The project has been sanctioned by the revenue wing of the Finance Ministry to develop ‘low THC’ varieties of marijiuana. The aim is to find varieties that can be exploited for industrial and horticulture use. "That is the source of biomass and fibre, and for the production of cannabis seed oil," stated the note issued by the Central Institute of Medicinal and Aromatic Plants (CIMAP). To fulfill that purpose, CIMAP will now grow marjiuana in Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh and Pantnagar, Uttarakhand. Industrial vs recreational use It should be noted that the recreational marijiana and industrial hemp are distinct strains of cannabis. Their petrochemical composition and uses are miles apart. India is studying ways to make protein-rich cooking oil from marijuana

It is sold at ₹315 per gram in Delhi and ₹329 per gram in Mumbai, which are one of the cheapest rates globally, the report highlighted. And, this is when the country has not yet legalised cannabis consumption. On the other hand, the US tops the charts with three cities featuring in the list. New York topped the chart for the highest intake of cannabis at 77.4 tons, followed by Karachi in Pakistan at 42 tons. Other US cities on the list are Los Angeles at 36 tons and Chicago at 24.5 tons. Other cities in the top 10 include Toronto, London, Cairo and Moscow. Having said that, Amsterdam where weed is legal ranks 56 on the list at merely 3.6 tons. Delhi and Mumbai ‘score’ high on weed consumption globally

Union Finance Minister <keyword id="129243" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="nirmala-sitharaman" source="Orion">Nirmala Sitharaman</keyword> on Monday asked enforcement agencies to up their vigil and go after big smugglers involved in drug trafficking and sending 'mountains' of illegal drugs into the country. Sitharaman said cocaine and other psychotropic drugs have started coming into <keyword id="3658" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="india" source="Orion">India</keyword> and the agencies need to figure out if the country is becoming a consuming country. She made the remarks while addressing the 65th Founding Day of the <keyword id="58154" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="directorate-of-revenue-intelligence" source="Orion">Directorate of Revenue Intelligence</keyword> here in the national capital on Monday. "DRI should make sure that smugglers are not smarter than you. Each one of these (smuggling) cases, at the earliest point of time, must come to the conclusion," said Sitharaman. She said arrest and prosecute the smugglers and the DRI must ensure that big handlers of such smuggling activities must face the law of the land. "There is a need to work hard and catch that sending a mountain of drugs. Need to greater access to a bilateral agreement with foreign countries as technology has enabled us to do things which earlier was not possible," Sitharaman remarked. The finance minister also made a suggestion to the DRI. She said that DRI, CBIC and Revenue department may start a two-day-long meet to see global cooperation. "Start a workshop with the cooperation of Intelligence agencies for better cooperation, get actionable intelligence to crack the smugglers," she said. Further, the finance minister said that India has got the Presidency of G-20 and the country must take this opportunity to organise a global meet where organisations like the Financial Action Task Force (FATF) should be called to see what kind of work they do and how that can help us to prevent smuggling. Separately, a comparative year-wise trend of NDPS seizures showed that there has been a sharp increase in the number of seizures of the items in India. In 2021-22, seizures of cocaine increased 3,479 per cent from 8.667 kg to 310.21 kg, an annual report produced by the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence said on Monday. In 2019-20, the seizure was 1.108 kg. For methamphetamine and heroin, the seizure increased by 1,281 per cent and 1,588 per cent to 884.69 kg and 3,410.71 kg, respectively, the report showed. Further, for ganja, data showed DRI made a maximum number of seizures of ganja in <keyword id="6355554" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="madhya-pradesh" source="Orion">Madhya Pradesh</keyword>, Tripura, <keyword id="6357713" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="uttar-pradesh" source="Orion">Uttar Pradesh</keyword>, Assam, and Maharashtra. First of its kind, the study titled ‘National Survey on Extent and Pattern of Substance Use in India’ was conducted across the country — including all states and union territories — interviewing over 500,000 people in India. The study had respondents between 10 to 75 years of age. Once signed, this convention also limits the manufacture, production, possession, use, trade, distribution, import and export of narcotic drugs, save for medical and scientific pursuits. 
 <keyword id="3658" type="COUNTRY" weightage="80" keywordseo="India">India</keyword>, under the tenure of Jawaharlal Nehru, the nation's first prime minister, to honour its obligations with the Convention on Psychotropic Substances and the United Nations Convention Against Illicit Traffic in Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances, signed the Single Convention on Narcotic Drugs at the United Nations Headquarters in New York on 30 March, 1961. And on 13 December, 1964 the treaty was ratified. However, international treaties or conventions were not going to clip the wings of India's holistic connection with marijuana. Just not yet. 
 When <keyword id="191987" type="PERSON" weightage="80" keywordseo="Ronald-Reagan">Ronald Reagan</keyword> became the 40th US president, his administration began twisting the arm of <keyword id="12596" type="PERSON" weightage="80" keywordseo="Rajiv-Gandhi">Rajiv Gandhi</keyword> to make marijuana illegal in India. Consequentially, in 1985, India established the Narcotics Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act (NDPS). Before this act, India could and was able to practically dance in the open about its consumption or sale of marijuana. 
 54 years before we had successfully negotiated with and had finally managed to ask the British to leave us their alphabet and take their letters and go back to where they came from, they were pretty impressed with our deep-rooted weed economics. So in 1893, the British appointed a joint study called '<keyword id="2885065" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="80" keywordseo="Indian-Hemp-Drugs-Commission">Indian Hemp Drugs Commission</keyword>' concerning the growth, manufacture, consumption, and social-cultural impacts from the intake of marijuana in any form.

