A survey by <keyword id="20120149" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="naukri-com" source="keywords">Naukri.com</keyword> has revealed that work-life balance poses a significant concern, as 39 % of the women respondents cited it as a key reason for leaving their jobs. "These issues pose substantial challenges for women trying to re-enter the workforce, with 41 % identifying a lack of flexible work options and 35 % highlighting family responsibilities as significant barriers to continuing with their jobs," the report said. The report is based on a survey conducted by online recruitment company Naukri.com among job seekers registered on its platform. The report found that 73% of women interviewed said <keyword id="20028277" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="equal-opportunities" source="keywords">equal opportunities</keyword> exist for both men and women in employment and leadership positions, and 79% of men agreed that both genders get equal chances at workplaces. Despite a majority of respondents viewing that workplaces offer equal opportunities to both genders, the report revealed that 24 % of women felt men have better growth prospects compared to only 8 % of men holding the same view. On the other hand, 13% of men interviewed said women have better opportunities at the workplace, however, only 3% of women shared this opinion. "Our report highlights an encouraging trend towards <keyword id="20250318" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="gender-equality" source="keywords">gender equality</keyword> in the workplace, with 73 % of women recognising that equal opportunities do exist today. "It also reveals lingering challenges in areas of work-life balance and career advancement, underscoring the need for strategic interventions by industry to ensure continued progress," Naukri.com Chief Business Officer Pawan Goyal told PTI. Even the <keyword id="19898698" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="gender-pay-gap" source="keywords">gender pay gap</keyword> remains an area of concern, with 31 % of women perceiving unequal compensation relative to 16 % of men. "It is submitted that Parliament in its wisdom has enacted the impugned Act to protect the rights of married <keyword id="19943278" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Muslim-women" source="keywords">Muslim women</keyword> who are being divorced by triple talaq. NCW chief Rekha Sharma said, "It was a very derogatory comment that we saw on social media, and we immediately took suo motu cognizance of it. The police have filed an FIR against this person. However, the individual is most likely from Pakistan." "Many such comments are being made, and we are taking those comments very seriously and urging the police to file FIRs in those cases as well," she added. Delhi Police acknowledged the National Commission for Women's (NCW) letter to the Delhi Commissioner of Police, demanding the arrest of the man and submission of a detailed report to the panel within three days. The police said a complaint was received from the National Commission for Women, alleging that a social media user had made an extremely lewd and derogatory comment on a picture of the widow of a late soldier. Taking cognizance of the complaint and after a preliminary examination of its contents, a case FIR under Sections 79, BNS-2023, and Section 67 of the IT Act 2000 has been registered at the Police Station Special Cell, and an investigation is underway. Captain Anshuman Singh, a doctor, was posted with the 26 Punjab as a medical officer in the Siachen Glacier area. On the night of July 19, 2023, there was a fire incident at an Indian Army ammunition dump at the camp where he was posted. Captain Singh saw a fibreglass hut engulfed in fire and immediately acted to rescue four to five individuals trapped inside. He went inside the medical investigation room, which was also on fire, to retrieve the critical medical aid box but could not make it out due to heavy fire amid strong winds. He was awarded the Kirti Chakra posthumously. Captain Singh's wife, Smriti, and his mother received the award from President Droupadi Murmu.

