We’ve all cribbed about how Samsung has stayed away from offering any kind of metal-element on its devices but now things are changing (they have to) and with Alpha, you get first ever instances of metal finishing on a Samsung Galaxy phone. Alpha is Samsung’s effort to move away from the mundane and try out something different, at a time when the numbers aren’t really crunching up for the Korean major. The phone’s back side finishing is more reminiscent to the perforated body on the Galaxy S5. Nothing new about then eh? Here’s what you’ll find with the Alpha.<br />

Galaxy Alpha sports a 4.7 inch Super AMOLED HD display, running on Android 4.4 KitKat version that’s seen on the phone in the form of TouchWiz interface. From power standpoint, the Alpha packs an octa-core Exynos 5 chipset paired with 2 GB RAM and offering 32 GB internal storage only with no expandable option in tow. It comes fitted with a 12 MP rear snapper with LED flash and 2.1 MP front shooter for selfies. Weighing at a mere 115 grams and 6.7 slim form figure, Alpha benefits from having the fingerprint scanner for those looking for added data protection. It’s loaded with an 1860 mAh battery that’s going to last for a day, or may be even more than that.<br />

<p class="source"><span>Samsung</span></p><ul class="summary-list"><li>Samsung has announced the fourth member of its Galaxy Book laptop line, just in time for <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/ces-2020" target="_blank" rel="noopener">CES 2020</a>.</li><li>Starting at $829.99, the Flex Alpha is a slightly more affordable version of Samsung's flagship QLED notebooks.</li><li>You'll be able to buy the Flex Alpha in the first half of 2020.</li></ul><p>CES 2020 is underway, and most major laptop brands are rolling out new devices. Ahead of the rush, Samsung had already gotten the ball rolling. Meet the new Galaxy Book Flex Alpha. </p><p>Samsung has announced a number of Galaxy Book laptops over the past year, though none have actually hit shelves yet. The Flex Alpha is the fourth, and likely cheapest, iteration. Unlike its siblings, which we expect to hit <a href="https://www.engadget.com/2019/10/29/galaxy-book-flex-and-ion-hands-on-gorgeous-qled-laptops/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">over $1000</a>, the Galaxy Book Flex Alpha will start at just $829.99.</p><p>The new Galaxy Book sports a 13.3-inch version of Samsung's proprietary quantum dot (QLED) display, which are able to display a massive color gamut beyond that of normal LED panels, and are the closest you can get to OLED-quality screens at a sub-$1000 price point.</p><p>The other signature feature is its portability. Samsung says the device weighs about 2.6 pounds, or just a bit lighter than last year's Dell XPS 13.</p><p>Design aside, the Flex Alpha looks to have fairly solid specs, including a 54Wh battery that Samsung says will last 17.5 hours, 8GB or 12GB of memory (RAM), up to 1TB of storage, and 10th-Generation Intel processors (CPUs) - though, Samsung isn't saying exactly which of these per configuration. The 2-in-1 device also supports Samsung's proprietary stylus, the Active Pen (though you have to purchase it separately), which is handy for artwork or notes.</p><p>Here are the specs, broken down:</p><ul><li><strong>CPU</strong>: 10th Generation Intel processors</li><li><strong>Graphics</strong>: Intel UHD Graphics </li><li><strong>Display</strong>: 13.3-inch QLED FHD touchscreen (1,920 x 1,080, 600 nits brightness)</li><li><strong>RAM</strong>: 8GB - 12GB</li><li><strong>Storage</strong>: 256GB/512GB/1TB SSD (PCIe)</li><li><strong>Ports</strong>: USB-C 3.1, 2 x USB 3.0, HDMI, microSD, headphone jack<p class="source"><span>Samsung</span></p></li></ul><p>I can't recommend a laptop for certain until I've tested it myself, but the Flex Alpha looks to be a solid mid-range purchase. One thing I do miss is the lack of discrete graphics options, but that's an understandable sacrifice for Samsung to make for the Flex Alpha's size and price. If the graphics are a deal breaker for you, you may want to look at the slightly more expensive Galaxy Book Flex and Galaxy Book Ion, also slated for release in early 2020. </p><p>Stay tuned for our full review of this device later this year. Samsung's cheapest new 2-in-1, Galaxy Book Flex Alpha, will cost $829.99 this year - here's what you need to know

