<keyword id="6358064" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="isro" source="Orion">ISRO</keyword>'s Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre has conducted the Integrated Main Parachute Airdrop Test (IMAT) of its crew module deceleration system for the much-awaited maiden <keyword id="6797456" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Gaganyaan" source="Orion">Gaganyaan</keyword> human spaceflight programme at the Babina Field Fire Range (BFFR) in Jhansi district of Uttar Pradesh. The IMAT conducted on Friday marks a significant milestone toward realising the nation's ambitious Gaganyaan project, the <keyword id="116095" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="indian-space-research-organisation" source="Orion">Indian Space Research Organisation</keyword> (ISRO) said in a statement. The Gaganyaan deceleration system consists of three main parachutes, besides the smaller ACS, pilot, and drogue parachutes, to reduce the speed of the crew module to safe levels during its landing, the space agency said. Two of the three main chutes are sufficient to land the astronauts on earth, and the third is redundant, ISRO said adding that the IMAT test simulated the case when one main chute failed to open. The IMAT test is the first in a series of integrated parachute airdrop tests planned to simulate different failure conditions of the parachute system before it is deemed qualified to be used in the first human spaceflight mission. In this test, a five-tonne dummy mass, equivalent to the crew module mass, was taken to an altitude of 2.5 kilometres and dropped using the <keyword id="15141" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="indian-air-force" source="Orion">Indian Air Force</keyword>'s IL-76 aircraft. Two small pyro-based mortar-deployed pilot parachutes then pulled the main parachutes. The main parachute sizes were initially restricted to a smaller area to reduce the opening shock. After seven seconds, the pyro-based reefing line cutters cut the area restricting line, allowing the parachutes to inflate fully. "The fully inflated main parachutes reduced the payload speed to a safe landing speed. The entire sequence lasted about 2-3 minutes as the scientists watched the different phases of the deployment sequence unfold with bated breath. There was loud cheer and applause as the payload mass landed softly on the ground and the gigantic parachutes collapsed," the statement read. The design and development of the parachute-based deceleration system is a joint venture of ISRO and the Defence <keyword id="73655" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="research-and-development" source="Orion">Research and Development</keyword> Organisation (DRDO). "The overall system design, analytical simulations of parachute deployment and crew module descent under various conditions, the design and development of ordnance devices for parachute extraction and ejection, assembly, mechanical and electrical integration of deceleration system, it's instrumentation and avionics for conducting this drop tests are done at ISRO's leading Research and Development centre, Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre (VSSC), Thiruvananthapuram," the space agency explained. Senior ISRO and DRDO scientists and airforce officers were present when the crucial test was done. "Besides proving the calibre of the scientists of ISRO and DRDO, the test also demonstrated the active coordination between the country's premier agencies, namely ISRO, DRDO, the Indian Air Force, and the Indian Army," ISRO said quoting a senior official. ISRO conducts parachute airdrop test of Gaganyaan programme

The <keyword id="116095" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="indian-space-research-organisation" source="Orion">Indian Space Research Organisation</keyword> (<keyword id="6358064" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="isro" source="Orion">ISRO</keyword>) successfully fired the high thrust <keyword id="1142" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="vikas" source="Orion">Vikas</keyword> engine that would power India's first rocket that would carry humans. According to ISRO, the Vikas engine for the Gaganyaan/human space mission underwent the qualification test for a duration of 25 seconds at the ISRO Propulsion Complex (IPRC), in Mahendragiri, Tamil Nadu. The Indian space agency said, already two engines have undergone tests under nominal operating conditions for a total duration of 480 seconds. The test carried out on Thursday was to verify the robustness of the engine by operating beyond its nominal operating conditions (fuel-oxidiser ratio and chamber pressure). The performance of the engine met the test objectives and the engine parameters were closely matching with the predictions during the entire duration of the test. Further, three more tests are planned for a cumulative duration of 75 seconds under varying operating conditions. Subsequently, another high thrust Vikas engine will undergo a long-duration test for 240 seconds to complete the Vikas engine qualification for <keyword id="7170026" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="gaganyaan-programme" source="Orion">Gaganyaan Programme</keyword>, ISRO said. The space agency also has drawn up plans to launch missions for studying climate and weather conditions of the Earth, the space agency chief said, speaking to reporters on Sunday. Besides, ISRO is also working on regular scientific missions including communication, remote sensing satellites, Somanath, who is also the Secretary of the Department of Space, said here. Speaking about