Now, Infosys is making headlines again but this time, for the right reasons. The company has reportedly sent a confirmation regarding joining date to over 1,000 engineering graduates. Infosys sent emails to these graduates on Monday, confirming that they would start their employment on October 7, 2024. <h2>Infosys sends joining date confirmation to freshers</h2>Thousands of students from the April 2022 batch were left in limbo after participating in two rounds of pre-training in July and August. These students received an offer letter from Infosys two years back, but never got a confirmation about their joining date. Now, as per a report in ET, Infosys has finally given them a date of joining. The report reveals that students got an email from the company's recruiters that says, “Your scheduled date of joining the employment of the Company will be October 07,2024. Your location for employment is MYSORE, India." <div type="Article" hostid="261" msid="112516510" title="'Work-life balance is a myth’: Photo of man working in front of momo stall goes viral, Internet reacts" mstype="2" mssubtype="0"></div> <h2>Won't hesitate to protest in front of offices: Nites president</h2>The report added that Harpreet Singh Saluja, president of the <keyword id="20025930" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="nascent-information-technology-employees" source="keywords">Nascent Information Technology Employees</keyword> Senate (NITES), reacted to the news. “I am thrilled to announce that after relentless efforts and a formal complaint by Nascent Information Technology Employees Senate (NITES), Infosys has finally issued appointment letters to more than 1,000 (still counting) campus hires today. These young engineers, who have been waiting for nearly two years, now have a confirmed joining date of October 7, 2024. This is a huge win for NITES and all the students who stood strong in the face of uncertainty and delay,” he said and added that they won't hesitate to protest in front of the company's offices if there is a breach in joining date. "We remain vigilant... if Infosys fails to honor this commitment and breaches the joining date, we will not hesitate to organize a protest right in front of the Infosys office," he said. The delay in onboarding has affected around 2,000 engineering graduates from the 2022 batch, who received offer letters for system engineer and digital system engineer roles, with annual packages ranging from Rs 3.2-3.7 lakh. Many of these students have faced prolonged joblessness and anxiety as they waited for their joining dates. <h2>Infosys CEO reassures students</h2>Meanwhile, Infosys CEO <keyword id="20115570" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Salil-Parekh" source="keywords">Salil Parekh</keyword> recently reassured graduates that the company would honor all job offers, despite delays in the onboarding process. Parekh had confirmed that while some joining dates had been adjusted, every candidate who received an offer would still become a part of Infosys. In a statement to PTI, he was quoted saying, "Every offer that we have given, that offer will be honored, and those individuals will join Infosys. We have adjusted some dates, but beyond that, there is no change in our approach." According to a survey by job-search platform Firstnaukri, almost two-third of the freshers graduating this year are jobless at the moment as campus hirings take a hit. In fact, the situation isn’t any better for even those who do have a job offer. According to the report, nearly 44% of the graduates who have a job offer said that their companies have deferred the joining dates while the rest saw their employment offers being revoked as businesses cut down costs to keep up with the operations. The withdrawal of job offers by several companies has left many students stranded as the placement policy at several colleges does not allow a student — who has been offered once — to sit for other placements. Even the students at the premier IITs (Indian Institutes of Technology) and IIMs (Indian Institutes of Management) — who bagged ‘above-average’ salary packages — are left without a job. Gartner, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/careers/news/uber-has-revoked-job-offers-made-to-graduates-from-iims-mdi-spjimr/articleshow/75740158.cms">Uber</a> also revoked job offers extended to the management graduates at IIMs. The unemployment rate in India swelled to over 23% during the lockdown period, <a href="https://unemploymentinindia.cmie.com/kommon/bin/sr.php?kall=wshowtab&amp;tabno=0002">according to</a> the Centre of Monitoring Indian Economy (CMIE). However, as the industries reopened and resumed operations, the unemployment also declined — showing signs of revival. The urban unemployment rate during the week ending June 28 stood at 10.6%. Freshers get busy with upskilling But as the situation might not get better anytime soon, freshers are now turning to referrals and tracing their alumni network while hunting for job opportunities. Given the uncertainty, graduates are focussing on reskilling more than ever. With the availability of free skilling courses, the survey highlights that more than 70% of the college students have already enrolled in reskilling courses online. The companies hiring are also looking for students who are prepped for the future and are shifting to virtual assessments and video interviews to assess their potential hires. “It will be imperative for students to start preparing for remote interviews as a new way of getting hired,” the report said. “The pandemic has hit placement prospects of the 2020 batch across 82% colleges. It has further impacted internship offers of 74% pre-final year students. However, students are not losing morale and going virtual for their learning as well as job interviews. In fact, most companies are also using new-age technology to hire remotely,” said Sharad Sindhwani, CBO at Firstnaukri.com. More than half of India's college graduates are jobless and they want to upskill themselves in the hope for employment

