First, it's a supermoon, meaning it will appear slightly bigger and brighter in the night sky than a typical full moon.</p><p>Second, it coincides with the last <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/see-strawberry-moon-partial-lunar-eclipse-friday-2020-6">partial lunar eclipse</a> of the year. So, depending on your location, you'll be able to see Earth's shadow sweep across a small part of the harvest moon when it rises Tuesday evening.</p><h2 id="b9f7bcc6-7b06-48e3-a8b1-8f8194454618"><strong>The best time to watch the super harvest moon and partial lunar eclipse</strong></h2><p>The <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/september-harvest-moon-last-supermoon-when-best-time-to-see-2023-9">harvest moon is the full moon</a> that occurs nearest to the first day of autumn. It typically rises in the early evening around sunset, which meant farmers could finish harvesting their fall crops by its bright moonlight, hence the name.</p><p>This year, the harvest moon will officially be at its fullest on September 17 at 10:35 p.m. ET, according to <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://science.nasa.gov/solar-system/skywatching/the-next-full-moon-is-a-partial-lunar-eclipse-a-supermoon-the-corn-moon-and-the-harvest-moon/">NASA</a>. But the harvest moon will appear full for about three days from Monday evening through Thursday morning, NASA adds. </p><p>The best time to catch any full moon, including the harvest moon, is <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/super-blood-moon-lunar-eclipse-photos-2021-5#countries-in-the-asian-pacific-rim-including-china-and-indonesia-saw-the-eclipse-just-after-moonrise-2">right around moonrise</a>. </p><div type="image" title="harvest moon" height="1648" width="2200" msid="113372044" hostid="261" sizebytes="69298"></div><p>That's because the moon looks larger and adopts a yellow-orangish hue when it's close to the horizon. No one knows why this illusion occurs, <a target="_blank" href="https://science.nasa.gov/solar-system/moon/the-moon-illusion-why-does-the-moon-look-so-big-sometimes/">according to NASA</a>, but it makes for some spectacular moon gazing and photos.</p><p>The moon will rise over the east horizon around 7 p.m. local time on Tuesday for most of the contiguous US, but check <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.timeanddate.com/moon/">TimeandDate</a> for exactly when moonrise is in your area. The eclipse will start at 8:41 p.m. ET, according to NASA, but you likely won't see anything happen until closer to the eclipse's peak at 10:44 p.m. ET, when the maximum area of the moon's surface will be in shadow.</p><p>A partial lunar eclipse is when <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-lunar-eclipses-work-earth-moon-red-shadow-2018-7">Earth passes between the sun and moon</a>, casting its shadow across a certain percentage of the lunar surface. The more the Earth, sun, and moon are aligned, the greater portion of the moon the Earth eclipses.</p><div type="image" title="A lunar eclipse with a statue in front" height="683" width="1024" msid="113372045" hostid="261" sizebytes="15568"></div><p>For this particular eclipse, about 8.4% of the moon will be immersed in shadow, per NASA. So, at the time of the eclipse's peak, you should be able to notice that a small sliver looks like it's missing from the top of the moon.</p><p>"The only impact the eclipse has on seeing the moon is that part of the moon will be dimmer than the part that is outside of the shadow of the Earth," <span>Noah Petro, a research scientist at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center, told BI over email.</span></p><p>Tuesday's partial eclipse is the last lunar eclipse of the year. The next lunar eclipse will be a total eclipse on March 14, 2025.</p><p>Just about everyone worldwide can enjoy the upcoming supermoon but only regions of North America, South America, Europe, and Africa will have a chance to see the lunar eclipse. <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.timeanddate.com/eclipse/lunar/2024-september-18">TimeandDate</a> has a map showing which portions of the globe will get the best eclipse show.</p><h2 id="4678bbea-bf93-41a2-9445-1b83e47703af">The harvest moon is the second supermoon of 2024</h2><div type="image" title="red harvest moon rising over eastern horizon with a city in front of it" height="681" width="1024" msid="113372043" hostid="261" sizebytes="13854"></div><p>This year's harvest moon is the second in a series of four consecutive supermoons, according to <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://earthsky.org/astronomy-essentials/what-is-a-supermoon/">EarthSky.</a></p><p>Supermoons occur when a full (or new) moon coincides with perigee — the point in the moon's orbit when it's closest to Earth.</p><p>But that distance isn't always the same value because the moon's orbit is elliptical, not perfectly circular. Therefore, supermoons vary in how much larger and brighter they may look.</p><p>In general, though, supermoons appear about 7% larger and 15% brighter than a typical full moon, Larry Wasserman, an astronomer at Lowell Observatory in Arizona, told Business Insider via email.</p><div type="image" title="supermoon rises over a city at night" height="682" width="1024" msid="113372048" hostid="261" sizebytes="45990"></div><p>This year's harvest moon will be about 222,131 miles from Earth at perigee. To compare, the closest supermoon so far this century, in November 2016, was at a distance of 221,524 miles, according to <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://earthsky.org/sky-archive/closest-supermoon-since-1948/">EarthSky</a>.</p><p>The next two full moons, on October 17 and November 15, will also be supermoons. In particular, October's full moon — called the Hunter's moon — will be the largest supermoon of the year.</p>

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Photos of the moon can often turn out disappointing.</li><li>During Tuesday's <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/september-harvest-supermoon-lunar-eclipse-when-best-time-to-see-2024-9">supermoon and partial lunar eclipse</a>, there are ways to capture great photos.</li></ul><p>If you've ever taken a picture of a big, <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-to-see-lyrid-meteor-shower-during-pink-supermoon-2024-4">bright full moon</a> and been disappointed with the pale, tiny object glowing in your photo, you're not alone.</p><p><a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/photos-astronomy-photographer-of-the-year-2020-7">Professional astrophotographers</a> use telescopes, high-powered lenses, and expensive cameras to produce incredible images of the sun, moon, and stars.</p><p>But even if you don't have a digital camera or extensive photography experience, there are a few steps you can take so your photos capture the brilliance of the night sky.</p><p>Moreover, Tuesday is a perfect time to test these skills because a beautiful full, <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/september-harvest-moon-last-supermoon-when-best-time-to-see-2023-9">harvest supermoon</a> will rise above the eastern horizon around 7 p.m. local time.