<ul><li><keyword id="366712" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="tarun-katial" source="Orion">Tarun Katial</keyword> is currently working on the first-of-its-kind women-only social media platform Eve World.</li><li>There is an additional layer of blockchain technology added to the platform, which will allow the users to get rewarded for each action.</li><li>The platform will be launched in India, Middle East and Indonesia first, and then in other countries.</li></ul>Indian media executive and business professional Tarun Katial — who has previously led <keyword id="6245082" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="zee5" source="Orion">Zee5</keyword> and <keyword id="82551" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="big-fm" source="Orion">Big FM</keyword> as founder chief executive — is now on a journey to make social media safer for women with his latest offering Eve World.<br /><br />Katial has been working on the concept of Eve World, with Aparna Acharekar and Rajneel Kumar, since 2020 after he had an up-close experience of the harassment women face on the internet and traditional social media networks.<br /><br />“My wife [media veteran Monisha Singh Katial] is a really accomplished media person and she started getting trolled on WhatsApp, somebody got her number from somewhere. Me and another friend of mine recommended that we should go to the police station. Now the reason she gave me was that ‘even if I report, what real action would be taken even if they find the person?” he added.<br /><br />Forty six-year-old Tarun Katial has been in the media and entertainment industry for over two decades. He has retained top executive positions in brands like <keyword id="17943" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="star-india" source="Orion">Star India</keyword>, Sony Entertainment and Reliance Broadcast Network.<br /><br />Eve World became a reality in June 2021 as a first-of-its-kind women-only platform that aims to empower women to express their opinion, create content and form communities without worrying about the consequences.<br /><br />According to the National Commission for Women (NCW) chairperson Rekha Sharma, cases of online harassment grew nearly five fold in 2020. “While earlier, we would record 300 complaints of online harassment, this shot up to 1,500 post the COVID-19 pandmeic,” she<a href="https://indianexpress.com/article/cities/ahmedabad/after-covid-cases-of-online-harassment-spiked-by-5-times-7137386/"> said</a> in January 2021.<br /><br />In the USA, four in ten women admitted to have faced online harassment, according to a <a href="https://www.pewresearch.org/internet/2021/01/13/the-state-of-online-harassment/">report </a>published by Pew Research Center in January this year. <br /><br />However, it does raise questions whether creating a separate space for women would further isolate them from the general public. Commenting on the same, Katial highlighted that this is why they went with the tagline “We can’t change the world for you, but we can create a better one for you.”<br /><br />Pritam Baruah, Dean of School of Law at BML Munjal University, told Business Insider, “In the larger context, however, isolation will not be the lens through which they will be viewed. There is the freedom to form exclusive groups in the marketplace of platforms and each will serve its purpose and constituency."<br /><br /><strong>Eve World is trying to build more than just social media<br /></strong><br />Eve World will use this capital to launch the platform in the January-March quarter of 2022. The company aims to launch worldwide, including countries like the US and UK, where female participation in the digital arena is higher. But it will start off with countries like India, Middle East and Indonesia, where the population is larger and the company believes that it can add some value by giving women their space.<br /><br />On the face of it, Eve World has been built on a creator partnership, something like Facebook, Instagram and Twitter, where the people on the platform are running the show. But there is an additional layer of blockchain technology added to the platform, which will allow Eve World’s users to get rewarded for each action on the platform. <br /><br />The reward can either be virtual tokens or points and can be used for a range of use cases — including consulting doctors and mental health professionals on the platform, shopping or even to buy non-fungible tokens (NFTs) at a discount on the platform. It will generate revenue by charging micro-entrepreneurs to promote their businesses.<br /><br />Eve World will set up a two-way authentication to ensure only women are using the platform. Katial claimed that 70% of its workforce at Eve World are going to be women as they understand these issues much better.<br /><br />The company has already raised capital from Singapore-based Jungle Ventures, one of the largest independent early and growth stage venture capital firms in Southeast Asia. An Indian media veteran is building a social media platform just for women after his wife got trolled on Whatsapp

