"intentionally and blatantly stymied the process at every possible juncture."</p><p>According to the complaint, Lisa Frank Inc. did so by "refusing" to provide artwork and timely approvals and disapproving sample products.</p><p>Glamour Dolls also said in its complaint that over the course of its relationship to Lisa Frank Inc., the brand made false statements about Glamour Dolls and "forced early payment" of royalties Lisa Frank Inc. had not yet earned so that it could deceitfully cancel its contract with the indie brand.</p><p>"As a result of such unlawful refusal, GDI [Glamour Dolls Inc.] was deprived of the ability to 'use and sell' the vast majority of the Licensed Products for which it had paid royalties," the complaint says. "In effect, defendants reaped the significant monetary benefits of the license agreements while intentionally and systematically preventing GDI from receiving the same."</p><p>After doing so, according to the complaint, Lisa Frank Inc. shared "false and disparaging accusations and statements" with the press, and named Insider specifically. </p><p>In November 2020, Insider spoke with numerous <a href="https://www.insider.com/lisa-frank-morphe-makeup-collection-backlash-2020-11">beauty fans who said they were upset to learn that Lisa Frank had collaborated with Morphe on a makeup line</a> after they previously backed the Glamour Dolls Kickstarter campaign and never received makeup or refunds.</p><p>While some fans told Insider they were upset with Glamour Dolls, the majority said they were mostly disappointed in Lisa Frank Inc., and felt as though the brand was ignoring what happened with its original, failed makeup line. One beauty fan told Insider that she felt Lisa Frank Inc. "Ultimately, we believe justice will be served and are excited to refocus on our mission of creating fun, vegan, cruelty-free products and experiences for customers all over the world."</p><p>Previously in November 2020, representatives for Lisa Frank Inc. said in a statement emailed to Insider that Glamour Dolls "completely failed" to live up to its agreement. </p><p>"After many months of pushing Glamour Dolls to live up to its contractual obligations and deliver products - to our fans and retailers that ordered products - Lisa Frank Inc. reached the point of exasperation, terminated the agreement with Glamour Dolls, and contacted the Federal Government," the statement said. "To say we are disappointed by the events that transpired as a result of this license is an understatement."</p><p>According to the new complaint from Glamour Dolls, the above statement labeled the indie brand as a "corrupt, untrustworthy and incompetent business with substandard products," and caused the company "tremendous injury to its business reputation."</p><p>Glamour Dolls is now seeking "compensation for direct harm, punitive damages, and disgorgement of defendants' profits," according to the complaint, though it's unclear how much money exactly the company is seeking.</p>

An indie beauty brand is suing Lisa Frank after a failed makeup collaboration and years-long feud

I have a channel on YouTube called Doe Deer Wonderland where I do <keyword id="251461" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Doll">doll</keyword> restorations. This is a 1964 Ponytail Swirl <keyword id="52473" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Barbie">Barbie</keyword>. They had a limited run of about two years. They were basically the last dolls to represent '50s glamour. It makes them really valuable to collectors. The hair is basically a mess. It's frizzy. The paint has basically chipped away. She has a bald spot, which I'm going to be filling in.</p><p>So, first I'm going to wash the doll using dishwashing soap and a toothbrush. Then I'm going to put fabric conditioner in her hair and comb it through. I use just a normal hairbrush, and then I go over it with a fine comb once all the kinks are out. Next, I'm going to reroot the doll using nylon hair. That's a specific tool for doll rerooting. So it's a needle that's been cut. So I take the hank of hair, cut it to the length that I need, then I put it around my finger, and using the rerooting tool I just pick up small sections and insert them into the doll's head. Then I'm going to glue the hair in place. You glue it on the inside of the head so that the hair doesn't come out when you brush it or work with it.</p><p>Then I boil the hair to keep it down while I work on it. Boiling water basically calms the hair fibers and makes sure they lay in the position that you want them to. I am giving her a haircut and putting her hair in rollers. The hair that you order is not the correct length. You're always going to have some overhang, so you're just going to want to cut that to match the doll's length. I just wrap the sections with aluminum foil and then roll them around the rollers. The rollers I made myself using Fimo clay.