<ul><li>India slipped ten places in the <keyword id="2040615" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Global-Competitiveness-Index">Global Competitiveness Index</keyword>, ranking at 68.</li><li>The country’s ICT technology innovation capacity is growing but isn’t backed by investment in human capital.</li><li>India’s overall score is relatively stable but countries ranked near India demonstrated more growth.</li></ul>Getting more people online has been the goal of the current Indian government since its rise to power. Fall in the price of 3G and 4G data has also made it more affordable for people to connect to the internet. Despite these strides, India fell 10 places in the World Economic Forum’s (WEF) <a href="http://www3.weforum.org/docs/WEF_TheGlobalCompetitivenessReport2019.pdf">Global Competitiveness Index</a>, ranking at 68. India’s slip in the rankings is only partially because of the fall in its score — a drop of 0.7 points. The report notes that a greater factor may have been because other countries — which were previously ranked lower on the Global Competitiveness Index — have shown faster improvement, especially when it comes to the adoption of information and technology. India has improved significantly since 2017, but information and communication technology (ICT) continues to remain a challenge due to underlying factors like women participation in the workforce and weak workers’ policies. India and other emerging economies are also showing signs of stagnation and slowdown since their growth has largely been ‘anaemic’ — or unequal. India’s mixed results More ICT means more innovation, according to the WEF. In order to deal with the growth of their innovation capacity, emerging economies — like China, India and Brazil — need to strengthen their skills and labour market. Technological integration is good on paper. But, without human capital investment, it remains largely inadequate. India performed well in terms of innovation, ranking 35th in the world. But, it falls short when it comes to other foundational enablers of competitiveness on the Global Competitiveness Index. The one thing that does work in India’s favour is its market size. Even its financial sector ranks better than most other countries despite the high delinquency rate — that’s not to say that the banking system has not weakened. On the other hand, India ranks as low as 107th when it comes to skills, and is at 101th in terms of product market efficiency. The country’s labour market needs transformation in order to protect its workers and also encourage female participation in the world place — which is abysmally low at a rank of 128 — according to the WEF. This is also reflected the level of inequality in India. Income share of the top 10% in the country is higher than levels seen in the US, China and even Russia. India’s progress was good — Others were better The East Asia and Pacific region is the most competitive in the world. Countries like Singapore, Japan and Taiwan lead the charge on the rest of the world. In fact, Singapore holds the highest rank on the Global Competitive Index. But India lags woefully behind, according to the WEF. Countries ranked near India all show small, but significant improvements in their score. Vietnam, for instance, is ranked 67 and moved up 10 places in the index showing 3.5 points of improvement. Azerbaijan made an even greater jump of 11 places even though its competitive score only increased by 2.7 points to rank at 58. Turkey was able to maintain its rank at 61 but only because its performance improved by 0.5 points. One of the reasons for its improved competitiveness is the diffusion of the Internet across the country. Turkey’s also has more women participating in the workforce and has strengthened workers’ rights. Colombia, 57th on the Global Competitive Index, moved up three places brushing up its score by 1.1 points. India vs BRICS Among the BRICS nations, China is the best performer, maintaining its 28th position and outranking the Russian Federation at 43. That’s 40 places and 14 points ahead of India on the Global Competitive Index. China’s performance is almost at par with OECD standards. In fact, its ICT adoption outperforms all 25 of the OECD countries. South Africa, also moved up 7 places in the Global Competitive Index with a score improvement of 1.7 points ranking at 60. The only BRICS nation to rank lower than India is Brazil at 71. India falls 10 places in Global Competitive Index as others race ahead in technology

<a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Indian+economy">India</a> has improved a lot in competitiveness of the country’s institutions and macroeconomic environment and it is showing. Among <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=emerging+economies">emerging economies</a>, India has ended five years of decline. 
 
India moved up 16 positions to rank 55th on a global index of the world's most <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=competitive+economies">competitive economies</a>. The list was topped by Switzerland. 
 
