I drove the $70,000 Genesis GV60: See inside the futuristic Tesla rival that has facial recognition and a crystal ball

<ul class="summary-list"><li>The GV70 is a new compact SUV from Hyundai's luxury brand, <keyword id="12265705" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="genesis" source="Orion">Genesis</keyword>. It starts at $41,000.</li><li>With options, our tester reached $65,045. We drove it on-road and off. </li></ul><p>There's a good reason why the 2022 <keyword id="12643489" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="genesis-gv70" source="Orion">Genesis GV70</keyword> has won so many awards, and this September, the title of Northwest Outdoor Activity Vehicle of the Year was added to its accolades. The 2022 GV70 also won best activity vehicle among compact and midsize luxury entrants at the same event — pretty impressive for an all-new SUV in the class.</p><p>The award comes from a group of automotive journalists who test drove 19 vehicles on a mini go-kart track and on an off-road course at Mudfest, an event thrown by the Northwest Automotive Press Association at the Ridge Motorsports Park in Shelton, Washington. Members have been testing SUVs and crossovers since the mid-1990s, and this year, I was one of them.</p><p>Genesis is Hyundai's relatively new luxury brand, and it does a good job of standing out. The 2022 GV70 sparks joy upon first sight, featuring Genesis' signature crest grille and a slick LED quad-headlight look. It's a new entry in the luxury compact-SUV class, and sits alongside the midsized GV80 in Genesis' SUV lineup.</p><p>(With automakers like Genesis, higher numbers often mean bigger cars — thus, the GV70 is smaller than the GV80.)</p><div type="image" title="The 2022 Genesis GV70 at Mudfest." height="2333" width="3500" msid="88016383" hostid="261"></div><p>Drivers of the GV70 have two trims to choose from:</p><ul><li><strong>Genesis GV70 2.5T ($41,000, 22/28 mpg city/highway):</strong> The standard GV70 comes with all-wheel drive and a standard turbocharged 2.5-liter, four-cylinder engine paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission. Although a long list of tech features come standard, drivers can still upgrade certain features by adding features packages.</li><li><strong>Genesis GV70 3.5T ($52,600, 21 mpg combined):</strong> The GV70 3.5T has a 375-horsepower twin-turbo V6 engine. Drivers can still add the Sport Advanced package ($5,000) or the Sport Prestige package ($9,900) to access more options, which include Nappa leather as well as more tech and safety features.</li></ul><p>At Mudfest, I drove a $65,045 GV70 3.5T Sport Prestige model (with a burgundy matte paint job for an extra $1,500), which runs on the 375-horsepower V6. With this engine, the GV70 can earn about 19 mpg in the city and 25 mpg on the highway, or 21 mpg combined, according to the EPA.</p><div type="image" title="The 2022 Genesis GV70 at Mudfest." height="3500" width="2800" msid="88016384" hostid="261"></div><p>The 3.5T Sport Prestige model features Nappa leather upholstery, a heated steering wheel, Lexicon speakers, extra safety features, and an electronic limited-slip differential, as well as a 14.5-inch HD screen with navigation, surround-view and blind spot monitoring — and my personal favorite, a convenient head-up display that shows your mpg focused at infinity in the driver's view through the windshield.</p><p>On the first day of the on-pavement go-kart test drive, the Genesis GV70 was my top pick among the compact and midsize luxury utility vehicles.</p><div type="image" title="The 2022 Genesis GV70 at Mudfest." height="2333" width="3500" msid="88016386" hostid="261"></div><p>Driving the GV70 on the pavement mini go-kart track, I had an extraordinary experience — especially with the convenient paddle shifters. The ride and handling was pleasant and the brakes were decent, helping me navigate around the tight pavement track with ease. The GV70 treated me with a courteous responsiveness in its agile steering around tight corners, careful but not harsh braking, and peppy acceleration. </p><p>The GV70 sits low compared to others in the class, not needing a stair-step to reach the driver's seat. The hood also offers reasonable visibility from the driver's seat, unlike other SUVs and trucks. In the back, the roof dips stylishly into a hatchback-style trunk, almost like a coupe. A panoramic roof and 21-inch sport alloy wheels — which have crest features matching the grille — add to the appeal.</p><div type="image" title="The 2022 Genesis GV70 at Mudfest." height="2333" width="3500" msid="88016387" hostid="261"></div><p>In a mock-autocross event, the GV70 navigated around all cones with dexterity. The GV70's suspension is controlled electronically, and the Genesis has the ability to direct as much or as little power needed to each individual wheel. However, the drive-mode select feature offers custom mode settings, allowing motorists to customize — and save — preferential settings for the engine, transmission, steering, suspension, and all-wheel-drive system settings.</p><p>On the second day, this Genesis really shone on the off-roading course.</p><div type="image" title="The 2022 Genesis GV70 at Mudfest." height="2333" width="3500" msid="88016389" hostid="261"></div><p>Off-pavement, the GV70 handles with grace, and the capability is very reasonable. I was comfortable, safe, grounded, and in control over a dirt hill, around a steep corner, and over an obstacle of logs in the sturdy GV70.</p><p>Drivers of the GV70 are going to find the cabin pleasant and enjoyable, as well as the driving experience — the driver's seat has a 16-way power adjustment and a four-way power lumbar adjustment with an ergonomic motion seat, and an integrated memory seat with smart posture care so you can position yourself perfectly over the pedals. The front seats are both heated and ventilated, and a wireless device charge and fingerprint recognition, as well as Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, make the cabin experience luxuriously enjoyable.</p><div type="image" title="The 2022 Genesis GV70 at Mudfest." height="2800" width="3500" msid="88016390" hostid="261"></div><p>The commodious, tech-packed cabin successfully hushes road sounds, and the well-made materials are impressively high-quality, ultimately giving a roomy, opulent, and modern interior vibe.</p><p>Overall while driving the 2022 Genesis GV70, I had a comfortable driving experience in one of the nicest interiors in the class. The 2022 GV70 impressed on the pavement go-kart track, handling with a pleasant ease, and even provided a grounded, safe, insulated feel while navigating the off-roading course.</p>

