<ul><li>Glance will now have access to Roposo’s regional content creators and 42 million users</li><li>Roposo, founded by three IIT Delhi alumni, offers a TV-like interface that allows users to watch videos in 10 languages and across 24 channels that are powered by a pan-India network of regional influencers. </li><li>Glance has more than 60 million daily active users (DAUs) as of November 2019, up from 50 million DAUs in September 2019. </li></ul>Glance has acquired Roposo, a Tiger Global and Bertelsmann backed short-video platform to access its extensive network of professionals, regional content creators and more than 42 million users. The acquisition also gives Glance ownership of Roposo’s video technology, platform and brand. <br /><br />Roposo, founded by three IIT Delhi alumni, offers a TV-like interface that allows users to watch videos in 10 languages and across 24 channels that are powered by a pan-India network of regional influencers. The acquisition of the platform will enable Glance to tap into Roposo’s regional influencers and create professional vernacular, video content in line with Glance’s editorial guidelines for the lock screen. <br /><br />Nearly 60% of Glance users in India belong to Tier 2 and Tier 3 cities, and spend an average of 22 minutes per day consuming content in a language of their choice. Glance currently provides content in 4 languages that include Hindi, Tamil and Telugu, besides English. <br /><br />“Most of India wants high quality video content in vernacular since only 10% of India speaks English,” said Naveen Tewari, Founder and CEO at InMobi Group. “Glance’s focus on 3Vs - video content across a variety of topics in vernacular - has already made it India’s fastest growing content platform. This acquisition will enable Glance to bring to the fore content created by Roposo’s large vernacular influencer community.”<br /><br />Glance, which had announced an investment of $45 million from Mithril Capital in September 2019, has been growing rapidly since its first shipment in Q2 2018. <ul class="summary-list"><li><keyword id="6354616" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="Twitter">Twitter</keyword> has been in a standoff in <keyword id="3658" type="COUNTRY" weightage="60" keywordseo="India">India</keyword> over censoring accounts amid huge anti-government protests.</li><li><keyword id="6354477" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Narendra-Modi">Narendra Modi</keyword>'s Government has backed <keyword id="3518161" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="koo">Koo</keyword>, an app so similar to Twitter it even has a bird logo.</li><li>The "free expression" app, which has been accused of hosting hate speech, doesn't moderate content.</li></ul><p><a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/india-government-attack-us-celebrities-backing-farmer-protests-burn-effigies-2021-2" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">India's farmers' protests</a> put Twitter in a censorship standoff with the Indian Government, which reacted by backing "Koo", the app mimics tweets and says it has no plans to moderate its content.</p><p>Koo is just 10 months old. But <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-twitters-india-standoff-dragged-in-journalists-and-activists-2021-2">Twitter's refusal to block accounts supporting the protests outside Delhi </a>- where tens of thousands farmers have come to global attention in their bitter, at times violent, demonstrations against new agriculture laws - has been its making.</p><p>Prime Minister Narendra Modi's ministers were among those encouraging people in the world's second-fastest growing internet economy to switch to Koo. It crossed more than 4.1 million downloads in two weeks in February and has secured $4.1 million in funding.</p><p>Celebrities, politicians, and right-wing publications are now "Kooing". Even the yellow bird logo and the name - Koo is a bird's sound in Hindi - emphasize its desire to challenge Twitter. Some even cheekily used Tweets to announce their new Koo profiles.</p><p>"I am now on Koo," says <a href="https://twitter.com/PiyushGoyal/status/1359058583934013442">the pinned tweet</a> of Piyush Goyal, India's minister of railways, commerce, and industry who has more than 9.5 million followers on Twitter. "Connect with me on this Indian micro-blogging platform for real-time, exciting, and exclusive updates."</p><p>According to mobile analytics firm Sensor Tower, Koo's downloads soared by 159.9% on February 9, the day Goyal endorsed it.</p><p>This was on top of a 186.8% jump in downloads the previous day, triggered when Twitter published <a href="https://help.twitter.com/en/rules-and-policies/tweet-withheld-by-country">a defiant response</a> to the government.