<ul class="summary-list"><li>Google's Sameer Samat says AI offers a unique opportunity for the Android ecosystem.</li><li>Gemini AI on Android operates at the system UI level, providing context-aware capabilities.</li></ul><p><a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/google-io-exec-comments-apple-iphone-android-texting-issues-rcs-2023-5">Sameer Samat</a> is a powerful guy these days.</p><p>I recently saw him on Netflix's Drive to Survive TV show, bringing the hammer down on <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/netflix-drive-to-survive-audience-tops-50-million-mclaren-ceo-2021-9">Zak Brown</a>, the head of McLaren's Formula 1 racing team. <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/google-killer-ai-app-consumers-2024-5">Google</a> is a big sponsor and Samat wanted to see improvement.</p><p>And last month, Samat moved up via a <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/google-big-shakeup-gives-more-power-to-deepmind-pixel-leaders-2024-4">reorg</a> at the top of Google. He's now President of Android Ecosystems, which means he runs <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/guides/tech/best-android-phone">Android</a>, the world's most popular smartphone platform. This job also includes Android TV, Android Auto, and new augmented and mixed-reality technology.</p><p>At Google IO, I got a chance to interview Samat. I started by asking him how <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/google-ai-can-ingest-books-data-2024-3">AI</a> is changing the smartphone market, competition with Apple, and the distribution of Google's technology.</p><p>"AI is having a moment. It's a huge opportunity for the Android ecosystem," he said. "We are going to be very fast-moving to not miss this opportunity. It's a once-in-a-generation moment to reinvent what phones can do. We are going to seize that moment."</p><p>With Google's new Gemini AI models, "we can do things that have never been possible on smartphones," he added.</p><p>The 800 pound smartphone gorilla, Apple — this was not a word uttered by Samat during the interview. At one point he said "the other OS," referring to Apple's iOS mobile platform, which leads in the US, but still lags far behind Android globally.</p><h2 id="b8aec027-2963-4282-a4ef-899417e3e61b">More than an app</h2><p>On that "other OS," Google's Gemini is just an app. On Android, it's way more, according to Samat.</p><p>He showed me an example, by pressing and holding the power button on his <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/guides/tech/google-pixel-8-pro-review">Pixel 8</a> phone. This summoned Gemini to appear on top of the YouTube app he was in.</p><p>There was a video playing and he asked Gemini questions about the clip. Gemini analyzed the footage and responded from the relevant part of the video. He then pulled out a <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/guides/tech/samsung-galaxy-s24-order-price-release-date-features-specs#:~:text=Samsung%20unveiled%20its%20latest%20lineup,Plus%2C%20and%20Galaxy%20S24%20Ultra.">Samsung S24</a> and did the same thing, but touched and dragged up from the bottom right of the screen to summon Gemini.</p><h2 id="43aee0bf-e951-4d10-8854-f1bdba3551ee">The "System UI" level</h2><p>This is possible because Google has baked Gemini AI models and assistant technology into the "System UI" level on Android devices. That's below the app level, where the technical important stuff happens.</p><p>"You can't do stuff like this if you're just an app on a device," Samat said. "We can do this on Android, so Gemini can come into the situation with context, above or to the side of what's happening."</p><p>Without being hemmed into an app, Gemini is free to roam around more of the device and understand the context of what you're doing at any moment.</p><p>Samat stressed that this only happens if users summon the AI with intentional actions such as that button press on the Pixel 8 or the swipe on the S24.</p><h2 id="aa6c8adb-ee63-426e-a8fa-6400ef05fdd0">On-device AI</h2><p>He cited another example: On-device AI with the smaller Gemini Nano model. This runs on the Pixel 8 and the S24, with more Android devices coming soon.</p><p>This allows Gemini to do useful things while not sending user data to cloud data centers.</p><p>One use case for this approach: If you're using an encrypted messaging service on your phone, you can't send that data off to a data center for AI models to process. So an AI assistant or agent can't help you write replies and do other cool stuff when texting.</p><p>With Nano, Google has on-device AI that can process these encrypted messages and provide help on crafting replies and taking other actions. None of that data will leave the device, Samat said. </p><h2 id="c511338e-6156-452c-9654-28136675a663">Gemini on iPhones?</h2><p>Then I asked Samat a big business-strategy question: Does Google want its best Gemini models distributed more prominently on Apple devices?</p><p>Google already pays Apple billions of dollars a year to have Search as the default on Safari. Will it do a similar deal to distribute Gemini on iPhones, for instance?</p><p>Samat declined to comment. More generally, he said Google's broad goal is to serve all users around the world.