<ul class="summary-list"><li>Men far outnumber women as news influencers on social media, per a new Pew Research Center study.</li><li>That contrasts with other parts of the creator industry, where women dominate.</li></ul>News anchoring was once a male-dominated enterprise led by figures like Walter Cronkite and Edward R. Murrow. That gender skew is showing up again in the latest platform for news: social media.Male influencers far outnumber female creators when it comes to delivering the news on social media, according to a new <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.pewresearch.org/journalism/2024/11/18/americas-news-influencers/">study</a> from the Pew Research Center.Pew analyzed a sample set of 500 news influencers with at least 100,000 followers and found that 63% were male and 30% were female. John Della Volpe, director of polling at the Harvard Kennedy School Institute of Politics, <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.nytimes.com/2024/10/21/opinion/trump-gen-z-men-harris.html">described</a> the strategy as "bro whispering." But in the wake of her election loss, some political commentators <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P4QHOS4osEM">lamented</a> her decision not to appear on Rogan's podcast, which is consistently the top-ranked show on Spotify and Apple Podcasts.In Pew's analysis, there was a much smaller (and flipped) gender gap in the overall audience for news content on social media among young people. Twenty-three percent of US adult women under 30 said they regularly got news from news influencers, compared to 19% of men in that age group."The influencers who are providing news and people who are getting news don't necessarily look the same," Galen Stocking, a senior computational social scientist at Pew who coauthored the report, told BI.This suggests that a strategy of trying to reach women voters by focusing on podcasts anchored by women could miss a portion of the electorate.<h2 id="14166cf2-6038-4c35-86d0-7299411a9a16">Are news influencers widening the US political gender gap?</h2>Young people are increasingly divided along partisan lines. Men between the ages of 18 and 29 are becoming more conservative and women in that age group are becoming more liberal, per <a target="_blank" href="https://news.gallup.com/poll/649826/exploring-young-women-leftward-expansion.aspx">Gallup polling</a>. The extent to which media diets are contributing to that change is harder to drill down, however.Pew's sample set of news influencers skewed slightly conservative, with 27% identifying as right-leaning and 21% as left-leaning. Still, only around half of the news influencers explicitly shared their political orientation.Whatever their impact on partisanship, creators have clearly taken on a bigger role in shaping the information landscape as traditional newsrooms have lost some trust. Fifty-nine percent of US adults surveyed by Pew in September said they had a lot or some trust in information from national news organizations, down from 76% in 2016. Trust in information from social media remained steady over the same period, growing from 34% to 37%.<h2 id="210dd0f2-1334-4ec8-80f2-1c59ca935fa9">YouTube had the biggest gender gap, while TikTok's was minimal</h2>The gender divide among news influencers was fairly consistent across all platforms in Pew's study. Murmu said no civilised society can allow daughters and sisters to be subjected to such atrocities. "The nation is bound to be outraged, and so am I," she wrote. There were media reports that I had to undergo a gender test, that I am not a woman but a man and that is why I cannot play in the women's category. At that time, the biggest challenge was to lead a normal life in society. So, with what is happening at the Olympics, she (Imane) will perhaps face a lot of issues .She will face immense mental pressure.'' "Before we go to the Olympics, we face a number of tests - Doping Test, Hormonal Level Test, Gender Test. So, if she is facing a gender issue, how did she participate in the Olympics? She has played in a lot of competitions before this. She must have undergone tests there too. When IOC made no complaints that she is male by gender, how can someone question her? She has lost 9 games so far (in her career). Today, she (Angela Carini) is questioning as she lost the game. She would not have raised a question had she won," she added. Following the match, the Italian was in tears and refused to shake hands with Khelif, as per ESPN. In the post-match interview, Khelif said, as quoted by ESPN, that she felt severe pain in her nose during the fight. She also said that she was not going to judge if Khelif should be allowed to compete at the Olympics. "I felt a severe pain in my nose, and with the maturity of a boxer, I said 'enough,' because I didn't want to, I did not want to, I could not finish the match," Carini said. "I am not here to judge or pass judgment. If an athlete is this way, and in that sense, it is not right or it is right, it is not up to me to decide. I just did my job as a boxer. I got into the ring and fought. I did it with my head held high and with a broken heart for not having finished the last kilometre," she added. Just before her gold medal bout in the International Boxing Association (IBA) Women's Championships held in New Delhi last year, Khelif was disqualified as she had failed to meet IBA's eligibility criteria. But she was allowed to compete in the Paris Olympics by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) task force, which is running past two Olympic boxing events, as IBA has been banned from the past two years in Olympics due to governance issues, lack of financial