Ltd. (NEPRA) for their home games during the <keyword id="20898019" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="TATA-IPL-2024" source="Orion">TATA IPL 2024</keyword> season at Ahmedabad's <keyword id="10818893" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Narendra-Modi-Stadium" source="Orion">Narendra Modi Stadium</keyword>. Emphasising the team’s commitment to environmental stewardship through sustainability, GT COO Colonel Arvinder Singh said: “Responsible behaviour on and off the field is an integral part of our conduct at Gujarat Titans. We are alive to the challenges that all of us face and shall strive to make a difference with our sustainable initiatives. Our partnership with NEPRA will enable us to contribute significantly to waste reduction and encourage fans to preserve the environment while enjoying the games.” These initiatives mark a significant advancement from the Titans' previous endeavours during IPL 2023, where they focused on minimising waste sent to landfills and promoting plastic reuse through partnerships with organisations like Bisleri. Batting for the environment: Gujarat Titans kickstart sustainability and circular waste economy initiatives

Adani Transmission Ltd (<keyword id="447291" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="atl" source="Orion">ATL</keyword>), India's largest private power distribution company and the transmission arm of the diversified <keyword id="6367820" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="adani-group" source="Orion">Adani Group</keyword>, has submitted its Green House Gases (GHG) emission reduction plans, focussing on Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi), an international drive for containing global warming. ATL has submitted its detailed plan and targets for GHG emission reduction to SBTi within one year towards its commitment to contribute to contain global warming. As a part of its continued focus on sustainable growth and its net zero journey, ATL committed for the SBTi in October 2021. ATL will act in alignment with the much-needed climate action and devise a strategy to restrict global warming to 1.5 degree Celsius. To meet these targets associated with the SBTi commitment, ATL has rolled out definite strategies. In a first-of-its-kind initiative in the country, ATL's subsidiary AEML (Adani Electricity Mumbai Ltd) has introduced green tariffs, which enables AEML consumers to opt for green energy and receive a Green Power Certificate every month. This initiative is popular with consumers who wish to reduce their carbon footprint. "We take seriously all initiatives focused on contributing to India's climate commitment through resolute climate action," said <keyword id="175186" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="anil-sardana" source="Orion">Anil Sardana</keyword>, MD &amp; CEO, Adani Transmission Ltd. "Submitting targets for the SBTi reiterates our commitment to devising sustainable ways of doing business. It also reinforces India's efforts to reduce climate risk through individual and collective action. A culmination of several smaller actions such as energy efficiency initiatives at sub-stations, de-linking of substations from the grid for auxiliary power while connecting them with solar energy, and introduction of efficient transmission lines aimed at reducing losses, combined with wider actions such as introduction of green tariff at AEML, will significantly contribute towards achieving positive climate action." Signing up for the SBTi is an important step in the context of India's commitments to the Paris Climate Agreement. ATL became a signatory of UN Energy Compact at COP26 held in Glasgow in 2021. Through SBTi, companies are setting science-based emissions reduction targets - across their entire value chain - that are consistent with keeping global warming at 1.5 degree Celsius above pre-industrial levels. SBTi committed companies get 24 months to submit their targets. ATL, after committing to SBTi in Oct 2021, is one of the few companies to submit the emission reduction targets within one year. SBTi is a collaboration between CDP, the United Nations Global Compact, World Resources Institute (<keyword id="1044129" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="wri" source="Orion">WRI</keyword>) and the <keyword id="62483" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="world-wide-fund-for-nature" source="Orion">World Wide Fund for Nature</keyword> (<keyword id="18630" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="wwf" source="Orion">WWF</keyword>). Adani Transmission to become net-zero by 2050

