With millions of people across five continents experiencing scorching heat last month, the European Union's (EU) climate agency, Copernicus <keyword id="19907392" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="climate-change" source="keywords">Climate Change</keyword> Service (C3S), confirmed on Monday that June was the warmest on record. It also marked the 12th consecutive month of <keyword id="20524196" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="global-temperatures" source="keywords">global temperatures</keyword> reaching <keyword id="22325521" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="1-5-degrees-Celsius" source="keywords">1.5 degrees Celsius</keyword> above the pre-industrial average. <br /><br />According to scientists at C3S, every month since June last year has been the warmest such month on record. <br /><br />In January, the world completed an entire year with the mean surface air temperature exceeding the 1.5-degree Celsius threshold. June was the 12th consecutive month with monthly average temperatures above the 1850-1900 pre-industrial average. <br /><br />At the 2015 UN climate talks in Paris, world leaders committed to limiting the global average temperature rise to 1.5 degrees Celsius above the pre-industrial period to avoid the worst impacts of climate change. However, a permanent breach of the 1.5-degree Celsius limit specified in the <keyword id="20104670" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Paris-Agreement" source="keywords">Paris Agreement</keyword> refers to long-term warming over a 20 or 30-year period. <br /><br />Earth's global surface temperature has already increased by around 1.2 degrees Celsius compared to the average in 1850-1900 due to the rapidly-increasing concentration of <keyword id="20649149" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="greenhouse-gases" source="keywords">greenhouse gases</keyword> -- primarily carbon dioxide and methane -- in the atmosphere. This warming is considered to be the reason behind record droughts, wildfires and floods worldwide. <br /><br />According to new data, June 2024 was the warmest on record, with an average surface air temperature of 16.66 degrees Celsius, 0.67 degrees Celsius above the 1991-2020 average for the month and 0.14 degrees Celsius above the previous high set in June 2023. <br /><br />"The month was 1.5 degrees Celsius above the estimated June average for 1850-1900, the designated pre-industrial reference period, making it the 12th consecutive month to reach or break the 1.5-degree threshold," C3S said in a statement. <br /><br />It was also the 13th consecutive month of <keyword id="21477127" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="record-high-temperatures" source="keywords">record-high temperatures</keyword>, a result of the combined effect of the 2023-24 El Nino event and human-caused climate change. While unusual, a similar streak of monthly global temperature records happened previously in 2015-16. <br /><br />"This is more than a statistical oddity and highlights a large and continuing shift in our climate. Even if this specific streak of extremes ends at some point, we are bound to see new records being broken as the climate continues to warm. This is inevitable, unless we stop adding greenhouse gases into the atmosphere and the oceans," said Carlo Buontempo, the director of C3S. <br /><br />The European climate agency said the global average temperature for the last 12 months (July 2023-June 2024) is the highest on record, at 0.76 degrees Celsius above the 1991-2020 average and 1.64 degrees Celsius above the 1850-1900 pre-industrial average. <br /><br />The world's sea surface in June was also the highest ever recorded for the month. <br /><br />Several countries experienced record-breaking heat and devastating floods and storms in June. <br /><br />According to an analysis by Climate Central, an independent group of scientists and communicators based in the United States, more than 60 per cent of the world population faced extreme heat that was made at least three times more likely by climate change during June 16-24. <br /><br />Climate Central said the blistering heat in June impacted 619 million (61.9 crore) people in India, 579 million (57.9 crore) in China, 231 million (23.1 crore) in Indonesia, 206 million (20.6 crore) in Nigeria, 176 million (17.6 crore) in Brazil, 171 million (17.1 crore) in Bangladesh, 165 million (16.5 crore) in the US, 152 million (15.2 crore) in Europe, 123 million (12.3 crore) in Mexico, 121 million (12.1 crore) in Ethiopia and 103 million (10.3 crore) in Egypt. <br /><br />According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), northwest India recorded its warmest June since 1901. <br /><br />India, which experienced one of its hottest and longest heatwaves, recorded more than 40,000 suspected heatstroke cases and over 100 heat-related deaths. The intense heat overwhelmed the water supply system and power grids, with Delhi grappling with a severe water crisis. <br /><br />According to the IMD, 11 states recorded 20 to 38 heatwave days -- up to four times the usual number of such days -- during the April-to-June period. June warmest on record; every month since July 2023 breached 1.5 deg C threshold

The temperature is also rising faster than we've ever seen. </p>
<p>By 2100, the Earth will be warmer than any time during this period no matter what we do, they project.</p>
