<ul class="summary-list"><li>In 2011, 20-year-old <a href="https://www.insider.com/category/bo-burnham">Bo Burnham</a> appeared on "<keyword id="13182467" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="the-green-room" source="Orion">The Green Room</keyword>" with <keyword id="13182465" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="judd-apatow" source="Orion">Judd Apatow</keyword> and other comedians.</li><li>During a <keyword id="12953163" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="tca" source="Orion">TCA</keyword> event Tuesday, Apatow reflected on the day, saying Burnham "just blew the room away." </li></ul><p>While promoting an upcoming HBO Max documentary about the late <keyword id="11940446" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="comedy" source="Orion">comedy</keyword> legend <keyword id="13182466" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="george-carlin" source="Orion">George Carlin</keyword>, director and producer Judd Apatow reflected on millennial comedian-writer <a href="https://www.insider.com/category/bo-burnham">Bo Burnham</a>'s career and how a new generation is approaching the genre.</p><p>"Obviously <keyword id="12137579" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="bo-burnham" source="Orion">Bo Burnham</keyword>'s special is one of the great landmarks in stand-up comedy history," Apatow said during a TCA (Television Critics Association) panel on Tuesday over Zoom that was attended by Insider.</p><p>During the panel's Q&amp;A, Insider asked Apatow about the younger generation of comedians coming up now in Carlin's wake, including Burnham, who named-dropped Carlin in his 2011 song "Art is Dead." Burnham performed that song (which was part of his first special "Words Words Words") during a 2011 appearance on Paul Provenza's Showtime talk show "The Green Room," which also featured Apatow, Ray Romano, Garry Shandling, and Marc Maron.</p><p>Clips from the episode <a href="https://www.insider.com/bo-burnhams-career-bio-facts-to-know-2021-6#as-burnham-worked-on-his-tv-show-he-continued-making-comedy-appearances-like-the-2011-taping-of-the-green-room-9">have become popular among Burnham's fans</a> in the decade since it first aired. Burnham was 20 years old at the time, significantly younger than the powerhouse panelists in the room with him. He mentions Carlin during one riff on the title's chorus, singing, "We're rolling in dough, while Carlin rolls in his grave."</p><p>Carlin, who died in 2008, is summarized in the description of Apatow's upcoming documentary as "a cultural chameleon who is remembered as one of the most influential stand-up comics of all time." Apatow codirected the two-part documentary with Michael Bonfiglio, and it was produced by Carlin's daughter, Kelly.</p><p>Looking more broadly at the younger wave of people in comedy, Apatow says he thinks this generation of comics is "much more personal."</p><p>"There's a lot of personal storytelling and a lot of the comedians have podcasts, so they go and they tour and they have their set and they also talk for hours and hours on their podcast," he said. "So there's a very intimate relationship now between the modern comedian and the audience. It's very different. I love it. I think that it's great."</p><p>He continued: "I like knowing people. When I was a kid, I used to interview comedians in high school because I wanted to know more about them. I wanted to know the person they were that led to the stand-up material that they make."</p><p>"George Carlin's American Dream" will premiere this May on HBO, giving fans see "an intimate window into Carlin's personal life."</p>

Right now, we are going through a great time for comedy, a period which many are referring to as "<a href="http://www.vulture.com/2015/03/welcome-to-the-second-comedy-boom.html">The Second Comedy Boom.</a>"</p><p>Instead of bringing the likes of Louis C.K. or Amy Schumer through its doors, t<span>he National Comedy Center plans to stand out stands out by inviting audiences to come</span> in and watch the greatest comedians of the past perform in hologram form.  </p><p>The material performed on stage won't be new. <span style="line-height: 1.5em;">Tom Benson, the founder of the National Comedy Center, described it to the Times as </span><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">"a comedy club where folks can go back in time and witness a classic routine in a setting - God knows where it might have been - and experience that as if they were really there."</span></p><p>The comedians will be created by <a href="http://www.hologramusa.com/">Hologram USA</a>, a company that has also created the virtual likeness of <a href="http://www.hologramusa.com/news/virtual-buddy-holly-appear-new-touring-show/">Buddy Holly</a>, <a href="http://www.hologramusa.com/news/liberace-hologram-tour-world/">Liberace</a>, <a href="http://www.hologramusa.com/news/julian-assange-appears-united-states-live-onstage-hologram/">Julian Assange</a>, and <a href="http://www.hologramusa.com/#video">Jimmy Kimmel</a>. </p><p>The club hopes to bring back such comedy legends as Bob Hope, George Carlin, and Rodney Dangerfield. A new comedy club has come up with a way to watch dead comedians perform again

