<ul><li>Employees over 50 or GenXers feel less stress and can concentrate on work better than those under 40, says a recent study.</li><li>They are also much more likely to stretch themselves, work harder and handle crises better.</li><li>But sadly they face an age-bias when it comes to hiring and promotions, say HR experts. </li></ul>They’re neither millennials nor Boomers. In fact, the generation that’s now over 50 is so ignored that their name is barely heard. They’re called GenXers, born between 1965-1980 right before millennials started populating the earth. The generation that started work right at the start of the millennium did not have the kickstart that millennials did, but also gained extensively from the high-capex environment between 2004-2010. Most of them have seen better salary bumps than GenZers or millennials. Strained but not distressed Unlike their younger peers, GenXers feel less stress and can concentrate on work better than those under 40, as per 2023 Asia Mental Health Index by Aon and TELUS Health. “Employees under 40 years of age are nearly 50% more likely than employees older than 50 to feel mentally and/or physically exhausted at the end of their workday,” the report said indicating that the younger workers are tired as compared to the others. As per the AON report, the mental health of those over 50 can be described as ‘strained’ while that of those under 40 in Asia can be described as ‘distressed’. It also establishes a direct correlation between mental health and productivity. GenZs, on the other hand, feel the most stress. “The study shows that employees under 40 are particularly feeling the strain of poor mental health, whilst those between 20 to 29 years old are significantly worse off, with a Mental Health Index score of 57.8, representing the most strain and the highest mental health risk of any age group by a significant margin,” the AON report. <keyword id="28484" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="genx" source="Orion">GenX</keyword> versus GenZ GenXers also have a work ethic that’s polar opposite to GenZs, and not merely because of the generational-effect. “Those who are now in their 50s started work in the late 1990s, the liberalization period. Their work ethos are different in the sense they can stretch a little bit more, work late hours and have more capacity to do work,” Varda Pendse, strategic HR consultant and coach told Business Insider. Neeraj Balani, MD of International SOS, a risk management company too agrees that there are noticeable differences in work ethic between GenXers, millennials, and GenZs. “A GenX employee may prioritize flexible work hours to spend time with their family and may not feel the need for constant feedback from their superiors whereas a GenZ employee might prefer working remotely and can comfortably use multiple apps and platforms for project management and communication and may prefer concise, direct feedback through text or email,” adds Balani. The crisis managers When technology is critical to a process, GenZ who are digital natives are more comfortable and bring a tad more digital savviness into the team. “Generation X brings adaptability and a focus on work-life balance. Generation Z, as digital natives, excels in leveraging technology for efficiency and is passionate about diversity and inclusivity, shaping a more digitally savvy and equitable workplace,” says Balani. So their preference is higher in tech, services, consulting and hospitality. But when it comes to banking and other financial sectors, those over 50s are given equal weightage when it comes to hiring. GenXers are much calmer during a crisis. Pendse believes that they are much more likely to pursue and persevere more while the younger generation also tends to burnout faster and struggle more. “If you see, GenXers also bring in a certain amount of passive aggressiveness into their working style which younger people do not,” she adds enumerating the differences between the two generations of workers. GenXers are also in a state and stage in life that allows them to have a calmer outlook on everything including work. One of them being better financial stability. “Employees without emergency savings are 60% more likely to have difficulty concentrating at work vs employees with emergency savings,” the AON report says. GenXers and an age-bias Yet, there is a visible age-bias when it comes to those over 50, especially when it comes to fresh hiring by companies. “There is diffidence in hiring an older person. A younger employee is also much more likely to be promoted than an older person,” Pendse says. However, experts believe that might be the wrong approach. “I believe recognizing and valuing older employees is not only a matter of fairness but also a strategic move for organizations. Their experience and institutional knowledge can be instrumental in problem-solving, mentoring younger employees, and contributing to the overall success of the company,” Balani tells Business Insider India. The right mix of an ideal workplace, experts say, is a good measure of each of these