One can, therefore, assume that it would be the same for other industries as well. Which raises questions like: If so many women are entering the workforce, why are they not reaching the top? Or some harsh questions such as: Do they get settled pretty soon and lose focus on career growth? Do they have enough professional backbone to stand up to their families to make the right professional choices? Some of these harsh questions will need a more significant movement to be able to find a solution. In the meantime, let’s focus on where companies go wrong and what can they do to facilitate more women leadership. 1. Organizations suffer from a “CLUSTERING ILLUSION” Hiring/ promotion process erroneously over-estimates the knowledge of the past patterns and base their decisions on them, e.g. A large number of women have to leave early from work because they have to maintain a work-life balance or, quite a few women can’t travel for a longer time for projects after marriage. Hence, the management presume the same for all women and prefer not to waste their time. A lot of women lose opportunities because of this pre-decided mindset. We as leaders need to ask more fundamental questions such as, why do we need more than 8-9 hours of work in a day? Do men not need a work-life balance? Are people spending unproductive working hours during the day, so they can show they are working hard by sitting late? Also, there would be some women who refuse to take on certain responsibilities depending on their family situation. Managers should motivate them to look at the larger picture and lay out what they would be missing if they let these opportunities go. Still, if they can’t, they shouldn’t generalise the situation and hold this against other women by not presenting such opportunities to the deserving ones. 2. Male leadership suffers from “SOCIAL PROMOTION SYNDROME” Most promotions at higher level happen at the back of the mind in social scenarios/ casual drinks, and women take a big hit in this department. In a lot of male-dominated organisations, men use casual abusive language as a part of the daily conversations. Female presence, for them, means they need to be careful in their choice of words and that makes them uncomfortable. So, if they have to choose between two equally competent man or woman, the obvious choice becomes a male. Also, after work get together or casual conversations, which most women end up not going to for several reasons becomes a roadblock for them coming in the consideration set for promotions. 3. “OVER-SOFTENED ATTITUDE” towards women reinforces gender biases How many times when we think about working women, their issues, we think of the below: <ol><li>Flexible working hours</li><li>Work from home when required</li><li>Setting different outcome standards for men and women</li></ol>This special treatment can be counterproductive. It reinforces capabilities and commitment gaps between the genders. If a company is productivity-focused, it can extend these benefits to men as well. If the rule sets for both genders are different, the outcomes and promotions will automatically be different. All these opinions and views are a combination of thoughts collated from a lot of strong women at Fractal Ink. Women, who believe that nothing or no one can come in the way of their achieving excellence. I am proud and honoured to be associated with them and learning new things every day. A little-noticed and lesser-discussed issue that afflicts us as a gender, and what I believe is almost all-pervasive is – how centuries of patriarchy have affected us, women, at a subliminal level. Generations of women have been told explicitly and implicitly that they come second to men, that thinking about themselves, their happiness, is not the mark of an ideal woman, so much that these beliefs now seem to be genetically encoded in us! It amounts to the fact that women don’t inherently believe that they deserve everything that a man does; and if they don’t have that deep-rooted belief, how can they aim for the same levels of recognition and success as their male counterparts? It is enraging to hear a bright young member of my team, who has the intelligence and talent to grow into a leader, say that her family does not like women to work. She says that she used to be very ambitious before she got married but has had to dial back her dreams to suit her family’s ideals of what their daughter-in-law should be. She is thankful to be ‘allowed’ to work and is now clearly punching below her weight. What is sad is that she seems to see nothing very wrong in the situation. Over the years, I have come across a number of instances, where female members of my team say that they put in a full day’s work in the office and then go home to cook and clean – by themselves and with no help from other family members. It does not occur to them to expect equal contribution to household chores from their husbands. These girls are resigned to the situation and what is worse, believe that this is the way it has to be. One of the worst instances of the lack of self-worth I have come across in recent times is a conversation I had with a pretty senior member of my team. She was deeply appreciative of her in-laws which is quite the change from the norm. But what she was appreciative of, was shocking to me. She has a number of health issues and was thankful that her in-laws are not abusive because of these afflictions. How is someone who comes across as very mature and is great at handling client crises, not able