<ul class="summary-list"><li>I tried eight vegan-friendly holiday roasts to see which is the best.</li><li>The original Tofurky roast and the Field Roast Celebration Roast have classic turkey-like flavors.</li></ul>Thanksgiving has always been one of my favorite holidays because of its delicious <keyword id="6181" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Food" source="Orion">food</keyword>.That didn't change when I <a href="https://www.insider.com/famous-singers-musicians-who-have-been-vegan">became vegan about seven years ago</a>, if anything, I've only spent more time in the kitchen since. Side dishes are easy enough to adapt to a plant-based diet if you swap in non-dairy butter and nut milk. But if you're a new <keyword id="11955817" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="Vegan" source="Orion">vegan</keyword>, plant-curious, or <a href="https://www.insider.com/best-vegan-items-to-buy-at-costco-2019-6">hosting someone who doesn't eat meat</a>, you might be stuck on what to do for a centerpiece.Fortunately, many companies make vegan turkey-like or ham-like roasts for the fall and winter holidays. It's a nod to tradition, but these roasts aren't just a sad stand-in for meat — <a href="https://www.insider.com/foods-vegans-buy-at-trader-joes-2019-5">some of them are seriously good</a>.For the sake of culinary science, I tried eight different vegan holiday roasts and compared them side-by-side.Here's how it went:<h2>The original Tofurky roast is a tradition in and of itself</h2><div type="image" title="tofurky in process 1" height="2274" width="3024" msid="79251171" hostid="261"></div>The original meatless roast, <a href="https://tofurky.com/our-story/our-roots/">Tofurky</a> made its big debut when it hit stores in 1995, giving vegetarians and vegans a new option for their turkey-free holidays.The 26-ounce plant-based roast made primarily of soy and seitan, which is meant to mimic meat and contains a wild-rice stuffing, cost me <a href="https://shop.sprouts.com/product/11554/tofurky-stuffed-veggie-roast" rel="nofollow sponsored">$13.99 at Sprouts</a>.This pack doesn't contain gravy, but Tofurky sells meal kits that include both the roast and a vegan gravy, or even a whole "<a href="https://tofurky.com/what-we-make/roasts/feast/#flavormenu">feast</a>" that includes a dessert as well. Although the roast appears to be pretty small, it's actually quite dense.It was pretty easy to cook, though it did need time to thaw. The instructions suggested thawing it for 24 hours in the refrigerator, but the package said you can use a hot water bath if you're in a pinch.All of the roasts, including the Tofurky original, are basically cooked the same way: Remove the plastic casing, cover with foil, bake in the oven so it heats, and cook it uncovered for another 10 to 15 minutes to brown.<div type="image" title="tofurky og in process" height="3024" width="4032" msid="79251172" hostid="261"></div>Tofurky needs to be basted when you first put it in the oven and about an hour and 15 minutes later after you uncover it. The box has various suggestions for making a homemade baste out of <a href="https://www.insider.com/trader-joes-best-vegan-foods-2019-5">common pantry items</a>, and I used a mix of olive oil, mushroom broth, and spices.The original Tofurky took about an hour and 25 minutes total to bake. I cooked it on its own for the sake of this experiment, but normally I'd surround the roast with hearty vegetables, like carrots and potatoes, for added moisture and flavor.<div type="image" title="tofurky og done" height="3024" width="4032" msid="79251175" hostid="261"></div>Since I was cooking with a flat baking sheet rather than a roast pan, I shaped the aluminum foil covering into a little boat to hold the basting liquid close to the roast. When my roommates and I dug into the final product, <a href="https://www.insider.com/the-potential-risks-of-being-vegan-2019-4">there were pros and cons</a>.We found the texture a little tough, but overall the taste was quite good — meaty, savory, and comforting — though a bit salty. Tofurky is a classic, and I imagine many longtime vegetarians and vegans have a special place for it in their hearts as I do.My recommendation is to slice the roast as thinly as you can for optimal texture and, if you're sensitive to salt, be mindful of how much of it you use in your baste.Like actual turkey, this can be a little on the dry side, so be sure to serve with gravy and/or cranberry sauce.