<p>"We already knew that on a global scale, Earth is warmer today than it was over much of the past 2,000 years," study researcher Shaun Marcott of Oregon State <a href="http://www.eurekalert.org/emb_releases/2013-03/osu-roe030413.php">said in a statement</a>. "Now we know that it is warmer than most of the past 11,300 years. This is of particular interest because the Holocene spans the entire period of human civilization."</p>
<p>The study was published <a href="http://www.sciencemag.org/lookup/doi/10.1126/science.1228026">Friday, March 8 in the journal Science</a>. The researchers used data from 73 global sites to reconstruct Earth's temperatures back to the end of the last Ice Age. Their data came from the chemical and physical characteristics of fossils from ocean sediment cores and terrestrial archives.</p>
<p>During the last 5,000 years, the Earth as a whole cooled about 1.3 degrees Fahrenheit – until the past 100 years, when it warmed about 1.3 degrees. The largest changes were in the northern hemisphere, where there are more land masses and greater human populations.</p>
<p>"The last century stands out as the anomaly in this record of global temperatures since the end of the last ice age," said Candace Major, program director in the National Science Foundation's Division of Ocean Sciences.</p>
<p>Predictions indicate this trend will continue, with the Earth warming between two and up to 11.5 degrees by 2100. <p>The news aggregation website, run by Matt Drudge, is known to be conservative and aligned with the sort of people who are skeptical of man-made global warming. </p>
<p>This morning Drudge tweeted links to <a href="http://hosted.ap.org/dynamic/stories/U/US_SCI_CLIMATE_TEMPERATURE_SPIKE?SITE=AP&amp;SECTION=HOME&amp;TEMPLATE=DEFAULT&amp;CTIME=2013-03-08-08-36-59">AP</a><span> and </span><a href="http://www.nytimes.com/2013/03/08/science/earth/global-temperatures-highest-in-4000-years-study-says.html?ref=global-home&amp;_r=2&amp;">New York Times</a> articles about the study, which presents strong evidence of non-natural global warming.</p>

Even Drudge Is Tweeting About Global Warming As Temperatures Soar

<keyword id="6361617" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="climate-change" source="Orion">Climate change</keyword> may take six months off the average human lifespan, according to a study which found that women and individuals in developing nations are disproportionately affected. The study, published recently in the journal PLOS Climate, evaluated average temperature, rainfall, and <keyword id="14078" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="life-expectancy" source="Orion">life expectancy</keyword> data from 191 countries from 1940-2020. <br /><br /> In addition to measuring the isolated impacts of temperature and rainfall, the researchers designed a first-of-its-kind composite climate change index, which combines the two variables to gauge the overarching severity of climate change. <br /><br /> Results indicate that in isolation, a <keyword id="1109109" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="global-temperature" source="Orion">global temperature</keyword> increase of 1 degree Celsius is associated with an average human life expectancy decrease of approximately 0.44 years, or about six months and one week. <br /><br /> A 10-point increase in the composite climate change index-which accounts for both temperature and rainfall-is expected to decrease the average life expectancy by six months, the researchers said. <br /><br /> Women and individuals in developing nations are disproportionately affected, they said. <br /><br /> "The global threat posed by climate change to the well-being of billions underscores the urgent need to address it as a public health crisis, as revealed by this study," said Amit Roy from Shahjalal University of Science and Technology in Bangladesh and The New School for Social Research, U.S. <br /><br /> The study emphasises that "mitigation efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and proactive initiatives are essential to safeguard life expectancy and protect the health of populations worldwide," Roy added. <br /><br /> Temperature and rainfall-two telltale signals of climate change-cause myriad public health concerns, from the acute and direct (e.g., natural disasters like flooding and heat waves) to the indirect yet equally devastating (e.g., respiratory and mental illnesses), the researchers said. <br /><br /> While impacts like these are observable and well documented, existing research has not established a direct link between climate change and life expectancy, they said. <br /><br /> The team is hopeful that the composite climate change index will standardise the global conversation about climate change, become a usable metric for the nonscientific public and encourage collaboration and even friendly competition among countries to combat the impacts of climate change. <br /><br /> Mitigating greenhouse gas emissions and adapting to a changing environment are of particular importance, the researchers said. <br /><br /> To complement this large-scale approach, they suggest localised future studies that consider specific severe weather events (e.g., wildfires, tsunamis, and floods), the impacts of which cannot be fully captured through analysing temperature and rainfall alone.