to see that she deserves love and care in this situation and should not be happy by the lack of abuse? These are a very small representation of the ways in which patriarchy has affected the belief system of women and gives one perspective to why there are not enough women in the board room. Why do girls value themselves so little? Why do they not stop to think that they deserve better? While organizations invest heavily in training <keyword id="22923" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="women-leaders">women leaders</keyword>, who already know how to fight and win battles, I wonder why is there no conversation about teaching young school-going girls that they can put themselves first sometimes? From trippy dorm room posters to the special effects in the blockbuster film "Doctor Strange," the endlessly recursive designs have become a cultural shorthand for awe and wonder.<a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fractal">Fractals</a> are mathematical curves that are made up of ever smaller copies of themselves, so that zooming in on one part of the curve results in a very similar shape to the whole.Many fractals, like the <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mandelbrot_set">Mandelbrot set</a> above, come from intricate mathematical equations. But some are much simpler and easier to construct.One straightforward but still fascinating fractal is the <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Koch_snowflake">Koch snowflake</a>. To build your own, start with a straight line. Then, add a triangular point in the middle of that line. Take that shape and do the same thing with each of the four smaller line segments, adding a triangular point to each. This process then gets repeated over and over again:<div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image">Business Insider/Andy Kiersz</div></div></div>The final curve is the result of doing this process an infinite number of times. Zooming in on any part of the snowflake gives a smaller version of the overall figure.Fractals like the Koch snowflake have lots of weird mathematical properties. For example, each iteration above has a greater total length than the previous step. By replacing each line segment in the figure with four sections, the overall length of the curve keeps increasing. Crystals show the kind of repeating "self-similarity" that the Koch snowflake does; tree branches grow out into smaller and smaller versions of themselves; and lightning bolts follow fractal-like paths through the air.But, as with many things in math, one of the earliest foundational studies of what would be later described as fractals came from a surprisingly difficult question: How long is the coastline of Great Britain?While most people wouldn't lose sleep over this puzzle, it's the exact sort of problem that interests mathematicians - particularly when the answer turns out more complicated than expected.It turns out that measuring the length of a coastline depends on the length of the ruler you're using, or the resolution of the map or photo being measured. That is somewhat counterintuitive, since most distances we might measure day to day don't change with the length of the ruler used to find them.Coastlines can have large amounts of bends and kinks and odd edges, and so a smaller ruler or scale being used can measure a longer overall length of a coastline than a longer ruler, as the smaller ruler can capture more of those weird twists and turns.As an example, here's a measurement of the coast of Great Britain using two different scales: one with a ruler about 100 miles long, and another using a second ruler half that length.<div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image">Business Insider/Andy Kiersz</div></div></div>As your ruler gets smaller and smaller, the measured length of the coastline just keeps getting longer and longer. In a <a href="http://li.mit.edu/Stuff/CNSE/Paper/Mandelbrot67Science.pdf">seminal 1967 paper</a>, mathematician Benoit Mandelbrot explored the relationship between changing the length of a ruler and the measured length of a coastline. Mandelbrot built off of earlier research by the mathematician Lewis Fry Richardson, who first observed the phenomenon of border measurements getting increasingly large as the unit of measurement got smaller.Mandelbrot argued that the key reason for the increasing measured lengths with smaller rulers is that coastlines have a property he called "self-similarity." Roughly speaking, self-similarity means that zooming in on one part of a curve results in an area that looks somewhat similar to the larger part of the curve. Self-similar shapes are made up of smaller shapes that look like the larger shape.Coastlines (like the British coast pictured above), tend to be very crinkly, with lots of zig-zagging areas and odd ins and outs. But zooming in closer, one sees a similar degree of crinkliness.That self-similarity is the essential feature of what Mandelbrot would later name fractals.Coastlines, of course, are not true fractals. While the self-similarity of a coastline extends pretty far, at the end of the day, coastlines are made up of atoms, and so the infinite levels of recursion that are possible in mathematical abstractions like the Koch snowflake are impossible with actual physical objects.Some of the most interesting developments in math come out of the interplay between abstract concepts and actual physical things that exist in the real world. People are seeking more warmth, comfort, and personality in their homes," Smith said.