In 2022, women have demonstrated twice as much interest in coding as they did in the previous year, and they have consumed 1.6x more coding-related information and content per user than in 2021. The data highlights the persistent gender pay gap in India's technology industry, despite progress in bridging the gap at the average total compensation level. The average compensation has remained flat from 2021 to 2022, primarily due to the volatile market conditions.

Women techies earn 7% more than men on average, but male execs top salary charts: Coding Ninjas

Even as Indian women face low representation in leadership roles in the workforce (18 per cent), they are now seeking more entrepreneurship opportunities as compared to men, according to new <keyword id="28120" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="linkedin" source="Orion">LinkedIn</keyword> data released on Wednesday. The data, published in the <keyword id="69007" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="world-economic-forum" source="Orion">World Economic Forum</keyword>'s 2022 <keyword id="2573327" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="global-gender-gap-report" source="Orion">Global Gender Gap Report</keyword>, showed that the share of female founders grew by 2.68 times compared to 1.79 times among men between 2016 to 2021. The growth rate of female entrepreneurship showed to be the highest during the pandemic -- in 2020 and 2021. Besides being underrepresented in leadership roles, the data also revealed that women are also not being promoted internally to leadership in companies at the same rate as men. Men are 42 per cent more likely to be promoted into leadership positions than women. This could explain why women in leadership roles also increasingly lag behind their male counterparts in the senior stages of their careers, with the proportion of women in the workforce decreasing along the corporate ladder. In <keyword id="3658" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="india" source="Orion">India</keyword>, the representation of female leaders has dropped from 29 per cent at the senior level to a staggering 18 per cent at the managerial level. "Our new data is indicative of one thing: working women in India are being held back by more barriers in the workplace when compared to men. LinkedIn data reveals that Indian women are now seeking more entrepreneurship opportunities than men

As per the report, women freelancers too increased in number by at least 5% in 2021 as compared to 2019. This is largely due to the fact that women lost more jobs during the pandemic than men. The earnings of Indian women freelance too grew by 42% since 2020. However, the <keyword id="2191211" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="gender-pay-gap" source="Orion">gender pay gap</keyword> still persists as women make $19/hour on average as compared to men who make $23/hour, in Asia. The gap is wider globally as a woman gets $23 per hour whereas men makes $28 per hour. On an average, women are earning only 82% of what men are earning in the freelance market. The World Economic Forum also highlighted that the global gender gap has widened slightly since 2020 globally. “Overall, they note that the wage gap between female and male workers is 37%, significantly higher than the disparity in freelancing. This suggests that, while women have yet to gain equal access to economic opportunity, the playing field is more level in the freelancing market than in traditional employment markets,” the report says. Freelancing has gender pay gap too but it’s much less than what it’s in the traditional market

<ul class="summary-list"><li>A Polish gaming company recently granted its employees time off during their periods. </li><li>It's a rare <keyword id="11896048" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="policy" source="Orion">policy</keyword> that's becoming more common as the potential toll of <keyword id="11898456" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="period" source="Orion">period</keyword> symptoms gains attention. </li></ul>A company is offering a rare type of leave for its employees that's been debated all over the world.GOG, a gaming company based in Poland, <a href="https://www.linkedin.com/posts/gogcom_gogteam-gog-menstrualhealth-activity-6915278133415829504-DRBN/?utm_source=linkedin_share&amp;utm_medium=member_desktop_web">announced</a> this month that it will be granting employees time off during their periods. While some say this type of policy is a welcome relief, others are worried about how they'll be viewed by their employers and peers if they take it.Gabriela Siemienkowicz, GOG's culture and communication manager, <a href="https://www.axios.com/menstrual-leave-gog-06902bc2-c1b8-4dbf-98e7-34f60708d66a.html">told</a> Axios that the policy is "experimental in a sense that we plan to evaluate in what way those additional