That's because rising global temperatures are creating these thermokarst lakes as well as the perfect storm for our changing climate.</p><p><em>Following is a transcript of the video.</em></p><p>If you stab this frozen lake in the right place you can light it on fire. But it's not the water that's flammable, it's actually what's bubbling up from the lake floor. These aren't your average lakes. They're called thermokarst lakes and they're filled with highly flammable methane gas.</p><p>During the summer the gas bubbles to the surface and enters the atmosphere. But in the winter the bubbles get trapped under the ice. So when you stab the frozen surface, it releases pockets of the gas that you can then light up. It may look like a fun party trick but there's more to this effect than meets the eye. Methane isn't just highly flammable, it's also a potent greenhouse gas. 25 times more efficient at trapping heat than carbon dioxide. And these methane-filled lakes are popping up everywhere in Alaska and Siberia. In 2017 alone 200, new thermokarst lakes were photographed in Siberia. So where are they all coming from?</p><p>They're actually remnants from the last Ice Age. Around 11,000 years ago these areas used to be frozen soil and ice. We call these frozen underground layers today, permafrost. But it's not permafrost that's the problem, it's rising global temperatures which is causing the permafrost to thaw for the first time in thousands of years. Since the 1980s, permafrost in Alaska has warmed by one and a half degrees Celsius. Almost twice as much compared to how much it warmed between 1880 and 1980. And when permafrost thaws, it weakens the ground above it which can destroy roads, damage building foundations, and even split a tree in two. In the process, it releases a buffet of long-dead plants and animals on the lake floor. And that's where the real trouble starts.</p><p>Tiny microbes called mathanogens eat the dead matter and produce, you guessed it, methane. And the more lakes that form means more ancient food for microbes and ultimately more methane that reaches the atmosphere. Overall, thermokarst lakes are estimated to emit 3.8 teragrams of methane each year. Increasing annual methane emissions by up to 63%. And what if all of Earth's permafrost thawed?</p><p>Researchers estimate it will release at least 100 teragrams of methane into the atmosphere, potentially warming the planet enough to cause sea levels to rise anywhere from three to 10 centimeters. For comparison, sea levels have risen just 7.6 millimeters on average over the last 15 years. Contributing to 1.8 billion dollars in annual damage off the coast of New Jersey alone. But right now little is being done to slow the formation of thermokarst lakes around the globe. And if you burn the methane as it bubbles to the surface, it can reduce the greenhouse effect but only slightly.</p><p>Since lighting it on fire turns it into carbon dioxide and water vapor, two other potent greenhouse gasses. In the end, it's up to us to reduce our own emissions. Because lighting lakes on fire isn't going to be enough.</p>

Rising global temperatures are creating bubbling, methane lakes you can light on fire

(It is well worth clicking through to the full page if you want to see all the charts.) To his credit, <a href="http://wattsupwiththat.com/2015/12/14/november-2015-global-surface-landocean-and-lower-troposphere-temperature-anomaly-model-data-difference-update/">WUWT's November update</a> republishes the same data from NASA.  But despite all those upward-pointing lines, it won't admit that global warming is happening. </p><p>WUWT has (at least) three criticisms against the data:</p><p>1. "<a href="http://wattsupwiththat.com/2015/12/14/november-2015-global-surface-landocean-and-lower-troposphere-temperature-anomaly-model-data-difference-update/">It is easy to have record high global temperatures in the midst of a hiatus or slowdown in global warming</a>." Even if you accept that argument, it's still based on the premise that temperatures are going up.