In these uncertain times, smartphones have become an even more critical part of our lives to video call, work, order groceries or keep us entertained. About 15 years back, we didn’t have to worry about countless apps running simultaneously and draining resources like battery and system memory. Now, a comprehensive mobile operating system is required to manage everything. Issues that were nascent in the past, such as security, connectivity, and notifications are now core to the phone’s operating system. The home is now going through a similar evolution. The average home, once only having a few connected devices, now has well into the double digits. These examples, plus an influx of other in-house connections, create a tidal wave of not only connected devices but their related software applications. So what happens when experiences collide, and broadband becomes an issue in the home? The issue with the hyper-connected home Although <keyword id="735633" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="internet-connectivity">internet connectivity</keyword> is a critical resource for connected devices in the home, there is a lack of visible value to users. Consumers expect things to work. But even more connected devices and assistants will be independently, relentlessly tapping into the network, and causing conflict among the ecosystem. For example, streaming 4K on a <keyword id="169786" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="smart-TV">smart TV</keyword> causing latency issues for cloud gaming, or a consumer not knowing what device is creating suboptimal network quality across the home. Experience management, visibility, simplicity, and management capabilities will become increasingly important. This is because the numbers are reaching into the double-digit domain and they all have different operating systems, onboarding experiences and network demands. They have to work together in real time while “competing” with the same network or Wi-Fi resources. Where the opportunity lies As more in-home connected apps need to be managed, someone has to be ready with a place in the value chain – and it has to go beyond connectivity and back-end operations. Luckily, the “connectivity explosion” represents a critical opportunity in the home. The gap between the legacy connectivity play and the support necessary to support a flourishing connectivity eco-system can make the connectivity providers the de-facto home operating system for consumers. It can bring more value, intelligence and engagement to the broadband experience. For connectivity providers specifically, it means less calls to call centers, and fewer unnecessary home visits to troubleshoot (which is especially critical at this moment in time). This means cost savings and better workforce management, even as the connected ecosystem becomes more complicated. Who will make sense of a cluttered connected experience? What could this look like? For starters, in the past, consumers only really engaged with their broadband when something wasn’t working. By adding an intelligence layer, value is created, which allows consumers to interact with their provider every day. Through a home operating system, connectivity providers can give consumers easy visibility and control over experiences, as well as better security. But more importantly, smart insights about usage, important events, warnings and more. Essentially, this turns any broadband user’s home into a smart home. This can be done by leveraging AI to convert signals from connected devices within the home into actionable lifestyle and operational insights. When we leverage intelligence this way, we achieve the next level in the connectivity revolution. Connectivity providers can have a pivotal role here if they act quickly. Tech earnings were a huge disappointment and analysts don't see much relief on the horizon. Alphabet, for example, reported a 27% decline in profits, and Meta reported a more than 50% tumble. But there was weakness among others like Microsoft — which saw its slowest revenue growth in five years — and Amazon, which gave <a href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/news/stocks/big-tech-earnings-biggest-takeaways-alphabet-meta-microsoft-apple-amazon-2022-10">bleak forecasts for what it expects for sales this holiday season</a>.Big Tech saw unsustainable growth coming out of the pandemic and now it's finally catching up, the New York Stock Exchange's senior strategist, Michael Reinking, told me, adding that he anticipates a looming "valuation reset" for these mega-cap stocks.Ahead of the weekend, Gil Luria, a technology strategist at DA Davidson, told me that despite the earnings drag, names like Meta, Alphabet, and Microsoft have <a href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/news/stocks/big-tech-earnings-biggest-takeaways-alphabet-meta-microsoft-apple-amazon-2022-10">signaled they'll continue massive spending</a>. "The common thread between the mega cap tech earnings reports this week is the companies' unwillingness to cut costs aggressively ahead of an economic slowdown, in spite of investor expectations," he said.Meta in particular turned heads on Wall Street. JPMorgan analysts said the heaps of cash Zuck's throwing into the metaverse hasn't actually clarified what that business or product will actually look like. And notably, Amazon, for its part, projected the company is about to see its slowest fourth-quarter growth ever — which signals <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/amazon-flashed-holiday-warning-retailers-hoping-to-avoid-2022-10">trouble for the holiday shopping season.</a>"We are seeing signs all around that, again, people's budgets are tight, inflation is still high, energy costs are an additional layer on top of that caused by other issues," Amazon CFO Brian Olsavsky told reporters last week. The Fed won't pivot from its rate hikes until the end of 2023 because the economy isn't slowing down as expected, according to a top JPMorgan strategist. Inflation is proving stubborn, which means <a href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/news/stocks/recession-fear-inflation-fed-pivot-rate-hikes-tightening-economy-housing-2022-10">policymakers will push ahead</a> with rate hikes well into next year. Meanwhile, <a href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/news/bonds/recession-prediction-inflation-fed-rate-hike-overtighten-us-global-economy-2022-10">a recent survey found three-quarters of economists expect the Fed to go too far.</a>7. Investors dumped Chinese bonds for an eighth consecutive month. That's good for the longest streak on record. A weakening yuan and aggressive Fed have combined to make yuan-denominated debt less attractive. <a href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/news/bonds/chinese-bonds-foreign-investors-8-months-longest-slump-yuan-fed-2022-10">The share of government notes owned by foreign investors dipped to 9.4% at the end of September from 9.8% in the prior month.</a>8. This real estate investor bought his first property at age 24 and now owns 11 rental units. Even though tech stocks have become dramatically cheaper and some have hit all-time lows, it's still not time to buy.
