New Delhi: India's fossil fuel emissions are projected to rise by 4.6 per cent in 2024, while China could see a marginal rise of 0.2 per cent, according to new research by a group of international scientists. As the UN climate conference in Baku, Azerbaijan, discussed raising trillions of dollars to tackle <keyword id="19907392" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Climate-change" source="keywords">climate change</keyword>, the group of scientists known as the "Global Carbon Project" warned that emissions from fossil fuels -- the main driver of warming -- could hit a record 37.4 billion tonnes in 2024, up 0.8 percent from 2023 levels. This comes despite rapid growth in renewable energy and a landmark agreement at COP28 in Dubai last year to move away from fossil fuels. The "<keyword id="23948569" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Global-carbon-budget-2024" source="keywords">Global Carbon Budget 2024</keyword>" report said total global CO2 emissions are set to go up from 40.6 billion tons in 2023 to 41.6 billion metric tons in 2024, which is on course to become the warmest year on record. "The impacts of climate change are becoming increasingly dramatic, yet we still see no sign that burning of fossil fuels has peaked," Professor Pierre Friedlingstein of Exeter's Global Systems Institute, who led the study, said. The 'Global Carbon Project' team said India, the world's most populous country and fastest-growing major economy, may see its fossil fuel emissions rise by 4.6 percent. According to a UN report released last month, India's greenhouse gas emissions surged by 6.1 per cent in 2023, contributing to 8 per cent of the global total. However, the country's historical contribution to global CO2 emissions stands at only 3 per cent. India's per capita emissions remain low at 2.9 tons of CO2 equivalent (tCO2e), far below the global average of 6.6 tCO2e. India, the world's third-largest greenhouse gas emitter, has pledged to reach net zero emissions (balancing emissions with removals) by 2070 and aims to achieve 500 gigawatts of renewable energy capacity by 2030. China's emissions, which make up 32 per cent of the global total, are likely to increase slightly by 0.2 per cent, though there is a chance they could decline, according to the data released on Wednesday. Emissions from the United States and the European Union, which contribute 13 per cent and 7 per cent of the global total, are both set to decline, with drops of 0.6 per cent for the US and 3.8 per cent for the EU. Emissions from the rest of the world, which together account for 38 per cent of global emissions, could see a rise of 1.1 per cent. The researchers said that in 2024, coal emissions will likely increase by 0.2 per cent, oil by 0.9 per cent, and gas by 2.4 per cent, globally. Coal, oil, and gas contribute 41 per cent, 32 per cent, and 21 per cent of global fossil CO2 emissions, respectively. However, given the uncertainty in projections, it remains possible that coal emissions could decline in 2024, they said. The report also pointed out that emissions from international aviation and shipping, which account for 3 per cent of global emissions and are tracked separately from national or regional totals, are expected to rise by 7.8 per cent in 2024. However, these emissions will still be 3.5 per cent below the 2019 pre-pandemic levels. Globally, emissions from land-use changes, like deforestation, have dropped by 20 per cent over the past decade but are expected to rise in 2024. Permanent CO2 removal through reforestation and new forest planting now offsets about half of the emissions from permanent deforestation, they added. Technology-based CO2 removal accounts for only a tiny fraction -- around one-millionth -- of CO2 emissions from fossil fuels. The report said that emissions from fires in 2024 have been above the average since the beginning of the satellite record in 2003, particularly due to the extreme 2023 wildfire season in Canada (which continued into 2024) and severe drought in Brazil. Land and ocean carbon sinks continued to absorb around half of the total carbon emissions, despite being negatively affected by climate change.

