<ul><li>A day after its parent <keyword id="3521910" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="fosun-pharma" source="Orion">Fosun Pharma</keyword> said it was looking to sell its controlling stake in <keyword id="6444828" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="gland-pharma" source="Orion">Gland Pharma</keyword>, the company has announced its plan to acquire Europe’s Cenexi. </li><li>Acquisition to make Gland Pharma among the largest contract development and manufacturing companies. </li><li>Deal to be funded by internal accruals. Cenexi has presence across four manufacturing sites in Europe which include three sites in France and one site in Belgium. </li></ul>Gland Pharma Limited, a generic injectable focused contract development and manufacturing company, on Wednesday announced that it would acquire Cenexi Group through its wholly owned subsidiary Gland Pharma International PTE, Singapore. Gland’s subsidiary has entered into a put option agreement to acquire 100% of Cenexi Group for an equity value not exceeding €120 mn. The enterprise value of the same stands at €230 mn. The acquisition will be funded through internal accruals. Commenting on the deal, Srinivas Sadu, Managing Director and CEO of Gland Pharma, said during an analyst call earlier in the day: “Thanks to this deal, Gland would become one of the largest players in the CDMO space. This acquisition will not only help expand footprint but also accelerate product portfolio in the European market. The company (Cenexi) has a good manufacturing presence in Europe where Gland Pharma can release some of our own products. All manufacturing sites approved by FDA.” Founded in 2004, Cenexi, along with its subsidiaries, is engaged primarily in the business of contract development and manufacturing organization (CDMO) of pharmaceutical products with expertise in sterile liquid and lyophilized fully finished drugs, including capabilities on oncology and complex products. It has presence across four manufacturing sites in Europe which include three sites in France and one site in Belgium. It has experience in processing specific substances like hormones, suspensions and controlled substances. It has an employee strength of 1,372 including 1,252 employees across 4 manufacturing sites and 120 employees for services. Its revenue for CY21 stood at €184.1 million. Gland Pharma has a strategic focus on expanding its CDMO offerings in the European market and has been looking to build a manufacturing presence in the market. The acquisition provides Gland Pharma access to leading know-how and development capabilities in sterile forms including for ophthalmic gel, needleless injectors and hormones. Gland Pharma’s ability to support future investments in expanding manufacturing footprint will help build Cenexi as a major CDMO player in the European market. Gland and Cenexi can leverage their long- standing customer relationships to generate synergistic benefits for both entities along with helping Gland enter the branded CDMO space. According to Sadu, the proposed acquisition would be Gland Pharma’s first international acquisition, and it would support the company’s goal of deepening access into the European markets. This acquisition would help expand our global presence and further solidify Gland’s identity as an injectable focused CDMO company. He said: “Together, we see exciting synergy opportunities from leveraging our combined sterile expertise and development capabilities to expand our customer base and increase share of wallet. The acquisition will not only act as a sustainable lever for long term growth but would also establish a leading European platform to enrich our offering and increase value add to customers.” Cenexi is currently owned by a private equity investor, after the promoters sold out. Commenting on the proposed acquisition, Christophe Durand, CEO, Cenexi said: “We view the combination of Cenexi with Gland Pharma, as a natural partnership which would both, support our long-term strategy of becoming a top European sterile player and help us drive the next phase of growth and international expansion for Cenexi.” The proposed acquisition is subject to receipt of necessary regulatory approvals and satisfaction of certain conditions. Chinese-firm backed Gland Pharma files for IPO, could raise up to ₹6,000 crore

Hong Kong suspended use of the <keyword id="44612" type="DOMAIN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Pfizer">Pfizer</keyword> <keyword id="24209" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="vaccine">vaccine</keyword> Wednesday after its Chinese distributor informed the city that one batch had defective bottle lids. The city's government said the suspension was immediate while the matter is investigated by distributor Fosun Pharma and <keyword id="3124139" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="BioNTech">BioNTech</keyword>, the German company that created the vaccine with American pharmaceutical firm Pfizer. BioNTech and Fosun Pharma have not found any reason to believe the product is unsafe, according to the statement. However, vaccinations will be halted as a preventive and safety measure. The defective lids were found on vaccines from <keyword id="6339212" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="batch-number">batch number</keyword> 210102. A separate batch of vaccines, 210104, will also be not be administered. The semi-autonomous territory of Macao also said Wednesday that its residents will not receive the <keyword id="10466425" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="pfizer-shots">Pfizer