This is an indication that India has improved slightly in infrastructure, the <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=World+Economic+Forum+">World Economic Forum</a> (WEF) said in its latest Global Competitiveness Report. 
 
The top five countries that featured in the report were Switzerland, Singapore, the US, Germany and the Netherlands. 
Nations like Japan, Hong Kong, Finland, Sweden and the UK were in top ten. 
 
According to WEF, the most problematic <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=ease+of+doing+business">factors for doing business in India</a> include corruption, policy instability, inflation and access to finance. 
 However, India ranked better in areas like investor protection, gross national savings, quality of education system, <keyword id="6357097" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="venture-capital">venture capital</keyword> availability, hiring and firing practices, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=GDP">GDP</a> and domestic market size, public trust in politicians and burden of government regulation. 
Meanwhile, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=china">China</a> was at 28th spot. 
 
In terms of competitiveness of its institutions, India is ranked 60th (out of total 140 countries and up 10 positions from last year), while for infrastructure it has gained six places to 81st. 
 
For macroeconomic environment, India is ranked 91st, helped by a reduction in commodity prices and improvement in the government's budget deficit. 
 
Geneva-based think-tank, WEF, said its survey of top executives also finds corruption followed by political instability and inflation, as the most problematic factor to doing business in the country. 
 
The study, released today, assesses 140 countries on the basis of factors driving their productivity and prosperity.

global competitiveness index

Working in India is still okay, but if you can, plan your retirement somewhere outside India, because the country has been ranked last in the Natixis Global AssManagement's fourth annual <keyword id="3503702" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Global-Retirement-Index">Global Retirement Index</keyword> (GRI). 
 
This makes India world's worst country for retirees. 
 
Talking of the top rankers, Switzerland, Norway and Iceland are among the top three countries where retirees have the best life; global power United States ranks 14th on the list. 
 
The list comprises of 43 nations, taking 34 from IMF's advanced economies, five from OECD and four from BRICS. Last year, the list had covered 150 countries, in which India ranked 88th. Even then, it was the worst-performing nation from BRICS. 
 
"In the health sub-index, India ranks last. India has a health index score of just 4%, the lowest score in any sub-index in this year's GRI," the report said. 
 
The objective behind this annual retirement index is to provide a global benchmark for retirees and future retirees so that they can evaluate and compare the suitability of various nations, and plan their retirement according to their expectations and needs. 
 
In 2014, India saw its elderly population crossing the 100 million mark, out of which half live below the poverty line. As per a report by HelpAge India, elderly Indians will be making up 20% of India's population by 2050. 
 
"India is last in the quality of Life sub-index with a score of 6%. India has the lowest score for air quality, happiness and water and sanitation and the second to last in biodiversity and habitat," the report added.

India ranks LAST in global retirement index

The index analyzed six pillars for 134 countries such as each country's ability to enable, attract, grow, and retain talent, as well as the quality of vocational and technical skills and global knowledge skills.The list has remained rather steady at the top over the last decade of the index, dominated by wealthier countries that more easily attract talent.It's likely that <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/jobs-ai-chatgpt-career-change-reskilling-tech-training-workers-disruptions-2023-11">AI</a> could further separate robust labor markets from less advanced ones, the report noted. And amid global economic uncertainty impacting trade and investments, INSEAD predicts these so-called "talent wars" to continue.Switzerland has held the top spot on the list for 10 consecutive years. Switzerland is the global leader in enabling and retaining talent, the report found, and it ranked second in vocational and technical skills. It also ranked first in sustainability, as it has high levels of social protection and a high-quality natural environment.Switzerland also ranked as the best country in the world, according to a <a target="_blank" rel=" nofollow" href="https://www.usnews.com/news/best-countries/rankings">U.S. News &amp; World Report analysis</a> released in September.Singapore, which ranked second, topped the list for high-level skills and talent impact. It also was in the top three for its ability to attract and grow talent, and well as its vocational and technical skills, in part due to its top-ranked formal education. The report noted how Singapore has a strong ability to match workforce supply with labor market demand, and the nation also placed fourth for external openness for attracting overseas business and talent.The US placed third overall after ranking fourth last year. The US is the global leader for growth and vocational and technical skills, as well as placed first for lifelong learning and second for formal education. The US also came in sixth for mid-level skills and employability, though it was only 22nd for attracting talent.European countries made up 17 of the top 25 positions in the index, though the United States, Australia, and Canada all were in the top 15. Notably, Japan, Spain, and Italy were not in the top 25.China ranked 40th, up from 47th last year, though India was only 103rd in the index. Though India is projected to become the world's third-largest economy, a "slump in business sentiment" has prevented India from attracting strong talent.

