She opens up about her recent breakup and how it was difficult for her to move on and find happiness again. A <keyword id="228307" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="motivational-speaker" source="Orion">motivational speaker</keyword>, who claims to have ‘failed and surged in search of success and happiness,’ tells her to give herself a pep talk. He says, “You can look at one problem through different perspectives. If you dislike someone in your family, ignore their flaws. Train your mind to look at their positive attributes instead. In your mind, not on the outside, look at the world's problems lightly. Be a warrior from the outside and a monk on the inside.” These motivational speakers, with no formal degree in mental health, aim to guide their audience through all challenges in their life ranging from mental illness, relationship advice, and financial advice on how to become rich. They claim to have “risen above the rat race” and have challenged the age-old myth of “life is tough.” Much like Viru Shahastrabuddhe of the Bollywood movie “3 Idiots”, for motivational speakers, “Life is a race. If you don’t run fast, you will be like a broken anda (egg).” <div type="image" title="Life_is_a_race_वायरस_आया_अंडे_लेके__3_Idiots__Boman_Irani_A" msid="90731324" hostid="261"></div> So, they ask their audiences to live and breathe by <a href="https://www.forbes.com/sites/celinnedacosta/2019/04/28/stop-idolizing-hustle-culture-and-do-this-instead/?sh=5ab86ea033cb">hustle culture</a>, which is about grinding away, working harder, stronger and faster, and even sacrificing your sleep for work. This sleep-deprived race to attain power, money and success, comes at a cost. It can put your mental health and <a href="https://www.webmd.com/heart/news/20170911/the-health-risks-of-long-work-weeks">physical </a>health at risk. Growing movement against hustle culture on the internet However, anti-capitalism memes and videos are taking over Instagram and <a href="https://www.reddit.com/r/antiwork/">Reddit </a>to counter hustle culture. Internet users across the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/policy/economy/news/anti-capitalism-is-flooding-tiktok-as-young-people-question-a-life-that-prioritizes-productivity-over-well-being/articleshow/89870972.cms">world </a>are calling out motivational speakers for promoting hustle culture and for the toll it takes on their mental health. A community on Reddit called ‘<a href="https://www.reddit.com/r/antiwork/">anti-work</a>’ with 1.9 million members is also aimed at calling out <keyword id="6497689" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="capitalism" source="Orion">capitalism</keyword>. Their recent post about hoping to see American socialite Kim Kardashian work for minimum wage got more than 108,000 votes. <div type="image" title="reddit meme" msid="90731419" hostid="261"></div> Closer home, Mumbai-based Md Anas, a comedian and content creator, has made many parodies of motivational speakers. In one of his popular parodies, which was recently picked by a <a href="https://www.instagram.com/tv/CbT_MsTr9Sv/?utm_medium=copy_link">media </a>platform, he denounced motivational speakers and their glorification of hustle culture. Words like ‘motivation’ and ‘hustle’ only worked for him back in the day, he says. While he loves creating content and making people laugh, and that drives him to work hard, he has dissociated himself from the hustle culture. “One major problem with motivational content I believe is that it comes across as privilege deaf. Saying something like you have the same amount of time as a billionaire refutes the idea of physical, financial and mental struggles that people go through. Having said that, a lot of people looking for answers will find solace in general motivation, particularly teenagers or early college-goers,” says Anas. Psychotherapist Rhea Gandhi recently took to <a href="https://www.instagram.com/p/CbzskWIs2Ng/?utm_medium=copy_link">Instagram </a>to explain why people are instantly demotivated when they hear the word ‘motivation.’ “The pop psychology narratives around motivation on the internet are exhausting: motivational speakers, motivational quotes, motivational videos and the list goes on and on and on. Hustle culture makes us believe that motivation needs to be constant or something is wrong with us. It doesn't allow us space to be human, to grieve, to love, to stand still. It makes us believe we should always be moving. But motivation is an inside job. It’s illuminated when we stand still and reflect. It is in stillness and relationships that we can see ourselves. Find our own resources. External tools last days, if not minutes.” She added that we feel inspired when we look within, instead of following society's ideas of what we 'should' do. Budding content creator and stand-up comedian Soniya Kalyani, who gave up her corporate job to pursue content creation, didn’t appreciate unsolicited advice that came from people around her and on the internet. “Coming from a middle-class background, I have seen so many people bombarding me with advice on ‘do this, do that.’ But the reality is I don't need the gyan (advice). I lack the resources to execute [my ideas] and access to connections, which amplifies your growth much faster.” Ergo, she feels that motivational speakers should stay away from the topics they don’t understand or try walking in their audience’s shoes. Kalyani was on the brink of burnout when she decided to take a break. She says that the words ‘motivation’ and ‘hustle’ have developed negative connotations because social media portrays that you are supposed to feel motivated and hustle constantly. “I don't believe in the word motivation. You have to train yourself to be disciplined. While trying to discipline myself, I did face severe burnout twice. Now, if I feel I am on the brink, I take a break and I go a little easy on myself. Trying to show up every day sometimes gets exhausting, so I allow myself to rest.” As of April 10, 2022, there are more than 29 million posts with #hustle on Instagram, #hustlehard has attracted 4.3 million posts and #sleepisfortheweak has seen more than 226K posts. On why the word motivation has become demotivating for internet users, Life coach Sidhharrth S Kumaar says, “The word ‘motivation’ has transformed itself to be demotivating due to the pressure of following a blind race in all situations and circumstances. This blind chase of motivation or motivational speakers, infuses a thought in mind that everyone is the same, and we need to perform and be supercharged in all situations and this, in turn, leads to performance anxiety and stress causing irrecoverable losses in life.” Does the internet’s popular hustle culture have consequences? According to Microsoft's work trend index <a href="https://news.microsoft.com/en-in/close-to-one-third-of-workers-in-india-face-increased-burnout-at-work/">report</a>, which surveyed over 6,000 employees across eight countries in October 2020, India had the second-highest percentage of workers facing increased burnout among Asian countries at 29%. India also came out on top with over 41% of workers citing the lack of separation between work and personal life as negatively impacting their well-being, resulting in increased stress levels. While hustling for some is a matter of survival, the constant need to achieve ‘more’ has become an obsession on the internet. Dr. Jyoti Kapoor, founder of mental health and wellness service Manasthali and senior psychiatrist, says that while motivational speakers have their hearts in the right place, the state of mind of the person who is listening may or may not be receptive at that point in time. “If we are being forcefully motivated when we are already feeling overwhelmed or exhausted, we may associate our feeling of