Around 26 per cent of <keyword id="19896991" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="cancer" source="keywords">cancer</keyword> patients in <keyword id="19895063" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="India" source="keywords">India</keyword> have tumours in the head and neck, and there is an upward trend of such cases in the country, a study has found. The findings of the study, conducted on 1,869 cancer patients across the country, were released on the World <keyword id="20775483" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="head-and-neck-cancer" source="keywords">Head and Neck Cancer</keyword> Day observed on Saturday. <br /><br /> Cancer Mukt Bharat Foundation, a Delhi-based non-profit organisation, conducted the study by collating data from calls received on its helpline number from March 1 to June 30. <br /><br /> Dr. Ashish Gupta, a senior oncologist who is heading the Cancer Mukt Bharat Campaign in India, said that India is seeing surge in head and neck cancer cases, especially among young men, due to increased <keyword id="20681485" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="tobacco-consumption" source="keywords">tobacco consumption</keyword> and human papillomavirus (HPV) infection. <br /><br /> "Around 80-90 pc of oral cancer patients have been found to use tobacco in some form, be it smoking or chewing. Most of the head and neck cancer are preventable, unlike other cancers for which the reason is unknown. It is a preventable cancer that can be prevented with lifestyle modification. <br /><br /> "There is a need to raise awareness to quit tobacco and early check-ups for early pickup of the disease," Gupta said. <br /><br /> In India, nearly two-thirds of cancer cases are detected late likely due to low adoption of proper screening, he said. <br /><br /> Gupta added that the Cancer Mukt Bharat campaign aims to reduce the incidence and impact of cancer on individuals and communities through education and early detection. <br /><br /> "If found early in stages one or two, most head and neck cancers are curable in more than 80 pc of patients. In the field of cancer treatment, we get new medicines almost every week which can treat cancer in better way leading to better outcomes and good quality of life. <br /><br /> "A combination of surgery, radiation therapy, chemotherapy, targeted therapy, and immunotherapy can be used for treating head and neck cancer. Latest cancer treatment has evolved to prioritize not just curing the disease, but also ensuring a good quality of life for survivors," he said. <br /><br /> Under the Cancer Mukt Bharat Campaign, a free national helpline number (93-555-20202) was launched recently, which is operational from 10 am to 5 pm from Monday to Saturday. <br /><br /> Cancer patients can call on this number to speak to leading oncologists directly or even do a video call to discuss about their treatment without paying any fees. <br /><br /> Head and neck cancer was closely followed by gastrointestinal cancers which was 16 per cent. Fufteen per cent cancers in India re breast cancers and and blood cancers make up 9 per cent of them. <br /><br /> These data are in line with the latest GLOBOCAN data -- a database that gives global cancer statistics -- on India. Cancers in head and neck rising, account for 26% cases in India: Study

Increasing incidence of <keyword id="49477" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="lung" source="Orion">lung</keyword> cancer among non-smokers has become a matter of concern in the country, as per health experts.<br /><br />To raise awareness about lung cancer, August 1 every year is observed as the <keyword id="4831539" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="world-lung-cancer-day" source="Orion">World Lung Cancer Day</keyword>.<br /><br />According to the <keyword id="6356311" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="world-health-organisation" source="Orion">World Health Organisation</keyword> (WHO), lung cancer is prevalent and more people succumb to deadly disease than from colon, breast and liver cancers combined.<br /><br />Lung cancer is the leading cause of male cancer-related deaths in more than 25 countries, with the upwards trend, experts are expressing fears that the<br /><br />Talking to IANS, Dr Nitin Yashas, Consultant - Medical Oncology and <keyword id="14606671" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="hemato-oncology" source="Orion">Hemato-Oncology,</keyword> Manipal Hospital Sarjapur, explained that there has been an increase in the lung cancer cases that among the non-smokers. While smoking continues to be an important cause, indoor and outdoor pollution and also second hand exposure to smoke have been considered as significant factors. A majority of the lung cancers present in an advanced stage 4 disease with poor long term survival outcomes.