"In the worst case, we are supercharging technologies of discrimination."This has led to widespread calls for limitations and even regulations around AI. It's rare for leaders from both camps to agree, meaning that the only real question now is what form these rules and regulations will take. Ultimately, experts agree that this is a necessary step for the nascent AI industry to truly thrive."Regulating AI comes down to what kind of future we want, one where there's surveillance using flawed technology, or do we want to limit those potential bad actors," Lieu told Insider in a recent interview.<h2>The AI industry welcomes regulation</h2>Tech industry insiders say that AI regulation is a prudent step to helping make sure that the technology can be brought to the mass market in a sustainable, responsible way. Some suggest that if America had taken the same approach to social media earlier in its lifespan, companies like Facebook and Twitter wouldn't have caused quite as much potential harm — or found themselves in as much political trouble — down the line."If you think about how social media bubbles that created a lot of change in our electoral landscape worldwide, had we regulated those industries earlier on, could we have seen something different?" asked Triveni Gandhi, responsible AI lead at startup Dataiku. She says that "there is a strong need for regulators to step in because those kinds of companies aren't going to self-regulate."While the tech industry has historically viewed regulation as harmful to innovation, supporters of rules for AI point to the many instances where strict rules have helped technologies flourish. Lieu pointed to the auto industry as an example of an industry that's flourished under strict regulatory guardrails. Cars have become safer and stronger because of safety policies, and electric vehicles only got better after environmental standards pushed automakers to find fuel alternatives. Calls for AI regulation are not limited to policymakers and researchers. Even the makers of ChatGPT see themselves working with regulators to bring AI technologies to the mass market responsibly: Murati, the <a href="https://time.com/6252404/mira-murati-chatgpt-openai-interview/">CTO of OpenAI, told Time</a> that rules will give startups like her own the framework to better compete with big guns like Google.<h2>The case for transparency</h2>As AI becomes more available and easier to access, AI experts and policymakers agree that some uses of the technology need to be regulated, so it doesn't end up discriminating against certain people or making decisions based on flawed data. DAIR's Hanna said that regulation could give a much-needed impetus for AI companies to "show their work," requiring them to prove that they're accounting for bias in their datasets and algorithms. Those rules, in turn, could help companies and other organizations feel good about flocking to AI, having a higher degree of confidence in its ability to automate manual tasks without causing problems. Lieu plans to introduce AI regulation to the House of Representatives sooner rather than later, with the intent pressuring the Biden administration to <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/clearview-ai-bill-of-rights-white-house-facial-recognition-2022-10">think more about the impact of the technology</a>. The US doesn't have a clear idea yet what the rules could look like, though Lieu said it could be modeled on the European Union's proposal of limiting the types of use cases for AI."We already use AI, but it doesn't hit people the same way until it starts to act human or impacts someone's life," Lieu told Insider. "The technology can be flawed and rife for discrimination."

From the rolling hills and scattered villages of Qunu in the Eastern Cape, to reverent reflections in the prison cells of Robben Island, to the sacred sidewalk on Vilakazi Street in Soweto -- South Africa offers a chance to follow in the footsteps to freedom of the nation's most iconic hero -- Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela. Walk with us around: Robben Island Nelson Mandela spent 18 immensely challenging years in prison on this little island situated off the coast of Cape Town and yet emerged from it filled with forgiveness instead of hatred. Robben Island is now a World Heritage site and museum. Although from the 17th to the 20th century the island was a place of imprisonment -- today it is a beacon of hope and a place where visitors can gain some insight into the life and times of Nelson Mandela and fellow freedom fighters. The Constitution Hill in Johannesburg is now a fascinating museum and the home to South Africa's constitutional court. Apartheid Museum Apartheid -- a system of institutionalized racial segregation and discrimination, had infiltrated every nerve of the country. These dogmas (or the resistance towards them) helped shape Mandela's entire life and nowhere can you get a better grip on what transpired during the proceeding struggle than at the Apartheid Museum, situated south of Johannesburg. The Apartheid Museum opened in 2001 and is acknowledged throughout the world for its illustrious display of the rise and fall of Apartheid. Allow yourself at least a couple of hours to soak it all in, and get over an emotional yet interactive and informative visit. Google Street View offers several guided tours to the Apartheid Museum. Capture Site This site has enormous significance in the history of the freedom struggle because it was here that, after 17 