</p><p>However, he stressed that this doesn't mean the company can't build unique experiences on Android devices, including many new AI experiences.</p><h2 id="6ad885c1-b362-4800-8beb-be939d994458">Circle to Search</h2><p>He cited <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.in/tech/news/google-launches-circle-to-search-heres-how-it-works/articleshow/106987962.cms"><u>Circle to Search</u></a> as an example. This lets you search for anything you see on your phone screen by simply circling, scribbling or highlighting it. For example, if you're looking at a video and find a hat or sunglasses you want to buy, all you need to do is launch the Circle to Search feature and circle the product.</p><p>This works through a combination of Google Search, Gemini AI technology, and Android — something that's not possible on any other platform, Samat said.</p><p>These experiences require end-to-end optimization, which is what Google is doing with its Pixel devices and with Samsung, and soon other Android providers. </p><p>"AI is a fundamental differentiator for Android. Samsung is a critical part of this, as is Pixel," he said. </p><p>"Is this all about our Pixel devices? No!" he added. Samsung and other Android device makers are crucial in this next wave of AI-powered devices, he explained.</p>

Also, BharOS comes with No Default Apps (NDA), which means, the users are not forced to use apps that they are not familiar with or that they may not trust. Institute claimed that the users would get more control, freedom, and flexibility to choose and use only apps that fit their needs. <br /><br />BharOS is based on the Linux kernel and is intended to be used in a wide range of devices, including desktops, laptops, and mobile devices. It was developed by JandK Operations Private Limited (JAndKops), a non-profit organization incubated at IIT Madras. Not just that, BharOS does not come with any pre-installed applications. <br /><br />It is not clear how an individual could replace a pre-install OS with BharOS. There are also no details on how long the BharOS will receive security and software updates. Moreover, it is also unclear if the team that has developed BharOS will join hands with the OEM to launch the smartphone supported by BharOS.<br /><br />The developers of BharOS have provided no information on when the OS will be available for download. In addition, there are no details about which smartphones will support BharOS. <ul class="summary-list"><li>A cyberattack is an assault on any computer or network, almost always launched from another computer or network.</li><li>There are a lot of ways malicious actors can launch a cyberattack, including malware, zero-day exploits, and denial-of-service attacks.</li><li>Here's a brief overview of <keyword id="116273" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="cyberattacks">cyberattacks</keyword> and what you need to know about their risk.</li></ul><p>We live in an age in which every major government, military organization, corporation, and medical institution relies on computer technology for nearly every aspect of its operation, and those systems are always at risk of being attacked. </p><p>A cyberattack is just that: an assault on a computer, computer network, or the data stored within that network. The intent of the attack can vary - some attacks are intended to disable the computer system while others intend to gain control over it. Still others intend to infiltrate the system to steal or destroy data. While cyberattacks are often aimed at organizations, individuals are not immune from cyberattack either. </p><p>It's important to understand that cyberattacks can be launched by any kind of malicious actor, including criminals whose primary goal is monetary gain, state actors trying to gain leverage through intelligence gathering, corporate espionage or other spycraft, and terrorists attempting to damage, destroy, or gain access to computer systems. The tools and methods used by all these malicious actors may be largely the same. </p><h2><strong>Types of cyberattacks</strong></h2><p>There are a number of common kinds of cyberattacks. For example, a MITM attack might use a compromised Wi-Fi hotspot to masquerade as a site that users need to log into, allowing the MITM to harvest critical information. </li><li><strong>Denial-of-service (DoS):</strong> In a denial of service attack, a malicious user overwhelms a computer system with traffic or data requests so it can't perform any legitimate activities. This is often in the form of a distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attack, in which a large number of computers are used for the attack, often remotely controlled by malware without the actual owner's knowledge.  </li><li><strong>SQL injection:</strong> Many computer networks rely on Structured Query Language (SQL) databases for internal storage and operation. An SQL injection attack occurs when an attacker inserts SQL commands to the computer (such as via a form on a webpage). If the network's security isn't robust enough, it might allow that SQL instruction to be processed, which can compromise the network.  </li></ul><h2>How to prevent a cyberattack</h2><p>There is an entire industry focused on preventing cyberattacks, staffed with IT and cybersecurity professionals. </p><p>To prevent attacks, teams of cybersecurity personnel typically develop detailed protection plans that include operational security procedures designed to protect physical systems and the data stored within those networks. This includes data access procedures, identity and credential verification, user training and education, and more.</p><p>IT professionals also install and manage anti-malware software and train users to recognize and deal with spam, phishing attacks, and malware that slips through the filters and protective software. The app will allow workers to "digitally clock in" with geo-fencing technology, check their schedules up to two weeks in advance, and request time off or scheduling changes. The app's push-t0-talk feature is an answer to walkie-talkies, allowing workers to "instantly connect with one another." It also features Ask Sam, Walmart's in-house voice-activated personal assistant for employees.</p><p>As part of the app's rollout, Walmart plans to give out 740,000 free Samsung Galaxy XCover Pro smartphones to its workers. The devices will come with a case and a protection plan, and will be considered work phones. The Me@Walmart app is also available for download on personal phones. </p><p style="font-weight: 400;">"The idea of this app started as a way to manage associates' schedules and has grown into our single in-store app for U.S. associates, saving them time and helping them be more efficient," Walmart US People Operations Senior Vice President and Product Drew Holler and Associate Experience Vice President Kellie Romack wrote in a blog <a href="https://corporate.walmart.com/newsroom/2021/06/03/walmart-unveils-all-in-one-associate-app-me-walmart-and-gives-740-000-associates-a-new-samsung-smartphone">post</a>. "We believe it's the first of its kind in the retail industry."</p><p style="font-weight: 400;">The phones will start to replaced Walmart's supply of company-owned handheld devices, shared by store workers. Holler and Romack wrote that employees will only be able to access Me@Walmart's "work features while they're on the clock" and that the retail giant "will not have access to any personal data."</p><p style="font-weight: 400;">The executives also wrote that, soon enough, the app will allow workers to speed up the stocking process.</p><p style="font-weight: 400;">"Instead of scanning each box individually, associates just hold up their device and, using augmented reality, highlight the boxes that are ready to go," the execs wrote. Walmart is giving out 740,000 Samsung Smartphones to store employees as the retail giant rolls out a new app for its workforce

New Delhi, There is an extreme shortage of medical abortion drugs across the country, with acute crisis due to lack of stocks in Delhi, Punjab, <keyword id="20154" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="tamil-nadu">Tamil Nadu</keyword>, Haryana and <keyword id="6355554" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Madhya-Pradesh">Madhya Pradesh</keyword>, a study on Monday revealed.<br /><br />The study conducted by the Foundation for Reproductive Health Services on 1,500 chemists showed that merely one per cent of the chemists in Punjab, two per cent in Tamil Nadu and Haryana, 6.5 per cent in Madhya Pradesh and 34 per cent in Delhi have stocked the abortion drug.<br /><br />The state which fared best is Assam at 69.6 per cent.<br /><br />As per the study, the non-stocking of drugs seems to be linked with over-regulation by drug control authorities. About 79 per cent of chemists do not stock the drugs to avoid legal issues and excessive documentation requirements.<br /><br />Even in Assam, which has the highest stocking percentage, 58 per cent chemists report over-regulation of drugs. State-wise legal barriers continue to be a <keyword id="5636325" type="POSITION" weightage="20" keywordseo="major-reason">major reason</keyword> for non-stocking of the abortion drugs, with 63 per cent chemists in Haryana, 40 per cent in Madhya Pradesh, 74 per cent in Punjab and 79 per cent in Tamil Nadu reporting so.<br /><br />FRHS Chief Executive Officer V.S Chandrashekar told IANS: "The main reason for not stocking drugs is over-regulation by local drug authorities. Even while it is a Schedule K drug and is even given to ASHA workers to distribute in communities, many retailers are not stocking them due to misconceptions and legal barriers."<br /><br />He added that medical abortion drugs are the most <keyword id="9732617" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="preferred-method">preferred method</keyword> with 81 per cent of abortions being administered through them and hence their lack of availability hinders women, who do not wish to opt for surgical abortion methods.<br /><br />"In the midst of the pandemic when movement of people is restricted and clinical methods of family planning are not adequately available, there is a dire need to ensure unrestricted access to drugs," said Chandrashekar, who is also the member of Pratigya Campaign Advisory Group.