</p><p>I go over her legs with a sandpaper block to address the scratches. As her face has become a bit green, I'm going to counteract that using soft pastels with no primer. The vinyl is basically like human skin. It absorbs anything you put on it. I go over it using a mixture of red and yellow and orange. Then I'm repainting her face using acrylic paint. The eyeliner is chipped, so there's pieces of it missing. The lips have faded to a white, which is common for dolls like this. I use a thin paintbrush so I can detail all the makeup. These are specifically made for detail work. Then I apply a semiglossy varnish on the paint job. The varnish that I use, it just helps preserve the paint that I applied, and it gives it a semiglossy finish.</p><p>Her nails are faded, and I need to go over them to make them decent again. The original hairstyle of the doll was basically a low ponytail with sideswept bangs and a flip around the ponytail. I brush out her hair. I am going to tie the hair in the back in a low ponytail. Then I use hair mousse to keep the hair in place. And I hide the elastic band with a strand of hair. Then I set the curl around my finger using hair mousse.</p>

At the risk of sounding lookist, your <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/5-types-of-photos-you-should-never-use-on-linkedin-2018-3">picture matters</a>. </p><p>So when I saw <a href="https://www.tiktok.com/@chillybubble98/video/7213774756733111594?_r=1&amp;_t=8bFyRD97yuo" target="_blank" rel="noopener">this TikTok</a> about an AI service that promises low-cost, studio-quality headshots, I was intrigued. Some of the pictures were terrible — <a href="https://www.buzzfeednews.com/article/pranavdixit/ai-generated-art-hands-fingers-messed-up" target="_blank" rel="noopener">extra hands</a>! <a href="https://www.newyorker.com/culture/rabbit-holes/the-uncanny-failures-of-ai-generated-hands" target="_blank" rel="noopener">sausage fingers</a>! <a href="https://affiliate.insider.com?h=6f3d59de427020b13af96d56dfb8e69268edaea5a926b79cd5ad2c4bec1347ba&amp;postID=6439652d1aaf4e2da42e19cd&amp;site=bi&amp;u=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.linkedin.com%2Fpulse%2Fdead-eyes-deepfakes-jonathan-hanst-%2F" target="_blank" rel="noopener">dead eyes</a>! — but there were plenty of winners, too. It was worth a shot.</p><p>Because when all is said and done, I'm just a mildly vain, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/bare-minimum-monday-tiktok-working-mom-genx-40s-2023-3">40-something working mom</a> who wants to look halfway decent on LinkedIn. </p><p>Well, dear reader, I got my wish and then some. Some pictures offered a jolt of aspirational self-esteem, as in, "Wow, I kinda sorta look like that? Cool!" While others were comically awful or just plain hilarious.</p><h2><strong>Professional headshots from the comfort of home</strong></h2><p>I used <a href="https://submit.tryitonai.com/login" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Try it on.ai</a>, which gets points for user-friendliness. You create an online account, pay $17, and then upload at least 10 pictures of yourself, though the platform says that more pics are preferable — and voilà! A mere 72 hours later, you get 100 headshots.</p><p>Choosing the pictures to upload was deceptively time-consuming. Then again, getting dolled up and traveling to and from a studio would take hours. Sitting on my couch and scrolling through my phone's photo library wasn't too bad, all things being equal.</p><p>The site recommends uploading close-ups taken from the chest up. You can't be wearing a hat or sunglasses, and if you submit blurry, pixelated photos, or ones taken from awkward angles, it will affect your results.</p><div type="image" title="Rebecca Knight" height="1741" width="2316" msid="99690629" hostid="261" sizebytes="186036"></div><p>I selected my pictures carefully. The perfect headshot, in my mind, is one that conveys a serious person who doesn't take herself too seriously. I wanted to look diligent and hardworking, the kind of journalist who hits her deadlines — but who's also <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/a-googler-explains-why-the-airport-test-is-actually-bad-for-hiring-2015-3">capable of passing the airport test</a>. </p><p>There were other considerations, too. <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-can-older-workers-prove-ageism-and-age-bias-in-hiring-2022-11">Ageism in the workplace is a big problem</a> and something that any middle-aged worker — <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/expert-tips-for-older-workers-in-their-40s-and-50s-looking-for-a-job-2022-11">or, frankly, anyone over 35</a> — needs to be mindful of. I wasn't looking for a headshot to make me look younger per se, but I didn't want it to prematurely age me either.  </p><p><a href="https://hbr.org/2011/09/exploiting-beauty-in-the-workp" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Research suggests women also face extra challenges</a>. Ideally, I wanted my headshot to convey <a href="https://link.springer.com/article/10.1007/s10869-020-09713-4" target="_blank" rel="noopener">personal warmth</a>. And while it's advisable to <a href="https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/abs/10.1111/peps.12469" target="_blank" rel="noopener">look attractive</a>, you shouldn't look <a href="https://hbr.org/2019/11/for-women-in-business-beauty-is-a-liability" target="_blank" rel="noopener">too attractive</a>. The feminist in me is loath to kowtow, but the realist in me is practical. </p><p>This is all to say, I didn't have a ton of great uploadable options at my disposal. </p><p>But, my friends, it didn't matter at all.</p><h2><strong>Glamour, professionalism, and Michelle Obama arms</strong></h2><p>My results were at turns pleasing, horrifying, and downright ridiculous. The original sales pitch has been <a href="https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/168282293/lisa-frank-makeup-collaboration/description">removed from Kickstarter</a>, where it raised $370,063, though you can still see the incentives offered to hopeful customers.</p><p>Some of the brand's goals are also on Kickfurther, a business-focused crowdfunding site where Glamour Dolls <a href="https://www.kickfurther.com/coop/glamour-dolls-makeup--lisa-frank-collection">raised $313,189</a>.</p><p>The <a href="https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/168282293/lisa-frank-makeup-collaboration/description">highest-priced pledge options</a>, at $100 and $200, offered a range of Lisa Frank-themed beauty products and accessories including an eye-shadow palette, lipstick, makeup brushes, and more.</p><p>Over 5,930 people backed the project, and 1,709 people purchased the highest tiers.</p><p>Though <a href="https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/168282293/lisa-frank-makeup-collaboration/posts/1984187">Glamour Dolls kept fans updated</a> throughout 2017 on Kickstarter, some grew frustrated at the end of the year when it <a href="https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/168282293/lisa-frank-makeup-collaboration/posts/2060601">began selling Lisa Frank makeup through retailers like Ipsy and Hot Topic</a> but hadn't sent rewards to its Kickstarter backers.</p><div type="image" title="glamour dolls comments" height="1088" width="1578" msid="79287905" hostid="261"></div><p>Glamour Dolls <a href="https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/168282293/lisa-frank-makeup-collaboration/posts/2108878">acknowledged this frustration</a> in updates posted on its Kickstarter page. But it went silent after September 21, 2018, when <a href="https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/168282293/lisa-frank-makeup-collaboration/posts/2294856">the company said</a> it was "encountering issues" it "never imagined" when its founders "enthusiastically began this campaign."</p><p>It finally returned on April 20, 2020, with <a href="https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/168282293/lisa-frank-makeup-collaboration/posts/2816323">an update</a> from cofounder Peter Georgotas saying that Glamour Dolls had not "stopped fighting" to get backers a "resolution on this project." The update also said Lisa Frank "threatened to take legal action" against Glamour Dolls in July 2018 if the company continued to update backers about the status of its collaboration.</p><p>"To date, we have paid over $750,000 to the artist in artwork fees, royalty advances and sales royalties (much of which was for the products you purchased and did not receive)," Georgotas wrote. "It included all the money raised by this Kickstarter campaign, whatever money we had as a business and loans that we and our families personally took out to continue paying into the license."</p><p>Representatives for Glamour Dolls and Georgotas did not immediately respond to Insider's request for comment.</p><h2>Several Kickstarter backers told Insider they were furious with Lisa Frank and wouldn't support the Morphe collaboration</h2><p>Gina Hamilton, a 36-year-old from Virginia, told Insider she first backed the Glamour Dolls Kickstarter campaign on February 24, 2017, with $100. She'd even received a postcard, bronzer, and a single eye shadow by November of that year.