Despite climbing 35 notches in the Global Innovation Index, from 81 in 2015-16 to 46 in 2021, India lags in the number of patents granted which is still a fraction compared to leading world economies, the <keyword id="6354872" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="economic-survey" source="Orion">Economic Survey</keyword> 2021-22 said. Most of India's startups are in the IT/knowledge-based sector and intellectual property, specifically patents, are key to this knowledge-based economy. India's ranking in Global Innovation Index has climbed 35 ranks which is a "remarkable progress, but the number of patents granted in India is still a fraction compared to patents granted in China, the US, Japan and Korea", according to the Survey, tabled in the Parliament on Monday. The number of patents filed in India has gone up from 39,400 in 2010-11 to 45,444 in 2016-17 to 58,502 in 2020-21 and the patents granted in India has gone up from 7,509 to 9,847 to 28,391 during the same time period. However, according to the World Intellectual Property Organisation (WIPO), the number of patents granted in China, the US, Japan and Korea stood at 5.30 lakh, 3.52 lakh, 1.79 lakh and 1.35 lakh, respectively, for 2020, the Economic Survey said. One of the key reasons for relatively low patents in India vis a vis the US, China, etc is the low expenditure on research and development (R&amp;D) activities, which was 0.7 per cent of its GDP in 2020, lamented the Survey Document. "However, this is not the only reason. The procedural delays and complexity is another cause for low patents in India. The average pendency for final decision in acquiring patents in India is 42 months as of 2020," the Survey noted. This is much higher than 20.8, 20, 15.8 and 15 months respectively for the US, China, Korea, and Japan. However, the average pendency for final decision in acquiring patents has reduced in India from 64 months in 2017 to 52 months in 2019 and further to 42 months in 2020. Secondly, delay in India's patent application is also due to the low number of patent examiners in India, said the Survey. The number of patent examiners in India in 2020 were 615 as opposed to 13,704 in China, 8,132 in the US, and 1,666 in Japan. "This leads to a huge delay in receiving the First Examination Report (FER) delaying the whole process. This was also noted by the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Commerce's Review of Intellectual Property Rights Regime in India (2021)," said the Survey, adding that there is an urgent need to increase the number of patent examiners. Amazon.co.uk determines customers' interests by examining the items they've purchased, items they've told Amazon they own, and items they've rated. The storage of items in a randomised order at fulfilment centres to maximise the chance of multiple items on the same order being near each other. The fulfilment centre management system knows the location of every item and is able to work out the shortest travel distance to pick the orders.
The SLAM (Scan, Label, Apply, Manifest)
At the end of the packing process, packages move along conveyor belts to the SLAM where the package is weighed to ensure it is the anticipated weight (and that therefore the right items are inside). The SLAM also scans the barcode on the package and prints and adds an address label to the package.
This ensures customer confidentiality, as this is the first time that a customer's address is matched up with their package. The whole process takes less than 1 second per package.

The Requesters are able to post tasks such as choosing the best among several photographs of a store-front, writing product descriptions, or identifying performers on music CDs. Workers (called Providers in Mechanical Turk's Terms of Service, or, more colloquially, Turkers) can then browse among existing tasks and complete them for a monetary payment set by the Requester.

The Innovations That Took Amazon From Online Bookseller To Dominant Global Marketplace

​The growing proficiency of Indian technology companies in building innovative products is drawing a great deal of attention from global corporations eager to acquire fresh ideas and skilled workers. 
 
Applications that help ease online payments, offer security for data stored on multiple devices as well as those that help drive greater advertising revenue on mobile devices are some of the technologies on the shopping list of multinationals scouting for the right startup. In the next five years, experts say at least 40 technology ventures in India could be bought over by large corporations. 
 “Couple of them (startups) will be valued at over $1 billion (Rs 6,200 crore),” said Ravi Gururaj, an angel investor who heads the software product council at industry lobby <keyword id="6372077" type="CITY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Nasscom">Nasscom</keyword>. He expects about half a dozen technology ventures to be valued at around $500 million (Rs 3,100 crore) while <keyword id="818790" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="40" keywordseo="the-rest">the rest</keyword> will likely fetch a price of between $15 million (Rs 93 crore) and $50 million (Rs 311 crore). 
 A handful of such acquisitions has already set the ball rolling. Last November, Japanese engineering and electronics maker <keyword id="69870" type="CITY" weightage="40" keywordseo="Hitachi">Hitachi</keyword> acquired Prizm Payment Services, in a deal estimated at $250 million (Rs 1,547 crore). In mid 2013, South African media conglomerate Naspers bought online bus ticketing firm red-Bus for about $100 million (Rs 618 crore), giving it access to not only the large <keyword id="47445" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="40" keywordseo="Indian-market">Indian market</keyword> but disruptive technology as well. 
 “Multinational companies primarily look for talent and <keyword id="388837" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="40" keywordseo="intellectual-property">intellectual property</keyword> that can compete at global level,” said Prashant Gupta, group manager at Microsoft India (R&amp;D). “There are early signs in India that such companies are emerging that can meet these demands, especially in cloud-driven application lifecycle and big data,” he said. 
 