the Gaganyaan programme, he said the maiden TV-D1 test flight is scheduled for October 21. Elaborating about the upcoming missions undertaken by the Bengaluru-headquartered space agency, he said, "We have exploration missions. We have plans to go to Mars, Venus, again sometime to the Moon. We also have programmes to look at the climate and weather of Earth." Stressing that the scientists at ISRO would be focused on taking up regular missions like launching satellites for communications and remote sensing, he said scientific missions are also in the pipeline to look at issues like aeronomy, thermal imaging, and climate change impact assessment. "So many things are there and we are very busy doing all of this," he said. To a query about whether scientists were able to receive any kind of response from the Vikram lander of the Chandrayaan-3 spacecraft, which successfully made a soft-landing on the surface of the Moon on August 23, he said Vikram had done its job very well during the lunar day (equivalent of 14 Earth days) at which time it was programmed to perform its functions. "It is happily sleeping on the Moon. It has done its job very well. Maybe if it wishes to wake up, let it wake up. Until then, we will wait," he said. ISRO made efforts to re-establish communication with rover Pragyan and lander Vikram after they were put into sleep mode in September following the onset of night on the Moon. "No signals have been received from them. Efforts to establish contact will continue," ISRO had said. After the historic landing on August 23, lander Vikram and rover Pragyan performed different tasks on the lunar surface, including detecting the presence of sulphur and recording relative temperature. About ISRO's maiden mission to study the Sun, Somanath said the spacecraft is 'very healthy' and is on a 110-day long journey to the Lagrange point L1 and is expected to reach the intended destination by "middle of January." "It is a long journey. It is almost 110 days of journey and it has covered some distance now. We corrected a little bit of its trajectory, because early correction is important to reach the L1 point. After tracking, we find it is going in the right direction towards the L1 point," he said. Observing that the rocket is on a 'complex travel', Somanath said, "It takes almost another 70-75 days further to reach. By the middle of January, it will reach there. After that, we will make some corrections to make it enter into the Halo orbit at the L1 point." "After that instruments will be switched on and it will start doing the scientific data streaming. Currently, everything is very healthy on Aditya L1," he said. Aditya-L1 was launched on September 2, and it is the first Indian space-based observatory that will study the Sun from a halo orbit around the first <keyword id="19149915" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="sun-earth-lagrangian" source="Orion">Sun-Earth Lagrangian</keyword> point (L1), which is located roughly 1.5 million km from the Earth. Earlier, Somanath visited the residence of renowned agricultural scientist <keyword id="86797" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="m-s-swaminathan" source="Orion">M S Swaminathan</keyword>, who passed away on September 28. He met the family members of the eminent plant geneticist known as the driving force behind India's 'Green Revolution', here in the city. "I am here today just to pay my tributes and my affection to his (M S Swaminathan's) contribution... Whoever works in whichever field whether it is space, agriculture or sustainability and many other domains, we all find a place to work together," he said. "Thank you so much for the opportunity. As per the minister, the mission was delayed as the astronauts could not be trained in Russia after the outbreak of the pandemic. According to ISRO, the Gaganyaan programme will lay the foundation for a sustained Indian human space exploration programme in the long run. Also, the objective of this mission is to demonstrate the indigenous capability to undertake human space flight. Other than these, Gaganyaan will have both tangible and intangible benefits for India, including a step toward an affordable and sustained human and robotic programme to explore space and beyond. This human space flight is expected to take about 16 minutes to reach the intended orbit. The space suits are created by the Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre. For the training of astronauts, ISRO and Russian government-owned Glavkosmos signed a contract for training. By going through data from TESS, Jacobs helped spot the gaseous planet now identified as TOI-2180 b. Jacobs and his group of citizen scientists along with two veteran astronomers are collectively called the “Visual Survey Group” and they use a programme called LcTools to inspect telescope data by eye. But finding more about the planet and details like its size and mass required the help of professional astronomers as well as citizen scientists. The Jupiter-like planet orbits a star with the same mass as the sun and it has a 261-day year which is long in comparison to other known <keyword id="2834439" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="gas-giants" source="Orion">gas giants</keyword> outside our solar system, according to <a href="https://iopscience.iop.org/article/10.3847/1538-3881/ac415b" data-type="tilCustomLink">The Astronomical Journal</a>. Planet TOI-2180 b is said to have the same diameter as Jupiter but it’s almost three times more massive. It’s also believed to contain 105 times the mass of Earth with elements heavier than helium and hydrogen. Scientists discover giant gaseous planet almost three times larger than Jupiter