10 countries where talented workers are moving

<keyword id="19895063" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="india" source="keywords">India</keyword>'s rank on the <keyword id="20020435" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="World-Economic-Forum" source="keywords">World Economic Forum</keyword>'s <keyword id="21747126" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Travel-Tourism-Development-Index-2024" source="Orion">Travel &amp; Tourism Development Index 2024</keyword> has risen to 39th place, with global tourism activities returning to pre-pandemic levels, the annual report showed on Tuesday. While the US topped the list, India is ranked highest in South Asia and among the lower-middle-income economies, the <keyword id="102110" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="WEF" source="Orion">WEF</keyword> said. India was ranked 54th in the previously published index in 2021, though changes made to the index parameters limit its comparability to earlier years. After the US, Spain, Japan, France and Australia figure among the top five in the 2024 list. The index, prepared in collaboration with the University of Surrey, showed India is highly price-competitive (18th) and boasts competitive Air Transport (26th) and Ground and Port (25th) infrastructure. In particular, India's strong Natural (6th), Cultural (9th) and Non-Leisure (9th) Resources help drive travel, and the country is only one of three to score in the top 10 for all the resource pillars, the WEF said. Moreover, despite a decline compared to 2019, the country still scores well for <keyword id="2173225" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="travel-and-tourism" source="Orion">travel and tourism</keyword> demand sustainability, especially thanks to more sustainable long stays among inbound visitors. It further said that as with many economies, travel and tourism enabling conditions in India have been impacted by global inflationary supply-side trends for the sector, with price competitiveness declining, while air transport and tourist services infrastructure are yet to recover to the 2019 level. As a result, the country's overall TTDI (Travel and Tourism Development Index) score is 2.1 per cent below its 2019 level. High-income economies in Europe and Asia-Pacific continued to lead the index. "International tourist arrivals and the travel and tourism sector's contribution to global GDP are expected to return to pre-pandemic levels this year, driven by the lifting of COVID-19-related travel restrictions and strong pent-up demand," the WEF said. The Middle East had the highest recovery rates in international tourist arrivals (20 per cent above the 2019 level), while Europe, Africa and the Americas all showed a strong recovery of around 90 per cent in 2023. The biennial index analysed the travel and tourism sectors of 119 countries around a range of factors and policies. Germany was ranked 6th, followed by the UK, China, Italy and Switzerland in the top ten. The results highlighted that high-income economies generally continue to have more favourable conditions for travel and tourism development. This was helped by conducive business environments, dynamic labour markets, open travel policies, strong transport and tourism infrastructure, and well-developed natural, cultural and non-leisure attractions.