The global software maker runs an accelerator programme in India for technology startups that has graduated 22 ventures so far and is poised to make its first venture investment this year. 
 Interest from <keyword id="6355311" type="COUNTRY" weightage="40" keywordseo="Japan">Japan</keyword>ese corporations too is growing. Apart from the Hitachi deal, others such as NTT too have been active buyers. In 2012 Japan’s <keyword id="913532" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="40" keywordseo="NTT-Communications">NTT Communications</keyword> bought a majority stake in technology firm <keyword id="423557" type="COMPANY" weightage="40" keywordseo="Netmagic">Netmagic</keyword> for about Rs 900 crore. “India is becoming the laboratory for products and services for the world,” said Krishnan Ganesh, <keyword id="36740" type="POSITION" weightage="40" keywordseo="founder">founder</keyword> of online tutoring company TutorVista that was bought by the UK’s <keyword id="152222" type="CITY" weightage="40" keywordseo="Pearson">Pearson</keyword> group at an enterprise value of about Rs 1,000 crore. 
 
After the acquisition, the number of students using the services of TutorVista has tripled to four million across both the local and the US market. Pearson now aims to replicate the TutorVista model in emerging markets such as Brazil, China and South Africa. 
 
In 2013, there were 100 merger and acquisition deals across the India’s information technology industry. Of this, 31 whose value was announced were worth $1,906 million (Rs 11,807 crore), according to research firm Venture Intelligence. 
 The trigger for this growing M&amp;A activity is the range of disruptive technology startups emerging out of India. Companies such as advertising network InMobi, data analytics company Mu Sigma and online retailer <keyword id="6354742" type="COMPANY" weightage="40" keywordseo="Flipkart">Flipkart</keyword> have achieved a scale where they are valued at over $1 billion. “This is driven by leading-edge globally competitive technologies,” said Naren Gupta cofounder and managing director of Nexus Venture Partners, an early investor in Netmagic and online retailer <keyword id="541988" type="COMPANY" weightage="40" keywordseo="SnapDeal">Snapdeal</keyword>. 
 For instance, Pune-based <keyword id="741520" type="COMPANY" weightage="40" keywordseo="Druva">Druva</keyword> provides data security and retrieval software to customers such as US space agency <keyword id="6360409" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="40" keywordseo="NASA">Nasa</keyword>, drug maker <keyword id="44612" type="CITY" weightage="40" keywordseo="Pfizer">Pfizer</keyword> and fashion brand <keyword id="5940" type="PERSON" weightage="40" keywordseo="Louis-Vuitton">Louis Vuitton</keyword>.

	&#xa0;</div> In Chennai, Perfint Healthcare has developed robots that treat cancer by precisely inserting a needle in the affected area to burn or freeze a patient’s tumour, leaving the good tissue alone. The founders, all former employees of <keyword id="166456" type="COMPANY" weightage="40" keywordseo="GE-Healthcare">GE Healthcare</keyword>, quit to launch the firm when they realised the demand for such a product. For global corporations acquiring such game-changing technologies can help them enter new markets and raise barriers against competition. 
 Two years ago, when global software maker <keyword id="183292" type="CITY" weightage="40" keywordseo="Red-Hat">Red Hat</keyword> bought Bangalore-based <keyword id="6373689" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="40" keywordseo="Cloud-computing">cloud computing</keyword> startup <keyword id="724826" type="COMPANY" weightage="40" keywordseo="Gluster">Gluster</keyword> for around Rs 667 crore, it acquired a storage platform technology which it offered to its customers for the first time. The cost of technology infrastructure to set up such ventures and scale them up for acquisitions has also come down drastically. 
 “A bunch of guys can now launch an application from a garage, keep the tablet or a mobile phone as the front end and the product becomes viral in few weeks,” said Anand Babu Periasamy, cofounder of Gluster. A computer <keyword id="6369183" type="POSITION" weightage="40" keywordseo="Engineer">engineer</keyword> graduate from <keyword id="119675" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="40" keywordseo="annamalai-university">Annamalai University</keyword>, Periasamy who now works at Red Hat is aiming to build Gluster into a billion dollar business unit. 
 