On completion of the surgery, her appendix was also removed, according to the Commission's order last month. Immediately, on the next day, she complained of severe pain for which she was prescribed some pain killers and assured that it is post surgery discomfort and that it will get cured. She suffered acute stomach and back pain for several years and was also admitted in the same hospital twice later, the order noted. Padmavathi later approached another private hospital here in 2010 and during a scan, it was noticed that some foreign body existed in the abdominal and back portion of her body and it was suggested to her to get it (surgical needle) removed. She then underwent surgery and the 3.2 cm surgical needle was removed following which she approached the consumer forum with a complaint the following year. The forum noted that the complainant was aged about 32 years, when she underwent all these surgeries and removal of the surgical needle. "Definitely she suffered severe pain and inconvenience till removal of the surgical needle," the order stated. Hence, she is entitled to get "global compensation" of Rs five lakh and the insurance company (New India Assurance Company Limited) is directed to pay the amount while the two doctors are liable to pay litigation expenses of Rs 50,000 to the complainant, it further added.

AI can help with all that, Jesuthasan said.He said experimenting with AI was a good start but not a viable long-term strategy. More organizations are becoming deliberate in how they invest, he added. That might look like identifying well-defined areas where they will deploy AI so that everyone involved uses the technology.That's part of a mindset of continual learning and reinvention. Without that, he said, both the organization and its workers risk falling behind.Ultimately, Jesuthasan said, organizations should test and learn so that they can be judicious in how they deploy AI and see a return. This shift will require that leaders focus more on skills and less on the strictures of a particular job.It's a big shift."We're talking about the reversal of 140 years of learned behavior and organizational structure and processes to shift from jobs to skills as the currency for work," he said. "You can't eat the elephant in one bite."Jon Lester, the vice president of HR technology, data, and AI at IBM, told BI that business leaders should give experts in various parts of their organizations the time and space to learn what's possible — and to fail. He also said leaders should track the return on investment of their efforts and let their expert employees make decisions.Lester said it's insufficient to drop in the technology without giving other considerations."If we gave this technology without the learning, without the focus on process and experience, we just automated bad processes," he said.Another challenge with inserting AI into an organization is that it's often difficult to tell which skills workers possess and where they might need training.Asteri AI is a <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/healthcare-ai-startup-valuations-explode-after-downturn-2024-4">startup</a> that uses large language models to determine the skill levels of an employee base, identify gaps, and forecast what abilities might one day be needed.Julia Grace Samoylenko, Asteri's founder and CEO, told BI that skills are often hidden and difficult to capture and that they tend to change rapidly."We truly believe that AI is the key to solving this problem," she said.It's important for organizations to understand the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/ai-questions-consulting-firms-are-answering-for-clients-2024-6">capabilities of their workers</a>, in part, because it's not advisable — or even possible, in many cases — for <a target="_blank" class="" href=" https://www.businessinsider.com/ai-help-recruit-hire-employees-tech-women-bias-job-seeking-2024-1">employers to hire</a> their way out of a skills deficit, Samoylenko said. That can be especially the case with high-demand areas like AI."We strongly believe in the idea of investing in internal talent rather than bringing in external hires," she said.Aside from concerns about maintaining morale and institutional knowledge, training existing employees can also be easier on the budget. That might involve giving difficult feedback or managing someone who's being disruptive to a team, she said.Praxis Labs is focused on middle managers and potential strong performers because, Smith said, training on these types of interpersonal skills is often concentrated among C-suite leaders."They often have executive coaches," she said. "They're doing role-plays. They're getting coaching on how to navigate these moments all the time." By using AI, Smith said, that type of training can be scaled to reach more workers.Managers can give oral or written feedback in simulations, and the AI can interject to point out slipups."Midconversation, if you haven't asked an open-ended question, we might nudge you to do that because you may not fully understand the situation," she