<ul><li><keyword id="19895063" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="india" source="keywords">India</keyword>’s top IT sector companies have reduced their headcount by 75,000 in the last one year.</li><li>New GCCs setting-up operations in India might have hired a similar number of <keyword id="19913553" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="tech" source="keywords">tech</keyword> talent, say experts.</li><li>Even with renewed hiring, IT sector hiring as a whole suffered even as software product company hiring went down in the last 12 months.</li><li>In 2024, hiring intent in the IT sector increased only 3%, even as overall hiring intent is at 19%, says Taggd. </li></ul>Headcount in the top IT services firms in India is down by 75,000 in the last one year. However, experts say that there is no large-scale furore over joblessness in the system due to the extensive hiring undertaken by global capability centers (GCCs). Many new GCCs are setting-up shop in India, which is giving a much-needed push to sluggish tech talent intake by IT services companies. Six out of eight IT bellwethers like TCS, Infosys, Wipro, LTI Mindtree, Cognizant and Tech Mahindra saw their headcount go down in the last 12 months, as per Xpheno, a staffing services company. 2022. “The calendar year of 2024 too has begun with a rollback of headcounts to a pre-two year level, in what is clearly a cycle of sustained adversities the IT services cohort is dealing with,” said Kamal <keyword id="20519296" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="karanth" source="keywords">Karanth</keyword>, co-founder of Xpheno. GCCs: The bright spot It’s not just IT services companies are cutting down hiring, job demand in software companies saw massive drop along with startups. But there is one bright spot in the tech market which is GCCs. “GCCs had recruited similar numbers (around 60,000) in the last one year, and that’s why we do not see a bloodbath on the streets. Around 100-110 GCCs set-up shop in India in the last two years, and 60 of them came in the last one year itself,” Karanth tells Business Insider India. GCCs are international companies which set-up shop in India, which takes care of activities like business support functions, back-office tasks, IT infrastructure and more. Since they kick-off operations, most of them hire anywhere between 500-2,000 people. GCCs have now become one of the six top sectors which hire tech talent that includes IT services companies, software product companies, startups, consulting firms and non-tech sectors which hire tech talent. GCCs, IT services and software product companies are the three sectors which hire techies in large numbers “Among the three, only GCCs will continue to hire in 2024, while IT services and software product companies will see at least two muted quarters ahead,” says Karanth. Going by their enthusiastic uptake of office spaces, they seem to be intent on hiring in large numbers. As per a Colliers report, office space uptake of around 30 mn square feet with large deals (of over 100,000 sq ft) have shown an impressive 24% annual growth in 2023. Almost 40% of the large deals in the top six cities have come from GCCs, particularly from technology and BFSI sectors. “More than half of the large GCC deals achieved closure in the last quarter of 2023, indicating renewed momentum in GCC activity in the country. Large pool of talent, cost-effective rentals, adequate Grade A developments and favorable office market ecosystem will continue to uphold India’s vantage positioning from a capability centre perspective,” said <keyword id="20454099" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="vimal-nadar" source="keywords">Vimal Nadar</keyword>, senior director and head of research, Colliers India. Tech hiring to remain sluggish With only one of its sub-sectors keen on hiring, the IT sector’s recruitment outlook as a whole has come down. As per a report by Taggd, the IT sector’s hiring intent for 2024 increased by 3%. The overall hiring intent across all the sectors however increased 19% for the current calendar year. (Eds: Combining related stories) New Delhi, Apr 29 () With lakhs of migrant workers and students stranded at various places for over a month due to the nationwide lockdown, the government on Wednesday announced plans to allow their movement to help them reach their homes, including by crossing state borders. The COVID-19 tally, in the meantime, rose further and fresh indications emerged about the lockdown continuing beyond May 3, at least in some form and in some parts of the country. In its evening update, the Union Health Ministry said the COVID-19 death toll has risen to 1,008, with a record jump of 71 in the last 24 hours, while the number of confirmed infections has climbed to 31,787 in the country with more than 1,800 cases getting detected since Tuesday evening. Close to 7,800 people have recovered too. Punjab, which has reported 375 cases and 19 deaths, announced extension of the lockdown in the state by two weeks after May 3, though some relaxations have been given in areas that do not fall under the containment or red zones. However, containment zones will continue to remain under total lockdown, Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh said. In West Bengal, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee said experts and doctors are of the opinion that the restrictions imposed to check the spread of COVID-19 should continue in the state till the end of May. She, however, also announced some relaxations, including opening of standalone shops in green zones and non-containment zones with all precautionary and social distancing measures. Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao has already announced extension of the lockdown in his state till May 7 without any relaxation. During his last interaction with chief ministers on Monday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had told them that the economy would need to be given importance too while fighting the COVID-19 pandemic. Ever since its emergence in China last December, more than 31 lakh have tested positive for the deadly virus infection worldwide while the death toll has topped 2 lakh. Some countries have, however, begun easing the lockdown. The US, which is among the worst hit globally, reported that its economy shrank at a 4.8 per cent annual rate in the last quarter, triggering a recession that will end the country's longest ever expansion period. Following guidelines from the Centre, some states in India have also allowed opening of standalone shops in non-containment zones, while several state governments have been demanding steps to allow movement of migrant workers to help them reach their respective homes. Some states including Uttar Pradesh have already undertaken special initiatives to bring back migrant workers and students. To help these people who have been stuck in various cities for over a month, many of whom have been left jobless and homeless due to the lockdown, the Union Home Ministry has now passed an order to allow their inter-state movement to reach their respective destinations, subject to certain conditions. This will also apply to pilgrims, tourists, students and other people stranded at different places. In the order, Union Home Secretary Ajay Bhalla said buses shall be used for transport of such groups of stranded people and these vehicles will be sanitised and will have to follow safe social distancing norms in seating. Listing the conditions, the ministry said all states and union territories should designate nodal authorities and develop standard protocols for receiving and sending such stranded persons. In case of movement beyond states or UTs, the sending and receiving states will need to consult each other and mutually agree to the movement by road. These people would be screened and only those found asymptomatic would be allowed to proceed. On arrival at their destination, they would be assessed by local health authorities and kept in home or institutional quarantine, as required by the assessment, the order said. In Maharashtra, Home Minister Anil Deshmukh said his government is in talks with chief ministers of other states over facilitating return of migrant workers to their native places in a planned manner. Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal said he is in touch with other state governments on the Home Ministry order and told migrant workers to stay put till he informs them about the final decision in one or two days. Mumbai and Delhi are among major urban centres where a large number of workers from other states are stranded and have been demanding transport arrangements be made for them to go back to their native places. Some states are said to be reluctant in allowing return of their natives from other places due to fears of the infection. The University Grants Commission (UGC), in the meantime, said the new academic session for freshers will begin in universities from September and for already enrolled students in August. It also advised universities to follow a six-day week pattern and devise proforma to record travel or stay history of staff members and students for the lockdown period. The central government also asked its 48.34 lakh employees to download 'Aarogya Setu' mobile app immediately and report to office only when it shows "safe" status for commuting. The app, developed by the government, helps people assess themselves on the risk of them contracting the coronavirus infection. According to the latest Health Ministry data, there are close to 23,000 active COVID-19 cases in the country. Union Health Minister Harsh Vardhan said of the total active COVID-19 cases in the country, only 0.33 per cent patients are on ventilators, 1.5 per cent are on oxygen support and 2.34 per cent are in ICU. Of the total 1,008 deaths, as per the Ministry figures, Maharashtra tops the tally while it also has the highest number of confirmed cases in the country. In Maharashtra, Mumbai's Dharavi area reported 14 new coronavirus cases on Wednesday, taking the overall tally to 344. Dharavi, considered as the biggest slum in Asia, has so far reported 18 deaths. In the national capital, the new confirmed cases included 11 family members of an LNJP Hospital dietician, who had earlier tested positive. However, none of the hospital employees, who came in contact with the dietician, have tested positive. Tamil Nadu Chief Minister K Palaniswami said the spread of COVID-19 in the state is largely under control, but the contagion is "easily" spreading in Chennai due to its large population.