The first uncrewed <keyword id="139576" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="space-mission" source="Orion">space mission</keyword> part of India's Rs 9,023 crore human <keyword id="41531" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="space" source="Orion">space</keyword> mission called 'Gaganyaan' is slated for the second half of 2022, the government said. Answering a question raised in the Rajya Sabha, Union Minister of Science and Technology Dr. Jitendra Singh on Thursday said the test vehicle flight for validation of Crew Escape System performance and the first <keyword id="12710280" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="uncrewed-mission" source="Orion">uncrewed mission</keyword> of Gaganyaan are scheduled during the beginning of second half of 2022. This will be followed by a second un<keyword id="9615699" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="crewed-mission" source="Orion">crewed mission</keyword> and first crewed mission, Singh added. According to him, the design of all systems of Gaganyaan has been completed. Realisation of various systems are in different stages of progress. Ground qualification tests of human rated launch vehicle (rocket) propulsion stages have already commenced and are progressing successfully. "The configuration and design of ground infrastructure has been completed and modifications needed are being implemented. The MoU, contracts and Implementation arrangement (IA) related activities with both national and international agencies are progressing well," Singh said. "Receipt of deliverables has commenced against contracts with M/s Glavkosmos (Russian Space Agency) for space suit, crew seat and View port. Also receipt of deliverables under various work packages of CNES (French Space Agency) IA has commenced," Singh added. The activities related to development of microgravity experiments have commenced, the conceptual design for experiments is under review. The astronaut training facility is getting established at Bengaluru and in an advanced stage of completion. Basic Aeromedical training and flying practice completed as part of the Indian leg of training. The objective of Gaganyaan programme is to demonstrate the capability to send humans to low earth orbit (LEO) onboard an Indian rocket and bring them back to earth safely. On the question raised about the status of India's third moon mission — <keyword id="8011274" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="chandrayaan-3" source="Orion">Chandrayaan-3</keyword> — he said it is in the advanced stage of realisation. All the systems in both Propulsion Module and Rover Module have been realised, integrated and tested. In the Lander Module, most of the systems have been realised and tests are under progress. Integrated Sensors and Navigation performance tests on the Lander have been completed and other tests are in progress. All the identified tests will be completed before the launch of Chandrayaan-3, he said. Chandrayaan-3 is targeted to be launched in the second quarter of financial year 2022 -2023. India's first unmanned space mission scheduled for launch in 2022; Chandrayaan-3 moon mission in advanced stages of realisation

India's '<keyword id="6797456" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="gaganyaan" source="Orion">Gaganyaan</keyword>' mission is likely to be launched by the end of 2022 or early 2023, <keyword id="6358932" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Union-minister" source="Orion">Union minister</keyword> <keyword id="52861" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="jitendra-singh" source="Orion">Jitendra Singh</keyword> said on Wednesday. The mission, originally scheduled for a launch by 2022, was delayed due to coronavirus pandemic. It aims to launch a manned mission in the Lower Earth Orbit. "We could have actually done this (launched Gaganyaan by 2022). We had planned to time it along the 75th anniversary of India's Independence, but it could not happen that way because of the inevitable delay caused due to COVID-19. "But I am sure, maybe by the end of next year or may be (by) the beginning of 2023, we would be able to do that as well," he said. Singh, the Minister of State in the Department of Space, was addressing a webinar on 'Future of India-Oceania Space Technology Partnerships' organised by the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce &amp; Industry (FICCI) here. He further said a brainstorming exercise by space scientists and government officials in 2015-16 helped them understand where space technology could be used. "Space technology has a role to play, virtually, in every sector," he asserted. Space technology has come very handy in the area of disaster management, the minister said, adding that space medicine is also deeply connected in the endeavour to send three Indians to space. According to the government, four biological and two physical science related microgravity experiments from academic institutions are shortlisted for unmanned mission of the Gaganyaan programme. Singh also emphasised on the importance of reaching out to start-ups and industry players working in the arena of space. Speaking on India's collaboration with oceanic countries in the area of space, he noted that India has a "comfort level" with these countries which makes it easy to collaborate with them. "The Oceania countries such as New Zealand, Australia and the Pacific Island countries can also collaborate (with India) and work on joint space technology solutions and innovative products," the MoS added.
