Two feisty cricketers who love to get in the face of the opposition to get the best out of themselves. <keyword id="19914485" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="gautam-gambhir" source="keywords">Gautam Gambhir</keyword> and <keyword id="19907934" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="virat-kohli" source="keywords">Virat Kohli</keyword> were not expected to have a smooth relationship when the former was roped in as India's head coach. But the two have decided to take the spice out of the chatter surrounding them by sharing a laugh and some thoughts on their aggressive personalities, love for Test cricket and similar aspirations growing up. "Here we are putting an end to all the masala and spice," said <keyword id="19899436" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Kohli" source="keywords">Kohli</keyword> as he interviewed head coach <keyword id="19929078" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Gambhir" source="keywords">Gambhir</keyword> for <keyword id="19901245" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="BCCI" source="keywords">bcci</keyword>.tv ahead of the first Test against Bangladesh here. "That is a good start to the conversation," the southpaw said in response. Gambhir played with an aggressive mindset all through his career and Kohli continues to play the game with the intensity of a teenager. Considering that, their on-field confrontations in the IPL over the years were hardly a surprise. In the insightful chat, the two strong personalities looked back at their days in Delhi and <keyword id="20020884" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Indian-cricket" source="keywords">Indian cricket</keyword>. The conversation flowed after they watched footage of the 2011 World Cup final where Gambhir played a match-winning knock and shared an 83-run stand with his younger teammate Kohli. "We have come a long way. From playing together for a long time, being part of the same dressing to having ups and downs," said Kohli before Gambhir added that everything that happened between them was in "good spirits". One could gauge their similar mindset with the way they talked about Test cricket. Gambhir began his India career when there was no IPL and always aspired to be a successful red-ball cricketer. Kohli, on the other hand, is arguably the most high profile supporter of Test cricket. "Test cricket is the pinnacle of the game. I made my ODI debut before playing Tests. Making Test debut remains my best memory till date. We always thought we would be judged by what we do in red-ball cricket," recollected Gambhir. The 42-year-old opener, being five years older to Kohli, had established himself when the latter burst on the scene. Kohli still vividly remembers the days when he aspired to be in the league of Gambhir and other big names of Delhi cricket. "There used to be Kotla 1 and Kotla 2 (nets). We always wanted to be there (with the likes of Gambhir and Co). My first aspiration was to play first class cricket for Delhi. Now you can understand where the competition comes from because the perspective (his and Gambhir's) is very similar," said the most successful Indian Test captain. For Gambhir, Kohli is the torch-bearer of Test cricket. "You guys are the torchbearers of Test cricket. In today's day and age the challenge will always remain, how we can motivate the next generation of cricketers. I believe the stronger your Test team, the stronger your cricket," said the former opener and Kohli could not agree more with him. India needs next generation of bowlers ========================= Both Gambhir and Kohli also agreed that India will have to find the next generation of pacers and spinners to extend their successful run in the longest format. As captain, Kohli had placed emphasis on playing five specialist bowlers, a strategy that paid rich dividends. "A lot will depend on the next generation of bowlers. We will keep producing quality batters. That is how the structure has been," said Gambhir. "But does the younger generation have motivation to bowl 20 overs in a day? Someone like <keyword id="19899525" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="jasprit-bumrah" source="keywords">Jasprit Bumrah</keyword>, he just loves to bowl but do the next generation of fast bowlers find enjoyment in bowling 20 overs in a day, even the spinners? "If you enjoy doing that, that is the only way one would be motivated to play Tests. That is going to be a challenge for all of us to figure out who these guys are," said the coach. Kohli reserved his last question for Gambhir's umpteen run-ins with opposition bowlers. However, he was quickly reminded about his own on field demeanour. "You had more altercations. Maybe you can answer this better," said Gambhir (laughs). "That is what the personality I had and that is the personality you have. At times that conversation can get you in the zone. I don't want the current players to change one bit," added the head coach. Putting an end to spicy chatter: Kohli, Gambhir bond over love for Tests, need for aggression