Experts hope small-size technology ventures in India will also attract the attention of larger firms. “Smaller exits are the life blood for healthy startup ecosystems like in <keyword id="6355882" type="COUNTRY" weightage="40" keywordseo="israel">Israel</keyword> and US,” said Sharad Sharma co founder of software product think-tank iSpirt. Sharma is running an active M&amp;A Connect Program at iSpirt that is curating a list of several dozen companies. 
 Some of those on the radar are retail services software maker Capillary Technologies, healthcare applications provider <keyword id="1165142" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="40" keywordseo="Practo">Practo</keyword> and security software maker <keyword id="171228" type="COMPANY" weightage="40" keywordseo="Quick-Heal">Quick Heal</keyword>. According to Sharma, many of them have shown healthy growth traction and are attractive for strategic partnerships. 
 Sharma of iSpirt is of the view that a larger proportion of bootstrapped companies is stymieing merger activity in India. “It is harder for large corporations when there is no validation from <keyword id="6357097" type="COMPANY" weightage="40" keywordseo="venture-capital">venture capital</keyword> firms,” he said. 
 The other major problem say experts is that large Indian firms such as Infosys, <keyword id="10862" type="CITY" weightage="40" keywordseo="Wipro">Wipro</keyword> and <keyword id="6357150" type="CITY" weightage="40" keywordseo="TCS">TCS</keyword> have shied away from making any such purchases, despite having huge cash reserves. Infosys has $4 billion (Rs 24,000 crore) cash reserves. 
 
“When Wipro can be in soaps and vegetable oil, why can’t they be in the Flipkarts of the world,” said Ganesh of TutorVista. “They are sitting on a huge cash reserve and not a fraction has been spent on startups. That mentality is not there.” 
 
“Over the next five years, I expect that quantity will dramatically improve and we can be optimistic about merger and acquisition activity out of India,” said Nasscom’s Gururaj.

In fact, she had left the company in 2015, after 14 years in a variety of marketing roles, in order to experience smaller, DTC, tech-driven beauty brands such as Laura Geller, Clark's Botanicals, and Topix Pharmaceuticals. But when Debra Perelman, who became Revlon's first female president and CEO in 2018, approached her about rejoining as CMO, Williamson was all ears. After all, over the past half-decade Revlon had expanded beyond its iconic Revlon and Almay brands to transform into a larger company with acquisitions including Elizabeth Arden. She also liked that it had emerged as an organization open to shifting its culture toward a nimble startup sensibility and accelerated digital efforts. "I was always rooting for Revlon from the sidelines after I left," Williamson told Insider. "I have such heart for these brands." It was ultimately an easy decision to return. "This is the most collaborative, resilient organization I've ever been a part of and I love having a predominantly female leadership team," she said. <h2>Revlon saw consumer behavior shifts during the pandemic</h2>Of course, every company within the beauty industry was impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic, and starting as CMO at a global company, while working remotely, was also challenging. But Williamson points out that the industry is also fast-paced and ever-evolving, and Revlon was able to adapt quickly. "Certain categories, like lipstick, saw a deep decline due to mask-wearing and social distancing, but other categories thrived, like at-home hair care," she explained. "So from a portfolio standpoint, we had to lean into where we knew consumer behavior had shifted, then accelerate our efforts overall to build out the seamless shopping experience for our customers." <h2>The company adjusted by experimenting with digital technologies</h2>Revlon began driving bigger investments in digital technologies related to e-commerce and social channels while moving away from a primary focus on the in-store retail experience, which had dropped off during the pandemic. The marketing organization also revamped its in-house creative team with a digital-first mindset, to test and learn on new platforms such as Clubhouse, a growing audio social network, as well as TikTok, which exploded during the pandemic. For example, a TikTok partnership promoting Revlon's oil-absorbing volcanic stone face roller went viral. "That really became a knockout success that we didn't anticipate," she said. "We've had fun taking those super-visual, out-of-the-box ideas to leverage digital in that space." Revlon has also tailored its digital efforts to different markets, such as using augmented reality and live streaming tools in China, a market which Williamson explains is less about daily consumer shopping and more driven by events such as <a href="https://www.vox.com/the-goods/2019/11/11/20959700/china-singles-day-2019-prime-day-black-friday">Singles' Day</a>, the <a href="https://www.forbes.com/sites/franklavin/2021/06/21/chinas-annual-618-shopping-event-shows-consumers-are-back/?sh=65ea431465ae">618 holiday</a>, and Chinese New Year. "Their most recent event was Super Brand Day, and we launched a new product with key opinion leaders in the marketplace," she said. "We were the number one live-streaming brand that day." Other Revlon businesses also saw a digital boom over the past year, including the company's professional salon business. "A big piece of that business was in-salon training, so we've tested things like online academies," Williamson said. <h2>Williamson works closely with IT teams to understand and implement creative digital tools</h2>Williamson's marketing teams can easily access at least a dozen digital tools in a dashboard that presents common metrics across Revlon's businesses. This allows them to dig deep into data analytics and make sure the company creates unique and delineated customer journeys that drive sales. But Williamson hardly considers herself a <keyword id="6355118" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="technology">technology</keyword> expert. Instead, she explained, collaboration with IT teams is essential. "I need to understand the broad strokes of any of the tools that are embedded in today's marketing," she said, adding that she relies on her internal partners to deeply dig into things like data management. "I speak in layman's terms: This is where we need to get to, how do we get there?" she said. "We all understand and respect each other's expertise and areas of knowledge, so it truly is us all coming together and knowing what the end goal is." Nearly eight months into her new role as CMO, Williamson said that when it comes to shifting toward a startup mindset focused on digital innovation, the bottom line is focusing on testing and learning and understanding that "it's OK to fail and then move quickly." "There's a new passion in this company, and it has energized me tremendously," she said. "We've accomplished a tremendous amount when it comes to digital, but now it's about executing with excellence."