transparency and instances of corruption in judging and refereeing. IOC defended the rights of Khelif and Lin Yu-ting, another boxer under scrutiny due to failing an unspecified eligibility requirement in a biochemical test, to compete in the Olympics. Replying to the controversy, the IOC said on Thursday in a statement, "All athletes participating in the boxing tournament of the Olympic Games Paris 2024 comply with the competition's eligibility and entry regulations, as well as all applicable medical regulations set by the Paris 2024 Boxing Unit (PBU). As with previous Olympic boxing competitions, the gender and age of the athletes are based on their passports." "These rules also applied during the qualification period, including the boxing tournaments of the 2023 European Games, Asian Games, Pan American Games and Pacific Games, the ad hoc 2023 African qualifying tournament in Dakar (SEN) and two world qualifying tournaments held in Busto Arsizio (ITA) and Bangkok (THA) in 2024, which involved a total of 1,471 different boxers from 172 National Olympic Committees (NOCs), the Boxing Refugee Team and Individual Neutral Athletes, and featured over 2,000 qualification bouts," the IOC statement read. The IOC said that the athletes in question had been subjects of an arbitrary decision by the International Boxing Association earlier. "We have seen in reports misleading information about two female athletes competing at the Olympic Games Paris 2024. The two athletes have been competing in international boxing competitions for many years in the women's category, including the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020, International Boxing Association (IBA) World Championships and IBA-sanctioned tournaments. These two athletes were the victims of a sudden and arbitrary decision by the IBA. Towards the end of the IBA World Championships in 2023, they were suddenly disqualified without any due process," the IOC said. "According to the IBA minutes available on their website, this decision was initially taken solely by the IBA Secretary General and CEO. The IBA Board only ratified it afterwards and only subsequently requested that a procedure to follow in similar cases in the future be established and reflected in the IBA Regulations. The minutes also say that the IBA should "establish a clear procedure on gender testing. The current aggression against these two athletes is based entirely on this arbitrary decision, which was taken without any proper procedure - especially considering that these athletes had been competing in top-level competition for many years. Such an approach is contrary to good governance," the IOC added. The IOC said it was committed to protecting the human rights of all athletes participating in the Olympic Games as per the Olympic Charter, the IOC Code of Ethics and the IOC Strategic Framework on Human Rights. The IOC further said it was saddened by the abuse that the two athletes are currently receiving, the release added.

She often felt some of the best resources for the chip fab, like top construction workers, were dedicated to teams with more men, while women were given less leeway to make mistakes."We're very isolated, very often in a resource sense," she said.This dynamic is not specific to one company; <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/women-utah-silicon-slopes-difficulties-tech-jobs-2023-10">gender disparity</a> is widespread throughout the tech industry. While the chip industry makes efforts to expand the recruiting pool in general so that hiring can be more inclusive, the changes can feel incremental.According to the most recently published corporate social responsibility reports, about 20% of <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://images.nvidia.com/aem-dam/Solutions/documents/FY2024-NVIDIA-Corporate-Sustainability-Report.pdf">Nvidia's total workforce</a> are women. Women make up about 15% of technical roles, 18% of managers, and 40% of executive officers. <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.amd.com/en/corporate/corporate-responsibility/esg-data-tables.html">AMD's workforce</a> is 24% women. About 19% of engineers, 14% of senior management, and 17% of the executive team are women. Women make up 28% of <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://csrreportbuilder.intel.com/pdfbuilder/pdfs/CSR-2023-24-Full-Report.pdf">Intel's workforce</a>, and they hold 25% of technical roles and 19% of senior leadership. <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.micron.com/content/dam/micron/global/public/documents/about/diversity-and-inclusion/2023-diversity-and-inclusion-report.pdf">At Micron</a>, 31% of its total global workforce is made up of women, and they hold 25% of technical roles, 17% of senior leadership roles, and 21% of leader roles."Intel has a long track record of fostering a diverse and inclusive culture, and it is core to our values," an Intel spokesperson said in a statement.Intel <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://csrreportbuilder.intel.com/pdfbuilder/pdfs/CSR-2023-24-Full-Report.pdf">set goals</a> to increase its female senior leadership representation to 25% and technical roles to 40% by 2030. Pipeline program participants also cited in a 2023 survey, an improvement in their perception of growth and development at the company. Micron did not respond to requests for comment at the time of publication.