Facebook followed the next day, severing ties between Trump and another 33 million accounts.</p><p>Some initially thought <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/parler-trump-organization-40-percent-ownership-deal-talks-ethics-concerns-2021-2">Trump might reappear on Parler</a>, a <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/what-is-parler-app-social-media-twitter">far-right haven</a> that the Trump Organization had previously held talks with, as an anonymous "<a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/trump-join-parler-person-x-account-john-matze-2021-1">Person X</a>" - but those efforts fell through.</p><p>Since then, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/trump-planning-to-launch-his-own-social-media-platform-soon-2021-3?r=ts-sub">Trump's advisors</a> have repeatedly teased new <keyword id="6354777" type="COMPANY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Media">media</keyword> companies that the former president might create to broadcast his message, including one built by his <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/sources-trump-eyeing-parscale-platform-for-social-media-launch-2021-3?r=ts-sub">former campaign manager Brad Parscale</a>.</p><p>But <a href="https://www.axios.com/trump-social-media-platform-freespace-a77d7dfc-3288-48bf-bc7e-8942da24bdbd.html?utm_source=twitter&amp;utm_medium=social&amp;utm_campaign=editorial&amp;utm_content=politics-trumpsocialappumpsocialapp">Axios</a> reported Wednesday that Trump is also in talks with a relatively obscure social media app called FreeSpace, an affiliate of Skylab Apps, that has just 20,000 downloads and not many users.</p><p>By comparison, Twitter has <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/twitter-earnings-q4-revenue-eps-new-users-2021-2?r=ts-sub">192 million daily users</a>, according to its latest quarterly earnings report.</p><p>The details of a Trump-FreeSpace deal, if one is reached at all, aren't yet clear, according to Axios. A spokesperson for Trump did not respond to a request for comment.</p><p>FreeSpace says its app is backed by science that makes people "'addicted' to doing good," "built on the power of positivity," and wants to "make social media fun again." It would appear to be an odd partnership for Trump, who is one of the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/misinformation-fell-73-after-trump-was-banned-across-social-media-2021-1">world's largest promoters of misinformation</a> and has consistently used <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/trump-aired-racist-misleading-coronavirus-claims-at-rally-2020-6?r=ts-sub">racist</a>, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/trumps-worst-insults-toward-women-2018-10?r=ts-sub">sexist</a>, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/republican-voters-have-become-more-xenophobic-under-trump-2019-7">xenophobic</a>, and <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/ex-pence-aide-olivia-troye-fears-violence-january-trump-rally-2020-12">violence-inciting</a> language that eventually got him booted from mainstream platforms.</p>

<div type="image" title="trump twitter ban" height="1476" width="2953" msid="82004972" hostid="261"></div><ul class="summary-list"><li><keyword id="6354862" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="trump">Trump</keyword>'s plan to start a new <keyword id="6354632" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="social-media">social media</keyword> network is highly unlikely to succeed, experts have told Insider.</li><li>The former president is reportedly planning a new platform to recover the audience he lost after being kicked off <keyword id="6354616" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="Twitter">Twitter</keyword>.</li><li>But Trump will struggle, experts believe, to make any new platform succeed financially.</li></ul><p>Donald Trump's plan to create a new social media platform is doomed to fail, experts have told Insider, with the former president unlikely to extend his following beyond a dwindling number of his remaining supporters.</p><p>Kicked off Twitter, <keyword id="6354576" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="facebook">Facebook</keyword>, Instagram, and YouTube after the Capitol riot on January 6, the former president has spent the last few months in the digital wilderness, resorting to issuing press statements via email.</p><p>Now, says his aide Jason Miller, he's planning to come roaring back with his own social media network within "about two or three months."</p><p>"I do think we're going to see President Trump returning to social media in probably about two or three months here with his own platform," <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/trump-planning-to-launch-his-own-social-media-platform-soon-2021-3">Miller said in March</a>. "This is something that I think will be the hottest ticket in social media. </p><p>"It's going to completely redefine the game, and everybody is going to be waiting and watching to see what exactly President Trump does, but it will be his own platform," he said.