<p></p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div>We can't recommend defecating onto your hands two to three times per week to boost your immune system, but at least George Carlin didn't get polio.<p>In his 1999 stand-up comedy special "You People Are All Diseased," the wily old comic, then 71, released obscenity-laced frustrations that scientists have actually come to validate time and again.&#xa0;</p><p>As Carlin <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X29lF43mUlo">so eloquently states </a>in his special, <strong>"If you kill all the germs around you and live a completely sterile life, then when germs do come along you're not going to be prepared."</strong></p><p><span>Scientists have arrived at a similar conclusion. </span></p><p><span>Dubbed the "hygiene hypothesis," the theory argues&#xa0;</span><a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/heres-proof-that-being-too-clean-is-actually-harming-our-kids-2015-6">we should stop demonizing germs</a>, since being exposing to germs allows a person to build a more robust immune system.<span><br /></span></p><p>It's for that reason public health experts have recommended families <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/r-washing-dishes-by-hand-linked-to-fewer-allergies-in-kids-2015-2">wash dishes by hands</a>, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/afp-eating-peanuts-early-could-prevent-allergy-in-infants-2015-2">expose kids to low doses of allergens</a>,&#xa0;and let them roll around in the dirt every once in a while.&#xa0;</p><p>Or, you can take Carlin's approach:</p><p style="padding-left: 30px;">When I was a little boy in New York City in the 1940s, we swam in the Hudson River, and it was filled with raw sewage. OK? We swam in raw sewage - you know, to cool off. And at that time, the big fear was polio. Thousands of kids died from polio every year. But you know something? In my neighborhood, no one ever got polio. No one. Ever. You know why? This legendary comic captured why germaphobes are misguided in a single sentence

<p><strong>Milan, Italy</strong> — Italy's national election is starting tomorrow, and all of the talk is about exactly one man: Beppe Grillo.</p>
<p>Grillo is a comedian-turned-populist, anti-bank, anti-Euro crusader. He makes bankers queasy.</p>
<p>And he's surging in the polls.</p>
<p>Really. There are no official public polls right now, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/beppe-grillo-surge-2013-2">but we've seen private polls</a> that get passed around by bankers and in just the last several days his support is booming. He's adding support by the day.</p>
<p>For awhile we've tried to figure out who a US equivalent to Grillo would be. Some have compared him to a George Carlin or Bill Maher type. But actually an apt comparison would be the pseudonymous Tyler Durden, who runs the well-known Wall Street doom blog ZeroHedge.</p>
<p>The key thing is that Grillo's own success as a public figure started from his blog, <a href="http://www.beppegrillo.it/">Blog di Beppe Grillo</a>. It's from that blog that his railing on bankers and politicians became a movement, which has now turned into a huge political party gathering support by the day.</p>
<p>Yesterday his "Tsunami" tour rolled into Rome, and drew a crowd of at least 100,000. The mainstream politicians are attacking him.</p>
<p>For those around the world who are frustrated by bankers and elite institutions, the current avatar of frustration is Beppe Grillo.</p>

He'll create short-form digital content that will be updated several times each day on HBO Now, the company's new standalone streaming service.</p><p>"Jon Stewart led a revolution that changed the face of TV comedy on the 'Daily Show,'" Michael Lombardo, the president of HBO programming, said in a statement. "He graced our network nearly 20 years ago, so we're thrilled to welcome back his immense talents in this next chapter of his career."</p><p>"I'm so excited to be working with Richard [Plepler], Michael and the entire HBO family," Stewart said in a statement. "Appearing on television 22 minutes a night clearly broke me. I'm pretty sure I can produce a few minutes of content every now and again."</p><p style="padding-left: 30px;">Jon Stewart and HBO have concluded an exclusive four-year production pact, it was announced today by Michael Lombardo, president, HBO Programming. Jon Stewart is going to HBO

<p dir="ltr"><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image"></div><p></p></div></div>"In America, they really do mythologize people when they die."</p>
<p dir="ltr">So said Robin Williams, in a <a href="http://www.theguardian.com/film/2010/sep/20/robin-williams-worlds-greatest-dad-alcohol-drugs">2010 interview</a> with the Guardian. He wasn't kidding. But at the risk of adding yet another voice to the extraordinary chorus that's been singing his praises since news of his death became public last night, it seems worth pointing out: Williams, without quite realizing it, was a prophet of the internet era.</p>
<p dir="ltr">The actor-comedian's suicide came as a shock to a lot of us, but maybe we just weren't paying close enough attention. That it could be hard to concentrate with Williams around was in some ways was his greatest achievement. He was a master of misdirection - his comedy, at its best, was a torrent of fragmentary diversion. A one-man world wide web.</p>
<p dir="ltr">Without quite meaning to be, Williams was a messenger, a visitor from the frantic future we all inhabit now, a Hawaiian-shirt-wearing harbinger of the dizzying, always-on, synapse-scrambling digital era.  </p>
<p dir="ltr">Watching his <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wpGtgZw5Z_U">early comedy performances</a> was a breathtaking, if exhausting, experience. He wasn't profound or political like a lot of comics (Lenny Bruce, Richard Pryor). He didn't hold up a mirror to our quirks (George Carlin, Jerry Seinfeld) or lay bear his own (Woody Allen, Larry David), and he didn't tell jokes (Don Rickles) or blurt out the unsayable (Joan Rivers, Sam Kinison).</p>
