The Covid pandemic might have battered the cinema exhibition industry's core business but it has also accelerated diversification, <keyword id="799" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="pvr" source="Orion">PVR</keyword>'s Chief Executive <keyword id="9154" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="gautam-dutta" source="Orion">Gautam Dutta</keyword> said. In a conversation with IANS, Dutta said the pandemic has given a push to diversify the business and fully utilise available resources. "We have forayed into new segments such as packaged F&amp;B (PVR popcorn) and now 'V-Pristine'. The pandemic gave us time and the necessity to plan for these new ventures," he said. "There are other new initiatives as well that we plan to launch in the near future. These new products will cater to the growing demand for differentiated and specialised services like 'V-Pristine'." Recently, PVR forayed into customised cleaning and disinfecting solutions for commercial and residential segments under its new business vertical 'V-Pristine'. At present, 'V-Pristine' is available in Delhi-NCR with more than 1,000 residences and offices across 46 cities covered in the first phase of trials covering six months. Besides, the company has tied-up with Reliance Industries' retail subsidiary for starting <keyword id="3658" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="india" source="Orion">India</keyword>'s first ever open-air rooftop theatre -- Jio Drive-in -- at the premium shopping mall, Jio World Drive (<keyword id="12452736" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="jwd" source="Orion">JWD</keyword>) in Mumbai. The drive-in theatre will be operated by PVR and would have capacity for 290 cars and boasts of the biggest cinema screen in town. Additionally, the company has collaborated with Esports company <keyword id="3492146" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="nodwin-gaming" source="Orion">NODWIN Gaming</keyword> to launch India's first "In-Cinema Esports" live tournaments. On the company's core business, Dutta said that pent-up demand, along with new content, has drawn in moviegoers, thereby accelerating the recovery. The sector, formally known as 'cinema exhibition industry', has been one of the hardest hit due to the Covid-19 pandemic, causing revenue and employment loss. Till recently, cinemas and multiplexes in many states remained in the list of prohibited activities to curb the spread of the pandemic. However, accelerated pace of vaccination as well as easing Covid restrictions and lower transmission rates have turned the tide for the sector. Besides, new local, global and regional content have once again lured many moviegoers back from online streaming platforms to theatres. "Rising vaccination levels, lower infection rate and release of big-ticket movies has brought back moviegoers." "With lesser to no capacity restrictions, we believe that pre-pandemic levels will be achieved within the next few months." However, he cautioned that the growth will be stalled if another Covid wave hits the country. Furthermore, Dutta pointed out that festive season as well as healthy line-up of movie releases will surely boost the footfall levels at the company's properties. "This year we have new content coming in from international, domestic and regional studios." "Some markets in the north and in the South India region are close to reaching their pre-pandemic levels." Currently, PVR is the largest film exhibition company in India. It operates a cinema circuit comprising of 856 screens at 179 properties in 72 cities in India and Sri Lanka. COVID-19 pandemic accelerates PVR's business diversification, says PVR's Chief Executive

India’s largest multiplex chain <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/You-can-buy-a-PVR-movie-ticket-on-Paytm-now/articleshow/51494335.cms">PVR</a> Cinemas is all set to launch 10 Virtual Reality (VR) lounges worth Rs 15 crore across some of its properties spread countrywide. 
 
The first such lounge was launched in Noida, and similar lounges will come up in Mumbai, Delhi and a couple of South Indian cities in next six to eight months. 
 In these VR lounges, <keyword id="406134" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="movie-buffs">movie buffs</keyword> will get to experience a new dimension of entertainment before the film begins. 
 
"We track our consumers' journey across properties and are always on the lookout for what more we can offer them. This idea of <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/tech/we-just-got-the-first-real-look-into-how-well-virtual-reality-is-selling/articleshow/57379295.cms">VR</a> lounge came last year and we partnered with HP for the latest ground-breaking technology," said <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/Know-why-PVRs-stocks-are-enjoying-their-showtime/articleshow/48050084.cms">PVR</a> CEO <keyword id="9154" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Gautam-Dutta">Gautam Dutta</keyword>. 
 
Dutta added that it would cost about Rs 1.5 crore per lounge on an average, owing to average per seat cost being Rs 25 lakh, and all lounges having 4-12 seats.