</p><div type="image" title="Koo account" height="1200" width="1696" msid="81278576" hostid="261"></div><p>"We strongly believe that the open and free exchange of information has a positive global impact," Twitter wrote, "and that the Tweets must continue to flow." </p><p>The surge put Koo at the top of the app charts. Koo was founded in the southern city of Bangalore by Aprameya Radhakrishna, who sold his cab-hailing startup for $200 million to Uber's biggest rival in India, and Mayank Bidawatka, a serial entrepreneur.</p><p>At first glance, the similarities with Twitter are remarkable. Koo lets you follow people, read updates in a reverse-chronological feed, add and track hashtags, post a "Koo" in up to 350 characters, attach media, and respond to and like other people's Koos.</p><p>But Koo has features, unavailable on Twitter, that are tailored to the Indian market. it is compatible with a handful of Indian languages and lets people filter out content by their chosen language, which helps in a country where only 10% of the population speaks English.</p><div type="image" title="Koo as it appears in the Google Play Store" height="1120" width="1434" msid="81278578" hostid="261"></div><p>It also has a dedicated button for forwarding "Koos" to WhatsApp, India's most popular messaging app.</p><p>But arguably what truly sets this social network apart is its lack of content moderation. Its homepage invites people to "join India's best minds that speak their mind".</p><p>Its founders say they won't govern their network the way the likes of Twitter and Facebook currently struggle to do. Instead, when Koo discovers any post that can be deemed unlawful, it will hand it over to the government for action.</p><p>"We don't govern. Why should we govern? It's a free-expression platform," <a href="https://restofworld.org/2021/how-koo-became-a-right-wing-darling-in-india/">Radhakrishna recently said</a>, "We're not the ones to take action. There's an elected government. Irrespective of who runs the government in the future ... If it's going to lead to violence, we'll cooperate with the government."</p><p>The Indian government meanwhile has pulled out all the stops to make Twitter fall in line, with Koo effectively becoming a weapon in the fight. Twitter has since agreed to comply partially with India's banning order, suspending more than 500 accounts. </p><p>Challenging Twitter is no easy feat - it has 340 million users worldwide. In late November, another Twitter-esque app called Tooter got a lot of attention. Its brash "About" page likened Twitter's dominance in India to the British Empire in the days before independence. But the absence of diverse voices meant its early adopters soon left.</p><div type="image" title="Koo homepage" height="1124" width="1800" msid="81278580" hostid="261"></div><p>Modi's government's endorsement of Koo has made it particularly inviting to India's right-wing and supporters of the governing party.</p><p>Nikhil Pahwa, a digital rights activist and founder of tech policy publication MediaNama, posted on Koo about the internet shutdowns authorities imposed to disrupt the protests and was soon flooded with "hateful comments and responses," he told Insider. </p><p>Pahwa said he found Koo's approach to moderating "extremely problematic." "To allow any platform that just gives a wholesale licence to the government to censor our speech is not a platform worth being on," he said. </p><p>This has led many to draw parallels between Koo and <keyword id="9465142" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="parler">Parler</keyword>, a US-based "free-speech social network" that grew after Twitter began censoring and <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/trump-twitter-ban-wont-be-lifted-if-runs-president-again-2021-2">eventually banned former President Donald Trump</a>.</p><p>Radhakrishna has dismissed the comparison, telling tech blog Rest Of World that Parler was a "pro-Trump thing", adding, "We are existing today irrespective of whether Twitter gets into trouble or not, irrespective of one ideology being there or not. We exist because we want to give a voice to every Indian."</p><p>But while <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/parler-website-is-back-online-2021-1">Parler has struggled</a>, Koo might thrive under India's current administration. </p><p>Modi has made the "Make in India" campaign his party's centerpiece and has rolled out policies that promote domestic manufacturing and Indian startups.</p><p>The government is reportedly developing a range of homegrown apps aimed at eventually replacing Western services like WhatsApp, Zoom, and of course, Twitter.</p><p>China has already gone down this road with apps such as TikTok and WeChat. Will India follow? </p><p>"I know that the Indian government has China envy," Pahwa said. "They want to exercise the kind of control that the Chinese government does over speech and over technology in its country.</p><p> "But I sure hope India doesn't become like that."</p><p>Koo did not respond to a request for comment from Insider.</p>