<p dir="ltr">Williams channeled the culture. His cut-and-paste style echoed what rappers were doing with samples, and like them, he occasionally got into trouble for borrowing material. In the early days, other comics sometimes refused to perform when Williams was in a comedy club, such was the fear that their stuff would make its way into his act. In a great 1991 Rolling Stone <a href="http://www.rollingstone.com/movies/features/robin-williams-fears-of-a-clown-20140811#ixzz3AC1nquy3">profile</a>, he copped to the charge. "If you watch comedy eight hours a day, something will register, and it'll come out," he explained. "And if it happened, I said, 'I apologize. I'll pay you for this.'"</p>
<p dir="ltr">Maybe Williams was ahead of his time on that score as well. It's hard to call him a thief when he was so clearly built to soak up and repurpose whatever came his way. And he wasn't alone. Growing up in the 1970s, I certainly stole from him freely, and so did just about every kid I knew. In some ways, we learned from Robin Williams how to inhabit the reality we're faced with now, how to surf the cross-currents of a Cuisinart culture.</p>
<p dir="ltr">Williams' act wasn't comedy exactly. He was a human cable package with a sticky remote, his performance less stand-up routine than shamanic trance, ricocheting between snippets and identities, a breakneck tapdance through what the writer George Trow called "the context of no context." ADHD as high art.</p>
<p dir="ltr">His humor wasn't what you'd call relatable, giving audiences that flash of recognition most comedians aim for. At least not at the time.</p>
<p dir="ltr">It's only now, in retrospect - in the era of broadband and "an app for that," Twitter and subreddits, and binge-watching and channel-surfing and emojis and Google Now and instant everything everywhere at all times - that we can really see where he was coming from, acknowledge the debt we owe him and spot the warning flares he was sending up.</p>
<p dir="ltr">Williams got his start back when most people still had a handful of TV channels to choose from (only half of which reliably worked). Then came browsers, and hypertext, and mash-ups.</p>
<p dir="ltr">It's hard not to wonder how he felt as the culture caught up with him, upstaged him, and perhaps made him a little obsolete. A lot of us were surprised by Williams' response, that shift toward sentimentality. Let's admit it, there are some pretty cringey moments in his clip reel. But now it's a little easier to imagine where that may have come from. When Williams felt things, he felt them deeply. Which is probably why he became so good at not feeling them, at dancing along that synaptical tightrope, at being on, as A.O. Scott <a href="http://www.nytimes.com/2014/08/12/movies/robin-williams-an-improvisational-genius-forever-present-in-the-moment.html?_r=0">put it</a> in The New York Times.   </p>
<p dir="ltr">Like it or not, in a way we're all living in his brain now, with its restlessness and hairpin turns and constant velocity. Check your favorite social media feed, and you can bounce in classic Robin Williams style from one non sequitur to the next, from cat pics to cop shootings, from crucifictions to waffle tacos.</p>
<p dir="ltr">It's not an easy place to be: funny and inspiring, but also bewildering, unnerving and sometimes very sad.</p>

Robin Williams Taught Us How To Live In The Internet Age

<p></p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div>The best way to gauge Hollywood success is to look at what someone has lined up next, and with Judd Apatow's "Girls" coming to a close on HBO, it's time for the producer to show what he's got for an encore. Enter popular stand-up comedian <a href="http://www.imdb.com/name/nm2803399/?ref_=nv_sr_1" target="_blank">Pete Holmes</a>.<p>The 37-year-old best known for his comedy specials and Nerdist podcast, "You Made It Weird with Pete Holmes," has a style that couldn't be further from "Girls" creator/star Lena Dunham, but one thing the two have in common is exploring destructive relationships from their past. With Apatow's guidance, Holmes looks to be the next to find mainstream fame thanks to opening up his soul.</p><p>"Crashing" (premiering Sunday on HBO) is loosely based on Holmes' real divorce from his wife while he was trying to get his career in comedy off the ground in his late 20s. Holmes plays a fictional version of himself, who after learning that his wife (played by <a href="http://www.imdb.com/name/nm1944055/?ref_=tt_cl_t2" target="_blank">Lauren Lapkus</a>) has been cheating on him and wants a divorce, dedicates his life to stand-up. Dealing with all the growing pains of making a mark in the New York City comedy scene, he ends every episode crashing on the couches of the comics he encounters, including major players like Artie Lang and T.J. Miller. &#xa0;&#xa0;</p><p>Business Insider talked to Holmes about getting the attention of Apatow (who along with producing "Crashing" also directed the pilot), how truthfully the show depicts life as a comic, and how he thinks his ex-wife will react to the show.</p><p><strong>Jason Guerrasio: It sounds like you planted the seed for "Crashing" when Judd came on your old TBS talk show, right?</strong></p><p><strong>Pete Holmes:</strong> Yeah. It's a very surreal thing. Judd a couple years ago did a sketch on my talk show "The Pete Holmes Show" where I pitched him bad movies. But I knew we would probably improvise too, because when you do stuff with Judd Apatow that's what you do. So we were doing it and half way through we started improvising and he asked me what my actual movie idea is and I swear to you he did it to put me on my heels. But he was like, "Really, what is your story?" and I was like, "Well, I grew up religious, I married the first girl I ever dated, she left me when I was 28, and I just fell face-first into the New York comedy scene because I had nowhere else to go." And he said, "That's too sad, nobody wants to watch that."