What if Narendra Modi was pro marijuana! Ever imagined?

Rachakonda (Telangana) [India], August 12 (ANI): The <keyword id="20688831" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Telangana-Police" source="keywords">Telangana Police</keyword> on Monday busted an interstate <keyword id="20615789" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="drug-racket" source="keywords">drug racket</keyword>, arresting two men involved in the transportation of <keyword id="20535346" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="hash-oil" source="keywords">hash oil</keyword> at Pedda Amberpet in Telangana, the Rachakonda Police Commissionerate informed. In a coordinated operation, the Special Operations Team (SOT) from LB Nagar, along with the Hayath Nagar police, successfully apprehended the two <keyword id="21961620" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="interstate-drug" source="keywords">interstate drug</keyword> peddlers. The accused have been identified as 30-year-old Vanchurbha Konda Babu and 20-year-old Vanchurbha Balakrishna. The police seized 13.5 kilograms of hashish oil worth approximately Rs14 crores, Rs2,000 in cash, two mobile phones, packaging materials weighing about 1 kilogram, and other incriminating items from their possession. "The accused, Vanchurbha Konda Babu and Vanchurbha Balakrishna, are cousins and natives of Andhra Pradesh. They earn their livelihood through agricultural work. However, they became involved in this illicit drug trade to make easy money. The accused were procuring hashish oil from Andhra Pradesh and Odisha, transporting it, and selling it in the Bengaluru market, using Hyderabad as a transit route," the police stated. According to the police, during routine visits to a nearby cattle market in Annavaram, Alluri Seetharama Raju District, Vanchurbha Konda Babu befriended an individual who introduced him to the illicit drug trade, promising significant profits. Konda Babu, along with his cousin Balakrishna, who had previously been arrested by Vizag Police in a case related to the NDPS Act, agreed to participate in the illegal trade. The duo procured hash oil at a low cost and sold it to a receiver in Bengaluru for more than 10 times the purchase price, making significant profits, the police informed. On August 10, Konda Babu and Balakrishna procured the hash oil at Chaduru Mamidi Kondalu, located 15 kilometers from their village, and traveled to the outskirts of Hyderabad after receiving an order for 14 kilograms of hash oil from a Bengaluru-based buyer. Telangana: Drugs worth ₹14 crore seized, two arrested in operation by police