shots</keyword> from the same batch. The vaccines from the batch comprise a total of 585,000 doses, with the other batch number 210104 holding 758,000 doses, according to Hong Kong's Director of Health Constance Chan. Although about 150,000 doses from the batch 210102 have been administered in the city so far, officials said during a press briefing Wednesday that the vaccines were safe to use despite the packaging defects, and that suspending the vaccination was a precautionary measure. Batch number 210104 remains in the warehouse and has not been used. Chan said that there were over 40 instances when medical personnel found defective packaging, such as cracks on the vaccine bottles or leakages when the vaccine was diluted with saline before being administered. None of these vaccines was given to residents and they were thrown away, officials said. "Fosun has promised to carry out an immediate investigation so they are going to approach the manufacturer in <keyword id="87" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Germany">Germany</keyword> to look into their plant," Chan said. "When the vaccines arrive in Hong Kong, they will have a review of the whole logistics chain to see if that's the cause of the current situation." She said that officials are urging manufacturers to give a report as soon as possible to check if the batches of vaccines in Hong Kong can be used, otherwise the manufacturers will have to deliver another batch of shots as soon as possible. Residents who are slated to receive their second Pfizer dose starting on Saturday should get the second shot administered as soon as possible, if new vaccines arrive in Hong Kong after the recommended 19- to 42-day window following the first dose. BioNTech could not be immediately reached for comment. Fosun Pharma said in a filing to the Hong Kong stock exchange that it received notice from BioNTech regarding the packaging defects on Tuesday night and informed Hong Kong and Macao authorities on Wednesday to temporarily suspend the vaccines. The suspension of the Pfizer jab means the only vaccine currently offered to residents is China's Sinovac. The two vaccines are the only ones that were offered to residents in Hong Kong. German expatriate Jannis Partsafas was among a group of people who received the Pfizer shot ahead of the suspension. "I got vaccinated this morning at 8.30 a.m. before the news went public about the vaccine suspension, and heard the news when I was on my way home," said 32-year-old Partsafas, who works in the sporting goods industry. "I'm not very concerned about the safety, but I am worried that this may mean more people will turn down the option of getting vaccinated in Hong Kong which would impact herd immunity and the lifting of social-distancing measures," he said. Some residents who had appointments to receive the Pfizer shots stood in line outside a community center in the city's Sai Ying Pun neighborhood at about 10.30 a.m. They eventually left when it became clear the vaccines would not be administered. As of 8 p.m. Tuesday, 403,000 people have received vaccines in the city, of which 150,200 had received the first dose of the Pfizer vaccine, compared with 252,800 who had taken the Sinovac jab. Hong Kong halts use of Pfizer vaccine after its Chinese distributor informed the authorities of defective bottle lids

San Francisco, July 3 (IANS) Tesla is helping German vaccine maker CureVac build portable molecular RNA printers to help produce quick doses of vaccine maker's Covid-19 candidate. CureVac's printers are designed to quickly create mRNA vaccine candidates against known pathogens. "Tesla, as a side project, is building RNA microfactories for CureVac &amp; possibly others," Tesla CEO Elon Musk tweeted on Thursday. "In principle, I think synthetic RNA (and DNA) has amazing potential. This basically makes the solution to many diseases a software problem," he added. Pharmaceutical companies like CureVac are working to create a Covid-19 vaccine using "messenger RNA," which can be manually inserted into cells to initiate an immune response. CureVac says its mRNA vaccine candidates direct cells to make proteins or antigens against various diseases. CureVac's vaccine candidate called 'CVnCoV' received German and Belgian regulatory clearance to enter phase 1 human testing last month. Other companies making RNA vaccines include Moderna and Pfizer and BioNTech. According to Forbes, Moderna is looking to start phase 3 trials by July for its vaccine candidate named mRNA-1273. New Delhi, Dec 17 (IANS) China has been projecting itself as the front-runner in the Covid vaccine race but has now gone in for a deal to buy the Pfizer BioNtech vaccine from Germany for its own use which shows that the dragon is not as confident in its home-made product as it would have others believe. Beijing had launched aggressive vaccine diplomacy to woo ASEAN, Brazil and Mexico as part of its campaign to increase its influence worldwide. However, countries in the ASEAN bloc have turned away from the offer and signed deals for the Pfizer vaccine instead since there is no transparency in the development of the Chinese vaccine as is the case with much else in the country. ASEAN members Thailand, the Philippines and Malaysia have finalised deals for procuring COVID-19 vaccines from US pharma giant Pfizer and Britain's AstraZeneca which also has a collaboration with Pune-based Serum Institute of India. Brazil and Taiwan have also raised questions over the Chinese vaccine candidates. The fact that China is now sourcing 100 million doses of the Covid-19 vaccine from German company BioNtech for its own