</p><p>But then, she said, "everything fell apart." She said that she didn't get a refund for the products she never received and that she no longer trusted Lisa Frank.</p><p>"I'm no longer a Lisa Frank fan," Hamilton told Insider. "I will NOT be buying anything with her name on it. It's a real shame because I loved her stuff when I was younger."</p><p>Hamilton said she felt that the Lisa Frank brand had "discarded" the Kickstarter backers "like trash." She said she backed the campaign in April 2017 and received two small makeup products but never received a refund.</p><p>"To be quite honest, I'm pissed off," Sandersfeld said when asked about her thoughts on the Lisa Frank x Morphe line. "We went through so much just for Lisa Frank to turn around and act like nothing ever happened."</p><p>"I do not plan to buy it or support Lisa Frank in any way, shape, or form," she added. "Lisa Frank ripped off so many people and doesn't seem to even care, which is upsetting because when I was a kid I had Lisa Frank everything, from stickers to backpacks."</p><h2>Others said they weren't sure whether Lisa Frank or Glamour Dolls was to blame - so they're boycotting both</h2><p>Lizzie Hunsaker, a 26-year-old from Seattle, described her experience backing the Glamour Dolls Kickstarter as "a bit of a roller coaster." She told Insider that while she was originally excited about the concept and donated $75, Glamour Dolls became "a mess," with infrequent updates and arguments among backers.</p><p>Hunsaker said that she asked Glamour Dolls for a refund in August 2018 and was told she'd be given one but that she had to get her money back from her bank after the company failed to do so. So when she saw the news that Lisa Frank and Morphe were collaborating, she was "shocked."</p><p>"I'm certainly not happy that Lisa Frank is collaborating on makeup when the products she had supposedly designed and OK'd years ago never got sent to the people who paid for them," Hunsaker said. "Still, I don't know for sure what went down between Lisa Frank and Glamour Dolls, so I can't definitively say that she shouldn't do this.</p><p>"If the giant mess was all the fault of Glamour Dolls, then she shouldn't be punished for their failures," she continued. "I haven't seen any information on their end either, so right now Lisa Frank is just as guilty as Glamour Dolls, and it shows some nerve to go and collab with another makeup company while a lot of us still haven't gotten what we paid for."</p><p>When asked whether she'd purchase anything from the collection, Reichle said she didn't think so. "It makes me feel like someone just took my money, gave me nothing, and dangled what was to be in front of my face," she told Insider.</p><p>Stephanie, 37, from Washington, told Insider that she purchased the highest backer tier in 2017 and never received products or a refund. She said that while her experience "still stings a bit," she'd buy the new collection "for sure" - she described herself as a "rainbow fanatic, makeup user, and Lisa Frank hoarder."</p><h2>Morphe and Lisa Frank stood by their collaboration in 2020</h2><p>In an email previously sent to Insider, a representative for Lisa Frank Inc. said it "entered into a business arrangement" with Glamour Dolls "several years ago."</p><p>"Unfortunately, Glamour Dolls completely failed to live up to our agreement, which includes their obligations within the Kickstarter campaign, failing to manufacture and deliver the products that our fans rightfully deserved," the representative said. "The Lisa Frank Company knows how you feel, as we did not receive what Glamour Dolls promised us either.</p><p>"After many months of pushing Glamour Dolls to live up to its contractual obligations and deliver products - to our fans and retailers that ordered products - Lisa Frank Inc. reached the point of exasperation, terminated the agreement with Glamour Dolls, and contacted the Federal Government," the statement continued. <p class="enhanced-subtitle">The fashion journalist and 'Project Runway' judge spoke with Insider about the inherent activism of style, the legacy of Black fashion, and how to keep it alive</p><p class="drop-cap">If fashion is the subject, then she is the verb, living and breathing the lessons the industry imposes on everyday life. Elaine Welteroth, 36, is a fashion editor, writer, and TV-show judge whose fascination with fashion began at a young age while watching her mom get dressed for work and for church on Sundays. Early on, she internalized the power of clothes to transform and influence how one is seen