The weather is warm, school is out, serotonin levels are high, and <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/venice-tourism-group-cap-overtourism-2024-8">vacation getaways are jam-packed</a>. So much so that many travelers are now opting instead for a fall respite.A growing number of vacationers have been replacing their summer vacations with ones during <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/what-is-shoulder-season-2017-8#:~:text=Shoulder%20season%20is%20the%20period,in%20Europe%20and%20the%20Caribbean.">shoulder season</a> (the time between high and low travel, such as autumn) — to the extent that luxury travel agency and consortia Virtuoso saw a 23% increase in bookings for fall 2024 compared to the year prior, Misty Belles, its vice president of global public relations, told BI.Forget asking <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/vacation-destinations-popular-ultra-wealthy-unexpected-countries-travel-agents-2024-10">where your friends "summer"</a> — now, it's all about where you autumn.<h2 id="020bc067-5732-485a-9efa-4786c00798c6">Fall vacations are becoming trendy</h2><div type="image" title="acadia national park fall leaves" height="3327" width="4436" msid="114474003" hostid="261" sizebytes="1526938"></div>Autumn travel often goes hand-in-hand with leaf-peeping excursions. (That's still true — AirDNA, which tracks vacation rental listings on platforms like Airbnb and Vrbo, told BI that demand in October for the popular fall foliage hot spots of rural New York and the coast of Maine is up 19.7% from 2023.)Many of these offseason vacationers are also seeking out classic overseas summer destinations like Europe.Travel-booking company Hopper told BI that in 2023, 23% of European vacations reserved on the platform were for September and October of that year, up 5% from 2019.Jackie Roth — a travel manager for Scott Dunn Private, the invite-only subsidiary of travel agency Scott Dunn — told BI that all its clients have been requesting fall travel. And likely not for some quick, dirt-cheap getaways — Scott Dunn Private's members must spend a minimum of $100,000 on travel annually.<div type="image" title="Paris" height="1414" width="1885" msid="114474007" hostid="261" sizebytes="614860"></div>The ultra-luxury team now fields more requests for vacations in September than in the traditional ultra-peak travel months of June, July, and August, often to European countries like Italy, France, and the United Kingdom, Roth said.Italy, in particular, reported a 15.5% increase in foreign visitors between September and November 2023 compared to the previous year."People are willing to trade going to the beach for their umbrella so they can experience some of the popular destinations without quite the crowds," Julie Durso, a Scott Dunn Private travel manager, told BI, adding that the team works with several Tuscany properties that are now trying to stay open through November.<h2 id="2c2fe6f1-1b61-4115-aa8e-0def0e4b0fe7">Why they're falling for fall</h2><div type="image" title="Colorful buildings in Sardinia" height="1414" width="1885" msid="114474005" hostid="261" sizebytes="588208"></div>Autumn can be a great time to travel if you're looking to avoid peak-season crowds and costs. Most children are back in school. And <a target="_blank" href="https://news.airbnb.com/2024-fall-trends-revealed/">Airbnb said</a> its vacation rentals are generally the cheapest from September through November.According to data from travel booking platform Kayak, the average nightly cost of three- and four-star hotels in Italy dropped 3% from the summer to fall of 2024. In Cagliari, Sardinia, the dip was closer to 22%.It's easier for families who aren't beholden to a school calendar to globetrot during the week. Or, they could just skip class.Kelly Grumbach, senior vice president of travel for concierge service Quintessentially, told BI that about 20% to 25% of the company's clients pull their children out of school for a weeklong shoulder-season vacation to avoid being "surrounded by American tourists" and "ripped off" by peak-season rates.<div type="image" title="Boats in the water at a port in Nice, France. "Our clients are being more selective about when to splurge on a special property and when to save." (The company has two membership options, the priciest at $2,850 a year.)Melissa Krueger, CEO of luxury travel wholesaler Classic Vacations, is especially partial to October, calling it the "best time to travel worldwide." In late September, 20% of Classic Vacations' bookings were for the final three months of the year, 7% for October specifically.<h2 id="b38b1d9a-1b49-4e94-a1ce-ba78aef6f31f">Italy's Amalfi Coast has seen a late-season boost</h2><div type="image" title="pool of Anantara Convento di Amalfi Grand Hotel" height="1366" width="2732" msid="114474014" hostid="261" sizebytes="723650"></div>According to Belles, of Virtuoso, some seasonal resorts have been extending their operating months to accommodate the growing number of late-season visitors.Estelle Vassallo, the general manager of Anantara Convento di Amalfi Grand Hotel, told BI that occupancy levels along the region have seen a "significant shift" in recent years, dipping in July and August while increasing in the traditional offseason months of May, June, September, and October.<div type="image" title="A view of Italy's Amalfi Coast cityscape on the coastline of the Mediterranean Sea." height="3200" width="4267" msid="114474010" hostid="261" sizebytes="1441388"></div>Her hotel has seen a "consistent" number of travelers throughout the year, which she expects will continue into November.Many hotels in the region close for winter breaks from <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.cntraveler.com/gallery/best-amalfi-coast-hotels">November to March</a>. Anantara Convento di Amalfi has instead opted to break from mid-January to mid-March.In 2024, the nightly hotel costs along this slice of coastal Italian paradise dipped as much as 23% from summer to fall, according to Kayak — except for Positano, where hotel costs have increased "slightly."<div type="image" title="Positano, Italy" height="1200" width="1600" msid="114474009" hostid="261" sizebytes="241030"></div>Before the rise of shoulder-season vacations, travelers wanted to chase the best weather, Grumbach said.Now, she's hearing more say: "I am fine with clouds and maybe a little rain. I just want to be able to eat at this restaurant and not have to get on a waitlist or go to this nice hotel but not have to pay double the amount.""We have some of the wealthiest clients in the world, and they're still like, 'I don't want to be ripped off," she added.

