Now, La-Z-Boy has a written policy that outlines its commitments and suppliers.To help consumers and trade professionals identify which companies are doing a good job with sustainability, the SFC does score its members as gold, silver, or simply a member and publish that information on its website. But while there's a place for setting standards and determining whether or not companies meet them, there's also a critical role for groups that facilitate learning, partnerships, and the efforts of those who want to do better. "If we tried to be a certifying body, we couldn't have the impact we do," Inglis said.<h2>Internal and external partnerships are vital</h2>Partnerships have always been important to La-Z-Boy's sustainability efforts. When it was looking to lower electricity and water consumption, it worked closely with its local utility for resources and ideas. To look at greenhouse gas emissions created by external organizations within its value chain, La-Z-Boy is partnering with <a href="https://www.spglobal.com/esg/trucost">S&amp;P Global Trucost</a>. Partnerships must exist internally, too, for a company to achieve sustainability goals. "We have teams of people from across the enterprise who are involved with our sustainability program simply because it's something they have a passion for," Tim McCurry, La-Z-Boy's senior director of environmental health and safety, said. "These folks have all sorts of jobs working for La-Z-Boy and bring a diversity of perspectives that enrich our program and make suggestions to improve processes that may otherwise go unnoticed." As with most things climate, the calculus can be tricky. Some tree-free toilet paper is made from a byproduct of sugarcane production called bagasse. Shri Ramaswamy, a professor in the department of bioproducts and biosystems engineering at the University of Minnesota, said using the bagasse and preventing it from going to waste was, of course, a good thing. But if producers are slashing forests to grow the sugarcane, that's not a win for the climate."Just because it is nonwood, and they're not cutting trees, it doesn't mean it is sustainable," Ramaswamy said. He added, for example, that it's important to consider how much water goes into the production of a tree alternative to get a better sense of its environmental benefits. Meanwhile, the paper-products industry has continued to boost its overall use of recycled paper and reduce its use of some chemicals, Ramaswamy said.The Natural Resources Defense Council <a href="https://www.nrdc.org/sites/default/files/issue-with-tissue-2-report.pdf">recommends</a> that consumers look for the Forest Stewardship Council's "FSC" label to make sure, for example, that the bamboo used in toilet paper wasn't grown in places that were recently deforested. On Tuesday, the fast-food chain announced that it will make recycling an option at all locations globally by 2025. Currently, roughly 10% of the more than 36,000 McDonald's locations allow people to recycle. The chain is also pledging that by 2025, all packaging on customer products will come from "renewable or recycled sources," or sources certified by environmental organizations Forest Stewardship Council or Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification. Recently, we've noticed that tree-derived fabrics are popping up under names like <a href="https://www.tencel.com/sustainability">TENCEL Lyocell and TENCEL Modal</a>, <a href="http://yulex.com/products/fsc-hevea/">Yulex Pure</a>, and bamboo-derived <a href="https://goodonyou.eco/material-guide-viscose-really-better-environment/">viscose</a> to name a few. These are all just fancy terms for fabrics that are spun from tree fibers. To shoppers like us, it might seem like a no-brainer to use environmentally-friendly alternative fabrics, but for brands, it can be a tricky place. Lyocell, patented by the Austrian company <a href="https://www.tencel.com/">TENCEL</a>, is made by <a href="https://goodonyou.eco/how-ethical-is-tencel/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">taking wood pulp</a> from the bark and leaves of trees, dissolving the pulp in an organic solvent which creates cellulose fibers, and finally weaving it into yarn. Not only does this create a soft breathable fabric, but it goes one step further in gaining a stamp of sustainability. <a href="https://www.tencel.com/sustainability">TENCEL</a> uses wood from natural forests and sustainably managed plantations that are approved by the Forest Stewardship Council. According to Kathrin Hamm, founder and CEO of <a href="http://shareasale.com/r.cfm?b=999&amp;u=1088116&amp;m=84704&amp;afftrack=biip_060319_products-brands-tree-derived-materials&amp;urllink=bearaby.com%2F" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Bearaby</a>, "TENCEL is produced in a responsible closed-loop process, using 10 times less water than regular fabrics." Meaning the water and solvents used during the process are <a href="https://www.tencel.com/sustainability">recycled at a rate of more than 99%</a> which keeps the water we interact with cleaner after production. Patagonia uses another type of tree-fabric called <a href="http://yulex.com/products/fsc-hevea/">Yulex Pure</a> in its rubber wetsuits, which is also <a href="http://yulex.com/about/sustainability-commitment/">FSC Certified</a>. Latex sap is extracted from Hevea trees and processed in a solar-powered factory that refines the material rather than chemically alters it. Made similarly to lyocell, bamboo-derived viscose uses cellulose fibers from pulped bamboo to create yarn. Although