opposite generations — weighed in with millennials. Millennials who have seen nondigital and a digital era have been quick adapters, and also have the advantage of mentoring GenZs while receiving mentoring support from GenXers. Work-life balance is the buzzword these days and ample studies have shown how GenZ prefers a job which is flexible in terms of timings. In January this year, a study conducted by Randstad revealed that workers prioritise work-life balance over salary when evaluating potential job opportunities. According to the study, 57 percent of employees would reject a job offer if it negatively impacted their work-life balance. However, even though employees want greater work-life balance, there have been billionaires who disagree with the concept and promote hustle culture instead. Speaking on 3one4 Capital's podcast "The Record," Murthy argued that such an intense work ethic is necessary for India to improve its productivity and compete on the global stage. Hiring in the Indian IT sector was affected this year due to a global economic slowdown. However, hiring activity is expected to pick up pace once again in the first quarter of 2023 even as layoffs continue in the global job market. Better financial benefits, career growth and job satisfaction are the key parameters for Gen Zs to continue working in an organisation. For Millennials, on the other hand, job stability and flexibility are important parameters in choosing to continue working in an organisation. Overall, Gen Zs and millennials made up 52% of India’s total population as of 2021, higher than the global average of 47%. “This trend is expected to maintain momentum till 2030, where the share of India’s Gen Z and millennial population will be 50%, higher than the world average of 46%,” the report said. Even if that means <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/gen-z-happy-job-hopping-quit-without-backup-oliver-wyman-2023-1">job-hopping</a>."Instead of suffering in a job that doesn't align with their values, they'd rather leave than endure it just for a paycheck," O'Brien said. "This attitude is forcing the hand of organizations who want to attract Gen Zs."Growing up with the internet and social media has made this generation acutely aware of injustice, and they're bringing this awareness to the workplace.Groups of young people, such as the youth-led nonprofit Gen-Z for Change, have taken to TikTok to <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-gen-z-is-changing-work-most-pro-labor-generation-2022-11">spread pro-union messages</a> and educate their peers about their worker rights.And that's helped fuel Gen Zers' confidence to put their foot down when they spot workplace injustice.<h2 id="ffab05ce-9b77-4f31-8129-46f77c6956be">But Gen Z isn't a monolith</h2>Every generation that reaches adulthood in society is put under a microscope — we've seen it with millennials and even generations before, O'Brien noted. "But when it comes to Gen Z, a noticeable difference I see is that they choose action, so it almost forces change," she said.That's not to say all Gen Zers are comfortable with confrontation; in fact, many experience more <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/remote-work-fueling-gen-z-job-anxiety-stress-mental-health-2023-12">anxiety in the workplace</a>.Stapleton said some of the Gen Z clients she worked with still struggled with assertiveness and had concerns over how employers would respond to them saying no.But as a generation, she said, they are much more willing to speak up if something feels unfair or unreasonable."Gen Z is showing that there is a different way," Stapleton said, "and that doesn't always go down too well with the previous generation."

They're like, 'Nah, I'm not feeling it today, I'm gonna come in at 10.30am.' Or, like, in emails, I'll tell them this is all grammatically incorrect, did you not check your spelling? But many agreed with Foster's comments about the generation, arguing the Gen Z workers they know lack work ethic and discipline, yet expect a lot. Some even agreed with her perception of their grammatical skills."They use commas instead of periods, and they never use question marks," one X <a target="_blank" href="https://twitter.com/COLINREESE/status/1743838518231847162">user</a> wrote.Gen Z has long been depicted as lazy and ill-equipped to do their jobs. In the comments, viewers expressed solidarity and agreed that work culture needed reforming. But when her video spread to other platforms, she was widely derided for the attitudes expressed, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.rollingstone.com/culture/culture-features/viral-tiktok-working-9-5-missing-point-brielle-asero-1234863398/">Rolling Stone reported</a>.In response to the stereotype that they are lazy and entitled workers, Gen Zers have started to push back, suggesting that they've been misunderstood and saying that their main objective in criticizing traditional work norms is to forge a better culture.In October, 20-year-old musician Zoe Wynns shared in a social media video that she <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/gen-z-musician-calls-out-work-corporate-job-2023-12?r=US&amp;IR=T">didn't want to work a 9-to-5 job</a>. Despite people calling her spoiled, Wynns told BI she thinks <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/gen-zer-9-to-5s-generation-hardworking-2023-12?r=US&amp;IR=T">Gen Z is very hardworking</a> — she's happy to put in the hours to pursue music, she said, but she doesn't want to get trapped in a career that doesn't fulfill her. Another Gen Zer, Andra Berghoff, said in a TikTok that she left her first <a target="_blank" href="https://www.insider.com/gen-z-work-culture-quit-job-2023-10">corporate job</a> after a few months. She told BI that "corporate life is soul-sucking," highlighting long hours and "higher ups who refuse to even listen to their employees" among other things. She added that Gen Z is "pushing back on the unfair standards of work that haven't reflected the change in times for decades." Even within professional circles such as advertising, media, education and healthcare, moonlighting has been quite widely prevalent in <keyword id="3658" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="india" source="Orion">India</keyword>. Today, in the tech industry, moonlighting is the biggest open secret. This is predominantly a result of its work from anywhere (WFA) flexibility and salary structures that have not been revised for decades now, and are out of sync with inflation and the cost of living. Social media has bolstered the impact of moonlighting, making it a conversation across platforms. Leaders engaging in this conversation with a strong tone have been questioned and berated by the new generation of the workforce. The generational shift in mindset has been transforming the future of work. There are enough non-traditional traits of Gen-Z in the realm of work, workplace and evolving trends. Every 6-8 years, a new generation of the workforce enters with a different mindset. This accelerated with the pandemic-induced hybrid workforce evolution and is transforming the way of work. The predictability quotient has considerably reduced except for one thing that is certain - evolution. Moving towards a digital ecosystem has been a blessing. But was it the first flash of red light? Seamless linkages across Aadhaar, <keyword id="61610" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="pan" source="Orion">PAN</keyword> and PF in some cases brought a few such cases into the public domain. Nonetheless, moonlighting became a swift and easy choice for most employees to supplement their incomes with the rising inflation. With the pandemic, hybrid work policies, WFA mannerisms, quiet quitting, quiet firing, and moonlighting picked up momentum. According to HR experts, the incidence of moonlighting has increased in the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic in 2020, with people wanting to earn more money in the face of job losses, inflation or having more time as a result of working from home. However, <keyword id="115437" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="india-inc-" source="Orion">India Inc.</keyword> did not anticipate moonlighting to attain such a gigantic proportion so quickly. Other reasons could be the entrepreneurial bug that has bitten all tech employees alike, the need for higher incomes and lastly the demand for flexibility in workplaces. As per some unofficial estimates, despite a return-to-office mandate, less than 15% of the employees turn up to work, especially at the junior level. This impacts mid-level managers as they have a lesser incentive to return to office. However, there is no clarity on what level the laid-off employees involved in moonlighting fell under - entry, middle or senior. If it were at the entry level, it may just be possible that the salaries were lower compared to the cost of living in major cities. That made staying at home and working for two jobs a better proposition for them. While for mid- and senior-level employees, it could be that they got more exciting projects, helping them enhance their skill sets and of course supplementing their income. From a broader lens, for organisations, it is an ethical and moral issue concerning intellectual property. It might just affect productivity due to increasing fatigue and stress. From a legal standpoint, if the contract forbids moonlighting, it is a strict NO. A person may work more than one job in India without breaking the law unless prohibited by the employment contract. However, section 60 of the Factories Act bars dual employment for an adult worker. All in all, moonlighting is an ethical issue. It becomes a logical thing to do in India, where overtime pay is an alien concept and plentiful employees are underpaid on full-time jobs. The war of talent is real and is deeply impacting employers. Employees who are part of the skilled working population are spoilt for choice with an ‘abundance mindset’. Moonlighting in today’s world is going to stay. What is needed is not confrontation but collaboration between employer and employee. After all, human capital investments define a company and its culture!

