The third working paper from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change was released Sunday in Berlin.
The report shows that global greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions are accelerating despite reduction efforts and focuses on mitigation scenarios such as investing in renewable energy.

In the most ambitious scenario (light-blue), it shows that if we increase low-carbon energy sources, we can stabilize atmospheric carbon dioxide concentration at around 450 ppm, (the concentration now is 400 ppm). You can see that the more we invest now, the higher the payoff later.

Annual investment in fossil fuel technologies will need to decline by 20% and annual investments in low-carbon technologies should be increased by 100%.

<ul><li>A new study shows that <keyword id="1013934" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="meat-consumption">meat consumption</keyword> habits are increasing, which could lead to an overall increase in greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.</li><li><keyword id="6407539" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Livestock">Livestock</keyword> is responsible for the same amount of carbon emissions as transport. </li><li>Scientists in India are exploring how to tailor the diet of cattle so that they produce 12-15% less methane.</li></ul>Vehicles and carbon emissions is a story as old as the industrial revolution, but nobody’s thinking of greenhouse gases when they see a cow cross the road. Talking of the growing concerns on <keyword id="6361617" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="climate-change">climate change</keyword>, Microsoft founder, Bill Gates, in his <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/bill-gates-warns-of-the-dangers-of-cow-farts-and-the-world-should-take-his-words-seriously/articleshow/67962704.cms">annual letter</a>, expressed concern over the dangers of cow farts. "I wish more people fully understood what it will take to stop climate change," the letter said. A 2018 study, titled <a href="http://science.sciencemag.org/content/361/6399/eaam5324.full">‘The Future of Meat</a>’ published in Science Mag explores the correlation between human meat consumption and population growth. Conclusions drawn show how these consumption habits are increasing and because of which, not only is it a health hazard for humans but there are negative consequences for the <keyword id="6356826" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="ENVIRONMENT">environment</keyword> as well. However, there are two key areas other than the growing population and their intake of meat -- manufacturing of building materials and agriculture -- which may have a dangerous consequence, according to him. While the world is on a swing to twice the number of buildings by 2060, the letter highlighted that the raw materials used for buildings constitute 21% of the <keyword id="82635" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="greenhouse-emissions">greenhouse emissions</keyword>, globally. Contributing his bit, Gates was addressing climate change via Breakthrough Energy Ventures and <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/category/bill-and-melinda-gates-foundation">Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation</a>, aimed at enhancing healthcare. Climate change Livestock, inclusive of cattle, chickens, sheep, pigs and goats, are <a href="https://news.un.org/en/story/2014/04/466012">responsible</a> for nearly 14.5% of global greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions according to the United National Food and Agriculture Organisation. That means that the emissions from livestock are at par, if not a little in excess, with emissions from transport that stand at around 14% <a href="https://www.epa.gov/ghgemissions/global-greenhouse-gas-emissions-data">according</a> to the UN Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change.

 The analysis done in the study compares the variation in the levels of GHG emissions across different meat production cycles. Their study shows that ruminant mammals like <keyword id="52148" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="cows">cows</keyword> are responsible for the highest amount of emissions, followed by non-ruminant mammals and poultry, in that order. Even in comparing the different production systems, intensive rearing is more environmentally friendly than its extensive counterparts. What can India do? It’s no secret that India is home to largest cow population in the world. Between Mother Dairy, Amul and various regional milk brands, milk is essentially India’s largest ‘crop’ <a href="https://economictimes.indiatimes.com/markets/expert-view/milk-is-indias-largest-crop-worth-around-rs-6-5-lakh-crore-says-rs-sodhi-of-amul/articleshow/63171485.cms">valued</a> at around ₹650 billion. There are a quite a few different schools of thought on the matter. While some approach the problem from the consumption side, where human choice behavior is analysed, others believe the solutions lie in changing livestock rearing techniques. The National Dairy Development Board (NDDB) is working towards <a href="https://theconversation.com/to-reduce-greenhouse-gases-from-cows-and-sheep-we-need-to-look-at-the-big-picture-56509">tailoring</a> the diet of cattle in such a way that <keyword id="859515" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Methane-Emissions">methane emissions</keyword> are minimised. Using physical and environmental parameters, the ideal feed quantities and mineral supplements are determined. According to their study so far, the tailored diet can mean up to 12-15% less methane emissions from cows and buffaloes. The issues of livestock rearing and consumption patterns are highly localised and need policy changes at a local level. There is no blanket solution that can be applied globally and be conducive for all countries involved.