</p><p>Here are some mistakes you may be making <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/solar-eclipse-photo-advice-pro-photographer-2024-4">while photographing</a> the moon and how to fix them, according to two professional astrophotographers.</p><h2 id="fad9b505-dffe-4604-9d0b-69ba7ee3226f">Mistake 1: Taking photos at the wrong time</h2><div type="image" title="The moon doing a lunar eclipse appears red" height="1500" width="2328" msid="113435948" hostid="261" sizebytes="52776"></div><p>"The moon can be as easy or as difficult as you want it to be to photograph. It just depends on what kind of photo you want to get," astrophotographer <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://cosmicbackground.io/">Andrew McCarthy</a> told Business Insider. </p><p>If you want to capture how large the moon looks, take photos at moonrise. That's when the moon is closest to the horizon, and you can include trees or buildings for <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/national-geographic-photographer-phone-photography-tips-2023-3">context and scale</a>.</p><p>When the moon is overhead, it's harder to get other features in your shot. "You don't have that context, so it appears a little bit smaller," McCarthy said. The silver lining is you can <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/saturn-moon-conjunction-smartphone-pictures-2019-4">get better detail</a> because you're shooting through less atmosphere and the photos will be clearer.</p><p>Tuesday's harvest supermoon will rise right around the same time as sunset, making it an especially great opportunity for some phone shots. Taking photos closer to sunset gives you more lighting compared to later at night, which will make taking a cellphone picture easier.</p><p>"My recommendation is, if you are limited with your tools and just using your phone, try to shoot the supermoon early," McCarthy said.</p><p>You might notice that it can be difficult to keep multiple objects — like the moon and buildings — in focus. But that's not necessarily a bad thing: "Sometimes it's kind of cool if the moon's the only thing that's sharp, and there's a city landscape that's kind of blurred a little bit," astrophotographer <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://joncarmichael.com/">Jon Carmichael</a> said.</p><p>But if you really want everything to appear in focus, you can also try taking separate pictures of the moon in focus and the buildings in focus and editing them together later, he said.</p><h2 id="bb454343-1218-48d5-b0e5-a06972aa8e9f">Mistake 2: Not using a tripod</h2><div type="image" title="Two people silhouetted against the sky setting up photography equipment on a mountain" height="730" width="1024" msid="113435952" hostid="261" sizebytes="10920"></div><p>Even steady hands can shake a little when taking photos. <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-to-take-great-travel-photos-solo-trip-content-tips">Setting up a tripod</a> can make a big difference, Carmichael said.</p><p>"If you're looking for the sharpest shot possible, you'd be surprised at how easy it is for the photo to turn out blurry" without one, he said.</p><p>The tripod doesn't need to be fancy, he added. Even a basic yet sturdy one for smartphones should still allow you to capture a clearer shot.</p><h2 id="641544d4-51c3-4388-8511-18698f3b26ed">Mistake 3: Not editing your photo</h2><div type="image" title="A supermoon rises by a fortress in Italy" height="683" width="1024" msid="113435950" hostid="261" sizebytes="51830"></div><p>Sometimes our photos just don't live up to what <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/orionids-meteor-shooting-stars-full-moon-2021-10">we're seeing in the sky</a>. "There's what you see, what the camera sees, and then there's what's actually there, and those things can be different," McCarthy said.</p><p>For instance, when the <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/full-moon-names-meaning-origin-lunar-calendar-2023">moon is on the horizon</a>, it may appear orange or yellow, but that brilliant color can be difficult to capture in a photo.</p><p>McCarthy recommends<strong> </strong><a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/phone-photography-mistakes-how-to-fix-tips-from-photojournalist-2023-7">underexposing your photos</a>, which can help capture the color you're seeing. Many built-in phone apps will let you change the exposure by tapping or dragging the screen. Try and strike a balance so you don't make the rest of your image too dark.</p><p>Then, play around with the image in editing software with something like Photoshop's curves tool to make the color more saturated.</p><p>Also, if you're feeling slightly more ambitious, you can stack multiple photos.<strong> </strong>McCarthy does this in a tool called <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.autostakkert.com/">AutoStackkert!</a> to sharpen the image and bring out finer details than are visible in a single photo.</p><h2 id="533bcf01-b745-4797-960b-e564f1070d57">Tips for shooting the moon with a smartphone</h2><div type="image" title="A supermoon rising behind a bridge" height="576" width="1024" msid="113435949" hostid="261" sizebytes="15682"></div><p>Just pointing and shooting on your smartphone may not give you the look you want. "It will try to apply automatic settings to get the shot," McCarthy said of your phone's camera.</p><p>You need to control the exposure. Since the sun is illuminating the moon, it provides a bright source of light. "That's why the moon tends to get blown out in photos a lot, especially photos taken with a cellphone," he said. The image turns out overexposed: too bright and with a lot of details lost.</p><p>When properly exposed, you can see features like the dark, blotchy <a target="_blank" href="https://moon.nasa.gov/observe-the-moon-night/resources/moon-map/">lunar maria</a>, McCarthy said, where basaltic lava once flowed. Sometimes just tapping on the moon in your camera app will help give you the right exposure. Holding down the screen for a few seconds also lets you adjust the exposure on some Samsung phones while iPhone users can use the sun icon as a slider.</p><div type="image" title="An iPhone with a picture of a flower on the screen and a yellow box and slider with a sun on it" height="1000" width="1500" msid="113435953" hostid="261" sizebytes="32240"></div><p>You can also try a couple of iPhone apps that Carmichael recommends, like <a target="_blank" href="https://apps.apple.com/us/app/camera-pro-camera-editor/id1313580627">Camera+</a> (free) and <a target="_blank" href="https://apps.apple.com/us/app/procamera-professional-camera/id694647259?ign-mpt=uo%3D4">ProCamera</a> ($17.99). These can help you make manual adjustments to get the right exposure for your image.</p><p>Business Insider's Les Shu, who spent years reviewing photography equipment, recommends an app that can shoot long-exposure photography, such as the <a target="_blank" href="https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=de.seebi.deepskycamera&amp;hl=en_US&amp;pli=1">DeepSkyCamera app</a> (free), for Android phones. The technique helps create sharper images.</p><p>Finally, both McCarthy and Carmichael said to use optical zoom instead of digital zoom. It varies by phone model, but in general, you'll want to keep the zoom below 5X so it's using the camera lens instead of software. With higher zooms, "you're basically having the phone enlarge the photo," Carmichael said, instead of truly zooming in.