Mahindra Lifespace appoints Arvind Subramanian as MD, CEO

Set up on Public Private Partnership (PPP) mode, 15 <keyword id="627109" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Indian-Institutes-of-Information-Technology">Indian Institutes of Information Technology</keyword> (<keyword id="758110" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="IIITs">IIITs</keyword>) may get degree-granting powers this year. The <keyword id="44734" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Indian-Government">Indian Government</keyword> is in a hurry to pass an ordinance that will enable these IIITs to give out degrees to its first batch of students passing out this year. If the ordinance is not passed, this may delay degree granting process, thus, leaving future of the students in balance. IIITs in Vadodara, Kota, Chittoor, Guwahati and Tiruchirappalli to get their degrees this year itself. As per ET, the human resource development ministry has already moved the ordinance proposal to the law ministry. Once cleared by the law ministry, it will be taken to the Cabinet and then to the President for approval. Of the 20 IIITs planned to be established on PPP mode, 15 are already functional. “There has been a lot of pressure since last year to address the issue as job prospects of hundreds of students will be affected in the absence of a proper degree. However, the bill was held up last year amid differences between PMO and <keyword id="51613" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="hrd-ministry">HRD ministry</keyword> over the level of autonomy to the institutes and the need to expedite the legislation,” sources told ET. The bill introduced in <keyword id="6355187" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Lok-Sabha">Lok Sabha</keyword> seeks to declare the 15 IITs on PPP mode as 'Institutions of national Importance' with powers to award degrees. This will entitle them to use the nomenclature of Bachelor of Technology (BTech) or Master of Technology (MTech) or PhD degree.

For fourth year B-Tech student <keyword id="4048862" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="yash-choudhari">Yash Choudhari</keyword>, who hails from Maharashtra, scoring a 100 percentile in the CAT exam meant he would get his big ticket to his dream college - IIM Ahmedabad or Bangalore.

 But it's a different story for another topper <keyword id="13079" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Rahul-Sharma">Rahul Sharma</keyword> who hails from Delhi. Sharma didn't want to get into an IIM, because he is already an IIM-Ahmedabad Graduate. That means he was taking the CAT test for the second time, but he had an entirely different purpose to appear for the exams this year. 
 Ask him, and he says he wanted to teach his students how to score well. Having successfully cleared the CAT exam earlier, and graduating from IIM Ahmedabad in 2011, Rahul spends his time counselling and coaching students at <keyword id="70041" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Career-Launcher">Career Launcher</keyword> institute in Delhi. 
 
He took the exam to score a perfect 100, because till he didn't have it to his credit, how would his students consider him to be their idol. 
 
Now, meet another CAT topper from Kolkata- Nilanjan Dutta. He too scored a perfect 100 percentile in CAT 2016. 
 
An XLRI Jamshedhpur passout, Dutta currently works as Business Consultant with an IT Firm. He too topped the CAT exams, but says he has no plans of taking admissions in any of the IIMs. Satisfied with his current job, he says he just appeared for the exam for his self-satisfaction! 
 
Dutta did not taking any coaching on purpose, and wanted to prove his self-worth. "In 2011, I gave my first attempt and scored 99.43 percentile. I just wanted to get 100 percentile for once." 
 
His takeaway from CAT 2016 and a sincere advice to future aspirants is -“A lot of students often end up wasting time over tough questions and become over-ambitious about attempting more questions. Instead, think of it carefully and attempt just the number of questions needed.” 
 
Choudhari, meanwhile, feels that the CAT test has become easier over the years. When he appeared for it back in 2008, "it was still on pen and paper. Now, it has to be taken online". He didn't have too much of an advice for students, but his takeaway was - there is a need for teachers/coaches to keep up with the times.

Almost 20 students including him have scored 100 percentile in CAT exams this time. 
 
This BITS-Pilani student attributed his success to the number of mock tests he had taken while preparing for the test. 
 
“I completely relied on self-studies and did not take get enrolled in any coaching centres,” The Indian Express quoted Chakraborty, who is working with a private finance services company as an intern. 
 
“I took 86 mock tests for preparation and trusted almost 90 per cent on the analysis,” he said. 
 He kept the balance between his studies and CAT preparation by utilising his free time during weekends. He would attempt three mock tests in two days to gain confidence. This young lad now sees his future in entrepreneurship and aspires to pursue MBA from IIM-Ahmedabad, but not too soon. In his final year, Chakraborty got an offer from his dream company — <keyword id="574638" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="McKinsey-Company">McKinsey &amp; Company</keyword>. 
 
“I may opt for the deferred admission policy and will join the Indian Institute of Management later. I wish to become a consultant,” he said. 
 Meanwhile, Unlike Chakraborty, another topper Yash Choudhari has decided to turn down his job offer if he makes it to <keyword id="19483" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="IIM-ahmedabad">IIM Ahmedabad</keyword> or IIM Bangalore. He hails from <keyword id="49077" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Kolhapur">Kolhapur</keyword> in Maharashtra. 
 
For this fourth year B-Tech student from College of Engineering in Pune, securing a 100 percentile in CAT in his first attempt wasn't a surprising moment. 
 
"I had been preparing for the exam for 7-8 months, and I was expecting a 100 percentile," he said. While solving test series and mocks for the CAT, Choudhari said he would always score the highest in Quant, while Verbal was his weakest area. Ironically, he secured the highest score in the Verbal section, and second highest in Quant. 
 
His word of advice to CAT aspirants is - “No matter how much ever you prepare, CAT will always be a step ahead of you. There is always an element of surprise. Do not try to solve all the questions in a set. It is sheer waste of time." 
 
He concluded saying - "A smart student would know which section is tougher than the previous years' papers. So, don't waste your time. Solve what you know and move ahead..."

We are aware of poor job readiness. As we explore the web of issues starting from mis-aligned curriculum, poor teaching quality, and lacking formative (K12) capabilities, lack of exposure continues to be a very important area. 
 A continuous feedback or rather criticism from companies that hire young <keyword id="6356184" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="talent">talent</keyword> is the sheer lack of exposure in our young graduates. Internships not only help them in understanding what can be expected of them when they start working full time but also allows them to learn and build their skill set for the same. 
 
Internships also become the crucial link between the academia and the industry by giving exposure of a job or sector to students. Till the time students take up internships, their understanding of the corporate world is restricted to what they are taught in classrooms. 
 
Internships improve their understanding of the role/sector and guide them towards making the right career move in the future. It is a general consensus amongst students that internships help them develop essential on-the-job skills and are an important test of their ability to do well within that particular sector/role. 
 
Our educational ecosystem has neglected internships for a long period of time. Despite internships being a part of every course curriculum, providing access to right kind of internships has been fairly difficult.