Review: I drove the $65,000 Genesis GV70 SUV on pavement and off-road — and it was incredible all around

<ul class="summary-list"><li><keyword id="9952" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Genesis">Genesis</keyword> is still a relatively new luxury brand and suffers from a lack of brand recognition, despite producing cars of stellar quality.</li><li>After reviewing the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/2021-genesis-gv80-review-price-specs-horsepower-interior-hyundai-suv-2020-10">GV80 luxury SUV</a>, Business Insider sat down with Genesis CEO of North America, Mark Del Rosso to learn more about the brand's progress.</li><li>The GV80 might be Genesis' first SUV, but Del Rosso said that the company is "filling out the lineup."</li></ul><p>Genesis has an unusual problem. </p><p>In the various times I've gotten behind the wheel of one of its cars, I've always been blown away by the quality. G70, G80, G90, GV80 — it didn't matter. Each boasted a serene interior, good power, a comfortable ride, and responsive light-footedness. Most offered more car per dollar than what you'd get from a European competitor. </p><p>So, Genesis has the product side of the business on lock.</p><h2><strong>Playing catch-up</strong></h2><p>The problem is that Genesis is still quite new. Most people don't know about it. <a href="https://news.hyundaimotorgroup.com/MediaCenter/News/Press-Releases/hmg-hyundai-group-global-brand-genesis-launches-151104">Five years ago</a>, South Korean automaker Hyundai created the new luxury arm by spinning off its Genesis nameplate. It wasn't an all-new name because before that, the name applied to <a href="https://www.carmagazine.co.uk/car-reviews/hyundai/hyundai-genesis-coupe-2008-car-review-and-video/">a Hyundai sports coupe</a> and also <a href="https://cars.usnews.com/cars-trucks/hyundai/genesis/2016">an executive sedan</a>. So the branding was, understandably, a little bit confusing. </p><p><a href="http://www.koreaherald.com/view.php?ud=20201005000258"><div type="image" title="Genesis G80" height="1667" width="2500" msid="78920878" hostid="261"></div></a></p><p>But there's plenty of room for growth. <a href="http://www.koreaherald.com/view.php?ud=20201005000258">The Korea Herald</a> reported earlier this month that South Korean automakers Kia and Hyundai accounted for 8.9% of the US passenger car market from this past March to August. That's a sliver of the market compared to, say, Toyota, <a href="https://carsalesbase.com/us-car-sales-analysis-2019-brands/#:~:text=2019%20Manufacturers,share%20of%20the%20US%20market">which by itself took home 14% of the US market in 2019</a>.</p><p>Last year, Genesis sold 21,233 cars, according to <a href="https://carsalesbase.com/us-genesis/">CarSalesBase</a>. That accounted for a mere 0.12% of the US car market share. Acura, a competitor, <a href="https://acuranews.com/en-US/releases/release-807c080220275f828905387c4f002e91-record-light-truck-sales-lift-ahm-and-honda-brand-to-sales-increases-in-2019">sold 157,385 cars</a>. Needless to say, there's some catching up to do.</p><h2><strong>Investing in quality products</strong></h2><p>The first step toward that was offering well-made sedans. With this, Genesis didn't go the shouty route by <a href="https://jalopnik.com/cadillac-proved-that-brand-means-nothing-if-you-can-t-b-1825388345#:~:text=VideoThe%20Inventory-,Cadillac%20Proved%20That%20Brand%20Means%20Nothing,Can't%20Back%20It%20Up&amp;text=Flashy%20commercials%2C%20trendy%20hashtags%20and,de%20Nysschen%20ran%20the%20shop.hop.">buying up expensive ads and splashy hashtags</a>. It focused on authentic credibility, rolling out products that stood on their own without the smoke and mirrors of an advertising campaign.</p><p>When I <a href="https://jalopnik.com/what-hyundai-plans-to-do-to-make-genesis-the-next-lexus-1795666983">sat down with Manfred Fitzgerald in 2017</a>, the then-head of the Genesis brand, he said that brand recognition was "still a work in progress."</p><div type="image" title="Genesis G80_1" height="1048" width="2500" msid="78920888" hostid="261"></div>"There's no shortcut to that," Fitzgerald told me. "There's nothing that I would try to rush by any means, but what I will say that with today's technology, I think if you can get it right and if you are authentic and credible and not trying to play somebody, I think you can accelerate the whole process of creating brand awareness.<p>"For us, it is so important to be credible and credibility delivers the core message to the customer," he said. </p><p>Three years on, I circled back for a temperature check with Mark Del Rosso, who was <a href="https://www.prnewswire.com/news-releases/mark-del-rosso-named-ceo-of-genesis-motors-north-america-300937037.html">named CEO of Genesis North America last October</a>. What's changed between 2017 and now? And what new lessons has Genesis learned in the interim?</p><p>The quiet devotion to quality has certainly paid off. Del Rosso extensively touted the awards Genesis has since won with <a href="https://www.motorauthority.com/news/1127099_genesis-tops-2020-j-d-power-vehicle-dependability-study#:~:text=Genesis%20was%20rated%20the%20most,Vehicle%20Dependability%20Study%20for%202020.&amp;text=When%20it%20comes%20to%20individual,with%20a%20PP100%20of%20100.100.">J.D. Power</a> and <a href="https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2018-02-22/korean-cars-pull-ahead-of-german-brands-consumer-reports-says?sref=P6Q0mxvj">Consumer Reports</a>. And he doubled down on the company's stance on producing three sedans ahead of the GV80, Genesis' first SUV — <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2020/05/21/business/suv-sales-best-sellers.html#:~:text=%E2%80%9CS.U.V.s%20made%20up%2047.4%20percent,compared%20to%2072%20percent%20now.