Cow farts and livestock dangerous for climate change: Bill Gates

Adani Transmission Ltd (<keyword id="447291" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="atl" source="Orion">ATL</keyword>), India's largest private power distribution company and the transmission arm of the diversified <keyword id="6367820" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="adani-group" source="Orion">Adani Group</keyword>, has submitted its Green House Gases (GHG) emission reduction plans, focussing on Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi), an international drive for containing global warming. ATL has submitted its detailed plan and targets for GHG emission reduction to SBTi within one year towards its commitment to contribute to contain global warming. As a part of its continued focus on sustainable growth and its net zero journey, ATL committed for the SBTi in October 2021. ATL will act in alignment with the much-needed climate action and devise a strategy to restrict global warming to 1.5 degree Celsius. To meet these targets associated with the SBTi commitment, ATL has rolled out definite strategies. In a first-of-its-kind initiative in the country, ATL's subsidiary AEML (Adani Electricity Mumbai Ltd) has introduced green tariffs, which enables AEML consumers to opt for green energy and receive a Green Power Certificate every month. This initiative is popular with consumers who wish to reduce their carbon footprint. "We take seriously all initiatives focused on contributing to India's climate commitment through resolute climate action," said <keyword id="175186" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="anil-sardana" source="Orion">Anil Sardana</keyword>, MD &amp; CEO, Adani Transmission Ltd. "Submitting targets for the SBTi reiterates our commitment to devising sustainable ways of doing business. It also reinforces India's efforts to reduce climate risk through individual and collective action. A culmination of several smaller actions such as energy efficiency initiatives at sub-stations, de-linking of substations from the grid for auxiliary power while connecting them with solar energy, and introduction of efficient transmission lines aimed at reducing losses, combined with wider actions such as introduction of green tariff at AEML, will significantly contribute towards achieving positive climate action." Signing up for the SBTi is an important step in the context of India's commitments to the Paris Climate Agreement. ATL became a signatory of UN Energy Compact at COP26 held in Glasgow in 2021. Through SBTi, companies are setting science-based emissions reduction targets - across their entire value chain - that are consistent with keeping global warming at 1.5 degree Celsius above pre-industrial levels. SBTi committed companies get 24 months to submit their targets. ATL, after committing to SBTi in Oct 2021, is one of the few companies to submit the emission reduction targets within one year. SBTi is a collaboration between CDP, the United Nations Global Compact, World Resources Institute (<keyword id="1044129" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="wri" source="Orion">WRI</keyword>) and the <keyword id="62483" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="world-wide-fund-for-nature" source="Orion">World Wide Fund for Nature</keyword> (<keyword id="18630" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="wwf" source="Orion">WWF</keyword>). It defines and promotes best practices in science-based target setting and independently assesses companies' targets. <keyword id="541988" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="SnapDeal">Snapdeal</keyword>, the online marketplace headquartered in New Delhi, has tied up with state-run <keyword id="1877338" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Energy-Efficiency-Services-Ltd">Energy Efficiency Services Ltd</keyword> (<keyword id="6354918" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="EESL">EESL</keyword>) to sell LED bulbs at Rs 99 per unit. This is a part of EESL implementing the Centre's <keyword id="2835385" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Domestic-Efficient-Lighting-Programme">Domestic Efficient Lighting Programme</keyword> (<keyword id="2677500" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="DELP">DELP</keyword>). 
 