Gautam Gambhir appointed as Indian team head coach

Ravichandran <keyword id="20035994" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Ashwin" source="keywords">Ashwin</keyword> doesn't like "latching on to people" and that's one reason why he has never warmed up to the idea of banking on <keyword id="20134692" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="coaches" source="keywords">coaches</keyword> in the traditional sense as he believes that such <keyword id="20902120" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="dependence" source="keywords">dependence</keyword> makes players dogmatic. In his 14-year international <keyword id="19919646" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="cricket" source="keywords">cricket</keyword> career, spanning 281 games and 744 wickets across formats, Ashwin's sense of agency and his ability to time and again rediscover himself, have helped him survive the grind. "A lot of players are heavily dependent on coaches or mentors, or one person which I think is a very dangerous trend because latching on to people and over-dependency can cause you to not be able to open to new ideas," the 37-year-old off-spinner told PTI in a telephonic interview recently. It is not that Ashwin never had a sounding board. His first state team coach WV Raman, one of the respected names in Indian cricket, and Tamil Nadu legend and former India batter S Badrinath, have been guiding forces for him. But his equation with them never turned into the kind of dependence that would take away his own ability to search for solutions. "See very often the challenge of a coach is to be able to offer you several solutions. This is because what works for one (particular player) might not work for the other," he explained. "One modern-day coaching philosophy which I totally disagree with is the fact that they try to copy-paste the same technique (solution) that's worked for another cricketer," Ashwin, who recently made his debut as an author with 'I Have The Streets: A Kutti Cricket Story', added. While he is completely aware that some players get results by surrendering to the vision of their coaches, he also feels that such dependence can lead to a closed mind. "Because as a cricketer, you constantly are thrown up with new challenges, so you must be able to find your own answers," the tweaker, who is behind only the legendary Anil Kumble in the list of India's highest Test wicket-takers, pointed out. To Ashwin, Raman has been that catalyst, who helped him focus his intuitive mind. "People can give you a helping hand. But they cannot guide you through in your career, you will have to be open to fresh ideas. "For me, WV allowed me the freedom to express, and, you know, try new things. He also taught me how and on what path I need to travel, but he never said, 'This is the path you need to travel upon'. "So in a way, in my early days, guidance from WV ensured that I was never really over-reliant on anybody." Ashwin said getting a second opinion is never a bad idea but cricket primarily is a self-taught sport. "If you don't have awareness of your own game and if you can't teach yourself, I think you are always going to be dependent on someone which I think is a very dangerous part. "I am not saying people with coaches or people who are dependent don't do well in life but there is a chance of selling yourself short," he asserted. He is gearing up for a big 10-Test season and the Bangladesh series next month will be his first under new head coach <keyword id="19914485" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Gautam-Gambhir" source="keywords">Gautam Gambhir</keyword>, someone with whom he has also played a lot. Ashwin also admires him as one of the "heroes" of Indian cricket. "Gautam is someone I still share a very, very good relationship with. Because of the fact that he is a very straightforward and an honest guy. "I think Gautam is also one of those guys that we should always be backing. He's a hero of Indian cricket," he said of the new coach, who took charge in the recent tour of Sri Lanka. It took me 2-3 years to perfect 'Carrom Ball' ============================= The best in the world have struggled to read his signature 'carrom ball' but Ashwin, who first saw Ajantha Mendis bowl it during an age-group camp in Chennai, said that it took him nearly three years before he was satisfied with its execution. For the uninitiated, a carrom ball is a delivery which turns the other way and is released with a flick of the middle finger. In case of a right hander, it will turn away from the bat. "I started bowling those balls in the nets 2006 or 2007 onwards, which was probably the second season for me in first-class cricket. "It took me a good two years before I implemented it in the south zone leg matches of the Vijay Hazare Trophy (KS Subbaiah Pillai Trophy) in 2008. By 2010, I was probably pretty confident about the pace at which I bowled. "So, it took about two to three years for me to gain confidence." Priority should always be playing for India ============================ The IPL has changed the lives of young Indian cricketers and has been "tremendous" for country's cricketing ecosystem but Ashwin believes that for an aspiring cricketer, the ultimate goal should forever be playing for the country. "I am very glad that a lot of young kids are coming now and making a good amount of money. It is changing their livelihood, changing the status of their families. It's unbelievable for India, for the Indian cricketing ecosystem," he said. "But I still feel there must be some incentive and some motivation for all these kids to want to play for India, and that's absolutely in the hands of the stakeholders and the decision makers."