</p><p>But I don't think Judd or I consider that the actual real pitch. It might have planted the seed. Six months later my talk show was canceled and I had the idea for this show. I love doing silly things, but I thought what is the story I can tell better than anybody and I realized it was my story. I called my manager, who knows Judd, and I tried to see if he had any free time to meet me and they said Judd had 15 minutes on Friday morning, in New York. I was in LA. So I flew the next day to New York, got a hotel, woke up at like five in the morning the next day, I didn't want to miss it. I went to the set of "Trainwreck" and we talked for 10 minutes and for the last five minutes I told him about the show. But the major thing that I changed was in every episode I would be staying with a different comedian. There's this troubadour lifestyle of a comedian. In real life, T.J. Miller is one of my best friends and I'll maybe see him for two or three days in a row and then I won't see him for four months. That's just how our lives are. So I'm excited at the possibility of representing that kind of vibe and also showing comedy in a new way.</p><p></p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div><strong>Guerrasio: That was the big question I had after watching the first few episodes: Are more established comics as giving of their time to young comics as you portray them to be on this show?</strong><p><strong>Holmes:</strong> Yes. But a key point here is this is through my experience. I think there are social climbers or back-stabbers or just people who put themselves before everyone else, there are those out there. But it all comes down to which scene you're in and who you end up befriending. People like Bill Burr and Jim Gaffigan and Zach Galifianakis and Sarah Silverman, they were all amazing and helpful to me. I remember writing Bill Burr an email and I was just like, "Hey man, I'm moving to New York, we met this one time, and if you have any advice let me know." He wrote me, if you printed it out, like a three-page reply of what I should do. So I try when people write me on Facebook to pay that forward. So when Artie Lang in the pilot says, "Hey, I'll buy you a slice of pizza," that straight-up happens. When my wife left me, in real life, T.J. Miller was like, "I'm shooting a movie in Pittsburgh, I'll fly you out and get you a hotel room," and I spent a week with him. We would go out and do shows together at night. All that time I would have been moping and listening to Radiohead, he was like, "Let's do this." And this was a guy who was working, it wasn't like he was on vacation. Now I'm sure there's someone out there writing a show about how nobody helps anybody, but who wants to watch that? [<em>Laughs</em>]</p><p><strong>Guerrasio: But you show the other side of the coin, too. In the pilot your character goes to a club and he's told to go onstage since another comic is a no-show. But then the comic shows up afterward and isn't happy that you took his spot. &#xa0; </strong></p><p><strong>Holmes:</strong> I mean, this goes against what I was saying, but there would be guys when I was coming up who would be mean to people, and this is a quote, "Because if you quit there's one less person in my way." It's very rare, but they existed.&#xa0;But going on because someone didn't show, I've had that happen. That was another thing I was really excited to show in this. When a comedian is at a club and what, say, your father thinks is a big opportunity - someone isn't there and they need you to go on - but the truth is you don't want to go on. [<em>Laughs</em>] And it's not because your wife just left you, it's because you know you're not good enough yet. And that stuff would happen. There were moments when I would be like, "I'm not ready for this," and you go up and you are awful.</p><p></p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div><strong>Guerrasio: What's it like going through the process of getting Judd to take your project? Because he's constantly hearing pitches, how do you become the standout?</strong><p><strong>Holmes:</strong> I wish I could tell you names, but to spare anyone who is sensitive about it I'll keep it vague. I remember when we were scouting for the pilot Judd would mention that around the same time I was talking to him some of my comedy heroes were also pitching him. The names were insane. And it was there that it became real that "Holy s---, I did really get the golden ticket." And golden ticket isn't fame or fortune, it's just the opportunity.</p><p>But in getting to know Judd now I've realized it's not the pitch that gets him. The real thing is when he says, "Go write it." The first thing he said to me was "Go write 20 pages about everything you remember from that time in your life. Every embarrassing story, every detail." And I sent it to him the next day. And then he said, "Write the pilot." And I sent it to him two days later. He liked it, but even that didn't convince him. He said, "Write another episode." And I did. I wrote five full episodes and then we pitched it.</p><p><strong>Guerrasio: Did you feel at all that you had to notify your ex-wife that you were making this?