Ganguly, the former India captain, succeeds his former team-mate and India captain Anil Kumble, who stepped down after having served the maximum of three three-year terms. I would also like to thank Anil for his outstanding leadership over the last nine years which has included improving the international game through more regular and consistent application of DRS and a robust process for addressing suspect bowling actions," said ICC chairman <keyword id="6758293" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="greg-barclay" source="Orion">Greg Barclay</keyword>.<br /><br />The <keyword id="209835" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="icc-board" source="Orion">ICC Board</keyword> also approved the continuation of the ICC World Test Championship (WTC) in its current form of a nine-team league over a two-year period with a final between the top two teams at the conclusion.<br /><br />Following the expansion of the ICC Men's Cricket World Cup to a 14-team event in the next cycle (2027), the Board has accepted a recommendation from the Chief Executives' Committee (CEC) that the primary avenue for qualification for the event is based on rankings at a pre-determined cutoff date with the 10 highest-ranked teams on the Men's ODI Rankings qualifying automatically, and the remainder being determined via a global qualifier.<br /><br />The Board has approved first-class status and List A classification being applied to women's cricket to align with the men's game and applied retrospectively.<br /><br />In coming time, the ICC Women's Committee will be known as the ICC Women's Cricket Committee and will assume all decision-making responsibility for women's cricket reporting directly to the CEC. Johnny Grave, CEO of Cricket West Indies, has been appointed to the ICC Women's Cricket Committee.<br /><br />"This has been an extremely productive set of Board meetings and I'd like to thank my fellow Board Directors for their efforts in travelling to Dubai to enable us to enjoy our first face to face meeting in more than two years. They could also be the window to your health, if new contact lens technology pans out.</span></p>
<p>Researchers are working on smart contact lenses that could monitor a ton of different aspects of health, from diabetes to heart disease. Other high-tech lenses could also give wearers advanced vision capabilities and let them see augmented-reality screens. </p>
<p><span style="background-color: #ffffff;">Last year the U.S. Food and Drug Administration <a href="http://www.foxnews.com/health/2014/04/23/michigan-man-among-first-in-us-to-receive-bionic-eye/" target="_blank"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;">approved the first bionic eye</span></a>. A device housed on a pair of glasses transmits images to an artificial implant in the eye that stimulates electrodes on the surface of the person's retina. Israeli professor Zeev Zalevsky has already made <a href="http://www1.biu.ac.il/indexE.php?id=33&amp;pt=20&amp;pid=33&amp;level=2&amp;cPath=33&amp;type=1&amp;news=2057"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;">a bionic contact lens version</span></a> that doesn't require surgery (although it's not yet available for commercial use like the bionic eye). </span></p>
<p>"A lot of people think of contact lenses purely as a cosmetic device," says Thomas Quinn, chair of the contact lens and cornea section of the <a href="http://www.aoa.org/?sso=y" target="_blank">American Optometric Association</a>. But Quinn and others are predicting that these smart contacts - a combination of contact lenses, miniaturized electronics, and sensors - will have huge potential as medical tools far beyond vision correction. </p>
<h3>It's In The Eyes</h3>
<p>Humans produce tears for practical reasons - like flushing irritants such as dust or pollen out of the eye - and also in response to emotional stimuli. And while it may be easy to dismiss the droplets running down your face as just water, tears are complex. They contain a wide variety of chemicals that could tell a doctor about the health of your entire system.</p>
<p>These tears could replace the blood samples that doctors turn to when diagnosing and managing conditions like diabetes and heart failure. This could be especially meaningful, since going to the doctor's office to get blood drawn is time-intensive and the samples often need to be sent to a lab to be analyzed.</p>
<p>Some researchers are designing special high-tech contact lenses that could continuously monitor these health indicators, among others. The ultimate idea would be for the health information collected by the contact lens to be wirelessly communicated to both you and your doctor. Below are some of the applications in the works.</p>
<h3>Contacts To Monitor Glucose</h3>
<p>A prototype for a glucose-sensing contact lens is in the works, thanks to a partnership <a href="http://multimediacapsule.thomsonone.com/novartis/alcon-announcement" target="_blank">recently announced</a> between Google and Novartis. These contacts would be aimed at helping diabetics continuously monitor their blood glucose without having to prick their finger and test their blood throughout the day.</p>