%E2%80%9D">despite the bigger rides selling in greater numbers in the US market</a>. </p><p>Sedan sales, Del Rosso said, were strong enough that the company was able to justify production of the G80, G90, and G70 before the GV80. </p><div type="image" title="Genesis G70" height="1868" width="2500" msid="78920896" hostid="261"></div>"Building a strong foundation was absolutely the right step with sedans," he said. "Now, with the launch of our flagship SUV, the GV80,  it opens up a market opportunity to connect with a whole new audience." <p>He went on, "We're filling out the lineup and we're not done yet. We are a benchmark when it comes down to dependability, quality, and safety."</p><p>Ostensibly, there are more SUVs coming, though nothing's been confirmed yet beyond the GV70. By the end of 2021, however, Del Rosso said to expect the first battery-electric car from the brand.</p><h2><strong>Products that make a statement</strong></h2><p>Del Rosso was understandably coy when asked about Genesis' position among competitors. He used terms such as being a "customer-focused company," "cache over cash," and "building advocacy" — but I couldn't really fault him for it. And he's likely right to think that building up a new brand takes time.</p><p>Genesis builds extremely solid cars, there's no question about that. Driving one — or even seeing one — gives you a sense of being "in the know." A sense that you're aware that something better exists outside the realm of mindlessly buying a Mercedes or BMW just like everyone else  and calling it a day.  But it's not like you can bottle that feeling and sell it. </p><div type="image" title="2021 Genesis GV80_OEM_9" height="1667" width="2500" msid="78920917" hostid="261"></div>Brand recognition still seems like a "work in progress," as Fitzgerald said in 2017. The best Genesis can do right now is keep doing what it's doing and hope that the buyers will come. Already, Del Rosso said there are 21,000 customer reservations on the GV80. Reservations don't always translate to sales, but it's a good first effort.<p>Hopefully, if we check back with Genesis in another three years, it will have moved the needle a bit more, and earned more of a market share from established luxury titans from Europe and Japan. </p><p>The Genesis trajectory is one that's defined by putting out an excellent product that can speak for itself. And when the product already speaks for itself, there's really not much else to say about it. Now, it's down to seeing if the buyers will go for it. </p>

Genesis already makes terrific cars — now it just has to win US buyers away from Mercedes and BMW

<ul class="summary-list"><li>The <keyword id="10163651" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="2021-genesis-gv80">2021 Genesis GV80</keyword> is a brand-new, midsize luxury crossover from <keyword id="9952" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Genesis">Genesis</keyword>, <keyword id="596" type="CITY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Hyundai">Hyundai</keyword>'s luxury brand.</li><li>The GV80 competes with the likes of the BMW X5, Mercedes-Benz GLE, and Acura MDX.</li><li>The <keyword id="60427" type="ENTERTAINMENT" weightage="60" keywordseo="SUVs">SUVs</keyword> come with either a four-cylinder engine or a V6 and either rear-wheel drive or all-wheel drive.</li><li>Starting MSRP is $48,900. The two versions I tried out cost $58,475 and $64,825, respectively.</li></ul><p>If you don't recognize the front grille on the 2021 <keyword id="4418862" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Genesis-GV80">Genesis GV80</keyword> — or, indeed, the name Genesis at all — you're not alone. All you need to know is that there's a new, midsize luxury crossover entering the fray. And it's quite a nice one, too.</p><p>The GV80 is brand new for 2021. It comes with two engine choices, either rear-wheel drive or all-wheel drive, and an optional third row of seating. By now, this is a pretty standard formula for the overly saturated luxury midsize crossover segment. </p><div type="image" title="2021 Genesis GV80_KL_10" height="1667" width="2500" msid="78845623" hostid="261"></div><p>The trick is seeing what the GV80 does differently.</p><h2><strong>The genesis of a Genesis SUV</strong></h2><p><a href="https://news.hyundaimotorgroup.com/MediaCenter/News/Press-Releases/hmg-hyundai-group-global-brand-genesis-launches-151104">In 2015</a>, Hyundai spun off its Genesis nameplate — which had previously been worn by <a href="https://www.carmagazine.co.uk/car-reviews/hyundai/hyundai-genesis-coupe-2008-car-review-and-video/">a sporty coupe</a> and then, later, <a href="https://cars.usnews.com/cars-trucks/hyundai/genesis/2016">an executive sedan</a> — into a separate, global luxury brand. Five years and three Genesis-branded sedans later, Genesis launched the GV80 as the fourth Genesis model worldwide and the first SUV the brand's ever offered. </p><div type="image" title="2021 Genesis GV80_KL_15" height="1667" width="2500" msid="78845630" hostid="261"></div><p>After this, we can expect the more compact and upcoming <a href="https://www.caranddriver.com/news/a34205139/2022-genesis-gv70-suv-first-look/">GV70 SUV</a> to further balance out Genesis' sedan-heavy lineup. The brand may be new, but it follows in the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/kia-hyundai-genesis-hottest-automakers-to-watch-telluride-veloster-k5-2020-9">current South Korean automaker philosophy</a>, which is to make quality cars that people actually want to buy. </p><p>The quality aspect of the plan, at least, is taking off nicely. Genesis was among the <a href="https://jalopnik.com/genesis-hyundai-and-kia-topped-even-porsche-in-the-201-1827016493">top-ranked brands on J.D. Power's Initial Quality Study in 2018</a>. It was also crowned Consumer Reports' <a href="https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2018-02-22/korean-cars-pull-ahead-of-german-brands-consumer-reports-says?sref=P6Q0mxvj">top brand in the US that same year</a>. This past February, Genesis <a href="https://www.motorauthority.com/news/1127099_genesis-tops-2020-j-d-power-vehicle-dependability-study">took the top spot in J.D. Power's Vehicle Dependability Study</a>.