</strong></p><p><strong>Holmes:</strong> My ex and I haven't spoken since we split, which was almost 10 years ago. She's off and happy and I'm off and happy. The reaching out, there wasn't really one. But what there is, I've always joked that if this had been a movie that was literally about my divorce, a recreation, you would have been rooting for my wife to get out of the relationship. [<em>Laughs</em>] So "Crashing" is fictional. Lauren Lapkus really informed the character quite a bit and we improvised a lot. I doubt my ex will watch it, I don't know, but if she does I was very, very careful to make her very sympathetic. You see that she needs to get out for reasons that have nothing to do with Pete being a bad person. She's in that interesting conundrum of "This is a good person and I love this person as a friend, but I need something else." So all of the real therapy I've had and what I say on my podcast - which can be like therapy - that had gone into the show and the way that it manifested was trying to write the story from the other person's perspective.</p><p><strong>Guerrasio: And I don't want to give anything way, but Lauren as your wife in episode five really shines. </strong></p><p><strong>Holmes:</strong> And that scene in that episode that you're referring to, I have to say, would be fun for my ex-wife to see. [<em>Laughs</em>] She never said anything that Lauren says, but she would go, "There it is."</p><p><strong>Guerrasio: You are not a political comic, but has your comedy changed at all since the election?</strong></p><p><strong>Holmes:</strong> I have never been political, which for a straight white man that's kind of a byproduct of privilege growing up that I was kind of like, "Who cares who the president is, everything is coming up privilege." [<em>Laughs</em>] But now things are so scary and crazy and I have to say I'm not a fan of Trump at all. I don't agree with him in any way. I did a show in Ohio the day after the election, and I didn't have any Trump jokes, I barely have any right now, but I mentioned that I knew this is a tense time in the country and if it's okay with you I would just like to not think about it. I think about it all day, so for one hour we can just make faces and do silly sounds and just laugh. Don't get me wrong, if George Carlin were alive, how great would it be to go see what he would say? But sometimes pure silliness can be what the doctor ordered. How comedian Pete Holmes used his divorce to create HBO's next big comedy show

<p>The article features author Richard D. Lewis' series of "National Communication Patterns". Each diagram in the series shows how people from a given country tend to communicate, including how they decide when to speak or stay silent, choose their words or emotions, or how to influence others.</p>
<p>Even the most experienced travelers will be surprised by how many different communication styles exist across the globe. Especially between countries they had thought were similar. For example, If you think Americans communicate just like the British, or at least like Canadians, you should think again.</p>
<p>It might just scare you when you recall the times you negotiated, managed, presented-<em>or communicated anything</em>-in any of these countries, but didn't know what you didn't know.</p>
<p>Well, you're not alone. Since it was published on March 26<sup>th</sup>, the article has had over half a million views. That's an impressive number. In part, it's a testament to how important the right intercultural skills are in today's global business environment.</p>
<p><span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;">Since many of you are seeing these diagrams for the first time, here's an important cautionary note. You know how David Letterman will look into the camera before someone performs an outrageous stunt and say, "Please don't try this at home, or without professional supervision"? Well, beware: For all though the diagrams are powerful tools when used correctly, failure to do so can cause problems - including mistrust, damaged relationships, and lost business.  </span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;">In this and future blogs, we'll take a "deep dive" into many of these diagrams giving you the insights you need to get to more results with anyone, anywhere.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;">So let's begin with a few big-ticket items that will start us on the right track: We'll introduce you to your own skepticism, you'll learn to recognize a trick your brain plays on you that I call the "I thought so!" Syndrome, you'll see how the diagrams can help you understand the madness to someone's method, and finally you'll gain a new appreciation for the importance of context.</span></p>
<p><strong style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;">1) IF YOU'RE SKEPTICAL, IT MIGHT BE YOUR CULTURE SHOWING</strong></p>
<p><span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;">In a society such as the U.S. A. where advertising rules the day and false claims run rampant, being skeptical about something you've never heard before is a natural reaction. Add a bit of cultural superiority along with some occasional cynicism, and you have a distinctly American communication pattern. For example, when we say, "You must be kidding!" it's often said with intensity, but seldom do we mean it literally. What we're usually thinking is "How can that possibly be true? I don't think it is, but if you can convince me, I'm willing to listen to what you have to say".</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;">It's always difficult to accept information that challenges fundamental beliefs. But with the right mindset and a strong desire to always try to see things from someone else's perspective, even the most skeptical American can become more adept at intercultural business.</span></p>
<p><strong style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;">2) THE  "I THOUGHT SO!" SYNDROME</strong></p>
