Go Fashion's GMP continues to fall, now at ₹460 per share

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Allbirds was one of the last startups to go public in 2021's IPO biltz.</li><li>Since then, investors have raised the bar for money-losing companies seeking to list.</li></ul><p>Blink and you might have missed it, but the window for privately held companies to <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/instacart-klaviyo-profitable-lead-tech-ipo-revival-2023-8">go public briefly reopened this year</a> after a nearly two-year hiatus. In September, Instacart, Arm, and Klaviyo went out in quick succession, and other candidates like <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/what-is-shein-billion-dollar-fast-fashion-company-explained-2023-7#shein-has-filed-to-go-public-aiming-for-a-90-billion-valuation-16">Chinese fast-fashion giant Shein</a>, Skims, and Reddit have readied their papers in order to follow suit.</p><p>The companies that floated initial public offerings this year had something in common: They're actually profitable.</p><p>Going public before turning profitable is a thing of the past, according to Allbirds cofounder and chief innovation officer Tim Brown. "You need to be a great company, you need to be profitable," he told Business Insider.</p><p>But that wasn't the case when <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/what-happened-to-allbirds-rise-fall-2023-4">Allbirds</a> listed.</p><div type="image" title="Allbirds" height="900" width="1200" msid="105626953" hostid="261" sizebytes="67480"></div><h2>No profits, no problem</h2><p>Allbirds was once the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.insider.com/venture-capitalists-love-allbirds-2016-8">It shoe of Silicon Valley</a>, adorning the feet of engineers, venture capitalists, and heads of government. Time Magazine dubbed its hero product — the merino wool sneakers — "the world's most comfortable shoes." The company raised heaps of capital from investors including Maveron, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/tiger-global-hedge-fund-cut-back-fundraising-2023-7">Tiger Global</a>, and Lerer Hippeau. It filed confidentially to <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/allbirds-ipo-filing-s1-analysis-2021-8">go public in the summer of 2021</a>.</p><p>Through the pandemic, a dizzying number of startups took advantage of the ripe conditions for <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/2021-shaping-up-be-record-year-for-ipos-here-are-the-biggest">going public</a>: high valuations, low interest rates, and roaring investor demand for new stocks. There were <a target="_blank" href="https://www.pwc.com/gx/en/audit-services/ipo-centre/assets/pwc-global-ipo-watch-2021.pdf">1,115 IPOs in the Americas in 2021</a>, according to PwC — by far the most for any year in this century.</p><p>Few of these companies were actually making money. In a low-rate environment, investors have a higher tolerance for companies burning lots of cash in order to grow quickly. Firms like <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/caspers-losses-valuation-and-tech-pretentions-could-hurt-its-ipo-2020-1">Casper</a>, Rent the Runway, and Peloton showed mounting losses in their S-1 filings.</p><p>Allbirds was part of this generation of money-losing companies to go public. Its prospectus to would-be investors highlighted continuing losses even as revenue increased. The direct-to-consumer brand's net loss grew from $14.5 million in 2019 to $25.9 million in 2020. For the first six months of 2021, the company's losses totaled $21.1 million.</p><div type="image" title="Allbirds on Thursday announced a disappointing earnings report." height="4160" width="5547" msid="105626954" hostid="261" sizebytes="509394"></div><p>On its opening day of trading, shares of Allbirds surged 90%, closing at $28.64 apiece, but the jubilee and Champagne didn't last. In a matter of months, companies that sell directly to consumers started to fall out of favor with investors, who were paying closer attention to profits. Allbirds' shares tumbled. Its stock has lost 96% of its value since its public market debut and is recently trading at under $1.</p><p>Like other retail brands, Allbirds is also battling rising <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/freight-recession-economy-pandemic-trucking-transportation-consumer-demand-2023-9">freight costs</a> and <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/jpmorgan-jamie-dimon-russia-ukraine-geopolitics-economy-rates-energy-prices-2023-9">impacts from the war in Ukraine</a>. The company had tried to do <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/allbirds-weird-moonshot-carbon-neutral-sock-shoe-2023-6">more and more items</a>, from wool leggings to puffer jackets, Brown said. In doing so, it neglected the original customers who fell for its walk-on-air sneakers. Customers moved on to newer, hotter kicks.</p><div type="image" title="Allbirds M0.0nshot carbon neutral shoes" height="1875" width="2500" msid="105626958" hostid="261" sizebytes="381280"></div><p>Speaking to Insider about <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/what-happened-to-allbirds-rise-fall-2023-4">the company's ongoing plan to streamline its business</a>, Brown said Allbirds focused on growth "through seven really wild years."</p><p>"The path to profitability was something that we always knew was super important and then we hit some challenges," Brown said. "And the public markets have judged us poorly and not just us, a lot of that IPO class."</p><p>And judge it has. Crunchbase News' Joanna Glasner reported in October that a selected group of the largest startup offerings of 2021, which includes Coinbase, Didi, Rivian, and Roblox, <a target="_blank" href="https://news.crunchbase.com/public/biggest-ipos-2021-current-value-didi-rivn/">have shed 60% of their value</a>.</p><p>Last week, Allbirds reported another quarter of <a target="_blank" href="https://ir.allbirds.com/news-releases/news-release-details/allbirds-reports-third-quarter-2023-financial-results">bruising earnings</a>. Sales dropped by 21% year-over-year in the third quarter as the company discounts items and discontinues others. Shares have lifted slightly, however, after Allbirds began selling its shoes on Amazon earlier this month.</p><p class="default__StyledText-sc-1pd0m4y-0 eoEeOn body-paragraph">Brown said if he could do it all again, he might have done a few things differently. The company recently relaunched a 2.0 version of the wool sneaker that made it famous.</p><p>"People love a comeback and I think they love what we stand for," said Brown, who stepped down as co-chief executive officer of Allbirds in May. "And now we just have to go execute really well."</p>