</p><p>With high accolades come high expectations, and Genesis' newest offering certainly commanded the latter.</p><div type="image" title="2021 Genesis GV80_KL_13" height="3750" width="2500" msid="78845638" hostid="261"></div><h2><strong>Details and safety ratings: Two engine options</strong></h2><p>Underpinning the GV80 is the rear-wheel-drive platform that's shared with the G80 sedan. Unlike the Hyundai Palisade, <a href="https://www.motortrend.com/cars/kia/telluride/2020/2020-hyundai-palisade-vs-2020-kia-telluride-comparison-review/">which shares its platform with the Kia Telluride</a>, a Genesis spokesperson said the GV80 and G80 platform will only be found in Genesis products.</p><p>Two engine options are available, both with eight-speed automatic transmissions. The first is a 2.5-liter, turbocharged inline-four that's good for a claimed 300 horsepower and 311 pound-feet of torque. In rear-wheel drive guise, it gets an estimated 21 mpg in the city, 25 mpg on the highway, and 23 mpg combined. In all-wheel drive setup, those figures drop slightly to an estimated 21 mpg in the city, 25 mpg on the highway, and 22 mpg combined.</p><div type="image" title="2021 Genesis GV80_OEM_24" height="1283" width="2500" msid="78845645" hostid="261"></div>The second engine is a 3.5-liter, twin-turbo V6 with a claimed 375 horsepower and 391 pound-feet of torque. The V6 only comes with all-wheel drive and gets an estimated 18 mpg in the city, 23 mpg on the highway, and 20 mpg combined.<p>The GV80's all-wheel drive system has a rear-wheel bias, meaning most of the power gets sent to the rear wheels. But depending on the condition, it can achieve a 50:50 torque split, perfectly dividing the power sent to the front and rear wheels. </p><p>The GV80 can be optioned with a third row of seats, but the option is only available on certain V6 models.</p><div type="image" title="2021 Genesis GV80_OEM_17" height="1667" width="2500" msid="78845649" hostid="261"></div><p>As of the time of this writing, the 2021 GV80 has not yet been rated for crashworthiness by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration or the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety.</p><h2><strong>What stands out: Go sit in one right now</strong></h2><p>By now, I've made it pretty clear on this website that I don't care for touchscreen-heavy car interiors. I find them unnecessarily distracting. True, the GV80 has a long, 14.5-inch LCD display, but you don't have to touch it to use it.</p><p>Instead, the primary controls are handled via a click wheel-type interface down on the center console. With this, you can scroll through the menus and click on items. The dial turns in a satisfying sort of way in its cradle and gives a substantive feeling of scrolling, so I didn't mind using it.</p><p>Just don't get it mixed up with the car's gear selector, which is another dial right below it.</p><div type="image" title="2021 Genesis GV80_OEM_7" height="1666" width="2500" msid="78845651" hostid="261"></div><p>I only got seat time in the four-cylinder GV80 (first in the RWD Prestige trim, totalling $58,475, and then in the AWD Prestige trim, totalling $64,825), but I didn't think it was lacking in power at all. It did all the accelerating things (merging, passing) well. The rest of the time, it hummed along quietly, a cloistering cocoon of a chariot leaving me with my own thoughts.</p><p>That's the thing with cars like the GV80. They are so easy to drive that they only ask that you put about three brain cells' worth of thought into the actual act of driving. The rest of the car's onboard sensors — lane-following assist, blind-spot collision-avoidance assist, high-beam assist, rear cross-traffic collision-avoidance assist, and highway-driving assist — act like a second (or third, or fourth) set of eyes to help you spot the worst of what's around you largely before you do.</p><div type="image" title="2021 Genesis GV80_KL_23" height="1667" width="2500" msid="78845655" hostid="261"></div><p>Inside the GV80, plush leathers with diamond-quilted stitching cover the seats, brushed metal switches and toggles gleam in a muted sort of way, and the wood trim gives everything a very upscale feel. In a Genesis lineup full of great interiors, the GV80 fits right in.</p><p>The biggest thing you'll notice from behind the wheel of the GV80 is how quiet it is. Except for bursts of acceleration, you'll hardly ever hear the engine. Tire and wind noise are nearly nonexistent. This is likely due in part to the GV80's Road Active Noise Cancellation feature, wherein the speakers emit a frequency that cancels out the sound of whatever's coming in. Think of it as a <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-luxury-car-brands-use-automotive-sound-design-stay-competitive-2020-9">noise-cancelling car</a>. </p><div type="image" title="2021 Genesis GV80_OEM_10" height="1667" width="2500" msid="78845660" hostid="261"></div><p>I, however, am always skeptical of technology like this, so I'm more willing to chalk the GV80's whispery ride up to its superior noise insulation hardware.</p><p>As a final aural feature, there's also a "Sounds of Nature" menu item you can select, which plays a variety of ambient noises — like birds chirping in the woods, a bustling cafe, and a crackling fire — through the car's speakers. </p><p>The GV80 offers a spacious interior. It's airy for both front-and rear-passengers and also provides a decent-sized trunk.</p><div type="image" title="2021 Genesis GV80_OEM_16" height="3750" width="2500" msid="78845665" hostid="261"></div><h2><strong>What falls short: Light and numb steering</strong></h2><p>Low-speed steering in the GV80 is numb and on the lighter side — meaning that steering the car requires deceptively little effort. It feels overly sensitive without giving the needed feedback. Perhaps this is a plus to some, but for me, I felt quite disconnected from the road. </p><p>I like cars to have some weight in their steering; anything with too little resistance doesn't fill me with as much confidence as I'd like. Especially when I'm navigating something like a large SUV around a parking lot, I want as much feedback as possible.