<p>Let's say that you've had experience working with the French. While looking at the French diagram, you start nodding your head in agreement when you read, "Be prepared for vigorous logical debate".</p>
<p><span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;">"No kidding!" you think to yourself.  "They always argue about everything!"</span><span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;"> </span></p>
<p>Because you're feeling vindicated, you forward this to your coworkers with the comment, "No wonder everybody hates the French!" And that's where the "I thought so!" syndrome grabs hold.</p>
<p>You see, without realizing it you just experienced a phenomenon that cognitive scientists call confirmation bias. It's when you encounter new information, but your mind filters out anything that doesn't support your existing belief.</p>
<p><span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;">But the real insidious part to a cognitive bias is that you actually begin to think your opinion was "validated" by an expert. As a result, you now have less tolerance for the French than before!</span></p>
<p><strong>3) COMMUNICATION PATTERNS - IS THERE A MADNESS TO THEIR METHODS?</strong></p>
<p>You'll notice arrowheads on the diagram outlines. These show the various phases of the communication as the discussion progresses, including verbal and non-verbal behaviors, reactions, responses, justifications, etc.</p>
<p>The vertical height of each diagram is labeled the "Word Base" and has also been referred to as the "conversation range". But these terms are vague and don't convey what's actually taking place.  So instead let's think of the diagram's height as the "Number of Words Spoken" at any given point in the discussion. </p>
<p>Although individual personalities, preferences and experiences affect communication, the diagrams transcend those differences and instead highlight the behaviors common among those in the group. Culture after all is the very definition of shared collective wisdom. Its influence is so ingrained in our psyche that our conscious minds are seldom aware of any influence at all.</p>
<p>You know all those things we take for granted and call common sense? Things like professionalism, courteousness, accountability, efficiency and candor? Can we assume that these are all universally accepted values?  Well as it turns out, not so much. The funny thing about common sense is that much of it isn't as common as we've been lead to believe.</p>
<p>Take for instance the recent Malaysian Airlines Flight #370 tragedy. Many have criticized the Malaysian authorities for repeatedly giving ambiguous and noncommittal statements. <em>How can the authorities behave like that when so many families are desperately waiting for updates on the situation?</em></p>
<p>But turn on CNN for a few hours and you'll soon notice how often they need to correct something they reported earlier. In fact just last week on The Daily Show, Jon Stewart showed a CNN video clip where the anchorwoman corrected a news story…that was broadcast less than a minute earlier!</p>
<p>So why is it that we'll tolerate behaviors that prize speed over accuracy, but we have no tolerance for someone who has values that place such a high priority on accurate reporting that they'd sooner evade answering questions now than have to admit they were wrong later on?</p>
<p>Or could it be this simple: We misjudge behaviors when we don't realize they incorporate values and beliefs that are different from our own?</p>
<p>And that's precisely what's at the heart of most intercultural miscommunications. You see, the best way to reduce any "madness to their method" is to understand the there is a method to their madness.</p>
<p><strong>4) CONTEXT IS EVERYTHING</strong></p>
<p>There's an old Finnish joke about an American who flies to Helsinki to meet with his customer. After a long day of meetings, the American and the Finnish customer decide to go out for drinks. After about 20 minutes of drinking vodka in complete silence, the American finally speaks up and says, "So Jukka, Cheers!" At which point, Jukka argues, "Wait a moment. Did we come here to talk, or did we come here to drink?"</p>
<p>Now take a look at the Finnish diagram versus the American diagram, and you'll see some remarkable differences. The Finns are very succinct (e.g., small diagram height) during all phases of the discussion, and get even more succinct when summarizing at the end of the discussion. On the other hand, Americans are not only more verbose throughout the discussion than the Finns, but will increase their use of words to stress a point, or responds to stress. And although Americans by their own standards finish the discussion more succinctly than any other time during the discussion, it's still considerably more verbose than the Finns ever communicate.</p>

<p>So the next time you overhear someone say that all Germans are rude, the British are wishy-washy, <span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;">or that you can't trust anyone from [</span><em style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;">insert nationality of your choice here</em><span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;">], consider what George Carlin once said,</span></p>
<p><em>"Have you ever noticed that anybody driving slower than you is an idiot, and anyone going faster than you is a maniac?"</em></p>
<p>George's observation makes us chuckle because in some odd way, we relate to what he's saying. Who hasn't been convinced at one time that they were right and everyone else -faster or slower - was wrong?</p>
<p>Look at it this way:</p>
<p>-   <em>Americans think Germans are rude because the Germans are always too blunt.</em></p>