<ul><li>This startup promises relief to those suffering from nicotine addiction, Parkinsons, chronic pain and <keyword id="15418" type="General" weightage="70" keywordseo="anxiety" source="Orion">anxiety</keyword> with its <keyword id="14728" type="General" weightage="70" keywordseo="cannabis" source="Orion">cannabis</keyword> laced products.</li><li>More than 50 plus startups have mushroomed in India over the last two years after the FSSAI allowed sale of <keyword id="1957434" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="hemp" source="Orion">hemp</keyword> seed or hemp seed oil as food or ingredients in food.</li><li>Cannabidiol found in hemp products is not a psychoactive substance that gives a “high”. <keyword id="6607408" type="General" weightage="90" keywordseo="cbd" source="Orion">CBD</keyword> has medicinal properties and can be used as therapy for many ailments. </li></ul> If you are looking to kick the butt, but are finding it hard to do so, you may consider switching to “hemp rollens” – cigarettes made from cannabis leaves and flowers. And it is perfectly legal. Trost, a two-year old startup, sells a variety of products made from cannabis that promise to give relief from epilepsy, chronic pain, anxiety and even autoimmune disorders. Says Harshal Goel, Founder of Trost, a startup that produces therapeutic products derived from hemp extracts, “Cannabidiol or CBD has a plethora of benefits because it has medicinal benefits. From epilepsy to Parkinsons, CBD can help people. It also helps to manage chronic pain.” Not surprising that he has named his startup Trost – which means solace in German. Today, consumers can find solace in CBD laced chocolates and protein powders too. In 2021, the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India issued a notification that said hemp seed, hemp seed oil and hemp seed flour could be sold as food or used as an ingredient in food products provided that they conformed to stipulated standards. Following which startups are now selling hemp-based protein powders too and not just hemp-based herbal cigarettes. Ayurvedic blend of potent herbs The concept of hemp cigarettes is rooted in "Dhuma Yoga," an Ayurvedic blend of five potent herbs including cannabis, datura, henbane, vasa, and cavya - to create a distinct form of smoke therapy called Dhumapana. According to Trost, burning these herbs creates smoke that the user inhales and exhales through their nose and mouth. According to some ayurveda aficionados, this therapy can enhance respiratory health. It is not just in India that CBD is becoming acceptable. The future of cannabis was also discussed at the World Economic Forum in 2020. Traditionally, cannabis has been seen as a means of getting “high”, but researchers have also found medicinal use cases of the plant, provided the presence of psychoactive substance THC is negligible. Hemp should not be confused with <keyword id="40905" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="marijuana" source="Orion">marijuana</keyword> as it also contains negligible amounts of THC (tetrahydrocannabinol), which gives a “high.” Consumption of hemp flowers and extracts like CBD oil or hemp seed oil are legal in India, provided they do not contain 0.3% of THC. In 2018, Uttrakhand legalised its production and soon Uttar Pradesh followed suit. In April 2023, the state government of Himachal Pradesh also decided to legalise the cultivation of cannabis to boost the local economy. The Ministry of AYUSH is also issuing licences to startups that want to offer CBD products as cures for a variety of ailments. To buy these products, you need to have a prescription from an ayurvedic doctor. Like Trost, most of the startups have mushroomed in the last few years. In 2017, Harshal Goel, then a student at City University, London, learned about Switzerland's legalisation of low-THC cannabis. Intrigued, he visited Switzerland to explore the plant's potential and legal framework. Inspired by the innovation around cannabis products like chocolates and creams, Goel launched medicinal herbal hemp cigarettes in Switzerland. After seeing the success of his venture in Switzerland, he returned to India and founded Trost to offer natural, plant-based products as therapies. If you have recently visited Thailand, you must’ve noticed cannabis shops sprouting like wild weed. The country decriminalised marijuana or ganja in June 2022 and it has given its economy, which is heavily dependent on tourism, a big boost. The decriminalisation, like in many states in the US, was first done in 2018 for medical purposes. Hemp rollens or herbal cigarettes is its most popular product because it helps smokers kick the butt, even though the experience of smoking rollens is very different from a tobacco cigarette. But Trost may be the future of the likes of tobacco majors like ITC. The promise of this pudding can be gauged from the $650 mn that Philip Morris, a global tobacco major, is committing to acquire a cannabis company based in Israel. According to reports in July 2023, Philip Morris is close to acquiring <keyword id="1609269" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="medical-marijuana" source="Orion">medical marijuana</keyword> inhaler maker, Syqe Medical, for $650 mn. This would not be the first investment Philip Morris has made in the company as it has earlier invested $20 mn in a company that offered metered inhaler doses of medical marijuana for pain management. Fastest growing plant on the planet Cannabidiol may be new to India, but cannabis is not. In fact, leaves of the female cannabis plant is known as “bhang” which is also offered to Lord Shiva. But startups like Trost are not offering that kind of solace. Trost is a D2C startup that not only offers CBD based therapies but also sells tobacco-free rollens made from cannabis Not only do these cigarettes help deal with nicotine addiction, it also promises to calm the nerves and have a relaxing effect. Industrial hemp is a botanical class of cannabis, which is often used in medicines to relieve anxiety, <keyword id="23666" type="General" weightage="70" keywordseo="stress" source="Orion">stress</keyword> and pain. No wonder, apart from bamboo, hemp is the fastest growing plant on the planet. Interestingly, hemp also contains THC but not in the same quantity as marijuana does. While Trost may be promising solace to a post-pandemic world where anxiety and stress are as common as cold and flu, these hemp startups cannot advertise. To create more awareness around their products, they are even looking at offline stores. Hemp and cannabis startups like Trost, Boheco, Happie Herb, Cannary, Wildleaf and Oreka are members of an industry body called Pan India Medical Cannabis and Hemp Association (PIMCHA) to educate governments on the benefits of medicinal cannabis and root for the industry’s cause through legal reforms.