</p><h2 id="189cee2a-4d52-4fab-b782-cb21a4cf3ccc">Tips for shooting the moon with a camera</h2><div type="image" title="A woman uses a telescope with a camera to photograph the sun" height="683" width="1024" msid="113435951" hostid="261" sizebytes="31296"></div><p>With digital cameras, Carmichael recommends taking photos manually. This lets you control the amount of light hitting the camera's sensor.</p><p>"If you're shooting in any kind of auto setting, then you're making the camera decide for you," Carmichael said.</p><p>When shooting manually, you'll want to play around with a few different settings on your camera including the aperture size, shutter speed, and ISO:</p><ul><li>The aperture size is how wide the camera's shutter opens.</li><li>The <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-to-take-great-photographs-2016-1">shutter speed</a> is how quickly the shutter opens.</li><li>The ISO is the camera sensor's sensitivity to light.</li></ul><p>In general, Carmichael suggests starting out with making adjustments to your aperture setting, using a fast shutter speed and low ISO.</p><p>"The higher that ISO goes, the noisier and grainier the photo will end up being," Carmichael said. If the photos look blurry, you can bump up the ISO, he said.</p>

But our ancient ancestors from millennia ago weren't so certain, and that was bad news for some scientists.</p><p>In the 21st century BCE, China's emporer <a target="_blank" href="https://eclipse2017.nasa.gov/eclipse-history">reportedly</a> had two astronomers beheaded for not <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/total-eclipse-solar-power-generation-states-outside-path-totality-2024-3">predicting a total eclipse</a>.</p><p>Over the centuries, total eclipses became less dire and more of an opportunity to test scientific theories and forge <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/helio-year-sun-solar-system-probe-eclipse-events-2024-1">new discoveries</a>.</p><p>Here are seven times a total solar eclipse has helped advance human science.</p><h2>1. Measuring Earth's rotation</h2><div type="image" title="Aerial view of planet Earth covered in clouds." height="1411" width="2124" msid="109088911" hostid="261" sizebytes="77030"></div><p>Some of the earliest suspected records of eclipses <a target="_blank" href="https://science.nasa.gov/eclipses/history/">date back</a> thousands of years.</p><p>Some experts have suggested<strong> </strong>petroglyphs or rock carvings found on a monument in Ireland reference an eclipse that took place on November 30 in the year 3,340 BCE. Others have <a target="_blank" href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/wonk/wp/2017/08/18/this-5000-year-old-stone-carving-may-be-the-worlds-first-drawing-of-an-eclipse/">expressed</a> skepticism.</p><p>Human-made markings on tortoise shells from China and a Babylonian tablet from over 3,000 years ago may also contain ancient references to eclipses.</p><p>Though these records are open to interpretation, scholars have <a target="_blank" href="https://eclipse.gsfc.nasa.gov/SEhelp/rotation.html">studied</a> historical descriptions of eclipses for centuries. It's how 18th-century astronomer Edmond Halley first realized the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/what-if-earth-stopped-spinning">Earth's rotation</a> has slowed over millennia.</p><h2>2. Discovering what causes eclipses</h2><div type="image" title="Engraving of  Pericles stands next to Anaxagoras, who is sitting on steps next to columns in Ancient Greece" height="1500" width="2263" msid="109088912" hostid="261" sizebytes="1159624"></div><p>Two modern scholars <a target="_blank" href="https://daily.jstor.org/anaxagoras-and-the-eclipse-the-first-to-get-it-right/">give</a> Greek philosopher Anaxagoras of Clazomenae credit for figuring out the moon's role in eclipses, calling him "perhaps the first empirical astronomer."</p><p>He likely developed his theories after witnessing an annular, or "<a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/october-solar-eclipse-annular-ring-of-fire-where-how-watch-2023-10">ring of fire</a>," eclipse on February 17, 478 BCE. While he got some of the science right, his overall understanding of the solar system was a product of its time.</p><p>Anaxagoras, for example, thought that air pressure kept the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/what-living-on-flat-earth-would-look-like-2017-11">flat Earth</a> aloft at the center of the rotating sun, moon, and stars. Despite that error, he worked out the basic mechanics behind eclipses.</p><p>Anaxagoras correctly believed the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-to-watch-da-vinci-glow-ghostly-shine-moon-phenomenon-2023-5">moon reflected</a> the sun's light. He was also accurate in his theories that when the moon moved in front of the sun, it caused a solar eclipse. Similarly, when the Earth was in between the sun and moon, there would be a lunar eclipse.</p><p>He also used the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-lunar-eclipses-work-earth-moon-red-shadow-2018-7">moon's shadow</a><strong> </strong>during an eclipse<strong> </strong>to estimate its size, but his calculations gave him a much smaller answer than reality.</p><h2>3. Estimating the moon's distance from Earth</h2><div type="image" title="A person is seated looking through a telescope with astrological instruments nearby in Ancient Greece" height="1500" width="2172" msid="109088915" hostid="261" sizebytes="589214"></div><p>On March 14, 189 BCE, a total solar eclipse swept over what is now northern Turkey. Greek astronomer Hipparchus would have just been a child at the time, but it's possible he saw the event.</p><p>Years later, Hipparchus may have used secondhand accounts of that same eclipse to make one of the era's most mathematically accurate estimates of the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/mind-boggling-nasa-photo-shows-moon-distance-from-earth-2022-10">moon's distance from Earth</a>.</p><p>Though Hipparchus' direct writings are lost, a 4th-century scholar <a target="_blank" href="https://journals.sagepub.com/doi/10.1177/0021828618817175">detailed</a> how he used the information.</p><p>The astronomer estimated the distance between where the total eclipse was in modern day Turkey and Alexandria, Egypt — where a fifth of the sun showed — to make his calculation.</p><p>Based on his math, Hipparchus offered a few ranges, including a mean distance<strong> </strong>of about 281,387 miles.</p><p>He wasn't terribly far off. The moon is about 238,855 miles away.</p><h2>4. Predicting the path of an eclipse</h2><div type="image" title="A map of England showing the path of an 18th century eclipse" height="2445" width="2000" msid="109088917" hostid="261" sizebytes="708824"></div><p>In the 11th or 12th century, Mayan astronomers made a remarkable prediction for their time: They calculated that a total solar eclipse would occur in 1991, and their prediction was accurate to within a day.