</p><p>2. The observed data is turning out to be different from the predictive models. <a href="http://wattsupwiththat.com/2015/12/14/november-2015-global-surface-landocean-and-lower-troposphere-temperature-anomaly-model-data-difference-update/">WUWT shows this chart</a> to illustrate the difference between the incoming data and the models. Sure, the lines diverge. Global temperature changes should be shown in absolute temperatures rather than high or low anomalies, which NASA GISS uses. WUWT has an interesting discussion about <a href="https://bobtisdale.wordpress.com/2014/01/25/why-arent-global-surface-temperature-data-produced-in-absolute-form/">why the data is presented using only anomalies</a>, and again, to its credit, the site admits that because geographies range over different altitudes, and because many areas have lousy measurement stations (ie the Sahara), if you want to detect changes and differences in temperature you need to take averages of the anomalies. The site also does us a huge service by recalculating the anomaly data into absolute temperatures. And guess, what? <ul class="summary-list"><li>Half of plant and animal species could be threatened if global temperatures rise 4 degrees Celsius.</li><li>A new climate report warns of mass <keyword id="13293387" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="extinctions" source="Orion">extinctions</keyword> of <keyword id="11897851" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="animals" source="Orion">animals</keyword>, including <keyword id="13132073" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="polar-bears" source="Orion">polar bears</keyword> and penguins.</li></ul><p>Hundreds of species have been wiped out by extreme heat or warming oceans, but few global animal extinctions have been directly linked to <keyword id="11896311" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="climate-change" source="Orion">climate change</keyword>.</p><p>In 2009, a combination of sea-level rise and storm surge in the Great Barrier Reef led to the disappearance of the Bramble Cay mosaic-tailed rat. Seven years later, the species became <a href="https://blogs.scientificamerican.com/extinction-countdown/climate-change-claims-its-first-mammal-extinction/">the first mammal to go extinct due to human-induced climate change</a>.</p><p>The world can expect many more climate-related extinctions in coming decades if global temperatures continue to rise. That's according to <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/climate-change-alter-human-life-un-ipcc-report-2022-2">a report</a> released Monday by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, a <keyword id="11893452" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="un" source="Orion">UN</keyword> body that summarizes years of research on the climate crisis.</p><p>If global temperatures reach 4 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels — a scenario that assumes very high levels of greenhouse gas emissions — half of our plant and animal species could be threatened, according to the report. At that level of warming, the world could see mass mortalities and extinctions that permanently alter rainforests, kelp forests, and tropical coral reefs.</p><p>Even if global temperatures reach 1.5 degrees Celsius, the report found, up to 14% of land species could face high risk of extinction. Human-caused emissions have already led the planet to warm by 1.1 degrees Celsius in the last 170 years, last year's portion of the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/still-time-to-address-climate-change-ipcc-scientists-report-2021-8">IPCC report</a> found.</p><p>Under 2 degrees of warming, up 18% of land species could be at high risk of extinction. That risk rises to up to 29% under 3 degrees of warming, up to 39% at 4 degrees, and up to 48% at 5 degrees.</p><div type="image" title="endangered frog" height="1600" width="2400" msid="89951597" hostid="261"></div><p>Invertebrate species face one of the highest risks of extinction from mid-levels of warming (3.2 degrees Celsius), according to the report. Under this scenario, 15% of invertebrates — including 24% of salamanders and 11% of amphibians — could go extinct.</p><p>No matter what happens to global temperatures, the report said, the extinction of species is an irreversible impact of climate change.</p><h2>Arctic penguins, seals, and polar bears are at risk of extinction</h2><div type="image" title="polar bear arctic" height="1728" width="2432" msid="89951600" hostid="261"></div><p>Species in cold areas, including high mountains or polar regions, face a particularly high extinction risk.</p><p>Arctic animals such as penguins, seals, and polar bears would be seriously threatened by 2 degrees of warming or less, according to the report. The animals have evolved to live on sea ice, which is rapidly retreating due to rising temperatures. The report predicts that sea ice will completely disappear in summertime within the next century.</p><p>That means some Arctic animals could go extinct in coming decades, unless they're moved to new locations.</p><p>But relocating animals to foreign habitats is tricky: For instance, moving polar bears to Antarctica could lead them to prey on local penguin populations there. In some cases, animal species may need to be moved to zoos to keep them from dying out.