<br /><br />Quoting globocan 2020 data, Yashas said that lung cancer is one of the top five occurring cancers in the country with an estimated approximately 75,000 new cases. Most patients of lung cancer are diagnosed in the age group of 50-70 year, he said.<br /><br />Globocan stands for the <keyword id="14606670" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="global-cancer-observatory" source="Orion">Global Cancer Observatory</keyword>, an interactive web-based platform presenting gobal cancer statistics.<br /><br />"However, with the advent of genomic sequencing of tumors, there are a lot of newer treatment approaches available. Lung cancers particularly in non- smokers are driven by certain genetic mutations for which we offer targeted therapy in the form of oral tablets which shows good responses and prolonged survival," he said.<br /><br />Dr Nitin Yashas further that immunotherapy wherein the body's immune mechanism is activated to fight cancer cells has revolutionised the treatment of lung cancer and is often given in combination with chemotherapy resulting in long survival in years in a subset of patients and is now being evaluated for its efficacy in earlier stages also.<br /><br />According to Dr Sandeep Nayak P, Director - Department of Surgical Oncology and Robotic and Laparoscopic <keyword id="26785" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="surgery" source="Orion">Surgery</keyword>, <keyword id="116831" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="fortis-hospitals" source="Orion">Fortis Hospitals</keyword>, <keyword id="6354321" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="bengaluru" source="Orion">Bengaluru</keyword>, lung cancer is the most common cause of cancer related death in India. The reason is that most lung cancers are diagnosed very late.<br /><br />Lung cancer in early stages does not produce any symptoms or may produce symptoms that are confused with allergy, simple cough, etc. It is also important to note that more than 70 per cent of lung cancers happen in smokers, he says.<br /><br />Dr Sandeep Nayak explains: "We know that smokers are the most vulnerable for lung cancer and we also know that a screening CT scan of lung done every once in a year for heavy smokers can pick up lung cancers early enough to prevent death due to lung cancer." This was a result of a recent research study. The screening CT scan is a low dose scan and can pick lung cancer very early saving many lives, he adds.<br /><br />Surgery has remained the main treatment for lung cancer when it is curable. Surgeries have moved from macabre surgeries to very subtle over the years both in extent and approach. There was a time when the entire lung had to be removed in order to remove lung cancer, Dr. Nayak says.<br /><br />"With the emergence of robotic surgery and fluorescence technology today we are able to remove only a small segment of lung which bears tumors, sparing the rest of the healthy lung. World Lung Cancer Day: Rise of disease among non-smokers a concern

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Some <keyword id="74032" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Sunscreen">sunscreen</keyword> batches have been found to contain benzene, a cancer-causing chemical.</li><li>Long-term benzene exposure has been linked to a five-fold increase in leukemia risk.</li><li>The lab that identified the contaminated batches is asking the <keyword id="6354656" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="fda">FDA</keyword> to recall the products.</li></ul><p>An independent laboratory is calling for 40 batches of sunscreen products to be pulled from shelves after they were found to contain significant amounts of benzene, a known <keyword id="965284" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="carcinogen">carcinogen</keyword>.</p><p>Benzene has been linked to increased <keyword id="29796" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="cancer-risk">cancer risk</keyword> since 1977, when a <a href="https://www.thelancet.com/journals/lancet/article/PIIS0140-6736(77)90074-5/fulltext">landmark study</a> found workers who were exposed to benzene over nine years had a five times higher than normal risk of leukemia. Nowadays, the chemical is most commonly found in <a href="https://www.cancer.org/cancer/cancer-causes/benzene.html#:~:text=Cigarette%20smoke%20accounts%20for%20about,levels%20are%20usually%20very%20low).">cigarette smoke and gasoline fumes</a>.</p><p>Although the small amounts found in the sunscreen products are far less toxic in comparison, experts say any benzene exposure poses a <keyword id="6354750" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="health">health</keyword> risk.