</p><div type="image" title="2021 Genesis GV80_OEM_4" height="1667" width="2500" msid="78845669" hostid="261"></div><p>Happily, the steering feedback gets heavier when you're traveling at highway speeds. But if you want a fix for the slower stuff, simply putting the car in Sport mode will help add a little weight to the steering.</p><p>Why something as cushy as the GV80 has a Sport mode at all is beyond me, but I suppose it must live up to the "sport" aspect of its "sport utility vehicle" name. </p><h2><strong>How the GV80 compares to its competitors: Deluxe interior</strong></h2><div type="image" title="2021 Genesis GV80_OEM_13" height="1667" width="2500" msid="78845673" hostid="261"></div><p>Since the GV80 is a luxury crossover, its competitors include the BMW X5, Acura MDX, and Mercedes-Benz GLE. </p><p>In base form, the GV80 has the 2.5-liter engine and is equipped with rear-wheel drive as standard. That will set you back $48,900. At the upper end of the spectrum, a 3.5-liter V6, all-wheel drive GV80 with a third row of seats will cost $65,050. The most expensive GV80 — also with all-wheel drive, the V6 engine, and 22-inch alloy wheels — will cost $70,950.</p><p>But in terms of base price, the GV80 slots right in between the Germans and the Japanese. You get a lot of plush interior for the price and the car just feels more deluxe and upscale, like a more serene place to sit. Plus, it's brand new for the 2021 model year and its unique new looks will turn heads for at least a little while.</p><p>All MDX models, however, do come with a third row of seats. So if having three rows for under $60,000 is a must for you, the GV80 might lose out on that regard.</p><h2><strong>Our impressions: Quiet luxury</strong></h2><div type="image" title="2021 Genesis GV80_OEM_20" height="1667" width="2500" msid="78845764" hostid="261"></div><p>Perceived faults in everyday driving — road bumpiness, a loud cabin, sitting in an uncomfortable chair for many hours at a time — are wiped cleanly away when you get into the GV80. The suspension soaks up the worst of the road's imperfections. I want one of those seats as my office chair. </p><p>The car itself does all the basic car stuff — drive, brake, turn — and its driver-assistance features help whoever is behind the wheel know what's coming before they'd detect it themselves. With all that taken care of, what else is there left to think about other than simply pointing the car straight and getting to where you need to be?</p><div type="image" title="2021 Genesis GV80_OEM_2" height="1667" width="2500" msid="78845766" hostid="261"></div><p>This isn't a criticism, by the way, but an observation. As time goes on, luxury SUVs in particular isolate you further and further from the road because that, apparently, is what defines luxury. And if that's the standard, then GV80 absolutely nails it. It's a living room on wheels where hardly any road noise or bumps get through to upset its passengers. </p><p>Cars from Hyundai and Kia <a href="https://www.koreatimes.co.kr/www/tech/2020/02/129_270276.html">only account for 8.1% of the US market share</a>. As a brand, Genesis is still very much in its infancy. But Genesis' approach to attracting buyers is by offering quality products for less money than the luxury German competitors. </p><div type="image" title="2021 Genesis GV80_OEM_22" height="1667" width="2500" msid="78845767" hostid="261"></div><p>An equivalent from Mercedes' AMG or BMW's M would be uncharacteristic. That's not what the GV80 is about. More so, its products speak to a sense of quiet luxury that more than hold their own against well-established competitors. </p><p>If the G80, G90, G70, and now GV80 are anything to go by, the automaker is well on its way to building out a solid lineup. Genesis is a luxury brand sold by Korean automaker <keyword id="596" type="CITY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Hyundai">Hyundai</keyword>. </p><p><a href="https://www.insider.com/tiger-woods-crash-fox-news-greg-gutfeld-slams-media-coverage-2021-2">During Tuesday's crash</a>, the vehicle's front end and and bumpers were destroyed, Los Angeles County Sheriff Alex Villanueva said <a href="https://www.facebook.com/watch/?v=445064156614574">during a press conference</a>. But the interior of the car was not severely damaged, helping Woods survive, Villanueva said. </p><p>"The interior of the vehicle was more or less intact which kind of gave him the cushion to survive what otherwise would've been a fatal crash," Villanueva said.</p><p>Genesis is the sponsor of the Genesis Invitational, a PGA Tour tournament that Woods was hosting at the Riviera Country Club in Los Angeles.</p><p>The company didn't respond to Insider's request for comment. But, Genesis Motor North America CEO Mark Del Rosso said in a statement Tuesday he was "heartbroken to hear that Tiger was in an accident this morning. Our thoughts and prayers are with him and his family."</p><p>Some of the GV80's <keyword id="46574" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="safety">safety</keyword> features include an omnidirectional anti-collision technology that analyzes driving conditions as they occur, according to <a href="https://www.genesis.com/au/en/luxury-suv-genesis-gv80-safety.html">the Genesis GV80 website.</a></p><p>Additionally, a 10-<keyword id="109631" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="airbag">Airbag</keyword> System is installed that includes "a center airbag between the two front seats, to help prevent collisions between passengers and subsequent impact injuries," it said.</p><p>The GV80 is also equipped with a blind-spot collision avoidance technology that evasively steers the car to safety to avoid a collision in case the drive is changing lanes or when another vehicle is changing lanes and is approaching towards the car's rear, the company said on its website. </p><p>The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration <a href="https://www.nhtsa.gov/vehicle/2021/GENESIS/GV80/SUV/RWD">hasn't released</a> crash-test results or overall safety ratings for the GV80. While the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety said on Wednesday on Twitter that the GV80 is currently being tested and results should be announced next month.</p><p>The vehicle has a starting price of $48,500 for entry level models. The premier 3.5T Prestige model is priced at over $70,000. </p><p>The 2021 GV80 <a href="https://www.caranddriver.com/genesis/gv80">received strong reviews from Car and Driver</a>, with a 10/10 rating. "With a sumptuously appointed and whisper-quiet cabin, the 2021 GV80 is exactly the flagship SUV the Genesis brand needs to be taken seriously by American consumers," the magazine wrote. </p><p><a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/2021-genesis-gv80-review-price-specs-horsepower-interior-hyundai-suv-2020-10">The GV80 is the fourth Genesis model</a> after Hyundai decided to separate the luxury Genesis models from its high-end car models.</p>