<h2 id="f746dd30-b0bf-4eec-9c37-7c263414fbd7">Few women in leadership</h2>One former Intel process engineer, who still works in the chips industry, said she decided to leave the company because she felt that it could be a "hostile environment" at times, with male engineers challenging her when they were not rewarded with projects. The engineer, whose identity is known to Business Insider, asked to remain anonymous because she's not authorized to speak to the press."There were also other high-performing men on my team who were getting the same projects and same opportunities as me, but there were never any complaints made about them," she said.Although Intel made more efforts to hire women, she said she did not see as much effort in promotion. Out of hundreds of people in her department, only two managers were female, she said.A lack of women in leadership can create the perception that female employees have no room to grow, resulting in a higher turnover rate."Attracting talent without a plan to retain the talent just really creates the same cyclical problem," said Jared Tatham, a managing director at Insight Global who oversees its semiconductor recruitment portfolio.<h2 id="2f606934-b1c0-4157-9b12-1401d857878e">Reducing bias in hiring</h2>Clients have requested more gender diversity in the pipeline, said Luke Tomaszko, a managing principal consultant at Acceler8 Talent who works with early-stage hardware companies that focus on AI chip design. He said startups must be conscious of this as they build out the culture and makeup of their teams."The industry can be so male-dominated that if you have a team of 100 men, then it's not really a welcoming environment for a woman to come in," Tomaszko said.Insight Global's Tatham works with clients that range from material suppliers for equipment at foundries to companies that do chip design, testing, and packaging. Since being drafted into the <keyword id="20896960" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="WNBA" source="keywords">WNBA</keyword> in April as the No. 1 overall pick, Clark is having an impressive, albeit inconsistent, rookie campaign. She has struggled at times with the increased physicality at this level, which is extremely normal. But nothing that Clark does — or that is done to Clark — is treated as normal. These days, watching Caitlin Clark play basketball has become a <keyword id="8151448" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Rorschach-test" source="Orion">Rorschach test</keyword> for a deeply divided country. <h2>How Caitlin Clark become the center of a <keyword id="22159409" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="culture-war" source="keywords">culture war</keyword></h2>Being a female athlete is inherently an act of <keyword id="22159411" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="political-defiance" source="keywords">political defiance</keyword>. In recent years, we've seen some outspoken <keyword id="20958966" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="female-athletes" source="keywords">female athletes</keyword> used as props to push political agendas, most notably Megan Rapinoe, the women's soccer player who became a target for her outspoken hatred of Donald Trump, and Brittney Griner, the WNBA player who was wrongfully imprisoned in Russia for most of 2022. Clark is different. She, herself, does not talk politics. She shoots threes and dishes dimes. She attends her contractual media interviews, and <a target="_blank" href="https://www.wsj.com/sports/basketball/caitlin-clark-nike-deal-415ee8ec">fields offers from the world's biggest shoe brands</a> who have been trying to partner with her since she was at school. But it's getting tougher for Clark (and the rest of the WNBA) to focus on work alone. Fouls that wouldn't even be a footnote in NBA coverage — fouls that other women across the WNBA commit and take every game — are suddenly talking points. Male sports commentators who have never given the WNBA airtime are dedicating<a target="_blank" href="https://www.the-sun.com/sport/11661889/angel-reese-skip-bayless-undisputed-caitlin-clark-wnba/"> multiple </a><a target="_blank" href="https://awfulannouncing.com/espn/stephen-a-smith-players-jealous-caitlin-clark.html">segments</a> to Clark's Black opponents, calling them jealous bullies who are out to hurt her. Matt Leinart, a former football player-turned-media personality, <a target="_blank" href="https://x.com/MattLeinartQB/status/1802403432076296466">said</a> on X that the WNBA should suspend Reese for an unintentional foul because it was "bad for the game." ESPN's Pat McAfee, a football pundit, compared Clark to Eminem in an inflammatory rant, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.si.com/wnba/pat-mcafee-caitlin-clark-controversial-rant">saying</a> that people don't want to give her credit because she's white. Last week, <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://affiliate.insider.com?h=47bdb23dc6e6a8ccd55b14f47741d5dc6d6aabbe15a67b9047e0027724fb0486&amp;postID=6671adcfb38735ca9df3934c&amp;postSlug=caitlin-clark-is-a-rorschach-test-for-sports-media-2024-6&amp;site=bi&amp;u=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.espn.com%2Fwnba%2Fstory%2F_%2Fid%2F40288404%2Fsecurity-steps-man-sky-chennedy-carter-team-hotel">security had to intervene</a> whenChennedy Carter, a Chicago Sky player, was confronted by a man outside a hotel in Washington, DC. The man was demanding to know if Carter had reached out to Clark after hard-fouling her in a recent game — a play that, while excessive, was overdramatized by a GOP congressman to issue a formal complaint to the WNBA. Fellow WNBA players started making statements, calling for the firestorm to stop. Many Black players, including Clark's own teammates, <a target="_blank" href="https://x.com/_Breezy_Briii/status/1798537220628107660">spoke up</a> about experiencing excessive racist abuse on social media in recent weeks. When <a