Revlon CMO shares how the global beauty company accomplishes tech innovation by 'executing with excellence'

New Delhi, Feb 5 () India's slipped to 40th position on the International Intellectual Property (IP) Index, which analyses the IP climate in 53 global economies, this year, according to a report of US Chamber of Commerce's Global Innovation Policy Center. Last year India was ranked at 36th position out of 50 countries. The US, the UK, Sweden, France and Germany remained the top five economies on the intellectual property index in 2019 retaining their spots from the last year. "Since the release of the 2016 National IPR Policy, the Government of India has made a focused effort to support investments in innovation and creativity through increasingly robust IP protection and enforcement," said Patrick Kilbride, Senior Vice President for the Global Innovation Policy Center. Implementation of the policy has improved the speed of processing for patent and trademark applications, increased awareness of IP rights among Indian innovators and creators, the centre said in a statement. It said that India has made significant progress towards establishing stronger IP protections-but the "job is not yet done". RR SHWSHW

<ul><li>India slipped ten places in the <keyword id="2040615" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Global-Competitiveness-Index">Global Competitiveness Index</keyword>, ranking at 68.</li><li>The country’s ICT technology innovation capacity is growing but isn’t backed by investment in human capital.</li><li>India’s overall score is relatively stable but countries ranked near India demonstrated more growth.</li></ul>Getting more people online has been the goal of the current Indian government since its rise to power. Fall in the price of 3G and 4G data has also made it more affordable for people to connect to the internet. Despite these strides, India fell 10 places in the World Economic Forum’s (WEF) <a href="http://www3.weforum.org/docs/WEF_TheGlobalCompetitivenessReport2019.pdf">Global Competitiveness Index</a>, ranking at 68. India’s slip in the rankings is only partially because of the fall in its score — a drop of 0.7 points. The report notes that a greater factor may have been because other countries — which were previously ranked lower on the Global Competitiveness Index — have shown faster improvement, especially when it comes to the adoption of information and technology. India has improved significantly since 2017, but information and communication technology (ICT) continues to remain a challenge due to underlying factors like women participation in the workforce and weak workers’ policies. India and other emerging economies are also showing signs of stagnation and slowdown since their growth has largely been ‘anaemic’ — or unequal. India’s mixed results More ICT means more innovation, according to the WEF. In order to deal with the growth of their innovation capacity, emerging economies — like China, India and Brazil — need to strengthen their skills and labour market. Technological integration is good on paper. But, without human capital investment, it remains largely inadequate. India performed well in terms of innovation, ranking 35th in the world. But, it falls short when it comes to other foundational enablers of competitiveness on the Global Competitiveness Index. The one thing that does work in India’s favour is its market size. Even its financial sector ranks better than most other countries despite the high delinquency rate — that’s not to say that the banking system has not weakened. On the other hand, India ranks as low as 107th when it comes to skills, and is at 101th in terms of product market efficiency. The country’s labour market needs transformation in order to protect its workers and also encourage female participation in the world place — which is abysmally low at a rank of 128 — according to the WEF. This is also reflected the level of inequality in India. Income share of the top 10% in the country is higher than levels seen in the US, China and even Russia. India’s progress was good — Others were better The East Asia and Pacific region is the most competitive in the world. Countries like Singapore, Japan and Taiwan lead the charge on the rest of the world. In fact, Singapore holds the highest rank on the Global Competitive Index. But India lags woefully behind, according to the WEF. Countries ranked near India all show small, but significant improvements in their score. Vietnam, for instance, is ranked 67 and moved up 10 places in the index showing 3.5 points of improvement. Azerbaijan made an even greater jump of 11 places even though its competitive score only increased by 2.7 points to rank at 58. Turkey was able to maintain its rank at 61 but only because its performance improved by 0.5 points. One of the reasons for its improved competitiveness is the diffusion of the Internet across the country. Turkey’s also has more women participating in the workforce and has