In India, the SFV user base grew 3.5 times and 12 times in total time spent by all users over the past two years. In 2020 alone, more than 200 million Indians watched SFVs at least once. And active users spent up to 45 minutes a day only on SFV platforms. There was a 60% increase in consumption of SFV during the lockdown period (April-June) as compared to January-March the same year. At present, there are more than 200 million SFV users in India. <br /><br />India’s SFV user base has mostly been men (70%-75%) from tier 2 cities and smaller towns while women take up 25%-30%. This app has over 200 million downloads with 9-12 million creators and 17 average daily minutes. <br /><br />Dailyhunt’s Josh and Glance’s Roposo have over 150 million and 100 million downloads, respectively, and investors like Google, Microsoft and InMobi. An interesting player here is Xiaomi’s Zili that comes pre-installed on Xiaomi smartphones. The new phones come with upgrades under the hood, in the camera department, display and more. <br /><br />The Realme 9 Pro+ 5G, in particular, is the company’s mid-range offering. It comes with a 90Hz display, a 50-megapixel camera setup, 5G, MediaTek Dimensity 920 processor, and up to 60W fast charging support. We’ve been using the Realme 9 Pro+ 5G smartphone for some time and here’s our detailed review of the phone.<br /><br /><strong>Price, availability<br /></strong><br />The Realme 9 Pro+ 5G comes in three variants with the base 6GB + 128GB variant priced at ₹24,999. The 8GB + 128GB and the 8GB + 256GB variants are priced at ₹ 28,999, respectively. The smartphone will go on sale on February 21 at 12pm via Flipkart, Realme’s official website, and mainline channels.<br /><br />In terms of specifications and pricing, the Realme 9 Pro+ 5G would compete with phones like the OnePlus Nord CE 5G and the Xiaomi 11i 5G. <br /><br /><strong>Design, form factor</strong><br /><br />The Realme 9 Pro+ 5G comes in three colour options - Midnight Black, Aurora Green and Sunrise Blue. The Sunrise Blue variant that we received has a glittery design that shimmers a lot and while it looks pretty, we’re not sure if it will be appealing to everyone. The design isn’t subtle at all and it doesn’t try to do so either. It’s very reflective with different colours gleaming out depending on the lighting conditions. The Midnight Black variant can be an option for those who don’t want a design that stands out.<br /><br />The phone otherwise has a slim and tall body and is very light to hold. Since it’s tall it fits quite well in your hand and even one-handed use is possible most of the time. The power and volume buttons are very thin though and might feel a little flimsy. They do take some time to get used to. It does have a 90Hz refresh rate so you get a smooth scrolling effect when using the phone. <br /><br /><strong>Cameras</strong><br /><br />On the Realme 9 Pro+, you get a triple camera setup featuring a 50-megapixel primary sensor, an 8-megapixel ultra wide angle lens and a 2-megapixel macro camera. For selfies, there’s a 16-megapixel front camera. With this phone, you can get really good photos, especially in daylight. The phone has a separate 50-megapixel camera mode that you’ll have to switch to and this one brings better colour clarity and detail in photos. You can get a nice silhouette background with visible stars but don’t expect a nice shot of the moon. The front camera is a 16-megapixel sensor for selfies which turn out way too beautified despite keeping all settings at neutral. It’s something that may not appeal to those who want a more natural look without the artificial touchup.<br />      <div type="image" title="realme macro camera" msid="89631353" hostid="261" caption="&amp;lt;p&amp;gt;Realme 9 Pro+ 5G has a 2-megapixel macro camera.&amp;lt;/p&amp;gt;"></div><br />We also tried out video recording on the Realme 9 Pro+ 5G and we found it to be quite impressive. The phone shoots at 30 fps (frames per second) by default but you can switch to 60 fps if there’s a lot going on that you want to capture. Even at 30 fps, the videos turn out stable and not shaky. While we didn’t do anything adventurous the phone delivers good results if you’re shooting videos just moving around. The audio is also captured accurately of each person talking and background sounds too. <br /><br /><strong>Performance, battery life</strong><br /><br />The battery life and fast charging of the Realme 9 Pro+ is quite impressive. You can use the phone for around a day and a half with regular use like taking calls, using social media apps, alongwith a little bit of streaming and gaming. When it comes to intensive gaming for about an hour the battery drops around 20 per cent. <br /><br />But the phone comes with a SuperDart 60W fast charger which can easily get the phone from 0 to 100 per cent in less than an hour. The fast charging makes it great for situations when you don’t have enough time to charge the phone as it can get up to 30 per cent of power in around 15 minutes.