said. "And asking questions is a powerful skill."Smith said the benefits of training could extend beyond the knowledge itself. She said clients had reported managers and employees feeling more engaged. And if the training is successful, it's more likely to stick, Smith added."You're more likely to change your behavior when you're confident about what you've just practiced and that skill you've just built," she said.Organizations are also looking to use <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/ai-career-advice-coach-gen-z-workers-get-ahead-2024-2">AI to empower workers</a> in other ways.Nathalie Scardino, Salesforce's chief people officer, told BI that the company's philosophy is that having AI tools at hand helps workers learn and improve their skills because the tech becomes incorporated into their daily workflow."You're bringing them along in the continued learning experience," she said.Salesforce has pumped out more than 50 AI applications to help its workers do their jobs in new ways, Scardino said. The goal is to make sure workers continue to learn and experiment."Everyone should be able to work with AI and understand the use cases behind the advantages of working with AI," she said.Charlotte Relyea, a senior partner at McKinsey &amp; Co., believes that leaders need to plan now so they can better forecast the abilities workers will need. Given the importance of this task, she said, the process will likely involve not only the head of HR but also the CEO."It's going to require real investment in upskilling and reskilling," she told BI. "So organizations need to be prepared for that."Relyea said leaders should prioritize where they focus most of their efforts on building skills. So it's probably more worth it to train a team with low turnover than one that's always seeing new faces.Leaders need to think about this as a transformation — what she described as "painting the picture of the future."In a recent <a target="_blank" href="https://www.mckinsey.com/capabilities/people-and-organizational-performance/our-insights/gen-ais-next-inflection-point-from-employee-experimentation-to-organizational-transformation">McKinsey survey</a>, nine in 10 workers said AI tools could improve their work experience. She's pushing to give the internal-medicine residents she oversees access to the technology as well so that they don't get burned out by administrative tasks and can better focus on patients' needs. She said in the 18 years she's been a doctor, no other tool has changed her practice to this degree."I didn't know it would be this groundbreaking," Scalise said. "I'm ecstatic that it's been so effective."

These blooms, while initially appearing productive, consume vast amounts of oxygen as they decompose, creating oxygen-depleted dead zones. Dr Rose, lead author of the study from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, emphasises the urgency of addressing this issue. Adding aquatic deoxygenation to the list of planetary boundaries will focus global efforts on monitoring, research, and policy changes to protect our vital aquatic ecosystems and, in turn, human society. Oxygen is disappearing from Earth’s water; this endangers marine life and human society!

With millions of people across five continents experiencing scorching heat last month, the European Union's (EU) climate agency, Copernicus <keyword id="19907392" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="climate-change" source="keywords">Climate Change</keyword> Service (C3S), confirmed on Monday that June was the warmest on record. It also marked the 12th consecutive month of <keyword id="20524196" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="global-temperatures" source="keywords">global temperatures</keyword> reaching <keyword id="22325521" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="1-5-degrees-Celsius" source="keywords">1.5 degrees Celsius</keyword> above the pre-industrial average. According to scientists at C3S, every month since June last year has been the warmest such month on record. In January, the world completed an entire year with the mean surface air temperature exceeding the 1.5-degree Celsius threshold. June was the 12th consecutive month with monthly average temperatures above the 1850-1900 pre-industrial average. At the 2015 UN climate talks in Paris, world leaders committed to limiting the global average temperature rise to 1.5 degrees Celsius above the pre-industrial period to avoid the worst impacts of climate change. However, a permanent breach of the 1.5-degree Celsius limit specified in the <keyword id="20104670" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Paris-Agreement" source="keywords">Paris Agreement</keyword> refers to long-term warming over a 20 or 30-year period. Earth's global surface temperature has already increased by around 1.2 degrees Celsius compared to the average in 1850-1900 due to the rapidly-increasing concentration of <keyword id="20649149" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="greenhouse-gases" source="keywords">greenhouse gases</keyword> -- primarily