target="_blank" href="https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/5563352/2024/06/14/caitlin-clark-wnba-indiana-fever-dijonai-carrington-basketball/">asked</a> about her name being used "as a weapon in the culture wars dividing the country," Clark initially side-stepped the question. "I don't see it. That's not where my focus is," she said. "My focus is here and on basketball. That's where it needs to be, that's where it has been, and I'm just trying to get better on a daily basis." Some WNBA fans and players took issue with that response. "Silence is a luxury," Connecticut Sun forward Dijonai Carrington <a target="_blank" href="https://x.com/DijonaiVictoria/status/1801356856985850161">wrote on X</a>. Carrington vocalized a brewing frustration about one (white, straight) rookie being awarded more mainstream credit, plaudits, and sympathy than we've ever really seen in the WNBA's existence. <div type="image" title="Chicago Sky" height="683" width="1024" msid="111114742" hostid="261"></div>Black women built, sustained, at times even saved the WNBA during its first 28 years. Their stories often go untold: a study found that in 2020, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.powerplays.news/p/racisms-central-role-in-wnba-coverage">four of the five most talked about WNBA players</a> in the media were white, despite 80% of the postseason awards being won by Black players. And their compensation falls short, too. Media fanfare propelled Clarkinto a historic $28 million deal with Nike, which <a target="_blank" href="https://www.wsj.com/sports/basketball/caitlin-clark-nike-deal-415ee8ec">reportedly came with a signature shoe</a>— a huge moment for women's basketball, but one that stoked controversy because the only other two WNBA players with signature shoes, Sabrina Ionescu and Breanna Stewart, are also white. (Two weeks later, Nike said A'ja Wilson, a Black two-time MVP who has been with Nike since she was the top draft pick in 2018, will have a signature shoe in 2025.) The hope that this new era of WNBA fandom could be everything for everyone is turning into exasperation. <h2>This all says more about commentators than it does about Clark</h2> <div type="image" title="Caitlin Clark is in a unique position, thrust into a role of advocate and spokesperson for the WNBA." height="683" width="1024" msid="111114752" hostid="261"></div>The chaotic coverage of Clark doesn't tell us much about her or the league. It does underscore that the sports media ecosystem is wholly unprepared for the rise of women's basketball. Even before Clark, the price of the WNBA's media rights deal was expected to double in 2025, bringing a game-changing influx of cash to the table — money that can turn salaries from livable to luxurious, and investments into profit. But this moment, which has been building for decades, is being undercut by commentators and brands who are fixated on Clark. While there's no doubt her exceptional skill is a big reason why <a target="_blank" href="https://affiliate.insider.com?h=854d906b2c55a75f0a812ef8aca1a188c38bcd7da3106113ddd163fc78b1aa5c&amp;postID=6671adcfb38735ca9df3934c&amp;postSlug=caitlin-clark-is-a-rorschach-test-for-sports-media-2024-6&amp;site=bi&amp;u=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.espn.com%2Fwnba%2Fstory%2F_%2Fid%2F40326422%2Fwnba-earns-record-tv-ratings-1st-month-record-attendance">ratings nearly tripled</a> during the first month of the season, it doesn't do Clark or the WNBA any favors to paint her as a precious legend in a league of her own who needs to be protected. All these projections — from Clark's supporters and detractors — infantilize every player on the court. She is strong, and played the best game of her WNBA career so far on Sunday. She's working hard to diversify her game, to adjust to the next level, on and off the court. In one of her most recent interviews, Clark got more direct than ever. "Everybody in our world deserves the same amount of respect," Clark told James Boyd of <a target="_blank" href="https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/5564661/2024/06/14/caitlin-clark-agenda-comments/">The Athletic</a>. "The women in our league deserve the same amount of respect, so people should not be using my name to push those agendas." She's growing. It's time for the rest of us to do the same. Thirty years later, we are still paving our own way.<h2 id="3f43877e-4709-49e0-8b9b-41bcbf1a9618">Our wedding was unique</h2>We first went to a local jewelry store to buy my <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/guides/style/quince-diamond-engagement-ring-review">engagement ring</a> and our wedding bands. I paid for all of them because we were both in graduate school, and I had more money than Steve.Later, he accompanied me to a bridal shop. The saleswoman who assisted us was clearly shocked that I wanted to model several possibilities for Steve and have him help me choose my <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/wedding-dress-shopping-what-to-know-before-bridal-appointment-2024-1">wedding dress</a>. But she allowed it.We got married in the chapel of our graduate school, the Lutheran Theological Seminary at Gettysburg. Because it was in Pennsylvania and my <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/bridesmaids-rising-wedding-costs-gen-z-millennials-2024-8">maid of honor</a> (my best friend from high school) lived in New Orleans, she did not meet Steve until a couple of days before the wedding. Neither did the other bridesmaids, who lived in Mississippi. I didn't have a bridal shower or a bachelorette party.On the wedding day, my maid of honor was more anxious than I was. Standing in front of a crowd and being the center of attention was nothing new for me; I had led worship many times. And I was certain Steve was right for me.