</p><p>Axios <a href="https://www.axios.com/trump-social-media-platform-freespace-a77d7dfc-3288-48bf-bc7e-8942da24bdbd.html">reported</a> that Trump's team is in conversations with taking over or partnering with smaller apps, including one called FreeSpace, which only counts a few thousand downloads to date.</p><p>However, some experts doubt that the project will ever get off the ground.</p><p>"Donald Trump says a lot of things. Before he was elected, he said he would rarely leave the White House and that <a href="https://www.politifact.com/truth-o-meter/promises/trumpometer/promise/1420/not-take-vacations/">he wouldn't have time to play golf</a> and that he'd <a href="https://www.politico.com/blogs/2016-gop-primary-live-updates-and-results/2016/04/trump-no-tweeting-president-222408">give up Twitter if elected,"</a> Peter Loge, an associate professor at George Washington University's School of Media and Public Affairs, told Insider.</p><p>"Until the talked-about social media platform is up, running, and being used, I wouldn't assume it exists."</p><h2>Trump will struggle to recreate the audience he had on Twitter</h2><div type="image" title="trump phone social media" height="992" width="1984" msid="82004974" hostid="261"></div>Even if Trump does get off the ground, experts believe that Trump will have a difficult time recapturing the success he enjoyed on Twitter.<p>Even though Trump's reported plan to partner with an existing app might mean that the network may not face many of the technical hurdles associated with launching a brand-new app, experts said that Trump will likely struggle to persuade people who are not already his loyal followers to sign up to it.</p><p>"This [new] social media network is in my professional judgment unlikely to grow Trump's following," said Professor Stephen A. Greyser, a marketing and communications expert at Harvard Business School.</p><p>"It is dominantly oriented [on] maintaining his existing following."</p><p>Twitter was a tool credited with helping him to capture the Republican presidential nomination in 2016 and subsequently the presidency itself and a highly effective means to communicate his unfiltered thoughts to millions of followers once he was in the White House.</p><p>The nature of Twitter was that Trump's often provocative political statements would be seen and heard across the political spectrum, rather than only by his existing fanbase.</p><p>However, if Trump's ambition in launching a new platform is merely to maintain regular contact with his existing followers, then it may prove an effective tool, said Professor Greyser.</p><p>"It is serving as a reminder to existing users, so to speak, of the brand. But it's unlikely to be attracting new brand adherence," he said.</p><p>This may not be enough for Trump.</p><p>The signs since he left the White House are that he wants to <a href="https://edition.cnn.com/2021/04/08/politics/2022-senate-donald-trump-endorsements/index.html">maintain and expand his influence over the Republican party</a>. He's even <a href="https://www.google.com/search?q=trump+cpac+site%3Abusinessinsider.com&amp;client=safari&amp;rls=en&amp;biw=1440&amp;bih=705&amp;tbm=nws&amp;ei=7mpwYOECsePv9Q-U7IGIAw&amp;oq=trump+cpac+site%3Abusinessinsider.com&amp;gs_l=psy-ab.3...20042.20253.0.20364.4.4.0.0.0.0.110.306.1j2.3.0....0...1c.1.64.psy-ab..3.0.0....0.AK4RGZALXG44.psy-ab..3.0.0....0.AK4RGZALXG4">hinted several times that he is eyeing another run for the GOP presidential nomination in 2024</a>. It is not clear that a new social media network will be much help in that regard.</p><h2>Trump's new platform could struggle financially</h2><div type="image" title="trump twitter" height="1476" width="2953" msid="82004976" hostid="261"></div>"Any new site would face stiff competition from others trying to get a sliver of attention from Americans already overwhelmed with online options," said Peter Loge.<p>"You have to sell ads or data to make that work, which means you need enough people to buy the ads and the data."</p><p>"That means the service has to have enough users to make ads and data worth buying. Those are users who have to be pried away from other services that they are already using and from which they are already benefiting." </p><p>"There are hundreds of social media services out there, all competing for limited user attention and limited ad dollars. Trump would presumably start with a significant base, but would likely have trouble expanding that base beyond his current fans."</p><p>The midterms next year may provide a clear indication as to whether Trump newly equipped with his own social media network, will continue to exert the same sort of oversized grip on the Republican party he has in recent years.</p>