<p>The prototype includes a miniaturized glucose sensor embedded in the contact that catches the tear fluid produced in the eye, <a href="http://googleblog.blogspot.com/2014/01/introducing-our-smart-contact-lens.html" target="_blank">according to Google's Official Blog</a>. A wireless chip the size of a piece of glitter and a tiny antenna that is "thinner than a human hair" transmit the data to an external device.</p>
<p>"Google is an expert at coming up with all these great gadgets. But Novartis is an expert in fabricating contact lenses," says Quinn. Google announced its plan to develop its smart contact-lens project in January 2014.</p>
<p>Google is suggesting the possible development of an app for the wearer or doctor (or both), though the details haven't been worked out yet. Novartis hopes to commercialize the product within about five years, <a href="http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2014-07-15/novartis-allies-google-with-to-make-smart-contact-lens.html" target="_blank">according to Bloomberg</a>.</p>
<h3>Other Detectable Diseases</h3>
<p>While this investment makes it likely that glucose-monitoring contacts will be the first to hit the commercial market, others are being researched, including the following.</p>
<p><strong>Heart failure.</strong> Smart contacts could potentially be used to monitor lactic acid (l-lactate) in tear fluid, <a href="http://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0925400511011397" target="_blank">according to a 2011 study by scientists from the University of Washington</a>. Increased lactic-acid levels can indicate heart failure, liver disease, and lung disease, <a href="http://www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/ency/article/003507.htm" target="_blank">according to the National Institutes of Health</a>. The technology for the lactic-acid sensor would likely be similar in nature to the glucose sensor described above.</p>
<p><strong>Certain cancers.</strong> Tears also contain a chemical called lacryglobin, <a href="http://www.technologyreview.com/news/529196/what-else-could-smart-contact-lenses-do/" target="_blank">which we first read about in MIT Technology Review</a>.</p>
<p>"Lacryglobin has been shown at the tear levels to be linked to <a href="http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/11446459" target="_blank">certain forms of cancer</a>," Quinn told Business Insider. "Specifically some of the more common ones - breast, colon, lung, prostate, and ovarian cancer."</p>
<p>A sensor that monitors lacryglobin could be useful for people who have gone into remission and want to have a continuous monitor of whether the cancer is starting to recur. Similarly, this kind of sensor could be useful for people who have a family history of certain cancers but haven't had yet shown any symptoms.</p>
<p><strong>Glaucoma.</strong> Glaucoma, a disease most common in people over 65, is characterized by damage to the optic nerve. The damage is caused by the pressure in the eye being too high, <a href="http://www.nei.nih.gov/health/glaucoma/glaucoma_facts.asp" target="_blank">according to the National Eye Institute</a>.</p>
<p>"The scary thing about glaucoma is that with most forms of it, you're asymptomatic. It doesn't hurt. The optic nerve which is the part that's damaged has no pain fibers. So you need to be looking for glaucoma," says Quinn.</p>
<p>Usually, a person would need to go to the doctor to get his or her eye pressure taken. The Swiss company Sensimed <a href="http://www.sensimed.ch/images/pdf/2014-07-17_epvantage_interview_sensimed_also_looks_through_the_lens_of_future_healthcare.pdf" target="_blank">has developed a sensor technology called Triggerfish</a> for contact lenses that can monitor the pressure inside the eye.</p>
<p>Triggerfish has been commercialized in Europe but is still undergoing testing in the U.S.</p>
<h3>Delivering Drugs</h3>
<p>Another area for growth in contact-lens technology is drug delivery. Many eye diseases or eye infections are treated with eyedrops. One of the downsides is that the eye gets a huge blast of the medication when the eyedrop is placed in the eye, but then it quickly dissipates.</p>
<p>Jerome Legerton, chief executive officer of Global Opthalmic Consultants, says that one of the biggest priorities in the industry is designing contact lenses that could steadily release medication over time, possibly 24 hours. While none of these lenses are currently available on the commercial market, Legerton says he has been closely following contact-lens patents, which indicate that this could soon be a priority for contact-lens companies.</p>
<h3>Augmented Reality</h3>
<p>"As a contact-lens professional, what excites me is that these kind of devices are going to open up opportunities for me to help a lot of people that I wouldn't help otherwise with contact lenses," Quinn told Business Insider.</p>