carbon dioxide and methane -- in the atmosphere. This warming is considered to be the reason behind record droughts, wildfires and floods worldwide. According to new data, June 2024 was the warmest on record, with an average surface air temperature of 16.66 degrees Celsius, 0.67 degrees Celsius above the 1991-2020 average for the month and 0.14 degrees Celsius above the previous high set in June 2023. "The month was 1.5 degrees Celsius above the estimated June average for 1850-1900, the designated pre-industrial reference period, making it the 12th consecutive month to reach or break the 1.5-degree threshold," C3S said in a statement. It was also the 13th consecutive month of <keyword id="21477127" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="record-high-temperatures" source="keywords">record-high temperatures</keyword>, a result of the combined effect of the 2023-24 El Nino event and human-caused climate change. While unusual, a similar streak of monthly global temperature records happened previously in 2015-16. "This is more than a statistical oddity and highlights a large and continuing shift in our climate. Even if this specific streak of extremes ends at some point, we are bound to see new records being broken as the climate continues to warm. This is inevitable, unless we stop adding greenhouse gases into the atmosphere and the oceans," said Carlo Buontempo, the director of C3S. The European climate agency said the global average temperature for the last 12 months (July 2023-June 2024) is the highest on record, at 0.76 degrees Celsius above the 1991-2020 average and 1.64 degrees Celsius above the 1850-1900 pre-industrial average. The world's sea surface in June was also the highest ever recorded for the month. Several countries experienced record-breaking heat and devastating floods and storms in June. According to an analysis by Climate Central, an independent group of scientists and communicators based in the United States, more than 60 per cent of the world population faced extreme heat that was made at least three times more likely by climate change during June 16-24. Climate Central said the blistering heat in June impacted 619 million (61.9 crore) people in India, 579 million (57.9 crore) in China, 231 million (23.1 crore) in Indonesia, 206 million (20.6 crore) in Nigeria, 176 million (17.6 crore) in Brazil, 171 million (17.1 crore) in Bangladesh, 165 million (16.5 crore) in the US, 152 million (15.2 crore) in Europe, 123 million (12.3 crore) in Mexico, 121 million (12.1 crore) in Ethiopia and 103 million (10.3 crore) in Egypt. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), northwest India recorded its warmest June since 1901. India, which experienced one of its hottest and longest heatwaves, recorded more than 40,000 suspected heatstroke cases and over 100 heat-related deaths. The intense heat overwhelmed the water supply system and power grids, with Delhi grappling with a severe water crisis. According to the IMD, 11 states recorded 20 to 38 heatwave days -- up to four times the usual number of such days -- during the April-to-June period. The mercury breached 50 degrees Celsius in parts of Rajasthan, with night temperatures hovering around 35 degrees Celsius in many places. Temperatures were most above average over eastern Canada, the western United States and Mexico, Brazil, northern Siberia, the Middle East, northern Africa, and western Antarctica. Nearly half (49.4%) of <keyword id="6357805" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="indian" source="Orion">Indian</keyword> adults are failing to meet the recommended levels of <keyword id="20053428" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="physical-activity" source="keywords">physical activity</keyword> according to the World Health Organization (<keyword id="19895006" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="WHO" source="keywords">WHO</keyword>). This lack of movement is a ticking time bomb, putting millions at risk of chronic diseases like heart disease, stroke, diabetes, dementia and some cancers. Globally, nearly a third of adults (1.8 billion people) are failing to meet activity recommendations but India finds itself at the forefront of this growing public health concern. India ranks 12th globally for <keyword id="702971" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="physical-inactivity" source="Orion">physical inactivity</keyword>. The study highlights that the worrying prevalence of inactivity has more than doubled since 2000. India is followed closely by countries like Pakistan, where 45.7% of the people are physically inactive. This is in stark contrast to neighbouring countries like Bhutan (9.9%) and Nepal (8.2%) where activity levels are considerably higher. Still, the highest inactivity rates are concentrated in South Asia (45%) and the high-income Asia-Pacific region (48%). Another troubling trend that the researchers uncovered was the <keyword id="20646065" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="gender-gap" source="keywords">gender gap</keyword> in physical