Since being drafted into the <keyword id="20896960" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="WNBA" source="keywords">WNBA</keyword> in April as the No. 1 overall pick, Clark is having an impressive, albeit inconsistent, rookie campaign. These days, watching Caitlin Clark play basketball has become a <keyword id="8151448" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Rorschach-test" source="Orion">Rorschach test</keyword> for a deeply divided country. <h2>How Caitlin Clark become the center of a <keyword id="22159409" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="culture-war" source="keywords">culture war</keyword></h2>Being a female athlete is inherently an act of <keyword id="22159411" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="political-defiance" source="keywords">political defiance</keyword>. In recent years, we've seen some outspoken <keyword id="20958966" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="female-athletes" source="keywords">female athletes</keyword> used as props to push political agendas, most notably Megan Rapinoe, the women's soccer player who became a target for her outspoken hatred of Donald Trump, and Brittney Griner, the WNBA player who was wrongfully imprisoned in Russia for most of 2022. Clark is different. She, herself, does not talk politics. She shoots threes and dishes dimes. She attends her contractual media interviews, and <a target="_blank" href="https://www.wsj.com/sports/basketball/caitlin-clark-nike-deal-415ee8ec">fields offers from the world's biggest shoe brands</a> who have been trying to partner with her since she was at school. But it's getting tougher for Clark (and the rest of the WNBA) to focus on work alone. Fouls that wouldn't even be a footnote in NBA coverage — fouls that other women across the WNBA commit and take every game — are suddenly talking points. Male sports commentators who have never given the WNBA airtime are dedicating<a target="_blank" href="https://www.the-sun.com/sport/11661889/angel-reese-skip-bayless-undisputed-caitlin-clark-wnba/"> multiple </a><a target="_blank" href="https://awfulannouncing.com/espn/stephen-a-smith-players-jealous-caitlin-clark.html">segments</a> to Clark's Black opponents, calling them jealous bullies who are out to hurt her. Matt Leinart, a former football player-turned-media personality, <a target="_blank" href="https://x.com/MattLeinartQB/status/1802403432076296466">said</a> on X that the WNBA should suspend Reese for an unintentional foul because it was "bad for the game." ESPN's Pat McAfee, a football pundit, compared Clark to Eminem in an inflammatory rant, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.si.com/wnba/pat-mcafee-caitlin-clark-controversial-rant">saying</a> that people don't want to give her credit because she's white. Last week, <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://affiliate.insider.com?h=47bdb23dc6e6a8ccd55b14f47741d5dc6d6aabbe15a67b9047e0027724fb0486&amp;postID=6671adcfb38735ca9df3934c&amp;postSlug=caitlin-clark-is-a-rorschach-test-for-sports-media-2024-6&amp;site=bi&amp;u=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.espn.com%2Fwnba%2Fstory%2F_%2Fid%2F40288404%2Fsecurity-steps-man-sky-chennedy-carter-team-hotel">security had to intervene</a> whenChennedy Carter, a Chicago Sky player, was confronted by a man outside a hotel in Washington, DC. The man was demanding to know if Carter had reached out to Clark after hard-fouling her in a recent game — a play that, while excessive, was overdramatized by a GOP congressman to issue a formal complaint to the WNBA. Fellow WNBA players started making statements, calling for the firestorm to stop. Many Black players, including Clark's own teammates, <a target="_blank" href="https://x.com/_Breezy_Briii/status/1798537220628107660">spoke up</a> about experiencing excessive racist abuse on social media in recent weeks. When <a target="_blank" href="https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/5563352/2024/06/14/caitlin-clark-wnba-indiana-fever-dijonai-carrington-basketball/">asked</a> about her name being used "as a weapon in the culture wars dividing the country," Clark initially side-stepped the question. "I don't see it. That's not where my focus is," she said. "My focus is here and on basketball. That's where it needs to be, that's where it has been, and I'm just trying to get better on a daily basis." Some WNBA fans and players took issue with that response. And their compensation falls short, too. Media fanfare propelled Clarkinto a historic $28 million deal with Nike, which <a target="_blank" href="https://www.wsj.com/sports/basketball/caitlin-clark-nike-deal-415ee8ec">reportedly came with a signature shoe</a>— a huge moment for women's basketball, but one that stoked controversy because the only other two WNBA players with signature shoes, Sabrina Ionescu and Breanna Stewart, are also white. (Two weeks later, Nike said A'ja Wilson, a Black two-time MVP who has been with Nike since she was the top draft pick in 2018, will have a signature shoe in 2025.) The hope that this new era of WNBA fandom could be everything for everyone is turning into exasperation. <h2>This all says more about commentators than it does about Clark</h2> <div type="image" title="Caitlin Clark is in a unique position, thrust