<p>Legerton agrees, but he doesn't want to stop at just health-related applications. Contact lenses were designed to be inconspicuous and allow the user to have an extended field of visions beyond that which could be seen through the frame of a pair of glasses. And it is precisely the discreet nature of the contact lens that will make it the ultimate wearable technology.</p>
<p>The holy grail, according to Legerton, would be a display contact lens that offers a "transparent display superimposed over or above the real world." Unlike Google Glass, which offers this augmented reality but in a field of view limited by the frame of the glasses, the lens Legerton envisions could give you the equivalent of multiple full desktop displays at the same time.</p>
<p>Legerton is a director of Innovega, a startup that's testing this concept of an augmented-reality contact lens. The company's current version includes a contact lens but requires glasses to mount the display. He remains hopeful that the full-display contact lens sans eyewear will someday be available.</p>
<p>This may sound like sci-fi, but it would be incredibly useful for, say, tracking your heart rate during a run. He's optimistic about the future of contact-lens technology: "Just because something is extremely difficult doesn't make it impossible."</p>

The following has been edited for length and clarity.</em></p><p>When I expanded my online business from copywriting to business mentorship for online entrepreneurs, I started getting a ton of questions from clients about building good habits and time management. </p><p>So I asked some of my high-performer friends who do 20 things at once and make it all look effortless what book they could recommend for improving upon this — and they unanimously said "<a href="https://affiliate.insider.com?amazonTrackingID=biauto-59987-20&amp;postID=63a1ce46722a683d0865a9bb&amp;site=bi&amp;u=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.amazon.com%2FAtomic-Habits-James-Clear-audiobook%2Fdp%2FB07RFSSYBH">Atomic Habits: An Easy and Proven Way to Build Good Habits and Break Bad Ones</a>" by James Clear. </p><p>I decided to read it in order to best serve my clients. So far, the lessons I've taken away from the book have worked at an 100% success rate — especially when it comes to addressing procrastination.</p><p>Here are five ways that my life changed for the better after I tried Clear's principles:</p><h2><strong style="color: #000000;">1. I beat distractions in my space</strong></h2><p>According to "Atomic Habits," the first law of behavior change is to "make it obvious." In the book, Clear refutes the idea that we're organized due to our willpower or genes and argues that our habits are a product of our environment. </p><p>I'd been feeling very distracted at work, constantly jumping from one project to the next and leaving incomplete <a href="https://www.notion.so/">Notion</a> tasks and half-finished emails. So, following the book's advice, I decided to upgrade my space.</p><p>My desk used to be a complete mess — sticky notes, pens, journals, and clementine peels everywhere, alongside multiple half-drunk takeaway coffee cups. </p><p>After reading "Atomic Habits," I set an alarm for 20 minutes so I'd get it done under pressure and separated everything into three piles: essentials, nice-to-have, and extras. The "essentials" on my desk now are my laptop, a podcasting microphone, a journal with a single pen, and a water bottle. I stashed all my "extras" — my Kindle and any hardcover books, pencils, business cards, and highlighters — in my closet.</p><p>Getting rid of the clutter has helped me focus, and I no longer lose ideas. Now everything that crosses my mind is in that one journal rather than spread across 20-odd sticky notes. Plus, all the tasks I start actually get done. </p><p>Clear's book inspired me to do the same inside my laptop, too. I grabbed all of my desktop folders and put them in one "Omega" folder, so now I enjoy a pristinely empty screen that doesn't give me anxiety. </p><p>Finally — this was the toughest — I began closing all my browser tabs before bed. I try to have no more than five open tabs at any given time now, which are my email, <a href="https://affiliate.insider.com?amazonTrackingID=biauto-59987-20&amp;postID=63a1ce46722a683d0865a9bb&amp;site=bi&amp;u=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.canva.com%2F">Canva</a>, <a href="https://teachable.com/">Teachable</a>, and one or two Google docs.</p><h2><strong style="color: #000000;">2. I stopped dreading video calls</strong></h2><p>"Atomic Habits" advises making new habits attractive and dividing them into small increments that over time build up to produce massive changes.</p><p>One habit I wanted to improve upon was being comfortable on Zoom, especially after two years of video fatigue. So to emulate what the book said, I started asking people I admire to join me on 20-minute long "coffee dates." I would sit down with creators, CEOs, authors, podcasters, astrologers, and coaches — most of whom I met on Instagram — and just talk about work and life. </p><p>When my timer went off, we'd wrap it up. That way, I could look forward to the next conversation. </p><p>These calls went on for about two months. Finally, I'd totally forgotten why I started them, and Zoom no longer intimidated or drained me. As James Clear says, small habits generate big changes, as long as you don't quit.