<h2 id="a6bb1ee8-4202-4bc0-adbb-66f75aaad999">Our marriage looked different than what was expected of us</h2>After we graduated from seminary, Steve and I were pastors of different congregations. We didn't worship together and rarely met the members of each other's churches.We defied <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/gen-z-bad-office-etiquette-good-workplace-practices-succeed-2024-4">social norms</a> at home, too. We didn't have kids. Steve did (and still does) the cooking; I pay the bills. Steve also does most of the cleaning and packing when we move. I research housing options, rent the U-Haul truck, forward our mail, and open accounts for the internet and other service providers. I also plan our vacations and local outings.I have occasionally had <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/job-seeker-applied-more-than-2000-roles-2024-9">full-time jobs</a> while Steve was unemployed; we've also moved when I was offered a job in a distant city. I've had more evenings out and taken more trips with friends than Steve has.Some people — usually men — believe that traditional gender roles require women to obey men. Steve knew that I would never be a silent or submissive wife and did not want me to be. Meanwhile, I knew that he would never compromise his ethics to make more money or climb the <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/millennials-descend-corporate-ladder-less-stress-more-money-2024-4">corporate ladder</a>, and I did not want him to.<h2 id="098780c9-39be-4381-8e87-616a8f47ebf9">Three decades later, we're happy we went against the norms</h2>This year marked our 33rd anniversary. We still do what's best for us and don't care what others think. We're <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/middle-aged-man-father-loneliness-struggled-make-friends-2024-6">middle-aged</a> now and live in a one-bedroom apartment.We defied what was expected of us again when we started new careers in our 50s. I'm now a freelance writer and mental health peer guide. I also have two part-time jobs as an ACT/SAT exam prep tutor and a church office administrator. Both are remote and let me control my work schedule. My husband is an Uber driver and a software developer.We're ignoring social norms like we always have because it always worked for us. Paving our own path has brought us joy, so we aren't going to stop now.

This thoughtful compromise has strengthened our mutual respect.Another challenge was reconciling our differing views on the afterlife. Initially, it was difficult to accept that Katy's beliefs included the idea of non-believers going to hell. We both strive to show love and kindness, serve others generously, and remain authentic. These shared values are the foundation of our relationship and have helped us overcome any challenges.Ultimately, our love for each other bridges our cultural and religious differences. Something strange is happening between <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/gen-z-changes-political-divides-2019-7">Gen Z men</a> and women. Over the past decade, poll after poll has found that young people are growing more and more divided by gender on a host of political issues. Since 2014, women between the ages of 18 and 29 have steadily become more liberal each year, while young men have not. Today, female Gen Zers are more likely than their male counterparts to vote, care more about political issues, and participate in social movements and protests.While the gender gap is an enduring feature of American politics, at no time in the past quarter century has there been such a rapid divergence between the views of young men and women. The startling speed of the change suggests something more significant is going on than just new demographic patterns, such as rising rates of education or declining adherence to a religion — the change points to some kind of cataclysmal event. After speaking with more than 20 Gen Zers, my colleagues at the Survey Center on American Life and I found that among women, no event was more influential to their political development than the #MeToo movement.In 2017, women around the world began speaking out about their experiences with sexual assault and harassment. Gen Zers were then in high school and college, and for them, the movement came at a formative moment. "Luckily I had that all over social media to shape the way I look at dating and men," a 21-year-old woman told us about #MeToo. She said it allowed her "to use other people's experiences to form a sense of putting a guard up." A 20-year-old woman offered a similar take — that #MeToo empowered her to stand up for herself: "I think it makes me less of a doormat."As I've <a target="_blank" href="https://fivethirtyeight.com/features/why-young-women-might-get-more-women-elected/">written previously</a>, the #MeToo movement united women politically. Although the challenges women face vary dramatically in the US, sexual harassment is a ubiquitous experience impacting women across lines of social class, politics, age, and race. <a target="_blank" href="https://www.npr.org/sections/thetwo-way/2018/02/21/587671849/a-new-survey-finds-eighty-percent-of-women-have-experienced-sexual-harassment#:~:text=It%20found%20that%2081%20percent,sexual%20harassment%20during%20their%20lifetime.">Eight in 10 women</a> say they have been sexually harassed at some point in their lives — and addressing that reality quickly became central for women. After the inauguration of Donald Trump, hundreds of thousands of women marched on Washington in