<p class="first-text"> The <keyword id="10591" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Samsung">Samsung</keyword> Galaxy line has been a smartphone stalwart for years. But unanticipated <a href="http://abcnews.go.com/Technology/wireStory/samsung-profit-falls-smartphone-sales-slow-24784283" target="_blank">commercial</a> and <a href="http://bgr.com/2014/05/08/samsung-galaxy-s5-design/" target="_blank">design criticism</a> of its latest flagship, the Galaxy S5, has forced the company to go in a different creative direction-down a road that apparently leads straight to Cupertino, Calif.</p>

	New leaks from <a href="http://weibo.com/2452230511/BgzWv5DBR?mod=weibotime" target="_blank">Weibo</a> show off a purportedly reimagined Galaxy smartphone. If these leaks are accurate, Samsung has replaced the chrome-plastic ridges on the S5 with chamfered metal band that runs around the rim of the device. This rim also tapers on the edges most likely to comfortably fit your fingers and palm. The corners are still rounded but at a slightly sharper angle, more akin to current model iPhones than the S5, and Samsung also keeps its button front and center on the lower bezel but retains its familiar oval shape.</p>

	This radical revision isn't a complete surprise. Samsung <a href="http://www.reuters.com/article/2014/05/08/us-samsung-elec-design-idUSBREA4702I20140508" target="_blank">replaced the head of its mobile division </a>in May due, in part, to the S5's underwhelming performance, and just last week the company promised on an earnings call that there would an upcoming device using "new materials," according to <a href="http://online.wsj.com/news/article_email/samsungs-net-profit-declines-1406766190-lMyQjAxMTA0MDMwMDEzNDAyWj" target="_blank">The Wall Street Journal</a>. I guess people weren't loving that plastic <a href="http://gizmodo.com/samsung-galaxy-s5-review-less-is-so-much-more-1563306790">band-aid backing</a><inset id="1563306790"></inset>.</p>
<p> At first glance, this thing looks like a frankenstein monster stitched together from old <keyword id="530942" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="iPhone-5">iPhone 5</keyword> and Galaxy S5 parts, and thanks to another leak from a <a href="http://www.zdnet.com/samsung-galaxy-alpha-smartphone-specs-leak-pre-order-available-7000032294/" target="_blank">UK retailer</a>, we may know a little bit about what will be power it. Unlike the S5, Samsung will reportedly be ditching <keyword id="104695" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Qualcomm">Qualcomm</keyword> for the Octa-core Exynos 5 processor, a 4.7-inch display (also similar to a rumored <keyword id="6354606" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="iPhone">iPhone</keyword> 6 size) delivering 320 pixels per inch, 32GB of storage, and a 12 mega-pixel camera. It's also rumored that the <keyword id="175327" type="TECHNOLOGY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Alpha">Alpha</keyword> may have 6.7-inch phablet version as well, which would most likely skew some of these leaked specs-especially the screen. Let's hope through all this redesign, Samsung at least holds on to its removable battery.</p>

	These specs and designs are all tentative and are a pretty big leap from <a href="http://www.phonearena.com/news/Samsung-Galaxy-Alpha-to-be-announced-on-August-13-Exynos-5433-Octa-processor-and-12MP-camera-expected_id58832" target="_blank">other Alpha leaks we've seen</a>. New Galaxy Alpha Leaks Show iPhone-Inspired Design

