It goes unsaid that <keyword id="436047" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Ecommerce">eCommerce</keyword> has changed the way we shop. Capturing that rapidly growing eCommerce market has been somewhat a dream for technocrats and entrepreneurs in India. The country with booming <keyword id="34412" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="economy">economy</keyword>, endless opportunities, ample skilled and educated human resources, rapidly growing market base, and a perfect weather for eCommerce growth – all this and much more has it going for eCommerce growth in India. The Internet penetration, though a lot lesser for a population of 1.2 billion, is promisingly rapid in the recent times. 
 
Though the companies have spent a lot more time trying to sell their concepts and platforms to VCs who have cut the deals for them by investing huge monies, or have helped the idea become bigger and better with their insights; there is one thing for sure. Whether we love it or not, the future for Indian eCommerce is bound to become an example of sorts to the companies worldwide. 
 
Experts forecast that the share of online retail in total organized retail in India will grow from 0.1% to 5.3% into the beginning of the next decade. Online markets will continue to grow in tier II cities and even tier III ones because the tier I cities would have grown moderately saturated by that time. The brand-conscious consumers, who don’t have outlets in their own cities, will help this portion of eCommerce grow well, robustly and rapidly. But, while the future looks bright and beautiful for the eCommerce companies, not all is hunky dory and pink on the horizon that holds their dream future. 
 Could it be an indication that rest of the eCommerce segment concentrated on grabbing consumers through their buying preferences, that Indian ecommerce logistics startup delivery service ‘<keyword id="1560090" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Delhivery">Delhivery</keyword>’ raised $85 million, on round D. This round came in less than eight months after round C which landed them with $ 35 million! 
 
Delhivery currently employs over 10,000 people across 200 cities in the country through its 11 ‘fulfillment’ centres covering more than a million sq ft of warehouse space. The company claims to be India’s top ecommerce fulfillment company, which processes over three million transactions every month, for 70,000 merchants and 1,500 eCommerce companies, along with 200 offline retailers. 
 
Delhivery is among many companies that are harnessing the vacuum created by logistics-dependent ecommerce companies. 
 
Today, as eCommerce companies get their parachutes ready to jump into the market, there are some crucial aspects that stare at them in their future together. Logistics is probably the most important aspect that needs to be paid attention to, by companies that are aiming at harnessing the ecommerce potential. 
 
Inadequate warehouses, poor tracking systems, lack of skilled and reliable workers, and limited cargo options are leaving a dent on the future of eCommerce in India because Indian eCommerce shopping experience is said to be way too low when compared to the US and China. Now, having said that, India needs to focus on making this system better only so that the space for eCommerce expands in India rather than contracting. 
 
This month, Indian e-retailer Myntra has taken a rather bold decision that it would only exist on mobile platform. It makes sense in some manner that the companies are willing to experiment and leave crucial lessons behind for consumer behavior, but what can never be undone would the wrath of a scorned customer. There are people who have done high-end shopping on the Internet and have been left desiring for more. Phones, laptops among high end gadgets somehow mysteriously disappear, and the customer finds it hard to interact with the company to get a replacement. More often than not, these are not replaced. 
 
When the news spills out on social media, it does more harm and raises a question on the reliability factor of the brand name. Though India has long replaced US as the second highest nation with Internet penetration, only half a percent of nation’s retail comes from the Internet. This number has to be pushed and prodded for better growth. With no efficient delivery system in place, the companies often take it easy so that they don’t earn a customer’s wrath after overpromising. 
 
Unprecedented high volume of goods move around festive times, especially around Diwali when the culture of exchanging gifts gets a revival. But to depend only on air cargo hurts the chances of ecommerce companies. 
 
Apart from logistics, the industry for its growth needs to have some indication of customer loyalty. As of now, that comes at a premium, and since most eCommerce companies present similar shopping experiences except for the niche market they are dealing with, a customer will always be spoilt for choices. A lesson in this chapter would do a lot better for the companies than having to shoot in the dark and hope to hit the goal.

Road ahead: eCommerce will have to face serious challenges

Till his name flashed as the founder and the brain behind <keyword id="1334" type="COUNTRY" weightage="20" keywordseo="China">China</keyword>’s biggest tech float, or as the man behind the <keyword id="436047" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Ecommerce">eCommerce</keyword> company that raised $25 billion through successful IPO at NYSE, China’s <keyword id="424838" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Jack-Ma">Jack Ma</keyword> and his company <keyword id="302749" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Alibaba">Alibaba</keyword> were pretty much unknown to the world outside. Silicon Valley would have certainly watched his steps, but the kind of success he posted in the recent times, from the communist inroads of China, Jack Ma became a legend of sorts and the name that would be cited as the most successful <keyword id="6355515" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Business">business</keyword> in the Internet arena for a long time to come. 
 