There is also a shift towards <keyword id="496079" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="value-buys" source="Orion">value buys</keyword> and bulk purchases. </li><li>The report also says that urban Indian consumers have tasted luxury and are resisting a reduction in their luxury consumption. </li><li>Over 80% are willing to pay higher for a product that is produced/sourced locally, or made from recycled, sustainable, or eco-friendly materials. </li></ul>The Indian consumer sentiment seems to be a long way off from the post-pandemic revenge-spending trend. After suffering through a year of high inflation, a lot of Indians are weighed down by the rising cost of living. Six in ten Indians i.e. 63% said they are cutting down on non-essential spending, in a PricewaterhouseCoopers survey. About seven in ten Indians or 74% of them are concerned about their personal finances, said PwC Global Consumer Insights Pulse Survey, which captured the views of 500 Indians across 12 metros. “In the current economic climate, where the economic growth rate has slowed to 4.4% in the third quarter of 2022 as against 6.3% in the previous quarter, with the consumer price index hovering at around 6–7% for over a year, the impact on consumer confidence is markedly visible,” the survey report said. Shift to bulk and value buys Over the next six months, consumers plan to adopt an array of cost-saving behaviours and one of them is <keyword id="3740499" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="discount-shopping" source="Orion">discount shopping</keyword>. Ravi Kapoor, partner and leader - retail and consumer at PwC India said that the ongoing financial stress in the lives of the consumers will have a potential restraining effect on spends in the highly discretionary categories of electronics and luxury. Nearly 47% of Indian consumers say they will shop with retailers who offer free or discounted product delivery. And, 45% also say they will buy certain products only when they are on promotion or when there is a special offer. Consumers also plan to shop with retailers who offer better value; they are also looking to buy in bulk, sign up for subscription services, switch to cheaper brands and even go without a product they use regularly, the survey said. Even as they are turning tight-fisted, consumers are willing to shell out a few extra bucks for sustainable products. Over 80% are willing to pay higher for a product that is produced/sourced locally, or made from recycled, sustainable, or eco-friendly materials, or produced by a company with a reputation for ethical practices, the survey said. “Consumers will continue to demand world-class buying experiences in both physical and digital channels with work cut out for brands to reduce costs, enhance availability, and for going local,” said Kapoor. Online shopping to go hybrid As more Indians shift to the cost-saving mode, they want to shop online more. Around 61% of respondents indicated that they plan to shop online more often over the next six months. However, the increased cost of delivery has now started to pinch them, and many of them are now keen on going the distance to collect their purchase — moving to hybrid e-commerce. “The use of hybrid e-commerce models such as ‘click and collect’, wherein people purchase or select items online and pick them up in-store or at a centralised collection point, is also gaining popularity. Around 42% of Indian consumers say they will increase the use of click and collect services over the next six months,” the report said. In the lap of luxury In order to help improve their stressed financial conditions, Indians are planning to slash luxury/premium products or designer products the most, as indicated by 38% of Indians. At the same time, the report also says that urban Indian consumers have tasted luxury and are resisting a reduction in their luxury consumption. Half of the survey respondents said that luxury goods make them feel good about themselves, and a similar number also seem to prefer them as the product quality is better than that of a non-luxury good. The need for wanting to keep up with latest trends is also driving people towards luxury — indicating that there is an appetite for future spending. After luxury, most Indians are keen on reducing spending on virtual online activities (32%), consumer electronics (32%) and fashion products like clothing and footwear (31%). Travel (30%) and groceries (21%) had the least-reported planned reduction in spending – indicating that the revenge travel trend is likely to stay on, especially amongst GenZs and millennials. Today, OTT platforms in India are a dime a dozen. And every platform has a host of shows, original movies, docuseries, mockumentaries, and whatnot on offer. Only a handful of these projects, however, leave a mark on the audience. Going by the critics’ reviews and fan comments, the crime thriller Farzi, by director duo Raj Nidimoru and Krishna DK aka Raj &amp; DK, is well on its way to becoming one such show. Farzi marks the OTT debut