months if evading the apartheid authorities, Nelson Mandela was arrested. On August 5, 1962, the policed flagged down a car driven by Nelson Mandela in a chauffer's uniform while he was returning from a secret meeting with the African National Congress president -- this incident would go on to shape the future of an entire country. To mark the historic spot is a sculpture comprising of 50 steel rods, that align to create a magnificent portrait of Mandela. Street View users can now view Marco Cianfanelli's extraordinary sculpture of Nelson Mandela at the Nelson Mandela Capture Site. Mandela House Situated in Vilakazi Street, the humble home Mandela moved into in 1946, the Mandela House gives visitors great insight into the Mandela family. "It was the opposite of grand," he wrote in his autobiography, Long Walk to Freedom, "but it was my first true home of my own and I was mightily proud." The house is filled with memorabilia about the family, complete with photographs and visuals and is a fitting tribute to the incredible struggle for freedom. Vilakazi Street is usually flooded with visitors wanting a glimpse into the home of the great Madiba -- hence getting an early start to this place might be a good idea. The building, which is now a museum dedicated to his life, can be explored via Google Street View. Route 67 Port Elizabeth includes Nelson Mandela Bay where one can find Route 67 -a collection of 67 art pieces by 67 local artists celebrating the 67 years Nelson Mandela devoted to public life, and his contribution to the freedom struggle in South Africa. It begins at the Campanile in Strand Street and winds its way through the CBD -- the heart of the city, through Vuyisile Mini Square, past the City Library, up the steps of St Mary's Terrace and up to the Great Flag in the Donkin Reserve. Nelson Mandela once said, "For to be free is not merely to cast off one's chains, but to live in a way that respects and enhances the freedom of others." International Mandela Day: Following in Madiba's footsteps

Shillong, July 13 () Ten BSF personnel were among 12 people found infected with COVID-19 in Meghalaya on Monday, raising the state's coronavirus count to 319, Health Minister A L Hek said. The two other cases were reported from the North Eastern Indira Gandhi Regional Institute of Health and Medical Sciences (NEIGRIHMS), he said. The state now has 271 active cases. So far, 46 people have recovered from the disease, while two have died. The minister said that 182 BSF personnel, two Air Force employees and two staffers of other central armed paramilitary forces have tested positive for COVID-19 till date, while the remaining 133 are are civilians. Meanwhile, a deputy commissioner in Meghalaya's East Khasi Hills district, in which state capital Shillong is located, was asked to go for 14 days' home quarantine after a member of her family was detected COVID-19 positive, a health department official said on Monday. The family member of Matsiewdor War Nongbri, who lives with her in the same house, tested positive for the disease last week, he said. The woman, who is in an advanced stage of pregnancy, had recently returned to the state from Delhi along with her husband and both were placed under institutional quarantine, a senior health official told . She was admitted to the North Eastern Indira Gandhi Regional Institute of Health and Medical Sciences (NEIGRIHMS) here on Tuesday night and she tested positive for the deadly virus, he said. "One high risk contact of a positive patient has tested positive for COVID19 in Shillong. Person is under medical supervision," Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma tweeted. Of the 44 cases, 30 are active while 13 persons have recovered and one has died, he added. Meanwhile, a village in Ri-Bhoi district, where a 72- year-old man had tested positive for COVID-19, has been declared a containment zone, Director of Health Services, Aman War, said. Shimla, May 1 () Himachal Pradesh has not reported any fresh COVID-19 case in the past eight days, a senior state government official said on Friday. So far, 41 coronavirus cases have been reported and the number of active cases in the state is five now, Additional Chief Secretary (Health) R D Dhiman said. Two people have died of COVID-19 in the state. The fatalities include a 70-year-old Delhi resident who had stayed at a guest house of a factory in Solan''s Baddi and died at the PGIMER, Chandigarh, on April 2. "Of the 340 samples sent for testing today, all tested negative for the infection," he said. These tests are being conducted at five laboratories in the state at Tanda's Dr Rajendra Prasad Government Medical College (RPGMC), Indira Gandhi Medical College (IGMC) in Shimla, Palampur's Institute of Himalayan Bioresource Technology (IHBT) in Kangra, Shri Lal Bahadur Shastri Government Medical College (SLBSGMC) Nerchowk in Mandi and Kasauli's Central Research Institute (CRI) in Solan. The active cases are from Una, Chamba and Sirmaur districts of the hill state. Nine out of total 12 districts of the state are coronavirus-free now. They are Kangra, Hamirpur, Solan, Shimla, Kinnaur, Lahaul-Spiti, Bilaspur, Mandi and Kullu. Three active cases from Una, one each from Chamba and Sirmaur are being treated at Tanda's RPGMC, Bhota Charitable Hospital in Hamirpur and Katha's ESIC in Solan district. A total of 30 patients including 13 from Una district, 5 each from Solan and Chamba, 4 from Kangra, 2 from Hamirpur and one patient from Sirmaur district have recovered so far.