days off impact the well-being of our menstruating employees at the end of 2022, and consider expanding the policy in the upcoming year."For now, GOG employees can take off time as needed "whenever period pains occur," according to Siemienkowicz. The company estimates that will amount to a day off per quarter. Menstrual leave isn't novel, but it has been scarce in recent history. Researcher Melanie Ilic in a 1994 article in the journal Europe-Asia Studies <a href="https://www.jstor.org/stable/152770">credits</a> the idea of menstrual leave to Soviet Russia in the 1920s and 30s, when menstruating women were <a href="https://www.jstor.org/stable/152770">released</a> from work to ensure their reproductive health and boost employment. The policy was also popular with Japanese labor unions during the same period, and became <a href="https://www.theguardian.com/lifeandstyle/2016/mar/04/period-policy-asia-menstrual-leave-japan-women-work">national law</a> in 1947. But people who menstruate in Japan <a href="https://www.cnn.com/2020/11/20/business/period-leave-asia-intl-hnk-dst/index.html#:~:text=Widely%20available%2C%20but%20rarely%20used,while%20struggling%20with%20menstrual%20pain.">rarely use</a> such policies, even with seven decades of access. That sentiment might occur in other countries as companies begin to adopt the policies. After all, many American workers are already <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2019/01/15/reader-center/sick-day-employment-policy-united-states-em.html">unwilling</a> to take sick leave, even when they do have it. And despite sick and menstrual leave policies, countries like the United States and Japan have some of the <a href="https://data.oecd.org/earnwage/gender-wage-gap.htm">widest gender pay gaps</a> in the world, according to the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development. Globally, women who would benefit from additional leave policies might not want to take them, already at a disadvantage when it comes to workplace equity."Women were fearful… They had fought to be equal to men, not be seen as weak, and didn't want this drawing attention to a weakness within them and creating a stigma so that they couldn't get promotions," Bex Baxter, former director of UK social enterprise Coexist, <a href="https://time.com/6105254/menstrual-leave-policies/?utm_source=newsletter&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;utm_campaign=newsletter_axiosgaming&amp;stream=top#_ga=2.233775322.512825264.1650898607-amp-D9LGyYyLJSlzujKSnBUe5g">told</a> Time last year. <h2>A tug of war between sick leave and gendered workplace expectations </h2>The Italian parliament struck down a <a href="https://time.com/4714991/italy-lawmakers-paid-menstrual-leave/">proposal</a> in 2016 to offer up to three days of paid menstrual leave per month to employees, a relief to some who were concerned it would make Italian companies more <a href="https://ec.europa.eu/info/sites/default/files/european-semester_thematic-factsheet_labour-force-participation-women_en_0.pdf">reluctant</a> to employ women.But some companies like GOG are trying to eliminate the stigma that accompanies taking menstrual leave. Siemienkowicz told Axios that by implementing such a policy at GOG, the company was acknowledging that employees had been suffering through something privately. For many, period pains are <a href="https://www.insider.com/are-period-cramps-more-painful-than-heart-attack-2018-3">as painful</a> as heart attacks. "It fosters inclusiveness by accepting that there are biological differences in the workplace," she said, saying that it helps to break down taboos around periods. "By giving such additional days off, we acknowledge these symptoms are real."One 2017 <a href="https://bmjopen.bmj.com/content/bmjopen/9/6/e026186.full.pdf">survey</a> of 32,748 women in the Netherlands found that 14% of respondents had taken time off work or school during their periods. Others said that they had shown up to work but had difficulty working while experiencing symptoms. The researchers estimated that each woman lost nearly nine days of productivity per year. Although menstrual leave policies have been met with backlash and derision in countries such as the <a href="https://time.com/4245067/period-leave/">United Kingdom</a> and <a href="https://www.theatlantic.com/health/archive/2014/05/should-women-get-paid-menstrual-leave-days/370789/">Indonesia</a>, companies like GOG and the food delivery company Zomato in India hope that their ones will change how people think about periods. "There shouldn't be any shame or stigma attached to applying for a period leave," Zomato CEO Deepinder Goyal <a href="https://edition.cnn.com/2020/08/10/business-india/zomato-india-period-intl-hnk-scli/index.html">told</a> his staff in a 2020 email. "You should feel free to tell people on internal groups, or emails that you are on your period leave for the day."