"Under the campaign, Snapdeal will be selling LED bulbs at Rs 99 and enable the Ministry of Power to increase distribution of LED bulbs through its online marketplace to its customers spread across over 5,000 towns and cities of India," said the statement issued by Snapdeal. 
 
This partnership would enable the government to increase its distribution reach for LED bulbs, so that the cause of the DELP programme to promote efficient lighting can be strengthened and awareness on using LED to reduce electricity bill can be enhanced, thereby increasing the efficiency in domestic energy consumption. 
 
"Snapdeal is proud to be chosen as a partner by the Power Ministry to support its DELP programme. With our unmatched reach in metros as well as tier 2 and beyond, and our huge customer base, we will be able to support the Government achieve its target of replacing incandescent bulbs with LEDs," said Rahul Taneja, Vice President, Category Management, Snapdeal. 
 
Saurabh Kumar, MD, EESL said, "Our goal is to reach out to as many people to realise the goal of an energy efficient India. Our partnership with Snapdeal is an attempt in this direction." 
 
"In today's time, e-commerce is a platform for maximising reach and I am hopeful that this partnership will make the programme more accessible to the people and drive it across the country," Kumar added. 
 
As per DELP, the government aims at replacing all the 77 crore incandescent bulbs sold in India with LED bulbs, which would result in the reduction of 20,000 MW load, and save energy of 105 billion KWh and Green House Gas (GHG) emissions while savings 80 million tonnes every year. This would save Rs 40,000 crore in electricity bills, considering an average tariff of Rs 4 per kWh.

Snapdeal joins hands with EESL; would sell LED bulbs for Rs 99

<div class="image-container float_right" style="width:480px"><div class="image">REUTERS/Larry Downing</div></div>President Barack Obama said in a major address on climate change Tuesday that the construction of the Keystone XL Pipeline should not be approved unless the State Department determines that it will not increase greenhouse gas emissions.
"The net effects of the pipeline's impact on our climate will be absolutely critical in determining whether this project will be allowed to go forward," Obama said during an address at Georgetown University.
He said it will not be built if it contributes to carbon pollution.
"Our national interest will be served only if this project doesn't significant exacerbate the problem of carbon pollution," he said.
In his speech, Obama <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/obamas-carbon-plan-isnt-good-but-its-the-best-thing-around-2013-6" target="_blank">outlined plans to curb carbon emissions</a>. There was no indication he had been planning to address the Keystone situation, a topic on which he has carefully avoided weighing in. 
He has faced enormous pressure from environmental activists to shut down the planned construction of the pipeline, which they worry could harm the environment.
The State Department and activists have bickered about <a href="http://keystonepipeline-xl.state.gov/documents/organization/205563.pdf">a draft study</a> that determined the pipeline would not greatly increase greenhouse gases. The study found that while building the pipeline itself wouldn't increase emissions, the development of oil sands crudes in general could:
[F]rom a global perspective, the decision whether or not to build the Project will not affect the extraction and combustion of WCSB oil sands crude on the global market. However, on a life-cycle basis and compared with reference crudes refined in the United States, oil sands crudes could result in an increase in incremental GHG emissions.
However, the EPA has <a href="http://www.washingtonpost.com/national/health-science/epa-wants-state-dept-to-rework-analysis-of-keystone-xl-pipeline/2013/04/22/1c6e9812-ab9f-11e2-b6fd-ba6f5f26d70e_story.html">objected to that conclusion</a>.
The pronouncement doesn't mean that Obama has killed the project, but ensures that it first meets some kind of environmental standard.
Brendan Buck, a spokesman for House Speaker John Boehner, said in a statement that Obama's speech should lead to a quick approval of the pipeline's construction.
"The standard the president set today should lead to speedy approval of the Keystone pipeline," Buck said. "Based on the lengthy review by the State Department, construction of the pipeline would not have a significant environmental impact. It’s time to sign off on Keystone and put Americans to work."