<br /><br />While the purpose of the study was to verify the availability of drugs, the findings also reveal that Emergency Contraceptive Pills (ECP) are not being stocked by chemists in the state of Tamil Nadu.<br /><br />Only 3 per cent of the chemists surveyed in the state reported stocking ECPs and 90 per cent not stocking shared that the pills are banned in the state. Emergency Contraceptive Pills are non-prescription drugs and are also stocked and distributed by ASHAs under the National Family Planning Program. Not allowing chemists to stock ECP denies women of Tamil Nadu a safe and easy to use contraceptive choice.<br /><br />The primary reason for non-availability of MA drugs seems to be the incorrect understanding that medical abortion combipacks can be used for gender biased sex selection among regulatory officials.A Medical abortion combipacks is indicated for use only up to nine weeks while an ultrasound can detect the sex of the fetus at 13-14 weeks gestation.<br /><br />Chemists, however, do not seem to share this misconception, only about 10 per cent chemists across the states where the study was conducted, reported that MA drugs can be used for sex-selective termination of pregnancy. In Tamil Nadu however, 36 per cent have this misunderstanding.<br /><br />"The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare should clarify that MA drugs which are approved for use up to nine weeks in India cannot be used for sex selective termination of pregnancy. This will allow women to seek medical support and access drugs with a prescription," said Dr <keyword id="9732618" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="rashmi-ardey">Rashmi Ardey</keyword>, Clinical Services Director, FRHS India<br /><br />Scrutiny and over-regulation, leading to non-availability of MA drugs is a major cause of concern and is likely to result in millions of women being denied access to a safe abortion method. WHO in 2019, included MA drugs in its Core List of Essential Medicines, removing an earlier advisory which required medical supervision while taking the drugs.<br /><br />Removing unnecessary barriers in stocking of MA drugs will ensure that women are able to access the method of their choice. "Non availability of MA will push women to seek surgical abortion which can be cost intensive and can further widen the access gaps," said Debanjana Choudhuri, Senior Manager-Partnerships, FRHS India.<br /><br />The study recommends addressing misconceptions regarding medical abortion and gender-biased sex-selection; harmonising Central Drugs Standard Control Organisation approvals and the MTP Act, amending rules to allow MBBS Doctors to prescribe MA drugs increasing investments in safe abortion communication and providing support to women who access drugs by setting up toll-free helpline numbers.<br /><br /><br />

Delhi, Punjab, Haryana, MP, TN are facing a shortage of abortion pills amid COVID-19 outbreak

By Laxmi Devi <p>(Pic: 30-03-2020_000187B)</p><p> New Delhi, Mar 30 () Many poor beneficiaries registered under the Public Distribution System (PDS) who are pinning their hopes on free and subsidised ration supplies for their survival during the COVID-19 lockdown are disappointed to get wheat at a time even flour mills are shut.</p><p> In most parts of the country, local flour millers and chakki shops are not allowed to operate, while some are not willing to function due to fear of action by the police which is enforcing strictly the lockdown rules to stop the spread of the disease as the confirmed cases in the country rise to 1,071.</p><p> "What do I do with wheat? Nearby chakkis (flour mills) are shut. Where do I convert wheat into flour? What is the point of buying wheat when we cannot consume?" Mustafa (25), a factory worker, told  after getting the ration supply from a fair price shop at Sarai Kale Khan in the national capital.</p><p> Mustafa received 6 kg wheat and 1.5 kg rice per person for free on Monday and did not get his monthly quota of foodgrains at a subsidised rate in the absence of stock at the depot.</p><p> Under the PDS, the government is giving monthly 5 kg foodgrains at a subsidised rate of Rs 2 kg for wheat and Rs 3 kg for rice.</p><p> To ensure enough food to the poor during the lockdown, the government last week decided to distribute for free 5 kg of rice or wheat per person and 1 kg pulse per household for the next three months under the Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Yojana (PMGKY).</p><p> Like Mustafa, many ration card holders -- some were working in nearby factories, some as servants, security guards and rickshaw pullers before the lockdown announced on March 24 -- who got wheat from the ration shop were disappointed.</p><p> This was the situation reported in wheat-consuming states of North India even though the central government has given permission to states and union territories to supply 'wheat flour' if they wish at their expense.</p><p> "Under the PDS, we basically deliver wheat. It is logistically not possible to intervene at a local level by the Government of India. However, necessary advisory will be issued to the state governments to look into the matter," Food Secretary Ravi Kant said.</p><p> Except for Punjab, Rajasthan and Haryana, most states distribute a mix of rice and wheat through PDS. However under the PMGKY, mostly rice will be distributed for free, he said.