use only goes to strengthen the doubts of these countries over the Chinese vaccine candidates. Shanghai Fosun Pharmaceutical Group of China said on Wednesday that its subsidiary has entered into an agreement with the German firm aimed at ensuring "an adequate supply" of vaccines in China. The company will make an initial payment $152 million this month for 50 million doses while another $152 million would be paid after receiving authorisation to commercialise the German vaccine in mainland China. China's vaccine has also been questioned in Brazil where it is undergoing trials. Brazilian health regulator Anvisa had said on Monday that the Chinese health authorities had not been transparent about their experimental Covid-19 vaccines, one of which is currently being tested in Sao Paulo. The health regulator pointed out that while the vaccine has had an emergency use authorization in China since June, the country's authorities have not been transparent about the criteria used for granting this authorization. Doubts over the Chinese vaccine were earlier raised when Taiwan made it very clear that it would not buy COVID vaccines manufactured by mainland companies due to safety and regulatory concerns. According to reports in Taiwanese media, Chen Shih-Chung, head of the Central Epidemic Command Center, said the reasons for the decision include the questionable quality of Chinese vaccines and production processes, which have both been a source of safety concerns. He had denied allegations that Taiwan was putting ideology before public health by not seeking Chinese vaccines. Chou Jih-haw, who sits on Taiwan's coronavirus task force, added that China is infamous for its inoculation history of flawed vaccine management and administration. Scandals have surfaced in China over the years, including over the use of expired polio vaccines in 2019, which led to adverse effects, and hepatitis B vaccines associated with a string of deaths in 2013. Communist China has been divulging very little about its vaccine development programme to the outside world. Even without final approval, more than 1 million healthcare workers and others who are seen as facing a high risk of infection in China have received experimental vaccines under emergency use permission. But the developer has yet to disclose how effective their vaccines are and the possible side effects that they may have. Health experts also question why China is using experimental vaccines on such a vast scale now that the coronavirus outbreak is largely under control in the country. Pfizer and BioNTech's mRNA vaccine has already been approved for emergency use in countries such as the US, the UK and Singapore. The vaccine uses cutting-edge technology to create synthetic versions of coronavirus molecules called messenger RNA which when injected in the human body trigger immune reactions to the virus. "As many as 30 years of painstaking research has gone into mRNA vaccine technology which is now being brought to the threshold of actually working for the first time. China thrives on copycat technology and would also be looking at reverse-engineering the vaccine," a senior AIIMS doctor told Indianarrative.com. The ultrasound-on-a-chip is the invention of Butterfly Network, founded by Jonathan Rothberg, who also had a hand in creating <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2011/01/05/health/05gene.html">Next Generation DNA-sequencing,</a> which made the then-exclusive DNA sequencing technology a standard part of most medical practices and clinics.The new device, named Butterfly iQ, was inspired by Rothberg's own personal experiences. His daughter was born with a disease called tubular sclerosis, which creates tiny tumors all over the body. The treatment procedure for this requires the use of a high-frequency ultrasound and MRI-imaging. Through this ordeal, Rothberg became frustrated with the limited amount of ultrasound machines available in a hospital and the hassle of waiting for hours for a machine to become available. Rothberg wanted to democratize the access to these machines, which can cost up to $70,000 on average. By sizing the machine down and making it more versatile, Butterfly Network hopes to enable a wider range of doctors and healthcare workers to make more precise diagnoses out in the field, at in-office checkups, and in emergency rooms and ambulances. On Thursday, the company announced that it has raised $250 million in a series D fundraising round and is expecting to ship out starting this week, with investments from Fidelity, Fosun Pharma, and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.It was only a year ago that the Butterfly device was <a href="https://www.butterflynetwork.com/press-releases/first-ultrasound-on-a-chip-receives-broadest-fda-510-k-clearance">first unveiled</a> at an American College of Emergency Physicians conference. Now, it's gearing up to ship out its product to key industry leaders, institutions, and private healthcare providers.  <keyword id="433564" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Chinese-companies">Chinese companies</keyword> are already planning to invest around $32 billion in India, therefore nearly half the flows that the indian government is looking at are from China. This is also expected to slow down the massive flow of imports from the neighbouring country. 
 
One of the companies, the one that is on top of India’s list is Sany, with a possible investment of nearly $10 billion in the wind power space. Other than that, there are real estate and construction companies like Dalian Wanda Group, SAIC, Lifan Motors and Fosun Pharma.
