The actor continued to have a key role until the end of the series in 2019.</p><p>Speaking with The Guardian about her new show "The Tower," Whelan mentioned the sex scenes in "Game of Thrones," saying they were not really choreographed.</p><p>"They used to just say, 'When we shout action, go for it!' and it could be a sort of frenzied mess," Whelan said. "But between the actors, there was always an instinct to check in with each other."</p><p>She continued: "There was a scene in a brothel with a woman and she was so exposed that we talked together about where the camera would be and what she was happy with. A director might say, 'Bit of boob biting, then slap her bum and go!' But I'd always talk it through with the other actor."</p><p>One of Whelan's significant sex scenes in "Game of Thrones" was in season two, episode two, when her character was seduced by her own brother, Theon Lovejoy (Alfie Allen), who did not recognize his sister.</p><div type="image" title="Gemma Whelan on the Game of Thrones red carpet" height="1333" width="2000" msid="87512788" hostid="261"></div><p>Whelan previously said on "<a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sFcQUaZHPqc">The Graham Norton Show</a>" that she auditioned for the show using that scene but originally Yara was seducing her brother.</p><p>Whelan told The Guardian that intimacy directors - professionals who help choreograph intimate scenes between actors - would have been helpful during that scene.</p><p>"Alfie was very much: 'Is this OK? How are we going to make this work?' With intimacy directors, it's choreography - you move there, I move there, and permission and consent is given before you start," she said. "It is a step in the right direction."</p><h2>Whelan also said the #MeToo movement forced Hollywood sets to 'be a bit more genuine'</h2><div type="image" title="The cast of Game of Thrones" height="1064" width="2000" msid="87512789" hostid="261"></div><p>Whelan also talked to The Guardian about how the film industry had changed since the #MeToo movement, which shed a light on sexual abuse and harassment in Hollywood.</p><p>"There's a very different choice of language now," the "Game of Thrones" star said. "If anyone makes an innuendo, everyone shuts down. I think, five or 10 years ago, if there was a double entendre, everyone would jump on the bandwagon and see how many laughs they could raise."</p><p>"I remember when an actor would have a microphone fitted, and sometimes you have to root around the waist," she continued. "And, in the past, there'd be all this, 'And while you're down there, hur, hur!' But now you don't have to play along with things like that."</p><p>Whelan praised the effects of the movement in Hollywood.</p><p>"But I don't miss it," she told The Guardian. "You have to be a bit more genuine now if you're saying hello. You can't hide behind a big hug," she added. "And there's no question mark over it: Do we double kiss? Do we hug? Clasp hands? No, we just say hello to each other."</p><p>Whelan plays Detective Sergeant Sarah Collins in ITV's "The Tower," which premieres in the UK on Monday.</p>

Besides the unbelievable explosions and <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/game-of-thrones-deaths-2016-7">shocking deaths</a>, one in particular came from the unlikely pairing of <span>Daenerys Targaryen and Yara Greyjoy.</span></p><p><span>In the same episode that featured the Battle of the Bastards, Dany and Yara met for the first time and bonded quite quickly. And with one epic handshake that came with a lot of sexual tension, fans began <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/game-of-thrones-daenerys-targraryen-and-yara-greyjoy-2016-6">pairing the two characters</a>, hoping they'd get together soon.</span></p><p><span>The actress who plays Yara, <span>Gemma Whelan, <a href="http://www.vulture.com/2016/07/gemma-whelan-yara-sexuality-game-of-thrones.html">spoke to Vulture</a> about the character's sexuality and the unlikely romance. Whelan said she wasn't surprised about the episode-seven reveal that her character is gay or bisexual because of Yara's up-for-anything attitude. </span></span></p><p><span><span>The obvious flirtation between Dany and Yara was also apparently not exactly spelled out in the script, she said.</span></span></p><p><span><span>"<span>It just turned out that Emilia [Clarke, who plays <span>Daenerys</span>] and I had some chemistry going on! It was probably intended in the script, but it didn't need writing down because it was so well-written," Whelan told Vulture. "W<span>e get the cut of each other's jib quite quickly, and we like the size of each other - what we have to say, what we both stand for, is appealing. Not necessarily in a sexual way, but in the way that power is attractive, and it's something we both want to achieve, and we can do it together."</span></span></span></span></p><p><span><span><span><span>Will there be more? If it was left up to Whelan and Clarke, then yes. Whelan said they both "enjoy the idea" because of how well the two get along. </span></span></span></span></p><p><span><span><span><span>So the Dany-Yara shippers might get their wishes granted. 'Game of Thrones' actress says this flirtatious moment wasn't written in the script