</p><p>It would be centuries until humans made a more accurate prediction. In the 18th century,<strong><em> </em></strong><a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/edmond-halley-solar-lunar-eclipse-manuscripts-sell-auction-2023-12">Edmond Halley</a>, better known for discovering a comet with his name, made a <a target="_blank" href="https://www.theguardian.com/science/the-h-word/2015/may/03/halleys-eclipse-newtonian-selling-science-history">map</a> predicting the path of the May 3, 1715 solar eclipse with extreme accuracy.</p><p>Others made maps before him, but Halley based his prediction on <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/isaac-newton-burnt-notes-pyramids-apocalypse-theology-sold-auction-2020-12">Isaac Newton</a>'s theory of universal gravitation, which helped him pinpoint the eclipse's timing to within four minutes.</p><h2>5. It took an eclipse for an astronomer to discover it.</p><p>French astronomer Pierre Jules César Janssen had <a target="_blank" href="https://www.smithsonianmag.com/history/how-scientists-discovered-helium-first-alien-element-1868-180970057/">traveled</a> to Guntur, India just for the August 18, 1868 eclipse. He was using a spectroscope, a prism-like device for separating sunlight into a spectrum.</p><p>Janssen saw a yellow line with a wavelength unlike any other element. Around the same time, English astronomer Norman Lockyer developed an instrument for viewing the sun even without an eclipse. He saw the same line.</p><p>Lockyer called the mysterious element helium. It took a couple of decades for scientists to see it on Earth, during experiments on <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/italy-skeleton-of-a-roman-killed-steps-from-sea-fled-vesuvius-eruption-2021-12">Mount Vesuvius</a> lava and uranium.</p><h2>6. Proof of Einstein's theory of relativity</h2><div type="image" title="A building holds a large piece of astronomical equipment with a long tube and rectangular box" height="1500" width="2244" msid="109088922" hostid="261" sizebytes="221628"></div><p>Astronomer James Craig Watson was certain he'd <a target="_blank" href="https://www.american-eclipse.com/">found</a> proof of a new planet during the 1878 eclipse. Supposedly located between the Sun and Mercury, Vulcan was only visible when the moon blocked the giant star.</p><p>Several more eclipses passed without anyone finding evidence of Vulcan. In 1915, Albert Einstein <a target="_blank" href="https://www.nbcnews.com/mach/science/einstein-showed-newton-was-wrong-about-gravity-now-scientists-are-ncna1038671">explained</a> Mercury's unusual orbit with his general <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/albert-einstein-thought-experiments-2023-10">theory of relativity</a>. It fit the data better than a mysterious, difficult-to-spot extra planet.</p><p>Despite this evidence, Einstein's theory didn't receive scientific proof until the May 29, 1919 eclipse. The physicist had said the sun's gravity would bend light from nearby stars.</p><p>In 1919, expeditions traveled to Principe, an island off the coast of Africa, and Brazil. While the moon blocked the sun, the astronomers took photographs.</p><p>The stars seemed to have shifted locations compared to the reference photos. The apparent new locations showed the sun was bending the light within the measurements that <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/russell-einstein-manifesto-nuclear-weapons-bombs-danger-2024-2">Einstein predicted</a>.</p><h2>7. Studying eclipses from space</h2><div type="image" title="A large antenna dish beneath a solar eclipse" height="1383" width="2055" msid="109088924" hostid="261" sizebytes="79024"></div><p>Gemini 12 astronauts Jim Lovell and <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/buzz-aldrin-thoughts-lunar-module-moon-liftoff-2017-7">Buzz Aldrin</a> were the first humans to see a total eclipse from space. The November 12, 1966 eclipse moved from Peru to Brazil, and the astronauts hovered near the path of totality.</p><p>It was a coincidence that they were close enough to see it, according to <a target="_blank" href="https://www.smithsonianmag.com/smart-news/a-history-of-total-solar-eclipses-seen-by-astronauts-from-outer-space-180983909/">Smithsonian Magazine</a>. Aldrin's photos were unfocused and a bit disappointing.</p><p>Four years later, TV networks <a target="_blank" href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o8i9qNslaJA">broadcast</a> the "eclipse of the century," full of images of the event. NASA also launched over two dozen rockets to study <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/why-sunscreen-is-not-enough-to-protect-you-from-sun-2023-9">UV radiation</a> and solar X-rays during the phenomenon.</p><p>The agency still uses rockets to gather data during eclipses and will launch three on April 8.</p>

7 times a total solar eclipse revolutionized science 

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Online searches reporting eye discomfort spiked during the eclipse, according to Google Trends.</li><li>Many of those searches came from states in or near the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/solar-eclipse-map-nasa-where-when-see-path-of-totality-2024-3">eclipse's path of totality</a>.</li></ul><p>Large swathes of the US took time out of their day to view Monday's solar eclipse, which brought out awestruck <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/solar-eclipse-photos-totality-us-2024-4#at-niagara-falls-which-was-in-the-path-of-totality-the-sky-filled-with-blue-and-orange-colors-reminiscent-of-a-sunset-11">crowds from Texas to Maine</a>.</p><p>And apparently, a good amount of people feared they might have damaged their eyesight in the process.</p><p>Google searches for "eyes hurt" spiked around the time of the eclipse, suggesting that viewers of the eclipse were worried their discomfort might mean something more serious.</p><div type="image" title="Spike in Google searches. of &quot;eyes hurt&quot; during 2023 solar eclipse" height="560" width="2266" msid="109173353" hostid="261" sizebytes="18826"></div><p>Searches peaked at 3:12 p.m. ET — about 45 mins after the path of the eclipse crossed into Texas from Mexico — and had largely returned to normal levels by 5 p.m on Monday.</p><p>Most of those searches were concentrated in states in or near the path of <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/solar-eclipse-diagram-2017-8">totality</a> — where the moon fully blocked out the sun — which <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/solar-eclipse-map-nasa-where-when-see-path-of-totality-2024-3">cut through some of the most populated regions</a> in the Midwestern and Northeastern US. Over 30 million people from those regions were able to witness the extraordinary event.</p><p>Vermont, a state nearly bisected by the path of totality, reported the most searches from people presumably concerned about their retinas. Most of those searches were in the northern Burlington metropolitan area, according to Google Trends.</p> <p>The Green Mountain State was followed by West Virginia, which, though not within the immediate path of totality, had 90 search hits for every 100 in Vermont. New Hampshire, Michigan, and Ohio — which did manage to see the full eclipse — were all close behind.</p><p>The <a target="_blank" href="https://trends.google.com/trends/explore?date=2024-04-07T05%202024-04-09T13&amp;geo=US&amp;q=eyes%20hurt&amp;hl=en">metro area</a> most concerned with its own eyesight was Presque Isle, Maine, at the far northeastern tip of the country, followed by Plattsburgh, West Virginia, and Alpena, Michigan.