of actor Shahid Kapoor and the Hindi-language debut of Tamil actor Vijay Sethupathi. It chronicles the journey of a talented sketch artist, Sunny (played by Kapoor) who produces counterfeit money to initially save his grandfather - but later, succumbs to the greed of easy money. Sethupathi, meanwhile, plays a sassy cop with a penchant for personal mess and professional success- similar to Raj and DK’s other talented spy, Srikant Tiwari from their hit series The Family Man. Farzi also stars Kay Kay Menon, Raashii Khanna and Bhuvan Arora in pivotal roles, along with brief but important cameos by Zakir Hussain, Kubbra Sait and Amol Palekar, among others. Though the concept is a tad more common and predictable than their other projects, Farzi still manages to hook your interest - thanks to impeccable performances. The eight-episode-long series released on Amazon Prime Video on February 10 and is <a href="https://twitter.com/rajndk/status/1625478730465570817/photo/3">trending worldwide – it’s </a>in the Top Ten on Prime in Australia, the US, the UK, UAE, Singapore and Canada Littered with references to The Family Man and even a minute callback to their earlier film 99, Farzi makes for a memorable addition to Raj and DK’s filmography, and their spy universe. <cmsannotation type="cmsannotation" annotationid="Delivering eclectic content since 2003" comment="subhead2" text="Delivering eclectic content since 2003">Delivering eclectic content since 2003</cmsannotation> Raj and DK made their debut with the romantic comedy Flavours in 2003. Today, their filmography includes a sci-fi romantic comedy (Glitch), India’s first zombie-comedy (Go Goa Gone), and a nuanced crime-drama (Shor in the City), among others. What’s common across their projects is an acute understanding of the world their protagonists inhabit - be it the working-class professionals who hate Mondays in Go Goa Gone or frustrated fathers caught between demanding children and bosses in The Family Man. In Farzi too, Kapoor’s mini monologue on the tragedy of being a middle-class Indian in the country has started doing the rounds on social media for being “relatable AF” - in the words of millennials and GenZs. Of course, the credit for this partially goes to the show’s co-writers, Suman Kumar and Sita Menon. Kumar also worked with the duo on The Family Man. But it’s also to do with how Raj and DK pursue a story - through detailed research, a healthy dose of sly humor, and in their own words, lots of writing: “Our writing process is extremely clinical – from the plot to the history of the characters, the screenplay – we want everything to be on paper. Also, we write a lot. Like a lot. We always want to have a lot of material to bounce things off. Some stories resurface because they were written for a different time. Sometimes two scripts merge to create something like Stree, which was in a different shape originally. The same goes for Family Man too,” shared DK <a href="https://www.gqindia.com/entertainment/content/the-family-man-raj-and-dk-interview">with GQ India</a>. Raj and DK produced Stree and also wrote the screenplay, with Sumit Arora writing the dialogues and Amar Kaushik directing the film. However, the duo has also pandered to commercialisation at times and indulged in overused tropes and cliches (for example, Happy Ending). Just like the anti-hero of Farzi, few ‘artists’ in Bollywood possess the talent to break stereotypes and surpass tropes to create interesting content in a genre as cluttered as crime and comedy. Despite the setback due to the pandemic, the beauty industry is going back towards normalcy. Attractive social media marketing, beauty influencers and e-commerce platforms have brought brands closer to consumers. While 2 years back, most of us would not be comfortable buying cosmetics online, the pandemic changed that, and it will help the larger market in the long-run. Another change the pandemic brought about in the minds of consumers is a move towards using brands that use more natural ingredients in their products. Consumers are also choosing to opt for brands that have a larger brand purpose. British-born, ethical cosmetics company The Body Shop has been in India for the past 16 years. It was one of the early brands that attracted consumers due to its range of naturally-inspired cosmetics and toiletry products. For years, the brand has been pioneering the philosophy that business can be a force for good, and has been launching new standards of ethics in business. In the past few years, the brand has seen healthy growth in India. While its presence on ecommerce platforms like Nykaa and now on Myntra and Amazon helped it take its products closer to its consumers, it also adopted strategies like 60 minute door-to-door delivery and WhatsApp shopping to cater to mass customers. To understand the brand’s journey in India more closely, we spoke to Vishal Chaturvedi, Vice President, The Body Shop India. He told us how the brand has fared in India in the last 16 years, its strategies that have helped it grow here and its plans for the future. Excepts: Q) Walk us