activity among men and women. In India, women (57%) were more physically inactive than men (42%) as of 2022. These trends, if left unchecked, could lead to a global healthcare burden of $300 billion over the next decade. Fortunately, there's a readily available solution - get moving! The WHO recommends at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity exercise or 75 minutes of vigorous exercise per week for adults. These seemingly simple steps can significantly reduce the risk of numerous chronic diseases. The good news? Physical activity doesn't have to be complicated. Walking, cycling, housework, and even playing can all contribute to a healthier lifestyle. The message from this report is clear: India faces a looming inactivity crisis. Despite an increase in energy efficiency investment and lower energy intensity, the building and construction sector's energy consumption and <keyword id="85568" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="co2-emissions" source="Orion">CO2 emissions</keyword> have rebounded from the Covid-19 pandemic to an all-time high, a new report finds. Released at the latest round of the UN COP27 climate summit in Egypt, the 2022 Global Status Report for Buildings and Construction finds that the sector accounted for over 34 per cent of energy demand and around 37 per cent of energy and process-related <keyword id="49838" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="co2" source="Orion">CO2</keyword> emissions in 2021. The sector's operational energy-related CO2 emissions reached 10 gigatonnes of CO2 equivalent -- 5 per cent over 2020 levels and 2 per cent over the pre-pandemic peak in 2019. In 2021, operational energy demand for heating, cooling, lighting and equipment in buildings increased by around four per cent from 2020 and three per cent from 2019. This, according to the report from the <keyword id="15468006" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="global-alliance-for-buildings-and-construction" source="Orion">Global Alliance for Buildings and Construction</keyword> (GlobalABC), means the gap between the climate performance of the sector and the 2050 decarbonization pathway is widening. "Years of warnings about the impacts of climate change have become a reality,a said <keyword id="2974898" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="inger-andersen" source="Orion">Inger Andersen</keyword>, Executive Director of the <keyword id="7285" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="un-environment-programme" source="Orion">UN Environment Programme</keyword> (<keyword id="6491230" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="unep" source="Orion">UNEP</keyword>). "If we do not rapidly cut emissions in line with the Paris Agreement, we will be in deeper trouble." "The buildings sector represents 40 per cent of <keyword id="28249" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="europe" source="Orion">Europe</keyword>'s energy demand, 80 per cent of it from fossil fuels. This makes the sector an area for immediate action, investment, and policies to promote short and long-term energy security." Decarbonizing the buildings sector by 2050 is critical to delivering these cuts. To reduce overall emissions, the sector must improve building energy performance, decrease building materials' carbon footprint, multiply policy commitments alongside action and increase investment in energy efficiency. The sector's emissions intensity in kilogrammes of CO2 per square metre dropped from 43 in 2015 to 40 in 2021. Energy intensity in kilowatts per hour per square metre slightly decreased, from 153 in 2015 to 152 in 2021. Investments in building energy efficiency have gone up by unprecedented levels, rising by 16 per cent in 2021 over 2020 levels to $237 billion. However, growth is outpacing efforts on energy efficiency and reducing energy intensity. The increase in global gross floor area between 2015 and 2021 is the equivalent to the total land area covered in buildings in Germany, France, Italy and the Netherlands; if it were built on one level, at around 24,000 sq.km. The report says that investments in energy efficiency must be sustained in the face of growing crises -- such as the war in Ukraine and the ensuing energy crisis, and the cost-of-living crisis -- to reduce energy demand, avoiding CO2 emissions and dampen energy cost volatility. The buildings sector represents 40 per cent of Europe's energy demand, 80 per cent of it from fossil fuels. This makes the sector an area for immediate action, investment and policies to promote short and long-term energy security. The report shows that the sector can still change. For example, rising fossil fuel costs due to the war in Ukraine and the cost-of-living crisis are providing incentives to invest in energy efficiency -- although the erosion of purchasing power and the impact of labour and materials may slow investment. "The solution may lie in governments directing relief towards low and zero-carbon building investment activities through financial and non-financial incentives," Andersen added.