For those who have been watching this small-framed man with a genial smile, and unassuming gait, the most successful IPO under his belt is a fitting conclusion to the dream he has been nurturing since a decade and half. 
 
He saw possibilities in a country where the word Internet met with somewhat mixed responses, and manufacturing was at its all time high. To be a dreamer in a country, which was aiming at being a superpower can be both exhilarating and exhausting experience. Because, for those who see the potential but cannot bring a foolproof business plan to the table, the atmosphere can be quite hostile. 
 
The road hasn’t been an easy one. With a name as unconventional as Alibaba (Jack felt this is appropriate because it rolls out smoothly with everyone, and signifies fantasy) Jack Ma went through some phases of disappointment through the IPO rodeo. When his B2B website went public at Hong Kong Stock Exchange in 2007, the excitement was mixed with the word – caution. Few years later, Jack went downhill with bad times and suffered a bit of reputation loss with a scandal that hit his company. 
 
Nevertheless, with the help of his unconventional approach towards building a strong, profitable and fair company, Jack sprang back on his feet. Few years from an ugly scandal, Jack turned into a household name, and a demigod of sorts for those who are dreaming of leveraging on the potential of Internet. 
 
Personally too, Jack Ma is a story that can inspire many people to rise against the odds. Only he could see opportunity in the rising China, and has changed the way businesses grow in the days to come. 
 
eCommerce has been a rage of sorts in India too. Some of the firms such as Flipkart are out to give tough competition to MNC giants such as Amazon with their specific business acumen as far as local business is concerned. 
 
Jack Ma had two perspectives in his business – one where he found an immediate opportunity and the second one was about the vision that went beyond the visible opportunity. 
 
eCommerce businesses in India today are springing up like never before. With the changed political atmosphere where entrepreneurial ideas are encouraged and allowed to grow by way of creating conducive environs, eCommerce should be able to thrive well on Indian turf. 
 
What Jack Ma saw was the crucial gap between the ‘manufacturing’-oriented China. Businesses that produced goods were aplenty, but the missing link between all of them was the lack of a single platform where they met to take their goods closer to the market in the form of a buyer who would consume, or a supplier who furthered the goods to another one. 
 
It is a given that Alibaba is China’s biggest online commerce company, which has domestic operations. Though this sounds limiting, it should be seen in a perspective that showcases the market size. The ever growing number of Chinese Internet users, despite the fact that social networking sites aren’t allowed by government agencies. 
 
However, here are the stats. With 618 mn Internet users till December 2013, the space of Internet is a large market by itself. This is similar to what India is. 
 
India today makes for a country that has shown great potential in online sales and shopping. Recently, a survey revealed India was among the fastest growing market for online ads, with the number of users who accessed net through their smartphones was growing at a rapid pace. 
 
This is certainly good news for those bright eCommerce minds, which are looking for an opportunity. Indians in the urban areas are changing their conventional habits of simple shopping, replacing it with buying online, to save time and get better deals.

Jack Ma’s Success A Pointer To India’s eCommerce Future

In a bid to take on its e-commerce rivals such as <keyword id="6354742" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Flipkart">Flipkart</keyword> and <keyword id="18635" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Amazon">Amazon</keyword>, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=kishore+biyani&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">Kishore Biyani</a> is gathering all his might to race past them. 
 
In a new initiative, Biyani-led <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=future+group&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">Future Group</a> is rolling out discounts for its customers like never before and launching an eight-day discount scheme at <keyword id="6357823" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Big-Bazaar">Big Bazaar</keyword>, India’s largest supermarket chain. 
 
Under ‘Monthly Bachat Bazaar’ (Monthly Savings Scheme), customers who buy items for Rs 2,500 will get cash bonuses and vouchers across segments worth Rs 2,000 from June onward. 
 
To increase footfall, the vouchers will be redeemable for the rest of the month. 
 
Biyani told his employees about a customer-reward system, calling it the next wave of growth for the 270 or so Big Bazaar outlets. 
 
"We wanted to bring together all the might of Big Bazaar in an effort to get new customers and at the same time reward existing ones. Also, this will influence shoppers to look for options across categories instead of just food and groceries,” Sadashiv Nayak, CEO of Big Bazaar, told ET. 
 Not only Big Bazaar, but Reliance Fresh and <keyword id="6369697" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Godrej">Godrej</keyword> Nature's Basket have also launched multiple initiatives to grab the market share. 
 