In a landmark decision, the <keyword id="6354756" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="bcci" source="Orion">BCCI</keyword> on Thursday announced equal match fees for its centrally-contracted female and male players in a bid to promote gender equality in the country's most popular sport. As per the newly introduced system, the Indian women's cricketers will now receive Rs 15 lakh per Test, Rs 6 lakh per ODI, and Rs 3 lakh per T20I, the same as their male counterparts. Earlier, the women players received Rs one lakh each for ODIs and T20Is while the match fee for a Test match was Rs four lakh. The decision was taken at the BCCI Apex Council emergent meeting. BCCI President Roger Binny said, "This decision sets the platform to grow and develop <keyword id="1521" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="cricket" source="Orion">cricket</keyword>. I believe this is a significant step forward for women's cricket and the game overall." BCCI secretary <keyword id="210899" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="jay-shah" source="Orion">Jay Shah</keyword> said pay equity is an important step towards tackling discrimination. "This is a landmark decision as we enter a new era in India Cricket. I would like to thank my colleagues in the BCCI Apex Council," he said. India thus became only the second country in international cricket to implement equal pay. The announcement comes days after IPL chairman Arun Dhumal, who served as the board's treasurer in the last dispensation, said the BCCI treasury has increased by nearly Rs 6000 crore in the last three years. In his note to the members at the last Annual General Meeting (AGM), Dhumal mentioned that when the last team took charge of the Board from the CoA in 2019, the BCCI's coffers had funds of Rs 3648 crores. "We are handing over an organisation that sits over a treasury of Rs 9629 crores of funds, which is roughly thrice of what we got at the time of our taking over from CoA," Dhumal wrote in his note as the outgoing treasurer. "This is remarkable in the light of the fact that the disbursement to the state associations has seen a jump of nearly 5 times; from Rs 680 crores during the CoA tenure to Rs 3295 crores now to the state associations," Dhumal added. On expected lines, the decision was welcomed by the cricket fraternity." It's a historic move. It's a new dawn for women's cricket. Things were already moving ahead. WIPL together with pay equity policy are steps to get women's cricket to where men's cricket is today," the legendary Mithali Raj told PTI when called for her reaction." BCCI bridges the gender pay gap, announces equal match fees to male and female players

<keyword id="3658" type="COUNTRY" weightage="20" keywordseo="India">India</keyword> has slipped 28 places to rank 140th among 156 <keyword id="6407494" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="countries">countries</keyword> in the <keyword id="69007" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="World-Economic-Forum">World Economic Forum</keyword>'s <keyword id="2573327" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Global-Gender-Gap-Report">Global Gender Gap Report</keyword> 2021, becoming the third-worst performer in South Asia. According to the report, India has closed 62.5 per cent of its gender gap till date. The country had ranked 112th among 153 countries in the Global Gender Gap Index 2020. Noting that the <keyword id="6354942" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="decline">decline</keyword> also took place on the economic participation and opportunity subindex, albeit to a lesser extent, the report said India's gender gap on this dimension widened by 3 per cent this year, leading to a 32.6 per cent gap closed till date. Most of the decline occurred on the political empowerment subindex, where India regressed 13.5 percentage points, with a significant decline in the number of <keyword id="2760168" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="women-ministers">women ministers</keyword> (from 23.1 per cent in 2019 to 9.1 per cent in 2021). "Among the drivers of this decline is a decrease in women's labour force participation rate, which fell from 24.8 per cent to 22.3 per cent. In addition, the share of women in professional and technical roles declined further to 29.2 per cent. The share of women in senior and managerial positions also remains low: only 14.6 per cent of these positions are held by women and there are only 8.9 per cent firms with female top managers," the report said. Further, the estimated earned income of women in India is only one-fifth of men's, which puts the country among the bottom 10 globally on this indicator, it said. Discrimination against women is also reflected in the health and survival subindex statistics. With 93.7 per cent of this gap closed to date, India ranks among the bottom five countries in this subindex. Wide gaps in sex ratio at birth are due to the high incidence of gender-based sex-selective practices. In addition, more than one in four women has faced intimate violence in her lifetime, the report said. "Conversely, 96.2 per cent of the educational attainment subindex gender gap has been closed, with parity achieved in primary, secondary and tertiary education. Yet, gender gaps persist in terms of literacy: one third of women are illiterate (34.2 per cent) compared to 17.6 per cent of men," it added. Among India's neighbours, Bangladesh ranked 65, Nepal 106, <keyword id="3001" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Pakistan">Pakistan</keyword> 153, Afghanistan 156, Bhutan 130 and Sri Lanka 116. Among regions, South Asia is the second-lowest performer on the index, with 62.3 per cent of its overall gender gap closed. "Within the region, a wide gulf separates the best-performing country, Bangladesh, which has closed 71.9 per cent of its gender gap so far, from Afghanistan, which has only closed 44.4 per cent of its gap. "India is the third-worst performer in the region, having closed 62.5 per cent of its gap. Because of its large population, India's performance has a substantial impact on the region's overall performance," the report said. In South Asia, only Pakistan and Afghanistan ranked below India. The report stated that India, home to 0.65 billion women, has widened its gender gap from almost 66.8 per cent one year ago to 62.5 per cent this year. In Pakistan and Afghanistan, the income of an average woman is below 16 per cent of that of an average man, while in India it is 20.7 per cent, it said. As the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic continues to be felt, the global gender gap has increased by a generation from 99.5 years to 135.6 years, the report noted. Now in its 15th year, the report benchmarks the evolution of gender-based gaps in four areas: economic participation and opportunity, educational attainment, health and survival, and political empowerment. It also examines the drivers of gender gaps and outlines the policies and practices needed for a gender-inclusive recovery. For the 12th time, Iceland is the most gender-equal country in the world. Gender Diversity in India In India, gender diversity bias is even more predominant. This is corroborated by the ‘India Skills Report 2018’ that puts the economic participation of women in the workforce at 23% in 2018, a disconcerting fall from 32% in 2016. It is universally acknowledged that bridging the gender gap in India is not just a dire need, but a herculean task loaded with multiples challenges like work-family balance, choice of job profiles, work-place conditions and most importantly a mindset and attitudinal change. With India ranked 142 out of 149 countries in the economic opportunity and participation of women index [as per The <keyword id="2573327" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Global-Gender-Gap-Report">Global Gender Gap Report</keyword> 2018 of WEF], there needs to be concerted effort to increase India’s female labour force participation closer to the global average of 49%. Benefits of a Gender-balanced Workforce The nascent gender diversity across most companies in India has seen many roles such as oil and gas, manufacturing, construction and engineering with a male skew. On the flip side, there are also traditionally female-dominated jobs, such as elementary education and nursing. This is a glaring gap as global research, surveys and data-points clearly exhibit that companies which practice greater gender diversity have reported inherent benefits as they fully leverage and utilize the talent available: <ul><li>Improved financials and profitability: women in leadership positions, mixed-gender boards and pervasive presence across the rank and file have yielded better financial performance.</li><li>A better ‘employer brand’ perception: a progressive and positive reputation will attract the best talent.</li><li>Employee retention: inclusive culture is a booster for motivation and morale.</li><li>A loyal and broadened customer base: a diverse talent pool makes it easier to attract an increasingly diverse customer base. </li><li>A quality-focused shift: since diverse teams are more creative and better at problem-solving, a better gender-mix signifies the shift from quantity to quality.</li></ul>Creating Greater Gender Diversity There has to be a clear distinction between gender diversity and gender equality. Gender diversity doesn’t mean a 50:50 mix of males and females across the organization but a fair representation of both sexes and the critical fact that the hiring team should have an open mind for any openings without assumptions or prejudices. A shift towards a more gender-balanced organization requires structural and systemic changes: 1. A shift in the ‘human capital’ strategy: the diversity strategy to be strongly intertwined with the recruiting strategy e.g. removal of gender-coded words from job descriptions and postings. 2. Internal Communications thrust: an internal mindset build-up is essential to begin on the right footing and to shake-up any pre-conceived notions. 3. Leaders to be champions of diversity: creating an open, inclusive culture. 4. Women Leadership Programs: developing an internal pipeline as a ‘walk the talk’ showcase both internally and externally. 5. A balanced pay and benefits structure: robust, family-oriented perks that account for any ‘unintentional’ bias. Small steps at organizational and employer levels can prove to be a great national asset. As per a McKinsey Global Institute (MGI) report titled, “The Power of Parity: Advancing Women’s Equality in Asia Pacific”, addressing the gender parity issues could lead to 18% higher GDP for India, i.e. $770 billion by 2025.