strengthened workers’ rights. Colombia, 57th on the Global Competitive Index, moved up three places brushing up its score by 1.1 points. India vs BRICS Among the BRICS nations, China is the best performer, maintaining its 28th position and outranking the Russian Federation at 43. That’s 40 places and 14 points ahead of India on the Global Competitive Index. China’s performance is almost at par with OECD standards. In fact, its ICT adoption outperforms all 25 of the OECD countries. South Africa, also moved up 7 places in the Global Competitive Index with a score improvement of 1.7 points ranking at 60. The only BRICS nation to rank lower than India is Brazil at 71. The number of average daily users on the platform surged during COVID-19 shutdowns to 42.1 million in the quarter ending March 31, 2021, right after the company went public in a March IPO. "Roblox was one of the places that really brought community, connection, and joy to people during the pandemic," she told Insider, adding that before she joined the company, she saw both of her children connecting with friends on Roblox "as their creative outlet, playground, and social connection." Messing said she has always been attracted to brands with big ambitions and an eye toward driving scale. Previously, she served as SVP and CMO at Walmart, which was in the midst of a digital transformation, and before that, she spent seven years as CMO at TripAdvisor, which revolutionized how people planned and booked travel online. "I think about brands as mission-driven," she said. "The nice thing about technology such as Roblox is you can drive so much scale just by the very nature of being a platform."<h2>Creating partnerships to advance technology innovation</h2>Partnerships are an essential part of Roblox's efforts to take its creative technology innovation to the next level, Messing said. That includes close alignment between teams and <keyword id="3630817" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="C-suite">C-suite</keyword> leaders, brand partnerships, and deep connections with third-party developers. "There is a really strong partnership between the marketing, engineering, and product teams at Roblox - it's probably the most collaborative culture I've ever experienced," she said, pointing out that the marketing organization needs to be able to deeply understand the underlying technology that helps Roblox function."We run over 50 small teams responsible for working on our strategic priorities within the Roblox operating system, but while they work independently, we do monthly reviews to go over technical challenges and get feedback," she said. "It's actually been a nice place for me to learn quickly because I can see the breadth and depth of what Roblox offers across different areas." Brand partnerships have also become a crucial way for Roblox to stretch its innovation muscles and bring people together in new ways. For example, a May partnership with Gucci brought to virtual life a version of the fashion house's multimedia exhibition in Florence, Italy, called Gucci Garden Archetypes. The Roblox experience included themed rooms, avatar transformations, and limited-edition virtual merchandise. "That really pushed the platform and let us show the opportunities and the expansiveness of what brands could do on Roblox," Messing said. "I am truly blown away by the creativity of our developers and I felt a sense of wonder as a consumer." Messing's team also recently launched an immersive experience tied to the film "In the Heights," and last year over 30 million users attended a Lil Nas X concert in the Roblox metaverse. <h2>Working with creators and developers to drive continued success</h2>Roblox also partners closely with its community of creators and developers, which Messing said is key to driving the platform's ongoing innovation and success. The company's annual Roblox Developer Conference is a special invite-only event for artists, game developers, designers, storytellers, and coders from the Roblox community, while Messing explained that an accelerator program helps support and develop the next generation of Roblox creators and developers. "In general, nearly everything on the Roblox platform is user-generated, so we have a massive engineering team and product team whose sole focus is to build the tools and requirements that developers need to realize all their creative dreams as they build on Roblox," she said. Nowadays, Messing, who worked remotely at first, enjoys driving to the company's San Mateo, California, offices and meeting with teams to partner in person. But she explained that a virtual version of Roblox headquarters in the metaverse also made her feel connected over the past months. "We had a holiday party on the platform, and it's really quite amazing because it looks exactly the same in real life," she said. "When I finally drove to San Mateo and saw the fountain, the door, and the entrance, I was laughing because I had been there virtually so many times."