</p><p>Solar eclipses <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/is-the-solar-eclipse-dangerous-2024-4">can cause serious vision problems</a> if viewed without the proper safety measures.</p><p>However, according to the American Academy of Ophthalmology, pain or discomfort immediately after viewing the eclipse is not necessarily indicative of serious eye damage.</p><p>"If your eyes feel a little funny after an eclipse, it may not be a sign of solar retinopathy. Damage from the eclipse is unlikely to cause pain or discomfort in your eyes because the retina does not have any pain nerves," the group <a target="_blank" href="https://www.aao.org/eye-health/tips-prevention/think-you-hurt-your-eyes-watching-eclipse">says</a>.</p><p>Serious damage, eye doctors say, would likely manifest in visual symptoms — like blind spots or blurry vision — within four to six hours of the event.</p><p>Chances are, if you took enough precautions — such as wearing ISO-certified solar viewing glasses or <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-to-watch-solar-eclipse-safely-without-glasses-2024-4">an appropriate alternative</a> — your eyesight is probably fine. But it can't hurt to get your eyes checked if you're experiencing prolonged discomfort.</p>

There was a huge spike in people Googling that their 'eyes hurt' during the eclipse

New Delhi [India], November 8 (ANI): Today is the day when the world will witness the last total <keyword id="90051" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="lunar-eclipse" source="Orion">lunar eclipse</keyword> of this year. <br /><br /> At full moon, when the moon is close to a node, total lunar eclipses take place because the earth blocks the sun's rays from reaching the moon.<br /><br /> Almost a year after the last total lunar eclipse, the sight of the moon sliding into the shadows of the Earth returns and graces the sky.<br /><br /> Viewers in North America, Central America, most of South America, the Pacific Ocean, Australia, New Zealand, and Asia will see the Moon darken and acquire a reddish in the wee hours of Tuesday, November 8.<br /><br /> When and how to watch lunar eclipse<br /><br /> The Moon traverses the northern half of Earth's shadow, with totality predicted to last 86 minutes. Mid-eclipse happens on November 8th at 10:59 Universal Time (UT), around six days before apogee, when the Moon is farthest from Earth in its orbit. As a result, during the eclipse, the Moon will appear 7 per cent smaller than it does when it's at perigee (closest to Earth), but the difference is imperceptible. The eclipse on Tuesday will be a bit brighter than the one that occurred in May -- especially in the Moon's northern half -- since the Moon doesn't glide as close to the dark center of Earth's shadow.<br /><br /> There are several delightful extras viewers can look out for while admiring the eclipse. During totality, Earth's shadow dims the Moon sufficiently for stars to be visible right up to its edge. In addition, Uranus reaches opposition just a day after the eclipse, when it's directly opposite the Earth from the Sun and at its closest and brightest. And on eclipse night the distant planet will be upper left of the red-hued Moon -- binoculars will reveal the planet's pale disk. The farther west you are, the smaller the gap between planet and Moon. Also, the Northern and Southern Taurid meteor showers peak around this time, so eclipse-watchers might be treated to a few meteors streaking across the night sky.<br /><br /> All stages of the eclipse occur simultaneously for everyone, but not everyone will see the full eclipse. Weather permitting, observers in western North America will witness the entirety of the event on the morning of November 8, with the partial eclipse phase beginning an hour or so after midnight. In Hawai'i, the totally eclipsed Moon will be directly overhead. You probably won't notice anything until the Moon is about halfway across the penumbra.<br /><br /> 1. Watch for a slight darkening on the Moon's left side as seen from North America. The penumbral shading becomes stronger as the Moon moves deeper in.<br /><br /> 2. The penumbra is the region where an astronaut standing on the Moon would see Earth covering only part of the Sun's face.<br /><br /> 3. The Moon's leading edge enters the umbra, the cone of Earth's shadow within which the Sun's completely hidden. You should notice a dramatic darkening on the leading edge of the lunar disk. With a telescope, you can watch the edge of the umbra slowly engulfing one lunar feature after another, as the entire sky begins to grow darker.<br /><br /> 4. The trailing edge of the Moon slips into the umbra for the beginning of total eclipse. But the Moon won't black out completely: It's sure to glow some shade of intense orange or red.<br /><br /> 5. Why is this? The Earth's atmosphere scatters and bends (refracts) sunlight that skims its edges, diverting some of it onto the eclipsed Moon. If you were on the Moon during a lunar eclipse, you'd see the Sun hidden by a dark Earth rimmed with the reddish light of all the sunrises and sunsets ringing the world at that moment.<br /><br /> 6. The red umbral glow can be quite different from one eclipse to the next. Two main factors affect its brightness and hue. Europeans dubbed this the rose moon, and other cultures called it the hot moon because it harkens summer heat ahead.</p><p>"Mead" or "honey moon" are other European names <a href="https://solarsystem.nasa.gov/news/2364/the-next-full-moon-is-the-strawberry-moon-mead-or-honey-moon-and-a-full-moon-weekend/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">for this</a> full moon. Some people also think the moon appears more reddish in color this month because of the heat.</p><p><strong>The next sturgeon moon: </strong>August 19, 2024</p><h2>Some full moons are called supermoons or micromoons. The contemporary terms refer to how large and small the moon looks at various points in its elliptical orbit.</h2><div type="image" title="A supermoon above a cityscape" height="2287" width="3049" msid="103970913" hostid="261"></div><p>Supermoons occur when the moon is at perigee — the closest point to Earth. They can cause stronger ocean tides and weather events.</p><p>Micromoons are the opposite, occurring at apogee — when the moon is furthest from Earth. They can reduce the variation in spring tides by <a href="https://www.timeanddate.com/astronomy/moon/micro-moon.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">2 inches</a>. Micromoons appear about 14% smaller than supermoons, and sometimes seem dimmer, since the area illuminated by the sun appears 30% smaller, according to <a href="https://www.timeanddate.com/astronomy/moon/micro-moon.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">TimeandDate.com</a>.</p><p>Since the International Astronomical Union has not officially defined supermoons or micromoons, astronomers disagree on which full moons get the designation.</p><p><strong>The next full supermoon:</strong> August 19, 2024</p><p><strong>The next full micromoon:</strong> February 24, 2024</p><h2>Blue moons are like special bonuses. That happens because the lunar month is only 29 days long, while the Gregorian calendar month is usually 30 or 31 days long.