Timothy Valero</span></p><p class="caption">Marine Corps field radio operators remove the free space optic system from a tactical elevated antenna mass at Camp Hansen, Okinawa, August 17, 2018.</p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>The <keyword id="6354810" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="defense">Defense</keyword> Advanced Research Projects Agency has been <a href="https://www.militaryaerospace.com/articles/2015/12/free-space-optical.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">working on</a> sensors and hardware to send and receive signals from free-space optical technology - which sends light beams through the air rather than a cable - for some time.</p><p>Early last year, the Defense Department awarded $45 million for a three-year project involving three of the service branches, focused on developing a laser communications system - "basically fiber optic communications without the fiber," Linda Thomas, whose team at the Naval Research Laboratory got about one-third of the grant money, <a href="https://breakingdefense.com/2017/05/say-it-with-lasers-45m-dod-prize-for-optical-coms/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">told Breaking Defense</a> at the time.</p><p>Thomas' team's Tactical Line-of-sight Optical communications Network, or TALON, was able to send messages through laser beams over distances similar to those of Marine Corps tactical radios, which typically can range to about 45 miles.</p><p>Free-space-optical communications systems are available commercially, but their range is limited. The Naval Research Lab team was able to exceed the range of those systems, a problem that involved sending the low-power beam through the atmosphere without it being made unintelligible, though Thomas <a href="https://breakingdefense.com/2017/05/say-it-with-lasers-45m-dod-prize-for-optical-coms/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">didn't say</a> how they did it.</p><p>Marines have already gone into the field to test a free-space optics system developed by the Naval Research Lab.</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><img src="https://static-ssl.businessinsider.com/image/5b7ee4ac2be4ab1d2f8b4ef4-1400/4668993.jpg" border="0" alt="Marine Corps Marines laser radio communications" data-mce-source="US Marine Corps/Pfc. Kindo Go</span></p><p class="caption">Marines lift a tactical elevated antenna mass mounted with the free space optic system at Camp Hansen, Okinawa, August 17, 2018.</p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>Marines from the III Marine Expeditionary Force tested a free-space optics system that "transfers data on a highly secured and nearly undetectable infrared laser, separate from the radio frequency spectrum" in Okinawa this month, <a href="https://www.dvidshub.net/news/289920/marines-test-future-wireless-communications" target="_blank" rel="noopener">according</a> to a Marine Corps release.</p><p>The mobile system allows more data - larger files and imagery - to be transmitted without using more of the radio-frequency spectrum, "<span>an already constrained resource," one of the Marines involved said.</span></p><p><span>"When it first came up, we thought it would be a lot more difficult to set up and understand," <a href="https://www.dvidshub.net/news/289920/marines-test-future-wireless-communications" target="_blank" rel="noopener">said</a> Marine Sgt. William Holt, a cyber-systems administrator. "When the Marines heard 'free space optics' and 'lasers,' they got nervous about that. Then when they actually got behind the gear and were able to operate it, it was easier than expected."</span></p><p>Thomas and other engineers from the Naval Research Laboratory were also on hand.</p><p><span>"We came out to Okinawa because it was one of the harshest humid environments with highly variable weather on very short time scales," she <a href="https://www.dvidshub.net/news/289920/marines-test-future-wireless-communications" target="_blank" rel="noopener">said.</a> "We are looking at how the system operates and handles these conditions and how we can better fulfill the needs of the future Marine Corps."</span></p><h2>'<span>The threat is out there'</span></h2><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><img src="https://static-ssl.businessinsider.com/image/5a20697ff914c360018b724c-1462/screen shot 2017-09-25 at 10703 pm.png" border="0" alt="Russian troops Zapad-2017" data-mce-source="Russian Ministry of Defense" data-mce-caption="Russian troops participating in Zapad-2017." /><p class="source"><span>Russian Ministry of Defense</span></p><p class="caption">Russian troops participating in Zapad-2017.</p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>US Marines are not the only ones gearing up to communicate in a contested environment.</p><p>China's People's Liberation Army considers electronic warfare a central component of its operations, and its EW doctrine "emphasizes using electromagnetic spectrum weapons to suppress or to deceive enemy electronic equipment," the Defense Department said in a report about Chinese military capabilities released this month.</p><p>Chinese units "routinely conduct jamming and antijamming operations against multiple communication and radar systems and GPS satellite systems in force-on-force exercises," the report said.