the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/largest-marches-us-history-2017-1">largest single-day protest</a> in American history.But while women were rallying together, many Gen Z men began to feel like society was turning against them. As recently as 2019, less than one-third of young men said that they faced discrimination, according to Pew, but today, close to <a target="_blank" href="https://storylines.substack.com/p/why-young-men-are-turning-against">half of young men</a> believe they face at least some discrimination. In a 2020 survey by the research organization PRRI, half of men agreed with the statement: "These days society seems to punish men just for acting like men."It increasingly feels like <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/gen-z-trust-issues-government-business-college-other-people-institutions-2022-8">Gen Z men and women</a> are living on different planets, each guided by the belief that they are navigating uniquely hostile terrain — and understanding why is crucial to bridging the gap.<h2>#MeToo feminism</h2>The <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-the-metoo-movement-started-where-its-headed-tarana-burke-time-person-of-year-women-2017-12">#MeToo movement</a> established a sense of solidarity among young women. A survey conducted in 2022 found that <a target="_blank" href="https://www.americansurveycenter.org/research/gender-generation-and-abortion-shifting-politics-and-perspectives-after-roe/">two-thirds</a> of young women believe that in most or in every way, what happens to women in the US will have a bearing on their own lives — an idea known as "linked fate" in sociology. But this sentiment was not shared by older women: Only 36% of women older than 65 said the same. This bond has bled into Gen Z women's politics, especially around issues like abortion. A <a target="_blank" href="https://www.americansurveycenter.org/research/gender-generation-and-abortion-shifting-politics-and-perspectives-after-roe/">survey</a> we conducted after <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/supreme-court-abortion-decision-final-ruling-scotus-roe-v-wade-2022-6">Roe v. Wade was overturned</a> and just before the 2022 midterms found that no issue mattered more for young women than abortion: 61% said it was a critical concern, while only 32% of young men said the same. In the 2022 midterm elections, all young voters strongly supported Democratic candidates, but young women demonstrated <a target="_blank" href="https://www.slowboring.com/p/are-young-men-really-trending-to?utm_source=%2Fsearch%2Fyoung%2520men%2520and%2520vote&amp;utm_medium=reader2">much greater support than men</a>. Gen Z women have also united around the importance of female leadership and representation. A <a target="_blank" href="https://www.pewresearch.org/social-trends/2023/09/27/views-of-obstacles-for-women-seeking-high-political-office/">recent Pew poll</a> found that 72% of women aged 18 to 29 believe there are too few women serving in "high political offices," a steep jump from the roughly half of women over 50 and less than half of young men who said the same. More than seven in 10 young women said that the lack of female representation in political office is because women are held to higher standards than men.This newfound <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/discrimination-at-work-women-all-ages-jobs-hiring-employer-bosses-2023-8">solidarity among women</a> is also showing up in the workplace. For decades a strong majority of men and women alike had reported a clear preference for a male boss. But the percentage of women who said they preferred a male boss plummeted 12 points between 2014 and 2017. By that year, the year of the most recent polling, a majority of women reported preferring a <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/female-managers-pay-employees-more-fairly-salaries-than-males-study-2022-9">female boss</a> for the first time.At the same time, women's dissatisfaction with the status quo has only intensified. In 2016, 61% of women said they were satisfied with the way women are treated in American society, according to a Gallup survey. Today, that has dropped to 44%.<h2>Men shift to the right</h2>As women's political priorities have solidified, young men's priorities have melted into mush. Surveys consistently show that young men are far less likely than women to say any particular issue is personally important to them. A <a target="_blank" href="https://www.americansurveycenter.org/research/the-2024-presidential-election-evolving-political-coalitions-and-familiar-partisan-divisions/">survey we conducted last year</a> found that young women expressed statistically significant greater concern for 11 out of 15 different issues, including drug addiction, crime, climate change, and gun violence. There was not a single issue that young men cared about significantly more than young women.Young men are also unhappy. For a growing number, feminism has less to do with promoting gender equality and more to do with simply attacking men. A 2022 survey by the Southern Poverty Law Center found that 46% of Democratic men under 50 agreed that feminism has done more harm than good — even more Republican men agreed. In our recent poll, roughly one in four male Gen Zers said they have experienced more gender discrimination than older men. And <a target="_blank" href="https://www.americansurveycenter.org/research/generation-z-and-the-transformation-of-american-adolescence-how-gen-zs-formative-experiences-shape-its-politics-priorities-and-future/">less than half of Gen Z men</a> identified as feminists, with only half saying they support the #MeToo movement, compared to 