Mumbai, The rupee turned flat at 82.89 against the US dollar in early trade on Wednesday, resisting pressure amid unabated outflow of foreign funds and increased month-end demand of the American currency. At the interbank foreign exchange, the local currency opened at 82.90 and then inched up to trade at the previous day's closing level of 82.89 against the greenback. On Tuesday, the rupee settled 1 paisa lower at 82.89 against the US dollar. "Currently, <keyword id="19900043" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="fed" source="keywords">Fed</keyword> watch tool suggests that market participants are pricing rate cuts to begin no time before June, and the upcoming core <keyword id="19906790" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="pce" source="keywords">PCE</keyword> (Personal Consumption Expenditures) price index tomorrow and GDP figures today will be heavily watched for," he said, adding that the USD-INR (Spot) is expected to trade "sideways and quote in the range of 82.80-83.20". Brent crude futures, the global oil benchmark, were trading 0.49 per cent lower at USD 83.24 per barrel. On Monday, the domestic currency settled at 83.37 against the US dollar. "Yesterday, the dollar against its major crosses also traded with low volatility as market participants remain cautious ahead of the important FOMC (Federal Open Market Committee) policy statement that is scheduled to be released later this week," <keyword id="12834279" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="gaurang-somaiya" source="Orion">Gaurang Somaiya</keyword>, forex and bullion analyst at <keyword id="113829" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="motilal-oswal-financial-services" source="Orion">Motilal Oswal Financial Services</keyword>, said. On Wednesday, the rupee depreciated by 35 paise to close at 81.26 against the US dollar. US retail sales posted the biggest increase in eight months in October. Rupee falls 37 paise to close at 81.63 against US dollar

The rupee appreciated 34 paise to close at 82.47 (provisional) against the US dollar on Thursday as the greenback retreated from its elevated levels. At the interbank foreign exchange market, the local currency opened at 82.15 and witnessed a high of 82.14 and a low of 82.51. It finally settled at 82.47 against the American currency, registering a rise of 34 paise over its last close. In the previous session on Tuesday, the rupee appreciated by 7 paise to 82.81 against the dollar. The forex market was closed on Wednesday on account of Diwali Balipratipada. "Rupee rose sharply as the dollar plunged against its major crosses. Weaker-than-expected economic data from the US led to a retracement in the dollar," said <keyword id="12834279" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="gaurang-somaiya" source="Orion">Gaurang Somaiya</keyword>, Forex &amp; Bullion Analyst, Motilal Oswal Financial Services. The expectation is that the US Federal Reserve will slow the pace of its rate hiking cycle. This sent the euro back above parity with the greenback for the first time in a month, Somaiya added. Rupee rises 34 paise to close at 82.47 against US dollar