<h2>Fast furniture is falling out of favor for many</h2>Flat-packed, cheap furniture that's mass-produced has been popular for years due to its convenient and budget-friendly nature, but Smith told Insider the fast furniture <a target="_blank" href="https://www.insider.com/kitchen-trends-out-of-style-this-year-interior-designers-2023">trend is disappearing</a>."There's a growing awareness of sustainability and the environmental impact of disposable items. <ul class="summary-list"><li>Barrie Miskin is a teacher and writer living in Queens, New York.</li><li>This is an excerpt from her memoir, "Hell Gate Bridge," which is her first book.</li></ul>Seven hundred and fifty dollars out of pocket is on the cheaper end for a consultation with a "repro psych," and waiting lists can be months long. When we had asked our OB-GYN for a referral for a <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/finding-therapy-when-youre-black-pregnant-and-depressed-2021-3">reproductive psychiatrist</a> early on in the pregnancy, he gave us the number for a physician who prescribed nutritional supplements and a grain-free diet plan with no nightshade vegetables — and no medication. She cost $1,500 per session.Reproductive psychiatrists are wealthy, well-educated white women. If you are lucky enough to pay the entrance fee into their exclusive club, you are probably a wealthy, well-educated white woman, too.<h2 id="85ff03a2-6c9c-47f9-aa4b-a638ddbe3be5">I tried to find a reproductive psychiatrist I could afford</h2>As mandated, I went to see the reproductive psychiatrist assigned to me by the social worker a few days after I had returned from the hospital. I took the subway to her hushed penthouse office suite on the Upper East Side. It was a January day when the city was all gray and stone, the tall buildings leaning in on me. I'd <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/new-york-city-life-disappointing-photos-2023-3">lived in New York City</a> for nearly 20 years — it belonged to me. But that afternoon, I felt small and lost in the city's cold maze.The doctor had the brusque demeanor unique to chic New York women who are used to getting what they want. Even so, she was sympathetic, and I could sense that beneath her all-business exterior, she was a little afraid for me. I repeated my story, now with the addition of my brief institutionalization.My daughter's due date was on April 6, 2017 — the day after my birthday. I had 13 weeks to find a way to reverse the course of my insanity and get ready to be a mother. The doctor understood our urgency. She also understood that I would not be able to afford her. That afternoon, she spent most of our 45-minute meeting on the phone with other psychiatrists in her network, fast-talking in a broad, Long Island accent, like she was a day trader and I was a stock to sell. No luck.No one would take me for under $500 per session. As our time together came to a close, she did promise to keep trying to find me help. She would put my case on a message board where psychiatrists throughout the city could read about the undiagnosable pregnant woman who was too poor to afford their treatment and bid on me online instead.Before I left her office, I told her I <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/guides/health/conditions-symptoms/what-is-insomnia">still wasn't sleeping</a>. It had now been almost a month and a half, and the most I had slept was three hours per night — and that had happened only once."OK." She leaned in closer. "I'm going to prescribe you something that is gonna Knock. You. Out," she said in the manner of someone offering up a line in the bathroom of a Downtown loft party. "You'll be sleeping like a baby in no time."I left the appointment with no psychiatrist to treat me, still no real diagnosis, but I did have a new prescription for 50 milligrams of Seroquel. An antipsychotic. And knock me out, it did. The next morning, Patrick had to lightly slap my face several times so I could wake up, get out of bed, and go to work.<h2 id="ab4b064e-7ddc-4d26-bf6b-0f18912cc502">The antidepressants didn't work, and I kept searching for answers</h2>I don't believe in God, but I prayed like an earnest schoolgirl for what Dr. Abrams had told me in our therapy session to be true: that in three weeks' time, the medicine would kick in, and I would be feeling back to normal. At the three-week mark, though, I was worse than ever. If the Zoloft wasn't working, then I probably <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/guides/health/mental-health/what-is-depression">wasn't depressed</a>. If the Seroquel only seemed to help me sleep, then I probably wasn't psychotic. What was wrong with me?I searched for pregnant women who have been treated in psychiatric hospitals (a few), pregnant women who have experienced suicidal ideation (more than a few), and reviews of psych wards (many — there are a number of sites heralding themselves as "A Yelp for Psychiatric Facilities," as well as several actual Yelp reviews of psychiatric facilities). Most reviews begin with the patient's often grotesque mistreatment by ward staff and end with how much more traumatized and unwell they felt when they were released.My greatest fear was that I was hurting the baby, through my stress, through the medications I was taking. When you are pregnant, the internet is not your friend, even if you are in the soundest state of mind. My OB/GYN constantly implored me to stop self-diagnosing, saying that if I wanted to find