</p><h2><strong style="color: #000000;">3. I created more time and comfort in my day</strong></h2><p>When I read Clear's suggestion to "audit" my day by writing out every little thing I did for 24 hours, I found it painstaking, which is how I could tell it was going to be worth it. </p><p>First, it made me realize that waking up at 7 a.m. was too late for my sleep chronotype. I was shocked to find out how much time I wasted on Netflix every evening — close to four hours — and how many consecutive hours I'd sit in a chair without getting up for a walk.</p><p>After this eye-opening audit, I began waking up at 5 a.m. and immediately felt in control versus "late to the party." The extra two hours per day allowed me to get a headstart on writing, and by the time 10 a.m. rolled around, I'd get up for an hour-long walk. I incorporated two more walks into my day — one around 3 p.m. and one at 8 p.m. when my Netflix binge would have been taking place. </p><p>Adding these extra walks to my day has been a game-changer for my lower back, which hurts a lot less than before. My eyes feel less fatigued as well, as I'm spending less time looking at a screen, especially late at night. </p><h2><strong>4. I made chores and dreaded tasks more manageable</strong></h2><p>Clear teaches his readers to do something called "temptation bundling." This means marrying two opposing actions: something you dread and something you love. </p><p>I hate folding laundry, so inspired by Clear's idea, I "bundled" that task with listening to my favorite YouTube playlist. Whenever I feel too lazy to work out or do my daily walk, I pair that exercise with listening to my favorite podcast. I have two picks: one on manifestation and spirituality, and one on marketing. </p><p>I now also save voice notes I get from my coaching clients to listen and reply to while I'm on my walk. That way, time flies and I get work done in the process. Plus, many of my clients love hearing the waves when I message them from the beach instead of the hollow echo of my home office. </p><h2><strong>5. I built a new habit with the 2-minute rule</strong></h2><p>I've always loved the idea<em> </em>of picking up new habits — but the reality is that it's hard. One of my goals last year was to get really good at recording Instagram Reels and posting every day, and "Atomic Habits" gave me a tangible strategy that helped me achieve this.</p><p>Clear suggests practicing the "two-minute rule" — setting your alarm for two minutes to test-drive a new habit, which is the only time you're allowed to practice that new habit for the day. So just as you start getting into it, time's up, and it leaves you craving more. </p><p>This is exactly what happened. I'd sit down to shoot a Reel in just two minutes. Before I knew it, time would be up. The tight limit helped me stop overthinking and just speak authentically and with passion, which really resonated with my friends and clients.</p><p>The two-minute rule is also extremely powerful if you're a procrastinator. Since you know it's only going to take 120 seconds, you just start. There's no room for second-guessing, and you don't need to prep too much, either. So before you know it, the habit becomes second nature.</p>

How to go live on Facebook from your phone or computer

<ul class="summary-list"><li>As companies opt to have employees <keyword id="123591" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Work-from-home">work from home</keyword> through at least the end of 2020, some workers are starting to indulge "workation" packages at hotels.</li><li>They can stay just for the day — or overnight — and enjoy new surroundings, like poolside cabanas with outlets.</li><li>Freelance writer Molly O'Brien visited three hotels in Los Angeles to check out their "workation" packages.</li></ul><p>Across the United States, timelines for remote work continue to extend and many <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/companies-asking-employees-to-work-from-home-due-to-coronavirus-2020">companies are encouraging permanent work from home </a>through at least the end of 2020. </p><p>In response, some employees have begun to seek alternative workspaces to get out of the house, looking to get some temporary separation from housemates or to experience a change of scenery. </p><p>In Los Angeles, many corporate offices still haven't opened due to safe gathering restrictions. A number of Los Angeles hotels are starting to offer up their rooms for "daytime" rental or extending their occupancy hours beyond traditional check-in times. </p><p>I wanted to check out some of the "workation" opportunities in Los Angeles, to compare and contrast their offerings based on their location in the city and the known reputation of the hotel's atmosphere. </p><p>I visited Viceroy Santa Monica on the coast, The Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel in Hollywood, and the InterContinental in downtown Los Angeles to experience how they're welcoming back guests — even if it's just for a workday. </p><h2>Viceroy Santa Monica</h2><div type="image" title="vsm_merryvale_2" height="1874" width="2500" msid="78128817" hostid="261"></div><p>First, I visited <a href="https://www.viceroyhotelsandresorts.com/santa-monica">Viceroy Santa Monica</a>, which took advantage of its recent pandemic closure to renovate the lobby space and spruce up its interior and exterior design. </p><p>As I pulled up to this 169 room property and admired the newly painted mural on the side of the building, I noted it was only accommodating self-parking at the moment — no valet.