The <keyword id="6415708" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Khadi-and-Village-Industries-Commission">Khadi and Village Industries Commission</keyword> (<keyword id="6407941" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="kvic">KVIC</keyword>) is seeking international trademark protection for 'Charkha' symbol used on khadi products, according to an official statement. The commission is the registered proprietor of over a hundred trademark registrations, including the symbol of 'Charkha' in India and other countries like Russia, China, Germany, Australia, UK and Bhutan, the MSME ministry said in a statement on Wednesday. These <keyword id="1376938" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="trademarks">trademarks</keyword> and symbols, it said, have been misused time and again by private players. "In an initiative to prevent such misuse any further, KVIC has taken up the matter with the Ministry of External Affairs, Ministry of Commerce and Permanent Mission of India at UN, Geneva seeking international trademark protection of symbol of 'Charkha' under the Paris Convention," it said.
 An article of the convention protects armorial bearings, flags and other state emblems as well as official signs and hallmarks of the states.
 The signs published with <keyword id="141585" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="World-Intellectual-Property-Organization">World Intellectual Property Organization</keyword> (WIPO) under this act are prevented from being registered or used as trademarks, across the world, without authorization, it said. The commission has written to Commerce Minister <keyword id="6355222" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="piyush-goyal">Piyush Goyal</keyword> seeking his intervention to expedite the matter. "KVIC is fighting cases in several countries for violation of the khadi mark regulations," it said.
 The regulations issued in 2013 by the MSME ministry empower KVIC to grant 'Khadi Mark' registration and take royalties from any producer using this mark.
 "KVIC has issued notices against 600 entities in India, including a renowned garment chain and three entities in the international market, for misusing these symbols and indulging in unfair trade practices in the recent past," it added.

As a metro-dwelling Indian girl, I believe that wearing a Sari is too far-fetched for most occasions. The whole six-yards of fabric is hard to maneuver for a working woman and the grace the sari commands requires complicated footwear like heels and the right tucks that can unravel easily. The everyday Indian sari has seen a revival of sorts with movements like 100SareePact, which encourage women to wear saris at least 100 days a year and document it on social media. Still, most working women find the garment tedious to carry off and wear on a daily basis especially when stitched pieces can be so comfortable in form of kurtas, dresses or simply the typical pair of jeans and a shirt. Rita Kapoor Chrishti, who started the <keyword id="4193152" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="sari-school">Sari School</keyword> to help celebrate and educate others about the unstitched garment, started the afternoon with an interactive presentation. We learned about the craftspeople that create different kinds of hand-loom, all over the country. Handskilling capabilities on the traditional Charkha combined with Handloom weaving are the few unique resources that India holds in the international market. We also went back in time to when <keyword id="6355532" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="mahatma-gandhi">Mahatma Gandhi</keyword>'s support of the handloom industry popularized the indigenous methods of production during the Swaraj movement before industrialization took over. The highlight of the class was when we learnt how to drape the sari in four different regional styles, and understood the difference of quality between a range of handspun cotton and silks on display by touch &amp; feel. Rita has been involved in educating the world about saris through her work with artisans and she has also authored a book titled ‘Saris: Tradition and beyond.’ Sari, all Sari Traveling district-by-district, village-by-village, and city-by-city this extensive book explores the spectrum of traditional weaver and printer settlements in fourteen sari-producing states of India. Chrishti, who regularly takes up a group of four-five people for the <keyword id="719382" type="LOCATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="airbnb">Airbnb</keyword> experience every other Sunday in her studio, believes that a hands-on experience can really transform the way people perceive traditional saris. Rita also propagates that the nine yards don't have to be limited to a particular style and is familiar with 108 ways of draping the Sari. She demonstrated four regional styles of draping the Sari starting from <keyword id="28504" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="kerala">Kerala</keyword>’s Mohiniattam, Bengal’s Dhokna Jalpaiguri, Odissi Dance Style to Andra Pradesh’s Venukagundaram. My personal favorite was Mohiniattam style from Kerala that constructed a fabric flower on the hip and it didn't require a petticoat under. In the recent times, the availability of raw material at reasonable costs and availability of labour, along with giant strides in technology involving the progress of textile industry, it has turned into a sector that holds lots of promises. 
 
Major textile companies in the recent times, posted a good growth with increase in net profit and a significant drop in net loss, signaling good times ahead for the sector. 
 
What has helped the textile industry, however, is the fact that neighbouring countries like China and Bangladesh who are significant players in the same sector facing structural challenges to the extent that it has affected their export capabilities. 
 
India’s increasing efficiency in the sector along with 100% FDI allowed in the industry, is helping Indian textile firms consolidate their export positions. With US economy being slightly on the revival mode and India’s aggressive campaigning with Prime Minister Modi’s ‘Make In India’ tagline, textile sector is out to see much better days ahead than in the recent past. 
 
A free trade agreement with Eurpoean Union can seriously turn things around for India that is looking at enhancing its textile potential within and outside the country. 
 
India being the third largest exporter is looking at all possible ways of taking over the space left vacant by China. Tapping new markets, while working in its own space to meet the challenges seem to be the two roads ahead of Indian textile sector which is awaiting government’s booster dose to get its yarns into the looms. 
 
Mega textile shows have been held in new markets such as Japan, Middle East and more are planned to enter spaces in Latin America and Eastern European Countries which are among large economies that can strengthen India’s ‘Make In India’ campaign. 
 
The concept of smart cities that can house multiple expertise, along with organising of skilled and unskilled labour, fair practices and a consolidated legal framework to protect the interest of both workers and employers can surely place textile industry on a growth trajectory like never seen before. 
 
India can then make it for both the world, and for self.