<p>-   <em>The Germans think Italians are rude because they waste everyone's time with too much talking. </em></p>
<p>-   <em>Italians think the Japanese are rude because the Japanese won't make an effort to explain their position.</em></p>
<p>-   <em> The Japanese think Americans are rude because Americans will say anything to anyone, in front of everyone.</em></p>
<p><em> </em><span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;">…And around and around it goes.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;">When it comes to communicating with people from other cultures that have very different beliefs, priorities and behaviors, it's best to not think in terms of right and wrong. But to think in terms of how its' different.</span></p>

The truth is, I really love making these.  I skipped doing one last year and I missed it. This one is different from the recent others.  For one thing, it was shot in a nightclub instead of a theater.  I love doing the theater shows.  When I was a kid, my favorite thing in the world was Richard Pryor's concert films.  The idea of being a comedian and doing a "concert" was a real goal for me.  Performing in a theater expands your material and opens you up as a performer.  The pressure of playing to thousands of people, I found, always makes you better.  And every concert hall I've played has made me feel like I'm getting a whiff of that city or town's history.  The whole thing can be very exhilarating.</span><br><br><span>But Nightclubs, comedy clubs, is where comedy is born and where comedy, standup comedy, truly lives.  Going back to Abraham Lincoln, who was probably America's first comedian, Americans have enjoyed gathering at night in small packed (and once smokey) rooms, drinking themselves a bit numb and listening to each other say wicked, crazy, silly, wrongful, delightful, upside-down, careless, offensive, disgusting, whimsical things.   Sometimes in long-winded, red faced hyperbole, sometimes in carefully crafted circular, intentionally false and misleading argument.  Sometimes in well-chiseled perfectly timed trickery of verbiage.  Pun-poetry.  One line, one off, half thoughts.  Half truths.  Non-truths.  Broad and hilariously wrongful generalizations, exaggerated prejudices and criticism of nothing and everything while a couple over here shares a pitcher of sangria, this table of guys order round after round of beers. These women over here are having vodka and cranberry.  This guy drinks club soda and sits alone. He actually came for the comedy.  It's a club.  It's a bar.  It's late at night.  No one here is being responsible. These are the things we do when we are DONE working and being citizens. We go to a comedy club and pay a bit of money to laugh harder than we ever do anywhere else.</span><br><br><span>That is the standup comedy that I've been doing for almost thirty years.  I have been working theater (and now arena) stages for the last nine of those thirty years but the amount of hours I've spent on a club stage outnumber the theater stage hours by more than I can figure.</span><br><br><span>I've been on comedy club stages probably more than I've stood on any other kind of spot in my entire life.  I started in the Boston comedy scene, on ground that had been laid by great comedians like Steve Sweeney, Steven Wright, Barry Crimmins, Ron Lynch, Kevin Meany, Don Gavin, back in 1985 when I was 18 years old.  I skipped college (still regret it), worked shitty jobs (will never regret that)  and spent every single night at any comedy club in Boston I could finagle my way into. I would watch every single comedian and I would BEG to get on stage.</span><br><br><span>In 1989 I moved to New York.  I discovered a bursting comedy club scene, where you could literally do 8 shows on a </span><span class="aBn" data-term="goog_1742787886"><span class="aQJ">saturday</span></span><span> night. (I remember Ray Romano held the record at 9 shows).</span><br><br><span>It was a glorious time for standup comedy clubs.  Great comics everywhere. Colin Quinn. Mike Sweeney. Joy Behar. John Stewart. Charlie Barnett. Ray Romano. Dave Chapelle. Chris Rock. Brett Butler. Brian Regan.</span><br><br><span>All working out every night in clubs all over the city.  There was the Improv on 44th street.  On 1st Avenue, Catch a Rising Star and around the corner on 2nd ave, the Comic Strip (still there).  Carolines was on the Seaport then.  And in the Village we had the Comedy Cellar (still there), the Boston Comedy Club and the Village Gate.</span><br><br><span>I spent my early twenties bouncing from one stage to the other, from </span><span class="aBn" data-term="goog_1742787887"><span class="aQJ">8pm</span></span><span> till about </span><span class="aBn" data-term="goog_1742787888"><span class="aQJ">4am</span></span><span>, when Dave Attell, Kevin Brennan, Nick DiPaolo and I would head to a diner and eat breakfast.</span><br><br><span>The money was terrible.  About ten dollars per show on the weeknights, fifty a show on the weekends.  So every other week you had to leave town and work in another city. You'd go live in Atlanta, Columbus, Phoenix,  Tampa, for a week.  Most clubs would put you up in a condo behind the club and you'd work the whole week.  </span><span class="aBn" data-term="goog_1742787889"><span class="aQJ">Tuesday</span></span><span> thru </span><span class="aBn" data-term="goog_1742787890"><span class="aQJ">Sunday</span></span><span>, two shows </span><span class="aBn" data-term="goog_1742787891"><span class="aQJ">Friday</span></span><span>, three shows </span><span class="aBn" data-term="goog_1742787892"><span class="aQJ">Saturday</span></span><span>.  You could make about 700 a week as an opening act.  