research articles that stated, "Apples cause autism in unborn children," they existed. I couldn't stop though: Each day, I went deeper down the hole, reopening the wound.My searches kept landing on a disorder I had never heard of before: depersonalization-<a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/bo-burnham-inside-derealization-meaning-that-funny-feeling-2021-6">derealization</a> disorder. And I kept finding my truth. The feeling that you're observing yourself from outside your body or you have a sense that things around you aren't real, or both… you may feel like you're living in a dream . . . alienated from or unfamiliar with your surroundings... feeling emotionally disconnected from people you care about, as if you were separated by a glass wall… surroundings appear distorted, blurry, colorless, two-dimensional or artificial… distortions in perception of time… distortions of distance and the size and shape of objects.Scrolling down the pages for the treatment plan, my heart pounded with longing, but I was always met with the same death knell: There are no medications specifically approved to treat depersonalization-derealization disorder. Contact your primary care provider.Unable to help myself, though, I dug deeper. Peeking through my fingers like a child watching a horror movie, I sifted through articles, Facebook groups, threads on Reddit, books on Amazon.The books had titles like "Stranger to Myself" or "Feeling Unreal." On their covers were pictures of crying clowns, black tears dripping down painted-white faces. The Facebook group greeted visitors with a blown-up picture of Edvard Munch's The Scream as its cover photo.Images posted at the tops of articles showed young men and women trapped inside hallucinatory fractal designs, like darker versions of a poster you might find on a college dorm room wall.I learned that DPDR was a dissociative disorder. The only dissociative disorder I had ever heard of was <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/dissociative-identity-disorder-signs-amnesia-multiple-voices-disconnect-brain-body-2022-4">dissociative identity disorder</a>, more commonly known as multiple personality disorder. I knew that once you had a dissociative disorder, there was no coming back.I compared the sites on dissociative disorders with the pages and pages of peripartum and postpartum mood disorders. The pictures I saw there were of pretty, long-haired women wearing yoga clothes and dejected faces as they cradled plump babies. There were lists of medications, support groups, doctors, promises that things would get better. Please, I thought, please let that be me.But the world of dissociative disorders continued to reach out its long, sharp-nailed and crooked finger, beckoning me to come and join them where I really belonged."Please, God, no," I silently begged. Many of them will be traveling to stay with friends or family, but some, like me, will be heading to short-term rentals. I'll be staying in an Airbnb in upstate New York with friends. Demand for short-term rentals on platforms like Airbnb and Vrbo <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-much-airbnb-hosts-earn-in-a-year-revenue-income-2022-3">surged coming out of the pandemic</a> and has continued to increase into this year. One analytics site forecast a 10% increase in nights booked on these platforms for the year. But with many more listings available, the increased supply has more than offset the pickup in demand. That's left hosts having to hustle, dropping prices and worrying about whether last-minute guests will come through. The slowdown is particularly pronounced for hosts with properties in the "meh middle" of listings. While luxe rentals with hot tubs and firepits book months in advance and cheap and cheerful locations attract budget-conscious travelers, the properties in between are getting squeezed.<a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/airbnb-listings-summer-mediocre-middle-2023-7">The Airbnb hosts getting squeezed</a><h2>Real-estate reshape</h2><div type="image" title="real estate" height="3640" width="4860" msid="101436014" hostid="261" sizebytes="2172204"></div>The real-estate industry is facing an existential threat. Two class-action lawsuits say home sellers are getting bilked out of billions of dollars every year through a circuitous method of paying real-estate agents. If the plaintiffs succeed, the rules about how agents get paid could be rewritten. It could result in increased competition among agents, dramatically lower commissions, and as much as $30 billion a year in savings for consumers. <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/real-estate-agents-lawsuits-buy-sell-homes-forever-housing-market-2023-6">Homebuying as we know it could change</a>. <h2>Workforce 'Uberization'</h2><div type="image" title="An Uber Eats bicyclist" height="1333" width="2000" msid="101436016" hostid="261" sizebytes="62814"></div>Workers aren't the only ones <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/quiet-quitting-job-limits-companies-manager-employee-unpaid-work-2022-8">quiet quitting</a>. In the age of remote work, employers are doing it, too. After the pandemic showed that staff were capable of doing their jobs from home, some employers are now hunting for the cheapest remote workers possible. They're stocking up on part-time employees, temps, independent contractors, and outsourced positions both at home and abroad. A professor at Stanford University described it as the "Uberization of the workforce."