India rises to rank 39th on WEF's Travel & Tourism Development Index 2024, becomes highest ranked South Asian nation

<ul><li>India has moved 5 places up in the <keyword id="69007" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="World-Economic-Forum">World Economic Forum</keyword>’s Global Competitiveness Index (GCI) report. </li><li>Among the G-20 countries, India has made the most headway in moving up the list. </li><li>While Pakistan, Nepal and Bangladesh did worse on the GCI , China remained ahead of India ranking 28th. </li></ul>Despite the widening current account deficit and falling rupee, India has secured 58th position in the 2018 edition of annual <a href="http://www3.weforum.org/docs/GCR2018/05FullReport/TheGlobalCompetitivenessReport2018.pdf">Global Competitiveness Index</a> published by World Economic Forum (WEC). Not only is this an improvement over last year, but India has shown the most improvement among the G-20 countries by moving up five places in the 4th edition of the GCI 4.0. As per the report, the quality of research, business dynamism and innovation were the major drivers behind increase in India’s level of productivity. In fact, even the <keyword id="6354424" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="world-bank">World Bank</keyword>’s report on the Ease of Doing Business 2018 <a href="https://thediplomat.com/2017/11/the-ease-of-doing-business-in-india/">pointed out</a> how India was among the top five reformers jumping up from being 130th to 100th on their index. The country scored well in all the other parameters but fell short when it came to health, education and skills. Product Market, skills and labour market are some of the areas that have been highlighted as needing improvement. US dominated <a href="https://www.weforum.org/agenda/2018/10/most-competitive-economies-global-competitiveness-report-2018/">the list</a> by being the closest country to the competitiveness frontier. Other countries which were in the top 10 include Singapore, Germany, Switzerland, Japan, Netherlands, Hong Kong SAR, United Kingdom, Sweden and Denmark. At the other end of the spectrum were the least competitive countries of Haiti, Yemen and Chad. India’s closest rival, China, which is also a member of G-20 has secured the 28th position. In contrast, Pakistan (107), Sri Lanka (85), Nepal (109) and Bangladesh (103) are still behind India. Looking at the BRICS nations specifically, China leads the economies with a score of 72.6 at its rank of 28 while the Russian Federation ranked 43 and Brazil stood at 72. It’s been forty years that the WEC has been publishing the GCI index, an annual publication. The aim of the GCI is to determine the level of productivity in an economy. This new edition of the GCI was measured using 98 indicators and 12 pillars.

India shows the most improvement in competitiveness among the G-20 countries: Report

New Delhi, The Indian services sector expanded at the strongest rate in 12 years in February supported by <keyword id="16692020" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="favourable-demand-conditions" source="Orion">favourable demand conditions</keyword> and new business gains, a monthly survey said on Friday. The seasonally adjusted <keyword id="14109905" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="sp-global-india-services-pmi" source="Orion">S&amp;P Global India Services PMI</keyword> Business Activity Index rose from 57.2 in January to 59.4 in February -- its highest level in 12 years. For the 19th straight month, the headline figure was above the neutral 50 threshold. In Purchasing Managers' Index (PMI) parlance, a print above 50 means expansion while a score below 50 denotes contraction. "The service sector more than regained the growth momentum lost in January, posting the sharpest expansion in output for 12 years as demand resilience and competitive pricing policies underpinned the joint-best upturn in sales over the same period," said Pollyanna De Lima, Economics Associate Director at S&amp;P Global Market Intelligence. On the prices front, there was substantial moderation in cost pressures as input prices increased at the slowest pace in nearly two-and-a-half years and output charge inflation softened to a 12-month low. New orders placed with service providers rose further in February, with several firms suggesting that competitive pricing boosted sales, the survey said. Still, capacity pressures remained mild and jobs rose only marginally, it added. "Despite the strong upturn in new business intakes, service providers noted only mild pressure on their capacities and, as a result, a large proportion of firms left payroll numbers unchanged," Lima said, adding that hiring growth was also dampened by a lack of confidence in the business environment. The degree of optimism recorded in February was the lowest for seven months and below the historical trend as some companies doubted demand would remain this resilient. Others displayed concerns surrounding fierce competition for new work. Meanwhile, the S&amp;P Global India Composite PMI Output Index -- which measures combined services and manufacturing output -- rose from 57.5 in January to 59 in February, highlighting a sharp and stronger rate of expansion. "Services firms also recorded a faster upturn in new business than their manufacturing counterparts. At the composite level, sales expanded at the joint-quickest rate in 11 years," the survey said. The S&amp;P Global India Services PMI is compiled by S&amp;P Global from responses to questionnaires sent to a panel of around 400 service sector companies. The panel is stratified by detailed sector and company workforce size, based on contributions to GDP. Data collection began in December 2005.