Ten virtual reality lounges to be launched by PVR

It was in May last year that the makers of <keyword id="8402" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Azhar">Azhar</keyword>, the biopic on cricketer <keyword id="6463421" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Mohammad-Azharuddin">Mohammad Azharuddin</keyword>, had unveiled the teaser of the look, along with the first look of <keyword id="1684" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Emraan-Hashmi">Emraan Hashmi</keyword> playing the titular role. 
 
Ever since then, barring a few updates here and a few appearances there, this movie has been pretty much unheard of, but now that the release date is nearing, the makers have decided to take on the promotions in full swing, and how. 
 Yesterday, the official Twitter handle of the movie unveiled the first look of two characters from the movie. While one was that of cricketer-turned-commentator Ravi Shastri, played by Bigg Boss fame <keyword id="272039" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Gautam-Gulati">Gautam Gulati</keyword>, the other one is that of Meera, the lawyer fighting the case against Azhar, played by <keyword id="1037" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Lara-Dutta">Lara Dutta</keyword>.

Lara Dutta is reported to have lived this character even off-screen, talking as a lawyer even as the camera wasn’t rolling. For the preparation of this role, Lara studied the whole case history and took help from one of her lawyer friends to observe the way lawyers speak. 
 
The movie is highly awaited, one because we haven’t seen Hashmi on the screen in the longest time, and two, because it would tell us the story of what went wrong with the star cricketer who was banned from playing the sport he loved and lived.

Not even in the hay days, when movies were a key source of entertainment. Now, at a time when theaters are struggling with occupancies and footfalls, India’s largest multiplex chain has brought out its PVR INOX Passport. For ₹699, consumers can watch 10 movies in a month on weekdays but without access to its IMAX, Gold, LUXE and Director's Cut services. Even as the movie industry saw post-pandemic successes with RRR, Pathan, <keyword id="6498265" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="pushpa" source="Orion">Pushpa</keyword> and Rocky and Rani Ki Prem Kahani, occupancies haven’t yet hit pre-Covid levels. Now, PVR is hopeful that with this limited period offer, they can bring back some of those who have lost the habit of watching movies on the screen. “The three significant target groups we are focusing on are students, housewives, and senior citizens, where we believe lies a great opportunity. We expect this innovative offering will not only revitalize weekday cinema attendance but also introduce a new dimension to how our patrons interact with and enjoy the world of cinema,” said Gautam Dutta, co-CEO of PVR INOX. The big screens are being hurt by OTT’s weekly and monthly launches of shows and direct-to-OTT movies. Moreover, GenZs with mobiles and easy data access, find little allure of watching movies in a size larger than life. Unlimited OTTs plus limited theatrical releases PVR is trying to build a habit of making movie watching a social outing that it has been for generations before. OTTs have also upped their ante during the pandemic and has brought back movie loving public into its fold. The time lag between a theatrical release and their satellite/OTT debuts have come down drastically. In some cases, it’s a matter of a few weeks. Added to that, a few superstar-starring, much awaited movies are going directly to OTTs. Case in point – Knives Out ‘Glass Onion’ starring Daniel Craig had a ‘limited’ release before it hit Netflix. Even Martin Scorsese planned the same for his ‘Killers of the Flower Moon’ but canceled it. There are more examples closer home too. One of Bollywood’s most-awaited debuts with three star kids directed by Zoya Akhtar is The Archies. The off-beat movie starring Shah Rukh Khan’s daughter Suhana Khan, Amitabh Bachchan’s grandson Agastya Nanda, and late actress Sridevi’s daughter Khushi Kapoor, is coming to Netflix. More reason for the young to subscribe to Netflix and chill, instead of making a movie date. “This move may eventually bring the youth back to the cinemas, which will be a big positive structural trigger. The only ponderable is if lower pricing or good content would be the decider to usher in this change,” says Karan Taurani, research analyst at Elara Capital in a note on the offer. Without the price-barrier If there ever was a good way to bring back young people to try something, price reduction is the way to go. Many apps and new-age businesses are built on this theory. PVR’s Passport plan however does zero or no damage to their economics. As per Elara’s calculations, pan-India, annual average occupancy for exhibitors for weekdays (Monday-Thursday) is around 17%. Discounted ticket prices may prop occupancy towards 20-25% it believes. “Increased occupancy may not come at any incremental costs and may drive better F&amp;B and ad revenue which is high-margin in nature,” Taurani adds. The Passport offer which is not available in the South of India, is also limited in nature. Only 20,000 of these passes are available. The idea behind it is not merely to boost weekday occupancy, claims PVR. “With the Passport, we have sought to break the barriers of cost and allow our newer audiences to immerse themselves in a wide array of movies across diverse genres. We expect this innovative offering will not only revitalize weekday cinema attendance but also introduce a new dimension to how our patrons interact with and enjoy the world of cinema,” said Dutta. Small vs Big Apart from limited releases, a lot of quaint small movies, whose surprise performance vitalized box offices are also missing. These are the movies that are being swept off by OTTs and as per media reports, producers and distributors are also getting <a href="https://economictimes.indiatimes.com/industry/media/entertainment/studios-fail-to-talk-up-movies-theatres-pay-the-price/articleshow/104897753.cms">tight-fisted with marketing spends</a>. Taurani says that theaters’ dependence on large-budget films increased to around 85% in Hindi <keyword id="25892" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="box-office" source="Orion">Box Office</keyword> (BO) which is a structural risk. If there is an option to watch ‘many movies’ with a prepaid option, the small movies which are hitherto undiscovered can get a boost. “It's about making every visit to the cinema an opportunity to discover something new, to be entertained, and to be captivated by the magic of storytelling on the big screen, even with the smaller films,” said Dutta. Be it big or small, a movie on a big screen is always an experience. Whether the younger generation who is reportedly more keen on experiences than anything will subscribe to it, is yet to be seen. PVR woos Netflix n Chill crowd back to big screens with its Passport