<ul><li>Customer engagement platform <keyword id="2970390" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="MoEngage">MoEngage</keyword> is planning to go big on international expansion in the one year.</li><li>MoEngage recently closed a $32 million funding round led by Multiples Alternate Asset Management.</li><li>A part of the funding will be used to set up an R&amp;D center in Hyderabad due to the talent pool crunch in Bengaluru.</li></ul>MoEngage, which helps companies like Domino's engage with their customers, is planning to go big on international expansion in the one year.<br /><br />It has already set up local offices in the UK, Germany and Vietnam over the last one year, and cities like New York and Boston are next in line. <br /><br />The company aims to touch annual recurring revenue (ARR) of $100 million in the next three years, by 2024. Though MoEngage did not share their current ARR, the company claimed that it is higher than $20 million. This would mean that the company is looking to expand five fold in the next three years.<br /><br />The company has also decided to set up another research and development (R&amp;D) center in Hyderabad, MoEngage’s chief executive officer (CEO) Raviteja Dodda said in an exclusive interaction with Business Insider. Currently, it has one R&amp;D center in Bengaluru. <br /><br />These R&amp;D centers are like the backend of any software-as-a-service (SaaS) company, where the products are actually developed and designed. <br /><br />Several SaaS companies even if they cater to customers in the western market, set up R&amp;D centers in India due to the massive talent pool and cheap workforce. Some prominent examples are Freshworks, Zoho Corp and Browserstack. <br /><br />“New office in Hyderabad is to expand the talent pool. Hiring is a big problem right now, across every company. And if you are based in Bengaluru, it's even a bigger problem to hire people. markets<br /></strong><br />MindTickle was founded by Krishna Depura, Mohit Garg, Deepak Diwakar and Nishant Mungali in 2011. It helps companies build sales capabilities. It also offers solutions for onboarding, micro-learning and skills development.<br /><br />MindTickle plans to use this funding to expand its presence in multiple verticals as well as markets like Europe and Asia. A part of the funding would also be used to acquire more companies and expand their technology stack, MindTickle’s chief executive officer (CEO) and cofounder Depura told Business Insider. <br /><br />“So a reasonable chunk of [the] money will go into global expansions, getting into more territories and geographies. The second amount [sic] will go into R&amp;D [research and development], which we’ll use to develop our stack. I think $100 million is a lot of money and it’s not like we’ll deploy the money in the next six months or one year. But it’ll give us sufficient power to plan for the next three-four years to set up our base and continue to think over the horizon,” Depura added.<br /><br />He also highlighted that the company has a good presence in India at the moment, especially in the automotive and pharmaceutical sectors.  <br /><br />MindTickle will also use a part of the funding to go aggressive on hiring across geographies and functions. It has already hired over 100 employees in 2021 and has openings for 115 positions. The company has a workforce of 500 employees. <br /><br /><strong>MindTickle’s current clientele has already set its global presence</strong><br /><br />This is SoftBank’s second investment in the Pune and San Francisco-based startup. The Japanese conglomerate had previously led MindTickle’s $100 million round raised in November 2020. Existing investors Norwest Venture Partners, Accel Partners, Canaan, NEA, NewView Capital, and Qualcomm Ventures had also participated in the round.<br /><br />The SaaS startup has raised over $281 million to date.<br /><br />Its clientele includes 200 enterprise companies like Johnson &amp; Johnson, Splunk, Wipro, Ola, Cloudera, Dabur and United Colors of Benetton. Its customer base includes a few dozen Fortune 500 and Forbes Global 2000 companies, which is an annual ranking of the top corporations worldwide measured by revenue. <br /><br />MindTickle claims to have presence in over 115 countries as its clientele has subsidiaries across the world.<br /><br />“We continue to be impressed by Mindtickle’s performance in creating and becoming a category leader in the sales readiness space. MindTickle is the third SaaS firm from India to enter the unicorn club in 2021

<ul><li>The Indian SaaS segment has the potential to clock a total turnover of $75 billion by 2025.</li><li>One in five global <keyword id="6361043" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="software" source="Orion">software</keyword> demand is likely to be met by Indian <keyword id="6756963" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="saas-companies" source="Orion">SaaS companies</keyword> in the next four years, according to experts.</li><li>On one hand large global corporations, even tech giants like Amazon and Twitter, are buying software solutions from India.</li><li>This has led to a mad rush from venture capitalists who have pumped in $1.7 billion into these startups in 2020.</li><li>Seven unicorns have been created in this space in the last year and a half alone.