through The Body Shop's journey in India. It's been 16 years since the brand entered the Indian market. How have things been? Over the years, the beauty industry has changed a lot, especially in last two years. Beauty is now breaking standard norms and redefining it as an approach to self-expression. encouraging more about ‘How you feel’ in your skin and hence breaking standard beauty norms. There is a rapid rise of beauty technology, product innovations &amp; modes of selling. It’s also noteworthy that the millennials &amp; Gen-Z are driving the change. Digital transformation and emergence of technology has driven reach and penetration. Physical retail stores continue to be the heart of consumer experience, sensorial experience, education and trust operated by human connection. Our omni-channel strategy has helped address the new emerging scenarios to address customer queries and reach them at their convenient channel. Further, consumers are actively seeking product knowledge, source of ingredients, packaging details and identifying with the brand’s core purpose. Issues related to sustainability, inclusivity, adaptability, empathy and relevance are evaluated while making purchase decisions. At the Body Shop, we have targeted focus with a robust omni-channel strategy including an overall digital and offline presence. Bringing touch-and-feel of products to digital portals and experiential stores with technology will be the beacons for the future. The beauty segment has become very cluttered in the last few years. How has the brand made a place for itself in the clutter? The Body Shop is a disruptive beauty brand with an edge in the Indian market. We have constantly researched &amp; provided for the changing market trends while keeping the customer at the forefront and helping the planet. Community Programs: Our commitment to be a purpose-driven business has kept grounded to our activist roots. There is credible work done around plastics, tackling waste, packaging &amp; sustainability. World’s first community fair trade program is the core of our DNA for over 40 years. Similarly, we have worked on social activism raising the voice of less privileged communities and dealt with environmental impacts of plastic waste effectively. Communication Channels: In current times, the lines are blurring between digital &amp; physical. Beauty shopping is not restricted to one and in fact, the integration of two is a must to cater audience needs. We have focused our energies on servicing our consumers swiftly as well as digitally enabling our site to deliver an experience at par to that of our stores. After the pandemic, to cater to mass customers, we started door-to-door delivery in 60 minutes and launched WhatsApp shopping. All these initiatives are working in our favor to place ourselves in the cluttered market. Q) The pandemic has thrown a lot of challenges to retail brands across the globe. How did you navigate these challenging times? The pandemic has been a period of learning for the brand. It gave us the time and chance to carefully evaluate consumer behaviour and outlook in order to plan strategically for the future. We were able to understand our customer’s needs better. We have learned to be agile and nimble. Despite the economic magnitude of the lockdown, the beauty industry may have proven to be reasonably resilient with the new emerging normal. In the past two years of the new-normal, the consumers adapted to new channels and wellness routines. Personal hygiene and beauty trends had an uptick because people spent more time on themselves. The increased awareness around beauty and self-care presented the brand with a great niche and campaigns like 'Self Care Sunday' or 'Spa at Home' were very well received by the audience. We also revamped our digital presence by building a consumer-friendly digital store that is complete with cutting-edge technology and a user-first interface. In an attempt to reach customers, we expanded our social media presence with tools to assist hands-on product experience. Digital and social channels have been at the forefront of consumer engagement Anytime, Anywhere shopping service for customers, via Social commerce, WhatsApp Shopping, Assisted Sales, Home delivery, going beyond Express Delivery to 2 hours’ delivery, Expert Chats, Live video consultations and so on. Technology played a vital role in navigating through these times by helping our customers make the right decision in absence of product touch &amp; feel experience. As a result, we are now catering an addition of 5000+ pin codes, we’re now serving over 30,000 pin codes across the country. Q) How are you expanding your retail presence? What are your plans for this year? Post pandemic the dynamics have changed. Large parts of our customers have moved towards online shopping but retail stores are the heart and soul of our brand. With things now opening up again, we are geared up to provide an even better shopping experience to our customers. The need for human connection is now stronger than before and the consumers will look for sensorial