For some wealthy travelers, fall is the new summer

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Uday Padyana moved from India to the US in his 20s, landing a few tech jobs in Silicon Valley. </li><li>Despite better growth opportunities in India, Uday prefers the work culture in the US.</li></ul>This as-told-to essay is based on a conversation with Uday Padyana, a mid-30s manager at a Big Tech company in Silicon Valley. The following has been edited for length and clarity.When I first arrived in <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/reasons-i-left-silicon-valley-california-after-two-years-2023-12">Silicon Valley</a> in 2013 after relocating from India in my 20s, I wanted to move back.My parents and grandmother thought it was just homesickness, but I'd previously lived and worked outside of my hometown, so knew that this wasn't that feeling. It was because I knew that working in Big Tech in Silicon Valley would change me into a different person and I'd never move back.It's been 11 years since then, and I think I've gotten happier with my life here now that I've worked at a <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/landing-job-career-big-tech-interview-amazon-meta-google-apple-2024-5">few different jobs in Big Tech</a>. But I've also missed out on so many things back home — my family, friends, social circle, and sense of belonging.<h2 id="c75e447d-f472-426f-b4b8-19ef15acd002">Working in the US suits me more, although I'd have more opportunities in India</h2>I've interned and worked at a few other tech companies in the Valley, including <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/early-paypal-employee-sold-stock-too-soon-millionaire-2021-6">PayPal</a>, and I'm currently at a <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/quit-big-tech-dream-job-pay-perks-not-worth-it-2024-5">Big Tech company</a>. Prior to my current role, I also worked in Atlanta at a midsize tech firm, and outside the industry for over four years as a data analyst in Washington, DC.There are <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/millennial-working-in-bengaluru-the-silicon-valley-of-india-2023-7">more opportunities</a> in India. The <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/heres-why-investors-say-india-tech-startup-ecosystem-booms-2022-12">tech industry's growth rate</a> has been phenomenal there, especially for the top companies. If I worked the same job for the same company in India, my salary would probably be about 60% of what I make here, yet I'd probably be able to save almost twice the amount I save here.That's because the cost of living and taxes in Silicon Valley are higher than those in India. There's no public transportation here, so people either have to have a car or pay for Uber, which is expensive compared to India. High-quality organic food and eating out here is also more expensive, and hiring cleaning services is cheaper in India. I also have higher expenses here because of my annual trips back to see family in India.But despite this, working in the US suits me better than working in India because of my individualistic mindset. There's a <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/middle-managers-great-flattening-organization-meta-tech-layoffs-firing-2023-3">flatter hierarchy</a> in general, and I respond well to environments with accountability, ownership, and independence.I also like that there's more scope to explore restaurants with cuisines from across the world, meet people from different countries, and have access to <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/sf-hot-spots-where-founders-vc-tech-workers-hang-out-2024-7">top networking places</a>, conferences, and classes here in the US.<h2 id="dfe1658c-5024-4333-9878-9867140a9360">I had reverse culture shock when I first went home</h2>The first time I went back to India after three years of living in the US, I had a <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/reverse-culture-shock-moving-back-to-america-asia-singapore-2023-12">hard time adjusting</a>. It was <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/india-delhi-heat-wave-record-water-crisis-2024-5">too hot for me</a> and everything felt smaller, including my own room, where I'd lived for years. I was more sensitive to noise; it's quieter in the US, while India is bustling with sounds all the time, so I couldn't sleep. The air quality was also worse.Since I was upset, I threw tantrums like a teenager. By the end of the trip, though, I realized I was at fault since I was expecting people to change their ways and norms for me when I was only visiting for a few weeks.I decided to travel once a year to India, a promise I've been able to keep for the most part.Despite these regular visits, I realize I've changed. I expect more silence and personal space. The <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/india-heatwaves-could-soon-not-be-survivable-humans-world-bank-2022-12">summers have gotten even hotter</a> in India, and I've become accustomed to air conditioning and higher-quality wifi since we have them everywhere in the US. I've also forgotten some customs and have done them incorrectly.Because of my newly acquired mannerisms, preferences, habits, and life choices, it's easy for my old social circle to see me as "the guy who's living abroad." If I say a word in an American way out of habit, sometimes they think that I'm doing it deliberately to show off. Or if I say something authoritatively, it's assumed that I got that confidence from living in the US, not because that was always my personality.I also see that I might come across as snobbish now, so I have to consciously think through how I'm coming across before I say something. Some people back home think very competitively — they've hinted that they think I'm just plain lucky, and if they had the opportunity, they'd do it too and much better.