And Indian students too are a part of the change. According to a <a href="https://www.hindustantimes.com/delhi-news/delhi-kids-to-join-global-bunk-school-protest-against-climate-change/story-BzNBOGVuklM5xhyHvXc0fJ.html">report</a>, over 400 students from Delhi will be a part of the movement. Students will bunk schools to join their counterparts from over 40 countries and will go on strike to fight global warming. The report also says that a few schools in the National Capital have allowed students to be a part of the strike. The global movement is a part of Greta Thunberg’s strike which the 16-year-old Swedish student started in August, 2018. Now, a Nobel Peace prize nominee, Thunberg has inspired thousands of others to join her in the movement. Thunberg was also a part of the World Economic Forum where she spoke about the alarming rate of global warming <a href="https://www.indiatoday.in/education-today/gk-current-affairs/story/16-year-old-climate-warrior-greta-thunberg-nominated-for-nobel-peace-prize-1477954-2019-03-14">saying </a>she wants people to panic about climate change. The strikes have also caused a social media uproar with the hashtag #Fridaysforthefuture. Indian students join Nobel Peace Prize nominee Greta Thunberg to go on strike to fight global warming

<ul><li>Sea ice in the Arctic is melting faster than ever because of rising temperature and it may adversely affect the Indian monsoon rain pattern. </li><li>It has become difficult for new sea ice to make trans-arctic journey as only 20% of the ice could actually reach the Central Arctic. </li><li>The ice is 30% less thick than it was 15 years ago. </li></ul>The polar Arctic Zone — which has been melting from the past two centuries — has started melting dramatically because of rising temperatures that could adversely impact the India’s rain pattern and the seasonal monsoon, said a team of researchers ahead of a major expedition to explore the Arctic. The sea ice has been melting faster than ever and that could have a severe implication on major ocean currents linked to extreme weather events, said the researchers. In simple words, <keyword id="7508979" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Ocean-current">ocean current</keyword>s helps to transport sea ice from one destination to another. Given the current situation, Transpolar Drift — a major ocean current that transports sea ice from the <keyword id="3974424" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="laptev-sea">Laptev Sea</keyword> and East Siberian Sea towards Fram Strait — will suffer, leading to major consequences across the world including India. It is also one of the dominant factors in determining weather patterns across the Northern Hemisphere, said the report. It has become increasingly difficult for new sea ice to make trans-arctic journey. Till 1990s, half the sea ice formed in the Arctic sea next to Russia was able to successfully travel without melting. However now, only 20% of the ice is able to reach the Central Arctic. In fact, 80% of the newly-formed sea ice melts as it is not thick as before. The thickness of the ice is 30% less than it was 15 years ago. This could result in emission of sea ice during summer in the Arctic, said the report. Separately, another study supports these findings. A recent study by the National Centre for Antarctic and Ocean Research revealed a direct relationship between <keyword id="6366055" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="global-warming">global warming</keyword> and the monsoons. “We noticed that there has been an increase in glacial melting driven by warming over the past two centuries. The Arctic witnessed a persistently increasing warming during the studied period with a particularly accelerated tone post-1970s,” reported Hindustan Times citing study. Rapid melting sea-ice in the Arctic may hamper India’s monsoon pattern: Study