India's services sector PMI hits 12-year high in February

India has been ranked 133th in a new Global Youth Development Index that was put together by the <keyword id="81874" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Commonwealth-Secretariat">Commonwealth Secretariat</keyword> on the Nation’s condition for youth when it comes down to employment, education, health, civic and political spheres. 
 India has ranked poorly, coming 133rd in the index that included 183 countries. India was placed below the neighboring countries like <keyword id="12266" type="COUNTRY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Nepal">Nepal</keyword> (77), Bhutan (69) and <keyword id="6355572" type="COUNTRY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Sri-Lanka">Sri Lanka</keyword> (31) and trailing behind the South Asian average. 
 
According to a report released last week that showed that India has seen an 11% improvement in score over the last five years and this highlighted the requirement for greater investment and hard-work to reap the the so-called demographic dividend. 
 
"While India's overall rank is relatively low, it has registered an impressive improvement of nearly 11 per cent in its youth development scores in the period between 2010 and 2015. The research for this report also shows that youth development levels in India lag particularly in the domains of health, education and employment. Improvements in these sectors will give India a much better chance of reaping a handsome demographic dividend," Abhik Sen, the lead author of the '2016 Global Youth Development Index' report told ET. 
 
The report highlighted the areas in which improvement is needed and they included education, employment opportunity and health and wellbeing.

India ranks poorly in Global Youth Development Index, at 133rd spot

The seasonally adjusted S&amp;P Global India Services <keyword id="104215" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="pmi" source="Orion">PMI</keyword> Business Activity Index fell to 54.3 in September, from 57.2 in August, highlighting the weakest rate of expansion since March. For the fourteenth straight month, the services sector witnessed an expansion in output. In Purchasing Managers' Index (PMI) parlance, a print above 50 means expansion, while a score below 50 denotes contraction. "The Indian service sector has overcome many adversities in recent months, with the latest PMI data continuing to show a strong performance despite some loss of growth momentum in September," said <keyword id="2835710" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="pollyanna-de-lima" source="Orion">Pollyanna De Lima</keyword>, Economics Associate Director at S&amp;P Global Market Intelligence. The upturn was reportedly restricted by price pressures, an increasingly competitive environment and unfavourable public policies, the survey said. <keyword id="15735" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="lima" source="Orion">Lima</keyword> further noted that the steep depreciation of the rupee seen towards the end of the month due to interest rate hikes in the US present additional challenges to the Indian economy. "Currency instability poses renewed inflation worries as imported items become more costly, and undoubtedly means that the <keyword id="30067" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="rbi" source="Orion">RBI</keyword> will continue hiking interest rates to protect the rupee and contain price pressures," Lima said. On September 30, the monetary policy committee (<keyword id="6369693" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="mpc" source="Orion">MPC</keyword>) of the <keyword id="6354335" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="reserve-bank-of-india" source="Orion">Reserve Bank of India</keyword> (RBI) raised the key lending rate or the repo rate to 5.90 per cent - the highest since April 2019. The MPC also decided to remain focused on the withdrawal of the accommodative policy stance to ensure that inflation remains within the target going forward, while supporting growth, RBI Governor <keyword id="6359111" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="shaktikanta-das" source="Orion">Shaktikanta Das</keyword> said. According to Lima, an upturn in inflation could damage consumer spending, dampen business confidence and test the resilience of the Indian service sector in the coming months but, at least for September, service providers were strongly upbeat towards growth prospects. The survey further noted that weak external demand weighed on overall sales, with international orders declining further in September. Monthly contractions have been recorded in each month since the onset of COVID-19. The data highlighted a continued revival in business confidence, with sentiment at its highest level in over seven-and-a-half years. Service providers signalled a further increase in their operating expenses during September, owing to higher energy, food, labour and material costs. On the employment front, though capacity pressures moderated in September, efforts to clear pending workloads and ongoing expansions in sales supported another round of job creation. However, employment rose at a slower rate than in August, the survey said. Meanwhile, the S&amp;P Global India Composite PMI Output Index -- which measures combined services and manufacturing output -- slipped from 58.2 in August to 55.1 in September, pointing to the weakest rate of expansion since March. Private sector sales rose at the weakest pace in six months, amid softer increases in the manufacturing and services economies. The S&amp;P Global India Services PMI® is compiled by S&amp;P Global from responses to questionnaires sent to a panel of around 400 service sector companies. The panel is stratified by detailed sector and company workforce size, based on contributions to GDP. Data collection began in December 2005. India's service sector activity falls to 6-month low in Sep amid inflation, competition: PMI