So far in November, seven firms have completed their biddings. <br /><br />Further, two public issues are opening next week — Tarsons Products and Go Fashion.<br /><br /><strong>Tarson Products looks to raise ₹1,024 crore through its public listing of shares <br /></strong><br />Indian labware company Tarsons Products will open its IPO on November 15 and closes on November 17 with a price band of ₹635-662 per share.<br /><br />The IPO consists of a fresh issue of equity shares worth ₹150 crore and an offer for sale (OFS) of 1.32 crore equity shares that will be sold by promoters and an investor.<br /><br />Promoter Sanjive Sehgal will offload up to 3.9 lakh equity shares, Rohan Sehgal will sell up to 3.1 lakh equity shares and investor Clear Vision Investment Holdings will divest up to 1.25 crore equity shares in the IPO.<br /><br />The company will utilise the proceeds from the fresh issue towards paying debt, funding a part of the capital expenditure for the new manufacturing facility at Panchla in West Bengal and general corporate purposes.<br /><br />Tarsons Products is engaged in designing, developing, manufacturing and supplying a diverse range of quality labware products used in laboratories across research organisations, academic institutes, pharmaceutical firms, diagnostics companies and hospitals. IPO craze continues as two more set to open next week

<ul><li><strong>For all the talk of a bubble in the stock market, two key ingredients are missing.</strong></li><li><strong>TS Lombard said the lack of leverage held by retail investors suggests the stock market is not in a bubble.</strong></li><li><strong>An IPO frenzy is another telltale sign of a bubble, which occurred in 2021 and 1999 but not yet in 2024, according to UBS.</strong></li></ul><p>As US stocks trade near record highs, there's <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/stock-market-crash-bubble-investor-sentiment-nvidia-ai-valuations-roberts-2024-3">growing concern on Wall Street that the stock market is in a bubble.</a></p><p>While bubbles lead to dizzying gains on the upside, they are unsustainable and ultimately <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/stock-market-crash-bear-market-not-over-fed-pivot-boockvar-2023-1">end in a swift and spectacular fashion,</a> leading to massive losses for investors who get caught up in it.</p><p>But there are two key ingredients missing from today's stock market environment, suggesting that a bubble has yet to arrive.</p><h3>Where are the IPOs?</h3><p>In 1999 and 2000, at the peak of the dot-com bubble, a combined 1,313 companies went public, raising about $170 billion in capital. And from 2020 through 2021, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/2021-shaping-up-be-record-year-for-ipos-here-are-the-biggest">more than 1,500 companies went public</a> and raised more than $500 billion in capital, according to data from Bloomberg.</p><p>That pales in comparison to today's IPO market, which has been largely dormant since the 2022 bear market. So far in 2024, just 20 companies have gone or are about to go public. </p><p>"A hallmark of the late 1990s bubble was the IPO frenzy and elevated first-day returns, which are absent today. In 2020–21, the average first-day returns were the highest since the dotcom era, but that ended once rates started to rise, and the IPO market has yet to really come back," UBS's CIO for global wealth management in the Americas, Solita Marcelli, said in a recent note.</p><p>And for the companies that have gone public, one-day returns pale in comparison to the soaring one-day returns newly public companies saw in 2020 and 2021. </p><p>Instead, investors are more focused on quality and profits than they are on speculative growth, and that's ultimately not behavior that is indicative of a bubble.</p><p>The <a href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/news/stocks/mega-cap-tech-concentration-stock-market-risks-overblown-bmo-belski-2024-2">divergence in performance between mega-cap tech companies and speculative IPO companies</a> "appears to reflect investors' willingness to pay up for high-quality companies with strong earnings potential, but not for those with more uncertain futures," Marcelli said.</p><p>Marcelli ultimately sees the stock market continuing to trend higher throughout 2024 thanks to a strong economic backdrop and tailwinds from AI, and recommends investors maintain a core allocation to US large-cap stocks.</p><h3>Where's the leverage?</h3><p>Another hallmark sign of a stock market bubble is investors taking on excess leverage to juice their returns and chase the rally higher.</p><p>But according to Global Data TS Lombard, FINRA margin debt has risen only modestly over the past few months and <a href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/news/stocks/stock-market-positive-outlook-meme-stock-mania-red-flag-bubble-2024-2">is still down about 25% from its record high reached in 2021.</a></p><p>"Margin debt and options open interest suggest that it's not speculation driving the rally," strategist Skylar Montgomery Koning said in a note on Wednesday.</p><p>Meanwhile, investors have been insulating themselves from potential losses in the stock market via put options, which is not typical of a stock market bubble.</p><p>"By the same token, the volume of US equity market call options has increased but remains well below the levels of froth seen in 2020. Moreover, the Nasdaq put volume has been relatively elevated, presumably because investors have been hedging outright long exposure," Koning said.</p>