But you know what feels decidedly <em>not </em>ordinary? Sit down, place your index finger in just the right spot, and the SUV wakes up, ready to drive. The glove box is actually a drawer and, just like its exterior, the GV60's interior rejects hard edges in favor of blobby, rounded features. When you turn it on, a <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/hyundai-ev-genesis-gv60-suv-crystal-sphere-tesla-rival-2023-8">mesmerizing glass orb</a> between the front seats rotates 180 degrees to reveal a gear selector. Neat.</p><div type="image" title="The Genesis GV60." height="1333" width="2000" msid="102800504" hostid="261"></div><p>The upscale interior keeps you feeling comfy and fancy with appointments like cushy leather seats that automatically massage the driver on long highway stints. That's another advantage over Teslas, which lean more minimalist than <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/luxury-electric-car-suv-rolls-royce-bmw-mercedes-lucid-interior-2023-8">luxurious</a>.</p><div type="image" title="The Genesis GV60." height="1333" width="2000" msid="102800511" hostid="261"></div><p>A smattering of crisp, easy-to-use screens — plus a heads-up display projected onto the windshield — lend the GV60 a high-tech vibe. But Genesis didn't overdo it. There are still old-fashioned buttons for some shortcuts, climate controls, and the like.</p><h2><strong>Driving the GV60</strong></h2><p>One notable button is affixed to the steering wheel and reads "BOOST." Pressing it briefly unlocks a bunch of extra power from the GV60's dual-motor, all-wheel-drive system. Not that it needs the additional oomph: The souped-up GV60 Performance that Genesis lent me already puts out a generous 429 horsepower and 516 pound-feet of torque. In layman's terms, that means you'll be gleefully rocketing into the distance with every stomp of the right pedal.</p><div type="image" title="The Genesis GV60." height="1333" width="2000" msid="102800513" hostid="261"></div><p>Ride quality is pleasant thanks in part to a feature that scans the road and adjusts the suspension firmness in real-time. Active noise canceling and a well-insulated cabin make highway driving library-quiet.</p><p>And handy gizmos aid us feeble human drivers: blind-spot cameras, a 360-degree birds-eye view, and a fabulous advanced cruise-control suite come as standard equipment. In traffic and on the open road, the Genesis was able to confidently and automatically stick to its lane and keep up with the flow of traffic, leaving me feeling less beaten down than usual after a five-hour drive.</p><div type="image" title="The Genesis GV60." height="1333" width="2000" msid="102800515" hostid="261"></div><h2><strong>What falls short: Not much</strong></h2><p>Range, estimated by the EPA at 235 miles in the GV60 Performance, is a slight sore spot. Opt for the standard model and you're supposed to get a healthier 248. The Model Y, for instance, is rated for up to 330 miles.</p><p>But limited range becomes less of an issue when you consider the <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/electric-car-ev-road-trip-toyota-bz4x-genesis-gv60-charging-2023-8">GV60's outrageously quick charging speeds</a>. Hook it up to one of the more-powerful charging stations out there and you can recharge from 10% to 80% in just 18 minutes, the brand says. On a road trip, I topped up from 15% to 94% in a breezy (for EVs) 34 minutes.</p><div type="image" title="The Genesis GV60." height="3024" width="4032" msid="102800517" hostid="261"></div><p>Another knock against the GV60 is how exceptional Hyundai's other offerings are. The <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/hyundai-ioniq-5-n-electric-car-fake-engine-noise-2023-7">Hyundai Ioniq 5</a> and <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/coolest-electric-cars-ev-tesla-cybertruck-chevy-bmw-kia-ev9-2023-8">Kia</a> EV6 (which both share their underlying platform with the GV60) deliver bold styling, the same super-fast charging tech, similarly snazzy screens, and more — all for less money.</p><h2><strong>Our impressions</strong></h2><div type="image" title="The Genesis GV60." height="1333" width="2000" msid="102800521" hostid="261"></div><p>The media is quick to compare every new EV to Tesla because it's the Goliath of the EV world. I drove Hyundai's luxurious new $70,000 electric SUV and saw why it's one of the best Tesla rivals yet 

