However, if you think that the younger generation is switching jobs just to get a better pay cheque, you might be wrong. According to a new survey, <keyword id="19919711" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="gen-z" source="keywords">Gen Z</keyword> employees feel job satisfaction is more important than a fat pay cheque. Moreover, for many Gen Z professionals, work-life balance has become the make-or-break factor. The report also shows that almost half of them—47%, to be exact—are considering leaving their current jobs within the next two years, searching for something more fulfilling. <h2>What does your GenZ employee want?</h2>The study, carried out by the talent platform Unstop, surveyed over 5,350 Gen Z workers alongside 500 HR professionals to get a better picture of what this generation wants from the workplace. Work-life balance is another critical factor. Nearly half (47%) of young professionals say it’s something they carefully consider when looking at new opportunities. In reality, only 25% of Gen Zers see salary as the top motivator when changing jobs. The survey also uncovered another key ambition for Gen Z: a clear career path with opportunities for advancement. While many recruiters (44%) believe that company culture is more important to Gen Z than career progression, the truth is that this generation seeks a mix of both—a positive work culture, but also a chance to climb the ladder. By 2025, they’re expected to make up 27% of workers worldwide, according to the World Economic Forum. Adobe predicts this number will grow to 30% by 2030. In fact, Gen Z is projected to outnumber Baby Boomers in the workplace as early as this year (2024). A Glassdoor report recently said that by the end of this year, Gen Z workers will surpass Baby Boomers in numbers within the U.S. workforce.

In a recent incident, a manager took to X (earlier called Twitter) and shared how one of his Gen Z employees took a one-week vacation to the mountains after going through a breakup. However, contrary to his expectation, various X users started accusing him of trivialising mental health issues by such statements. Read on to know what exactly happened. <h2>"He had a breakup" </h2> The man's tweet read, "One of my Gen z team members suddenly declared 1 week leave. It was a critical time of the project so I tried to reason. He did not budge. The leave was because he had a breakup and he wanted to go to the mountains to forget the breakup." When a user commented that it is better to give people leaves than deadlines, the manager replied, "Believe me it was one way communication. I had to deal with the repercussions on project." Several other tweets followed that sided with the Gen Z employee. "So according to you, mental health is nothing," a user wrote while another commented, "That’s a perfect reason to declare leave. Business is business, will go on as will other things." <div type="image" title="google (27)" msid="115042080" hostid="261" sizebytes="295800"></div> <h2>"Gen Z does things differently" </h2> The man also clarified in one of the tweets that he didn't fire the Gen Z employee and even promoted him for his good work. He wrote, "Mate. No need to assume the worst. The guy is still in my team and has even been promoted for his good work. I was just stating how gen z’s are doing things differently." While most users schooled the manager, there were some who supported him as well. A user wrote, "I'm a younger Millennial &amp; I’m appalled by the lack of respect so many of my peers have for professors (I finished school late; many were ten years younger). It’s not much for older generations who GIVE these opportunities to expect a little bit of gratitude &amp; deference." In a similar incident, another company's manager's tweet went viral in which he shared a screenshot of how his Gen Z employee notified him that he will be on leave for a week. For most parts, Gen-Z merely wants to boot out micromanagement and workplace toxicity, something that has come to be deeply associated with mid-level management. Berghoff's response began with an on-screen caption that read, "Gen Z is finally starting to push back against corporate life" and she went on to explain she had gotten her first "corporate in office adult 9-to-5 job" that year, and had initially been excited about it, but realized after four months that she didn't want to do this "corporate drone thing" for the rest of her life.In the upload, she said she believed there were people in their 40s at the same company who were earning the same amount of money as her and "struggling to get by" and she questioned if this was all there was to life. She said she kept "pushing through with blind optimism" but ultimately decided she didn't want to continue the role any longer and left for "health reasons." Although she was struggling to pay bills, she said she was "happier doing odd jobs here and there.""So say whatever you want about Gen Z, but we're just finally putting our foot down about this corporate lifestyle, where you waste most of your life sitting in an office doing little to nothing," she said towards the end of the video, adding she would rather get the work done on her own time, and then get to live her life.Berghoff told Insider in an email exchange that she had stayed at the job for eight months before she officially quit.Her upload received a massive response, with 3.8 million views and over 11,600 comments, ranging from self-described Gen Z and millennial viewers who wrote they felt trapped by the 40-hour work week that consumed their lives without providing adequate financial reward. "I got asked what my dream job was recently and I said 'I don't dream of working for the rest of my life,'" one viewer wrote in a popular comment."Gen Z was raised to question things and there are so many things about office work that we see are pointless or could be done differently," Berghoff told Insider. Everyone else is settled with families and vacation homes, and I'm a recent graduate living in a little apartment in Dallas, Texas. This is what inspired me to join <a