New Delhi, About 90 per cent of the Himalayan Region will experience drought lasting over a year if global warming increases by 3 degrees Celsius, according to new research. The findings, published in the journal Climatic Change, show that 80 per cent of the increased human exposure to heat stress in <keyword id="19895063" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="india" source="keywords">India</keyword> can be avoided by adhering to Paris Agreement's temperature goals of limiting global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius, compared to 3 degrees Celsius warming. The team led by researchers at the University of East Anglia (<keyword id="20773290" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="uea" source="keywords">UEA</keyword>) in the UK quantified how climate change risks to human and natural systems increase at a national scale as the level of global warming increases. A collection of eight studies -- all focusing on India, Brazil, China, Egypt, Ethiopia, and Ghana -- shows that the risks of drought, flooding, declines in crop yields, and loss of biodiversity and natural capital greatly increase for each additional degree of global warming. It found that in India pollination is reduced by half at 3-4 degrees global warming compared to a quarter reduction at 1.5 degrees. Limiting warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius allows half the country to act as a refuge for biodiversity, compared with 6 per cent at 3 degrees, the researchers said. The team found very large increases in the exposure of agricultural land to drought with 3 degrees Celsius warming - more than 50 per cent of the agricultural land in each of the countries studied is projected to be exposed to severe droughts of longer than one year over a 30-year period. However, limiting global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius would reduce the increase in exposure of agricultural land to drought by between 21 per cent (India) and 61 per cent (Ethiopia) as well as reduce economic damages due to fluvial flooding. This happens when rivers and streams break their banks and the water flows out onto the adjacent low-lying areas. Avoided increases in human exposure to severe drought are also 20-80 per cent lower at 1.5 degrees Celsius than 3 degrees Celsius across the six countries, the researchers said. Economic damages associated with sea-level rise are projected to increase in coastal nations, but more slowly if warming was limited to 1.5 degrees Celsius, they said. The researchers warned that more effort is needed to reduce global warming, as currently the policies in place globally are likely to result in 3 degrees Celsius of global warming. One paper explored the risks to plants and vertebrates due to increases in global warming, and another developed a new natural capital risk register for each of the six countries that also included the projected changes in the risk stemming from future human population changes. This combination shows that many areas in the six countries are already at high natural capital risk at 1.5 degrees Celsius when effects of increasing human population are accounted for. The findings also showed that an expansion of protected area networks is necessary in order to deliver climate resilient biodiversity conservation. "The results presented in this collection confirm the need for the implementation of climate policies aligned to the Paris Agreement limits if widespread and escalating climate change risk is to be avoided," said lead author of the paper, Professor <keyword id="20773288" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="rachel-warren" source="keywords">Rachel Warren</keyword>, from the UEA. "They provide additional confirmation of the rapid escalation of climate change risks with global warming found in the Intergovernmental Panel of Climate Change (IPCC) 2022 report, which identifies how the risk of severe consequences increases with every additional increment of global warming," <keyword id="20540591" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="warren" source="keywords">Warren</keyword> said. Although these studies focus on the risks to six countries only, other nations are projected to experience similar issues, the researchers said. Greater emphasis needs to be placed on both climate change mitigation and climate change adaptation to avoid large increases in risk to both human and natural systems, they said. "For example, a good way to combat the effects of climate change on natural systems and soak up carbon from the atmosphere is to restore ecosystems to their natural state, especially if warming can be held to 2 degrees Celsius or less. This has the additional benefit of restoring the natural capital bank in these areas," said study co-author <keyword id="20773289" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="jeff-price" source="keywords">Jeff Price</keyword>, also from the UEA. The work focuses on developing countries as they tend to be more vulnerable to climate change than others.  Spanning the continents of Asia, Africa, and South America, the case studies present examples of both large and small countries and cover a range of levels of socioeconomic development. The risks assessed are the additional risks due to anthropogenic or human-induced climate change corresponding to the elevated global warming in comparison with a baseline of levels of risk in 1961-1990, when warming was approximately 0.3 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels. Together the studies provide a harmonised assessment for the six countries of projected changes in exposure of humans and land to climate-related hazards, such as drought, water stress, fluvial and coastal flooding, and the projected effects of climate change on biodiversity, as well as the economic and societal implications of climate risks.

About 90% of Himalayas will face year-long drought at 3 degrees warming says new study