it's technically a grass, the structure of bamboo is comparable to that of wood. But using sustainably sourced bamboo is key as it can help eliminate the use of pesticides and chemical fertilizers, and release about <a href="https://open.library.ubc.ca/cIRcle/collections/undergraduateresearch/18861/items/1.0108410">40% more oxygen</a> than trees. The products are good. The esteemed guests discussed the ‘Key success factors for implementing the Extended Producer Responsibility legislation’ and concluded that there is a long way to go for most Indian companies. We realized long ago that there is a need to accord each of these commitments the highest priority; but conversely, we need to balance them as well – because no single commitment can be carried through at the expense of the other. Building a sustainable business involves collaborating with customers, suppliers, governments, NGOs and society. It requires a commitment to continuous innovation, developing technologies and materials that will drive efficiency, cut waste, promote the use of renewable resources and reduce environmental footprint, while continuing to meet the ever-widening needs of the market for packaging that keeps food safe. Recently in Mumbai, over 1600 families in <keyword id="6355459" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="colaba">Colaba</keyword> and Cuffe Parade got four benches made from recycled cartons and installed them at Sagar Upvan, also known as <keyword id="136514" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="mumbai-port-trust">Mumbai Port Trust</keyword> garden. The residents stopped nearly 18,000 cartons from ending up at city’s dumping grounds. This is only one of many such initiatives being run by Tetra Pak, with the help of an execution partner called R U Recycling Greenlife (RUR). According to RUR, around 20% of used cartons sold through Sahakari Bhandar and Reliance Smart and Fresh outlets across Mumbai get deposited by conscious consumers and are recycled into useful products, but the opportunities are immense for other shopper citizens to follow suit. Tetra Pak’s flagship recycling programme, called Go Green, was started in association with Sahakari Bhandar in 2010. With 44 collection centres across the city, Go Green has managed to collect over 20 lakh cartons and recycled them into 250 desks and over 100 garden benches. This initiative is interesting because not only does it promote recycling of packaging materials but it also creates classroom furniture and notebooks out of the recycled material which is then donated to schools for the lesser privileged. Kandarp Singh says, “There is need for a unified approach towards recycling in order to make our cities healthier and more habitable. Being a responsible manufacturer, we have been working ahead of the curve to set up a viable ecosystem to encourage and build awareness around the recycling of our fully-recyclable paper-based cartons. We are very thankful to our partners like Sahakari Bhandar, Reliance Fresh and RUR for their support in. The support that Mumbaikars have extended to us is very encouraging and we are ready to take this mission to the next level over the next few years.” When it comes to sustainability the company is a great example to follow, and their sustainability story does not end at just recycling. The company is a frontrunner when it comes to ethical work practices starting from sourcing till recycling- • RESPONSIBLE SOURCING - Cartons are primarily made from paper which is sourced only from well -managed forests to ensure that none of the endangered forests are affected. The paperboard, which is 75% of the carton, is recycled into useful products and the 25% remaining fraction consisting of the polyethylene and the aluminum can be recycled into panel boards, roof sheets and so on. Globally, sustainability is an important priority for Tetra Pak. Last year, the company launched Tetra Rex, made entirely from plant-based materials and 100 per cent renewable. Other options that Tetra Pak is looking at are biopolymers for caps and more. Another stellar example of the sustainability story is the multi-stakeholder Municipal solid waste management program, ‘Alag Karo Har Din Teen Bin’, in Gurugram which was pivoted by the NGO Saahas starting September 6th. The program is aimed at establishing and sustaining segregation at source and develop capacities of the waste collectors to ensure high recycling rates in Gurugram. “Gurgaon generates 1,000 tonnes of municipal solid waste daily. If source segregation is practised and collection and processing infrastructure is improved, it is possible to reduce the amount of waste being dumped by 85-90%. The MCG has started various projects for source segregation of waste and decentralised waste management,” says Narhari Banger, additional commissioner, MCG. The program aims to reach out to 9000 households; 50 commercial establishments such as Offices and Malls; 50 schools and 500 waste pickers in order to spread awareness about three-way source segregation -dry waste, wet waste and hazardous waste. "We want to sensitise people on proper waste management practices and the value that recyclables like used Tetra Pak cartons can provide to waste dealers and recyclers." says Kandarp Singh. "Our cartons are primarily made from high value paper and are 100% recyclable. We want citizens to be aware of good waste segregation practices and for them to take action in their own homes. We hope the people of Gurgaon see the value of projects like Alag Karo in making our Millennium city cleaner."

