<div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image"></div></div></div>Taking action on climate change will be helpful, not hurtful, for the economy.
That's according to Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) administrator Gina McCarthy, who spoke in a public forum on September 24, and the results of a number of recent climate reports.
The forum was hosted by <a href="http://www.rff.org/Pages/default.aspx">Resources for the Future</a>, a nonprofit organization that conducts economic and social research on environmental issues. There, McCarthy spoke on the United States' role as a world leader in climate change action and the ways such action will boost the nation's coffers.
"The bottom line is: We don't act despite the economy, we act because of the economy," McCarthy said.
Her speech came just two days after the <a href="http://www.un.org/climatechange/summit/">United Nations' 2014 Climate Change Summit</a>, in which leaders from around the world convened to discuss their progress in cutting emissions, investing in renewable energies, and preserving natural resources, as well as their goals for continuing to address climate change in the future.
There, Pres. Obama described the EPA's proposed <a href="http://www2.epa.gov/carbon-pollution-standards/clean-power-plan-proposed-rule">Clean Power Plan</a>, which will crack down on carbon emissions from energy plants, as well as his newly announced plan to<a href="http://www.whitehouse.gov/the-press-office/2014/09/16/fact-sheet-obama-administration-partners-private-sector-new-commitments-"> slash hydrofluorocarbons</a>, environmentally harmful chemicals that help drive global warming.
McCarthy added at the forum that investment in wind and solar energy creates "thousands of jobs that cannot be shipped overseas," and taking action against climate change will reduce the economic threats inherent in natural disasters, extreme weather events, and other events brought on by global warming.
Some states have expressed concerns that the EPA is asking for too much too soon, particularly when it comes to the Clean Power Plan's state-based emissions reductions proposals. But McCarthy insisted at the forum that the long-term benefits will be well worth the effort.
"Every dollar we invest in the Clean Power Plan will return seven dollars in health benefits," she said. "One dollar to make 7 dollars. In 2030, total climate and health benefits will reach up to 93 billion dollars."
McCarthy cited a number of recent reports touting the economic benefits of addressing climate change, including a report released by an international commission just last week titled"<a href="http://newclimateeconomy.report/">The New Climate Economy</a>," which suggests that efforts to tackle climate change could actually promote economic growth, and a <a href="https://www.cdp.net/CDPResults/CDP-global-cities-report-2014.pdf">new report from the Carbon Disclosure Project</a> proposing that climate change action in cities protects businesses and the capital they generate.
But amidst complaints about the heavy-handedness of the EPA's proposal, others have argued that the US still isn't doing enough of its share. In a statement following Obama's address to the UN Tuesday, environmentalist and 350.org cofounder Bill McKibben said, "Today's boasts about his climate efforts ring hollow in the face of America passing Saudi Arabia and Russia as the world's largest oil and gas producer. We hope that when 'next year' comes and he proposes actual targets, they'll start to reverse the trend."
Still, McCarthy remains optimistic about the US's role in the global effort to fight climate change. "We know a global problem needs a global solution," she said. "Although we can't act for other nations, when the United States of America leads, other nations follow."

This client paid the money on time and didn't create any political problems," Birol said.But Europe's energy crisis could threaten unity amongst EU members, he warned, saying he feared "a wild west scenario" in which countries restrict trade or stop cooperating in order to secure their own supplies for the winter."The implications will be very bad for energy, very bad for the economy, but extremely bad politically," Birol told the FT on the sidelines of the Global Clean Energy Action Forum in Pittsburgh. "If Europe fails this test in energy, it can go beyond energy implications."