<ul><li>India plans to start using 20% <keyword id="440140" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="Ethanol-blended-petrol" source="Orion">ethanol blended petrol</keyword> from 2025.</li><li>Currently, most petrol pumps give 10% ethanol blended petrol.</li><li>Economists argue that ethanol production in the future will have to rely more on maize and less on sugarcane and rice. </li></ul> At present, when you go to fill petrol, the petrol you get is mixed with 10% ethanol and the government is looking to double this by 2025. Prime Minister Narendra Modi rolled out 20% ethanol-blended petrol in select gas stations in 11 States and Union Territories earlier this year as part of a programme to increase use of biofuels to cut emissions as well as dependence on foreign exchange-draining imports. First, how is ethanol made? Most of the fuel ethanol produced around the world is made by fermenting the sugar in the starches of grains such as corn, sorghum, and barley, and the sugar in sugar cane and sugar beets, as per the US Energy Information Administration. <keyword id="13884282" type="General" weightage="60" keywordseo="what-is-ethanol-blending" source="Orion">What is ethanol blending</keyword> and how does it help? <keyword id="146615" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="ethanol-blending" source="Orion">Ethanol blending</keyword> is nothing but blended motor fuel containing ethyl alcohol that is at least 99% pure and is derived from agricultural products, and blended exclusively with petrol. An ethanol blended petrol helps on two counts. One, ethanol is a biofuel and so it is good for the environment. Second, it helps India as a country to cut down on its crude oil import bills. Ethanol and the environment Grain-based ethanol cuts greenhouse gas emissions significantly by 44 to 52% compared to gasoline, according to the US Department of Energy's Argonne National Laboratory. A report by Renewable Fuels Association says that researchers from Harvard, MIT, and Tufts have concluded that today's corn ethanol offers an average GHG reduction of 46% versus gasoline. Emerging technologies promise to boost that reduction to near 70% in the next few years, according to USDA. So, what is the government’s plan? The government has said it plans to push up the current 10% ethanol blended petrol to 20% in the next two years across India. This work is happening in two phases. In the first phase, 15 cities will be covered and then it will be expanded throughout the country in the next two years. Consumer Affairs Minister Piyush Goyal has said that the government is confident of achieving its target by 2025. Is E-20 petrol available currently? E-20 (petrol blendend with 20% ethanol) was initially available in only 84 petrol pumps in the country. A media report says that it is currently available in close to 1,000 stations. It is noteworthy here that the price of ethanol blended petrol isn’t different for the consumer. Challenges being faced by the industry Currently, most of the ethanol being produced uses either sugarcane on rice as its raw material. Both these crops are water intensive. A month back, when rice prices shot up, The Indian ethanol manufacturers faced a tough time as rice supply was stopped to the industry. This has led to agricultural economists like Ashok Gulati to advocate relying on maize as a policy. Price hike demand accepted The government hiked ethanol rates a month back after the industry demanded a hike arguing without proper returns there cannot be additional investments to boost supply. Now, the purchase price of ethanol produced from rice has been increased by ₹4.75/litre to ₹60.29/litre and for ethanol produced from maize, price has been hiked by ₹6.01/litre to ₹62.36/litre. The reliance on sugar… The Niti Aayog estimates that India will require 1,400 crore litres of ethanol to achieve its target of 20% blending by 2025. This, in turn, means that there is a big jump required in the production of sugar. A report by the Hindu states that out of the 550 crore litres of ethanol that has been produced since November last year, 450 crore litres came from the sugar industry. What about falling sugar production and its impact? Erratic rainfall in the 2023 monsoon season means that sugar production in India will be hit. In fact, a report by Reuters says that India, the second biggest producer of sugar globally, is considering banning sugar exports for the first time in seven years to fight the deficit. Moreover, sugar prices in the country have jumped by more than 3% in a fortnight to their highest level in six years. Concerns about sugar production... The Indian Sugar Mills Association (ISMA) has forecasted a 3.3% production fall in the current sugar year to 31.7 mn tonnes. It is roughly estimated that the country consumes 27.5mn tonnes leaving only a surplus of approximately 4 mn tonnes, as per a Systematix Institutional Equities report. This will hit ethanol production and thus the push to shift to maize by the government. How have the <keyword id="97985" type="General" weightage="40" keywordseo="sugar-stocks" source="Orion">sugar stocks</keyword> fared? Sugar stocks have had a mixed bag performance for most of the past year. While Balrampur Chini is up 3.4% and Dalmia Bharat Sugar is up almost 10% year-to-date, Shree Renuka Sugars and Dwarikesh Sugar have slipped over 7%.

Explained: What is ethanol blending, impact on environment and challenges faced by India