Over-reliance on coaches can stop players from finding own solutions: Ashwin

India and Karnataka bowler Vinay Kumar was also reported to be in contention to replace Mhambrey as team India's bowling coach. But Morkel has been appointed ahead of him. Morkel has previously worked with Gambhir during his time in the Indian Premier League (IPL) with Lucknow Super Giants. Morkel also served as the bowling coach of India's arch-rival Pakistan. He was appointed in June 2023 and left after the conclusion of the ODI World Cup in November last year. But he left six weeks before his contract was meant to expire. During his playing days, the 39-year-old was one of the tearaways in South Africa's star-studded pace bowling line-up. He made 86 Test appearances for the Proteas and claimed 309 wickets at an average of 27.7. In the ODI format, Morkel played 117 matches and scythed 188 wickets at an average of 25.3. In the shortest format of the sport, he made 44 appearances and claimed 47 scalps to his name at an average of 25.3. The elements of the boot-camp was specially customised to challenge the players both physically and mentally. The multi-faceted adventures included spending the first night in Saanen, a picturesque village in the Bernese Oberland region of Switzerland. The second day involved a combination of cycling to Rougemont, a cable car ride, and tackling a via ferrata-a protected climbing route. This mix of activities was aimed at testing the team's endurance and teamwork. The day concluded with a cycle to Rossiniere, where the team enjoyed traditional raclette, a traditional Swiss dish on cheese base while spending the night in a rustic farm setting, sleeping in hay at his friend's farm. On the final day, the group remained in the area and engaged in rappelling down waterfalls, a thrilling activity that capped off the boot-camp. These activities were not only physical challenges but also served as exercises in "mental resilience, teamwork, and trust." "Throughout the boot-camp, the team showed remarkable growth. Their determination and adaptability were inspiring, and it was gratifying to see how the camp helped them develop, both individually and as a cohesive unit. This mutual exchange of learning and growth is what makes these boot-camps so special." The most successful team in India' Olympic hockey history, the current men's team have 12 medals, including eight gold but they had to wait for 41 years for their last medal, a bronze which came at Tokyo three years ago. "Given the high expectations for the team, especially as bronze medal winners at the Tokyo Games, my advice to them was to focus on their strengths and stay mentally resilient," Horn said. "Overall, my advice centered on mental toughness, team cohesion, and embracing the moment, which are crucial for navigating the challenges of a high-stakes tournament like the Olympics," he added. He recalled his experiences of working with Gautam Gambhir-led KKR. "During the Kolkata Knight Riders' title win, these principles were crucial. Conquering big moments required mental strength and composure under pressure. We broke down challenges into manageable parts, maintained a positive environment, and reinforced the belief that each player's role was vital." Citing examples from his own life, Horn told players that for them, failure means losing a medal but for him, failure could lead to potential loss of life. "Drawing from my life as an explorer, I often tell the players that failure for me means not just losing a game, but potentially losing my life. This perspective instills a heightened sense of urgency and focus. "Sometimes, adopting a mindset where failure is not an option can be a powerful motivator, driving the team to give their absolute best as if everything depends on it. This intensity and commitment are often what it takes to achieve victory," he signed off.

Across many IPL seasons, I noted your desire to win, your assistance to younger players and your drive to extract the best out of your team on the field. "I know how dedicated and passionate you are about Indian cricket and I am sure you will bring all these qualities into the new job," he said. The 51-year-old, however, offered a word of caution to his one-time teammate about living under constant scrutiny. "As you know, the expectations will be high and the scrutiny will be intense," he said, also reminding that there will be overwhelming support for him from all quarters.