</p><p>"There's no such thing as a safe level of exposure, and that's especially true for children," Philip Landrigan, director of the Global Public Health Program and Global Pollution Observatory at Boston College, told <a href="https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2021-05-28/sunscreen-with-leukemia-causing-benzene-is-latest-summer-worry?sref=lbQAzuXj">Bloomberg</a>.</p><p>Valisure, a pharmaceutical testing company, tested 294 batches of sunscreen from 69 different brands. The lab is asking the Food and Drug Administration to recall 40 batches from 10 different brands including Neutrogena, Banana Boat, and CVS Health.</p><p>David Light, Valisure's founder, told Bloomberg he thinks the problem is likely rooted in specific batches, not brands. Benzene is often used as an industrial solvent, so it's possible the sunscreen makers were unknowingly using contaminated solvents in some of their products.</p><p>"In this case it really seems to be a manufacturing contaminant problem, not an inherent problem with sunscreen," Light told <a href="https://www.cnet.com/health/lab-asks-fda-to-recall-40-batches-of-sunscreen-from-neutrogena-banana-boat-and-more/">CNET</a>. "People should still continue to use sunscreen, I think, is an important message to get across."</p>

<p></p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div><ul><li><strong>The average concentration of <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/category/carbon-dioxide">carbon dioxide</a> in Earth's atmosphere just topped 410 parts per million, according to measurements from Mauna Loa Observatory in Hawaii.</strong></li><li><strong>This is the highest CO2 levels have gotten in the 800,000 years we have good data for.</strong></li><li><strong>This is expected to have a catastrophic effect on human health and the planet itself.</strong></li></ul><p><br>We have a pretty good idea of what Earth's atmosphere has looked like for the past 800,000 years.</br></p><p>Humans like us - <em>Homo sapiens</em> -&#xa0;<a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/neanderthals-created-first-cave-paintings-2018-2">only evolved about 200,000 years ago</a>, but ice-core records reveal intricate details of our planet's history from long before humans existed. By drilling more than <a href="https://theconversation.com/the-three-minute-story-of-800-000-years-of-climate-change-with-a-sting-in-the-tail-73368">3 kilometers deep into the ice sheets over Greenland and Antarctica</a>, scientists can see how temperature and atmospheric carbon dioxide levels have changed from then until now.</p><p>From that record, we know the atmosphere and the air that we breathe has never had as much carbon dioxide in it as it does today.&#xa0;</p><p>For the first time in recorded history, the average monthly level of CO2 in the atmosphere exceeded 410 parts per million (ppm) in the month of April, according to <a href="https://scripps.ucsd.edu/programs/keelingcurve/2018/05/02/carbon-dioxide-in-the-atmosphere-hits-record-high-monthly-average/">observations&#xa0;made at the Mauna Loa Observatory in Hawaii</a>.</p><p>The new record is not a coincidence - humans have rapidly transformed the air we breathe by pumping CO2 into it over the past two centuries. In recent years, we've pushed those gas levels into uncharted territory.</p><p>That change has inevitable and scary consequences. Research indicates that unchecked, this trend could directly <a href="https://news.stanford.edu/news/2008/january9/co-010908.html">lead to tens of thousands of pollution-related</a> deaths, reach a point at which it slows&#xa0;<a href="https://ehp.niehs.nih.gov/1104789/">human cognition</a>, and lead to the rising sea levels, searing heat waves, and superstorms that scientists&#xa0;<a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/climate-change-resilience-solutions-2018-4">project as effects of climate change</a>.</p><p>"As a scientist, what concerns me the most is what this continued rise actually means: that we are continuing full speed ahead with an unprecedented experiment with our planet, the only home we have," climate scientist Katharine Hayhoe <a href="https://twitter.com/KHayhoe/status/992229084326395905">said on Twitter</a> about the new record.</p><p></p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div><h2>Breathing the air of a new world</h2><p>For the 800,000 years we have records of, average global CO2 levels fluctuated between about 170 ppm and 280 ppm. Once humans started to burn fossil fuels in the industrial era, things changed rapidly.</p><p>Only in the industrial era has the number risen above 300 ppm. The concentration first crept above <a href="https://climate.nasa.gov/400ppmquotes/">400 ppm in 2013</a>, and continues to climb.