into a role of advocate and spokesperson for the WNBA." height="683" width="1024" msid="111114752" hostid="261"></div>The chaotic coverage of Clark doesn't tell us much about her or the league. It does underscore that the sports media ecosystem is wholly unprepared for the rise of women's basketball. Even before Clark, the price of the WNBA's media rights deal was expected to double in 2025, bringing a game-changing influx of cash to the table — money that can turn salaries from livable to luxurious, and investments into profit. But this moment, which has been building for decades, is being undercut by commentators and brands who are fixated on Clark. "The persistent prevalence of regressive mindsets and instances exemplified by cases involving insatiable demands for dowry underscores a broader societal concern. It highlights the challenges faced by married women, whose intrinsic value and dignity should not be contingent upon their parents' ability to meet the insatiable financial demands from their in-laws," Justice Swarana Kanta Sharma said. The <keyword id="6355392" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="high-court" source="Orion">high court</keyword> said it is disturbing to witness a scenario where parents wish for the well-being of their daughter and her comfort after she leaves her paternal house and tries to settle in the matrimonial home but instead of providing her love and support, the new bride is met with unrelenting greed and harassment from in-laws family. It said the trauma is multiplied and becomes lifelong when the victim of a dowry-related offence gives up her life due to constant torture and harassment, especially when the two daughters she has given birth to and loved also become a ground to harass and traumatise her as if she is solely responsible for the <keyword id="20152579" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="childs-gender" source="Orion">child's gender</keyword>. "Surprisingly, the genetic science in this regard is ignored according to which, the genetic determination of gender of the unborn child when the child is conceived, involves the combination of X and Y chromosomes, with females possessing two X chromosomes (XX) and males having one X and one Y chromosome (XY)." "According to <keyword id="20139732" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="encyclopedia-britannica" source="keywords">Encyclopedia Britannica</keyword>, the outcome of fertilisation depends on whether an unfertilised egg fuses with a sperm carrying an X or Y chromosome, resulting in the birth of a girl or boy, respectively," the high court said. It said the court had dealt with numerous cases of harassment, nagging and suicide or dowry deaths due to the victim being victimised for giving birth to daughters after being constantly harassed over not being able to fulfil her husband and in-laws' desire of "preserving the family tree". Justice Sharma said the court is "constrained to observe that such people need to be educated that it is their son and not their daughter-in-law whose chromosomes through the union of a married couple will decide the gender of their child. "Even if this judgement becomes the birthplace of such enlightenment, it will go a long way to change the mindsets of perpetrators of such crimes and save lives of innocent married women, by using principles of science through principles of law," she said. The high court made the observations while denying bail to the husband in a dowry death case. The allegations against the accused were that he along with his family members used to torture his wife for dowry leading to her committing suicide. It has been alleged by the complainant, father of the deceased woman, that the accused and his family pressured his daughter for additional dowry and financial demands, causing significant distress. It has also been alleged by him that she was taunted and mistreated for giving birth to two daughters. The high court, in its order, said prima facie at this stage, a woman has lost her life for giving birth to daughters, which should be unacceptable to a conscientious society and such offences have to be considered grave and serious when the trial is yet to begin. "In view of the above facts and circumstances, and since the allegations against the present applicant/accused are grave and serious in nature, the charges are yet to be framed and the material witnesses are yet to be examined, this court is not inclined to enlarge him on bail," it said. The court further opined that in a society that emphasises equality and strives for equal progress of women and women empowerment, incidents like this are etched as disheartening markers on the path of equal societal advancement for women. It said the notion that a woman's value diminishes if her parents cannot fulfil dowry expectations of her husband and in-laws reflects a deep-seated bias and discrimination against women. Such expectations not only violate the principles of gender equality but also contribute to an environment where women are objectified and reduced to mere transactions, the court said while acknowledging the profound distress experienced by parents, who in the earnest pursuit of their daughter's happiness, bestowed everything they had to allegedly fulfil the dowry demands of her in-laws.