and treated in the world. And though there was no single aha moment for her, this early life lesson would be the north star for her journey to becoming a powerful fashion-media leader and icon. </p><p>From her beginnings at Ebony and Glamour as a style editor, to being a judge on "Project Runway," to striking out as a solo author with her book, "More Than Enough<em>,</em>" she refuses to conform to a single predefined path in the fashion world. But her steady rise to the top of the most revered style publications and her talent for creating space for people of color have cemented her place as a thought leader, head cheerleader, tastemaker, and much more. </p><p>As the editor in chief of Teen Vogue from 2016 to 2018, she showed a penchant for building bridges between fashion and the rest of the world, sparking conversations around social justice, politics, and race with younger generations that other media outlets routinely overlooked. For perhaps the first time, a fashion publication talked to teens as humans with valid ideological insights and concerns, not just dolls that needed dressing, all against the backdrop of the polarizing 2016 election. Is there anything in particular in Black history that inspires your personal style or fashion perspective?</strong></p><p>I started at a Black magazine, Ebony Fashion Fair, which plays such an iconic role in fashion history.</p><p>It really brought high fashion to our communities. Eunice Johnson, who was one of the founders of Ebony Fashion Fair, Ebony magazine, and Jet magazine, and the whole Ebony empire — she was a fashion icon ahead of her time. Because the fashion houses would not send clothes to Black fashion magazines, she would go to these houses and purchase couture pieces, bring them back to America, and put them on the runway in Black communities all across this country. I mean, that is revolutionary. So I came into the fashion business at Ebony, where I was aware of this legacy and proud to celebrate it and bring it forward into this modern era. I think it gave me this chip on my shoulder where it felt like I was an outsider on the inside. I always had this relationship to fashion where I felt like I was a little bit in the margins. That allowed me to fight for the underdog. I was fighting for space to be seen, for our culture to be seen, to be validated, to be celebrated.</p><p>So I took that approach to the work I did when I was finally embraced by the fashion community, when I became editor in chief of Teen Vogue. I always felt like I was there for a larger mission. In the least cliché way, I really did feel like I was doing it for the culture. And that gave me the courage to push through moments where I felt like I didn't belong and to keep going. </p><p><strong>In your book and interviews, you've talked a lot about agency and the liberating power of saying no to things that don't serve your goals. What should Black designers and stylists say no to as they navigate the industry?</strong></p><p>The reality is saying no is a privilege that a lot of young Black designers don't have. You have to earn your leverage to say no. There are certain things absolutely you should say no to. But I think it starts with understanding who you are, who you're here to serve, and knowing your why. That is going to inform every yes and no you make along your journey. And it's important to give yourself grace while you're in that process of self-discovery.</p><p>It takes time to develop discernment. Also, when you're desperate to find your footing in an industry that is not set up for you to win, sometimes you have to make compromises. And that's just real talk.</p><p>I think you say no to predatory investors. So often, Black designers aren't even in the conversation or at the tables to have access to funding. Then when we do, we jump at it. Sometimes it's worth a prudent reminder that not all money is good money. You also don't have to say yes to every offer, and you <em>have</em> to read the fine print. At any point where you feel like you're being asked to compromise on those three things — who you are, who you're doing it for, and why — don't do it. Because those are the things that will sustain you.</p><div type="image" title="Elaine Welteroth wears an orange top and pleated skirt against a bright red background" height="2500" width="2000" msid="101552868" hostid="261"></div><p><strong>At Teen Vogue, you broke one of the many long-standing racial barriers in fashion media. You also played a pivotal role in using the beauty and style beat as a vehicle for larger social commentary for young people. How did you bridge that gap, and where can fashion journalism go from here as the political landscape continues to evolve?