</p><p> "It is difficult suddenly to convert wheat into atta (wheat flour) and distribute via PDS. If at all to be done and can be managed, it has to be done at the state level," Kant said.</p><p> However, some states like Telangana have taken measures to distribute wheat flour along with rice and some cash to ration card holders who have become jobless owing to the lockdown.</p><p> Uttar Pradesh Roller Flour Millers Association President Pramod Kumar Vaish said, "The Centre is distributing wheat at a cheaper rate of Rs 2 per kg, while the cost of converting it into flour and packaging is over Rs 3 per kg."</p><p> The Association has sent a proposal to the Uttar Pradesh government that they are ready to provide their service for PDS purpose.</p><p> "But, the state administration has not shown interest due to the financial implications it would have on the state exchequer in the absence of a clear central policy," he said.</p><p> Vaish said, "There is a problem in distributing wheat in the current situation. How can poor go and get it grinded when chakkis are not opened?"</p><p> The Association cannot intervene as it has big flour millers as its members and not small chakkis at local level, he added.</p><p> The only way out now is to allow one or two local chakkis in each locality to operate during the lockdown or install at least one portable chakki near ration depot for converting wheat into flour.</p> It may be noted that there are over 81 crore poor people registered under the PDS, which comprise two-thirds of the country's population. The company cites an expired distribution contract with Fox as the reason.</p><p>Roku's tweet suggests alternative options via other apps on its platform like Fubo, Sling, Hulu Live, and YouTube TV that will stream Super Bowl LIV, but none of these services are slated to support the 4K resolution stream. None of these services are free, either, but free trials are available.</p><p>That leaves the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/category/apple-tv-4k">Apple TV 4K</a> and <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/category/amazon-fire-tv-4k">Amazon's Fire TV 4K</a> media streaming platforms as the only places to watch the Super Bowl in sharp, clear 4K resolution for free.</p><p>Outside of media streaming over the internet, the game will also broadcast in 4K by certain cable providers, including Altice Optimum, DirecTV, Dish, or Verizon Fios, providing you have the right cable TV packages and set-top boxes.</p><p>The game will be available to stream in standard HD resolution from the Fox Sports app on a wider variety of streaming devices, including those from Amazon, Apple, Android TV, Xbox One, Samsung's smart TVs (models from 2017 or newer), smartphones and tablets, and web browsers on computers. </p><p>Roku hasn't responded to Business Insider's request for more information or additional comments beyond the tweet.</p><p>"Roku's threat to delete FOX apps from its customers' devices is a naked effort to use its customers as pawns," a Fox spokesperson told Business Insider in a statement. "To be clear, FOX has not asked Roku to remove our apps, and we would prefer Roku continue to make them available without interruption. Roku's tactics are a poorly timed negotiating ploy, fabricating a crisis with no thought for the alarm it generated among its own customers. Even if Roku unilaterally decides to remove FOX apps, savvy Roku customers know Super Bowl LIV on FOX will be ubiquitously available through streaming providers, FOX apps on the biggest streaming platforms and our website. <ul><li><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div><strong>Google and Apple are making big bets on augmented reality apps for smartphones.</strong></li><li><strong>AR will soon be accessible to tens of millions of people.</strong></li><li><strong>But the technology is likely to remain niche until AR can be used in other gadgets, like fashionable computerized glasses.</strong></li></ul><p>In the 10 years since the modern smartphone era began, the same question has been on everyone's mind: "What's next?"</p><p>The smartphone hasn't even reached maturity, but everyone seems obsessed with killing it off in favor of something new.</p><p>For awhile, it was thought to be wearables, with smartwatches finally helping us break our smartphone addiction. That one didn't shake out. And with the exception of the Apple Watch, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/what-happened-to-smartwatches-2017-8">smartwatches are mostly toast</a>.</p><p>Today, it's augmented reality (AR) that has the tech world hyperventilating. This is the concept that puts digital images on top of the real world. If you've ever played Pokémon GO or made a video with Snapchat's dancing hot dog, then you've experienced AR.</p><p>But a lot of companies think it can go further than that. From Facebook to Apple to Google to startups like Magic Leap, there are more and more ideas about how AR could not only replace the smartphone, but every other screen we use.