Society needs to be educated that man's chromosomes decide child's gender: Delhi HC

Something strange is happening between <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/gen-z-changes-political-divides-2019-7">Gen Z men</a> and women. Over the past decade, poll after poll has found that young people are growing more and more divided by gender on a host of political issues. Since 2014, women between the ages of 18 and 29 have steadily become more liberal each year, while young men have not. Today, female Gen Zers are more likely than their male counterparts to vote, care more about political issues, and participate in social movements and protests.While the gender gap is an enduring feature of American politics, at no time in the past quarter century has there been such a rapid divergence between the views of young men and women. The startling speed of the change suggests something more significant is going on than just new demographic patterns, such as rising rates of education or declining adherence to a religion — the change points to some kind of cataclysmal event. After speaking with more than 20 Gen Zers, my colleagues at the Survey Center on American Life and I found that among women, no event was more influential to their political development than the #MeToo movement.In 2017, women around the world began speaking out about their experiences with sexual assault and harassment. Gen Zers were then in high school and college, and for them, the movement came at a formative moment. "Luckily I had that all over social media to shape the way I look at dating and men," a 21-year-old woman told us about #MeToo. She said it allowed her "to use other people's experiences to form a sense of putting a guard up." A 20-year-old woman offered a similar take — that #MeToo empowered her to stand up for herself: "I think it makes me less of a doormat."As I've <a target="_blank" href="https://fivethirtyeight.com/features/why-young-women-might-get-more-women-elected/">written previously</a>, the #MeToo movement united women politically. Although the challenges women face vary dramatically in the US, sexual harassment is a ubiquitous experience impacting women across lines of social class, politics, age, and race. <a target="_blank" href="https://www.npr.org/sections/thetwo-way/2018/02/21/587671849/a-new-survey-finds-eighty-percent-of-women-have-experienced-sexual-harassment#:~:text=It%20found%20that%2081%20percent,sexual%20harassment%20during%20their%20lifetime.">Eight in 10 women</a> say they have been sexually harassed at some point in their lives — and addressing that reality quickly became central for women. After the inauguration of Donald Trump, hundreds of thousands of women marched on Washington in the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/largest-marches-us-history-2017-1">largest single-day protest</a> in American history.But while women were rallying together, many Gen Z men began to feel like society was turning against them. As recently as 2019, less than one-third of young men said that they faced discrimination, according to Pew, but today, close to <a target="_blank" href="https://storylines.substack.com/p/why-young-men-are-turning-against">half of young men</a> believe they face at least some discrimination. In a 2020 survey by the research organization PRRI, half of men agreed with the statement: "These days society seems to punish men just for acting like men."It increasingly feels like <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/gen-z-trust-issues-government-business-college-other-people-institutions-2022-8">Gen Z men and women</a> are living on different planets, each guided by the belief that they are navigating uniquely hostile terrain — and understanding why is crucial to bridging the gap.<h2>#MeToo feminism</h2>The <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-the-metoo-movement-started-where-its-headed-tarana-burke-time-person-of-year-women-2017-12">#MeToo movement</a> established a sense of solidarity among young women. A survey conducted in 2022 found that <a target="_blank" href="https://www.americansurveycenter.org/research/gender-generation-and-abortion-shifting-politics-and-perspectives-after-roe/">two-thirds</a> of young women believe that in most or in every way, what happens to women in the US will have a bearing on their own lives — an idea known as "linked fate" in sociology. But this sentiment was not shared by older women: Only 36% of women older than 65 said the same. This bond has bled into Gen Z women's politics, especially around issues like abortion. A <a target="_blank" href="https://www.americansurveycenter.org/research/gender-generation-and-abortion-shifting-politics-and-perspectives-after-roe/">survey</a> we conducted after <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/supreme-court-abortion-decision-final-ruling-scotus-roe-v-wade-2022-6">Roe v. Wade was overturned</a> and just before the 2022 midterms found that no issue mattered more for young women than abortion: 61% said it was a critical concern, while only 32% of young men said the same. In the 2022 midterm elections, all young voters strongly supported Democratic candidates, but young women demonstrated <a target="_blank" href="https://www.slowboring.com/p/are-young-men-really-trending-to?utm_source=%2Fsearch%2Fyoung%2520men%2520and%2520vote&amp;utm_medium=reader2">much greater support than men</a>. Gen Z women have also united around the importance of female leadership and representation. A <a