<h2>The Tofurky ham was new to me, and a strong contender</h2><div type="image" title="tofurky ham done(1)" height="2268" width="3023" msid="79251176" hostid="261"></div>I've had the original Tofurky roast many times, but I had never tried its beer-glazed ham-style roast. The 19-ounce ham-style roast cost <a href="https://shop.sprouts.com/product/49772/tofurky-vegan-ham-style-roast" rel="nofollow sponsored">$13.99 at Sprouts</a> and was even easier to cook. The package also includes an amber-ale glaze to drizzle over the roast when you uncover it.This roast doesn't need to be thawed, making it an even better option for low-stress holidays and spontaneous feasts. The "ham," which is also made of a soy and seitan mix, looks fairly similar to the original Tofurky roast but in a deeper pink color. It also comes with a net around it.If you thaw the roast first, as I did, it cooks in a total of an hour and a half. Like the original, it's baked covered with foil in the oven for an hour and 15 minutes, then uncovered for 15 more. <div type="image" title="tofurky ham slicing" height="2274" width="3024" msid="79251178" hostid="261"></div>This glaze was delicious — sweet, tangy, and rich, dripping over a moist and flavorful vegan "ham." This roast was a hit with my roommates and I'd gladly eat it again — <a href="https://www.insider.com/vegan-foods-that-keep-you-full-2019-2">maybe even for a regular weekday dinner.</a><h2>We found the Field Roast Celebration Roast to be pretty similar to the classic Tofurky</h2><div type="image" title="field roast original done" height="2268" width="3023" msid="79251180" hostid="261"></div>Field Roast's holiday roasts tend to be pretty well-received in my family, so I had high expectations for this one. Being the smallest roast, this one predictably cooked the fastest and was about as easy, if not easier, to prepare than the previous ones. Technically, you don't even need to cook it — according to the package, you can slice it and eat it cold.If you do cook it, it doesn't need to be covered. Simply place in a roasting pan, baste (I used the same mushroom broth, olive oil, and seasoning mixture as before), and cook for 30 to 40 minutes. I've had this one before, but it tastes more similar to the classic Tofurky roast than I remembered.This is surprising because the Field Roast (which is, notably for those with allergies, soy-free) has a pretty different ingredient makeup with its blend of seitan and vegetables.Somehow it managed to have a good, turkey-like flavor, similar to the Tofurky, but with a slightly softer texture. I would also recommend pairing gravy and/or cranberry sauce with this roast to help make it moister.<h2>The Field Roast hazelnut cranberry roast en croute is a personal favorite of mine</h2><div type="image" title="field roast en croute done w box" height="2274" width="3024" msid="79251181" hostid="261"></div>In addition to its large and small Celebration Roasts, the brand Field Roast makes a 32-ounce pastry-encrusted hazelnut cranberry roast that's been my holiday go-to for the last few years. I got mine for <a href="https://shop.sprouts.com/product/26824/field-roast-hazelnut-cranberry-en-croute" rel="nofollow sponsored">$19.99 at Sprouts</a>. Once thawed, the roast took an hour to cook — 45 minutes covered, 15 minutes uncovered. It doesn't require basting because it's wrapped in puff pastry.My only word of advice here is that when the instructions say to cover the loaf loosely with foil, they mean it. I wrapped my roast a little too tightly and some of the puff pastry got stuck to the foil. The puff pastry didn't really rise for me or get a golden look, but I was able to confirm that I still really like this loaf.<div type="image" title="field roast en croute serving" height="2274" width="3024" msid="79251182" hostid="261"></div>The carb coating gives this roast an obvious advantage, and its delicious filling is a blend of seitan, cranberries, and hazelnuts.Unlike the other roasts, this one <a href="https://www.insider.com/vegan-cooking-tips-2018-12">isn't trying to stand in for meat</a> as it is just vaguely suggesting that it's a traditional holiday roast.I think that's exactly why I like it — although seitan is the primary ingredient, the cranberry and hazelnut flavors boldly come through, making this loaf sweet, tangy, nutty, savory, and complex.