<ul><li>Iconic romantic films including DDLJ, Tamasha, Titanic 3D version and Jab We Met were re-released during Valentine’s week. </li><li>For chains like PVR, reruns have been an important part of their campaign to bring India back to the theatres. </li><li>Analyst Karan Taurani believes reruns are not powerful enough to impact collections or drive theatre occupancy and indicates lack of fresh Bollywood content. </li><li>Indian film critic Sucharita Tyagi states reruns of classics are helping build film communities, drive theatre occupancy and celebrate cinema. </li></ul>Theatre audiences in one of the PVR’s in Punjab were seen dancing to the groovy beats of ‘Mauja hi mauja’, a song from Shahid Kapoor and Kareena Kapoor Khan-starrer Jab We Met, rereleased in theatres almost two decades after its original release. Kapoor called it ‘too special’ on Twitter. But is the business of nostalgia strong enough to mint money at the box office? Several iconic romantic films including – Shah Rukh Khan (SRK)-Kajol-starrer Dilwale Dulhania Le Jaayenge (DDLJ), Ranbir Kapoor-Deepika Padukone’s Tamasha, James Cameron’s Titanic in 3D and Jab We Met – were released across PVR, Inox and Cinepolis theatres during Valentine’s week this February. Even though DDLJ remains the longest-running film in Indian cinema and is immensely popular with multiple reruns, it found tough competition this Valentine’s week from the Jab We Met rerun. “Jab We Met has now started beating DDLJ in PVR. Jab We Met collected ₹2 lakh on Friday. The collections then jumped to approximately ₹5 lakh on Saturday while the collections on Sunday were ₹6 lakh. On Monday, while DDLJ collected ₹6 lakh, Jab We Met collected ₹6.5 lakh in the multiplex chain,” reported<a href="https://www.bollywoodhungama.com/news/features/jab-mets-re-release-springs-surprise-collects-monday-sunday-also-beats-dilwale-dulhania-le-jayenge-pvr/"> Bollywood Hungama</a>. Rerun campaigns for boosting footfalls PVR Oberoi Mall in Goregaon, Mumbai decided to play six shows of Jab We Met on Valentine’s day. Tamasha had 150 shows with 50% audience occupancy and Titanic 3D version rerun had 1,000 shows, with 60% occupancy, PVR told Business Insider India. The PVR’S Valentine Week Film Festival (10th-16th February 2023) also re-released other romantic titles across languages – Ticket to Paradise (English), Ved (Marathi), Geetha Govindam (Telugu), Vinnaithaandi Varuvaayaa (Tamil), Hridayam (Malayalam), Googly (Kannada) and Love Ni Bhavai (Gujarati). “Screened across 25 cities in India, Jab We Met, DDLJ, Tamasha, Vinnaithaandi Varuvaayaa and Titanic especially received good response, recording average occupancy of 50-70%. Shows of Jab We Met had to be increased to meet the increased demand,” Gautam Dutta, CEO, PVR, told Business Insider India. PVR aims to continue with their rerun campaigns in the future, given the power nostalgia wields on millennials and even GenZs, Dutta added. For chains like PVR, reruns have been an important part of their campaign to boost theatre occupancy – be it re-releasing 11 films starring Amitabh Bachchan on his 80th birthday or the ‘Dilip Kumar Hero of Heroes’ campaign celebrating his 100th birth anniversary. The release of DDLJ during SRK’s birthday last year collected ₹23.4 lakh, claiming 60% occupancy then. “When you watch Jab We Met, you also watch it with 300 people who are die-hard fans of that film. Witnessing this celebration is pure joy. You know the punchlines, where to laugh, where to cry. Props to the Film Federation of India for bringing these classics back. They are also driving theatre occupancy,” Sucharita Tyagi, an Indian film critic told Business Insider India. Many movies like DDLJ, Tamasha, Jab We Met are already available on OTTs yet cinephiles are flocking to theatres in hoards. An Ormax report states the Indian theatre audience has lost <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/business/news/indian-film-industry-lost-24-million-moviegoers-to-the-pandemic-ormax/articleshow/97918537.cms">24 million</a> moviegoers to the pandemic. This is accentuated by low impact of small and medium-budget films and availability of OTT platforms. The OTT audience in India has grown 20% in 2022 with 424 million active users. Yet, it looks like the big screen has its pull. “We are seeing films like Deewar in theatres, which was released when we weren’t even born. It is a novelty experience. Reruns boost film communities. The Priyanka Chopra led Jio-MAMI festival is also bringing physical screenings back. It is a good time for cinema I believe,” added Tyagi. Impact on collections: minuscule Reruns may boost film communities, but will they be able to revive flagging footfalls and lift box office collections? Karan Taurani, analyst at Elara Capital, believes reruns are not powerful enough to impact collections or drive theatre occupancy. They are rather indicative of fresh Bollywood content. Also, reruns have limitations in their reach. For instance, a Jab We Met will rake in more numbers in Punjab or Delhi as compared to South Indian cities like Chennai. “Reruns are happening because Pathaan has seen a strong run in the last two and a half weeks. Little to no fresh content is being offered, which is why these films are being re-released. The number of Hindi films released every quarter have come down 25-30%, from over 20 films every quarter pre-pandemic to less than 14 films now. There is greater reliance on big-budget films,” Taurani told Business Insider India. SRK-Deepika Padukone-starrer Pathaan crossed ₹500 crore in India in 20 days, contributing 46% to <a href="https://www.ormaxmedia.com/insights/stories/the-india-box-office-report-january-2023.html?s=08">January’s India box office</a> collections. Films released in January 2023 grossed ₹1,389 crore at the domestic box office, the highest since April 2022, as per <a href="https://www.ormaxmedia.com/insights/stories/the-india-box-office-report-january-2023.html?s=08">Ormax report.</a> A caveat – only six films managed to cross the ₹10 crore mark, indicating greater reliance on big-budget movies like Pathaan. “The impact of reruns is very minuscule. Collection is low because these are consumed more in terms of single screens where ticket prices are low. I don’t foresee a large number of people going to multiplexes for these films as ticket prices are 3-4 times higher,” added Taurani. But Tyagi states these movies are helping India come back to the theatres, although she too wishes the ticket prices of these movies were cheaper. “I cannot say if these movies are being used as fillers before the big releases but I am glad India is coming back to the theatres. I wish the ticket prices and snacks at concession stands were cheaper at theatres to make movie watching a more affordable experience,” added Tyagi. Reruns may not be too successful at raking in the moolah at the box office but what they surely do is revive the currency of nostalgia – allowing the audience to relive the past while providing theatre chains a respite from falling audience footfalls.