72% of women.One young man we interviewed said he didn't pay much attention to #MeToo: "It just seemed like a bit of buzz going on around celebrities, and awful things are happening in the world all the time. If I did ponder, it would bring me down and so I just choose to not even pay attention." Another said #MeToo was just something he picked up from "a woman's study class" in college but not anything that he thinks much about.The lack of interest could be because Gen Z men have their own issues. Richard Reeves, the founder of the American Institute for Boys and Men, has meticulously documented the challenges facing young men in America: They are <a target="_blank" href="https://www.the74million.org/article/author-richard-reeves-on-the-boys-education-problem-we-dont-like-to-talk-about/">struggling more</a> in school, are <a target="_blank" href="https://www.pewresearch.org/short-reads/2021/11/08/whats-behind-the-growing-gap-between-men-and-women-in-college-completion/">less likely</a> than women to go to and graduate from college, have <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/evryman-mens-group-loneliness-feelings-therapy-2023-8">fewer close friends </a>than previous generations, and are four times as likely to <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/cdc-teenage-gen-z-american-suicide-epidemic">commit</a> <a target="_blank" href="https://aibm.org/research/male-suicide/">suicide</a> than women. Reeves argues that this state of affairs requires that we hold two seemingly contradictory ideas at once: Men at the highest rungs of the economic ladder are still advantaged by a system that perpetuates gender inequality, while men on the lower rungs of society face unique challenges because they are men. While women have turned to the left for answers to their problems, men are finding support on the right. Trump helped redefine conservatism as a <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/trump-aide-says-president-is-the-most-masculine-in-us-history-2021-1">distinctly masculine</a> ideology, stoking grievances and directing young men's frustration toward liberals and feminists. There are signs the message is resonating: <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-gen-z-college-republicans-want-gop-to-change-2020-11">Republican affiliation</a> among white men aged 18 to 24 jumped from 28% in 2019 to 41% in 2023, according to a <a target="_blank" href="https://twitter.com/dellavolpe/status/1731053473070793013">Harvard Youth Poll</a>. Outside politics, right-leaning figures such as <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/teachers-and-parents-talk-about-andrew-tates-influence-on-kids-2023-1">Andrew Tate</a>, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/elon-musk-says-dei-is-just-another-word-for-racism-2024-1">Elon Musk</a>, and Jordan Peterson are attracting young men looking for an ideological home.Most young men are probably not interested in making America great again, but they do feel acutely the need to secure a place for themselves in a culture that readily identifies male advantage but ignores the challenges young men face. Out of a sense of increased insecurity, more young men are adopting a zero-sum view of gender equality — if women gain, men will inevitably lose. It's an outlook that makes them defensive, encourages them to ignore or overlook enduring challenges women face in society, and can even spur misogyny. As one 35-year-old man told <a target="_blank" href="https://www.pewresearch.org/social-trends/2022/09/29/more-than-twice-as-many-americans-support-than-oppose-the-metoo-movement/">Pew in 2022 about #MeToo</a>: "Too many people are taking advantage of a serious situation because it's trendy or they are greedy or just want attention." And this attitude has real-world consequences: In the online gaming world, 75% of Gen Z women have <a target="_blank" href="https://www.thegamer.com/women-abuse-sexism-in-online-games-depression/">reported experiencing harassment</a>.<h2>No Winners </h2>An <a target="_blank" href="https://www.nytimes.com/2015/03/03/upshot/fewer-women-run-big-companies-than-men-named-john.html">oft-cited statistic</a> that conveys the enduring absurdity of the gender gap is that until <a target="_blank" href="https://www.bloomberg.com/news/newsletters/2023-04-25/women-ceos-at-big-companies-finally-outnumber-those-named-john">very recently</a>, there were more CEOs named John than CEOs who are women. Across most industries, from politics to academia, men in American society still control more resources, earn higher wages, and enjoy more prestige. But few young men have any experience in the boardroom, and in the classroom, it's their female peers who are crushing it.But both genders are feeling increasingly precarious — and it's causing them to drift further apart. A recent <a target="_blank" href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/2023/11/22/marriage-polarization-dating-trump/">Washington Post editorial</a> lamented what this growing political divide means for dating and marriage: If Gen Z men and women can't agree on politics, it's going to get harder for them to find a partner. But if anything, that understates the problem. Based on our interviews, there appears to be a growing eagerness among both young men and women to blame their problems on each other. And a society in which men and women see their interests as irrevocably opposed is not one that can last.<a target="_blank" rel="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/author/daniel-cox">Daniel Cox</a> is director of the Survey Center on American Life and research fellow in polling and public opinion at the American Enterprise Institute.