</p><p>Tropical areas face their own threats, such as heatwaves destroying coral reefs and mangroves. Up to 90% of tropical coral reefs could be lost by mid-century under 1.5 degrees of warming, the report found, while the reefs could go entirely extinct under 2 degrees of warming.</p><h2>Animal extinctions could threaten human health, too</h2><div type="image" title="fish market Seychelles" height="3360" width="5040" msid="89951602" hostid="261"></div><p>In some cases, the extinction of animal species can topple entire ecosystems.</p><p>Ecosystems <a href="https://ec.europa.eu/environment/nature/biodiversity/intro/index_en.htm">depend on biodiversity</a> — a variety of plants, animals, and other organisms — to protect them from pollution, <keyword id="12019615" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="extreme-weather" source="Orion">extreme weather</keyword>, and temperature shifts. But if one species dies out, it makes it harder for others to survive. Loss of biodiversity can, in turn, lead to crop failure and water scarcity, according to the report.</p><p>Just a half-degree of additional warming could mean the difference between whether a species stays alive or not.</p><p>The <keyword id="6941656" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="ipcc" source="Orion">IPCC</keyword> authors found that the extinction risk for local species in biodiversity hotspots could double between 1.5 degrees and 2 degrees of warming, and increase at least 10-fold from 1.5 degrees to 3 degrees.</p><p>The death of animal species has consequences for humans, too.</p><p>More than 400 million people in Africa and Asia depend on fisheries for protein. Even if warming doesn't exceed 1.6 degrees, fisheries in Africa's tropical regions could lose up to 41% of their yield by the end of the century due to the extinction of local marine fish.</p><p>Commonly consumed fish like sardines and herring could also face extinction as oceans warm. </p><p>"This matters for human well-being as well," David Dodman, a lead author of the report and director of human settlements at the International Institute for Environment and Development, told Insider.</p><p>"So many people around the world still rely on very close interactions with natural ecosystems to provide them with food and to provide them with livelihoods."</p>

UN report warns of climate-related mass extinctions, including the disappearance of penguins and polar bears

<p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table full"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div>Collectively, the past six months have been the hottest since humans started keeping track of global temperatures.</p>
<p>Last month was the warmest September humans have recorded, according to both NASA's <a href="http://data.giss.nasa.gov/gistemp/tabledata_v3/GLB.Ts+dSST.txt">Global Land-Ocean Temperature Index</a> and the <a href="http://www.ncdc.noaa.gov/sotc/global/2014/9">National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's National Climatic Data Center</a>.</p>
<p>September came at the end of a record-breaking six months: April, May, June, and August of this year were all also the warmest on record, and July came in at fourth hottest.</p>
<p>According to <a href="http://www.slate.com/blogs/future_tense/2014/10/13/nasa_earth_just_experienced_the_warmest_six_month_stretch_ever.html">Eric Holthaus at Slate</a>:</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;">Recent research shows the current warm stretch is probably the planet's warmest in <a href="http://www.nytimes.com/2013/03/08/science/earth/global-temperatures-highest-in-4000-years-study-says.html?_r=1&amp;" target="_blank">at least 4,000 years</a>. That means global temperatures <a href="http://qz.com/154196/the-only-way-to-stop-climate-change-now-may-be-revolution/" target="_blank">may have already passed</a> a level that human civilization has never experienced. The sheer size and depth of the world's oceans means that <a href="http://news.discovery.com/earth/global-warming/ocean-warming-may-be-drastically-underestimated-141007.htm" target="_blank">most of global warming's extra heat has been stored there</a>. For the last decade or so, atmospheric warming <a href="http://www.slate.com/blogs/bad_astronomy/2013/12/16/global_warming_new_study_shows_pause_doesn_t_exist.html">has been playing catch up</a>.</p>