<h2>Vegetarian Plus has a vegan turkey roll and ham roll, which were very different from the rest</h2><div type="image" title="VegPlus rolls uncooked" height="3024" width="4032" msid="79251183" hostid="261"></div>The 16-ounce turkey roll cost me $23.99 at Sprouts, making it one of the most expensive options on this list. It also included a sizable packet of cinnaberry glaze.This turkey-esque roast cooks similarly to the others: Set on a lightly oiled sheet and bake for 45 minutes covered with aluminum foil, then another 10 minutes without.It needs to be thawed first, but you can do so by placing the still-wrapped loaf in a hot water bath if you're short on time. The outside is encrusted with spices, so basting isn't necessary.The instructions recommend heating the cinnaberry glaze on the stovetop, but microwaving it in a glass container worked just fine.Take note: Within the plastic wrapping, the roll itself is covered with netting and clips that aren't mentioned in the instructions. I didn't see them amidst the pepper crust until after cooking, so be sure to remove those before serving. <div type="image" title="The Vegetarian Plus vegan turkey roll" height="2268" width="3023" msid="79251185" hostid="261"></div>I wasn't a fan of this roast because the spice rub on the outside was too aggressively black peppery for my taste, although if you like pepper, it might be right up your alley. The flavor of the inside of the roll was pretty good, if mild.It was the same kind of soft wheat and soy meat that I've encountered in <a href="https://www.insider.com/best-vegan-foods-2018-12">casual vegan restaurants before</a>, and I don't mind it, but my roommates didn't care much for it.The cinnaberry glaze, as you might expect, is a very cinnamony cranberry sauce and I really liked it both on the "turkey" and on its own.<h2>The ham roll was very similar to the turkey version</h2><div type="image" title="VegPlus ham roll done" height="2268" width="3023" msid="79251186" hostid="261"></div>This roughly 40-ounce roast was the most expensive one I picked up, retailing at <a href="https://store.veganessentials.com/glazed-ham-roll-by-vegetarian-plus-p3863.aspx">$24.99 from Sprouts</a>.Once I opened it up and realized how huge it was, though, it seemed like a good value. The size is definitely a factor worth considering if you're hoping to feed a lot of people. It also comes with a sticky-sweet apricot-plum glaze that I heated in the microwave. It's meant to be placed on a lightly oiled baking tray and covered with aluminum foil, baked for an hour and 10 minutes, then uncovered and glazed every five minutes for 20 more minutes.Because of the glazing and re-glazing, this one was the most labor-intensive, though not by much. I used a spatula to pick up and re-drip the fallen sauce, keep as much of the reddish glaze as possible on the roast itself. The large roll took about an hour and a half total to cook after it was thawed. <a href="https://www.insider.com/vegetarian-vegan-food-unhealthy-2018-9">To my vegan eyes</a>, this roast's appearance was pretty ham-like since it was very smooth and pink.The flavor of this one was almost identical to the interior of the Vegetarian Plus turkey roll, though maybe a little richer.Again, I liked this a little more than my roommates did, but we all agreed it would be better to incorporate this roll into fried rice and other leftovers rather than eat it on its own. <h2>I was excited to try the Gardein holiday roast</h2><div type="image" title="gardein roast done w box" height="2274" width="3024" msid="79251189" hostid="261"></div>I regularly eat Gardein's vegan "meat" products when I'm craving something specific, so I had high hopes for the brand's holiday roast, which I had never tried before.The 40-ounce roast cost <a href="https://products.wholefoodsmarket.com/product/gardein-cranberry-kale-and-wild-rice-stuffing-holiday-roast-b0050f" rel="nofollow sponsored">$12.59 at Whole Foods</a> and came with four convenient packets of frozen gravy.This roast has a breaded exterior, so basting is not necessary. Its total cook time, according to package directions, is an hour and 20 minutes, and it's meant to be cooked from frozen.I'm not sure what I expected, but I was pleasantly surprised by the finished product.The roast was lightly crispy and golden brown on the outside with a soft and adequately moist interior and vegetable stuffing. Its mild flavor tastes like carrot and celery, thanks to the stuffing. The gravy was delicious too, and a perfect pair for the roast.I thought it tasted like the definition of <a href="https://www.insider.com/best-vegan-restaurant-in-every-state-2018-8">comfort food</a>, and my roommates largely agreed. I would certainly consider buying this one again.