In a world of rapidly evolving dating standards, the largesse is always in doubt when it comes to the right thing to do. According to a study by dating app QuackQuack, people still hold chivalry in high regard. But it’s not confined to male-centric traditions only, and has transcended gender boundaries. The concept of mediaeval knightly code of morals has evolved to denote equality and respect; not just opening doors and pulling out chairs. As per a survey of 18-25 year olds, 45% GenZ daters now regard acts of respect and consideration as chivalry. A considerable percentage of women too (37%) said their expression of chivalry might be different at times. Shared responsibilities in a relationship and going the extra mile for their partner is a part of chivalry, they say. The study also highlights that 43% of GenZ, as opposed to 21% of millennials, think the traditional gender roles in online dating are evolving. The study sampled 15,000 online daters, 18-30, spanning metropolitan and small cities and suburbs, participated in the study. “We have seen a remarkable and consistent change in the gender dynamics. With women confidently taking the initiative and men embracing vulnerability, expressing emotions more openly than the preceding generation of daters,” said Ravi Mittal, founder and CEO of QuackQuack. First move: A disappearing concept? Since time immemorial, custom has had it that men generally ask women out. The study now shows that this too is changing as gender fluidity takes centre stage. The study shows that 23% of men under 28 revealed being approached by women. This shows that GenZs, both men and women, are comfortable taking the lead, enabling a more equal approach to planning and organising romantic engagements. In turn, rejection is also not a woman’s domain now. Men can reject too, said 21% of GenZ daters between 20 and 26. As many as 18% of women revealed getting rejected by their love interest for conflicting values or perspectives. Mard ko dard – Fade away The way men behave in relationships and while dating can be ascribed to pop culture often. The stereotype of ‘men don’t cry’ seems to be finally giving way with the study finding 47% of GenZ daters from Tier 1 and 2 cities that these concepts are being banished in today’s day and age. The study says that GenZ daters are embracing emotional openness and vulnerability, challenging the notion that expressing feelings is a sign of weakness. This shift allows individuals to be authentic and transparent without fear of judgement.

In another video, the planes leave blue-colored smoke-like trails, revealing that their baby is a boy. <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/instagram">Instagram</a> and <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/instagram-playing-the-long-game-against-tiktok-and-winning-2024-3">TikTok</a> users have criticized the party for being excessive and bad for the environment."Thanks for killing the planet," one Instagram user <a target="_blank" href="https://www.instagram.com/p/C4xBwhHN6el/">commented</a> on the influencer's post."Burning fuel, polluting the air, and littering but yeah congrats on the boy," an Instagram user commented on a repost of the video. "This gender reveal made me sad, it's just so wasteful," said another.Stumbriene is the daughter of the former president of Lithuania, Rolandas Paksas, an aerobatics champion and who she said flew one of the airplanes for the party.One video appeared to show blue flares also being set off on the ground to show the sex of the baby, which left people on social media questioning why Stumbriene and her partner bothered using the planes at all.The video gained more traction after being reposted by a TikTok account and racked up more than 60 million views. A quick scroll through the comments shows that the video has triggered people to vent about an unlikely frustration: paper straws."The difference between rich people and the rest of us drinking with a paper straw," one TikTok user commented. "And I drink my Capri Sun w [with] a paper straw for what?" another said.Gender reveal parties have become more extravagant and, in some cases, more dangerous in recent years. Last year a pilot died after <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/pilot-dead-after-gender-reveal-stunt-ends-in-plane-crash-2023-9">his plane crashed during an extravagant gender reveal stunt</a>, and another event sparked a <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/gender-reveal-party-smoke-machine-caused-california-fire-authorities-said-2020-9">fire that burned 7,000 acres of woodland in Arizona.</a>The fire led the blogger who popularized <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/gender-reveal-inventor-says-stop-after-one-sparked-a-wildfire-2020-9">the gender-reveal trend to call for an end to the practice in 2020.</a> "Stop having these stupid parties," she wrote in a Facebook post at the time.