helplessness to the motivational argument itself, thereby developing a negative reaction. It also happens in relaxation exercises, if they are started when a patient is too anxious, they become more anxious while trying to do the exercise to relax,” explains Dr. Kapoor. A World Health Organization <a href="https://www.who.int/news/item/02-03-2022-covid-19-pandemic-triggers-25-increase-in-prevalence-of-anxiety-and-depression-worldwide">report </a>released in March 2022 painted a rather grim picture. The health body said that the COVID-19 pandemic led to a 25% jump in anxiety and depression cases across the world. It went on to say that more than 300 million people around the world suffer from depression, which is the leading cause of workplace disability. It estimates that depression and anxiety disorders cost the global economy around $ 1 trillion each year in lost productivity. Did the global pandemic give a push to the anti-hustle movement on the internet? During several lockdowns that country went through, it almost felt like someone was telling you to push even harder on social media. Avantika Mohan, a lifestyle content creator, who says she is guilty of talking about the hustle culture in the past, now feels that ‘what works for her doesn’t necessarily have to work for anyone else.’ The problem with hustle culture, she says, lies with the idea that everyone has the same 24 hours in a day. “While everyone has the same amount of time, it is important to understand that everyone does not have the same resources or even the same end goals,” she declares. Adding how the dislike toward motivational speakers grew after the lockdown, Mohan says, “The pandemic saw a huge shift in how people perceive hustle and that was a push towards the aversion to motivational speakers because of the worry of a future that came with the pandemic. A huge reason for this aversion was constantly being ‘motivated’ by someone to give our best. Someone who is a stranger, someone behind a screen and someone who does not have the same struggles as us. Most motivational speakers talk about seizing every second and every opportunity only to not factor in the individual struggles and the lack of resources and that hustle is not the only way to grow, or earn respect.” Kerala-based parenthood and lifestyle content creator, Nuziha (@nuzihajmal), feels that the pressure to constantly hustle became too much for her after the pandemic. “The school of thought about working hard to achieve the best results never says only work hard. Hard work, even if done for a few hours, with sincerity and discipline can yield the best results. This school of thought was quickly replaced by motivational speakers talking about bringing a hustle culture to life. This increased even more during the pandemic with people being constantly told to do more with their time since we were all in lockdown.” Nuziha’s partner Ajmal points out that each journey is different. “Our work demands us to be constantly online and we see a lot of creators and motivational speakers on Instagram talking about how being always hands-on at work is the only way to bring success. However, it is important to understand before preaching that the struggles of everyday life differ from person to person.” After the pandemic, if there’s one good thing that happened, is that personal lives took more precedence over jobs and the growing movement against hustle culture in India is just the beginning. In the US, 65% of <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/labor-shortage-slow-up-great-reshuffle-gen-z-demands-workplace-2021-11">Gen Z</a> is planning to leave their job this year and join the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/careers/news/heres-everything-we-know-about-the-great-resignation-whos-quitting-and-why/articleshow/86429516.cms">Great Resignation</a>. Why motivation is becoming a negative word on the internet