"Online grocery retailing might work mostly at urban centres but one needs significant scale to make it work profitably. There is still five to 10 years before online players get into smaller towns with grocery retailing. Big Bazaar may be impacted to an extent but not exponentially," Ruchi Sally, director at Elargir Solutions, a retail consultancy, told ET.

Big Bazaar is gathering all might to race past e-commerce rivals; is launching 8-day discount scheme

After failing to get a response from the central government over <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=foreign+direct+investment+%28FDI%29+">foreign direct investment (FDI)</a> norms with e-Commerce players in India, brick-and-mortar retailers are going to approach the <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Delhi+High+Court+">Delhi High Court</a> once again. 
 "We did meet the government once and nothing happened after that. We will have to take a call as a group," said Kishore Biyani, founder of <keyword id="44949" type="CITY" weightage="80" keywordseo="Future-group">Future Group</keyword>, India's largest network of retail store chains. He said there should be clarity in the policy. 
 In their quest for parity in <keyword id="44528" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="FDI">FDI</keyword> norms with <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=e-Commerce+">e-Commerce</a> firms, which have attracted billions of dollars in overseas funding using the marketplace model, traditional retailers had already approached the court in May. 
 
They contend that while India bars FDI in e-Commerce firms that sell products directly to consumers, foreign companies are allowed to operate online marketplaces that offer a platform for sale of global brands, putting them at a disadvantage. 
 India allows 51% FDI in multi-brand retailing, with a whole host of conditions including 30% mandatory local sourcing and $100 million upfront investment. "We will wait for another few days but if it (the government) still doesn't get a clarified policy, we will have no other option than to go for legal recourse," said <keyword id="113284" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Kumar-Rajagopalan">Kumar Rajagopalan</keyword>, chief executive of the <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Retailers+Association+of+India">Retailers Association of India</a>. 
 
RAI, an industry body representing over 1,000 retailers, including Shoppers Stop, Reliance Retail and the Future Group, filed a petition against the government in mid-May asking for a level playing field in terms of foreign investment. 
 On May 21, the <keyword id="6355014" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="Delhi-High-Court">Delhi High Court</keyword> converted the petition into a representation, directing the association to discuss the matter with the government, failing which they could approach the court again within four months. Since then, associations of mobile and footwear sellers have also filed similar petitions alleging FDI violations. 
 
Biyani had earlier said that India's physical retailers and the marketplace model operated by foreign funded e-Commerce companies in India are largely similar — the only difference is the process of smart accounting by <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=online+retailers">online retailers</a>. He also said ecommerce companies are violating FDI laws "in the spirit and letter". 
 
Retailers say they will push the case in the Delhi court, once again highlighting how e-Commerce companies are allegedly circumventing India's FDI regulations. "e-Commerce is only supposed to translate the physical world into the Internet world and therefore deserves to be similarly regulated as commerce in the physical world," said Rajagopalan. 
 
"Though the outcome of ecommerce and retail in the physical world is the same, the treatment meted out by the government of India to the two retail segments in the same market is inequitable," he added.

