New Delhi, Apr 23 () Amid the country-wide, anti-corona fight, specially designed drones have been pressed into service to disinfect Varanasi, the Prime Minister Narendra Modi's Lok Sabha constituency, said the office of Principal Scientific Adviser on Thursday.<p>Hs novel disinfection measure would soon be replicated in other cities of the country, the PSA office said. </p><p>A statement by the PSA's office said it has collaborated with Invest India, the country's National Investment Promotion Agency through the AGNIi Mission, and Invest India's Business Immunity Platform (BIP) - to facilitate the use of specially designed drones to sanitise Varanasi against the coronavirus.</p><p>The Invest India's BIP is designed as a comprehensive resource to help businesses and investors get real-time updates on India's active response to COVID-19.</p><p>Accelerating Growth of New India's Innovations or AGNIi is a national initiative under the guidance and support of the PSA, with an aim to support the ongoing efforts to boost the innovation ecosystem in the country. </p><p>The statement said using drones, authorities could spray disinfectant over large, crowded, vulnerable urban areas by protecting city-dwellers from Covid-19, while reducing human contact to keep frontline workers safe.</p><p>Helping Garuda Aerospace, a Chennai-based drone startup, has been roped in for this, it said. </p>"Drone operations in Varanasi have just commenced. The second, an </span><a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/category/ethiopian-airlines">Ethiopian Airlines</a><span> crash on March 10, killed all 157 people on board.</span><span></span></p><p><span>Garuda wants to replace some 737 Max orders with larger Boeing aircraft, <a href="https://www.wsj.com/articles/indonesia-flag-carrier-seeks-to-cancel-order-for-49-boeing-737-max-jets-11553232103">The Wall Street Journal</a> reports.</span></p><p><em><strong>Read more: </strong><a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/boeing-737-max-airlines-with-most-planes-2019-3">These 12 airlines have the most Boeing 737 MAX aircraft in their fleet</a></em></p><p>The stakes are high for Boeing and the United States' economy, as the aerospace manufacturer is the US' largest exporter. Disruptions to 737 Max production could drag on US GDP, JPMorgan said in a note to clients on Friday.</p><p>If 737 Max production stops, "it would take about 0.15% off the level of GDP, or about 0.6%-point off the quarterly annualized growth rate of GDP in the quarter in which production is stopped," the bank said.</p><p>But other airlines won't necessarily follow Garuda's lead in canceling 737 Max 8 orders. Airlines have not stopped financing 737 Max aircraft that have yet to be delivered, and valuations for the aircraft are the same as before they were grounded in much of the world, according to The Wall Street Journal. </p><h2>Order revisions are more likely than cancellations</h2><p>If airlines do try to change the terms of their orders, they're more likely to reduce their size or renegotiate them, rather than canceling them entirely, the aviation analysts Henry Harteveldt and George Hamlin told Business Insider.</p><p>The context of Garuda's decision is important to consider, said Harteveldt, <span>the founder of the travel-research company Atmosphere Research Group.</span> Garuda is the national airline of Indonesia, the site of the October 2018 Lion Air crash, which means "there is a heightened awareness" of the March 10 crash there, Harteveldt said.</p><p>And the decision to cancel an aircraft order is a difficult one. Boeing and Airbus dominate the market for large, commercial aircraft, and both have order backlogs, said Hamlin, the president of Hamlin <keyword id="34991" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="transportation">Transportation</keyword> Consulting.</p><p>"Right now, if you cancel your Max order, what are you going to substitute for? Airbus would love to have more business and to take customers from Boeing, but the A320 family and the 737 line are sold out for years into the future," he said. "You could probably find the occasional airplane, but switching a whole, large fleet order would be quite difficult."</p><p>Moving from Boeing to Airbus aircraft could be particularly challenging, since Airbus has less production capacity than Boeing, Harteveldt said.</p><h2>Canceling an aircraft order is difficult</h2><p>Beyond capacity constraints, airlines make a series of investments and decisions when they order an aircraft - like training employees, buying the equipment and parts necessary for maintenance, and designing a schedule based around the plane's capabilities - that can be difficult to untangle.</p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">"As an airline, when you commit to an airplane, it's like getting married in a place where divorce is very difficult," Harteveldt said.</span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Airlines that have already received the 737 Max 8 face another set of questions as the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/ethiopia-crash-countries-that-have-grounded-the-boeing-737-max-2019-3">737 Max 8 remains grounded</a><span> in many countries while investigators work to determine what caused the two recent crashes. American Airlines said on Sunday that it was <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/american-airlines-extends-boeing-737-max-flight-cancellations-through-april-24-2019-3">canceling around 90 flights per day</a> due to the 737 Max grounding and extended the cancellations through April 24.</span></span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;"><span> </span></span><span style="font-weight: 400;"><span>Boeing could end up paying airlines to compensate them for lost revenue opportunities while the 737 Max 8 is grounded, Hamlin said. <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/norwegian-air-to-seek-compensation-from-boeing-for-max-groundings-2019-3">Norwegian Air</a> has already requested that Boeing do so.</span></span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;"><span>Boeing did not immediately respond to Business Insider's request for comment.</span></span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;"><span>The Lion Air and Ethiopian Airlines crashes have put Boeing under intense scrutiny. <a href="https://www.cnn.com/2019/03/20/business/boeing-justice-department-subpoenas/index.html">CNN</a> reported on Thursday that the Department of Justice (DOJ) <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/doj-reportedly-subpoenas-boeing-as-part-of-criminal-investigation-2019-3">has subpoenaed Boeing</a> as part of a criminal investigation into the certification and marketing processes for the 737 Max aircraft.</span></span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;"><span>The investigation reportedly concerns the process Boeing used to determine its 737 Max aircraft were safe for flight and the data it gave to the Federal Aviation Administration about that process. One airline has attempted to cancel its order for Boeing's 737 Max 8. Here's why it would be difficult for other airlines to do the same.