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Megan Gottschall, 36, is a senior <keyword id="14728" type="ENTERTAINMENT" weightage="100" keywordseo="cannabis">cannabis</keyword> trimmer based in Μuncy, <keyword id="106037" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="Pennsylvania">Pennsylvania</keyword>. She leads the cannabis trimming team at the Danville plant of <keyword id="10432165" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="green-thumb-industries">Green Thumb Industries</keyword> (GTI), a national producer and retailer.</li><li>Pennsylvania legalized the use of medical cannabis for the treatment of 17 medical conditions in 2016, and has since <a href="https://www.pa.gov/guides/pennsylvania-medical-marijuana-program/">expanded coverage</a> to 23 conditions total.</li><li>Gottschall has first-hand experience with the benefits of medical cannabis, having seen the difference it makes to her mother who suffers from an auto-immune disease.</li><li>Although she says she gets dirty looks when people ask what she does for work, Gottschall says she's proud to combat the undeserved stigma around cannabis and work in an industry that helps people.</li><li>This is what her job is like, as told to freelance writer Alex Katsomitros.</li></ul>When I joined Green Thumb in June 2019, I knew virtually nothing about cannabis. Previously I'd worked for Sam's Club for 15 years, 12 of which as a supervisor in the meat section. I wanted to move on, and a former colleague told me about <a href="https://www.gtigrows.com/">GTI</a>. The long-term career prospects attracted me, and I liked the idea of doing work that can really help people. Cannabis is a unique industry to work in as it's still new and has a bad reputation in some circles, so there is an unwanted and undeserved stigma. I see it as part of my job to "bridge" that stigma, because I've seen how medical cannabis can help people. To me it's very personal, because my mum has an auto-immune disease. I watch her suffer every day, so being able to help her get a <keyword id="1609269" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="medical-marijuana">medical marijuana</keyword> card and show her what products to choose is very meaningful for me.<h2>At the plant, I oversee the trimming process that gets the flower 'customer ready.'</h2>There is a lengthy process of the plants growing, getting harvested, and then broken down into manageable pieces. Next, my team's process starts with the trimming stages.In the morning, I set up the trimming rooms and oversee the various stages of mechanical trimming. This has nothing to do with pruning, which is all done on the grow side. When the flower comes to me, it is still in a very raw state. The machines remove between 40% and 70% of excess leaves and stems thus aiding in the efficiency of the manual trim process.Then the difficult part starts: trimming all of the excess parts by hand. As production lead in the trim area, I make sure the necessary raw flower quantity is distributed in the production rooms, that trimmers stay on task, and that the machines run smoothly. I am a stickler for quality - what we produce is someone's medication, so we take the production process very seriously. I also do a bit of clerical work, because everything is regulated and we have to be extremely careful about what goes out in and out of the rooms. Precise paperwork is kept on every strain during every stage of our process. For my part, I keep track of material that moves in and out of the trim rooms. I also keep track of what stage the material is in: Is it ready to machine trim, is it ready to hand trim, is it ready to batch? As the flower is done processing, I return it to the vault and retrieve more product to run. I also manage the paperwork, work on extra projects, write reviews, and plan meeting that come with being the production lead of the trim process.These days I am doing less and less trimming myself compared to when I started. When you join a cannabis producer, you usually get moved around. I started out as packaging and processing specialist, which involved a lot of trimming and packaging flower. Occasionally, I still sit down and trim - it's nice to keep a connection with the people you lead. It's hard to guide people towards a direction when you don't know the direction yourself.<h2>To be a good trimmer, you need to have patience, dexterity, and mental acuity. </h2>It's not a laborious task, but it takes mental stamina to sit at the trimming table all day. The secret of good trimming is to get it off your hands as fast as possible. Everyone at the facility wears gloves whenever flower or finished products are being handled. They don't apply pressure when holding the buds, so no damage is done. We used to listen to music as a group, but different people have different tastes, so now everyone listens to whatever they like with headphones. Some like music, others prefer podcasts. Personally, I listen to Florence and the Machine albums over and over again. Technology is at the heart of the industry. There is only so far a machine can go, eventually you have to finish the job by hand to have quality product. At GTI, I feel more accepted than I have ever been in my life. I'm gay, I have a wife, and at the plant I've never felt that I have to hide any part of who I am. It's a breath of fresh air.The pandemic hasn't affected my job that much. We're considered an essential business because we produce medicine, so we've stayed open throughout the shutdowns. We clean regularly, and make sure that social distancing is respected in common areas. I'm grateful to have this sense of security, knowing that I have a job to go to, in a time where almost everything else feels uncertain.I felt that college wasn't right for me, so I dropped out and jumped straight to work. My job does not define me, but it reflects who I am. When I go home I feel not just pride, but a sense of purpose too. "When you can drive home the point that clean, neat and simple is as elite as pricey and rare, people want it better. Minimalist living is about being present, satisfied, and on top of the game."