</p><p>The moon doesn't actually appear blue on these occasions. <ul class="summary-list"><li>Jon Carmichael captured what is considered one of the most stunning photos of a <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/why-2024-total-solar-eclipse-cool-best-special-nasa-2024-1">solar eclipse</a>.</li><li>But getting the  shot of his dreams was no cakewalk. </li></ul><p><em>This as-told-to essay is based on a conversation with astrophotographer</em><a target="_blank" href="https://joncarmichael.com/108"><em> Jon Carmichael</em></a><em>. It has been edited for length and clarity.</em></p><p>I have been dreaming of a <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/tips-how-to-take-pictures-photos-solar-eclipse-2024-2">specific eclipse photo</a> since I was 12 years old: I wondered if I could get high enough in the sky to see the shadow of the moon moving over the Earth.</p><p>I finally got my chance during the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/solar-eclipse-maps-time-weather-traffic-brightness-2017-8">2017 Great American Eclipse</a>, but capturing that perfect shot from my dreams was not easy.</p><p>About a year before the eclipse Alaska Airlines announced it had an entire plane flying into the eclipse with just one seat left and it was holding a competition for that seat. It felt like fate.</p><p>I poured my heart and soul into a 30-second video explaining why I should get the seat. All my eggs were in that basket. But when it announced the winner less than a week before the eclipse, I'd lost.</p><p>I can't describe how devastated I was.</p><p>At that point, it was a race against time. At first, I gave into my disappointment and laid in my bed. Then I started looking at commercial flight paths, which involved a <em>lot</em> of math.</p><p>As I looked at flight paths, I realized that a <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/southwest-airlines-plane-detour-drop-off-flight-attendant-deadheading-2023-8">Southwest flight</a> from Portland, Oregon to St. Louis, Missouri would travel basically along the eclipse path. I had to be on that plane. But, I'm based in New York, so I needed to buy a last-minute cross-country flight to Portland.</p><p>When I got there, that Alaska Airlines flight I had dreamed of was departing from the next gate. It felt like the universe was torturing me.</p><p>Still, I was determined. When I arrived, I was <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/photo-international-space-station-hidden-passing-sun-2023-4">equipped with three cameras</a> and a surplus of cash in case I needed to bribe someone for a window seat.</p><p>Then Southwest announced it was delaying the flight. My heart sank. I was going to miss the brief window to witness the eclipse, I thought. But then the flight crew clarified that they were deliberately delaying the flight so it would be inside the moon's shadow.</p><p>I nearly died of relief, then decided to push my luck. I took out all my cameras and made sure the NASA t-shirt I was wearing was clear. I told the crew my whole saga. Lucky for me, the flight crew and pilot <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/best-photo-eclipse-2018-9#the-pilots-actually-circled-the-eclipse-a-few-times-so-passengers-could-witness-the-once-in-a-lifetime-event-thats-when-carmichael-captured-his-stunning-photo-2">took my mission to heart</a>.</p><p>I was the first one on the plane, and the ground crew even cleaned my window. The pilot did circles at 39,000 feet and adjusted the angle of the plane so I could get the best possible shot.</p><p>To be clear, this was not a private jet. This was a Southwest commercial plane rerouting its flight for my shot — I can't believe I was so lucky.</p><p>After we landed, the real work began. I spent hundreds of hours over the course of a year <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/draggan-ai-tool-altering-photos-like-photoshop-steroids-research-paper-2023-5">editing the more than 1,200 photos</a> I'd taken.</p><p>The <a target="_blank" href="https://joncarmichael.com/108">result</a> has been hailed as one of the most outstanding eclipse photos in history, showing not only the eclipsed sun, but also the shadow of the moon sweeping over the Snake River, the border between Idaho and Oregon.</p><p>Getting that shot really was a childhood dream come true. If I try to reproduce a similar image, again, I'm worried <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/what-happens-people-struck-by-lightning-chances-2018-5">lightning won't strike</a> twice.</p><p>So instead of trying to force it, I'm going to savor the experience this year.</p><p>After all, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-where-when-see-solar-eclipse-united-states-nasa-map-2023-3">total solar eclipses</a> are a miracle. They only happen because Earth is just the right distance from the sun and moon, so I really want to appreciate that magic during the 2024 total eclipse.</p><h2>What I'm doing differently this year</h2><div type="image" title="Total solar eclipse in the upper right of the photo with the moon's shadow cast down on the mountainous land below." height="1250" width="2000" msid="108530985" hostid="261" sizebytes="84742"></div><p>At first, I considered just enjoying this eclipse in nature with my family. I'm based in New York, relatively close to the path of totality, so it would have been easy.</p><p>But then, Southwest Airlines contacted me about a partnership, and I couldn't say no.</p><p>So now, I'll be on <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/delta-air-lines-solar-eclipse-flight-april-2024-2">another flight, high above clouds</a> and unpredictable weather, hoping to catch another spectacular image.</p><p>The difference is, this time instead of being alone I'll be with the people I love: my mom, sister, brother-in-law, and nieces, Alayna and Madelyn.</p><p>We'll be traveling on a flight from Dallas to Pittsburg, which should give us plenty of opportunity to photograph the eclipse with different landscapes.</p><p>I'm keeping my specific ideas to myself, but I will say that the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/mississippi-river-dangerously-low-second-year-in-row-army-dredging-2023-9">Mississippi River</a> is an iconic feature of the US that I'd love to highlight.</p><h2>I'm planning ahead, and you should too</h2><p>Even though I'll be on a flight, getting a great photo of the eclipse takes a lot of planning ahead even if you're an amateur shooting with your smartphone.</p><p>The angle of this eclipse means it will be higher in the sky than the 2017 event, making it more difficult to get the sun and the landscape into the same shot.</p><p>I've been spending a lot of time using tools like this Navy <a target="_blank" href="https://aa.usno.navy.mil/data/Eclipse2024#forma">calculator</a> that lets you see the height of the eclipse at different longitudes and latitudes.</p><p>Knowing what the eclipse will look like in various places will help me get the best shot — I hope.</p><p>Regardless of whether I get a great photo this time, or not, being with my loved ones is what really matters to me this time around.</p><p>Flying through an eclipse with Alayna and Madelyn, who are the same age I was when I first became fascinated with the skies, will truly be a full-circle moment.</p>