The magistrates court granted bail to the couple on a bond of Rs 15,000 each. On Sunday, they were produced before the magistrate's court which remanded them in judicial custody till December 4. The couple then filed bail pleas through their advocate Ayaz Khan which were posted for hearing on Monday. The NCB recovered 86.5 gm ganja during the search at the couple's residence and office. This is considered as 'small quantity' under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act. 'No mask, no vegetables', say vendors in Tripura amid COVID-19 scare

New Delhi, Oct 20 (IANS) Even as the drugs smuggled from foreign countries concealed in different items have posed a huge challenge for the Customs Department and other agencies, the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) has been sharing the latest modus operandi of the smugglers with various agencies to keep a check on them. The NCB, which is the nodal agency for checking drug smuggling from foreign countries, has busted several such rackets in the last few months. The agency has intercepted several drug consignments concealed in an air compressor machine, in metal piston (spare part), stuffed in tailoring material among several others. Commenting on the new modus operandi of the drug smugglers, NCB Deputy Director K.P. Malhotra told IANS, "NCB being the nodal drug law enforcement agency shares the new modus operandi with other agencies to keep a tab on drug trafficking and to step up vigilance at various levels." Another NCB official said that the agency shares the latest modus operandi of the international as well as national drug smugglers with other agencies, on the basis of its investigations. He said the NCB shares information including how the contraband is smuggled to India after being concealed in different items, the method of payment and how orders are made. In the last three months, the NCB on the basis of specific information seized several drug parcels, dealing a big blow to the smuggling racket which has been posing a threat to the country. On the basis of information, the NCB seized a parcel sent to India from the US on August 31 from DHL couriers in Delhi. On September 18, it arrested C. Gidwani from Lucknow. According to the officials, the parcel was found to contain 2.7 kg premium quality marijuana from the US, concealed in an "air compressor machine". During the NCB probe, it was revealed that Gidwani ordered the drugs from the US through Instagram or Wickr and the payment was made through bitcoins. The NCB got hold of the drug consignment as it came to know that the consignor was based in the US. The NCB officials said that a few earlier seizures made by the agency had the same point of origin which alerted them. Similarly, the NCB on October 16 intercepted a parcel in Pune's Lonavala post office and seized 1,036 gram of curated marijuana or "ganja". During the probe, the NCB seized 74 grams of curated marijuana from Navi Mumbai and arrested two persons -- Shrimay Shah, a resident of Ahmedabad and Omkar Tupe, a resident of Navi Mumbai. According to the NCB officials, the source of the seized contraband was Canada and it was destined for Mumbai and Ahmedabad. The NCB also busted a drug syndicate being run by Afghan nationals in India. A total of 380 gram of premium quality Afghan heroin was seized by arresting four Afghan nationals involved in the racket. A NCB official said the heroin was seized from DHL Couriers in Delhi on September 29, which was concealed in a metal piston. The consignment was shipped from Afghanistan and was destined for Delhi. "The contraband was concealed in a special cavity made inside a metal piston," the official said, adding that further investigation in the case resulted in the arrest of four Afghan refugees staying in Delhi. The NCB probe revealed that the arrested Afghan nationals were indulging in drug trafficking in the guise of language interpreters. "They used to get instructions from their handler or the drug kingpin, who is based in Afghanistan to collect parcels and hand it over to the next channel. The kingpin had created multiple layers in the delivery network and the person handing over the parcel did not know the identity of the next one," the official said. In a similar fashion, the NCB seized 670 gm of cocaine at Delhi on September 19, while the accused was arrested from Mumbai. The NCB said that the contraband was concealed in a parcel containing 'tailoring material', especially in thread rolls. During the NCB probe, it was found that the contraband was sourced from Addis Ababa in Ethiopia. The NCB in September also busted an international drug racket by arresting eight people, including two African nationals and one Burmese national along with the kingpin of the drug syndicate and seized around eight kg of heroin, 455 gram cocaine and 1.1 kg premium quality marijuana. The NCB claimed that a follow up investigation revealed that around 52 kg of contraband has been trafficked by the syndicate in the last few months in India.