target="_blank" href="https://www.pewresearch.org/social-trends/2023/09/27/views-of-obstacles-for-women-seeking-high-political-office/">recent Pew poll</a> found that 72% of women aged 18 to 29 believe there are too few women serving in "high political offices," a steep jump from the roughly half of women over 50 and less than half of young men who said the same. More than seven in 10 young women said that the lack of female representation in political office is because women are held to higher standards than men.This newfound <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/discrimination-at-work-women-all-ages-jobs-hiring-employer-bosses-2023-8">solidarity among women</a> is also showing up in the workplace. For decades a strong majority of men and women alike had reported a clear preference for a male boss. But the percentage of women who said they preferred a male boss plummeted 12 points between 2014 and 2017. By that year, the year of the most recent polling, a majority of women reported preferring a <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/female-managers-pay-employees-more-fairly-salaries-than-males-study-2022-9">female boss</a> for the first time.At the same time, women's dissatisfaction with the status quo has only intensified. In 2016, 61% of women said they were satisfied with the way women are treated in American society, according to a Gallup survey. Today, that has dropped to 44%.<h2>Men shift to the right</h2>As women's political priorities have solidified, young men's priorities have melted into mush. Surveys consistently show that young men are far less likely than women to say any particular issue is personally important to them. A <a target="_blank" href="https://www.americansurveycenter.org/research/the-2024-presidential-election-evolving-political-coalitions-and-familiar-partisan-divisions/">survey we conducted last year</a> found that young women expressed statistically significant greater concern for 11 out of 15 different issues, including drug addiction, crime, climate change, and gun violence. There was not a single issue that young men cared about significantly more than young women.Young men are also unhappy. For a growing number, feminism has less to do with promoting gender equality and more to do with simply attacking men. A 2022 survey by the Southern Poverty Law Center found that 46% of Democratic men under 50 agreed that feminism has done more harm than good — even more Republican men agreed. In our recent poll, roughly one in four male Gen Zers said they have experienced more gender discrimination than older men. And <a target="_blank" href="https://www.americansurveycenter.org/research/generation-z-and-the-transformation-of-american-adolescence-how-gen-zs-formative-experiences-shape-its-politics-priorities-and-future/">less than half of Gen Z men</a> identified as feminists, with only half saying they support the #MeToo movement, compared to 72% of women.One young man we interviewed said he didn't pay much attention to #MeToo: "It just seemed like a bit of buzz going on around celebrities, and awful things are happening in the world all the time. If I did ponder, it would bring me down and so I just choose to not even pay attention." Another said #MeToo was just something he picked up from "a woman's study class" in college but not anything that he thinks much about.The lack of interest could be because Gen Z men have their own issues. Richard Reeves, the founder of the American Institute for Boys and Men, has meticulously documented the challenges facing young men in America: They are <a target="_blank" href="https://www.the74million.org/article/author-richard-reeves-on-the-boys-education-problem-we-dont-like-to-talk-about/">struggling more</a> in school, are <a target="_blank" href="https://www.pewresearch.org/short-reads/2021/11/08/whats-behind-the-growing-gap-between-men-and-women-in-college-completion/">less likely</a> than women to go to and graduate from college, have <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/evryman-mens-group-loneliness-feelings-therapy-2023-8">fewer close friends </a>than previous generations, and are four times as likely to <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/cdc-teenage-gen-z-american-suicide-epidemic">commit</a> <a target="_blank" href="https://aibm.org/research/male-suicide/">suicide</a> than women. Reeves argues that this state of affairs requires that we hold two seemingly contradictory ideas at once: Men at the highest rungs of the economic ladder are still advantaged by a system that perpetuates gender inequality, while men on the lower rungs of society face unique challenges because they are men. While women have turned to the left for answers to their problems, men are finding support on the right. Trump helped redefine conservatism as a <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/trump-aide-says-president-is-the-most-masculine-in-us-history-2021-1">distinctly masculine</a> ideology, stoking grievances and directing young men's frustration toward liberals and feminists. There are signs the message is resonating: <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-gen-z-college-republicans-want-gop-to-change-2020-11">Republican affiliation</a> among white men aged 18 to 24 jumped from 28% in 2019 to 41% in 2023, according to a <a target="_blank" href="https://twitter.com/dellavolpe/status/1731053473070793013">Harvard Youth Poll</a>. Outside politics, right-leaning figures such as <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/teachers-and-parents-talk-about-andrew-tates-influence-on-kids-2023-1">Andrew Tate</a>, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/elon-musk-says-dei-is-just-another-word-for-racism-2024-1">Elon Musk</a>, and Jordan Peterson are attracting young men looking for an ideological home.Most young men are probably not interested in making America great again, but they do feel acutely the need to secure a place for themselves in a culture that readily identifies male advantage but ignores the challenges young men face. Out of a sense of increased insecurity, more young men are adopting a zero-sum view of gender equality — if women gain, men will inevitably lose. It's an outlook that makes them defensive, encourages them to ignore or overlook enduring challenges women face in society, and can even spur misogyny. As one 35-year-old man told <a target="_blank" href="https://www.pewresearch.org/social-trends/2022/09/29/more-than-twice-as-many-americans-support-than-oppose-the-metoo-movement/">Pew in 2022 about #MeToo</a>: "Too many people are taking advantage of a serious situation because it's trendy or they are greedy or just want attention." And this attitude has real-world consequences: In the online gaming world, 75% of Gen Z women have <a target="_blank" href="https://www.thegamer.com/women-abuse-sexism-in-online-games-depression/">reported experiencing harassment</a>.<h2>No Winners </h2>An <a target="_blank" href="https://www.nytimes.com/2015/03/03/upshot/fewer-women-run-big-companies-than-men-named-john.html">oft-cited statistic</a> that conveys the enduring absurdity of the gender gap is that until <a target="_blank" href="https://www.bloomberg.com/news/newsletters/2023-04-25/women-ceos-at-big-companies-finally-outnumber-those-named-john">very recently</a>, there were more CEOs named John than CEOs who are women. Across most industries, from politics to academia, men in American society still control more resources, earn higher wages, and enjoy more prestige. But few young men have any experience in the boardroom, and in the classroom, it's their female peers who are crushing it.But both genders are feeling increasingly precarious — and it's causing them to drift further apart. A recent <a target="_blank" href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/2023/11/22/marriage-polarization-dating-trump/">Washington Post editorial</a> lamented what this growing political divide means for dating and marriage: If Gen Z men and women can't agree on politics, it's going to get harder for them to find a partner. But if anything, that understates the problem. Based on our interviews, there appears to be a growing eagerness among both young men and women to blame their problems on each other. Wu's mother was a teacher who valued education for both genders, while her father was an engineer who also advocated for women's equality. He became an activist during the 1911 Revolution, which ended imperial rule and established the more modernized Republic of China.Wu was especially close with her father, who encouraged her interests and surrounded her with books, magazines, and newspapers. Instead of children's stories, Wu would listen to her father read from scientific journals, <a href="https://www.google.com/books/edition/Madame_Wu_Chien_Shiung/C0PLygAACAAJ?hl=en" target="_blank" rel="noopener">according to</a> her biography. She attended an elementary school for girls her father founded.A gifted student, Wu went on to study physics at prominent institutions in China. A female professor encouraged her to earn her Ph. D. abroad at the University of Michigan. When she was 24 years old, Wu set sail for the United States in August 1936. It would be the last time she saw her parents alive: Although her family survived the impending world war, the establishment of Communist rule in 1949 made it impossible for Wu to travel home for many years.<h2>The 'Chinese Madame Curie'</h2>Her plans to study in Michigan quickly changed after she visited the University of California, Berkeley. There, she met the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/manhattan-project-scientists-who-won-nobel-prizes-2023-7">Nobel Prize-winning nuclear physicist Ernest Lawrence</a>, who, along with other pioneering researchers like J. Robert Oppenheimer, were turning the campus into the epicenter of the Manhattan Project. (It may have bolstered her decision to have discovered that at the relatively conservative Michigan, women weren't allowed to use the front entrance, per Wu's biography.)Wu quickly impressed her colleagues with her work on nuclear physics. Lawrence <a href="https://www.cta-observatory.org/building-from-diversity-article-chien-shiung-wu/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">described</a> Wu as "the most talented experimental physicist he had ever known, and that she would make any laboratory shine." Oppenheimer himself <a href="https://www.google.com/books/edition/Madame_Wu_Chien_shiung_The_First_Lady_Of/r30GCwAAQBAJ?hl=en&amp;gbpv=1" target="_blank" rel="noopener">reportedly</a> said, "Go invite Ms. Wu — she knows everything about the absorption cross section of neutrons." <ul class="summary-list"><li>The number of years it will take to achieve <keyword id="12021081" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="gender" source="Orion">gender</keyword> parity has increased to 135, according to a new <keyword id="11902211" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="world-economic-forum" source="Orion">World Economic Forum</keyword> report.