How I took the 'best' photo of the 2017 American solar eclipse — and what I'm doing differently this year

<ul class="summary-list"><li>A <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-to-see-lunar-eclipse-november-longest-in-century-2021-11">lunar eclipse</a> casts the light of all Earth's sunrises and sunsets onto the moon Tuesday morning.</li><li>That <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/wildfire-smoke-could-turn-full-buck-moon-blood-red-2021-7">paints the full moon red</a>, raising a blood moon into the skies on Election Day morning.</li></ul><p>A blood-red full moon is set to rise in the sky on the morning of Election Day, November 8, across the US.</p><p>As voters cast their ballots for the general election, Earth's shadow will cast a red glow across the full moon. It's a total lunar eclipse, often called a "blood moon," and there won't be another one until 2025.</p><div type="image" title="voter at polling station booth" height="1500" width="2000" msid="95309676" hostid="261" sizebytes="65098"></div><p>The red color comes from the light of all the sunrises and sunsets happening across the planet. That's because Earth's shadow comes with a ring — the atmosphere, right along the day-night split. Sunlight passes through that atmosphere, which bends it toward the moon. The red portion of the light spectrum is what makes it through to the other side.</p><p>"It's as if all the world's sunrises and sunsets are projected onto the moon," NASA wrote in a <a href="https://moon.nasa.gov/news/185/what-you-need-to-know-about-the-lunar-eclipse/#:~:text=The%20last%20total%20lunar%20eclipse,Moon%20passes%20into%20Earth's%20shadow.">blog post</a> explaining the phenomenon.</p><div type="image" title="graphic shows how earth atmosphere scatters different colors of light" height="555" width="987" msid="95309677" hostid="261" sizebytes="17894"></div><p>"The more dust or clouds in Earth's atmosphere during the eclipse, the redder the moon will appear," NASA said.</p><p>The blood moon will be visible in the early morning hours across all of North and Central America, according to <a href="https://moon.nasa.gov/news/185/what-you-need-to-know-about-the-lunar-eclipse/#:~:text=The%20last%20total%20lunar%20eclipse,Moon%20passes%20into%20Earth's%20shadow.">NASA</a>. People in Asia and Australia can catch the lunar bloodbath in the early evening.</p><p>The total eclipse — the red blood moon — begins at 5:16 a.m. ET and lasts until the moon sets at 6:41 a.m. ET.</p><div type="image" title="gif shows total lunar eclipse shadow falling over moon then turning red" height="338" width="600" msid="95309678" hostid="261" sizebytes="7560"></div><p>"The parts of the moon outside the umbra [shadow] during the partial phases are almost as bright as an ordinary full moon, making the obstructed parts appear nearly black. Then wait until March 14, 2025, for the next total lunar eclipse.</p>

A lunar eclipse will bring a blood red moon on Election Day — the last one for 3 years

<ul class="summary-list"><li><keyword id="6403864" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="june">June</keyword>'s <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/best-photos-earth-moon-from-deep-space-2017-3">full moon</a> is referred to as the "<keyword id="3429300" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="strawberry-moon">strawberry moon</keyword>" because it comes during strawberry season.</li><li>On Friday, people in many parts of the world can see a partial penumbral <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/photos-of-total-solar-eclipse-chile-argentina-2019-7">eclipse</a> — when the <keyword id="42440" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Moon">moon</keyword> passes through Earth's outer shadow.</li><li>The <keyword id="45623" type="ENTERTAINMENT" weightage="60" keywordseo="eclipse">eclipse</keyword> will be visible in Asia, Australia, Europe, and Africa, but you can also watch it <a href="https://www.virtualtelescope.eu/2020/05/09/5-june-2020-penumbral-lunar-eclipse-online-observation/">online</a>.</li></ul><p>June's <keyword id="89794" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Full-Moon">full moon</keyword> — also known as the "strawberry moon" because it comes during strawberry season — might look a little darker than normal on Friday. </p><p>That's because many parts of the world will be able to see a celestial event known as a partial penumbral eclipse, when part of the moon moves through the Earth's outer shadow. This makes a chunk of the moon appear dimmer.</p><p>The strawberry-moon eclipse will be visible above Asia, Australia, Europe, and Africa. People in the US won't see it but can watch the event via livestream. </p><p>The moon will be at its fullest on Friday at 3:12 p.m. ET, and the <a href="https://www.virtualtelescope.eu/2020/05/09/5-june-2020-penumbral-lunar-eclipse-online-observation/">Virtual Telescope Project is set to livestream the eclipse from Italy</a> starting at 3 p.m. ET, as the moon dims above Rome's skyline. </p><p>You can watch below. </p><p>The moon will appear full for about three days, from early Thursday morning into early Sunday morning.</p><p>While the partial penumbral eclipse won't have any major influence on Earth, it can affect some spacecraft.</p><p>"For spacecraft at the moon such as the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter, the reduction in solar power is noticeable," <a href="https://solarsystem.nasa.gov/news/1257/the-next-full-moon-is-the-strawberry-moon/">NASA </a>wrote in a <a href="https://solarsystem.nasa.gov/news/1257/the-next-full-moon-is-the-strawberry-moon/">release</a> about the strawberry moon.</p><p><div type="image" title="Strawberry Moon" height="1486" width="1981" msid="76225188" hostid="261"></div></p><h2>The strawberry moon is also known as the 'mead moon' or 'honey moon'</h2><p>June's full moon will be the last of the spring. </p><p>The strawberry moniker comes from the Algonquin tribes. An old European name for this final spring full moon, meanwhile, is the "mead moon" or the "honey moon," since people considered honey to be the sweetest during June. (Mead is an alcoholic drink made from fermented honey.)</p><p>During the Middle Ages, many couples in Europe also got married in June (as plenty still do today), so that might be where the tradition of calling the first month of marriage the "honeymoon" comes from.</p>

A 'strawberry-moon' lunar eclipse will occur Friday night — here's how to see it