</li></ul>The sudden change in global trends and the rise of ‘remote everything’ — from learning to work — has propelled the software-as-a-service (SaaS) industry.<br /><br />And their customers include marquee names like Amazon, Twitter, <keyword id="596" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="hyundai" source="Orion">Hyundai</keyword>, Domino’s, and Philips, just to name a few. Venture capital firms like Accel, Tiger Global and Sequoia, looking for the next gold rush, have pumped in $1.7 billion across 128 deals in 2020, and more in 2021, creating at least seven unicorns in the space of less than 20 months, in India alone. <br /><br />Enterprise tech accounted for 13% of deal volume among top investors in the first half of 2021, says a NASSCOM PGA Labs report.<br /><br />According to a report by investment firm Chiratae Ventures and consulting firm Zinnov last month, the Indian SaaS segment has the potential to clock a total turnover of <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/business/startups/news/india-software-service-sector-needs-more-than-200000-employees-by-2025/articleshow/84632003.cms">$75 billion</a> by 2025.<br /><br /><strong>But where will this revenue come from?</strong> <br /><br />The answer is simple — market and product expansion. As the world stepped into a lockdown in March 2020, the SaaS companies had a new reality to face — the demand for softwares and solutions that required limited/no physical efforts and showed faster results was the need of the hour. <br /><br />More enterprises were on a hunt for tech solutions in the latest virtual scene and SaaS companies started seeing more customer interest. Zoho, which is a 25-year old bootstrapped company that has not raised funds so far, has customers like Amazon, Zomato and Xiaomi.<br /><br />Here's Sridhar Vembu, the founder of Zoho, explaining the software boom, in a recent interview with Business Insider.<br />                                        <div type="Video" msid="85650341" hostid="261" title="Zoho founder explains India's software boom in the last 24 months" dataSource="BUSINESSINSIDER" thumbUrl="https://denmark.timesinternet.in/cmslite/api/app/images.jpg?msid=85650341"></div><br />Conversational artificial intelligence (AI) solutions company Uniphore ⁠— backed by Cisco, Sistema Capital Partners and ⁠Chiratae Ventures — claims to have noted a 3-fold year-on-year increase in their revenue in the financial year 2021, meanwhile contract management system has termed this fiscal the best one for them.<br /><br />Similar trend of increased revenue has been witnessed by most of the big SaaS names in India.<br /><br />Backed by Google and led by founder Girish Mathrubootham, help desk software company Freshworks ⁠— which has bagged contracts from Vice Media Group, Toshiba and Cisco ⁠— claimed to have crossed $300 million in annual recurring revenue (ARR) in February 2021. ARR is a metric used by SaaS businesses to show the revenue one can expect on a yearly basis. <br /><br />“It’s no secret that the future of business and scale is SaaS-driven, more so in the post-pandemic landscape. What’s interesting however is how quickly Indian companies have set a global benchmark for the industry. The exponential growth unlocked in the last 5 years is a testament to how capital efficient the Indian SaaS industry is,” Venkatesh Peddi, executive director and head of SaaS investments at Chiratae Ventures, previously said.<br /><br />One in five global software demands will be met by Indian SaaS companies in the next four years, Chiratae-Zinnov report added.<br /><em><br /></em><strong>What are Indian startups doing to attract these customers?</strong><br /><br />With enough revenue and funding to aid sustain and grow their businesses, Indian SaaS companies have now put in greater focus on penetrating deeper into the international markets. <br /><br />                    <div type="image" title="Amazon, Twitter, Hyundai, and Domino’s are buying Indian software fuelling a $75 billion dream chased by top VCs like Sequoia and Tiger Global" msid="85647440" hostid="261"></div><br />Monish Darda, co-founder and chief technical officer (CTO) of Icertis, talked to Business Insider about the three important aspects for international expansion for any SaaS business. First, ensuring that the technology is in accordance with the market one if planning to enter. Second, readiness from the team perspective and having local workforce who understand the market well. Third, cracking right partnerships to expand business.<br /><br />“If you look at contract management, you will see that for India we will not only integrate electronic signatures from Adobe Sign, which are global, but also add e-Mudhra which is a very Indian specific digital signature. You always have these different things in different markets that you need to cater to, to be successful. So there is technology,” he explained.<br /><br />Ankur Bansal, co-founder of BlackSoil Capital, in an interaction with Business Insider said that it’s almost a given for all SaaS companies, who have found their product-market fit, to think global. A television he shipped during his move arrived broken, and he wasn't having any luck getting through to customer service to get reimbursed for his troubles.