"Rupee rose sharply as the dollar plunged against its major crosses. Also, the ongoing pressures and a tight labour market indicated a stall in progress toward bringing inflation back to its 2 per cent target this year. Analysts also said market participants are expected to keep a close watch on the US non-farm payroll data to be released on Friday. Besides, weekly unemployment claims, trade balance and factory order data from the US are likely to provide further cues. "Today, the focus will be on the non-farm payrolls data, which is expected to come in marginally lower and that could weigh on the greenback. Apart from payrolls, services PMI number is also likely to trigger volatility for the dollar. We expect USD-INR (Spot) to trade sideways and quote in a range of 83.20-83.50," Somaiya said. India's manufacturing PMI fell to 58.8 in April 2024 from 59.1 in the previous month, a monthly survey said on Thursday. The seasonally adjusted HSBC India Manufacturing Purchasing Managers' Index (PMI), however, recorded the second fastest improvement in operating conditions in three-and-a-half years supported by buoyant demand. On Wednesday, the rupee registered the highest single-day gain in more than two months and appreciated by 27 paise to close at 82.72 against the dollar. Earlier, the domestic unit witnessed the maximum intra-day gain of 35 paise on June 16 this year. Anuj Choudhary, Research Analyst at Sharekhan by BNP Paribas said, "Indian rupee gained for the third consecutive day on weakening US dollar and easing crude oil prices. The rupee also gained on reports that the Reserve Bank of India has asked banks not to indulge in short-term trading in the offshore markets." On Wednesday, the dollar initially gained on disappointing PMI data from the Eurozone and the UK but lost its initial gains on weaker-than-expected manufacturing and services PMI from the US. Choudhary said the rupee is expected to trade with a "slight positive bias on extended weakness in the US dollar and retreating crude oil prices". However, weak domestic markets may cap the upside. The forex market was closed on Wednesday on account of Dussehra. "Rupee, after appreciating marginally on Tuesday, is again starting to come under pressure. The dollar strengthened after services <keyword id="104215" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="pmi" source="Orion">PMI</keyword> and private payrolls numbers from the US came in better than estimates," said Gaurang Somaiya, Forex &amp; Bullion Analyst, Motilal Oswal Financial Services. Major crosses euro and pound continued to witness selling pressure at higher levels. The focus will be on the <keyword id="84979" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="european-central-bank" source="Orion">European Central Bank</keyword> (ECB) meeting minutes, Somaiya said. "We expect the USD/INR (Spot) to quote in the range of 81.20 and 82.05," Somaiya added. Meanwhile, the dollar index, which gauges the greenback's strength against a basket of six currencies, advanced 0.06 per cent to 111.27. Global oil benchmark Brent crude futures fell 0.08 per cent to USD 93.30 per barrel. It finally settled at 82.28, registering a rise of 10 paise over its previous close of 82.38. Forex traders said investors awaited the outcome of a slew of central bank meetings next week for additional clues on the pace of rate hikes. "Focus will now be shifting to the FOMC policy statement. The central bank could raise rates by 50 bps and maintain a less hawkish stance," said Gaurang Somaiya, Forex &amp; Bullion Analyst, Motilal Oswal Financial Services. "We expect the USD-INR (Spot) to trade sideways and quote in the range of 82.20 and 82.80," Somaiya added. Meanwhile, the dollar index, which gauges the greenback's strength against a basket of six currencies, declined 0.06 per cent to 104.71. Global oil benchmark Brent crude futures rose 1.22 per cent to USD 77.08 per barrel. On the domestic equity market front, the 30-share BSE Sensex declined 389.01 points or 0.62 per cent to end at 62,181.67, while the broader NSE Nifty fell 112.75 points or 0.61 per cent to 18,496.60. Accordingly, other factors like failure of Brexit talks as well as changes in US Fed's stand might the <keyword id="2553808" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="downside-risks">downside risks</keyword>. "We expect the rupee to trade strong till the time equity flows are robust," said Sajal Gupta, Head, Forex and Rates, Edelweiss Securities. Last week, foreign institutional investors pumped in over ₹15,000 crores into the equity markets. The inflow not just lifted equities but also swelled the Reserve Bank's forex reserves. "But, risks of depreciation are rising with crude oil prices rising above $50 a barrel and rising monthly trade deficit," Gupta said. "Brexit talks failure can also lead to some volatility in markets." The crude oil prices have been gaining during the week in anticipation of the FDA's potential approval of Pfizer's vaccine, as Asia's economic recovery is making Chinese and Indian refiners acquire more oil, and on rising geopolitical risks in the Middle East after Iraq had two wells hit. Besides, the preliminary trade data on November showed that India became a net importer in November 2020, with a trade deficit of $9.96 billion. "The dollar has been falling as we expected and now has reached near term support," said Devarsh Vakil, Deputy Head of Research at HDFC Securities. "We expect the rupee-dollar to correct after four weeks of appreciation and head towards 74 mark next week. The 73.4 mark remains strong support for the pair." According to Gaurang Somaiya, Forex and Bullion Analyst, Motilal Oswal Financial Services, said: "For the week, focus will be on inflation number; expectation is that the number could rise and that would further trim expectation of rate cut by the RBI." "For the week, we expect the USD-INR (Spot) to trade sideways to positive and quote in the range of 73.40 and 74.20." Next week, the National Statistics Office is slated to release the macro-economic data points of <keyword id="134096" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="consumer-price-index">Consumer Price Index</keyword> on December 14. It will also release <keyword id="9407451" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="the-wholesale-price-index">the Wholesale Price Index</keyword> on Monday. "While the dollar bulls will be on the sidelines ahead of next week's Fed policy. We expect the Fed to maintain a status quo however update the growth and inflation forecast along with a dovish stance." "But still there exist Brexit worries which may activate some dollar uptick. So unless the USD-INR spot doesn't consistently trade above 74, the trading range would continue to be 73.25-74. If 74 breaks then price can surge towards 74.20 zone."