<h2>The 365 meatless plant-based roast was just OK</h2><div type="image" title="vegan roasts" height="900" width="1200" msid="79251193" hostid="261"></div>I discovered this roast at the last minute and was eager to try it since thrifty shoppers often <a href="https://www.insider.com/how-to-be-vegan-on-a-budget-cheap-2018-8">flock to store-brand products for a deal</a>.The 32-ounce roast cost <a href="https://products.wholefoodsmarket.com/product/whole-foods-market-holiday-plant-based-roast-e772d0" rel="nofollow sponsored">$11.99 at Whole Foods</a> and comes with its own gravy in two frozen packets.Upon unboxing, it became clear that this roast was very similar to the Gardein one with its breadcrumb-crusted exterior, vegetable stuffing, and gravy for serving.The roast took just under 70 minutes to cook.<div type="image" title="365 turkey" height="900" width="1200" msid="79251194" hostid="261"></div>The roast was definitely similar to the Gardein one —soft, comforting, vegetal, mild — albeit a little less flavorful, in my opinion.I'd consider the roast itself pretty middle-of-the-road, not amazing or terrible, but the gravy was a different story. For some reason, it really rubbed me and both of my roommates the wrong way. It was sort of thin, sort of chicken-y, and didn't go well with the roast at all.If you purchase this kit, I would recommend making or buying another gravy instead of using the one that's included. <h2>The verdict: You can't go wrong with the pastry-covered roast</h2><div type="image" title="vegan roasts table" height="600" width="1200" msid="79251238" hostid="261"></div>Even though the Field Roast hazelnut cranberry roast didn't come out perfectly golden brown, it's still my favorite store-bought roast.The <a href="https://www.insider.com/best-vegan-recipe-ingredients-2018-7">flavors are bright and seasonal</a>, and there's crusty, flaky pastry involved. It's moist enough that you don't necessarily need gravy or sauce, although I'd still recommend adding some to amp up the delicious flavors.The Gardein holiday roast was a close second that I can't wait to dig back into. Overall, most of these roasts were really <a href="https://www.insider.com/vegan-alternatives-for-popular-recipe-ingredients-2018-7">simple to prepare</a>. Sales in the key grocery and snacks segment fell 7.1% and organic net sales declined 0.7% . Researchers found participants who ate at least two servings of plant-based meat for eight weeks lowered their risk of cardiovascular disease compared to participants who ate the same amount of animal meat - primarily beef and pork - for the same duration. <a href="http://insider.com/is-red-meat-bad-for-you" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Red meat</a>, in particular, is tied to an increased risk of chronic diseases like <a href="https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3942738/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">type 2 diabetes</a> and <a href="https://www.nih.gov/news-events/nih-research-matters/eating-red-meat-daily-triples-heart-disease-related-chemical" target="_blank" rel="noopener">heart disease</a>. Processed meats like sausage, bacon, and hot dogs also increase the risk of <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/foods-that-contribute-to-cancer-2019-2#processed-meats-like-sausage-bacon-and-hot-dogs-can-up-a-persons-cancer-risk-especially-if-theyre-eaten-on-a-regular-basis-3" target="_blank" rel="noopener">stomach and bowel cancers</a>.However, plant-based meats are far from perfect. Why plant-based meats are healthier than regular meats, according to dietitians

Sales of meat alternatives in the US rose to $553 million in 2012, up from $513 million two years earlier, according to market-research firm Mintel.
Meanwhile, Americans' per capita consumption of meat and poultry has declined more than 9%, from 221.6 pounds in 2007 to an estimated 200.8 pounds this year, according to the USDA.