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Slow growth and too much tightening from the Fed will frustrate markets and the economy, BlackRock says. </li><li>"Still, we do think that markets, and consequently the economy, will become 'Fed up' with too much tightening," according to a note.</li></ul>Financial markets may stop tolerating the Federal Reserve's tightening cycle while rate hikes work their way through the economy, a note from BlackRock said Thursday.The coming months will be key to assessing how the real economy reacts to the Fed, said Rick Rieder, BlackRock's chief investment officer of global fixed income.But the typical lag between a strong change in monetary policy and effects on the economy will be longer than usual as fiscal stimulus continues to have an impact, he said. For now, the Fed will keep hiking rates based on the economic data that comes in."Still, we do think that markets, and consequently the economy, will become 'Fed up' with too much tightening, if growth (and employment) are tangibly slowing alongside of these tighter policy moves," Rieder warned.The Federal Reserve essentially met investor expectations this past week with a third straight 75-basis-point increase to bring the fed funds rate to 3%-3.25%.That followed hikes of 25 and 50 basis points earlier this year, while policymakers on Wednesday also signaled further increases will eventually bring benchmark rates to nearly 5% by next year. The Fed's pace of rate hikes and its pivot from quantitative easing to quantitative tightening show "an impressive resolve and a commitment rarely seen at the central bank since the days of Chairman Paul Volcker," Rieder noted.In fact, Fed Chair Jerome Powell's drive to bring inflation back down to a 2% target has drawn other comparisons to Volcker <a href="https://www.cnn.com/2022/09/21/business/nightcap-fed-powell-volcker-inflation/index.html">in recent days</a>. He notoriously hiked interest rates as high as 20% during the Reagan administration and spurred two market crashes as a result.That fear has essentially now become reality on Wall Street, which has all but abandoned hopes of a dovish pivot from the Powell-led central bank in the near future. "After two decades of being hyper-focused on its growth mandate (at the expense of inflation risks), the tables are turned, with the Fed now pursuing inflation at the expense of growth," said Gautam Khanna, head of US multi Sector fixed income at Insight Investment. And Powell is showing signs that this Fed is willing to take the residual effects in stride as rates move higher, seemingly accepting the Volcker-esque roll with a laser focus on inflation. "'Don't fight the Fed' is the phrase du jour, and with no pivot in sight, does that mean something has to break before inflation breaks?" said Jamie Dutta, market analyst at Vantage. But Rieder estimates that eventually both financial markets and the economy will have had enough of the tightening cycle, especially if growth significantly slows. "Is the economy there yet? No, not yet, but investors are clearly watching every economic and corporate report and survey to see where inflection points are presenting themselves (including global conditions)," he said.