</li><li>At an Open Forum session in Davos, leaders and change-makers met to discuss the report and to convene on what is needed to push through change.</li></ul>At an Open Forum session in Davos, industry leaders, NGOs, and politicians convened to discuss the global outlook for gender equity. The session ran on the heels of a recent World Economic Forum <a href="https://www.weforum.org/agenda/2022/03/international-womens-day-gender-gap-inequality/">report</a> that says it will take 135 years to close the global gender gap if we continue to move at the current pace. The gap, which measures how long it will take to achieve gender parity, has widened since the last time it was recorded. Although some progress has been made in the fields of education and health, Open Forum panelists agreed that policymakers must prioritize political empowerment and economic opportunity if we are to make real headway."There was a great belief that if we close the health gaps, if we closed the education gaps, then naturally, the economic and political gaps would close — turns out there isn't anything natural about it," Laura Liswood, Secretary-General of the Council of Women World Leader,s told Davos attendees. Affirmative action mechanisms have been useful in getting historically marginalized groups into governments and businesses. But, "they definitely have an upgrade problem," said Liswood. "You can get them in, but for some reason, you can't get them up [the ladder]."<h2>Political empowerment </h2>Ensuring there are enough women in leadership roles, especially in <keyword id="11893346" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="politics" source="Orion">politics</keyword>, will prove critical to making the future more gender-inclusive. Yet across <a href="https://www.weforum.org/agenda/2022/03/international-womens-day-gender-gap-inequality/">156 countries</a> the report surveyed, women represented 26% of about 35,500 parliament seats and around 23% of more than 3,400 ministers worldwide.Philipp Wilhelm, Mayor of Davos, told the Open Forum that he has always found it harder to motivate women to take up political roles. "But if you don't give up, and if you look for women, you will find women who will candidate," he said. Pushing through affirmative measures in his Swiss municipality resulted in 16 women out of 26 candidates in total running for recent council elections. However, as fellow panelist, poet, and outgoing curator of Oakland Hub, Samantha Akwei, said, "You can put a woman in a position of power, but that doesn't equate to her having power." Women must not only enter politics but policies and laws must also change if we are to close the gender divide. Discriminatory laws include those around maternity leave that prioritize women as caregivers and place less value on their roles in the workplace, as well as laws around property ownership and inheritance rights, safety, and mobility around the world. "There are still over 100 countries that have some discriminatory laws in place around economic participation," said Liswood. "From hours you can work to amount of weight you can lift, there are all kinds of examples that have subtle impacts." Improving economic opportunity and participation is a prerogative, agreed attendees.<h2>Economic participation </h2>With <a href="https://www.imf.org/en/Publications/WP/Issues/2019/05/06/Is-Technology-Widening-the-Gender-Gap-Automation-and-the-Future-of-Female-Employment-46684">11%</a> of the jobs currently held by women at risk of automation, policymakers must embrace a targeted approach to reskilling women."We know economic empowerment for women globally helps to reinforce their status in a home. It reduces gender-based violence, it reduces unwanted pregnancies," said Liswood. But even income disparities within industries are still not yet bridged. And with the suspension of caregiving and education systems during the pandemic, many women's economic situations have worsened in recent years, the panel heard. In response, Akwei advocated for a "wisdom economy" that champions the kinds of soft skills many women are taught from a young age. The experts also called for policies that encourage more young girls to aspire to STEM careers. "We've now managed to get the girls into schools. But are we getting them into careers that have been traditionally considered male-centered ones?" Angela Oduor Lungati, executive director of Ushahidi Inc, asked the room. From facing discrimination at daycare in Switzerland to trying to recruit more women entrepreneurs in Brazil, Open Forum audience members came forward with their own stories of trying and failing to tackle gender-based discrimination, asking panelists how they could end the gender gaps they witness day-to-day.Mentorship schemes and sponsorships may go some way to making these shifts, the panel advised. But we can only go so far as a global community without a fundamental shift in mindset. A new framing around women's social and economic roles is one that will benefit everyone, they said."<keyword id="11907055" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="gender-equality" source="Orion">Gender equality</keyword> is for all genders," said Liswood. "Because if it's unequal for some women, it's unequal for some men, your institutions are unequal in some way." She added that while privilege may vary depending on who you are, "we all need to get a better handle on gender parity issues — it's not a zero-sum game."