Dozens of well-financed startups are battling each other to capture America's growing population of plant protein-seekers, including Beyond Meat, Impossible Foods and Hampton Creek, the <a href="http://online.wsj.com/articles/the-secret-of-these-new-veggie-burgers-plant-blood-1412725267">Wall Street Journal</a> reported earlier this month. 
One of the brands at the head of the pack is five-year-old Gardein, which is based out of Canada. 
Gardein expects to generate <keyword id="6354851" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="Retail">retail</keyword> sales of $100 million this year, the company's founder and president, Yves Potvin, told Business Insider. That makes it one of the top five meatless brands in the country, according to sales estimates by Mintel. 
The company's meatless meatballs, beefless tips, chick'n tenders and two dozen other products are sold at roughly 22,000 grocery stores and restaurants across the country. Gardein's products are also served in the cafeterias of more than 70 college campuses and at the corporate headquarters of Yahoo!, Google, Microsoft and AOL.
<div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div></div></div>"Restaurants is one of the fastest growing segments for us," Potvin said, noting that Gardein expects to double foodservice sales next year. 
More than a dozen Gardein products are offered at <a href="http://www.yardhouse.com/menus/gardein.aspx">Yard House</a>, a chain of 60 restaurants owned by Olive Garden parent company Darden Restaurants, and <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/mcdonalds-execs-launch-lyfe-kitchen-2014-7">Lyfe Kitchen</a>, a fast-growing chain launched by two former McDonald's executives. 
The diner chain <a href="http://www.johnnyrockets.com/home.html">Johnny Rockets</a>, which has 300 locations around the world, just launched a test menu with Gardein products and the company is also in talks with Chili's, which has more than 1,500 restaurants, Potvin said.
Surprisingly, vegetarians and vegans don't make up a majority of Gardein's consumers. Most of the company's consumers describe themselves as flexitarians, which means they eat a primarily plant-based diet supplemented by occasional meat consumption. 
"Many people are just incorporating Gardein into their diets to diversify their protein," Potvin said. 
For the purposes of this story, I tried some of Gardein's newest offerings from the frozen aisle. I'm a meat eater and I don't typically eat frozen foods so I didn't have very high expectations.
I ate the Beefless Sliders, the 7-Grain Crispy Chick'n Tenders, and the Golden Fishless Filets.

They were much better with some ketchup. 
In the future, I would add the filets and tenders to a salad instead of eating them alone.
I was more impressed by the beefless sliders.

Every two tenders, for example, is 100 calories and contains 240 milligrams of sodium and 8 grams of protein.

US meat-processing giant Tyson Foods said last week that it <a href="https://www.reuters.com/article/us-tyson-foods-beyond-meat/tyson-sells-stake-in-plant-based-meat-maker-beyond-meat-idUSKCN1S026U">sold</a> its 6.5% Beyond Meat stake as it looks to develop its own line of alternative-meat items.Beyond Meat is also debuting as an unprofitable company, which is not all that uncommon for young firms aiming to ramp up growth. It has generated losses in each year since its 2009 founding, and its losses only slightly narrowed from 2017 to 2018.The company lost $29.9 million in 2018, $30.4 million in 2017, and $25.1 million in 2016 as it "invested in innovation and growth." Plant-based-burger maker Beyond Meat is set to begin trading as the latest disruptive, money-losing company this year

Mike Roberts, the former global president of McDonald's, teamed up with Stephen Sidwell, who helped found the meat substitute <a href="http://gardein.com/">Gardein</a>, and Mike Donahue, McDonald's USA's former chief of corporate communications, to launch <a href="http://www.lyfekitchen.com/">LYFE Kitchen</a> three years ago. 
The chain, which calls itself "fresh casual," now has 10 locations and ambitious plans to open 250 more within the next five years. Current locations include California, Texas, Colorado, Illinois, and Nevada. 
Every dish on the menu is under 600 calories with less than 1,000 milligrams of sodium and the average check size is $4 to $14, according to the company. Butter, trans fats, white sugar, high-fructose corn syrup and other food additives are banned from the menu and locally-sourced ingredients are used when available. 