</p><p>As these stories go, Mathrubootham knew there had to be a better way to get customers in touch with the companies that serve them. So he co-founded Freshworks - then known as Freshdesk - to do just that.</p><p>"When we started Freshworks in 2010, we were a single product company with a goal of offering better, easier-to-use customer service software than what was in the market," Mathrubootham said in a statement.</p><p>On Tuesday, Freshworks announced $100 million in funding from Silicon Valley investors Accel and Sequoia, with participation from Google's CapitalG. The company is now valued at $1.5 billion, making it the first enterprise software unicorn to ever come out of India, according to the company.</p><p>And in June, the company <a href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/news/stocks/freshworks-reaches-100-million-in-annual-recurring-revenue-unveils-freshworks-360-1027315582">announced</a> another milestone: $100 million in annual recurring revenue, thanks to customers like Honda and Cisco. </p><p>While India has deep connections to the US tech industry, so far it has yielded very few globally successful startups. One major exception to that is Flipkart, an e-commerce company <a href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/news/stocks/walmarts-stock-price-flipkart-acquisition-has-one-analyst-questioning-whether-the-company-can-fulfill-a-big-promise-it-just-made-to-shareholders-2018-5-1025004268">which sold to Walmart</a> for $16 billion in May. </p><p>But Freshworks investors think the 8-year-old startup - which positions itself as a low-cost alternative to customer service, sales and marketing platforms such as Salesforce and ServiceNow - could prove an exception to the rule.</p><p>"Sequoia first backed Freshworks in 2016 and didn't hesitate for a moment to double down on the investment," Sequoia investor Mohit Bhatnagar said in a statement. <ul><li><strong>SpotDraft recently raised $1.5 million in a pre-series A from Binny Bansal’s 021 Capital, Freshworks CEO Girish Mathrubootham, among others. <br /></strong></li><li><strong>The legal tech startup offers contract creation, management and analysis.<br /></strong></li><li><strong>Indian unicorn entrepreneurs are turning into investors with a purpose – to help startups scale. </strong></li></ul>A small Indian legal tech startup has been able to do what many early-stage entrepreneurs only dream of.<br /><br />SpotDraft has recently raised $1.5 million in a pre-series A round from Binny Bansal’s 021 Capital and several marquee investors like Girish Mathrubootham (Freshworks), Peeyush Ranjan (VP Engineering, Google Inc – former CTO Flipkart) and Indus Khaitan (Chief of Growth, Chargebee) among others. <br /><br />SpotDraft, which started off as an online platform to help people create contracts and automate their invoices, has evolved to offer contract creation, contract management and contract analysis. For example, it claims it helps businesses create a solid legally-binding contract, which they can negotiate and explore online. Its Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence-enabled services allow them to share with entrepreneurs the good, bad and ugly aspects about the contract. It can quickly help identify compliant and non-compliant clauses of a contract.<br /><br />Shashank Bijapur, CEO and co-founder, SpotDraft spoke to Business Insider to spill the secrets on how they convinced the marquee investors to place their bets on a startup which is just about two years old. <br /><br />According to Bijapur, what worked for them was the value proposition of the business. “At a high level, the problem statement and solution were very clear. Legal as a problem is ripe for disruption making way for complete automation of legal processes that a business has to undergo,” he said. <br /><br />Legal paperwork is one of the many hurdles that businesses and entrepreneurs face, especially in a market like India where these tend to be time-consuming. Compliance is also increasingly becoming an important exercise, as regulations become more complex.<br /><br />It also helped that Bijapur, a Harvard law grad and Wall Street lawyer and his co-founder Madhav Bhagat, a Carnegie Mellon graduate and Google, New York employee, had their background to vouch for them as well. <br /><br />With the funds raised from this round, it is looking to focus on growth in terms of team, sales and development. In the near future, it plans to expand geographies to Europe, US and Middle East, while also looking to grow revenue 10X over the next 12-14 months. <br /><br />The investment is also the latest example of Indian unicorn founders turning into evangelists for startups in the country, through mentoring and investments. Many aren’t just looking at being moneybags but also contribute to the success of other startups. <br /><br />“As founders, the access to capital may not have been as difficult as finding the right people for your business – people who can take us from 0 to 1. The value that these investors brought on board is immense and even before we were given the term sheet, we were introduced to half a dozen clients,” said Bijapur. <br /><br />Currently, the startup has over a dozen multi-national corporations as well as 1,000 SMEs as customers.