experience, physical interaction, engagement, touch &amp; feel of the products and seek personalized consultation at the stores. With this vision, we are moving ahead to open 25 new stores in 2022 in various locations. Our future plans include bringing the activism in the very heart of the brand, that is retail stores. We are excited to launch the new Activist Workshop stores where customers c<a name="_GoBack"></a>an explore and discover how they ‘can fight for a fairer and more beautiful world’. On the product front, we aim to turn completely Vegan by 2023. Additionally, we are constantly focused on making our product packaging 100% recyclable thus reducing our environmental impact. Q) How are you going deeper into the country? What kind of sales are you witnessing from smaller cities? Are you also focusing more on increasing your offline presence in Tier II and Tier III cities? Rising awareness amongst consumers, increased incomes coupled with explosion in the presence of digital platforms the demand from Tier II &amp; III cities has increased manifolds. Customers believe in buying less but buying quality. The appetite to spend in these smaller cities is increasing and customers are becoming more conscious about what to use for their skin and body. Additionally, post pandemic, a great chunk of people have shifted back to their hometowns from metro areas. However, they are still looking for their favourites for personal use. Keeping up with the need of our customers we have a robust plan of opening 25 new stores in FY 2022. 70% of these stores will be opened in other Tier II cities like Indore, Bhopal, Patna and Shimla. Q)Over the past few years, there has been a movement towards cruelty-free products. How has this helped you build your brand narrative? Since its inception in 1976, The Body Shop is a cruelty free brand. We believe and fought the cause that animals should not be used for cosmetic testing. Therefore, all the ingredients are ethically sourced and have never been tested on any animal. The Body Shop passionately believes that no animal should be harmed in the name of cosmetics and that animal testing on products and ingredients is outdated, cruel and unnecessary. This is why The Body Shop and Cruelty Free International partnered to deliver the largest and most ambitious campaign ever to seek a global ban on the use of animals to test cosmetic products and ingredients. In June 2017, The Body shop India launched itsForever Against Animal Testingcampaign with Cruelty Free International and became the first international beauty brand to campaign against animal testing in cosmetics globally. Additionally, all our products are 100% Vegetarian and over 60% of our products are 100% Vegan. This includes best-selling ranges such as the Tea Tree skincare range, Himalayan Charcoal Purifying Glow Mask, Body Yogurts and now the iconic Body Butters launched in November 2021. All our new launches are 100% Vegan. Our new haircare range is certified by The VEGAN society and packaged with fully recycled plastics The Vegan Society takes an extremely thorough approach to certification and contact is made with every supplier and manufacturer of raw materials within the product catalogue. For The Body Shop, that’s over 3,700 raw materials. Once each raw material has been meticulously investigated, each product is reviewed in totality to make sure it is fully compliant. Only then does a product receive Vegan Trademark certification. We are working toward 100% of all Products becoming Vegan by 2023 keeping in line with our commitment to reduce impact on planet. The Body Shop is one the first cosmetics brands to prohibit testing on animals, and also the first company to introduce Fair Trade to the beauty industry. They are also well aware about the ingredients, heavily relying on digital and social media platforms and growing consumption of do-it-yourself (DIY) content. Affordability is key for the customers while demanding high levels of product innovations. As a result, we are investing in video content and reinforce it with a good-quality website. Also, we plan to leverage technology to mimic offline experiences. We use more plant-based and recycled plastic which encourages people to reuse, recycle and repurpose. Our long-term goal is to create a circular packaging strategy, which involves recycling or repurposing all of our product packaging. The customers are being transparently educated about ingredients, packaging and sustainability efforts via Omni channel strategy. "I didn't grow up rich, so I was always looking for ways to make money."In middle school, Shakes started his first business — selling bags of gummy worms to his classmates. He got caught frequently but managed to keep the operation going for several years, and he estimates that he generated around $500 by the end of eighth grade. "There's much more integration, in the work that they do, between the personal and the professional. And we realised that usually whenever we've taken people behind the scene and shown them the whole truth of anything, they resonate with what we are saying. So, we thought that hey, maybe the way to do influencer marketing for us is first bring out what's going on which it seems like a lot of people resonate with and then mount our own attempt at doing this in an honest, truthful manner on top of this video,” shared Mehta. So, the video is a clarion call to all Honest Influencers who only endorse what they actually use and love. And whose opinions can’t be bought with money or as Mehta calls them, ‘TWT’s Truthsayers.’ With this, The Whole Truth aims to not only highlight the problem, but it is giving out a solution. Mehta said that it was a conscious decision to make a long ad. Sharing the reason why, Mehta said, “When we wrote the script, we didn't write it as an ad. That's why you will see that there is very little of the brand. But yeah, it's a it's a long video, given attention spans nowadays. We took that conscious call because we didn't want to make a superficial half-hearted point. We wanted to be do justice to both the problem and at the end, our take on the solution and why we believe things are not the way they should be, etc. And again, the hope is that, when a AIB or TVF come out with a 10-20 minute videos, because the content is so good people do watch through it. So let's see, whether we are thinking too much of our content and people will drop off or will it be engaging and relevant enough for them to watch through -- that's the punt we've taken, but we were very clear that we don't want to do a half-hearted superficial ad-ey job of it was for us, it's not an ad, we're not like promoting a product in this.” Considering that The Whole Truth is calling out an industry for its divergence from an ethical path, there’s a good chance that this campaign will cause a controversy. In today’s time, it doesn’t take much to boycott a brand. Influencers also have a cult following now and there are always some fans who wouldn't watch 'The Whole Truth' and just jump to conclusions by reading a video’s caption or watching an ad for a few seconds with context. Mehta candidly told us that he is worried about this. He said, “It's something that worries us, but we don't know what to do about it. So, in The Whole Truth’s maiden campaign, it started by dropping a giant truth bomb about the FMCG industry and its marketing techniques. So, we asked Mehta, if he were to give a TedTalk on what helped the start-up gain media attention and become a popular consumer brand in a short time, he said, “TedTalk, I’m not sure of, but the one big learning is do something which is purpose driven. I think it speaks to people, when you're doing something for a fundamental reason, which is beyond just money, profit and fame. Like for us, the mission is to bring honesty back to foods. And that mission comes from a very personal plce because I've suffered at the hands of incorrect and dishonest food marketing, I had to go through multiple weight gain and loss cycles when I used to think that switch from that unhealthy cola to this healthy juice or switch from that unhealthy paratha or that my mom makes in the morning to breakfast cereals. And then I realized that actually, the breakfast cereal is much worse than my mom's parathas and, and the juice has the same amount of sugar as that coke does. So, that's betrayal, that feeling of being lied to, no one likes. Hence, the mission comes from deeply personal space. And I think consumers resonate with that -- they can see that these guys are out not to make a quick buck that they're out to change the world in small but meaningful ways. So that would be my big learning. When you do that, consumer love, fame and revenues -- all of that starts falling in place.” Going forward, The Whole Truth will be on the lookout for expansion opportunities. It started as a protein bar and aims to expand into different food and health sub-categories. Mehta has an interesting approach to decide company’s next foray. “Our focus areas are very clear. We intend to go on getting into different food categories where we see that consumers today are being lied to and create a product that lives up to the whole truth philosophy, so for example, till eight, nine months ago, we were only making protein bars, then we launched a range of muesli, peanut butters in another two, three months. We're gonna launch another food category in five months from then we launch another food category. So our mission is simple. We just take different food categories, we check whether currently, most of the brands there are offering 100% clean label food, or are they lying to consumers? And unfortunately, the answer in most turns out to be the latter. And then we start trying to formulate a product that lives up to The Whole Truth philosophy because we don't have any option, we have to declare each and every ingredient on the front of it, so that takes a little while. So that remains the focus not just the next half, but the foreseeable future, too,” told he. Mehta told us that the brand will keep on unearthing the 100% honest truth of anything that touches food or food marketing in the future as well.