At the interbank foreign exchange, the domestic unit opened strong at 83.40 and touched the intra-day peak of 83.36 against the greenback. The local unit later traded at 83.37 against the dollar in the morning deals, registering a gain of 9 paise from its previous closing level. The rupee had settled 3 paise lower at 83.46 against the dollar on Thursday. According to Gaurang Somaiya, Forex and bullion analyst, Motilal Oswal Financial Services Ltd, the dollar was weighed down against major crosses after the US Federal Reserve kept the key interest rate unchanged for the sixth consecutive time. Also, the ongoing pressures and a tight labour market indicated a stall in progress toward bringing inflation back to its 2 per cent target this year. Analysts also said market participants are expected to keep a close watch on the US non-farm payroll data to be released on Friday. Besides, weekly unemployment claims, trade balance and factory order data from the US are likely to provide further cues. "Today, the focus will be on the non-farm payrolls data, which is expected to come in marginally lower and that could weigh on the greenback. Apart from payrolls, services PMI number is also likely to trigger volatility for the dollar. We expect USD-INR (Spot) to trade sideways and quote in a range of 83.20-83.50," Somaiya said. India's manufacturing PMI fell to 58.8 in April 2024 from 59.1 in the previous month, a monthly survey said on Thursday. The seasonally adjusted HSBC India Manufacturing Purchasing Managers' Index (PMI), however, recorded the second fastest improvement in operating conditions in three-and-a-half years supported by buoyant demand. Meanwhile, the dollar index, which gauges the greenback's strength against a basket of six currencies, declined 0.04 per cent to 105.13. On Friday, the rupee depreciated 4 paise to close at 83.40 against the US dollar. On Thursday, the rupee appreciated by 16 paise to settle at 82.56 against the US dollar, making it the third straight day of gain. Expectation is that the Fed Chairman could maintain a hawkish tone and that could extend gains for the greenback." Apart from US Federal Reserve Chairman <keyword id="1727754" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="jerome-powell" source="Orion">Jerome Powell</keyword>'s statement at the Jackson Hole Symposium, market participants will keep an eye on the US consumer sentiment index to be released on Friday. "Better-than-expected economic data is likely to support the dollar. We expect the USDINR (Spot) to trade sideways and quote in the range of 82.30 and 82.80," Somaiya said. Meanwhile, the dollar index, which gauges the greenback's strength against a basket of six currencies, rose 0.22 per cent to 104.21. Global oil benchmark Brent crude futures climbed 0.19 per cent to USD 83.52 per barrel. The upward trend in the past three sessions led to a gain of 57 paise in the Indian currency, rebounding from its all-time low level of 83.11 against the greenback witnessed on Monday. According to reports, the rupee's sharp gain was attributed to the <keyword id="6354335" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="reserve-bank-of-india" source="Orion">Reserve Bank of India</keyword>'s move to prevent banks from short-term trading in offshore currency markets. The cautious move by investors ahead of the BRICS summit and US Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell's speech at the Jackson Hole Symposium restricted the upward movement of the dollar even as negative sentiment in the domestic equity markets weighed on the Indian currency, forex analysts said. "Expectation is that the Fed Chairman could maintain a hawkish tone and that could extend gains for the greenback," Gaurang Somaiya, Forex and bullion analyst <keyword id="248720" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="motilal-oswal-financial" source="Orion">Motilal Oswal Financial</keyword> Services said. At the interbank foreign exchange, the domestic unit opened strong at 82.55 and moved in the range of 82.36 and 82.61 against the American currency. It finally settled at 82.56 against the greenback, registering a gain of 16 paise over its previous close. On Wednesday, the rupee registered the highest single-day gain in more than two months and appreciated by 27 paise to close at 82.72 against the dollar. Earlier, the domestic unit witnessed the maximum intra-day gain of 35 paise on June 16 this year. Anuj Choudhary, Research Analyst at Sharekhan by BNP Paribas said, "Indian rupee gained for the third consecutive day on weakening US dollar and easing crude oil prices. The rupee also gained on reports that the Reserve Bank of India has asked banks not to indulge in short-term trading in the offshore markets." On Wednesday, the dollar initially gained on disappointing PMI data from the Eurozone and the UK but lost its initial gains on weaker-than-expected manufacturing and services PMI from the US. Choudhary said the rupee is expected to trade with a "slight positive bias on extended weakness in the US dollar and retreating crude oil prices". However, weak domestic markets may cap the upside. "Traders may remain cautious ahead of weekly unemployment claims and durable goods orders data from the US while investors may remain cautious ahead of Fed Chair Jerome Powell's speech at Jackson Hole Symposium tomorrow. USDINR spot price is expected to trade in a range of Rs 82.20 to Rs 82.85," he added. Jateen Trivedi, VP Research Analyst at LKP Securities, said India's moon mission with the successful landing of Chandrayaan-3 will attract the global investors' interest in the country's science and technology sector, offering robust support to the rupee. However, the rupee faced resistance due to the elevated level of dollar index hovering above 103. "The market's focus is now centered on the release of the Reserve Bank of India's meeting minutes, scheduled for later in the evening, along with the ongoing Jackson Hole Symposium, which will span over the next few days. "Given these factors, the rupee's trading range is anticipated to fall within 82.30 to 82.90, reflecting the prevailing market dynamics and influences," Trivedi added. The <keyword id="6355302" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="rupee" source="Orion">rupee</keyword> plunged 32 paise to close at an all-time low of 81.94 (provisional) against the US dollar on Thursday amid high volatility as firm crude oil prices weighed on the local unit. At the interbank foreign exchange market, the local currency opened on a positive note at 81.52, then pared all the gains to settle at an all-time low of 81.94 against the American currency, registering a decline of 32 paise over its previous close. During the day, the local unit witnessed an intra-day high of 81.51 and a low of 81.94 against the greenback. On Tuesday, the rupee appreciated by 20 paise to end at 81.62 against the US dollar. The forex market was closed on Wednesday on account of Dussehra. "Rupee, after appreciating marginally on Tuesday, is again starting to come under pressure. The dollar strengthened after services <keyword id="104215" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="pmi" source="Orion">PMI</keyword> and private payrolls numbers from the US came in better than estimates," said Gaurang Somaiya, Forex &amp; Bullion Analyst, Motilal Oswal Financial Services. Major crosses euro and pound continued to witness selling pressure at higher levels. The focus will be on the <keyword id="84979" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="european-central-bank" source="Orion">European Central Bank</keyword> (ECB) meeting minutes, Somaiya said. "We expect the USD/INR (Spot) to quote in the range of 81.20 and 82.05," Somaiya added. Meanwhile, the dollar index, which gauges the greenback's strength against a basket of six currencies, advanced 0.06 per cent to 111.27. Global oil benchmark Brent crude futures fell 0.08 per cent to USD 93.30 per barrel. On the domestic equity market front, the 30-share <keyword id="53232" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="bse-sensex" source="Orion">BSE Sensex</keyword> advanced 156.63 points or 0.27 per cent to end at 58,222.10, while the broader <keyword id="372424" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="nse-nifty" source="Orion">NSE Nifty</keyword> rose 57.50 points or 0.33 per cent to 17,331.80. Foreign institutional investors were net buyers in the capital market on Tuesday as they purchased shares worth Rs 1,344.63 crore, as per exchange data.

Forex traders said muted domestic equities and foreign fund outflows weighed on investor sentiments and restricted the gains. At the interbank foreign exchange market, the local unit opened at 82.30 and touched an intra-day high of 82.08 and a low of 82.33 against the greenback. It finally settled at 82.28, registering a rise of 10 paise over its previous close of 82.38. Forex traders said investors awaited the outcome of a slew of central bank meetings next week for additional clues on the pace of rate hikes. "Focus will now be shifting to the FOMC policy statement. The central bank could raise rates by 50 bps and maintain a less hawkish stance," said Gaurang Somaiya, Forex &amp; Bullion Analyst, Motilal Oswal Financial Services. "We expect the USD-INR (Spot) to trade sideways and quote in the range of 82.20 and 82.80," Somaiya added. Meanwhile, the dollar index, which gauges the greenback's strength against a basket of six currencies, declined 0.06 per cent to 104.71. Global oil benchmark Brent crude futures rose 1.22 per cent to USD 77.08 per barrel. On the domestic equity market front, the 30-share BSE Sensex declined 389.01 points or 0.62 per cent to end at 62,181.67, while the broader NSE Nifty fell 112.75 points or 0.61 per cent to 18,496.60. Foreign Institutional Investors (FIIs) remained net sellers in the capital markets on Thursday as they offloaded shares worth Rs 1,131.67 crore, according to exchange data.