New Delhi, India's services sector activity eased in August but growth rates for new orders remain elevated, as services firms indicated the sharpest upturn in new export business which acted as a catalyst for firms to expand their workforces as well as output, a monthly survey said on Tuesday. Despite falling from 62.3 in July to 60.1 in August, the seasonally adjusted S&amp;P Global India Services PMI Business Activity Index indicated one of the strongest increases in output seen since mid-2010. For the 25th straight month, the headline figure was above the neutral 50 threshold. In Purchasing Managers' Index (PMI) parlance, a print above 50 means expansion while a score below 50 denotes contraction. "Indian services companies achieved a remarkable milestone in August, as they welcomed a series record surge in new export business. Several regions contributed to the upturn, including Asia Pacific, Europe, North America and the Middle East," <keyword id="2835710" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="pollyanna-de-lima" source="Orion">Pollyanna De Lima</keyword>, Economics Associate Director at S&amp;P Global Market Intelligence, said. Lima further noted that this spike in international demand supported one of the best sales performances recorded over the past 13 years, and acted as a catalyst for firms to expand their workforces as well as output. "Demand strength also fostered a heightened sense of optimism regarding the outlook, boding well for economic growth prospects," Lima said. On August 10, the <keyword id="6354335" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="reserve-bank-of-india" source="Orion">Reserve Bank of India</keyword> (RBI) left its key interest rates unchanged for a third straight meeting but signalled tighter policy if food prices drive inflation higher. The next meeting of the <keyword id="3446352" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="rbi-monetary-policy-committee" source="Orion">RBI Monetary Policy Committee</keyword> (MPC) is scheduled for October 4-6. On the prices front, buoyant demand for services meanwhile aided a further upward revision to selling prices. The rate of charge inflation quickened to the joint-fastest in over six years, while input costs rose to a lesser extent. "... Favourable demand trends also led to the joint-fastest increase in prices charged for Indian services in over six years, which may prompt attention from policymakers and potentially delay cuts to the benchmark repo rate," Lima added. On the jobs front, hiring activity across India's service economy continued to expand. The rate of job creation was moderate, but the strongest seen since last November. Going ahead, monitored companies firmly believed that output would remain on an upward growth path over the course of the coming 12 months. Advertising, demand strength, plans to price competitively and a healthy number of client enquiries all boosted optimism in August. Meanwhile, there was a mild slowdown in the growth of private sector activity across India during August. The S&amp;P Global India Composite PMI Output Index -- which measures combined services and manufacturing output -- fell from 61.9 in July to 60.9 in August. Despite the fall, the S&amp;P Global India Composite PMI Output Index was indicative of a sharp rate of expansion that was among the strongest in over 12 years, the survey said. The S&amp;P Global India Services PMI is compiled by S&amp;P Global from responses to questionnaires sent to a panel of around 400 service sector companies. The panel is stratified by detailed sector and company workforce size, based on contributions to GDP. Data collection began in December 2005.