</p><p>Upon walking in, I noted the lobby is chic and modern, with a very Angeleno feeling vibe; the artwork on the wall across from the check-in desk is made up of skateboard wheels, paying homage to Los Angeles skate culture. </p><p>The "work from hotel" offer at Viceroy Santa Monica is an add-on to the purchase of a regular overnight stay in a Viceroy Grande Ocean View room. Guests can check in at 12pm, and have an entire day to enjoy the space, work and relax for $600. If visitors don't want to stay overnight, they can instead check out at 5 pm and the rate will be reduced by 20% for a $480 daytime visit. Its four meeting rooms are even named after media that has been filmed onsite.</p><p>Through large open doors behind the lobby, I spotted the pool, where people were lounging in socially distanced chairs and chicly decorated cabanas. Use of the pool is included in the property's "work from hotel" offer. In fact, the poolside cabanas are even lined with power outlets so you can work on your laptop.</p><div type="image" title="vsm_pool_deck_day" height="1523" width="2031" msid="78128826" hostid="261"></div> There's also the opportunity to book a timeslot at the hotel's fitness center, which you can have all to yourself and remain distanced from others.<p>Out of this entire experience, my very favorite detail of Viceroy's "work from hotel" offer is the property's location just steps from the Santa Monica sand. Guests will have everything they need onsite to be productive for a day of hard work — all followed by an evening of seaside relaxation.</p><h2>The Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel, Hollywood</h2><div type="image" title="hollywood roosevelt lobby" height="2268" width="3023" msid="78128830" hostid="261"></div><p>Next, I visited the <a href="https://www.thehollywoodroosevelt.com/">Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel </a>in Hollywood. This property is located just off of Hollywood boulevard, directly on The Walk of Fame, and across the street from the iconic Chinese Theatre. It's full of both classic and modern Hollywood history, and appropriately outfitted with 250 palm trees onsite. </p><p>Originally established in 1927, during the "Golden Era" of Los Angeles entertainment and architecture, this Hollywood classic hangout has stood the test of time, and remains a popular spot for local celebrities and visitors alike. </p><p>The hotel's workation package comes with complimentary day parking for one vehicle, complimentary high speed WiFi, tea and coffee, as well as an additional guest pass access for Tropicana Pool and access to the hotel gym (available on an appointment basis). Remote workers can check into the hotel at 9 am and stay until 8 pm, Monday — Thursday with the opportunity to add an overnight stay for an additional $50. </p><p>Rates for this offer start at $159, and visitors can experience luxury accommodations and escape away from the home office for the day in a pool view Cabana Garden or Cabana Balcony room. </p><div type="image" title="hollywood roosevelt room" height="1875" width="2500" msid="78128836" hostid="261"></div><p>As I pulled into the valet parking off Hollywood Boulevard and the Walk of Fame to visit the property, the experience felt like something out of a glamorous old-Hollywood movie. Before I was allowed to enter the lobby, my temperature was taken at the door. </p><p>The lobby featured a charming "walk of fame" themed social distancing stickers on the ground, for guests to stand and properly space themselves out. The check-in desk was protected by a thick layer of clear plexiglass. Even the magazines in the lobby were still encased within protective plastic wrapping, and there was ample signage reminding guests to wear masks at all times. </p><p>I toured the hotel with Juan J. Pineda, director of entertainment sales at The Hollywood Roosevelt, Pineda told me the property remains a popular spot for Hollywood executives to meet, and has in the past been the site of many TV and film events (such as the Mad Men wrap party in 2015). </p><p>While in-person group gatherings have been temporarily halted in LA, the hotel is still hosting guests — and spacing them out between every other room on every other floor. Pineda showed me each of the amenities "workation" guests could access onsite, including spaced out lounge chairs at Tropicana Pool, and dining service with temporarily modified