The restaurants, which feature indoor herb gardens and bamboo tables, also offer wine on tap and organic beer.
For meat eaters, the chain offers grass-fed beef and chicken. There are also vegan, vegetarian, and gluten-free options. The menu was built by Food Network star Jeremy Bringardner, vegan chef Tal Ronnen, and Art Smith, Oprah Winfrey's former chef.
The chain's most popular dishes include quinoa buttermilk pancakes with berries and Greek yogurt, "Unfried Chicken" (pictured below) with roasted brussels sprouts, butternut squash, dried cranberries, and cashew cream, and a "Grain Bowl" with stir-fried vegetables and bee?ess tips served over quinoa, black rice and cilantro with sweet chile-ginger sauce.

"Some [customers] want to stay and relax, others need to move quickly at lunch, so our average serving time is under 10 minutes," Donahue told <a href="http://vegas.eater.com/archives/2014/07/17/mike-donahue-talks-about-all-things-lyfe-kitchen.php">Eater Las Vegas</a>. "We believe we're a 'LYFEstyle restaurant or LSR' that caters to all of your eating occasions."
This is the 273-calorie Barramundi Noodle Bowl featuring sea bass with soba noodles, mushrooms, scallions, and edamame in kimchi broth.

Prices for individual meals range from $4.99 to $6.99.
Bonnie Riggs, a restaurant analyst for the <a href="https://www.npd.com/wps/portal/npd/us/home/">NPD Group</a>, says health-focused fast casual chains like LYFE Kitchen will be the next biggest growth opportunity in the restaurant industry. 
"They really appeal to consumers who want to eat healthier or have lighter fare," she said. "They are going to benefit from both the changing eating habits of the Boomers ... and also the younger generation, the millennials" who are increasingly seeking fresh, convenient, quality foods at a reasonable price. 
LYFE gets relatively high ratings on <a href="http://www.yelp.com/biz/lyfe-kitchen-palo-alto">Yelp</a> and New York Times food critic Mark Bittman wrote last year that he tried the menu and "came away impressed."
"Lyfe has the pedigree, menu, financing, plan and ambition to take on the major chains," Bittman <a href="http://www.nytimes.com/2013/04/07/magazine/yes-healthful-fast-food-is-possible-but-edible.html?pagewanted=all&amp;_r=0">wrote</a>. "I tasted terrific salads, like a beet-and-farro one ($9) that could easily pass for a starter at a good restaurant, and breakfast selections, like steel-cut oatmeal with yogurt and real maple syrup ($5) and a tofu wrap ($6.50), were actually delicious."

It's like peanut butter in your mouth. That's me and a few hungry coworkers tasting 13 different veggie burgers.Ian: Nope, nope, nope, nope. It tastes like broccoli.Benji: Today, you can find veggie burgers pretty much everywhere. And some brands are even trying to give real beef a run for its money. But how do they all stack up? And are they really that much healthier than the real thing? That's what I set out to discover.Let's go hunt some veggie burgers! There are so many options! In grocery stores, I found your typical brands, like Boca and MorningStar. And at fast-food chains, I picked up the Impossible Burger and the Beyond Burger. And after that, there was nothing left to do but eat and rank which burgers reigned supreme.Kyle Desiderio: This is like re-re-re-refried beans.Benji: Spoiler, that brand wasn't a favorite.Nico: This is beans on, like, the second week. Beans.Kyle: Oh, God.Benji: In the end, six volunteers, including me, tasted all 13 veggie burgers. Plus, one real beef burger, which I tossed in for good measure. We scored each burger on its overall look, smell, taste, and texture, and on how it compared to a real beef burger.Ian: That's like wet sand. It just fell apart.Meredith: You don't need teeth to eat this.Benji: Overall, the veggie burgers... well, they weren't very popular. But one did stand out: the Impossible Burger from Burger King.Commercial: With a patty made from plants, no beef. Get it while it lasts.Nico: That's a burger. Holy moly!Kyle: That's really good. This is the best one by far.Nico: In terms of taste. I thought we were gonna be sad this whole time.Benji: It got a near-perfect score in the first category. It even beat out the beef burger, and it was just shy of the beef burger in the second one. Which makes sense, because, you know, beef should win in a category about how meat-like something is. The only other veggie burger that came close