<ul><li>Earlier today, India’s Prime Minister — Narendra Modi — issued a statement reiterating India’s commitment towards the welfare of the planet observing <keyword id="6453991" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Earth-Day">Earth Day</keyword>. </li><li>While global warming in India remains within the two degree Celsius mark as per the Copenhagen agreement, it’s beyond the 1.5 degree Celsius limit set by the <keyword id="3087299" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Paris-agreement">Paris Agreement</keyword>. </li><li>Between 1998 and 2017, India saw $79.5 billion (₹5.5 trillion) in economic losses due to climate change according to the United Nations. </li></ul>On Earth Day in 2016, India — along with 173 other countries — signed the Paris Agreement at the United Nations Climate Change Conference with a promise to limit the global warming temperature increase, at most, to 1.5 degrees Celsius.  Reaching the two degree mark isn’t the worst news since it’s still compatible with the 2009 Copenhagen goal.  In April last year, India and at least 170 other countries reiterated their commitment towards climate change in London by signing an <a href="https://economictimes.indiatimes.com/industry/transportation/shipping-/-transport/shipping-industry-joins-effort-to-tackle-climate-change/articleshow/63779431.cms?from=mdr">agreement</a> that states that stakeholders must reduce carbon dioxide emissions by at least 50% from shipping by 2050, based on 2008 emission levels. India manages to <a href="https://www.germanwatch.org/en/16046">rank</a> 14th on the Global Climate Risk Index. But despite its progress, India is among the countries <a href="http://web.worldbank.org/archive/website01291/WEB/0__CO-78.HTM">most vulnerable</a> to climate change according to the World Bank. It’s no secret that India’s already facing a warming climate, witnessing a decline in monsoon rain since the 1950s. Extended droughts and incidents of unexpected heavy rainfall are also more frequent. Between 1998 and 2017, India saw $79.5 billion (₹5.5 trillion) in economic losses due to climate change <a href="https://www.unisdr.org/we/inform/publications/61119">according</a> to the United Nations. India’s been making progress but there are still reasons to worry:

In fact, looking at cyclonic storms that have hit the Bay of Bengal between 1965 to 2017, only two of 46 ‘severe’ storms occurred in April.

 The head of the Indian Meteorological Department told <a href="https://www.thehindu.com/news/national/fani-is-indias-strongest-april-cyclone-in-43-years-say-meteorologists/article26995965.ece">The Hindu</a>, “This is a cyclone that’s forming due to the warming of the Bay of Bengal basin…with global warming we have to be prepared for such occurrences and take precaution accordingly.” Cyclone Fani is shaping up to be the biggest storm to hit the Bay of Bengal since 2008 according to the <a href="https://weather.com/en-IN/india/news/news/2019-04-30-cyclone-fani-live-extremely-severe-storm-odisha-west-bengal">Weather Channel.</a> And, it’s heading towards the state of Odisha at 190 kilometers per hour. Sarat Chandra Sahu, the Director of the Center for Environment and Climate at the SOA University told <a href="https://indiaclimatedialogue.net/2018/10/17/cyclones-buffet-odisha-as-temperatures-rise/">indiaclimatedialogue</a>, “Because of global warming, sea surface temperature remains higher in the Bay of Bengal leading to generation and intensification of cyclonic systems. The southern coasts of Odisha experience cyclonic storms more frequently since Phailin cyclone of 2013.”

 Ajay Singh, a climate change researcher with the Indian Institute of Technology Bombay, agrees in his study published in <a href="https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S2212670812000437#">Science Direct</a> stating, “Overall, the impact of global warming on the climate of India is clearly visible in the form of increased frequency and intensity of most of the extreme weather events.” The Indian Ocean, in particular has been warming faster than any tropical region on the planet over the past century according to the <a href="http://www.climate.rocksea.org/research/indian-ocean-warming/">Climate Research Lab</a> in IIT Madras . And, so it ends up that the Indian Ocean is also the largest contributor to global ocean surface warming.

This initiative is popular with consumers who wish to reduce their carbon footprint. Through SBTi, companies are setting science-based emissions reduction targets - across their entire value chain - that are consistent with keeping global warming at 1.5 degree Celsius above pre-industrial levels. SBTi committed companies get 24 months to submit their targets. ATL, after committing to SBTi in Oct 2021, is one of the few companies to submit the emission reduction targets within one year. Adani Transmission to become net-zero by 2050