Minimalism is about 'giving back to the society'. Yes, point noted. Remember <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Nelson+Mandela">Nelson Mandela</a>, Mahatma Gandhi or even the recent Dalai Lama? Now juxtapose them against any rich brat you have known, and see who would you choose to rub shoulders with, in the long run. 
 
What is important to know is minimalistic living is about practicing your mind power over your will power. Remember that story about a good wolf and a bad wolf living inside you, and the one that grows will be the one that you feed? Well, if not as black and white as good and bad, minimalistic living is about feeding the demon inside you or the angel. Minimalistic living will not only help you strengthen your will power, but help you become a person of conviction who cannot be easily influenced. This cannot be achieved even by climbing the corporate ladder and sitting on the high chair. 
 
Breaking the cycle of wanting is difficult to begin with. But once you set it in motion you can easily understand why the quote says 'rolling stones gather no moss'. Living frugal is empowering. It's the real meaning of freedom, if you choose to get there.

Specifically she explores how where we land on the introvert-extrovert spectrum influences our choices, friends, conversations, careers, success, and even love. "It governs how likely we are to exercise, commit adultery, function well without sleep, learn from our mistakes, place big bets in the stock market, delay gratification, be a good leader, and ask "what if."
It's also one of the most exhaustively researched subjects. It's not just scientists who've contemplated this, they are a rather recent addition. Poets and Philosophers have been "thinking about introverts and extroverts since the dawn of recorded time."

"[T]oday we make room for a remarkably narrow range of personality styles. We're told that to be great is to be bold, to be happy is to be sociable. We see ourselves as a nation of extroverts - which means that we've lost sight of who we really are. Depending on which study you consult, one third to one half of Americans are introverts - in other words, one out of every two or three people you know."

Surprising? That's because most introverts, like myself, pretend to be extroverts. I'm what you call a "closet introvert."

"It makes sense that so many introverts hide even from themselves. We live with a value system that I call the Extrovert Ideal - the omnipresent belief that the ideal self is gregarious, alpha, and comfortable in the spotlight. The archetypal extrovert prefers action to contemplation, risk-taking to heed-taking, certainty to doubt. He favors quick decisions, even at the risk of being wrong. She works well in teams and socializes in groups. We like to think that we value individuality, but all too often we admire one type of individual- the kind who's comfortable "putting himself out there."

"Introversion - along with its cousins sensitivity, seriousness, and shyness - is now a second-class personality trait, somewhere between a disappointment and a pathology."

The extrovert ideal is alive and well.
<blockquote>
"Talkative people, for example, are rated as smarter, better-looking, more interesting, and more desirable as friends. Velocity of speech counts as well as volume: we rank fast talkers as more competent and likable than slow ones. The same dynamics apply in groups, where research shows that the voluble are considered smarter than the reticent - even though there's zero correlation between the gift of gab and good ideas."

But, like anything, it's a mistake to embrace this ideal without thinking. Without introverts, we wouldn't have: the theory of gravity, the theory of relativity, Chopin's nocturnes, Proust's In Search of Lost Time, Peter Pan, Orwell's 1984, The Cat in the Hat, Charlie Brown, Schindler's List, E.T., Google, Harry Potter, or Farnam Street.
In "<a href="http://a-fwd.com/es=farstrblo068-21&amp;it=farstrblo0a-21&amp;fr=farstrblo08-21&amp;de=farstrblo07-21&amp;uk=farstrblo-21&amp;ca=farst-20&amp;com=farnamstreet-20&amp;asin-es=0679430180&amp;asin-it=0679430180&amp;asin-fr=0679430180&amp;asin-de=0679430180&amp;asin-uk=0679430180&amp;asin-ca=0679430180&amp;asin-com=0679430180" target="_blank">How Heredity and Experience Make You Who You Are</a>," the science journalist Winifred Gallagher writes: "The glory of the disposition that stops to consider stimuli rather than rushing to engage with them is its long association with intellectual and artistic achievement. Neither E=mc2 nor Paradise Lost was dashed off by a party animal."
Cain argues that it is not in spite of introversion that people like Eleanor Roosevelt, Al Gore, Warren Buffett, Gandhi and Rosa Parks achieve what they do, but, in part, because of it.
As society moves unconsciously toward an extroverted world - one of open offices, team everything, and organizations that value "people skills" above competence - introverts will have to adjust. But things like creativity and "innovation" will suffer.
If you're an introvert:

"you might still feel a pang of guilt when you decline a dinner invitation in favor of a good book. Or maybe you like to eat alone in restaurants and could do without the pitying looks from fellow diners. Or you're told that you're "in your head too much," a phrase that's often deployed against the quiet and cerebral."
Of course, there's another word for such people: thinkers."