</strong></p><p>Fashion is political. It's always been political. It will always be political. My first mentor, Harriette Cole, my first boss at Ebony, she'd always say: "Fashion reflects the truth about where we are in our culture." Something to that effect. </p><p>And it's so true. It opens the door to conversations you might not be able to have otherwise. At Teen Vogue, we used this fascination with fashion as a platform to talk about deeper cultural and social issues that impact all of us. It democratized the fashion conversation and created more entry points for people to feel like they're a part of this broader fashion conversation. You can't separate the power of fashion from the power of representation. My work in fashion was largely focused on celebrating representation and opening the door to bring new names, new faces, new talent to the forefront that might not otherwise be seen.</p><p>And that felt like something I could be proud of. I always wrestled with the frivolous perception of fashion. I needed to find the meaning for myself and make sure that what I was putting into the world really mattered. I wanted to make sure that my work always existed at the intersection of style and substance.</p><blockquote class="pullquote-wrapper pullquote-breakout"><q class="pullquote-quotation">I wanted to make sure that my work always existed at the intersection of style and substance.</q></blockquote><p>I am really proud of the work that Teen Vogue did to open the door for Black and Brown and queer image makers and storytellers to be validated in this industry and to have their work showcased. And I know it shifted the culture of fashion media and the conversations that we were allowed to have in that context.</p><p>Marrying the personal with politics through fashion felt, at the time, strangely revolutionary when it shouldn't have been. This is not something Teen Vogue invented at all. There have been so many activists in this space long before us. But I just think that, in that moment, we were carrying forward that movement.</p><div type="image" title="Elaine Welteroth in orange blazer, jean cargo pants and heels against a bright red background" height="2500" width="2000" msid="101552869" hostid="261"></div><p><strong>Some say the p</strong><strong>romises of inclusion in luxury fashion, prompted by the George Floyd protests, have stagnated since 2020. How do you feel about the industry's relationship with Black creatives now compared to the past?</strong></p><p>The relationship has been pretty transactional. It's been very seasonal, temporal if you will. When there is a call to action from the people and pressure to change coming from the outside, you see fashion will respond accordingly. And as soon as that pressure wanes, you see the industry slip right back into the status quo. So I think it's just a message for all of us that we have to keep the pressure on.</p><p>The progress and the regression that we're witnessing is not new. There was so much diversity in fashion in the '70s, and then it went away. And then the '90s were just whitewashed. You had token Black models, and even they were very slender. </p><p>That historical context is helpful whenever I feel disenchanted or discouraged about the waning interest in doing the right thing. It does feel exhausting. It's like, "Ugh, didn't we already do this in 2008, 2012, 2000? Haven't we been loud enough? Haven't we been consistent enough? What more do we have to do?" But that's when you have to talk to your elders and understand the work that they've been doing and how long they've been in it, and make sure that you're educating the next generation on that history and making sure they understand their role in carrying out this legacy of changemaking within this space. </p><p><strong>On "Project Runway," what designs are the most moving to you? Is there a common thread (pun intended)?</strong></p><p>It's the challenges that require them to go into a deeply personal place and to dig deep to be resourceful and creative. It's the challenges where the parameters are really narrow and squeeze out what they're really made of. When the pressure cooker gets cranked way up, and the constraints get really tight, that's when you see magic. That's when you see their genius come forth or you see a complete breakdown.  </p><blockquote class="pullquote-wrapper pullquote-right"><q class="pullquote-quotation">When the pressure cooker gets cranked way up, and the constraints get really tight, that's when you see magic.