Why was that normal?'"</li><li>Van Houten says that she is now "very aware of the male gaze," and that she won't be doing any more nude scenes: "My consciousness is bigger. I'm a bit more woke."</li><li>Van Houten also told Insider that she never actually submitted herself for an Emmy nomination despite reports, and wishes she took "that f-----g necklace" from the "Game of Thrones" set.</li><li><a href="https://www.insider.com/?hprecirc-bullet">Visit Insider's homepage for more stories</a>.</li></ul><p>Melisandre actress Carice Van Houten told Insider that she now questions her nude scenes in <a href="https://www.insider.com/category/game-of-thrones">"Game of Thrones"</a> because of the <keyword id="3383101" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Me-Too">Me Too</keyword> Movement.</p><p>Insider spoke to the Red Witch via Zoom in lockdown, which Van Houten is spending with her three-year-old son in Amsterdam. And Van Houten said that while her opinion on the divisive final season of the HBO show hasn't changed  — she loved it — she has rethought the necessity of the nudity in the show.</p><p>"When the Me Too movement started, that's when it started sinking in for me," Van Houten told Insider. "And it did sort of change my perspective on my whole career, not just 'Game of Thrones.'"</p><p>"In retrospect, I thought, 'Why did that scene have to be nude? Why was that normal?' I did question things and it was not so much that I was blaming anyone, but that's just how we evolved, and just how the movement affected me.</p><p>"I became very aware of the male gaze, and that's also why, during that process, me and my friend Halina Reijn [director] made 'Instinct,' very much inspired by that."</p><p><div type="image" title="Carice Van Houten Melisandre in bath" height="900" width="1600" msid="75742582" hostid="261"></div></p><p>"Instinct," a terrific movie that was the Netherlands' submission for best international feature film at last year's Oscars and sadly didn't make it into the final nominees, follows a psychologist who becomes infatuated with one of her patients: a sex offender in a penal institute. Marwen Kenzari (Jafar in "Aladdin") plays the offender.</p><p>The movie is the first product of Van Houten and Reign's joint production company Man Up, which will focus on female-orientated movies and films told from female perspectives by women in film.</p><p>"We sort of made it into a dogma where we are done with that [nudity]. We don't need to show nudity to create intimacy, we don't need to see breasts," Van Houten said.</p><p>"I was always very liberal and I defended nudity because I thought, 'Why can you have a machine gun and not see a nipple?' I thought it was so weird."</p><p>In "Game of Thrones," Van Houten is one of several actresses who had numeral nude scenes, along with Lena Headey (Cersei) and Emilia Clarke (Daenerys), and critics of the show have labelled the nudity as <a href="https://www.telegraph.co.uk/tv/0/game-thrones-nudity-emilia-clarke/">"gratuitous."</a></p><p>However, <a href="https://www.insider.com/game-of-thrones-emilia-clarke-nudity-sex-2017-11">Clarke has previously defended the show's</a> depiction of nudity and sex, arguing that "people f--- for pleasure, it's part of life." Season seven (and eight) did have <a href="https://www.insider.com/game-of-thrones-nudity-dropped-a-lot-in-season-7-2017-9">a noticeable drop in nudity</a>, although that is likely due to how the story and its characters unfolded rather than any direct reaction to past criticism.</p><p>Van Houten makes it clear that she maintains that art shouldn't shy away from nudity or explicit scenes of a sexual nature. However, the Me Too movement has refined her viewpoint, and she now insists that any nudity must have a narrative function, which the nude scenes in "Game of Thrones" may not have had. She is done with nudity for herself, however: "I've done that enough now. No more."</p><p>Van Houten says this change of thought process is "me confronting my own feeling of 'that's what the audience wants' and not feeling confident to say, 'Wait a minute, why would I have to do that?' It's just our conditioned behaviour as females, and not thinking about what that means.</p><p>"My consciousness is bigger. I'm a bit more woke."</p><p><div type="image" title="Carice Van Houten and Liam Cunningham" height="1200" width="1600" msid="75742587" hostid="261"></div></p><p>Van Houten also revealed that <a href="https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/race/emmys-three-nominated-game-thrones-stars-submitted-hbo-did-not-enter-them-1224887">despite reports</a> last year, she never actually submitted herself at the <keyword id="199972" type="ENTERTAINMENT" weightage="60" keywordseo="Emmys">Emmys</keyword>.</p><p>"I would never, ever do that. I didn't even think about it. I don't even know when the Emmys are," Van Houten laughed.</p><p>"A journalist from <a href="https://www.goldderby.com/article/2019/carice-van-houten-game-of-thrones-melisandre-emmy-drama-guest-actress/">Gold Derby wrote an article</a> [arguing for Van Houten to be considered for an award], and that was picked up by my agent, and then they had a conversation with other teams where they said 'why is she not nominated?' And then it was decided to bring me forward to the commission, and I was put on that shortlist to be nominated or not. There's a lot of misunderstanding about that [submitting herself]."</p><p>Van Houten, who said being nominated for an Emmy was "f------ cool," told Insider that, that was a good way to end her "Game of Thrones" journey, and would have been a nice physical keepsake to remember the show other than the only thing she kept from the set: thermal underwear.</p><p>"Liam Cunningham [Davos], as he says himself, liberated a lot of things. He's just a thief," Van Houten joked. "He has all sorts of things, cups and daggers. And now I'm like, 'Why didn't I keep that f-----g necklace?' For that, he was banished from the Iron Islands, the land ruled over by his family and specifically his older bother Balon.</p><p>His casting means that the Kingsmoot may be ahead. A Kingsmoot is a captains' vote to choose the king of the region. If a Kingsmoot is going down, then that means <a href="http://tvnewsroom.org/newslines/entertainment/game-of-thrones-season-6-spoilers-casting-location-leaks-confirm-certain-113500/" target="_blank">Balon is dead</a>. And if the show goes the way of the books, Euron is chosen to rule after he promises to bring down their enemies with dragons.