hours. </p><div type="image" title="hollywood roosevelt pool" height="1875" width="2500" msid="78128841" hostid="261"></div><p>The Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel's workation package also offers the option to extend any daytime stay overnight for $50 extra. An ideal evening to take advantage of this experience would be on a Tuesday, when the hotel is hosting guests-only poolside "<a href="https://www.thehollywoodroosevelt.com/events/los-angeles/summer-movie-nights-at-tropicana">summer movie nights at Tropicana</a>" series, and screening well-known classics like "Saturday Night Fever" and "Footloose." Pineda told me this package isn't going anywhere anytime soon — the property plans to offer its workation experience through at least April of 2021. </p><h2>The InterContinental, downtown Los Angeles</h2><div type="image" title="intercontinental lobby" height="1875" width="2500" msid="78128844" hostid="261"></div><p>Finally, I visited the <a href="https://dtla.intercontinental.com/">InterContinental in downtown Los Angeles,</a> which is offering an "Elevate Your Work Day" package — a play on words of its proud status, since it's the tallest building west of Chicago (it's 1,100 feet above street level). The property is offering weekday use of its high-rise rooms for those looking to get out of the house. It's a newly built hotel, just completed in June of 2017. </p><p>With rates starting at $219, the offer includes use of a room from 9 am – 5 pm, unlimited wireless internet access anywhere in the building, office supplies, in-room coffee, espresso, and tea. It also comes with complimentary chef's choice Grab 'N Go breakfast and lunch at the hotel's downstairs cafe, as well as $10 flat daily parking rate (which is actually a steal in DTLA) and complimentary use of the 11,000 square foot Attitude Fitness Center and rooftop swimming pool. For an additional $50, "elevate" guests can also extend their stay overnight (with the payment of the overnight parking fee). </p><div type="image" title="intercontinental room" height="2017" width="2689" msid="78128848" hostid="261"></div><p>Many of the floors in the InterContinental are used as corporate office spaces, but the rest are hotel rooms. Unlike many hotels across the nation, the InterContinental never fully closed down during COVID and continued hosting overnight guests due to its central location in Los Angeles, and its ongoing demand to host pilots and crew members for flights out of nearby airport, LAX. The property offers 900 hotel rooms — ample space for allowing safe social distancing. </p><p>After I pulled up to the valet, director of corporate sales Cindy Tang told me the hotel is currently offering both valet and self-parking for its guests. </p><p>She gave me a tour of the particularly unique aspects of the hotel, including the corner "junior suite" with windows that showed views of LA for miles all the way out to the Hollywood sign to the Pacific Ocean, beyond. Tang said this style of room is a popular choice for workers who book the "elevate" experience.</p><p>The InterContinental lobby sits sky high on the 70th floor, but visitors won't waste any time getting to the top of this skyscraper — the elevators take just 40 seconds to ride to the 70th floor lobby (don't be alarmed if your ears pop!). Since it's a new building in an urban area, this property was designed to host events (it has 100,000 square feet of meeting space), and is equipped with modern amenities, including enough power outlets to satisfy any worker's electronic needs.</p><p>The hotel's location in DTLA is prime — it's right on the edge of the restaurants and attractions of bustling 7th street. When workers are ready for a break from the computer screen, both the pool and the hot tub are open and guests can even rent a cabana and order poolside food and beverage service. </p><div type="image" title="intercontinental pool" height="1875" width="2500" msid="78128856" hostid="261"></div><h2>Working hard, or hardly working?</h2><p>These three Los Angeles hotels have taken advantage of the opportunity to host remote employees and offer workers who have been toiling away in the home office for months a chance to relax at an onsite pool and enjoy a cocktail at the hotel bar after a hard day. </p><p>It's a smart business bet, as onsite representatives for each hotel say the offers have been extremely popular among Angelenos needing a nearby escape — these properties don't plan on ending their "Work From Hotel" offers anytime soon. The hotels are filling rooms that might otherwise sit empty without the normally higher rate of tourists, and helping contribute to a recovering tourism economy.  </p><p>The differing locations offer unique experiences from Hollywood to Santa Monica and into Downtown Los Angeles to get out of the house — and into the sky, out to the beach, or into a scene straight out of a Hollywood film.</p>

Luxury hotels are launching 'workation' packages to lure in travelers who can work remotely. We checked out 3 hotels in LA to see how their amenities stack up — here's what we found.