<p><div class="KonaFilter image-container float_right"><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span><a href="http://wmpoweruser.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/08/qJ8SQ2s.png">WMPowerUser</a></span></p><p class="caption">Leaked screenshot showing the specs of Microsoft's rumoured Surface Phone</p></div><p></p></div>After losing over $3 billion (£1.9 billion) on its acquisition of Nokia, it would seem logical that Microsoft was getting out of the smartphone game altogether - but not so. </p><p>Leaked screenshots obtained by <a href="http://wmpoweruser.com/purported-full-specs-of-surface-mobile-phone-juggernaut-alpha-leak/">WMPowerUser</a> reportedly show the specs of a new Surface phone code-named "Juggernaut Alpha" that, according to the source, will be branded as Surface Mobile and will launch at the end of 2015 or early on into 2016. </p><p>The new handset will feature a 5.5-inch AMOLED display with a resolution of 1440×2560. (For reference, the iPhone 6 Plus has a 5.5-inch screen with a resolution of 1080x1920.)</p><p>Powering the Surface phone's screen is an Intel Atom x3 (SoFIA) CPU and 4GB of RAM, more than enough to make the phone work seriously fast. Storage options would start at 64GB and go up to 128GB leaving out the lower end 32GB or even 16GB options that some manufactures choose to sell.</p><p>Interestingly, the Surface phone could also include support for Microsoft's Surface Pen technology which has been popularized by the Surface tablets and isn't available on any smartphone currently. <p class="p1">After announcing <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/samsung-q2-earnings-2014-7">its worst earnings report in two years</a>, Samsung is <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/xiaomi-passes-samsung-in-china-2014-8" target="_blank">no longer the leading smartphone maker in China</a>. </p>
<p class="p1">According to the <a href="http://www.canalys.com/chart/index.html#display-289">latest market research from Canalys</a>, Xiaomi, the Chinese smartphone maker that sells cheap smartphones and tablets <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/xiaomi-copying-apple-2014-7">that look eerily like Apple products</a>, is now the number one smartphone vendor in its home country. Xiaomi accounted for 14% of China's smartphone sales in the second quarter, while Samsung accounted for just 12%, according to Canalys.</p>
<p class="p1">But Xiaomi isn't alone. Samsung's other rivals in China, including Huawei and Lenovo, are now ahead of Samsung when it comes to global smartphone market share, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/r-xiaomis-star-rises-as-chinese-handset-makers-gnaw-at-samsungs-share-report-2014-31" target="_blank">according to a report by Strategy Analytics</a>. </p>
<p class="p1">China is the biggest smartphone market in the world, so losing control of the market is a big deal for Samsung.</p>
<p class="p1">Companies like Xiaomi are finally figuring out how to release phones and tablets with impressive specs and big, beautiful displays that cost a fraction of Samsung's devices. <span>Samsung's Galaxy S5 costs at least $600. In contrast, Xiaomi's newest Mi4 flagship costs just $320. </span></p>
<p class="p1">Samsung, as always, has plenty of devices waiting in the wings, including a new <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/samsung-galaxy-alpha-leaked-photos-2014-8" target="_blank">Galaxy Alpha handset that looks like the iPhone 5S</a> and the <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/samsung-galaxy-note-4-specs-and-rumors-2014-8" target="_blank">Galaxy Note 4</a> "phablet," which will likely be unveiled just ahead of this year's IFA conference in Berlin in early September. <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/chart-of-the-day-samsungs-transformation-into-a-mobile-company-2014-7" target="_blank">But as this chart shows</a>, Samsung's profits are taking a bit hit as it seeks to compete with numerous, cheaper rivals, and the company acknowledged as much during its earnings report. </p>

Apple has about 42% of the market share there and Samsung has about 28%. No one else is even close. But Samsung, as well as Apple, <span style="line-height: 1.5em;">may become more vulnerable to these Chinese smartphone makers if and when they begin to sell their low-priced handsets in the U.S. After all, when the technologies are equal, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/phone-pricing-chart-shows-apple-is-fighting-an-unstoppable-force-2014-5" target="_blank">price is usually the biggest deciding factor for consumers</a>.</span></p>
<p class="p1"><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">Until those cheaper handsets start arriving in the western hemisphere, however, Samsung will need to fight tooth-and-nail to find new product categories that'll make up for some of its dwindling mobile profits.</span></p>
<p class="p1"><span style="line-height: 1.5em;"> According to the company, </span><a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/samsung-silicon-valley-rd-center-2014-7" target="_blank">Samsung plans to "hire like crazy" in Silicon Valley</a><span style="line-height: 1.5em;"> to find "the next big thing." But unless the company decides to be a premium electronics company like Apple, a strong dose of R&amp;D may be Samsung's best bet to fend off this new wave of cheap-but-powerful devices coming out of China.</span></p>