<ul><li>Two-thirds of the Himalayan glaciers — that constitute Mount Everest— will melt by the year 2100 if the rise in temperature continues at the same pace. </li><li>Even if governments try to control the rising temperature, it would still lead to the melting of at least one-third of Himalayan glaciers. </li><li>The Himalayan region has witnessed a surge in temperature by two degrees Fahrenheit since the 20th century. </li><li>The life of approximately two billion people is dependent on the future of these mountains. </li></ul>Global warming has put the Hindu Kush mountain range of the Himalayas — home to <keyword id="14834" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Mount-Everest">Mount Everest</keyword> — at utmost risk with most of its glacier cover expected to melt in less than eight decades, a recent report by the Nepal-based inter-governmental research organisation, International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development (ICIMOD) has warned. According to the report, <a href="https://link.springer.com/book/10.1007%2F978-3-319-92288-1">the Hindu Kush Himalaya Assessment</a>, two-thirds of the glaciers in the region will melt by the year 2100 if the temperature continues to increase at the current pace. In fact, one-third of the Himalayan glacier will melt by 2100 even if the global efforts are undertaken to meet the 2015 Paris agreement targets of limiting global temperature rise of 1.5 degrees Celsius. The Hindu Kush Himalayan region, which includes Mount Everest and K2, stretches over 2,000 miles across Asia, from Afghanistan to Myanmar. It has witnessed a surge in temperature by two degrees fahrenheit since the 20th century, noted the report. The melting of glaciers will have a direct impact on the flow of Asian rivers including the Ganges and the Indus. It could lead to increased water levels in the major rivers that could result in floods, affecting agricultural resources of billions of people in India, China, and six other countries. The life of approximately two billion people is dependent on the future of these mountains, estimates the report. A water crisis awaits Access to water is already a great concern for people living in mountains in India, the changes in global warming could also result in a water crisis. Presently, the Hindu Kush Himalayan Region is a water resource for around a third of the world’s population, according to the report. Last year, some of the residents of the Indian city of Shimla, the capital of <keyword id="6358126" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Himachal-Pradesh">Himachal Pradesh</keyword> and a famous tourist destination<a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2018/06/17/world/asia/shimla-india-drought-water.html?module=inline"> asked visitors to not to visit the hill station</a> because the water supply in the city dropped to dangerously low “<a href="http://www.niti.gov.in/writereaddata/files/document_publication/2018-05-18-Water-index-Report_vS6B.pdf">India is suffering from the worst water crisis</a> in its history and millions of lives and livelihoods are under threat”, said a government report released in 2018. Sometimes, this results in mild <keyword id="11919825" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="flooding" source="Orion">flooding</keyword> - inconvenient puddles along the sidewalk. But in certain years, like 2019, floods can swallow the city, damaging infrastructure and costing lives.More cities will need to prepare for that reality as global temperatures climb, and sea levels rise along with them. A recent report from the UN Intergovernmental Panel on <keyword id="11896311" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="climate-change" source="Orion">Climate Change</keyword> (IPCC) found that human-caused emissions have already led the planet to warm by 1.1 degrees Celsius in the last 170 years. When global temperatures rise, ice sheets and glaciers melt, sending water into the ocean. Water also naturally expands as it warms, which raises the average sea level.The IPCC report warned that <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/climate-change-impacts-to-last-millennia-ipcc-report-2021-8">sea levels will continue to rise for centuries to millennia</a>, no matter what happens next. A <a href="https://iopscience.iop.org/article/10.1088/1748-9326/ac2e6bhttps://iopscience.iop.org/article/10.1088/1748-9326/ac2e6b">new study</a> from Climate Central, a nonprofit research group, suggests that 4 degrees of warming could lead to nearly 30 feet of sea-level rise over the next 200 to 2,000 years. In that worst-case scenario, according to the researchers, the resulting flooding would force at least 50 major cities to either start emptying out or mount unprecedented defenses against the water. High tides could encroach on land hosting 15% of the global population (about 1 billion people).If the world continues on its current emissions path, global temperatures are projected to climb 3 degrees, which would cause seas to rise nearly 21 feet. In that case, more than 800 million people could be vulnerable to sea-level rise - and many the world's most important landmarks could be submerged in water.Some of that can still be avoided, though. Under the best-case scenario, global temperatures would climb just 1.5 degrees Celsius over the next 200 to 2,000 years, leading to around 10 feet of sea-level rise. But that would require major systemic changes to cut emissions, since the world is currently on track to exceed 1.5 degrees of warming in the 2030s, according to the IPCC. Plus, even under that limited amount of warming, the Climate Central researchers estimate that 510 million people would be vulnerable to sea-level rise.The graphics below show how landmarks such as the Burj Khalifa and Statue of Liberty would look under 3 degrees of warming.<h2>Rising seas pose a particular threat to Asian landmarks</h2>The Climate Central study estimates that Asian countries - particularly China, India, Indonesia, and Vietnam - are most vulnerable to sea-level rise.The Temple of Literature in Hanoi, Vietnam, wouldn't experience any flooding under 1.5 degrees of warming, but it would under 3 degrees. Floods would swallow the entrance to the Lungshan Temple in Taipei, Taiwan, if global sea levels rose nearly 21 feet.The streets below the Lujiazui skyscrapers in Shanghai would also be covered in water. The study estimates that 83% of Shanghai's population is vulnerable to flooding under 1.5 degrees of warming, and 94% is vulnerable under 3 degrees.If emissions continue on their current path, the Burj Khalifa in Dubai could wind up wading in water, too.And the Lalbagh Fort in Dhaka, Bangladesh would no longer be accessible on foot. Half of Dhaka's population is vulnerable to flooding under 1.5 degrees of warming. Under 3 degrees of warming, that figures rises to 82%.<h2>Landmarks in the US, Europe, and South America are also vulnerable</h2>In the US, coastal cities like New York are particularly vulnerable to flooding. Based on the level of warming (1.1 degrees Celsius) alone, nearly 4% of New York City's population will experience flooding over the next 200 to 2,000 years . That figure could rise to 19% under 3 degrees of warming, which would leave the base of the Statue of Liberty inundated. On the opposite coast, the Santa Monica Pier in California could disappear underwater if sea levels rose nearly 21 feet globally.The UK's Buckingham Palace could get partially swallowed. The warming we've already seen means around 5% of the UK's population will be vulnerable to flooding over the coming centuries. With 3 degrees of warming, that share would jump to 11%.If emissions continue on their current path, pedestrians would no longer be able to stroll through Aristotelous Square in Thessaloniki, Greece.Nor would they be able to enter the State Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg, Russia.Under 3 degrees of warming, water could form a moat around the Plaza de España in Seville, Spain. Nearly 4% of Spain's population is vulnerable to flooding under 1.5 degrees of warming, according to the study. That figure rises to 8% under 3 degrees of warming.A few landmarks, like the Plaza de la Catedral in Havana, Cuba, could get swallowed up entirely.But there's still time: The study estimates that cutting emissions in half by 2030 could limit warming to just 1.5 degrees. In that case, the authors write, widespread flooding "may be limited to a handful of locations."