After taking my MBTI, one of my professors defined introversion as "where you get your energy." If you're extroverted you get energy from being around people, and if you're introverted you get it from being alone. But is there more to it than that? What exactly does it mean to say someone is introverted?
In 1921, psychologist Carl Jung had published a book, "<a href="http://a-fwd.com/es=farstrblo068-21&amp;it=farstrblo0a-21&amp;fr=farstrblo08-21&amp;de=farstrblo07-21&amp;uk=farstrblo-21&amp;ca=farst-20&amp;com=farnamstreet-20&amp;asin-es=0691018138&amp;asin-it=0691018138&amp;asin-fr=0691018138&amp;asin-de=0691018138&amp;asin-uk=0691018138&amp;asin-ca=0691018138&amp;asin-com=0691018138" target="_blank">Psychological Types</a>," that popularized the terms introvert and extrovert as the foundation of personality.
Discussing Jung's work, Cain writes:

"Introverts are drawn to the inner world of thought and feeling, said Jung, extroverts to the external life of people and activities. Introverts focus on the meaning they make of the events swirling around them; extroverts plunge into the events themselves. Introverts recharge their batteries by being alone; extroverts need to recharge when they don't socialize enough."

The MBTI is based on Jung's work. But, you should know, there is no consensus on any of this. There are "almost as many definitions of introverts and extroverts as there are personality psychologists, who spend a great deal of time arguing over which meaning is most accurate."
<blockquote>
"Still, today's psychologists tend to agree on several important points: for example, that introverts and extroverts differ in the level of outside stimulation that they need to function well. Introverts feel "just right" with less stimulation, as when they sip wine with a close friend, solve a crossword puzzle, or read a book. Extroverts enjoy the extra bang that comes from activities like meeting new people, skiing slippery slopes, and cranking up the stereo."

"(Introverts) prefer to devote their social energies to close friends, colleagues, and family. They listen more than they talk, think before they speak, and often feel as if they express themselves better in writing than in conversation. They tend to dislike conflict. Many have a horror of small talk, but enjoy deep discussions."

Whenever I tell someone I'm introverted the first thing they inevitably say is "you can't be an introvert. You're not shy."
<blockquote>
"Shyness is the fear of social disapproval or humiliation, while introversion is a preference for environments that are not overstimulating. Shyness is inherently painful; introversion is not. One reason that people confuse the two concepts is that they sometimes overlap (though psychologists debate to what degree)."

The bus to Abilene Here is one particularly amusing anecdote from the book: "The bus to Abilene." And this applies to everything from meetings to how we make decisions.

"A well-known study out of UC Berkeley by organizational behavior professor Philip Tetlock found that television pundits - that is, people who earn their livings by holding forth confidently on the basis of limited information - make worse predictions about political and economic trends than they would by random chance. And the very worst prognosticators tend to be the most famous and the most confident - the very ones who would be considered natural leaders in an HBS classroom.
The U.S. Army has a name for a similar phenomenon: "the Bus to Abilene." "Any army officer can tell you what that means," Colonel (Ret.) Stephen J. Gerras, a professor of behavioral sciences at the U.S. Army War College, told Yale Alumni Magazine in 2008. "It's about a family sitting on a porch in Texas on a hot summer day, and somebody says, 'I'm bored. Why don't we go to Abilene?' When they get to Abilene, somebody says, 'You know, I didn't really want to go.' And the next person says, 'I didn't want to go - I thought you wanted to go,' and so on. Whenever you're in an army group and somebody says, 'I think we're all getting on the bus to Abilene here,' that is a red flag. You can stop a conversation with it. It is a very powerful artifact of our culture."
The "Bus to Abilene" anecdote reveals our tendency to follow those who initiate action-any action.