<ul class="summary-list"><li>In 2015, <keyword id="596" type="CITY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Hyundai">Hyundai</keyword> launched <keyword id="9952" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Genesis">Genesis</keyword>, a spinoff luxury brand based loosely on the <keyword id="1552876" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="Hyundai-Genesis">Hyundai Genesis</keyword> sedan.</li><li>That sedan became the <keyword id="11151519" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="Genesis-G80">Genesis G80</keyword>, which has since undergone a full overhaul.</li><li>Our $69,075 G80 loaner wasn't just a standout car - it was a reminder of how far Hyundai has come.</li></ul><p>Much like every other vehicle from Hyundai's new luxury brand, Genesis, the 2021 G80 sedan almost intimidates me. It shouldn't, given that it's a car and I'm a human. Yet its soft but striking lines, headlights and taillights with snake-eye slits down the middle, and massive front grille weaved with delicate chrome accents - all communicate to me, the onlooker, that this car is superior to whatever I can bring to the table. It has me beat. </p><p>It has <em>us</em> beat. </p><p>I guess that's the mark of any good luxury car: looking like that person you hoped wouldn't show up to your high-school reunion because you know you'd spend the rest of your night analyzing what went wrong in your life.</p><div type="image" title="The Genesis G80 sedan." height="2357" width="4024" msid="82498742" hostid="261"></div><p>For Americans, Hyundai as a whole is like that. You might have underestimated it 20 years ago - mocked it, even. But now it's here, perfectly manicured and sleek as hell, looking you right in the eyes and making you regret every negative thought you ever directed its way. </p><p>Maybe, the G80 makes you think, you should just skip the next reunion.</p><div type="image" title="The Genesis G80 sedan." height="2557" width="3992" msid="82498744" hostid="261"></div><p>"The name is Hyundai and it rhymes with 'Sunday' and it comes from South Korea," <a href="https://www.caranddriver.com/reviews/a15140735/hyundai-excel-gl-archived-road-test/">Car and Driver</a> wrote in 1986, the year Hyundai officially entered the American market with the $5,000 Excel subcompact. But this unfamiliar brand wasn't "some kind of thatch-roofed blacksmith shop on the backside of the world," the magazine added - it was a company whose sales accounted for about 10 percent of South Korea's gross national product in 1984. </p><p>"Nobody is pretending [the Excel] represents the leading edge of automotive art," the story continued. "But if you're talking automotive business, this may well be the biggest story of 1986."</p><div type="image" title="The Genesis G80 sedan." height="2486" width="4635" msid="82498746" hostid="261"></div><p>Still, these little Hyundais were unknown. They were from another country. For armchair comedians whose only punchline was "not American," they were an easy laugh. </p><p>But Car and Driver was right. Hyundai would become a poster child for automotive business in the US, and more than 30 years later, its new Genesis brand isn't just laughing back at those armchair comedians - it's laughing at the whole auto industry.</p><div type="image" title="The Genesis G80 when it first debuted, with a rounder face, versus the Genesis G80 now, with sharp angles and a massive grille.." height="1421" width="4035" msid="82498748" hostid="261"></div><p>Genesis <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/hyundai-is-going-after-lexus-and-mercedes-with-a-luxury-brand-of-its-own-2015-11">launched in 2015</a> as its own luxury brand. It spun out of the Hyundai Genesis, a high-end sedan that <a href="https://www.caranddriver.com/news/a15364552/2015-hyundai-genesis-pricing-let-there-be-luxury-starting-at-38950/#:~:text=With%20sales%20of%20the%202015,an%20eight%2Dspeed%20automatic%20transmission.">started at about $40,000 at the time</a>. The Hyundai Genesis as we knew it <a href="https://www.caranddriver.com/news/a15351313/genesis-2-0-hyundais-genesis-to-become-separate-luxury-brand/">became the Genesis G80</a>, and Genesis then launched two sedans on either side of it: a smaller <a href="https://www.cnet.com/roadshow/news/2022-genesis-g70-prices-new-features/">G70</a> and a larger <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/2020-genesis-g90-review-sedan-hyundai-interior-price-technology-features-2021-1">G90</a>. SUVs like the <a href="https://www.cnet.com/roadshow/news/2022-genesis-gv70-suv-us-official-debut/">GV70</a> and <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/2021-genesis-gv80-review-price-specs-horsepower-interior-hyundai-suv-2020-10">GV80</a> came later, as did a <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/2021-genesis-g80-has-stunning-looks-and-375-horsepower-v6-2020-3">2021 styling overhaul</a> to create the G80 you see here. </p><div type="image" title="A Genesis G80 price chart." height="566" width="1622" msid="82498749" hostid="261"></div><p>All trims of the 2021 G80 come with an eight-speed automatic transmission and starting prices are as follows:</p><ul><li><strong>2.5T RWD: $47,700.</strong> The 2.5T RWD trim features a turbocharged 2.5-liter, four-cylinder engine with rear-wheel drive, featuring 300 horsepower and 311 pound-feet of torque. </li><li><strong>2.5T AWD: $50,850.</strong> The 2.5T AWD trim has the same 300-horsepower engine but comes with all-wheel drive, meaning the power is sent to all four wheels instead of just the two in the rear. </li><li><strong>3.5T RWD: $59,100.</strong> The 3.5T RWD trim reverts to rear-wheel drive but upgrades the engine to a twin-turbocharged 3.5-liter V6, boosting horsepower to 375 and torque to 391 pound-feet. </li><li><strong>3.5T AWD: $62,250.</strong> The 3.5T AWD trim is the top of the line, pairing the 375-horsepower V6 with all-wheel-drive capabilities. </li></ul><div type="image" title="The Genesis G80 sedan." height="3992" width="2661" msid="82498754" hostid="261"></div><p>But the G80's real opportunity for customization comes in its looks. Not only does the car come in various shades of blue, green, and gold, but each exterior shade has multiple interior color options centered around its wooden accents. You can do black. You can do brown. You can do beige. You can even do blue.</p><p>A blue interior with a blue exterior! The G80 makes that possible. What a treat. </p><div type="image" title="The Genesis G80 sedan." height="2077" width="3990" msid="82498756" hostid="261"></div><p>This particular G80 climbed all the way up to $69,075 with AWD, the V6, and two add-ons: a $400 coat of Adriatic Blue paint and the $5,400 Prestige Package.</p><p>That package upgrades the car from 19-inch wheels to 20-inch ones, regular leather to <a href="https://www.cars.com/articles/what-is-nappa-leather-432078/">Nappa leather</a>, and adds a classy microfiber suede headliner, a 12.3-inch 3D instrument cluster, a heads-up display, and other tech.