<br /><br />We also played Battlegrounds Mobile India (BGMI) on this phone and the experience was great. Even with graphics set at the highest setting (60 fps), the game ran smoothly with no lags. The phone also doesn’t heat much despite playing for almost an hour.<br /><br />The overall performance of the phone was also good as we did not face any issues while shuffling through apps, watching videos or streaming. In terms of software, the Realme 9 Pro+ ships with realme UI 3.0 based on Android 12. While you do get a very close experience to stock Android, the phone is still cluttered with third-party apps. It also comes with Glance pre-installed for lock screen wallpapers so if you want a clean phone you would have to do a lot of cleaning. But otherwise brownie points for shipping the phone with the latest Android OS.<br /><br />The smartphone’s great for watching videos since it has a tall display so if you’re someone who loves binge watching shows and movies then this phone will not disappoint you. The speakers are also quite loud and you get Dolby Atmos for that surround sound feel. We also did not face any issues when using the phone for calls and the audio was quite clear for the other party. <br /><br />There’s also this heart rate monitoring sensor on the Realme 9 Pro+ that’s embedded in the in-display fingerprint sensor. You can use it to measure your heart rate and see a record of heart rate measurements. Realme however clarifies that this isn’t a medical device and rightly so. But this feature can be helpful to anyone who wants to keep a regular check of their heart rate. <br /><br /><strong>Verdict</strong><br /><br />The Realme 9 Pro+ offers a good all-round experience even if there are very few shortcomings in some areas. It however gets the important bits right which is the camera, speed and battery life. If you want a good mid-range smartphone delivering on all the key parts then we would definitely recommend the Realme 9 Pro+. The launch comes shortly after the company announced it reached 40 million shipments on its ‘Number series’ which includes smartphones from Realme 1 to Realme 8. The latest Realme 9i comes packed with a flashy design, promising cameras, a smooth display and fast charging.<br /><cmsannotation type="cmsannotation" annotationid="Price and availability" comment="subhead" text="Price and availability"><span data-til="noop">Price and availability</span></cmsannotation><br />The Realme 9i starts at ₹13,999 for the base model with 4GB RAM and 64GB storage. Its other model with 6GB RAM and 128GB storage is priced at ₹15,999. The smartphone will go on an early sale on January 22 via realme.com and Flipkart, and the first sale will take place on January 25. The phone has a 50-megapixel primary camera along with a 2-megapixel portrait and macro camera. For selfies, you get a 16-megapixel front camera. And you also get choices on top of that. With the Realme 9i, you get a flashy back in colours of blue and black and a “prism” effect. We got the Prism Blue variant of the Realme 9i which looks sleek and stylish. The display is big though with a 6.6-inch screen which makes it a great option for watching movies, videos and playing games too. There’s also a 3.5mm headphone jack and dual stereo speakers on the phone. <br /><br />The power button is located on the right side of the phone and it also doubles as a fingerprint sensor. The volume buttons are on the left side but they’re very thin with a very plasticky feel. The Realme 9i’s rear panel tends to catch quite a bit of fingerprint smudges. Speaking of which, the Realme 9i has a 6.6-inch FHD+ display with a 90Hz refresh rate. You can choose between 60Hz and 90Hz refresh rates or set it to auto. It also lets you choose the colour temperature of the display. <br /><br />There’s also a 16-megapixel front camera in a punch-hole design which takes up very little space and you get more room for the display.<br /><br /><div type="image" title="nft (84)" msid="88968932" hostid="261" caption="&amp;lt;p&amp;gt;The smartphone ships with Android 11-based realme UI 2.0.&amp;lt;/p&amp;gt;"></div><br />The Realme 9i ships with realme UI 2.0 that’s based on Android 11. The UI will feel familiar to those who have used Realme phones before with the off-white background in the app drawer and notification panel. The phone has its fair share of preinstalled apps like Spotify, Snapchat, Prime Video, and Booking.com. It also has Glance for lockscreen wallpapers that you will have to manually sign up for. <br /><br />But overall, the UI feels very less cluttered in comparison to others like Samsung. Setting up the phone also takes only a few steps and you can customise it later according to your preferences.<br /><br />Our brief usage with the phone went smooth as expected and the phone has all the major requirements for its price. So in a nutshell, you get a good looking and stylish design with a tall display, headphone jack, and stereo speakers. How the phone performs, in the long run, is something we’ll talk about later in our detailed review of the Realme 9i. <br /><br />