More climate finance deals</h2>Some solutions to the climate crisis already exist, according to Sweta Chakraborty, behavioral scientist and CEO of climate solutions organization <a href="https://app.wedonthavetime.org/">We Don't Have Time</a>.She told Insider that the next step is capitalizing on these tools, which is why she expects climate finance — i.e. paying for these tools — to be a big issue at Davos this year. Jennifer Morris, CEO of <a href="https://www.nature.org/en-us/">The Nature Conservancy</a>, a global environmental nonprofit, agreed. She said that the biggest challenge in reaching climate goals is <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/sustainable-finance-drives-goals-around-climate-equity-prosperity-and-governance-2022-3">finding the money.</a>"In 2023, I want to see more robust financing from private investors," Morris said. "Currently, it takes more than $4 of public money to leverage $1 of private money. We urgently need that ratio to start to reverse."In 2022, countries including Belize and Barbados took on climate commitments as part of sovereign debt conversion deals, supported by The Nature Conservancy. Countries can go into "sovereign debt" when they borrow money. A sovereign debt conversion deal enables governments to convert a portion of this debt into sustainability financing. For instance, in one deal, the Government of Barbados was able to transfer part of its sovereign debt service into ocean conservation funding.Morris said that there could be more sovereign debt deals to come. "Developing countries want to join the fight against the climate crisis and need financial support to be successful," she said.<h2>2. Getting out of 'silos' and addressing interlinked crises, like climate and health</h2><a href="https://affiliate.insider.com?postID=63c1927516ce4f56a06e02d6&amp;site=bi&amp;u=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.nature.com%2Farticles%2Fs41558-022-01426-1">A recent study</a> found that over half of infectious diseases could be exacerbated by the climate crisis, such as warming temperatures and increased rainfall. Alice Bell, head of climate and health at the <a href="https://wellcome.org/">Wellcome Trust</a>, emphasized the links between climate and health."We're especially excited about the prospect of getting out of the silos of talking about either climate or health on their own, and getting deep into a really collaborative discussion about the intersection of the two issues," she told Insider.Morris agreed that there are multiple crises to deal with. "We must also acknowledge that we are addressing a confluence of crises that are interconnected," she said, citing the war in Ukraine, a concerning outlook for the global economy, and the continued effects of the pandemic. "Throughout it all, we must be careful not to pit our immediate needs against our long-term survival," Morris said.<h2>3. A plan to redirect fossil-fuel subsidies to clean energy</h2>With 52 heads of state and over 500 CEOs heading to Davos this year, Chakraborty said that the meeting is the "perfect convening" to focus on financing a clean energy transition and "to accelerate the public-private partnerships needed to turn our goals into reality."One way to do this, according to Chakraborty, would be to phase out fossil-fuel subsidies and redirect that money to investments that will help scale green solutions faster.Fossil-fuel subsidies are a way for governments to lower the cost of fossil fuels. Often, the subsidies come in the form of tax breaks on either the consumption or production of fossil fuels such as oil and coal. According to <a href="https://www.imf.org/en/Publications/WP/Issues/2021/09/23/Still-Not-Getting-Energy-Prices-Right-A-Global-and-Country-Update-of-Fossil-Fuel-Subsidies-466004">research by the International Monetary Fund</a>, global fossil-fuel subsidies in 2020 totalled $5.9 trillion — which equates to around 6.8% of GDP."The goal of redirecting fossil-fuel subsidies to clean energy is to accelerate the transition to a low-carbon economy and help mitigate the effects of the climate crisis by reducing greenhouse gas emissions," she said. "This will also level the playing field and allow for a much more rapid and equitable rollout of the next generation of clean energy."Chakraborty added: "It's time to harness the scientific research, scalable solutions, and the momentum of public and private interest."

The problem is when people like him in power still don't understand the global consequences of acting later rather than sooner.

New Delhi, Jan 27 () Commerce and industry Minister Piyush Goyal on Monday suggested the Brazilian side to reconstitute and activate India-Brazil Business Leaders Forum to boost economic ties between the two countries.
The minister said that he would be happy to hear from Brazilian side on the suggestion.
"I have a suggestion for consideration of the Honourable President (of Brazil Jair Bolsonaro) and business leaders of both the sides. Some years ago, we had started India Brazil Business Leaders Forum, which some how for various reasons has not yet taken off," Goyal said.
He was speaking at the luncheon meeting of business leaders of both the sides in the presence of the Brazilian President.
Goyal said that both the countries can use this opportunity, where business leaders of both the countries have gathered, "to activate" that forum and "we will re-constitute it to make it more relevant and contemporary to businesses which are working with Brazil".
He requested the Indian industry to give fresh nominations of people who are looking for engaging with the South American country.
Talking about business opportunities in both the countries, he said that businesses of both the sides can look at potential in areas like railways, infrastructure, tourism, agriculture, clan energy and startups.
The minister said that both the countries have set up a target to take the bilateral trade to USD 15 billion by 2022 from the current USD 8.3 billion.
Goyal, who also hold the railways portfolio, said that there is a plan to make Indian Railways net-zero carbon emitter by 2030 and 100 per cent electrification by 2024.
Speaking at the function, Bolsonaro said that huge potential is there for Indian businesses in Brazil.

Brazilian Foreign Minister Ernesto fraga Araujo said both the countries can increase cooperation in attracting investments.

Increase in cooperation in clean energy can help both the countries to become a low carbon economy, he said.
Brazilian Agriculture Minister Teresa Cristina said that huge investment potential is there in the sector for both the sides.