</p><p>Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg summed up that theory pretty well <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2017/04/18/technology/mark-zuckerberg-sees-augmented-reality-ecosystem-in-facebook.html">in an April interview with The New York Times</a>: "Think about how many of the things around us don't actually need to be physical," he said. "Instead of a $500 TV sitting in front of us, what's to keep us from one day having it be a $1 app?"</p><p>That vision won't shake out for another several years, when technology has caught up to the point where people can wear computerized glasses all day without looking like goofballs. In the meantime, the technology that may end up killing the smartphone is finding a new life on those very same devices. You're going to see an explosion of new AR apps this fall on your smartphone, but it's not going to be the revolution promised by Zuckerberg, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/tim-cook-on-augmented-reality-a-big-idea-like-the-smartphone-2017-2">Apple CEO Tim Cook</a>, and others.</p><p></p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div>In a few weeks, Apple will release iOS 11, the new version of the iPhone and iPad operating system. The key feature: ARKit, which includes new tools that make it easy for developers to add AR to their apps. Before ARKit came along, developers needed a lot of resources to make AR work well on the iPhone. That was fine for the Snapchats and Facebooks of the world that have truckloads of money and armies of engineers, but not for the smaller shops that make the majority of the apps you find in the App Store.<p>Now, anyone can bring AR to life on iOS. When iOS 11 launches, tens of millions of iPhones and iPads will suddenly be AR-ready, making iOS the largest AR platform in the world overnight.</p><p>Apple isn't alone. On Tuesday, Google announced its own AR developer tool for Android called ARCore, which will only work with a few Android phones at first as developers build out their apps. Google plans to enable AR on about 100 million Android devices by the end of the year, and just about every new Android phone will be AR-ready out of the box by this time next year.</p><p>There's already a hunger to start experimenting. Since Apple released ARKit to developers in June, we've seen a wide variety of clever AR apps. The other day, I tried Ikea's new shopping app for&#xa0;iOS 11 that lets you digitally place a piece of furniture you might want to buy in your home to see if it fits. No more tape measures or guessing. You can literally see what that couch will look like in your living room before you click the buy button.</p><p>Then there are other experiments, like virtual tape measures and <a href="https://twitter.com/madewithARKit/status/880815805281300480">this cool "portal" concept</a> that lets your walk through a doorway into a virtual world.&#xa0;(You can follow the Twitter account <a href="https://twitter.com/madewithARKit">@madewithARKit</a> for even more great examples in the works for iOS 11.) I'm sure Apple will have some other cool&#xa0;third-party AR apps to demo during the iPhone 8 event in a few weeks.</p><p>AR isn't new to Android phones though. I've also been playing around with an Android phone that's powered by Google's Tango AR platform, which uses advanced sensors to scan your surroundings and create even more detailed environments than what you see with devices that just rely on the camera. But since Tango requires specialized hardware, the app selection is pretty pitiful, and most of it feels experimental. ARCore and ARKit will entice developers to get finally get creative and release their apps on a massive&#xa0;scale.</p><p>"I think phones are the most widely distributed computer there is," Google's director of product for AR&#xa0;Nikhil Chandhok told me in an interview this week. "There are 3 to 5 billion phones in the world. There are market forces at work. Everyone is going to push on that access to innovation to get more out of the phone. AR is one manifestation."</p><p>But so far, AR on the phone feels niche. It's great for goofy stuff like gaming and some practical tasks like shopping, but the limitations of the smartphone keeps the technology from being as disruptive as many have predicted. You'll still be using "normal" apps for just about everything for the foreseeable future.</p><p>We're in the experimental phase for AR. People I've spoken to at Apple and Google don't even know how it'll play out. They figure they can release the tools developers need to make AR apps on the phone, and eventually someone will stumble onto something amazing. Maybe the next Instagram. Maybe the next Minecraft. Maybe nothing.</p><p>Chandhok&#xa0;was bullish on the prospects of AR, saying it could enhance a lot of things we already do on the smartphone, like shopping, gaming, and even search. (This is Google, after all.)</p><p>"So far, AR has only been talked about in the context of Snapchat... essentially toys," he said. "Very soon it can become very obvious for high-value scenarios, things people do every day that can be made better with AR."</p><p>Apple and Google's AR push is a&#xa0;good first step, and lays the foundation for a few years from now when AR headsets no longer look like something out of a bad sci-fi movie.