<ul class="summary-list"><li>The classic "good screen, bad screen" meme illustrates the way that we perceive technology used for productivity versus leisure.</li><li><keyword id="58679" type="COMPANY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Quarantine">Quarantine</keyword> has erased some of the markers that help us differentiate between the "good" and "bad" screens, leaving people feeling exhausted and at times reluctant to socialize online.</li><li>People can mitigate some of this screen exhaustion with simple strategies like taking phone calls while walking outside.</li></ul><p>In the two-plus months of quarantine in the United States, there's been a classic meme at the forefront of my mind. I cannot stop thinking about the Good Screen and the Bad Screen meme, and in turn, how none of my screens feel remotely "good" anymore.</p><blockquote class="reddit-card" data-card-created="1590012091"><a href="https://www.reddit.com/r/memes/comments/9kmvmk/we_need_more_good_screen_and_less_bad_screen/">We need MORE good screen and LESS bad screen</a> from <a href="http://www.reddit.com/r/memes">r/memes</a></blockquote><p>The premise of the meme is simple: the screens that we use for productivity — a desktop work computer in the image — are "bad." Conversely, the screens we use for leisure — a personal laptop —  are "good." While it's a pretty easy-to-understand concept, there are layers of association and meaning that help us make judgments about our various screens.</p><p>The man using the "bad" screen is wearing a button-up shirt, sitting in what seems to be an ergonomic (or at least, cozy) office chair, at a full desk with multiple monitors. "Good" screen guy is hanging out at home, wearing boxers and a plain tee while presumably surfing the web from the comfort of his bed. There's a clear division in types of technology, attire, setting, and formality, all of which help to clearly delineate where the two devices fall on the good/bad binary.</p><p>Quarantine has effectively erased all of those signifiers for people who previously did not work remotely. Many of us are <a href="https://www.insider.com/work-from-home-outfits-amid-coronavirus-quarantines-2020-3">wearing casual clothes</a> both on the clock and after hours, in addition to creating impromptu work spaces at home where we may also play video games, watch television, or eat meals. For those of us regularly clocking in virtually for the first time, there is no "good" screen anymore. Everything has started to feel like the "bad" screen.</p><blockquote class="twitter-tweet blockquote" data-lang="en" data-cards="" data-conversation="">—The Anti-Cado  (@a_cado_appears) <a href="https://twitter.com/mims/statuses/1256343898709991432?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw">May 1, 2020</a></blockquote><p>We're constantly inundated with <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/things-to-do-in-quarantine-activities-social-distancing-2020-4">more ways to virtually pass the time</a>, from the latest viral series like <a href="https://www.insider.com/best-memes-reactions-netflix-documentary-tiger-king-2020-3">"Tiger King"</a> to <a href="https://www.insider.com/zoom-memes-people-sharing-funny-backgrounds-outfits-and-tiktoks-2020-4">virtual hangouts</a>. Our adaptation to socializing and staying connected amid a pandemic is admirable. At the same time, after several months it can start to feel incredibly exhausting. </p><h2><strong>Our relationship with technology isn't quite so binary, even if it makes for a funny meme</strong></h2><p>Of course, our engagement with technology, no matter whether we typically use a device for productivity or leisure activities, isn't as simple as "good" and "bad," even if that's the crux of the meme's humor.</p><p>"We do tend to create these binary realities where it's good or bad, and this is forcing us to face the reality that few things are rarely that simplistic," said <a href="https://doreendm.com/about">Doreen Dodgen-Magee</a>, the author of "Deviced!: Balancing Life and Technology in a Digital World" and a psychologist. "I think we already lived in a time where productivity <keyword id="24504" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="culture">culture</keyword> pushed us to be engaged in the grind, even if that's just passing another level of a game while we're standing in line for something."</p><p>Constantly working and living at home, however, has blurred the lines between the times and devices that we use for productivity. Dodgen-Magee said that she's heard from people that they're not only multitasking with <keyword id="6358815" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="tech">tech</keyword> more than they were during the pandemic, but also that people aren't stepping away from their screens as much while they're not working. Rather, they're just doing recreational activities instead. </p><p>My own personal <keyword id="6453979" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="Screen-time">screen time</keyword> has increased in quarantine in well, although in the past month I've been making an effort to cut down smartphone usage in particular. It hasn't always worked — while I only logged 15 hours and 35 minutes of screen time on my phone the week of April 26 (a 29% decrease from the previous week), that jumped up to a whopping 35 hours and 19 minutes (approximately five hours per day) the week of May 10. That time was dominated by social platforms like Twitter, TikTok, and Instagram, along with websites like Archive of Our Own (where I frequently read fan fiction) and video calling platform FaceTime, which I use to talk to my parents. Some of my heaviest use occurred on weekdays, where I'm already guaranteed to spend at least eight hours staring at a computer screen.