<h2 id="72978b4b-ce83-4e5e-a4d6-9a4c6e3aeb5e">I missed out on relationships</h2>My definitions of comfort, friendship, and relationships have also changed.Texts on WhatsApp and calls back home aren't as effective as <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-to-deal-with-homesickness-loneliness-living-abroad-2023-11">being in person with family and friends</a>. WhatsApp calls can work for short chats but aren't as good for emotional conversations. It's difficult to assess their emotional and physical states, and there's also a higher risk of arguments due to misunderstandings.Sometimes, friends or family don't share things with me because they think certain things would be better to be said in person. I also don't share as much about my life with them as I would've naturally if I were around. I've missed many occasions where people meet and reconnect — family members' and friends' weddings, childbirths, and other important events of their lives.I also didn't evolve alongside my friends in India. I haven't followed their timelines and feel less peer pressure. Differences in mindsets between my old friends and I have crept up over time, from food and content preferences to outlook on life.I feel like I could've grown faster both materially and spiritually in the US because of the opportunities I had here, and that may not necessarily be at the same pace as the people I grew up with.<h2 id="8b127f72-db4a-46f9-a249-de4026d82a01">I wonder what my life would've been like if I stayed in India</h2>I'm generally happy with my job and my experience working in Big Tech here.While I have no regrets about my choice to move to the US for a tech job, part of me wonders what my life would be like now had I stayed back in India. Maybe I would've gone after dreams I aspired to as a teenager, like becoming an <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/quit-tech-job-launch-startup-now-make-400000-2024-4">entrepreneur in tech</a> or entertainment.But perhaps this is a bit of wishful thinking. As a colleague here put it, "Who knows, maybe you'd have just been a failure there — so many try and fail and only a few succeed." I don't have any way of knowing what could've been.Living somewhere new changes you internally and makes you a different person. I feel too foreign here and too foreign there. Even if I had all the resources to go back to India, it'd be different — I've grown apart from who I was. And as much as I really like the US, I'm not from here. I don't have the same upbringing as many people here, so there are subtle differences in the jokes, music, pop culture references, and even habits.One thing I'd like to do is to actualize all of my gifts and feel fully utilized, whether from a creative standpoint or a tech and business standpoint. I feel I haven't done that much and mostly have been flailing to make ends meet and get myself into a <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/personal-finance/investing/financial-plan">"safer" situation</a> by having a job, insurance, and savings.But with the recession, there's nothing safe, and I see that I could've just taken risks in the first place — on my startup idea, trying to break into the movie industry, or even taking a break to write a novel I've wanted to write — and I can do so even now.When I first moved to the US, I explored different frameworks for long-term thinking, such as <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/what-you-can-learn-from-jeff-bezos-leadership-style">Jeff Bezos's</a> famous approach of <a target="_blank" href="https://www.goodreads.com/quotes/896830-i-wanted-to-project-myself-forward-to-age-80-and">looking at your life from the point of view of yourself at 80</a>. Eric Adams says his lavish, Turkey-funded travels were legal 'gifts,' not bribes

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Thousands of <keyword id="19953645" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="Chinese-migrants" source="keywords">Chinese migrants</keyword> flew into Ecuador last year in hopes of walking into the US.</li><li>But Ecuador is now cutting its yearslong <keyword id="22159339" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="visa-free-access" source="keywords">visa-free access</keyword> to Chinese citizens after a surge in <keyword id="19929766" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="migrants" source="keywords">migrants</keyword>.