href="https://www.tiktok.com/@imdrebrown?lang=en">TikTok</a> in August 2021. I wanted to talk about my experience of being the only young person in a corporate working environment.My TikToks — which often involve me roleplaying Gen-Z and <keyword id="12095049" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="millennial" source="Orion">millennial</keyword> employees to mock the generational stereotypes — have become really popular on the app, and I've felt that by using humor to talk about important topics, like maintaining a work-life balance, I've been able to inspire my own generation and also bridge the gap between millennials and Gen Z, who both seem to enjoy my content. <h2>Generational discourse often goes viral on <keyword id="11894125" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="tiktok" source="Orion">TikTok</keyword>, so I decided to use the trend to educate people </h2>Stereotypes about Gen-Z and millennials are <a href="https://www.tiktok.com/tag/genz?lang=en">all</a> <a href="https://www.tiktok.com/tag/millennial?lang=en">over</a> <a href="https://www.insider.com/gen-z-vs-millennials-diss-tracks-skinny-jeans-side-part-3">TikTok.</a> Millennials, who range in age from 26 to 41 in 2022, <a href="https://www.pewresearch.org/fact-tank/2019/01/17/where-millennials-end-and-generation-z-begins/">according to the Pew Research Center</a>, joke that Gen-Z, <a href="https://www.insiderintelligence.com/insights/generation-z-facts/">born between 1997 and 2012</a>, is a generation obsessed with <a href="https://www.tiktok.com/@leaamah/video/6918019773351726342?_r=1&amp;_t=8RJU2C4KyhC&amp;social_sharing=v1">star signs</a> and <a href="https://www.tiktok.com/@karissa_yates/video/7055064450184776966?_r=1&amp;_t=8RJU72z7DqY&amp;social_sharing=v1">TikTok dances.</a> Meanwhile Gen-Z mock millennials for being <a href="https://www.insider.com/gen-z-dragging-millennials-on-tiktok-harry-potter-zoomers-twitter-2020-6">way too into Harry Potter and taking photos of their coffee</a>.The way Gen-Z employees conduct themselves in the workplace has also become a sort of meme, with people saying that <a href="https://vm.tiktok.com/ZMLCUaU3s/">we don't like to work hard</a> or <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-genz-will-change-workplace-future-of-work-2021-12?r=US&amp;IR=T">know how to function in a professional environment</a>. I personally feel like there's some truth to many stereotypes about generational differences. When I speak to my parents and grandparents, for example, it feels like work meant everything to them. They'd put everything aside to complete assignments on time and get good raises and promotions.However, I think a lot of Gen-Z employees value mental health and life outside of work more than climbing the career ladder. In my videos, I often over-exaggerate this Gen-Z stereotype for comedic effect. I've made a lot of sketch-style videos, where I'd play the character of a Gen-Z student in a job interview, and talk about how I <a href="https://www.tiktok.com/@imdrebrown/video/7081389789907471662?is_copy_url=1&amp;is_from_webapp=v1&amp;lang=en">don't want colleagues to call me outside of office hours</a>, or how I'm prepared to <a href="https://www.tiktok.com/@imdrebrown/video/7082873379841215790?is_copy_url=1&amp;is_from_webapp=v1&amp;lang=en">be bold and ask for a higher salary</a>. Even though my videos aren't entirely serious, young people have still told me that I've encouraged them to set boundaries at work and helped them to feel more entitled to healthy working life. <h2>My TikToks have helped people across different generations to learn from each other, and brands are taking notice </h2>When I first started making TikToks, I wanted to use my experience in banking to educate other Gen-Z professionals about how to become successful. I initially made more serious videos, giving advice about how to format your <a href="https://www.tiktok.com/@imdrebrown/video/7018588742545935621?is_copy_url=1&amp;is_from_webapp=v1&amp;lang=en">resume</a> and how to maintain a <a href="https://www.tiktok.com/@imdrebrown/video/7031919715966569774?is_copy_url=1&amp;is_from_webapp=v1&amp;lang=en">strict daily routine</a>. However, my TikToks weren't performing well until I started using humor. When I put out a few TikToks about <a href="https://www.tiktok.com/@imdrebrown/video/7044596788170558767?is_copy_url=1&amp;is_from_webapp=v1&amp;lang=en">slacking off at your job</a>, particularly <a href="https://www.tiktok.com/@imdrebrown/video/7044170899175591215?is_copy_url=1&amp;is_from_webapp=v1&amp;lang=en">when working from home during the pandemic</a>, they started to receive hundreds of thousands of views each. I realized that I could use a more entertaining format to answer the same questions about corporate life and becoming employed. I now have 228,000 followers who I call my "corporate baddies," because I've found that using slang and relatable language has engaged my younger audience a lot more. I'm really passionate about bringing diversity into the corporate world by encouraging young talent, and I've found that my funny videos have made professional life seem more accessible to them.I've also noticed that millennials, as well as Gen-Z employees, really enjoy my content, and it's inspired them to create work-life boundaries too, and to form a new mindset around their jobs. From making my videos, I've learned that Gen Z and millennials actually see eye to eye on a lot of things. In my comments section on TikTok, older and younger people have started sharing advice and learning from one another, which has been really wonderful. Thanks to the following I've grown on my platform, I'm now able to earn money from social media on top of the income I earn at my job. Over the last four months, I've made six figures from brand deals with companies like Google, Microsoft, and <a href="https://www.tiktok.com/@linkedin/video/7077986039364603182?_r=1&amp;_t=8REmAATQv07&amp;social_sharing=v1">LinkedIn</a>. I'm 22 and make viral TikToks mocking Gen Z and millennials at work. I've learned that despite the stereotypes, we're not all that different.