<p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div>Airbus and Boeing are expected sell more than 200 aircraft this <span>week at the 2015 Paris Air Show.</span></p><p><span>Indonesia's Garuda has ordered 60 Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner and 737Max jets valued at $11 billion and 30 Airbus A350XWB jets worth as much as $11 billion.</span></p><p>In addition, Saudi Arabia's national airline <a href="http://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2015-06-14/airbus-said-to-win-saudia-order-for-50-jets-worth-7-7-billion" target="_blank">Saudia order</a> 50 Airbus A330 Regional and A320neo jets valued at $7.7 billion.</p><p>GE's aviation leasing service has placed orders for 60 Airbus A320neo worth up to $6.4 billion.</p><p>While Qatar Airways has ordered 14 Boeing 777 widebody jets valued at $4.8 billion. </p><p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">In fact, the two plane makers are expecting to book sales of as much as $23 billion just in narrow-body A320 and 737 airliners alone, </span><a href="http://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2015-06-14/boeing-airbus-said-to-near-23-billion-order-haul-at-air-show" target="_blank">Bloomberg </a><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">reported. </span></p><p><span>But as impressive as these figures may be, sales are not expected to surpass that of the black Friday free-for-all of the last Paris Air Show. </span></p><p><span>In 2013, airlines and leasing companies ordered more than $170 billion in new airplanes over the week-long show. It took just three days for the tally to roll past the $100 billion mark.</span></p><p><span>According to <a href="http://uk.reuters.com/article/2013/06/21/uk-air-show-airbus-orders-idUKBRE95K0BP20130621" target="_blank">Reuters</a>, Boeing and Airbus - alone - sold a mind-blowing 908 aircraft that week with a combined sticker value of $135 billion. </span></p><p><span><span>That's billion with a "b."</span></span></p><p><span>Sure, airlines often negotiate extensive discounts off the sticker price. But still, even at half price, that's an impressive take.</span></p><p>Much of 2013's monstrous sales were as a result of massive of orders for <a href="http://www.airbus.com/presscentre/pressreleases/press-release-detail/detail/airbus-books-almost-us70-billion-at-paris-air-show-2013/" target="_blank">Airbus' next generation </a>A320neo and A350XWB jets along with Boeing's new 737max and 787 Dreamliners - pretty much the same planes being sold at the 2015 show.</p><p>So why have sales slowed?</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div>The biggest difference between now and then is that <span>companies like Airbus and Boeing have built up </span>an enormous backlog of orders.</p><p>"Airplane makers have been selling twice as many planes as they can build," Deloitte vice chairman and head of US Aerospace &amp; Defense Tom Captain told Business Insider in an interview.</p><p>According to Captain, airplane manufacturers have a record 2888 planes on order with a production backlog of 9 years. That means airlines and leasing companies won't be able to take delivery of some of their ordered aircraft for nearly a decade. </p><p>This delay may be dissuading some buyers from making purchases until these backlogs start to clear up.</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">Last year, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/delta-airlines-just-placed-a-14-billion-order-for-airbus-a350-900-and-a330neo-2014-11" target="_blank">Delta Airlines placed a $14 billion order</a> for 50 Airbus widebody jets. </span><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">According to </span><a href="http://www.reuters.com/article/2014/11/20/us-airbus-group-delta-air-lines-idUSKCN0J402S20141120" target="_blank">Reuters</a><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">, one reason the Atlanta-based carrier decided against the Boeing Dreamliner is due to the lack of production slots available for the hot selling jet.</span></p><p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">And Airbus's ability to deliver the planes in a shorter time frame seemed to have tipped the balance towards the European plane maker.</span></p><p>However, airplane manufacturers are working to reverse this trend by ramping up the rate of production. According to Captain, plane makers increased the rate of deliveries 18% between 2011-2014.</p><p>Airbus has opened new production facilities in China and in Mobile, Alabama.
