traffic growing by <a href="https://www.bloombergquint.com/charts/overseas-air-travel-outpaces-domestic-traffic-first-time-in-15-months">12.8%</a> compared to previous month. On the other hand, <a href="http://dgca.nic.in/reports/Traffic-ind.htm">domestic air passenger traffic</a> rose by nearly 11% for the month compared to previous month accounting to 11.64 million, which was the lowest over the last four years. For the eleven months until November, the domestic airlines registered a year-on-year growth of 19.21%. Overall, the domestic air passenger traffic was the lowest in the fourth quarter in 2018. Airlines in India have been pushing consumer-friendly app bookings and various discounts on their domestic and international flights to attract flyers. The DGCA report also highlighted cancellations and delays pertaining to the number of passengers booking air travel in India. The state-owned national carrier Air India made maximum number of cancellations on domestic routes at 2.74% while <keyword id="2467342" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Vistara">Vistara</keyword> made the least number of cancellations at the rate of 0.15%. India’s domestic airlines recorded 786 passenger-related complaints, with Air India seeing the maximum share at 247, said the report. More Indians flew overseas than on domestic routes in November: Report

BANGALORE: A year after aviation entrepreneur G R Gopinath sold his baby — India's first low-cost airline <keyword id="96736" type="CITY" weightage="80" keywordseo="Air-Deccan">Air Deccan</keyword> — he had famously told TOI that budget air travel was all about people wanting to go where an aircraft took them. People, said Gopinath, should ask, "to where can I get a ticket for Rs 500? So wherever that place may be, people go because the aircraft is going there." 
 Unfortunately, Gopinath was much ahead of his time, said 33-year-old Mittu Chandilya, CEO of <keyword id="1583080" type="COMPANY" weightage="80" keywordseo="AirAsia-India">AirAsia India</keyword>. Almost seven years after the Air Deccan legacy, AirAsia India is living up to Gopinath's words with the launch of its maiden flight from Bangalore to Goa on Thursday. "We want to give people the option to fly even if they didn't think about it," said Chandilya. 
 
A mint fresh Airbus 320 aircraft, registered as VT-A TF, took off to Goa at 3.10pm with 186 passengers including 10 children, three infants, five first time flyers and CEO Chandilya. Around 40% of the passengers paid Rs 990 for a one-way ticket, 10% paid Rs 5 as base fare (approximately Rs 500 all inclusive), and the rest of them didn't pay more than Rs 1,900. 
 
Besides the ticket fare, all passengers paid for their check-in luggage, which costs approximately Rs 199 per suitcase up to 15kg. The airline is in discussions with the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) on whether or not passengers should pay for their check-in luggage. While the DGCA has raised objections to the charge, AirAsia India believes that 'unbundling of fares' leads to more transparent airfares. 
 
"Somebody should be able to get up one weekend and say look I got nothing to do, so let me get on a flight and go somewhere and explore a destination which is new. Cost should be almost something that people don't spend time thinking about," said Chandilya, echoing what Gopinath had said years earlier. But he was quick to point out that AirAsia India is not an Air Deccan. 
 
India's newest domestic low-cost airline has started operations on the non-trunkBangal ore-Goa route, and at a time when the tourist season of Goa is at its lowest. The airline's second flight connecting Chennai-Bangalore next week is also on a non-trunk route, given the fact that the two southern metros are exhaustively connected by bus and rail services. 
 
"Both Bangalore and Goa have some sort of synergies with us in terms of our brand, marketing, and as destinations we believe that we can build up," said Chandilya, adding that AirAsia India's average fares would be comparable to rail tickets. "Railways first class and AC class is my target," he said. 
 
Interestingly, all of AirAsia India's upcoming destinations — nine by the end of this year — will connect to Bangalore. A clear indication that the country's IT capital could well be the airline's operational hub. The erstwhile Kingfisher Airlines had planned to make Bangalore its hub, but that idea died with the airline going bust a couple of years ago. 
 
Originally Chennai was chosen to be AirAsia India's hub, but there is some rethink happening on that strategy. "If you have a sudden emergency, which airport has the capability to get you up and running fast? We felt it was Bangalore. And that's the difference between private and government run airports," he said.

There will eventually be three main operating bases for the B-21. After the first is chosen, the second and third will assessed in future analyses conducted in line with the National Environmental Policy Act.The Air Force said <a href="https://www.af.mil/News/Article-Display/Article/1797946/air-force-announces-ellsworth-afb-as-first-b-21-base/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">in March 2019</a> that Ellsworth had been picked as the preferred location for the first operational B-21 bomber and the formal B-21 training unit, with Dyess and Whiteman Air Force Base in Missouri receiving new bombers as they became available.Studying two bases doesn't necessarily mean Ellsworth has lost that status, an Air Force spokesperson said Monday."We have to do the environmental impact study at each location before we can make the final basing decision," the spokesperson said, adding that the studies take about two years. (The Air Force said in its March 2019 announcement that a final basing decision was expected in 2021.)The study of Ellsworth is underway, with studies at Dyess and a third location starting soon. Public hearings will be held, noise assessments conducted, and infrastructure examined to ensure the bases can handle the new aircraft.