</q></blockquote><p>I will never forget the unconventional challenge, season 19, when the <a href="https://www.bravotv.com/the-daily-dish/project-runway-season-19-winner-is-shantall-lacayo-finalists-react" target="_blank" rel="noopener">designer</a> who went on to win that season gave us, I'm not even joking, it was giving <em>couture</em>.</p><p>It was high fashion. She made the <a href="https://www.goldderby.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/12/NUP_194205_00620.jpg?w=667" target="_blank" rel="noopener">dress out of straws</a> that she spray-painted black, and it looked like a latex leather, bodycon, structural invention that just blew our minds. It was unbelievable to us that she was able to do it with the materials that she had at her disposal. This is a young woman of color from Colombia. All of the chips were stacked against her, coming to America as an immigrant, as a woman, as a mother, as a wife.</p><p>She had just had a baby that she left at home to come make her mark on this industry. I cried on that one. I just saw something so incredibly special in her, and I was so grateful that this platform exists for designers like her to get their moment. It feels really good to know that we are opening up this fun, dramatic, awesome entry point for designers who live in the margins to be seen by the mainstream. How do you see this drive impacting the industry as a whole? What other ways is "Project Runway" pushing boundaries?</strong><p>On "Project Runway," it's a major priority. It's fashion for the people. So to not reflect the people watching the show would just be a disservice to our viewers.</p><p>One other area that we are pushing the envelope is dressing for all genders, including gender-nonconforming folks. This season, we have one gender-nonconforming designer who actually has transitioned in their identity since previously being on the show. </p><p>I also think showcasing designers who are older and coming back. Before, there was this idea that we are giving young designers their first big break, but in this case, because it's an all-star season, you're seeing designers from season one, 20 years ago, come back and show us a new side of themselves. It celebrates this idea that you're ever-evolving as a creative and it's not that your career is over if you haven't made it by 30 or 40. I think that's super inspiring. That's part of this larger conversation about diversity also representing every age, size, and background, and just normalizing, being different from what we've traditionally seen centered in fashion. </p><p><strong>You've pivoted several times in your career, from journalism to entertainment, writing to hosting to acting, yet fashion has been a consistent presence in every project. With the recent move to LA, we can't help but wonder: What's next?</strong></p><p>I feel like I'm in my "next." I'm embracing motherhood and adulthood. Work-life balance and this concept of "<a href="https://www.insider.com/brandon-blackwood-designer-new-shoe-line-hopes-for-future-interview-2023-5">soft life</a>" has really appealed to me. I literally have been working multiple jobs since I was 14, and I'm still working a ton, but my relationship to work is shifting. I had the best time, and we're looking out over the LA skyline, and I said, "I really enjoy our lifestyle in LA." To be honest, I didn't even know what lifestyle meant until I moved to LA because in New York, you don't have a lifestyle — you have a "workstyle." You get to build this holistic world for yourself that is inclusive of work, but it is not to the detriment of the rest of your life.</p><p>I am having a really good time integrating this new sense of balance, especially with having a baby. Elaine Welteroth says the next generation of Black designers must carry out a 'legacy of changemaking' in fashion that's been going on for decades

She was home sick with COVID-19, and I was revising a long document for <keyword id="6355058" type="General" weightage="60" keywordseo="work" source="Orion">work</keyword> that I'd promised to a client by the end of the day. I'd already taken time off the week prior for a post-exposure quarantine and was racing to catch up on work. <br /><br />Suddenly, my screen went blank, the words I'd spent hours writing disappeared, and my work window was closing. I frantically pressed "undo," but nothing reappeared. My head pounded. The tech glitch toppled the final log that had been holding back a flood of anxiety and exhaustion for weeks. <br /><br />I'd worked evenings when my daughter was quarantined, reviewed the ever-changing return-to-school guidelines when her latest test came back positive, and hovered over her as she sang to her dolls, praying that no severe symptoms would surface. <br /><br />Staring at the blank laptop screen while my daughter sang along to Moana, I cried. I paced. Then I texted my boss, Laura, the founder of the marketing firm I work for and a mother of three: <em>Savana will need to isolate for the full 10 days.