On Saturday, the state’s Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray announced the reopening of theatres in the state bringing a relief to the theatre industry. In fact, shares of PVR, Inox Leisure rallied on stock exchanges on Monday as investors showed their excitement of theatres reopening. The much awaited Ranveer Singh’s sports drama movie ‘83’ will be screened on Christmas this year in theatres. Another sports movie ‘Jersey’ starring Shahid Kapoor will release on December 31, 2021. New Delhi, Mar 14 () Film exhibitor PVR Cinemas on Saturday said it has received licences to operate four new screens at Indore in Madhya Pradesh. The company is opening the new screens at PVR Treasure Island Mall in Indore, a statement said. The now nine-screen property will introduce two mainstream and two special formats - PVR PlayHouse and PVR 4DX in the existing five-screen cinema, it added. The company mentioned that due to recent Madhya Pradesh government order on temporary closure of cinemas as a precautionary measure to avoid spread of COVID19, the screens will be opened as soon as the order is lifted. With this expansion, the PVR has augmented its screen count in Western Region to 258 screens across 61 properties and 18 screens across four properties in Madhya Pradesh. The property can now accommodate 1,555 audiences. "We are excited to introduce two new formats for our patrons in the region. PVR PlayHouse and 4DX technology have received an exponential response from the cine lovers so far and we are hopeful that it will be a success in this market as well," PVR Cinemas CEO Gautam Dutta said. "With this, we continue to reiterate our focus on making inroads into smaller markets in India where there is significant growth potential," he stated. With these four new screens, the company has opened 87 screens in one financial year which is the highest in the industry so far, Sanjeev Kumar Bijli, Joint Managing Director, PVR Ltd said. Speaking about coronavirus scare, he said, "Currently, it is a situation wherein we first pray for the wellbeing and good health of all our customers.