</p><div type="image" title="The Genesis G80 sedan." height="3987" width="2608" msid="82498759" hostid="261"></div><p>Much like a Rolls-Royce in a sea of Camrys and Accords, the G80 stands out. It doesn't look like anything else on the road - a sign of both affluence and taste. Its winged logo might remind you of an Aston Martin, while its smooth and basic lines evoke Bentley vibes.</p><p>The G80 just has an aura around it. For a base MSRP not too far above the <a href="https://www.prnewswire.com/news-releases/average-new-vehicle-prices-continue-to-surpass-40-000--up-more-than-5-in-january-2021--according-to-kelley-blue-book-301227930.html">average new-car price of $41,000</a>, that's kind of incredible. </p><p>Even among its competitors - chiefly the $54,250 Mercedes-Benz E-Class and $54,200 BMW 5 Series - the G80 stands apart. You can attribute some of that to newness, but not acknowledging that Hyundai's dominating the design game would be disingenuous. </p><div type="image" title="The Genesis G80 sedan." height="3979" width="2396" msid="82498761" hostid="261"></div><p>Inside, the G80 is perfectly cohesive. The patterns on the infotainment controls match those on the gear selector. The selector matches the start button. The button matches the turn stalks. Even if you can't touch them, similar patterns appear around the bulbs in the overhead lighting. Not a single thing feels out of place, and every click satisfies. </p><p>The G80 does make you learn new controls for the touchscreen: Two patterned scroll knobs in the center-console area adjust volume and tune, while a beautiful clear dial navigates between screens. </p><div type="image" title="The Genesis G80 sedan." height="2238" width="4016" msid="82498763" hostid="261"></div><p>The controls look alien at first, but as you gently rest your hand over the open-pore wood encasing them, clicking through the channels with a dainty middle finger and turning off the car to a fancy exit chime and a Genesis logo projected on the ground under you, you start to get it. Sure, this is different, but this is good different. This is fancy different. <em>You're</em> fancy different, all for an entry price equal to a loaded Honda Pilot. </p><p>You're not the only person who notices, either.</p><p>"Where do you go to buy one of those?" one person asked upon seeing this review loaner. Its acceleration won't wow you, and compared to the old 2015 Hyundai Genesis with its optional 420-horsepower V8, the G80 is slow to get up to speed.</p><p>Performance is a big gripe among reviewers of the G80. <a href="https://www.motortrend.com/cars/genesis/g80/2021/2021-genesis-g80-pros-and-cons-review/">Motor Trend</a> wanted "better ride quality and body control" and said the G80's powertrains "lacked the smoothness and refinement of others in the class." <a href="https://www.caranddriver.com/genesis/g80">Car and Driver</a> said it "doesn't feel as athletic as some rivals" while <a href="https://www.motorauthority.com/news/1131005_review-update-2021-genesis-g80-pushing-german-rivals">Motor Authority</a> docked it for body control, saying the G80 "never feels as buttoned down as the German competition."</p><div type="image" title="The Genesis G80 sedan." height="2661" width="3978" msid="82498768" hostid="261"></div><p>All of this is true. It left me looking back at it when I parked it and taking constant photos of its intricate design. It left me glad that, in a time when car design <a href="https://jalopnik.com/this-is-what-the-average-car-looks-like-in-2017-1791184500">all blends together</a>, Hyundai's fancy new luxury brand went for something different. Even if it doesn't age well, it's an attention-grabber now.</p><p>From <a href="https://www.latimes.com/archives/la-xpm-2000-jul-10-fi-50418-story.html">initial buyer distrust and quality concerns</a> in the late 1980s to <a href="https://www.motortrend.com/cars/hyundai/sonata/2011/">bold styling and value updates</a> that began around 2010 and just kept coming, it's been a long road for Hyundai in the US market. But along the way, Hyundai hasn't just found its place on American roads. <keyword id="70910" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Hyundai-Motor" source="Orion">Hyundai Motor</keyword> said on Monday that its <keyword id="2198852" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="first-quarter-net-profit" source="Orion">first-quarter net profit</keyword> rose 17 per cent from a year earlier as an improved product mix and a weak won helped offset the impact of chip shortages.<br /><br />Net profit for the three months ended in March rose to 1.78 trillion won ($1.42 billion) from 1.52 trillion won a year earlier, the company said in a statement.<br /><br />"A combination of increased sales of high-end Genesis and SUV models, friendly exchange rates and low inventory levels helped offset the impact of global <keyword id="10389950" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="chip-shortage" source="Orion">chip shortage</keyword> and higher raw materials prices," the statement said.<br /><br /><keyword id="596" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="hyundai" source="Orion">Hyundai</keyword> expects parts supply shortages fueled by the lockdown in Shanghai and high raw materials costs driven by the Russia-Ukraine war will remain major woes for carmakers in the second quarter, reports Yonhap news agency.<br /><br />"The company will make efforts to achieve this year's business guidance by taking a variety of measures, despite those global market uncertainties," Seo Gang-hyun, executive vice president in charge of Hyundai's finance and accounting division, said in the company's earnings conference call.<br /><br />In 2022, Hyundai aims to sell 4.32 million vehicles, 10 per cent higher than its sales of 3.89 million units a year ago.<br /><br />The maker of the Sonata sedan and the Palisade SUV plans to focus on expanding sales of Hyundai's independent Genesis brand and Hyundai SUV models in the US and environment-friendly cars in Europe.<br /><br />In the US, the world's most important automobile market, Hyundai plans to gradually launch three fully electric Genesis models -- the GV60 SUV, the G80 sedan and the GV70 SUV -- this year.