</em> <em>I may need to take more time off than I expected</em>. She replied immediately: <em>Let us know how we can support you</em>. She suggested reaching out to the vice president in charge of resourcing to see about redistributing some of my work. <br /><br /><h2><strong>This sign of support from my boss gave me the relief I needed</strong></h2>I wiped my face, made my daughter a sandwich, and resolved to write the article again. The supportive text made me feel connected and not so alone. It also came in stark contrast to the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/mandatory-on-site-work-hurts-working-moms-leave-in-past-2020-6?fbclid=IwAR08mJzqdyfhdylwjkRnM_mBtsT3tOzunJzHbkCCdazI7yqdRQKB47B_sKk">hostility I'd experienced</a> after giving birth to my daughter when I worked at a male-owned, male-run company. <br /><br />At that company, I took a combination of short-term disability and unpaid leave (they didn't offer <keyword id="78369" type="General" weightage="60" keywordseo="maternity-leave" source="Orion">maternity leave</keyword>) until my daughter was three months old.<br /><br />I'd also been allowed to work from home at least one day a week for the four years prior, ever since having my son. But when my manager called to reconfirm my start date after my leave, he told me "the whole work-from-home thing is going away." Employees had complained that only moms got to work from home, so instead of opening the benefit to anyone, they closed it to everyone. <br /><br />That one day without an hour-long commute each way was everything to me. Nonetheless, the following week, I left my daughter at daycare and went back to the office. <br /><br />I walked into a meeting that day where there was  a male colleague I barely knew. He was shrugging off a coworker's jab about his frequent time away from the office. "Well," he said, shooting me a casual glance,  "Megan just took a three-month vacation!" That's when I decided to find a job at a company led by women, and in June 2020 I did. <br /><br /><h2>When my daughter had COVID-19, my current employer's support came through thoughtful gestures as well as structural benefits</h2><br /><br />  <div type="image" title="Megan Feldman Bettencourt in her home office" height="2131" width="2842" msid="90692363" hostid="261"></div>The communications and marketing firm I work for, <a href="https://meetatct.com/">Center Table</a> at <a href="https://groundfloormedia.com/">Ground Floor Media</a>, offers <keyword id="1591611" type="General" weightage="60" keywordseo="remote-work" source="Orion">remote work</keyword> and flexible schedules that include various levels of part-time employment as well as contractor positions for consultants. <br /><br />This flexibility is one reason that many employees have stayed with the company for well over a decade and some for more than 15 and 20 years. Many of the mothers I work with have been with the firm full-time, part-time, and as consultants during different phases of life. For me, the ability to work remotely saves hours of commuting and allows me to cook and pick up the kids in time for dinner. <br /><br />Being able to work a reduced schedule — without losing opportunities to advance like most part-time workers do — has been key to getting through the past two years relatively unscathed. When my daughter was quarantined and then isolated, it was tough yet doable to meet my billable hours requirement. Doing so with a full-time workload wouldn't have been sustainable. <br /><br /><h2><strong>It also means a lot to me that my employer prioritizes physical and mental health and work-life balance</strong></h2>They offer unlimited time off, quarterly mental health days, and leadership coaching with a heavy emphasis on emotional IQ. <br /><br />The pandemic and the Great Resignation have made clear what my managers have long understood: Supporting <keyword id="81684" type="General" weightage="60" keywordseo="working-parents" source="Orion">working parents</keyword> and employees' general wellness is not only the right thing to do, but it's also good for business. <br /><br />The lived experience of female business leaders like my boss Laura makes them reassess the status quo — for example, Laura was pregnant when she started the company, so she couldn't minimize the need for parental leave. <br /><br />For me, the freedom to work in the ways that fit my life and with a team that supports me as a working parent make a world of difference in how I feel about work.