The study's authors, Patrick Brown and Ken Caldeira, from the Carnegie Institution for <keyword id="41551" type="ENTERTAINMENT" weightage="100" keywordseo="science">Science</keyword> in California, estimate the steepest emissions scenario will lead the planet be 0.5 degrees Celsius warmer than the IPCC projections, which were the numbers used to formulate the Paris agreement. The authors also reduced the uncertainty of the IPCC's projections by a third. Scientists use climate modeling to predict future warming based on estimates of how much greenhouse gas humans spew into the atmosphere, and what its effects will be over time. But models aren't always perfect. The study's authors note that there is sometimes a discrepancy between what the models say and what scientists actually observe happening in the atmosphere. For their calculations, Brown and Caldeira analyzed the Earth's current energy budget - the absorption and re-emission of radiation from sunlight in the Earth's atmosphere - and input that data into a number of different climate models. The authors found that if humans keep pumping greenhouse gases like carbon dioxide and methane into the atmosphere unabated, the world could wind up 15% warmer than the previous high estimate. When climate models are constrained by what scientists actually observe, the authors said, they generally project more warming. The models that most accurately reflect today's climate therefore tend to be the ones that predict the most warming by the end of the century. Under <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/trump-paris-agreement-climate-change-2017-6">the Paris agreement, which was created almost exactly two years ago</a>, 195 countries set a goal to limit global warming to 2 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels by cutting emissions.