</li></ul>Ecuador is suspending visa-free access for Chinese travelers starting July 1, closing off a popular arrival spot used last year by thousands of Chinese migrants trekking to the <keyword id="19953646" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="US-Mexico-border" source="keywords">US-Mexico border</keyword>. Since 2016, Ecuador has allowed Chinese nationals to enter its borders without a visa and stay for up to 90 days. But in a statement on Tuesday seen by Business Insider, the <keyword id="20245662" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="ministry-of-foreign-affairs" source="keywords">Ministry of Foreign Affairs</keyword> and Human Mobility said it was ending the program "due to the unusual increase in irregular migratory flows of Chinese citizens" who overstayed their 90 days. It is only one of two nations in the Americas that offers visa-free access to Chinese nationals. The other is Suriname, a smaller country of about 618,000 people. The Ecuadorian ministry noted that about 50% of all Chinese arrivals "have not left through regular routes and within the times established by law." Many people have used the country as a "starting point to reach other destinations in the Hemisphere," the ministry added. <a target="_blank" href="https://www.niskanencenter.org/new-data-suggests-political-repression-slowing-economy-driving-irregular-chinese-migration-to-u-s/">The Niskanen Center</a> assessed in May that Chinese travelers entered Ecuador 48,381 times in 2023 but only left the country legally 24,240 times that year. The deficit was "by far the highest number of any nationality," the US think tank wrote. It comes amid a surge in Chinese arrivals that year, with a 235% increase compared to the previous five-year average, per the Niskanen Center. The visa-free access recently made Ecuador a major entry point into the Americas for <a target="_blank" href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ukkLIFQWG4g&amp;t=1735s&amp;ab_channel=CNAInsider">Chinese migrants looking to travel through Central America and reach the US-Mexico border.</a> In response to Ecuador's Tuesday decision, a <a target="_blank" href="https://www.fmprc.gov.cn/fyrbt_673021/jzhsl_673025/202406/t20240618_11437859.shtml">Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson</a> said the country "firmly opposes any form of <keyword id="22159340" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="smuggling-activities" source="keywords">smuggling activities</keyword>." "In recent years, Chinese law enforcement agencies have cracked down on crimes that hinder national border management and have maintained a high-pressure crackdown on various smuggling organizations and criminals engaged in smuggling activities, achieving remarkable results," the spokesperson said. <h2>How Chinese migrants use Ecuador to get to the US</h2>Thousands of migrants fly into Ecuador before traveling through Colombia, where they begin a grueling trek on <a href="https://edition.cnn.com/2023/04/15/americas/darien-gap-migrants-colombia-panama-whole-story-cmd-intl/index.html" target="_blank">a perilous, cartel-run route</a> through a stretch of jungle called the <keyword id="22159341" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Darin-Gap" source="keywords">Darién Gap</keyword>. If successful, they emerge in Panama. Over 15,500 Chinese migrants were counted exiting the Darién Gap in 2023, per <a target="_blank" href="https://www.wilsoncenter.org/article/through-darien-gap-new-path-chinese-asylum-seekers-united-states">Washington-based think tank The Wilson Center.</a> "This figure is nearly eight times as many from the same period in 2022 and more than 40 times that of 2021," wrote Joshua Peng, a program associate in refugee and displacement research at The Wilson Center. Many migrants then travel to Mexico, attempting to reach the US through its southern border. <keyword id="19959298" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="US-border" source="keywords">US border</keyword> officials said they <a target="_blank" href="https://apnews.com/article/china-immigration-border-deportation-mayorkas-514f42ee56e80fe7eb7f9fcc71c4d55c">detained 37,000 Chinese migrants attempting to cross the border in 2023</a>, or 10 times the number detained in the year before. The true number of those attempting to cross the border is likely higher. <div type="image" title="Chinese migrants huddle in a line to receive colored wristbands from a US Border Patrol agent at a makeshift camp." height="2667" width="4000" msid="111136208" hostid="261"></div>The flow of Chinese migrants continued to surge in 2024, with <a target="_blank" href="https://www.cbsnews.com/news/us-border-mexico-chinese-migrants-60-minutes/">CBS reporting</a> in February that it observed <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/chinese-migrants-guide-douyin-how-to-cross-us-border-cbs-2024-2">600 migrants, many of whom were Chinese, entering the US in a single day.</a> The House Homeland Security Subcommittee on Oversight, Investigations, and Accountability <a target="_blank" href="https://homeland.house.gov/2024/05/11/media-advisory-homeland-subcommittee-hearing-on-unprecedented-surge-of-chinese-illegal-immigration/">said in May</a> that the number of Chinese nationals encountered by authorities at the US border in March had jumped 8,000% from the same period in 2021. <keyword id="19959299" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="illegal-immigration" source="keywords">Illegal immigration</keyword> from the southern border has been <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/republicans-want-to-kill-bipartisan-border-bill-help-trump-campaign-2024-1">rising in political prominence</a> in the US, with Republican leaders <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/texas-spent-nearly-9-million-busing-migrants-over-holidays-2023-1">pushing for increased border security</a> and saying southern states are unable to cope with a surge in migrants. Data on Chinese arrivals in Ecuador give some clues to the demographics of migrants reaching the US. The government has raised the TCS on foreign remittances under the Liberalised Remittance Scheme (LRS) from 5 per cent to 20 per cent. This will be applicable to international travel, sending money abroad and other remittances. <keyword id="642357" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="travel-agents-association-of-india" source="Orion">Travel Agents Association of India</keyword> (TAAI) has written to <keyword id="25455" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="finance" source="Orion">Finance</keyword> Minister <keyword id="129243" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="nirmala-sitharaman" source="Orion">Nirmala Sitharaman</keyword>, appealing to abolish TCS on overseas tour packages, highlighting the business loss and complexity of its implementation. In a letter to the FM, TAAI President Jyoti Mayal said the TCS is a huge challenge for the travel fraternity and would lead to a lot of business being diverted to overseas tour operators. Further, she pointed out that with GST already affecting the livelihood of Indian tour operators engaged in outbound tours, the introduction of TCS presents a double blow. According to her, Indian tour companies are becoming less competitive when compared to operators outside India, who not only save on the 5 per cent GST but also the TCS, which ranges from 5 to 20 per cent, and they are not required to register in India. The association in its letter also stated that the <keyword id="6354335" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="reserve-bank-of-india" source="Orion">Reserve Bank of India</keyword> and banks are not equipped to maintain and monitor the limits of Rs 7 lakh per traveller, and there is no mechanism to track the same. There is still ambiguity on the payments made for such packages through credit cards overseas, it said. The risks associated with these overseas companies could also have a significant impact on passengers in general. The quality and reliability of these companies may not meet the desired standards, leading to potential service delivery issues or even instances of fraud, Mayal emphasised. She lastly urged the finance minister to abolish the TCS as a whole on overseas tour packages or at least defer it until the next financial year so that a detailed discussion can be carried on the subject. When I travel, I do my best to make time for yoga and seek out local studios that teach in their native tongue versus English-speaking ones.By attending yoga classes in languages I don't understand, I've learned much about myself, my practice, and my teaching style because I get outside my comfort zone.<h2>As a teacher, I've learned the value of nonverbal cues</h2>When I don't understand the words coming out of the teacher's mouth, I look at their hands.People who speak all <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/ways-learn-foreign-language-as-adult-2019-1">different languages</a> use hand gestures and naturally incorporate them into their yoga teaching. As a teacher, I've learned from these experiences that simple hand gestures can hold as much power (if not more) than a demo of a pose.Whether a teacher is highlighting a body part, indicating to rise, or mimicking how to twist and turn, their hands speak a language of their own, and it's something I've tried to incorporate into my teachings.There's also value in voice intonation, emphasis, and volume. You can make an educated guess on what the teacher is guiding you to do by focusing on how something is said. While I assume the teacher is offering guidance on how to position or go deeper into a pose, I turn inward to see how I need to adjust to feel more grounded in the position.Doing so has helped me tune into what feels good, rather than just follow instructions. That increases my self-awareness. Though I can glean some of the instructions by watching the teacher or listening to their tone, at times I can't get all the directions this way, so I take the opportunity to see what path my body wants to take me, and that has felt incredibly liberating and clarifying.This lesson has also helped me determine my limits in yoga. In other words, it takes my ego out of the equation when I don't know the language. I can figure out whether I want to be softer on myself when my body is tight. If it is, I will avoid going deeper into a pose and stay still more often. Sanskrit is the original language of yoga and the root of many Indian languages. Whether you take yoga in Spain or Belgium, hearing a Sanskrit word or phrase (such as "adho mukha svanasana," aka downward-facing dog) sparks a note of recognition of yoga's origin.Taking a yoga class in a language you're not fluent in can be an equalizer; in doing so, you become somewhat of a beginner again, even if you're a teacher, because you have to approach the practice differently and learn a new set of awareness tools.Going to a yoga class in another language also gives you a taste of the local community. I love hearing new languages, exploring different studios, seeing how differently students interact.