&#xa0;</p><p>Scientists debate the last time CO2 levels were this high. It might have happened during the Pliocene era, between 2 and 4.6 million years ago, when <a href="http://www.ldeo.columbia.edu/node/14874">sea levels were at least 60 to 80 feet higher</a> than today. It may have been&#xa0;<a href="http://science.sciencemag.org/content/326/5958/1394">in the Miocene</a>, 10 to 14 million years ago, when seas were more than 100 feet higher than now.&#xa0;</p><p>In our 800,000-year record, it <a href="https://www.ncdc.noaa.gov/paleo-search/study/17975">took about 1,000 years</a> for CO2 levels to increase by 35 ppm. We're currently averaging an increase of more than 2 ppm per year, meaning that we could hit an average of 500 ppm within the next 45 years, if not sooner.</p><p>Humans have never had to breathe air like this. And it does not seem to be good for us.</p><p>Global temperature tracks very closely to atmospheric levels of CO2. The potential impacts of higher average temperatures include tens of thousands of deaths from heat waves, increased air pollution that leads to lung cancer and cardiovascular disease, higher rates of allergies and asthma, more extreme weather events, and the spread of diseases carried by ticks and mosquitoes - <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/tick-and-mosquito-diseases-tripled-cdc-2018-5">an effect we're already seeing</a>.</p><h3>Global annual temperature and CO2 levels, 1959-2016</h3><p>Higher levels of CO2 also exacerbate ozone pollution. One <a href="https://agupubs.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1029/2007GL031101/">2008 study found</a> that for every degree Celsius the temperature rises because of CO2 levels, ozone pollution can be expected to kill an additional 22,000 people via respiratory illness, asthma, and emphysema.&#xa0;<span style="font-weight: 400;">A recent study calculated that overall, air pollution already</span><a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/pollution-kills-more-people-than-wars-obesity-smoking-malnutrition-2017-10"> <span style="font-weight: 400;">kills 9 million people every year</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;">.</span></p><p>Other research has raised even more reasons for concern. The average CO2 level doesn't represent the air most of us breathe. Cities tend to have far more CO2 than average - and those levels rise even higher indoors. Some research indicates that <a href="https://ehp.niehs.nih.gov/1104789/">this may have a negative effect on human cognition</a> and decision-making.&#xa0;(There's a full list of possible ways climate change will affect human health on an <a href="https://19january2017snapshot.epa.gov/climate-impacts/climate-impacts-human-health_.html#ref1">archived EPA page</a>.)</p><p>President Obama's EPA <a href="https://19january2017snapshot.epa.gov/climatechange_.html">ruled in 2009 that CO2 was a pollutant</a> that needed to be regulated under the Clean Air Act, though the <a href="https://www.epa.gov/sites/production/files/signpost/cc.html">Trump administration is re-evaluating</a> that decision.</p><p></p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div><h2>Drowning in CO2</h2><p>The human health effects from CO2 increases are just one part of the bigger story here.</p><p>The change we've seen in CO2 levels recently has been much more rapid than the natural historical trends.&#xa0;Some experts think we're on <a href="https://www.scientificamerican.com/article/co2-levels-for-february-eclipsed-prehistoric-highs/">track to hit 550 ppm</a> by the end of the century, which would cause average global temperatures to rise 6 degrees Celsius. (For context, the increase in superstorms, rising sea levels, and spreading tick-borne disease that we're already seeing comes after a <a href="https://climate.nasa.gov/vital-signs/global-temperature/">0.9-degree rise</a>.)</p><p></p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div><p>Sea-level rise projections will only get bigger as&#xa0;CO2 levels will continue to climb.</p><p>Right now, carbon-dioxide emissions are&#xa0;<a href="http://trackingsdg7.esmap.org/data/files/download-documents/tracking_sdg7-the_energy_progress_report_full_report.pdf">still rising</a>. The goal set in the Paris agreement is to limit the global temperature increase to 2 degrees C or less. Heat waves kill tens of thousands of people and are responsible for more deaths in the US every year than the combined effects of hurricanes, lightning, tornadoes, earthquakes, and floods.</p><p>A study published last year in the <a href="https://www.nature.com/nclimate/journal/v7/n7/full/nclimate3322.html">journal Nature Climate Change</a> found that 30% of the world is already exposed to heat intense enough to kill people for 20 or more days each year. That level of intensity is defined using a heat index that takes into account temperature and humidity; above 104 degrees Farenheit (40 degrees C ), organs swell and cells start to break down.