Moonlighting is by no means a new concept. Before it assumed its current notoriety in the media thanks to its wide prevalence in the IT industry, drivers, cleaners and maids have been augmenting their incomes by moonlighting, sometimes even doing things they are not trained to do. Even within professional circles such as advertising, media, education and healthcare, moonlighting has been quite widely prevalent in <keyword id="3658" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="india" source="Orion">India</keyword>. Today, in the tech industry, moonlighting is the biggest open secret. This is predominantly a result of its work from anywhere (WFA) flexibility and salary structures that have not been revised for decades now, and are out of sync with inflation and the cost of living. Social media has bolstered the impact of moonlighting, making it a conversation across platforms. Leaders engaging in this conversation with a strong tone have been questioned and berated by the new generation of the workforce. The generational shift in mindset has been transforming the future of work. There are enough non-traditional traits of Gen-Z in the realm of work, workplace and evolving trends. Every 6-8 years, a new generation of the workforce enters with a different mindset. This accelerated with the pandemic-induced hybrid workforce evolution and is transforming the way of work. The predictability quotient has considerably reduced except for one thing that is certain - evolution. Moving towards a digital ecosystem has been a blessing. But was it the first flash of red light? Seamless linkages across Aadhaar, <keyword id="61610" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="pan" source="Orion">PAN</keyword> and PF in some cases brought a few such cases into the public domain. Nonetheless, moonlighting became a swift and easy choice for most employees to supplement their incomes with the rising inflation. With the pandemic, hybrid work policies, WFA mannerisms, quiet quitting, quiet firing, and moonlighting picked up momentum. According to HR experts, the incidence of moonlighting has increased in the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic in 2020, with people wanting to earn more money in the face of job losses, inflation or having more time as a result of working from home. However, <keyword id="115437" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="india-inc-" source="Orion">India Inc.</keyword> did not anticipate moonlighting to attain such a gigantic proportion so quickly. Other reasons could be the entrepreneurial bug that has bitten all tech employees alike, the need for higher incomes and lastly the demand for flexibility in workplaces. As per some unofficial estimates, despite a return-to-office mandate, less than 15% of the employees turn up to work, especially at the junior level. This impacts mid-level managers as they have a lesser incentive to return to office. However, there is no clarity on what level the laid-off employees involved in moonlighting fell under - entry, middle or senior. If it were at the entry level, it may just be possible that the salaries were lower compared to the cost of living in major cities. That made staying at home and working for two jobs a better proposition for them. While for mid- and senior-level employees, it could be that they got more exciting projects, helping them enhance their skill sets and of course supplementing their income. From a broader lens, for organisations, it is an ethical and moral issue concerning intellectual property. It might just affect productivity due to increasing fatigue and stress. From a legal standpoint, if the contract forbids moonlighting, it is a strict NO. A person may work more than one job in India without breaking the law unless prohibited by the employment contract. However, section 60 of the Factories Act bars dual employment for an adult worker. All in all, moonlighting is an ethical issue. It becomes a logical thing to do in India, where overtime pay is an alien concept and plentiful employees are underpaid on full-time jobs. The war of talent is real and is deeply impacting employers. Employees who are part of the skilled working population are spoilt for choice with an ‘abundance mindset’. Moonlighting in today’s world is going to stay. What is needed is not confrontation but collaboration between employer and employee. After all, human capital investments define a company and its culture!