<p>That means things will just keep getting warmer - and humans are doing a poor job of slowing things down. At the <a href="http://unfccc.int/resource/docs/2009/cop15/eng/l07.pdf">2009 UN Framework Convention on Climate Change</a>, world leaders agreed to take measures to keep global temperatures from rising more than 2 degrees Celsius (3.6 degrees Fahrenheit) above their historical levels.</p>
<p>Beyond that point, many experts agree that the world could see a disastrous series of climate change effects, including widespread floods, fires, storms, famines, and extinctions. Unfortunately, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/when-will-climate-change-be-out-of-control-2014-9">recent reports</a> suggest that we're on track to miss our target by a good 2 C before the end of the century.</p>
<p><a href="http://data.giss.nasa.gov/cgi-bin/gistemp/nmaps.cgi?sat=4&amp;sst=3&amp;type=anoms&amp;mean_gen=09&amp;year1=2014&amp;year2=2014&amp;base1=1951&amp;base2=1980&amp;radius=1200&amp;pol=rob">NASA's map</a> below shows the difference in temperature between September 2014 and the average temperature from 1951 and 1980.</p>
<p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table full"><div><div class="image"></div><p></p></div></div>You can see that the heat is affecting some parts of the world more strongly than others. Some areas are even "abnormally cold." Temperatures can fluctuate around the world, depending on weather patterns - for instance, in August, parts of the US saw temperatures below the baseline average, and in September the entire country was at or above the baseline. But the important takeaway is that there is a general pattern of warming temperatures across the globe.</p>
<p>The differences becoming greater as the colors move from yellow to orange to red. Some of the greatest temperature differences were seen in the Arctic and Antarctic regions.</p>
<p>The NOAA chart below shows temperature anomalies between the April-to-September months and the 20th century average every year since 1880. You can see below that 2014 deviates most from the average, and is a part of a much bigger trend of increasing temperature anomalies.</p>
<p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table full"><div><div class="image"></div><p></p></div></div>September was also noteworthy for the flurry of climate change activism it saw around the world, including the <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/images-of-peoples-climate-march-nyc-2014-9">People's Climate March</a> in New York City, which spawned similar demonstrations around the world and at the UN 2014 Climate Summit, during which world leaders gathered to discuss their strategies for reducing carbon emissions and slowing down climate change.</p>
<p>September was also marked by a spree of climate-related events, including widespread drought in the western US and intense flooding in India.</p>

These Last 6 Months Were The Warmest Humans Have Ever Recorded On Earth

<p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>AP</span></p><p class="caption">Our summers are getting hotter.</p></div><p></p></div></div>It's not all in your head; July was insanely hot.</p><p>In fact, according to a <a href="http://www.ncdc.noaa.gov/sotc/summary-info/global/201507">new report</a> by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, <strong>it was the hottest month since 1880 - the year we started keeping records of global temperatures.</strong></p><p>July is usually the warmest month of the year, but this thing called climate change is <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/climate-change-connected-to-australian-heat-waves-2014-9">exacerbating heat waves</a>.</p><p>The report, released this month, shows that all of the globe's surfaces - our oceans, mountains, deserts, and plains - had an average temperature of 62 degrees Fahrenheit in July. This bests the last record, set in July 1998, and is about 2% warmer than the average global temperature for the entire 20th century.</p><p>Land surface temperatures this July were 1.73 deg F above the 20th-century average; Earth's oceans were 1.35 F above-average. Unsurprisingly, July 2015 was also the highest sea-surface temperature ever recorded for any month in the past 135 years.</p><p>The graphic below helps put these details into perspective. Quite a few regions across the globe experienced record-breaking temperatures in July, while most of the planet saw higher-than-normal temperatures.<div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span><a href="http://www.ncdc.noaa.gov/sotc/service/global/map-percentile-mntp/201507.gif">NOAA</a></span></p><p class="caption">Many regions across the globe were warmer than normal this July.</p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>As super-hot summers become the new normal, scientists are trying to parse how that heat affects us.