Innovation A lot of organizations want to encourage <a href="http://www.farnamstreetblog.com/2013/11/your-organization-sucks-at-innovating/" target="_blank">innovation with "positive" action</a>. They hold up Google, Twitter, and Kickstarter as models of innovation. In a well-meaning attempt to encourage innovation they inevitably come up with a process that relies on presentation skills to sift ideas.
In his book "<a href="http://a-fwd.com/es=farstrblo068-21&amp;it=farstrblo0a-21&amp;fr=farstrblo08-21&amp;de=farstrblo07-21&amp;uk=farstrblo-21&amp;ca=farst-20&amp;com=farnamstreet-20&amp;asin-es=1422133303&amp;asin-it=1422133303&amp;asin-fr=1422133303&amp;asin-de=1422133303&amp;asin-uk=1422133303&amp;asin-ca=1422133303&amp;asin-com=1422133303" target="_blank">Iconoclast</a>," neuroeconomist Gregory Berns explores what happens when companies rely too heavily on presentation skills to sift ideas. "He describes a software company called Rite-Solutions," Cain writes summarizing his work, "that successfully asks employees to share ideas through an online 'idea market,' as a way of focusing on substance rather than style."

(In Quiet Cain describes the company) Joe Marino, president of Rite-Solutions, and Jim Lavoie, CEO of the company, created this system as a reaction to problems they'd experienced elsewhere. "In my old company," Lavoie told Berns, "if you had a great idea, we would tell you , 'OK, we'll make an appointment for you to address the murder board' " - a group of people charged with vetting new ideas. Marino described what happened next:

Of course questions are asked of that person that they don't know. Like, "How big's the market? What's your marketing approach? What's your business plan for this? What's the product going to cost?" It's embarrassing. Most people can't answer those kinds of questions. The people who made it through these boards were not the people with the best ideas. They were the best presenters.

In his memoir, "<a href="http://a-fwd.com/es=farstrblo068-21&amp;it=farstrblo0a-21&amp;fr=farstrblo08-21&amp;de=farstrblo07-21&amp;uk=farstrblo-21&amp;ca=farst-20&amp;com=farnamstreet-20&amp;asin-es=0393330435&amp;asin-it=0393330435&amp;asin-fr=0393330435&amp;asin-de=0393330435&amp;asin-uk=0393330435&amp;asin-ca=0393330435&amp;asin-com=0393330435" target="_blank">iWoz: Computer Geek to Cult Icon: How I Invented the Personal Computer, Co-Founded Apple, and Had Fun Doing It</a>," Steve Wozniak writes:

"Most inventors and engineers I've met are like me - they're shy and they live in their heads. They're almost like artists. In fact, the very best of them are artists. And artists work best alone where they can control an invention's design without a lot of other people designing it for marketing or some other committee. I don't believe anything really revolutionary has been invented by committee. If you're that rare engineer who's an inventor and also an artist, I'm going to give you some advice that might be hard to take. That advice is: Work alone. You're going to be best able to design revolutionary products and features if you're working on your own. Not on a committee. Not on a team."

Of course introverts are not necessarily more creative. The most creative or innovative people tend to <a href="http://www.farnamstreetblog.com/2013/12/the-five-skills-of-disruptive-innovators/" target="_blank">ask questions</a>, display a healthy disrespect for authority, a natural irreverence, and a stubborn streak. This suggests they may not work well as part of a team.
In explaining why introverts have a creative advantage, Cain writes:
<blockquote>
"[T]here's a less obvious yet surprisingly powerful explanation for introverts' creative advantage - an explanation that everyone can learn from: introverts prefer to work independently, and solitude can be a catalyst to innovation. As the influential psychologist Hans Eysenck once observed, introversion "concentrates the mind on the tasks in hand, and prevents the dissipation of energy on social and sexual matters unrelated to work."
</blockquote>
In the end, creativity and innovation in organizations is about accepting and even encouraging differences. I'd caution organizations not to move too far towards the extroversion end of the spectrum (open offices, everything done in teams, promoting based on social skills above competence) without giving consideration to the effects that may have on some of your most creative people. A lot of things are better done by individuals than teams. It's ok to have offices. It's ok to have quiet. It doesn't work for everyone but it works for some of your best and possibly most misunderstood employees.