With annual revenue of about $120 million and reliable profits, the privately held company operates its famous factory in Pennsylvania, about two hours west of New York City, as well as a plant in Navojoa, Mexico. Its core product is the acoustic guitar, though Martin also manufactures strings, ukuleles, and accessories like straps.While there's considerable variety in Martin's offerings, what the company is really selling is quality, quality, and more quality. There likely isn't a guitarist on earth who hasn't coveted a Martin at some point.Chris Martin credits the founder, Christian Frederick Martin (the first), with establishing the brand's astoundingly durable reputation."We don't know what possessed him to be a guitar builder," Martin said, adding that C. F.'s family might have been happier had he entered the family furniture business and not been seduced by musical instruments.C. F. And while production in Mexico is now politically complicated, Martin has been committed to it since 1989, when it experimented by shifting string production south of the border. But we can't compromise, and that's an ongoing conversation."Martin is a trim, witty man who is constantly seeking to keep the family business relevant, and that requires some innovative thinking. For example, when string production moved to Mexico, string makers in Pennsylvania were confronted with job losses. Martin offered them a deal: Learn to build guitars, and stay with us. Some employees chose to retire, but many took him up on the offer.Martin quality at lower prices has been a boon for the company - and its dealers."They say, 'Thank you for giving me a range of guitars,'" Martin said. "Now we can take you from $500 to your heart's desire, and the dealers like that. And Martin isn't ignoring the opportunity. He knows the company could enjoy robust online guitar sales, if it chose to go that way. But it prefers to work with authorized Martin dealers. (Martin fans can buy accessories, branded clothing, and other modest items via <a href="https://www.martinguitar.com/">the company's website.</a>)"It allows you to use the internet as a tool," Martin said, adding that it's critical for retailers to emulate their physical presence in the digital world.But beyond that, Martin wants customers to put their hands on what they hope to buy, especially if they choose to invest in a limited-edition or custom-made guitar. Chris Martin is a Porsche aficionado - he owns several 911s, the German automaker's iconic sports car - and was inspired by the factory-delivery model. Martin's "Buy from Factory" program enables customers to order a guitar and then visit the factory in Nazareth to collect it, or to select an instrument from the stock on hand.A more pressing challenge for Martin is literally fundamental. Environmental regulations have restricted manufacturers from importing endangered woods, making it difficult for Martin to continue business as usual in an age of climate change and sustainability.But Chris Martin isn't backing away from that one either."We can take the circuitous route to explain why it matters to us - or I can just say that it's purely selfish," he quipped. "If we don't pursue sustainability, I can tell my daughter to sell this thing as fast as you can."Martin has embraced Forest Stewardship Council standards for some of its all-solid-wood guitars, and for other models it's blended solid-wood tops made from abundant Sitka spruce with high-pressure laminated body materials and fretboards made of paper-like materials. A few Martins effectively use no solid woods whatsoever. Again, these guitars sound as good as a Martin should, though for the purists the company has to come up with ways to build all-wood versions of its stalwarts and the reproductions of classics that the vintage-guitar market has created a demand for.Interestingly, Martin's most sustainable guitars are also popular with performing musicians, who appreciate their value, durability, and lack of susceptibility to the temperature and humidity changes that affect all-wood instruments.<h2>Defying the gloom and doom around the guitar business</h2>Matthew DeBord/InsiderPulled into Nazareth.Observers of the guitar market have argued that the instrument's popularity is in terminal decline, an argument bolstered by <a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/graphics/2017/lifestyle/the-slow-secret-death-of-the-electric-guitar/?utm_term=.a7d1a912c3bc">a 2017 Washington Post article</a> that lamented the six-string's twilight. But Chris Martin doesn't buy it."If you look at very commercial music, sometimes it's hard to find a guitar," he said. "But if you go below that, there's lots of guitars."He said that for one of Martin's key customer groups - acoustic-only musicians who play house concerts and small venues - there remains abundant grassroots activity."The electric-guitar companies are more reliant on a superhero," he said.So the Martin proposition is no less appealing now than it was 100 years ago. The business renews itself, thanks to the founder's great-great-great-grandson remaining true to the company's principles."There's always been a fantastic pool of people who've wanted to work here," said the CEO, whose name is on the headstock of every instrument the company makes."The brand has never been as strong as it is today.