</p><p><a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/places-with-big-temperature-swings-linked-to-higher-death-rates-2015-7?_ga=1.193811565.1138064181.1438091747">New research</a> published (coincidentally) in July 2015 showed elderly Americans are more likely to die if they live in regions with higher-than-average temperatures; in fact, for every 1.8-degree-Fahrenheit rise in average summer temperature, the annual death rate was 1% higher than normal.</p><p>The ill effects of this summer's steamy weather weren't limited to humans. A <a href="http://www.techinsider.io/climate-change-could-make-1-out-of-every-6-species-extinct-2015-4">study published in May 2015</a> found that <strong>climate change could cause 1 out of every 6 animal species to go extinct. Other research suggests hotter summers could bring an end of some of <a href="http://www.techinsider.io/climate-change-might-make-your-favorite-wine-disappear-2015-7">your favorite wines</a>.</strong> Rising sea temperatures and extreme weather patterns are even driving up the <a href="http://www.techinsider.io/lobster-prices-remain-high-2015-7">costs of lobster</a>, among other seafood delicacies.</p><p>These measurements fall on the heels of Obama's initiative to <a href="http://www.techinsider.io/obama-carbon-emission-cuts-5-reasons-improve-your-life-2015-8">cut greenhouse gas emissions</a> - the biggest contributors to climate change.</p><p>But those measures could take decades to merely begin to even out global temperatures. We just survived the hottest month in recorded history

A deadly heat wave gripped large regions of Asia for weeks in April and May 2024. As temperatures climbed past 110 degrees Fahrenheit (43.3 Celsius) in India on May 7, campaigning politicians, local news announcers and voters waiting in long lines passed out from the oppressive heat.  From as far north as Japan to as far south as the Philippines, the relentless heat wreaked havoc on everyday life. Students and teachers in Cambodia were sent home from school, as their hand-held fans provided little protection against the stifling heat and humidity in their poorly ventilated classrooms. <br /><br /> Farmers in Thailand saw their crops wither and mourned the loss of livestock that perished under the punishing sun. Hundreds of people died from the heat. <br /><br /> Most of the planet has suffered the dire effects of <keyword id="20563038" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="extreme-heat" source="keywords">extreme heat</keyword> in recent years. <br /><br /> A weekslong heat wave in the southwestern United States in 2023 was described as "hell on earth" in Phoenix, where temperatures hit 110 F (43.3 C) or higher for 31 straight days. <br /><br /> At the same time, Europe saw unprecedented high temperatures that killed hundreds and contributed to devastating wildfires in Greece. <br /><br /> Regardless of where or when a heat wave strikes, one pattern is a constant: Older adults are the most likely to die from extreme heat, and this crisis will worsen in the coming years. <br /><br /> We study <keyword id="19907392" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="climate-change" source="keywords">climate change</keyword> and population aging. Our research documents two global trends that together portend a dire future. <br /><br /> More older adults will be at risk of heat stress <br /><br /> First, temperatures are hotter than ever. The nine-year period from 2015 and 2023 had the highest average temperatures since global records began in 1880. <br /><br /> Second, the population is aging worldwide. By 2050, the number of people ages 60 and older will double to nearly 2.1 billion, making up 21 per cent of the <keyword id="21055680" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="global-population" source="keywords">global population</keyword>. That proportion is 13 per cent today. <br /><br /> These combined forces mean that ever-rising numbers of vulnerable older adults will be exposed to intensifying heat. <br /><br /> To understand the risks ahead, we developed population projections for different age groups and combined them with climate change scenarios for the coming decades. Our analyses show that by 2050, more than 23 per cent of the world population ages 69 and older will be living in regions where peak temperatures routinely surpass 99.5 degrees F (37.5 degrees C), compared with just 14 per cent today. <br /><br /> That means that as many as 250 million additional older adults will be exposed to dangerously high temperatures. <br /><br /> Mapping the data shows that most of these older adults live in lower- and middle-income countries with insufficient services and limited access to electricity, cooling appliances and safe water. <br /><br /> In historically cooler regions in the Global North, including North America and Europe, <keyword id="20707229" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="rising-temperatures" source="keywords">rising temperatures</keyword> will be the main force driving older adults' heat exposure. In historically hotter regions in the Global South such as Asia, Africa and South America, population growth and increases in longevity mean that steeply rising numbers of older adults will be exposed to intensifying heat-related risks. <br /><br /> Policymakers, communities, families and older residents themselves need to understand these risks and be prepared because of older adults' special vulnerabilities to heat. <br /><br /> Extreme heat is especially harmful to older adults <br /><br /> High temperatures are oppressive for everyone, but for older adults they can be deadly. <br /><br /> Extreme heat worsens common age-related health conditions such as heart, lung and kidney disease and can cause delirium. Older people don't sweat as much as younger people, which makes it harder for their bodies to cool down when temperatures spike. These problems are intensified by common prescription medications, such as anticholinergics, which further reduce the capacity to sweat. <br /><br /> Spending time outdoors in hot humid weather can cause dehydration, a problem worsened by the side effects of prescription medications such as diuretics and beta-blockers. Dehydration can make older adults weak and dizzy, increasing their risk of falls and injury. <br /><br /> These threats are even worse in regions lacking access to safe and affordable drinking water. <br /><br /> Poor air quality makes it difficult to breath, especially for those who already have lung problems such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, or COPD. <br /><br /> For older adults with physical health problems, temperatures as low as 80 F (26.7 C) can pose significant danger. And when humidity is as high as 90 per cent, even 78 F (25.6 C) can be hazardous to older adults. <br /><br /> Nighttime heat is especially harmful for older adults whose homes lack air conditioning or who can't afford to run their air conditioners for long periods. <br /><br /> The ideal temperature for older adults' restful sleep is between 68 and 77 F (20 and 25 C), and sleep quality diminishes as temperatures rise. A night of restless sleep can make an older adult more depressed and confused during their waking hours. <br /><br /> Medications also can lose their effectiveness if stored in places much warmer than 77 F (25 C). <br /><br /> Older adults also may suffer emotionally during stifling <keyword id="20472420" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="heat-waves" source="keywords">heat waves</keyword> <br /><br /> Being stuck indoors when temperatures are unbearable can make older adults bored, depressed and isolated. People with cognitive impairments may underestimate the dangers of extreme heat or may not understand the heat advisories. <br /><br /> Those who have physical mobility limitations or lack access to transportation can't easily travel to public cooling centers - if there is one nearby - or find relief in nearby "green and blue areas," such as parks and lakes. <br /><br /> These threats are especially dire in low- and middle-income nations, where older adults are more likely to live in substandard housing and lack access to high-quality health care or ways to cool down in the heat. <br /><br /> We talk about this as "systemic cooling poverty." <br /><br /> What can be done? <br /><br /> Policymakers can work to cut greenhouse gas emissions from fossil fuels in vehicles, power plants and factories, which drive global warming, and develop effective plans to protect older people from heat risk. Older adults and their caregivers also can take steps to adapt. <br /><br /> But efforts to help need to be tailored to each region and population. <br /><br /> Wealthy municipalities can increase public investments in early warning systems and ride services to cooling centers and hospitals. They can use geographic information systems to identify neighborhoods with high concentrations of older adults and expand power grids to manage increasing demand for air conditioning. <br /><br /> In regions with substandard housing, limited access to clean water and few public supports such as cooling centers, much larger changes are necessary.