in either category was Gardein.But as you can see, it was still several points away from Impossible. And there was something else I noticed. Many of the low-scoring burgers were knocked for smelling and tasting artificial.Meredith: No. I taste chemicals. This tastes like plastic, like, up in the back of your palate. And I can't get past that.Ian: It smells like Clorox.Benji: And that got me thinking, are these burgers actually good for you? After all, eating healthy is one of the main reasons why people avoid red meat. So I asked a registered dietitian.Today we're gonna talk about veggie burgers, so I thought it was appropriate that we would get one of the new Impossible Burgers from Burger King.Lisa Moskovitz: I don't regularly eat Burger King, or at least I don't want anyone to know that I do (laughs).Benji: After I was scolded for making a dietician eat fast food, we got into it.Lisa: Hm.Benji: From a health point of view, what should you consider?Lisa: If it's gonna be the source of protein, then you definitely wanna look at the protein content.Benji: She said to shoot for:Lisa: 15 to 30 grams of protein per veggie burger.Benji: So, how did our burgers measure up? Let's take a look.As you can see, a lot of them had plenty of protein, like Dr. Praeger's. Twenty-eight grams! That's way more than even the beef burger. And while a lot of veggie-burger protein comes from soy, Moskovitz said that's not a problem.Lisa: Now, the consensus is pretty much that not only is soy not bad for you, but it actually can fight off cancer. It can be really good for your heart, and as a vegetarian and definitely as a vegan, it's a really good source of complete protein.Benji: You should also be mindful of sodium.Lisa: The average healthy adult should try to keep it under 2,300 milligrams of sodium per day. So, if the veggie burger is clocking in at over 600 to 700 milligrams of salt, you know, that's also something to consider.Benji: Now, all 13 veggie burgers did have more sodium than the beef patty. But they were still well below that 600-milligram mark. And another nutrient to look out for is:Lisa: Saturated fat. Especially if you have a history of high cholesterol or any sort of heart disease. If you can find one that has, like, less than 2 or 3 grams of saturated fat, that would be great.Benji: Here's where the Impossible and Beyond burgers stood out. Unlike most of the other veggie burgers, they had a similar amount of saturated fat as beef. And that's at least partly why they taste so much like the real thing. But there's one type of fat that really sets veggie burgers apart from real beef. And that's trans fat.Lisa: The one thing you'll ever hear a dietician say don't eat ever is trans fat. You know, everything in moderation, except for trans fat. It increases your bad LDL cholesterol, and it decreases your good HDL cholesterol.Benji: So, there's actually good reason to believe that veggie burgers are healthier than meat. Especially considering that red meat has been linked to some forms of cancer. But that doesn't mean veggie burgers are healthy in general. Case in point, remember that chemical taste?Meredith: I taste chemicals.Benji: It might have something to do with the dozens of ingredients added to these burgers to make them taste like a beef patty.Lisa: If it has a ton of ingredients, you know, that's probably an issue. And if a lot of those things a 5-year-old can't pronounce, then that's even more of an issue.Benji: I mean, I can't even pronounce these. And how you prepare that burger also matters.Lisa: Are you putting cheese on it? Are you putting a ton of ketchup and mayonnaise? Are you having it on a white bun? You know, that's also something you wanna consider.Benji: In other words, fast food is fast food.It is interesting, 'cause, like, I look at this burger, and I'm like, I am healthier than the person next to me eating this with meat.Lisa: Yes, it might be healthier, but if you're eating this every day and the guy next to you is eating that beef burger once a month, who's really healthier?Benji: Now, of course, there are reasons other than personal health to choose veggie burgers. They have a smaller environmental footprint than beef, for example. And no cows were killed to make them. And if you are concerned about your health, just look for burgers with a short list of ingredients. Or, better yet, make them yourself.Nick Fernandez: I eat almost everything.