</p><p>In 2010, more than 10,000 people did in a Moscow heat wave. In 2003, <a href="http://iopscience.iop.org/article/10.1088/1748-9326/11/7/074006">some estimates say</a> a European summer heat wave killed up to 70,000.</p><p>CO2 concentrations in the atmosphere drive temperatures up. If they aren't brought under control and continue unchecked (we're currently on track for at least a 3 degree C rise), some <a href="https://gspp.berkeley.edu/assets/uploads/research/pdf/American_Climate_Prospectus.pdf">experts think</a> that 21 out of every 100,000 deaths in the US will be caused by heat.</p><h2>Pollution</h2><p>Higher levels of CO2 also exacerbate ozone and other pollution levels. A recent study found that air pollution <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/pollution-kills-more-people-than-wars-obesity-smoking-malnutrition-2017-10">kills 9 million people every year</a>. As temperature rises, that'll get worse.</p><p>One <a href="https://agupubs.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1029/2007GL031101/">2008 study found</a> that for every degree Celsius the temperature rises because of CO2 levels, ozone pollution can be expected to kill an additional 22,000 people via respiratory illness, asthma, and emphysema.</p><p>At the same time, non-ozone air pollution linked to warmer weather will increase rates of lung cancer, allergies and asthma, and cardiovascular disease.</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Getty Images</span></p><p class="caption">Disease-causing ticks are spreading in warmer weather.</p></div><p></p></div></div></p><h2>A plague of ticks and mosquitoes</h2><p>As the world gets warmer, ticks, mosquitoes, and other disease vectors are expanding their habitats and are able to spread disease for longer before cold weather shuts them down for a season.</p><p>We're already seeing this happen, as a recent CDC report revealed - <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/tick-and-mosquito-diseases-tripled-cdc-2018-5">diseases like Lyme disease, Dengue, and Zika spread by these pests tripled</a> in the US between 2004 and 2016.</p><p>We don't have good ways to control mosquito populations and we're terrible at stopping ticks. As a result, these conditions, known as vector-borne diseases, are expected to become bigger problems as CO2 cranks up the global thermostat.</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>REUTERS/Richard Carson</span></p><p class="caption">The floods from storms like Hurricane Harvey could be even worse in the future.</p></div><p></p></div></div></p><h2>Hurricanes and fires</h2><p>And of course, the larger-scale planetary changes caused by accumulating atmospheric CO2 are also expected to affect human health. As CO2 warms the planet, ice sheets are melting and seas are expanding, making cities more vulnerable to storms.</p><p>Higher temperatures are expected to lead to more intense storms with more rainfall, and as the past year demonstrated, that can have a huge effect on people. Last summer, the Caribbean and US Gulf Coast were hit by devastatingly strong hurricanes, one of which dumped an unprecedented amount of rain on Houston. Flooding caused by heavy monsoons in South Asia killed 1,200 people.</p><p>Wildfires are also getting worse as CO2 concentrations increase - something experts link to warmer temperatures. Thousands of buildings were razed by record-breaking wildfires in California last year. The amount of land burned in the US since 1984 is double what would have been expected without the effects of climate change in that period, <a href="http://www.pnas.org/content/113/42/11770.full">according to one study</a>. And the average wildfire season in the west now lasts <a href="http://wxshift.com/climate-change/climate-indicators/us-wildfires">at least two and a half months longer</a>than it did in the early 1970s, according to WXshift, a project of Climate Central.</p><h2>Time is running out</h2><p>When President Barack Obama's EPA <a href="https://19january2017snapshot.epa.gov/climatechange_.html">ruled in 2009 that CO2 was a pollutant</a> that needed to be regulated under the Clean Air Act, they listed health effects like these as a reason to consider CO2 concentrations dangerous. The <a href="https://www.epa.gov/sites/production/files/signpost/cc.html">Trump administration's is reevaluating</a> that ruling, but these facts are still listed on an <a href="https://19january2017snapshot.epa.gov/climate-impacts/climate-impacts-human-health_.html#ref1">archived Environmental Protection Agency page</a>.</p><p>We're already seeing many of these effects today. Without a rapid transition away from fossil fuels, most experts believe these consequences will become more and more severe.