Countries are bending the curve of global greenhouse gas emissions downward but these efforts remain insufficient to limit global temperature rise to 1.5 degrees Celsius by the end of the century, according to a new report from the United Nations. "We are still nowhere near the scale and pace of emission reductions required to put us on track toward a 1.5 degrees Celsius world. To keep this goal alive, national governments need to strengthen their climate action plans now and implement them in the next eight years," said Simon Stiell, Executive Secretary of <keyword id="103165" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="un-climate-change" source="Orion">UN Climate Change</keyword>. According to the report -- UN NDC Synthesis 2022 -- released on Wednesday, the combined climate pledges of 193 Parties under the Paris Agreement could put the world on track for around 2.5 degrees Celsius of warming by the end of the century. The report -- also shows current commitments will increase emissions by 10.6 per cent by 2030, compared to 2010 levels. This is an improvement over last year's assessment, which found countries were on a path to increase emissions by 13.7 per cent by 2030, compared to 2010 levels. Last year's analysis showed projected emissions would continue to increase beyond 2030. However, this year's analysis shows that while emissions are no longer increasing after 2030, they are still not demonstrating the rapid downward trend science says is necessary this decade. The UN's Intergovernmental Panel on <keyword id="6361617" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="climate-change" source="Orion">Climate Change</keyword>'s 2018 report indicated that CO2 emissions needed to be cut 45 per cent by 2030, compared to 2010 levels. The latest science from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC)released earlier this year uses 2019 as a baseline, indicating that greenhouse gas (GHG)emissions need to be cut 43 per cent by 2030. This is critical to meeting the Paris Agreement goal of limiting temperature rise to 1.5 degrees Celsius by the end of this century and avoiding the worst impacts of climate change, including more frequent and severe droughts, heatwaves and rainfall. UN Climate Change analyzed the climate action plans known as nationally determined contributions (NDCs) of 193 Parties to the Paris Agreement, including 24 updated or new NDCs submitted after the UN Climate Change Conference in Glasgow (COP 26) up until 23 September 2022. Taken together, the plans cover 94.9 per cent of total global GHG emissions in 2019. "At the UN Climate Change Conference in Glasgow last year, all countries agreed to revisit and strengthen their climate plans," said Stiell. "The fact that only 24 new or updated climate plans were submitted since COP 26 is disappointing. Government decisions and actions must reflect the level of urgency, the gravity of the threats we are facing, and the shortness of the time we have remaining to avoid the devastating consequences of runaway climate change." Most of the Parties that submitted new or updated NDCs have strengthened their commitment to reducing or limiting greenhouse gas emissions by 2025 and/or 2030, demonstrating increased ambition in addressing climate change. A second UN Climate Change report on long-term low-emission development strategies, also released today, looked at countries' plans to transition to net-zero emissions by or around mid-century. The report indicated that these countries' greenhouse gas emissions could be roughly 68 per cent lower in 2050 than in 2019, if all the long-term strategies are fully implemented on time. COP 26 President Alok Sharma said: "It is critical that we do everything within our means to keep 1.5C in reach, as we promised in the Glasgow Climate Pact. These reports show that although we have made some progress - and every fraction of a degree counts - much more is needed urgently. We need the major emitters to step up and increase ambition ahead of <keyword id="12515304" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="cop27" source="Orion">COP27</keyword>." The UN Climate Change Conference COP 27 will take place in Sharm el-Sheikh, Egypt, from 6 to 18 November this year.