And, whatever inventory is still available, is only there until it runs out since Reliance isn’t taking any new orders either. The reason for removing Reliance products from Amazon India and Flipkart is because Ambani is reportedly trying to create exclusivity around the brands that comes under its umbrella. Sources told the Economic Times that Reliance Trends and <keyword id="74639" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Reliance-Brands">Reliance Brands</keyword> have also reportedly been told to speed up the ‘phasing-out process’ from non-Reliance marketplaces in the coming weeks. Tripped by the new e-commerce rules brought in by the Indian government, the two companies put those negotiations on hold. However, within a couple of weeks, Future Group's Kishore Biyani has found another keen buyer, the American footwear brand, Skechers. Biyani <a href="https://economictimes.indiatimes.com/industry/services/retail/skechers-buys-future-groups-49-in-joint-venture-for-independent-run/articleshow/67968514.cms" data-type="tilCustomLink" target="_blank">reportedly</a> sold his 49% stake in the existing joint venture to Skechers for a sum of ₹5.8 billion. Skechers now <a href="https://entrackr.com/2019/02/skechers-exit-future-group/?utm_campaign=fullarticle&amp;utm_medium=referral&amp;utm_source=inshorts" data-type="tilCustomLink" target="_blank">plans</a> to open 80-100 more stores, of which the company will directly own 20 stores. Amazon had <a href="https://entrackr.com/2018/11/amazon-acquire-9-5-stake-future-retail/" target="_blank">signed a term sheet </a> to buy anywhere between 10% and 15% stake in Future Group for up to $700 million in August 2018. In September last year, Amazon along with PE firm Samara Capital signed a deal to acquire food and grocery retail chain More. Less than a year before that, the Jeff Bezos-led firm had bought 5% stake in Shoppers Stop for $26.35 million. Physical retailers are the immediate benefactors India's new e-commerce rules. The new norms are expected to boost sales for brick-and-mortar stores by taking away the discounts available to consumers online. CRISIL has estimated that it could increase revenue for offline retailers by ₹100 billion to ₹120 billion by 2020. The promise of India's retail market is no secret to other companies either. “Few markets match the potential for growth like India does, which is why we entered the market initially, and recently decided to buy the minority stake in our joint venture,” said David Weinberg, chief operating officer of Skechers. For Amazon, the challenges in India are only rising. The company had to add new sellers and delist about 500,000 products from its sellers <keyword id="2682122" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Cloudtail">Cloudtail</keyword>, Appario and Shoppers Stop as the govt prohibited online marketplaces from selling products through companies in which they own stakes. With the new rules, global players like Amazon or the Walmart-Flipkart entity, are barred from selling products from vendors they have own a stake in. According to the Morgan Stanley report, Flipkart will have to do away with 25% of its products on the platform. The new rules have mounted tremendous pressure on both Amazon and Flipkart, which together command over <a href="https://economictimes.indiatimes.com/small-biz/startups/newsbuzz/amazon-india-reportedly-closing-in-on-flipkart/articleshow/63407725.cms">60%</a> of the market share in Indian e-commerce. <ul><li>China will remain the most advanced market both in size and maturity, yet the highest growth will be seen in developing markets such as India and Brazil.</li><li>Nearly eight out of ten social media users in India use <keyword id="623994" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="social-commerce" source="Orion">social commerce</keyword> to make purchases.</li><li>Despite being a mature market, almost half of consumers in India are making more impulse purchases than planned purchases.</li><li>Shoppers in China, India and Brazil care more about features that help them discover and evaluate potential purchases – both areas where social features enhance the existing experience.</li></ul>A new study by Accenture found that the $492 billion global social commerce industry is expected to grow three times as fast as traditional ecommerce to $1.2 trillion by 2025. Growth is predicted to be driven primarily by Gen Z and Millennial social media users, accounting for 62% of global social commerce spend by 2025. According to Accenture’s report, “Why Shopping’s Set for a Social Revolution,” social commerce means a person’s entire shopping experience — from product discovery to the check-out process — takes place on a social media platform. Just under two thirds (64%) of social media users surveyed said they made a social commerce purchase in the last year, which Accenture estimates to reflect nearly 2 billion social buyers globally. “Driven by mobile-first consumer preferences and the launch of new hyperlocal social commerce platforms, the emerging success of social commerce in India is a testimony to the power of people and communities,” said Anurag Gupta, Managing Director and Lead - Strategy &amp; Consulting, Accenture in India. “To take advantage of this growing opportunity, it will be crucial that these social commerce platforms offer consumers the right experience built around trust and satisfaction, and broaden their appeal through the use of local languages and video interfaces. Furthermore, brands need to work with a thriving ecosystem comprising platforms, creators, influencers, resellers that helps users discover and evaluate potential purchases.” <div type="image" title="image001 (1)" msid="88685169" hostid="261"></div>While the opportunity is significant for large businesses, individuals and smaller brands also stand to benefit. More than half (59%) of social buyers surveyed said they are more likely to support small and medium-sized businesses through social commerce than when shopping through ecommerce websites, Furthermore, 63% said they are more likely to buy from the same seller again, showing the benefits of social commerce in building loyalty and driving repeat purchases. Half of social media users surveyed, however, indicate they are concerned that social commerce purchases will not be protected or refunded properly, making trust the biggest barrier to adoption, as it was for eCommerce at its beginning. Who is Buying What Accenture’s report found that by 2025 the highest number of social commerce purchases globally are expected in clothing (18% of all social commerce by 2025), consumer electronics (13%) and home décor (7%). Fresh food and snack items also represent a large product category (13%) although sales are nearly exclusive to China. Beauty and personal care, although smaller in terms of total social commerce sales, is predicted to quickly gain ground on e-commerce and capture over 40% of digital spend on average for this category in key markets by 2025. Among the study’s other findings: <ul><li>Consumers in developing countries are more likely to use social commerce and do so often. Eight out of ten social media users in China use social commerce to make purchases for a given category, while the majority of social media users in the U.K. and U.S. have yet to make a purchase via social commerce.</li><li>Shoppers in China, India, and Brazil care more about features that help them discover and evaluate potential purchases while those in the U.K. and U.S. place more importance on pricing and discounts. </li><li>Trust is more important to older generations than younger generations. Older shoppers emphasize security features and value brand familiarity while younger generations are attracted to livestreams and put more faith in buyer reviews.</li></ul>