A good headliner might make 2500 or 3,000 but that was rare.  I worked in comedy clubs all over the country and I think I actually remember every single club.  My favorite clubs were the smelly little beer soaked places with dim lighting and low ceilings.  Go Bananas in Cincinnati. The Brokerage in Long Island (still there)  Penguins in Cedar Rapids.   The Comedy Underground in Seattle.</span><br><br><span>Then there were chain comedy clubs that were always too antiseptic and suburban.  Some of them were literally inside of a mall next to a sunglass hut.  The Improvs, the Funny Bones.</span><br><br><span>There were some comedy clubs around the country that were legendary.  That lasted out the death of comedy in the 90s.  The independent and truly great rooms where you can still smell the cigarette smoke exhaled by Bill Hicks.  The Acme in Minneapolis. The Punchline in Atlanta.  The Punchline (not related) in San Francisco.  Cobbs in San Fran.  The Laff Stop in Houston.  Zanies in Chicago.  Charlie Goodnights in Raleigh.  The Comedy Works in Denver.  These were the Meccas. When you could get a week at Acme, you know you could continue having the will to do this shit for another few months.  A week at the Punchline in San Fran could get you through the next week at Harvey's in Portland.</span><br><span>There were club owners that were part of Comedy History.  Who knew how to shape comedy.  Mark Babbit, Lewis Lee, Manny Dworman, Lucien Hold, Silver Friedman, Bud Friedman, Ron Osborne, others.</span><br><br><span>I spent all of my mid to late 20s and thirties working out in places like these.</span><br><br><span>Later when I moved to Los Angeles, I discovered a scene out there that was creative and fun and also steeped in show business history. You could see Norm Macdonald. Charles Fleicher. Robert Schimmel.</span><br><br><span>In LA they have coffee houses and very cool rooms like Largo, where you can bring your notebook on stage and try just about anything.</span><br><br><span>People like Andy Kindler, Kathy Griffin, Patton Oswalt, Blaine Capatch, Craig Anton, Laura Kightlinger did outrageous stuff in those rooms.</span><br><br><span>I would sometimes go on stage at places like Mbar or Largo and come out with twenty minutes of new material, cheered on by the young, open and adaptive crowds of the "alternative" scene.  But I never believed those jokes until I took them to the Improv, where the more average and basic character of the audience would cut the new material down to about three jokes.</span><br><br><span>And then there was the Comedy Store.  I would take the last three remaining jokes to the store on Sunset.  Maybe ONE of those would get a chuckle.  And that joke, I knew, was the true treasure of the night.</span><br><br><span>I have always found the Comedy Store to be the most intimidating club of my life.  It is what I thought comedy clubs to be when I listened to Lenny Bruce records as a kid.  The black vinyl couches and chairs, the red formica stage.  Andrew Dice Clay on stage playing to fifteen people in open defiance of their hatred and funny as hell.   The Comedy Store is really show biz.  As in Milton Berle with his bow tie undone around his neck show business.   Mop your brow and say "tough crowd" show business.  A guy being beaten up in the parking lot show business.  The Comedy Store is where Pryor cut his teeth.  Letterman fought to get spots there.  George Carlin.  Eddie Murphy.   Marc Maron told me stories about living in the apartment behind the Store and how Sam Kinison pissed on his bed one night. This is the Comedy Store. The wonderful dark side of comedy.</span><br><br><span>The Comedy Store is the only club in the country that NEVER passed me when I auditioned.  I auditioned at many clubs where I didn't pass but I always went back and finally did pass. The Comedy Store NEVER passed me.  I just wasn't right for them.  I didn't start working there until I became well known enough to circumvent the audition process. Until I became one of those guys who can just walk into a nightclub and go on stage.</span><br><br><span>So why did I shoot my new special in this place?  I don't know.  Maybe because, after thirty years of doing comedy, the most exciting feeling for me is going on stage, not entirely sure it's going to go well.  To this day, when I work at the Store, I feel there's a one in three chance I might bomb.  Like bomb hard.  To a guy my age who has been doing it this long, that is exciting.   So over the last tour I did this year, I started doing shows at the Comedy Store "Main room" to feel it out. The staff of the club is excellent and they really know how to run a traditional room.  I loved working with them. Pauly Shore and his family were very gracious when we approached them about shooting my special there.</span><br><br><span>I really feel truly privileged to have shot this special on that stage.</span><br><br><span>Okay I didn't mean to write such a long thing about comedy clubs.  The point is I prepared the material for this special on club stages.  I went to the Cellar here in New York, and their new club, The Village Underground, about ten times a week with the occasional trip uptown to Gotham Comedy Club and "The Stand" on third avenue.  I went out to LA to put that spin on it, working Largo, the Improv and finally the Comedy Store, hammering this stuff together in front of late night comedy club audiences.  So it only seemed right to shoot it that way.</span><br><br><span>That's all.  I hope you enjoy the special.  Please see the movie "Boyhood".  It's a great piece of filmmaking and even literature. But if you expand that "us" to everyone in the path is the storm, they were spot on.  My family in Boston is part of us for me.