<ul class="summary-list"><li><a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/coronal-hole-on-sun-blasts-solar-wind-toward-earth-2023-3">The sun</a> has a big year in 2024, starting with a total solar eclipse across the US.</li><li>As the sun builds to maximum activity, watch out for <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/northern-lights-sky-friday-us-solar-winds-giant-hole-sun-2023-3">the northern lights</a> too.</li></ul><p>The sun was showing off all last year, with dramatic eruptions, sunspots, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/second-giant-coronal-hole-sun-solar-winds-space-weather-aurora-2023-3">giant "holes,"</a> and even a <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/nasa-video-solar-tornado-plasma-2023-3">14-earths-high tornado of plasma</a>. But 2024 may be our star's biggest year yet.</p><p>That's what giddy <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/sun-polar-vortex-video-from-solar-plasma-break-2023-2">NASA</a> scientists told reporters at the fall meeting of the American Geophysical Union in San Francisco in December. In true NASA fashion, they're calling it the "heliophysics big year."</p><div type="image" title="solar flare" height="627" width="1089" msid="107672113" hostid="261" sizebytes="43108"></div><p>One of the main events this year will be a <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/why-2024-total-solar-eclipse-cool-best-special-nasa-2024-1">historically cool total solar eclipse crossing the US in April</a>. It's estimated up to 7.4 million people will travel to the path of totality to witness the rare event.</p><p>Another exciting event involves NASA's prime solar probe, which is set to skim <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/sunspots-15-times-size-of-earth-solar-storm-into-view-2023-11">the sun's surface</a> in December, flying closer than any previous spacecraft.</p><div type="image" title="total solar eclipse 2019" height="1290" width="1960" msid="107188970" hostid="261"></div><p>Meanwhile, the Northern and Southern Lights are sure to have an impressive year, as well.</p><p>Already, we've seen beautiful aurora reach as far south as Arizona within the last year. And as<strong> </strong><a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/sun-more-active-solar-storms-auroras-power-outages-grounded-flights-2023-2">stormy activity on the sun,</a> which helps spark aurora worldwide, is set to increase, we could continue to see the Northern Lights illuminate skies across the US at unusually low latitudes.</p><p>For viewers in Australia, New Zealand, and South America, the Southern Lights (aurora australis) will surely make spectacular displays too.</p><div type="image" title="ribbons of green pink purple northern lights stretch across the night sky above homes and lights of a sprawling town" height="1500" width="2250" msid="107188973" hostid="261"></div><p>It will be about 11 years — a full <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/next-solar-maximum-2025-what-expect-cycle-2023-4">solar cycle</a> — before the aurora is so active again.</p><p>"<a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/solar-maximum-could-sooner-than-expected-2023-6">The sun</a> touches everything, and we are challenging you to experience the sun in as many ways as possible," Kelly Korreck, NASA's program manager for the upcoming eclipse, said during the AGU roundtable.</p><h2>The sun's big year kicks off with a total eclipse</h2><div type="image" title="A cheerleader smiles as she looks up at the sky holding eclipse glasses." height="1333" width="2000" msid="107672115" hostid="261" sizebytes="202708"></div><p>While the rest of us put on our <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-where-when-see-solar-eclipse-united-states-nasa-map-2023-3">eclipse glasses</a> or look out for the pink and green ribbons of the aurora, astronomers will be busy at work. This year's solar events are a huge scientific opportunity.</p><p>For example, NASA is launching three rockets during the April total solar eclipse, loaded with instruments to study how the sudden darkness changes our upper atmosphere.</p><p>A total solar eclipse offers scientists a unique opportunity to observe the corona — the outer layer of the sun's atmosphere. The corona is over 100 times hotter than the sun's surface, but scientists can't explain why and it's one of the biggest mysteries in our solar system. Because the moon blocks the main disc of the sun during an eclipse, only the corona is visible.</p><p>NASA's Parker Solar Probe and the European Space Agency's Solar Orbiter will also be watching the eclipse from two different vantage points in space, as they orbit close to the sun. That extra data can help scientists get 3D observations of the corona, as well as validate measurements from Earth-based observatories.</p><p>That's just one fleeting moment of the sun's big year. Throughout 2024, as solar activity builds, countless observatories and physicists will be watching closely.</p><h2>The sun will get more and more active</h2><div type="image" title="X-class solar flare erupting off the sun." height="747" width="800" msid="107188979" hostid="261"></div><p>When <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/solar-flare-from-sunspot-caused-widespread-radio-blackouts-earth-2023-5">the sun belches</a> plasma and charged particles into space, they can speed toward Earth, travel down our planet's magnetic field lines toward the poles, and interact with molecules in our atmosphere to make the aurora. They can also bump satellites out of orbit and surge through technologies on the ground, triggering radio blackouts and meddling with GPS.</p><div type="image" title="solar flare red orange plasma erupting from the sun's surface" height="1500" width="1500" msid="107672116" hostid="261" sizebytes="153010"></div><p>There's always a steady flow of this "<a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/nasa-discovered-solar-wind-disappear-around-mars-2023-12">solar wind</a>," but eruptions on the sun can send a powerful flood of solar wind careening toward our planet. That's what scientists call space weather. These storms are happening more and more as the sun climbs toward peak activity.</p><div type="image" title="Solar Wind" height="360" width="640" msid="107188982" hostid="261"></div><p>People on Earth are safe from these blasts of solar activity, with the exception of rare cases where they might cause power or <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/titanic-theory-suggests-aurora-borealis-solar-storm-affected-crash-2020-9">radio blackouts</a>. But as NASA and other space agencies send humans back to the moon and on to Mars, space weather will become a safety issue for them.</p><p>Studying solar eruptions and flares can help scientists forecast space weather better in the future. That could be crucial for long-distance spaceflights.</p><p>"If we want to win the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/china-up-the-ante-space-race-sky-ladder-to-mars-2021-6">race to Mars</a> then we have to have awareness of space weather all over the place," Nour Raouafi, a lead scientist for the Parker Solar Probe, said at the roundtable.</p><h2>NASA to almost land on the sun at the end of the year</h2><div type="image" title="nasa parker solar probe plus sun mission illustration" height="1687" width="3000" msid="107188983" hostid="261"></div><p>The "crown jewel" of the sun's big year comes on December 24, though, Raouafi said. That's when the Parker Solar Probe will fly closer to the sun than any spacecraft has ever gone, about 3.8 million miles from its surface.</p><p>For comparison, Earth is 93 million miles from the sun.</p><p>On this close flyby, the probe will face unfathomably extreme heat and radiation, with temperatures as high as 2,600 degrees Fahrenheit.</p><p>Collecting data so close to the source of the solar wind will help scientists understand how it forms. It will also fuel the study of the corona.</p><p>"This is a monumental achievement for all of humanity. This is equivalent to the moon landing of '69. Now we are basically almost landing on a star," Raouafi said.</p>