Plans to limit global temperature rise to 1.5 deg C still insufficient: UN

One of the few positive outcomes of the United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP26) is the commitment by major nations to achieve net zero carbon emissions by a certain year. <keyword id="3658" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="india" source="Orion">India</keyword> has also committed to becoming a net zero country by 2070. While some developed nations may have scoffed at this timeline, the reality is that nations with different developmental trajectories cannot (and should not) be treated equally. The major polluters must first walk the talk and then expect others to follow suit. While it is a never-ending blame game between the developed and developing nations, in the interest of humanity and for their own well-being, the nations must do everything within their powers to ensure that they keep their emissions under control. <cmsannotation type="cmsannotation" annotationid="Policy initiatives in India" comment="subhead" text="Policy initiatives in India">Policy initiatives in India</cmsannotation> India has taken several measures towards climate change adaptation and mitigation. Our statutory framework ensures that air and water pollution is prevented and controlled, forests are conserved and restored, biological diversity is protected, and energy is generated and utilised efficiently to ensure minimal environmental impact. The Government has launched various policy initiatives to work towards its climate change commitments. The national and state action plans on climate change aim at integrating such climate action into their modus operandi. Among national schemes, the Faster Adoption and Manufacturing of Hybrid and Electric Vehicles (FAME-II) focuses on clean mobility and is meant to promote the transition to electric vehicles by providing incentives for manufacturing, adoption and development of associated infrastructure for electric vehicles. Financial assistance is being offered at the central and state levels for developing solar and wind energy projects like solar parks, grid-connected solar rooftops in residential buildings, installing off-grid solar devices and solar-based LED lights. Initiatives like Gujarat Emissions Trading Scheme, Renewable Energy Certificate, Perform, Achieve and Trade (PAT) Scheme are all meant to promote renewables, reduce emissions and achieve energy efficiency at the central and state levels. <cmsannotation type="cmsannotation" annotationid="Recent impetus to climate action" comment="subhead" text="Recent impetus to climate action">Recent impetus to climate action</cmsannotation> Some important and innovative schemes initiated in India to combat climate change include the India Cooling Action Plan 2019, which aims to reduce direct and indirect emissions from energy-intensive cooling devices like refrigerators, air conditioners, etc. The National Clean Air Program 2019 aims to reduce air pollution and addresses several forms of harmful emissions. The National Hydrogen Mission launched in 2021 aims to help India achieve its climate targets by making India a green hydrogen hub. India is also targeting to increase the usage of alternative fuels to reduce emissions by blending 20% Ethanol in petrol by 2025. Moreover, policies like National Building Code, 2016, Energy Conservation Building Code, 2017, Buildings Energy Efficiency Programme, green energy rating system, star rating programme, etc., seek to promote sustainability in the construction sector by improving energy efficiency, water conservation, waste management, recycling, etc. The union budget for the financial year 2022-23 also announced initiatives for financing climate change mitigation and adaptation strategies through sovereign green bonds, blended finance, etc. <cmsannotation type="cmsannotation" annotationid="Local and regional climate action" comment="subhead" text="Local and regional climate action">Local and regional climate action</cmsannotation> In addition to the various central government initiatives being implemented across the country, various states are devising their own strategies and plan to combat climate change. States like Gujarat, Odisha, and <keyword id="20154" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="tamil-nadu" source="Orion">Tamil Nadu</keyword> have constituted specific departments and cells to focus on climate change adaptation and mitigation. Kerala has announced a dedicated fund for this purpose and has issued green bonds to invest in climate resilience activities. <keyword id="13126" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="maharashtra" source="Orion">Maharashtra</keyword> has released the Mumbai Climate Action Plan to address climate change impacts in the coastal megacity and achieve net zero emissions by 2050. It is not just the central and state governments but also the corporates are taking active steps to combat climate change. More than sixty Indian companies have announced their net zero greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions targets. Leading Indian companies, including <keyword id="8555" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="tata" source="Orion">Tata</keyword>, Reliance, Mahindra, ITC, Adani Transmission, Arcelor Mittal Nippon Steel, and Dalmia Cement, have voluntarily pledged to move towards carbon neutrality through GHG emissions reduction and energy efficiency. With environmental, social and governance (<keyword id="77363" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="esg" source="Orion">ESG</keyword>) issues gaining prominence and ESG reporting becoming mandatory for the top 1000 companies, almost all major companies are addressing ESG issues to set their house in order and adopt the best practices. Various Indian banks have also incorporated ESG considerations into their lending policies. OPINION: Towards a carbon-neutral India — How central, state governments, and corporations are striving to tackle the planetary crisis

<keyword id="6358070" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="mumbai" source="Orion">Mumbai</keyword> International Airport has entirely switched to green sources for its energy consumption needs, making it one of India's 100 per cent sustainable airports. Of the total 100 per cent, Mumbai's Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (<keyword id="6984665" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="csmia" source="Orion">CSMIA</keyword>) procures around 5 per cent of the airport's electricity requirement through its onsite solar generation and the rest 95 per cent from other green sources such as hydro and wind energy. Ushering into a sustainable future, CSMIA witnessed a rise in natural energy procurement with 57 per cent green consumption in April 2022 to a whopping 98 per cent between May to July. And, finally attained the 100 per cent utilisation of renewable sources of energy in August 2022, said a CSMIA spokesperson. The spokesperson said that the airport is committed to continuous reduction in energy consumption and carbon footprint through various initiatives. Moreover, CSMIA initially undertook the measure of installing a 1.06MW rooftop solar power plant, which the airport eventually strengthened to 4.66 MW. CSMIA was the first in India to launch hybrid technology which solely runs on green energy since April 2022, thus enabling a highly efficient and low carbon future for aviation. This sustainable initiative undertaken by CSMIA is part of the airport's efforts that reduce its carbon footprint which propels its journey towards 'Net Zero' emissions, the spokesperson added. CSMIA implemented a <keyword id="15212680" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="carbon-accounting-and-management-system" source="Orion">Carbon Accounting and Management System</keyword> (CAMS) based on ISO 14064-1:2018 to identify, measure &amp; manage <keyword id="56310" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="greenhouse-gas" source="Orion">GreenHouse Gas</keyword> (GHG) emissions. CSMIA is the first Indian airport to have participated in <keyword id="1939229" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="airport-carbon-accreditation" source="Orion">Airport Carbon Accreditation</keyword> (ACA) program of Airports Council International (ACI) in 2012. Speaking on the occasion, CSMIA's spokesperson said, "We are extremely delighted to achieve this key milestone in our journey towards attaining a sustainable future for CSMIA. The diligent efforts of the airport in undertaking several thoughtful initiatives have paved the way to achieve this feat. As CSMIA aspires to become net-zero by 2029, this landmark event further encourages us to stay committed to our efforts in enhancing the operational efficiency of the airport while operating on fully renewable energy".