</p><h2><strong>Screen exhaustion — and social exhaustion — are partially due to our inability to say no</strong></h2><p>Dodgen-Magee told Insider she's noticed that people now tend to feel like they're expected to be available for work during increased time frames compared to pre-pandemic. While that perception will vary depending on pre-quarantine work habits, clocking out can mean something different when you're not physically leaving an office to do so.</p><blockquote class="twitter-tweet blockquote" data-lang="en" data-cards="" data-conversation="">—ꜱʜᴛᴇᴘ @ 5.0 COMPLETE  (@azimshteppe) <a href="https://twitter.com/mims/statuses/1262291504313167873?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw">May 18, 2020</a></blockquote><p>That reluctance to say no also carries over to our social lives, which are also now almost completely online. <a href="https://www.insider.com/virtual-hangouts-why-ok-to-decline-protect-mental-health-2020-4">Insider's Rachel Hosie reported</a> on the ways that messaging around socialization during the pandemic can create a feeling of obligation to hop on video calls with friends, even if a social call won't feel that relaxing after a day of video conferencing. Dodgen-Magee said that people are finding it harder to say no, particularly given that typical social outs like having to run an errand or being double-booked are harder to invoke in a video call.</p><p>"I think there's an ambient feeling of aloneness right now. People are reticent to do anything that could displease people," Dodgen-Magee said. "We don't have the language or vocabulary for saying, 'I'm feeling really overwhelmed. This is not a time I can do. I'm aware that that might feel really crummy.' We're just not used to that kind of nuanced, vulnerable communication."</p><p>In turn, as Dodgen-Magee wrote in a <a href="https://www.psychologytoday.com/us/blog/deviced/202004/why-video-chats-are-wearing-us-out">Psychology Today blog pos</a>t, video calls and virtual hangouts can leave us feeling more lonely and tired than we were in the first place. There's a particular kind of irony to the fact that the most effective way we have to communicate with others can still leave us feeling bereft.</p><h2><strong>Increased screen time can lead to eye strain, but shouldn't have lasting effects on eye <keyword id="6354750" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="health">health</keyword></strong></h2><p><a href="https://www.willseye.org/doctor/sunir-j-garg-md/">Dr. Sunir Garg</a>, clinical spokesperson for the American Academy of Ophthalmology and professor of ophthalmology at Willis Eye Hospital, told Insider that people <a href="https://www.aao.org/eye-health/tips-prevention/computer-usage">don't need to worry about long-term eye health</a> as a result of increased screen time. That being said, changing work habits may lead to increased eye strain. Dr. Garg said that decreased blinking while staring at screens can lead to users' eyes starting to dry out, leaving them feeling irritated and prickly. Staring in a single direction without moving your eyes around can be fatiguing as well.</p><p>"Part of the fun of being at work is that you're interacting with colleagues or taking a coffee break," he said. "Those kinds of physical activities break up starting at a screen. "I'm trying to encourage people to take stock of what they need relationally and then try to get somewhat creative about it," she said. That could include strategies like taking video calls outside, chatting with friends and family on the phone while taking a walk, or even ramping up sensory stimuli while chatting online by engaging tactile senses with something like Play Doh or putty. </p><p>In terms of eye strain, Dr. Garg recommends that people follow the "20-20-20" rule: every 20 seconds, shift your eyes to look at an object 20 feet away for 20 seconds. Additionally, assessing workplace set-up — such as proximity to a window that may create glare on a screen — can help to mitigate factors that may lead to eye strain. Looking towards long-term eye health, he recommends <a href="https://www.insider.com/how-to-start-a-new-workout-habit-in-quarantine-2020-4">regular exercise</a> as well a diet full of vegetables like broccoli, spinach, or kale as well as vibrant fruits like blueberries or strawberries. </p><h2><strong>The irony of the "good screen, bad screen" meme is that it's all still just a screen</strong></h2><p>The kind of tongue-cheek-humor that makes the "good screen, bad screen" meme funny is also what makes it deeply illustrative of how we typically perceive technology around us. While it's all still a screen in the end, situational nuance defines how we interact with different devices and digitally based tasks.
